Galactica Star, a 65-metre Heesen is the world’s first aluminium yacht with a fast displacement hull. As a result, she has achieved what was considered impossible if you think along conventional lines. The yacht was designed to achieve opposite objectives. To go faster but use less fuel and to go further but also faster. It is not a riddle, it is not evolution, it is quite simply the result of over 50 million computer calculations and exhaustive testing that had such extraordinary results that the model was retested to confirm the facts. In a world where a 5 percent gain is considered a triumph, this hull is 30 percent more efficient than any other yet tested.

First impressions

Leave aside the technical and enjoy the lifestyle. Deck space is staggering with over 267 square metres on her three upper decks. The foredeck is both a helipad and sun terrace set over gull wing doors that open to reveal a full-beam tender garage large enough for the 7.5 metre Art of Kinetik speedboat.

Galactica Star has been laid out to enable guests to dine on any deck at any time of the day. With a choice of ten locations the crew can transform each place to suit the mood of the moment.

Guest Accommodation

Galaxy is great for families thanks to her child-friendly setup. Built in 2005, She offers guest accommodation for up to 12 guests with a layout comprising a master suite, one VIP cabin, three double cabins and one twin cabin. There are 15 beds in total, including 2 pullmans. She is also capable of carrying up to 15 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht charter experience.

Built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she offers greater on-board space and is more stable when at anchor thanks to her full-displacement hull. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 13 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 16 knots with a range of up to 5,000 nautical miles from her 130,000 litre fuel tanks at 12 knots. An advanced stabilisation system on board reduces the side-to-side roll of the yacht and promises guests exceptional comfort levels at anchor or when underway.

Onboard Galaxy has a large selection of toys and accessories to keep you and your guests entertained on the water throughout your stay. Principle among these is a Flyboard which is a must for any self-respecting thrill-seeker, prepare for supersize thrills - even beginners will enjoy the thrill of swooping skywards and ‘dolphining’ back into the water. Take to the sea on the Jet Skis offering you power and control on the water. Another excellent feature are four waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. On the USS Enterprise -D , the name of the captain 's yacht was the Calypso .

On the USS Enterprise -E , the name of the captain's yacht was the Cousteau . In 2375 , the crew of the USS Enterprise -E used the Cousteau to travel to the surface of the Ba'ku planet . ( TNG : " New Ground ", okudagram ; Star Trek: Insurrection )

The California -class USS Cerritos also carried a captain's yacht . ( LD : " Terminal Provocations ", " No Small Parts ", " First First Contact ")

Background information [ ]

Designer Andrew Probert came up with the concept of the captain's yacht while designing the USS Enterprise -D . Although it was never seen in use, it was labeled on the master systems display screen in main engineering and on Commander William T. Riker 's bridge console ("New Ground"), docked at the bottom of the saucer section almost directly opposite the main bridge . Probert suggested possible ways for the yacht to be used during the first season , including not showing the yacht but mentioning it in dialogue, but his ideas were rejected. The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual (p. 164) claims that the producers almost used the yacht in TNG : " Samaritan Snare ", but decided to use an " executive shuttlecraft " due to budgetary constraints. According to Patrick Stewart , the yacht would have been called Calypso . ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual , p. 164) This name for the yacht was mentioned in the notes to the captain's yacht entry of the Star Trek Encyclopedia , 3rd ed., p. 83. With the latest edition of the Star Trek Encyclopedia , 4th ed., vol. 1, p. 117, the name has been changed to Cousteau .

A captain's yacht is visible on the underside of several Nebula -class starships, such as the USS Phoenix and USS Prometheus as well.

Rick Sternbach designed similar craft into the USS Voyager and the USS Equinox , known as the aeroshuttle and the waverider , respectively. Like on the Enterprise -D, however, these vessels were only depicted on technical schematics and never seen in operation or referred to in dialogue.

Ronald B. Moore notes in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual that naval tradition would insist on calling such a craft the Captain's gig rather than the Captain's yacht.

In promotional art depicting the schematics of the Odyssey -class USS Enterprise -F , as revealed by Dave Blass on twitter, the location of this ship's captain's yacht was labeled. [1]

Constitution -class built-in auxiliary vehicle

In the 1969 UK Comic strip series , the dome at the bottom of the saucer section of the Constitution -class USS Enterprise is also seen detaching as a similar auxiliary vehicle.

The Captain's yacht is an obtainable ship in Star Trek Online . It is one of the game's many bonuses for subscribers and Lifetime subscribers, obtainable once a player reaches 400 days subscribed or automatically once the Lifetime subscription is activated. It resembles the Cousteau .

On board 56m Benetti Galaxy with owner Dave Hagewood

This first-time yacht owner built his career in gaming before setting his sights on something out of this world. He tells Rachel Ingram how he has built his perfect universe on board 56-metre Galaxy .

“I always wanted a spaceship,” says Dave Hagewood, owner of Galaxy , a recently refitted 56-metre Benetti superyacht. “My dad was in the space programme – he worked on the Saturn V rocket – and I always dreamed of experiencing the freedom of space travel. The more time I spent on boats, the more I felt like this was closest thing to having that feeling on Earth.”

For first-time owner Hagewood, a lifelong pursuit of freedom has been the key driver behind many of his decisions. “When I was younger, I manifested a future where I could have the freedom to do what I wanted and go where I wanted, but I also knew that I needed to be very successful and have the funding to be able to live that lifestyle,” he says.

Hagewood, who grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, dedicated the first half of his life to business and carved out a successful career in the video game industry. “I dropped out of college because I was excited about the internet,” he says. “I was passionate about gaming and I funded myself to learn the ropes of game design and development. This was the beginning of me building my philosophy of creating the kind of life you want for yourself.”

In 2001, he founded video game developer Psyonix, based in San Diego. “We built a culture around enjoying yourself at work, because if we we’re not enjoying ourselves, how can we make a product that makes people enjoy themselves?”  he says. “That ended up being one of the most successful parts of my approach. Very few people ever left the company because it was such a great place to work and people were invested.”

In 2015, the company had its big break with Rocket League, a football game in which players drive jet-powered cars. Gamers took to it immediately. It enjoyed great success initially on Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4 and was later released for Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, among other consoles.

With Rocket League securing his legacy in the gaming world, Hagewood felt like he “wanted a change” and in 2019, he sold Psyonix, which was acquired by Epic Games. “When I sold the company, the first thing I started thinking about was this dream of being on the ocean,” he says.

It was at this time that he met his partner, Danielle, a Fort Lauderdale native who grew up on the sea, sailing on her family’s boats and going tubing or snorkelling with her friends after school. Hagewood was inspired by Danielle’s sense of freedom and passion for travel and the pair  began exploring the globe by boat, starting with a catamaran trip in Puerto Rico. “That time was like a rebirth,” he reflects. “Danielle was part of it, travel was part of it, selling the company was part of it – everything happened at once like a Big Bang.”

During the pandemic, the pair spent three months chartering two yachts – 27-metre Maxi Beer and 28-metre Yvonne – across Europe and found themselves some of the only Americans on the continent. “During this time, we determined that we loved yachting and we wanted to  make it a lifestyle,” Hagewood says.

Back on dry land, they started shopping and found Galaxy , a 56-metre Benetti that had been delivered in 2005 and proved to be a popular charter yacht. “It was older than some of the others we were looking at, but it was so well-maintained that it looked more immaculate than some of the newer boats,” Hagewood says. “We also liked the idea of going a little bit lower than our budget and then having a base from which we could really create something very uniquely ‘us’. We had some pretty radical ideas about what we want a boat to look and feel like, as opposed to what the average yacht owner wants, so it was the perfect scenario for us to build our own dream.”

The vision for the yacht is inspired by the lifestyle of Hagewood and his partner. When they’re not sailing, the owners spend a lot of time at music festivals and they’re regulars at Burning Man (an annual gathering that takes place in  Nevada’s Black Rock Desert). The festival encourages free expression and individuality, and this can be felt throughout the yacht, from the ambience to the design.

“Many yacht owners want privacy but we’re much more open. Our lifestyle is heavy on socialising, so we wanted the yacht to be a platform for our friends to come together and have fun,” Hagewood says. “Boats are amazing things to build a community around – these floating platforms are literally built to entertain.”

For the refit, Hagewood worked with London-based design firm Njord by Bergman Design House , founded by Marie Soliman, Albin Berglund and Sarah Colbon. “I wanted it to be my spaceship, hence the name Galaxy , and design wise, I wanted to steer everything back to that theme,” Hagewood says. “The designers have been amazing at understanding what we’re going for. When we said we wanted it to feel like a galaxy, they had so many ideas of things I hadn’t even thought of. They just nailed it.”

The yacht combines the ethereal magic of outer space with the mystery and creativity of Burning Man and the practicalities of a “floating venue”. The main deck has been transformed into a giant nightclub-style lounge with high-tech DJ equipment and bespoke decor and colourful artwork, including paintings by Camille Hannah and wall coverings by digital artist Dylan Cole, known for Disney’s Avatar and Maleficent .  A closer look will reveal magical creatures and ET aliens hidden in the mystical scenes Cole has created. Taking centre stage  in the lounge is The Thinker ,  an astronaut piece by contemporary artist Joseph Klibansky, inspired by Rodin’s classic sculpture.

The upper deck takes on a different aesthetic and is designed for relaxation, with a lounge and dining space for 12 people. The yacht also features guest suites, named and styled after other planets, and a highly bespoke master suite. The bed’s headboard is transformed into a star-gazing platform highlighting the star signs of the owners and their friends, while the ceiling showcases the owners’ favourite constellation.

Conscious of Hagewood’s eagerness to sail into the next chapter of his life, Njord by Bergman Design House carried out the project in just five months. The refit was completed at Monaco Marine’s La Ciotat yard in France.

Unlike most superyachts, Galaxy will be Hagewood’s primary residence. “When you charter a yacht, you try to squeeze every moment out of every day. We’re taking a more relaxed approach and trying to make it more of a day-to-day reality,” Hagewood says. “With the size and stability of a boat, it feels better than a home. And when you’ve got a whole crew taking care of your every need, it’s so comforting. It’s also more convenient because we like to travel so much – when we are at home, we’re always packing and unpacking, so the travelling lifestyle is actually easier on a boat.”

Naturally, Hagewood still has his sights set on space. “Every day I look at opportunities to get involved in or invest in,” he says. “It’d be amazing to help space travel become a tourism industry – not just for astronauts and people who have  $20 million to spare. I’d love to go into orbit, experience zero gravity and visit a space station.”

In the meantime, he’s quite content in his own bespoke universe on board Galaxy . “I like that Galaxy is a self-contained world, filled with a group of people working to make that world the most comfortable, perfect place for us at all times. It’s really the pinnacle of living. And the fact that I wake up every morning in a different place – that’s the most beautiful thing ever.”

What has an aluminum-plate backbone, more than one head, and runs faster than Usain Bolt? Heesen ’s superyacht Galactica— or “Project Cosmos,” as it was formerly called by the yard. The largest boat built by the Dutch shipyard to date is getting ready for its spring debutante ball. Fast, sporty and 262 feet long, the owner refers to Galactica as his “ultimate superyacht.”

Hundreds of yachts around the world are larger than Galactica . None of them are built entirely out of aluminum. For the owner who likes to make a statement with his custom new builds, Galactica had to be his largest and fastest one yet. The owner decided he wanted a 30-knot top speed—greased lightning for a yacht this size and a conundrum for the shipyard.

A 262-ft. steel-hulled boat with conventional propulsion wouldn’t be able to reach that 30-knot mark. But an all-aluminum boat might, though that metal doesn’t provide the type of structural support that heavier steel does. Such a yacht had never been built, even by an aluminum specialist like Heesen. It would take serious creative engineering.

The owner has history when it comes to these types of requests. His previous two yachts, Galactica Star and Galactica Super Nova are both all-aluminum with top speeds nearing 30 knots. At 230 feet in length, the latter was Heesen’s largest-ever build when delivered in 2016. Galactica is 30 feet longer, and while that doesn’t sound like much in the scheme of things, the technical ingenuity required to make it work had Heesen’s top engineers scratching their heads. The answer lay outside the boating industry, in the construction industry’s I-beam.

“Everyone knows the I-beam where you have the material on the outer veins of your structure,” Peter van der Zanden, Heesen’s general manager of design, development and engineering, told Robb Report . “That’s where our inspiration for the backbone came from, where we have the majority of materials in the bottom of the boat and on the main deck—our ‘outer veins’.”

The name “backbone” suggests a spine or something with flex, but the patented box-shaped structure is anything but. Composed of 15-mm aluminum plate, it’s lightweight and strong, running almost the full length of the yacht.

“We knew the design would work, our only concern was if it would work well enough,” says Van der Zanden.

Heesen created a scale model of the boat in water, divided into four segments, and simulated the pressures and forces at sea. When the results exceeded the requirements set out by Lloyd’s, the yard patented the design.

Of course, there’s more to Galactica than its hidden backbone. Key defining features of the Winch Design exterior include large sweeping panes of glass that trace the arching line of the superstructure. A bow helipad doubles as a cinema with seating and a screen that folds away into the deck. The glass-bottomed pool on the main deck reflects sun rays on the beach club below. Increasing the amount of light—both natural and artificial—throughout the boat was a chief request in this latest version of Galactica.

“The owner’s previous experience has certainly influenced the way Galactica looks,” James Russell, exterior designer at Winch, told Robb Report . “It takes time to learn what you love, and particular focus has been paid to areas where more time will be spent, such as the beach club.”

Inside, an interior by Sinot Yacht Design & Architecture includes a central glass elevator, brushed oak and marble finishes, and in the main deck lounge, hand-cut glass ceilings. Galactica ’s windows incline at 45 degrees, rather than the standard 90 degrees, to give the illusion that the panes of glass are larger than they are.

Glass is a recurring theme, from the glass detailing in the straw marquetry and stainless-steel wall located in the main deck lounge, to the drinks display cabinet on the bridge deck with bespoke-sized backlit glass cubes sized to fit individual bottles. But glass is heavy. For the yacht to be fast, it needs to be light.

On a yacht of Galactica ’s size, everything is large, from the four MTU V20 engines (12 tons each) and the two gearboxes (13 tons each), to the air-intakes and the fuel tanks. But everything was made as lightweight as possible. The boat totals only 1,700 gross tons. The owner’s 30 knots will come from the MTUs’ 19,320 horsepower as well as the variable-pitch propellers.

Nothing has come easy with this yacht build. Its January journey from Heesen’s shipyard in Oss to the port of Harlingen where the boat is undergoing final testing in the North Sea was a game of inches. It passed through villages and squeezed beneath canal bridges with less than half a foot to spare, a hair-raising exercise for an undelivered superyacht. It will be turned over to its owner in April.

Fast Displacement

Heesen’s 65m Fast displacement all-aluminium motor yacht GALACTICA STAR successfully completed sea trails in the North Sea with an air temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, wind force oscillating from 4 to 5 Beaufort and waves over a meter high.

The GALACTICA STAR reached speeds of 28.8 knots, 2+ knots over the contractual speed. The vessel performed well, moved smoothly through the water and was reported to be very manoeuvrable.

The guests’ comfort onboard is further insured by 5 Sea Keeper gyro stabilizers.

Geometric coffee tables face the staid couches, and all forms work together as one considered entity. Two pop-up 50-inch plasma TVs, which are of course linked to DVD and satellite, further the modern and functional style. The formal dining room seats up to as many as many as 14 guests (pictured below), at her generous European plain tree dining table. Her panoramic windows positioned on each side of this full-beam width salon provide natural lighting and vista.

On June 22, 2024 , 2024 LJ will make its closest approach to Earth at a distance of approximately 2.1 million miles (3.4 million kilometers). For comparison, the average distance from Earth to the Moon is about 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers), making 2024 LJ’s flyby nearly nine times that distance.

Scientists baffled as supermassive black hole finally 'awakening' for first time

R esearchers have been left baffled after observing a dramatic brightening at the heart of another galaxy apparently caused by a supermassive black hole awakening.

The events were tracked at the core of a galaxy located roughly 360 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo.

Researchers said it appears that a spinning disk of diffuse material has formed around the supermassive black hole, with some of the matter being consumed.

In other words, the black hole has been awakening from dormancy and beginning to gorge itself with nearby material.

When asked what caused the phenomenon, astrophysicist at European Southern Observatory in Germany Paula Sanchez Saez said: "At the moment, we do not know."

Lorena Hernandez Garcia of the University of Valparaiso in Chile said: "It could be a natural process of the galaxy.

"We know that a galaxy passes through different phases of activity and non-activity during its lifetime. Something might happen to make a galaxy activate, like, for example, a star that is falling to the black hole."

According to the researchers, if the observations represent something other than the onset of an active galactic nucleus, it would have to be an astrophysical phenomenon never before seen by researchers.

Black holes are extraordinarily dense objects with gravity so strong that not even light can escape.

They range in size from a mass equivalent to a single star to the behemoths existing at the core of many galaxies, millions and even billions of times more massive.

Supermassive black holes sometimes shoot vast jets of high-energy particles into space, but no such jet has been detected in this instance.

A closer supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, or Sgr A*, is located about 26,000 light-years from Earth.

Hernandez said: "The same process could eventually happen to Sgr A*, which is actually dormant.

"But for now we are not in risk, and probably if it activates we would not notice because we are very far from the centre."
