The Alberg 35 dates back to the dawn of big-time fiberglass sailboat building. Its production began in 1961, just a year after Hinckley stopped building production wooden sailboats. Two years earlier, in 1959, Pearson built the first Triton, the boat that was the prototype of the inexpensive, small family, fiberglass cruising sailboat. The Tritons big selling point was a low-maintenance hull that Mom and Pop and the kids didnt have to spend all spring in the boatyard, getting it ready for the summer.

These days-when getting the family sailboat ready in the spring may mean little more than washing and waxing the topsides, plus a quick coat of paint on the bottom-its hard to remember that owning a boat some 30 years ago usually meant work, and a lot of it, or money, and a lot of that, too.

In 1961, Pearson added the 34-foot, 9-inch Alberg 35 to its expanding sailboat line. The Alberg 35 was a fixture in the Pearson line until 1967. In 1968, the boat was replaced by the Shaw-designed Pearson 35, a slightly larger, more modern boat in keeping with the changing demands of the market. During six years of production, more than 250 Alberg 35s were built.

Its very tempting to call every good-looking, successful boat from the 1960s a classic. And the Alberg 35 is no exception. It is good-looking and was successful, so we think it deserves to be called a classic. The boat has a handsome sheer, flattish for her day but old-fashioned and springy compared to current boats. She has a low, rounded cabin trunk with slightly raised doghouse, and just about perfectly balanced long overhangs both forward and aft.

Compared to more modern 35-footers, the Alberg 35 is narrow, short on the waterline, and cramped. Todays typical 35-foot cruiser-racer is at least four feet longer at the waterline and more than a foot wider.

Sailing Performance

The term cruiser-racer was just entering the jargon in 1961. The Pearson sales brochure from 1967 calls the Alberg 35 a proven ocean racer, cruiser. Note the term ocean. The Alberg 35 was the smallest boat in the Pearson line to which that word was attached, unlike many builders who push anything with lifelines and a self-bailing cockpit as a bluewater cruiser.

While the Alberg 35 had moderate success as a racer, the boat was-and still is-a cruising boat. By current standards, the Alberg 35 is a slow boat for her length overall, with a typical U.S. Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) rating of 198. By way of comparison, her replacement, the Pearson 35, rates about 174, and the Ericson 35-2 about 150.

But Alberg 35s take to sea pretty well. The narrow, deep hull form makes for a very good range of positive stability-about 135 degrees-and an easy motion in a seaway. Owners consider the boats speed on par with other boats of similar size and type.

Unlike modern boats with wide beam and firm bilges, the narrow Alberg 35 heels very quickly, despite a 42-percent ballast-to-displacement ratio. But narrow boats sail fairly efficiently at fairly steep heeling angles. A modern boat such as the J/35 sails best upwind in 15 knots of true breeze at a 23-degree angle of heel, while a boat like the Alberg 35 is happy at close to a 30-degree angle in the same conditions. (Bottom line: The cook will insist that you crack off while supper is on the stove.)

With a rudder set well forward, it can take a lot of helm to keep the boat on course when reaching in a breeze. The relatively large, low-aspect ratio mainsail doesn’t help. At the same time, owners report that the boat tracks well, a quality missing in many newer boats.

The Alberg 35 was built both as a sloop and a yawl. Yawls were popular under the Cruising Club of America (CCA) Rule because mizzen and mizzen staysail area was lightly taxed. The yawl is not a bad rig for short-handed cruising, since the mizzen can be used to help balance the boat, and it is particularly useful in anchoring and weighing anchor under sail. From a performance and handling point of view, however, the yawl rig has few if any advantages on a boat this size. We would look for the sloop rig if we were shopping for an Alberg 35.

The mast is stepped on deck, over the doorway to the forward cabin. This requires substantial reinforcement of the bulkhead. Several owners in our survey reported that the coring in the deck under the mast has crushed, allowing the top of the cabin to compress. The problem can be fixed by replacing the core with solid laminate, and re-locating the compression post more directly under the mast. Other owners have also laminated in cross beams beneath the deck to reinforce this area.

Both the sloop and yawl rigs have simple, fairly heavy aluminum masts. A varnished spruce roller-reefing main boom was standard. Wed forget the roller reefing and set the boat up for slab reefing. In our experience, a roller-reefed mainsail is usually so baggy that its useless for upwind sailing.

Several owners in our survey have added bowsprits to their A35s, converting them to cutter rigs with a yankee and staysail. This improves the boats balance, as well as making sail combinations more flexible for cruising.

The cockpit is long and quite large, with plenty of room for daysailing hordes. Cockpit coamings are teak, and really look nice when varnished. The standard tiller takes up a lot of cockpit space, but most boats weve looked at have the optional pedestal wheel steering.

Big port and starboard cockpit lockers have poor locking arrangements, and drain straight to the bilge. Give a lot of thought to what will happen if the boat is pooped by a following sea, then go to work at improving hatch sealing and fastening.

Sail-handling equipment on these boats is likely to be primitive. The old Merriman No. 5 genoa winches and No. 2 mainsheet and jib halyard winches date from the time when trimming and setting sails was expected to be a lot of work. Wed replace them all with modern, powerful, self-tailing winches if anything other than daysailing is contemplated.

Likewise, there was originally no mainsheet traveler. On a narrow boat like this, with the mainsheet led aft, there really isn’t that much advantage to a traveler; it simply operates over too small a range of the booms arc to offer much benefit. If the mainsheet were re-led so that you could put a traveler on the bridgedeck, just in front of the steering pedestal, a traveler would be worthwhile. This, of course, would mean getting rid of the roller-reefing main, but in our opinion, thats a good idea anyway.

Wheel steering was an option, but youll find it on a lot of Alberg 35s-a plus, in our opinion.

Construction Details

Today, many A35s are used for offshore cruising. Plain, rugged construction is one reason why. The hull is a heavy, uncored layup, not particularly stiff or strong for its weight, but easy to repair and relatively foolproof.

Rudder construction is a holdover from the days of wooden boats. It consists of a wooden rudder blade bolted to a heavy bronze rod, formed to the shape of the aft edge of the prop aperture. The rudder of any Alberg 35 should be examined carefully, not because this type of construction is poor, but simply because the rudders are getting old. The rudders may have been damaged in groundings, or the stock bolts may be corroded.

One advantage of rudder construction is that it is very easy to change the rudder design. We suggest getting rid of the original barn-door rudder blade and replacing it with a more modern design with a straight trailing edge and more area near the bottom of the rudder.

This Constellation-type profile became pretty much standard with the last long-keel CCA boats designed before the Intrepid-type skeg and rudder of the late 1960s. The bottom of the new rudder could be angled up slightly to reduce the chance of damage in groundings.

Two aspects of the boats construction have caused some problems for owners. First, the ballast casting is a single chunk of lead which is dropped into the hollow fiberglass keel molding.

Along the bottom of the keel, some boats have a void between the lead casting and the fiberglass shell, making the shell vulnerable to damage in groundings or even when hauling and launching the boat. A surveyor should carefully evaluate this area for voids by sounding with a mallet. Voids can be fairly easily filled by injecting epoxy resin into the cavity.

The other problem could be more difficult to solve. The decks on early fiberglass boats like the A35 were frequently built using edge-grain rather than endgrain balsa wood. Edge-grain lacks the stiffness or compression strength of a modern end-grain balsa sandwich. Flexing of decks cored this way can break the bond between the fiberglass skins and balsa core. If the deck feels mushy, it likely is at least partially delaminated.

Repair-assuming the core is dry-involves drilling an extensive network of holes through the deck skin and core, being careful to reach but not penetrate the inner skin. Epoxy resin is then injected in each hole until it runs out of adjacent holes. The deck should be braced upward from below and weighted down from above until the resin cures.

This method works well with small areas of delamination, but is a tedious job in larger areas. At best, you end up with a deck sandwich that is somewhat stronger than the original that failed. Major refinishing of the deck will then be required. Extensive deck softness is cause for rejecting any boat, regardless of age.

You will find a variety of tankage arrangements in boats of different vintages. According to one owner, early boats have galvanized fuel and water tanks, which will eventually rust through. Another owner had a huge built-in fiberglass fuel tank forward, which developed a leak and was replaced by a monel tank in the same location. Design specifications for late boats in the production run call for an integral, 48-gallon, fiberglass water tank located in the bilge under the main cabin sole, plus a 23-gallon monel fuel tank under the cockpit sole.

The advantage of the monel fuel tank is that it will not have to be replaced if a diesel engine is installed: Simply flush it thoroughly with diesel fuel to remove any traces of gasoline, and youre in business. Monel is absolutely the best material for either fuel or water tanks, but it is prohibitively expensive for most.

Like most sailboats of this vintage, you may find extensive gelcoat crazing and fading on both the hull and deck. This is a cosmetic problem up to the point where crazing allows water to migrate into the laminate, at which time it can become a structural problem. If the gelcoat has begun to buckle and peel, its best to avoid the boat unless youre looking for a boat at a rock-bottom price for offshore sailing. Cosmetic repair of superficial crazing is labor-intensive, involving sanding, multiple coats of high-build epoxy primer, and complete refinishing, preferably with polyurethane. To have this done professionally would be quite expensive.

The deck gear, standing rigging, and spars on these boats are getting old. Many of the boats have high mileage, since a large percentage are used for long-distance offshore cruising. Be prepared to do relatively simple jobs like removing and rebedding stanchions and deck fittings, installing backing plates, and replacing a lot of rigging. Sails more than five years old-other than storm sails that have seen little or no use-are candidates for replacement.

All Alberg 35s were powered by the ubiquitous Atomic Four gasoline engine. If youre thinking about keeping an A35 for five or more years, think about replacing the engine-preferably with a diesel.

Of course, a lot of owners have already retrofitted their boats with diesels, but the installations will obviously vary dramatically in quality.

The pluses and minuses of replacing an old Atomic Four with a diesel are still debated at length online, although the tenor is more subdued these days. Certainly, a boat with a smooth running Atomic Four will serve its owner well, but in our view, the scales are pretty heavily tilted toward a diesel conversion. Finding a boat with a defunct Atomic Four and putting a diesel in it is a sure way to increase the value, although as with most boats of this age-even classics like the Alberg 35-you cannot expect that you will ever get out of the boat what you invest in it financially, should you decide to sell. The big benefits for switching to diesel are safety and the fact that the cruising range under power roughly doubles-a big plus in light-wind areas.

Westerbeke, which bought the Atomic Four line from the original manufacturer, makes three- and four-cylinder replacements. Betamarine advertises itself as the only manufacturer dedicated to supplying diesel engine replacements for the Atomic Four. Whichever replacement you choose, don’t assume a drop-in replacement. You will have to double-check all your measurements. In many cases, an upgrade to diesel from an Atomic Four means youll need to get a new prop as well.

Like most boats with the rudder mounted well forward and the prop fitted in an aperture, the Alberg 35 backs down poorly. This is simply a fact of life, so you have to get used to it. Steering ahead, the boat handles fine. The Atomic Four provides perfectly adequate power for the A35, giving a cruising speed of about 6 knots in calm water.

Because the Alberg 35 is narrow, it will seem cramped to those accustomed to the condo-like interiors of modern 35-footers. The arrangement, though, is pretty good.

Two interiors were built: One is the traditional interior of practically every boat built in the last 50 years, the other is a dinette arrangement, which became popular when people started looking for more workable galleys about 30 years ago. Both boats have large forward cabins with V-berths, a hanging locker, a bureau, and drawers under the berths. This is one reason the boat appeals to a lot of minimum-budget liveaboards. The forward cabin can be a real owners stateroom, even though it lacks a double berth. If you were handy, you could rip out the V-berths and build a good-sized diagonal double along either side of the cabin, building in additional storage opposite. The cabin is large enough that this wouldnt totally destroy standing space.

There are two bronze-framed opening ports and a hatch for ventilation in the forward cabin.

The head is aft of the forward cabin, and runs the full width of the boat-a good arrangement on a boat this narrow. With the doors to the main cabin and forward cabin shut, this creates a head compartment with a lot of elbow room. For daysailing, you only need to shut the door to the main cabin to get privacy-no worse than shutting the head door on any boat.

Ventilation is provided in the head via two opening ports plus a pair of cowl vents in Dorade boxes.

The Alberg 35 was one of the first boats of this size to be built with standard hot and cold, pressurized water, plus a shower. It was a big selling point back then; now it is taken for granted on a 35-foot boat.

The main cabin will have either the conventional arrangement of settee berths on each side with a fold-down table between, or the galley along one side with a U-shaped dinette opposite.

The dinette arrangement is a decidedly mixed blessing. By lowering the dining table, the dinette converts to a double berth. The original stove well in the dinette arrangement was big enough for a three-burner gimballed stove with oven, while the conventional aft galley has the rinky-dink two-burner alcohol stove that was standard equipment on most boats for many years.

With the dinette, there are two quarterberths aft that extend under the cockpit, and they are reasonable sea berths. In the conventional arrangement, you would use the main cabin settees as sea berths, which is also fine.

Quarterberths can be stuffy in tropical climates, and they tend to end up as inefficient catch-all spaces for anything that is too big or awkward to stow in lockers or drawers.

But the aft galley is no prize. The galley counters are quite low due to the boats low freeboard. There is a small single sink, plus the aforementioned instrument of torture in place of a stove, and an icebox whose top must perform double duty as galley work space and a rudimentary chart table. With the dinette arrangement, the dining table will probably double as the nav station, although wed be tempted to sacrifice one of the quarterberths to build in storage space plus a usable, stand-up nav station.

Its no wonder that at least one owner reports tearing out the entire aft galley and starting from scratch.

Ventilation in the main cabin is non-existent, except for the main companionway hatch. Because of the step in the cabin profile, fitting a ventilation hatch over this cabin is tricky, but it can be done.

Interior decor is very period, and the early 1960s were perhaps the nadir of interior design in sailboats. Low maintenance fever was at its peak, and wood-grain plastic laminate ran rampant.

Fortunately, this is nothing that a little painting can’t cure, or if youre really handy, you can laminate nice, clean, solid-color Formica over the old stuff on the counters and bulkheads, then varnish the wood trim. The improvement in interior appearance and apparent space would be amazing.

Conclusions

Weve presented a pretty intimidating list of drawbacks to the Alberg 35. Now lets look at the positive side. This is a sturdy, ruggedly built boat whose design and construction are suited for serious offshore sailing, with the caveat that you go through the boat from one end to the other, replacing every piece of gear thats tired, and reinforcing and repairing as necessary.

There are not too many boats that you can buy for this kind of money and then head off to Tahiti in reasonable security.

Built without the full-length molded fiberglass pans and liners that interfere with even modest modification, the Alberg 35 is stick built-a tinkerers dream. You may not be ready to build a boat from scratch, but you can do modifications on the Alberg 35 to your hearts content without going broke or destroying your investment.

The boat is really good-looking, especially compared to a lot of modern, high-sided tubs. If youre a fanatic, you can clean up, paint, and refinish the boat to look almost as good as a Hinckley Pilot-almost.

Some Alberg 35s have been meticulously maintained, and are in beautiful condition. Others have been beat to pieces by owners going cruising on the cheap. Wed look for a nice one, or one that had only cosmetic problems. The trick is figuring out which problems are only cosmetic.

A liveaboard couple can be comfortable on this boat, having much more elbow room than on a smaller modern live aboard cruiser for which youd pay more money.

You want a decent-sized boat for serious cruising, while spending about the same money as you would for a newer 27-footer? Consider the Alberg 35. Buy it, and be off for warmer places.

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of just 14.4 suggests that the Allmand 35 will need a stiff breeze to get her going. In light conditions, unless you've got plenty of time on your hands, motor-sailing may be the way to go.

Walter Scott was a yacht designer who worked for 30 years at Grumman Aerospace and then became the chief engineer at Irwin Yachts. He was involved with the design of many yachts from the Irwin line, such as the Irwin 10/4, the Allmand 35, and the Captiva 35. He also designed the Watkins 27, which went into production in 1977, and the Allmand 31, which appeared in 1979. He is known to have designed a number of other ‘one off’ boats. A masthead sloop is a sailboat with a single mast and a single headsail that is attached to the top of the mast. A fractional sloop is a sailboat with a single mast and a single headsail that is attached to a point below the top of the mast.

According to some sources, some of the benefits of a masthead sloop are:

  • It has a larger jib and a larger spinnaker than a fractional sloop, which can give it a speed advantage when sailing downwind.
  • It is easier to tune and more secure than a fractional sloop, because it has a backstay that directly opposes the forestay and keeps the mast in column.
  • It is more common on cruising sailboats and can be considered a more traditional way to rig a boat.

Some of the benefits of a fractional sloop are:

  • It has a smaller jib and a larger mainsail than a masthead sloop, which can make it easier to manage and maneuver around a racecourse.
  • It gives more control over the sail shape, because the forestay tension can affect the mast bend and the mainsail flatness.
  • It is more popular among racing sailboats and high-performance boats, because it can adapt to different wind conditions and sail changes better than a masthead sloop.

Of course, these are generalizations and there are pros and cons to both types of rigs. The choice depends on your sailing preferences, plans and goals.

Sailing Albania Guide: Everything You Need To Know Before You Go

Looking for information on sailing Albania? We have compiled everything you need to know!

The Adriatic Sea, the northern arm of the Mediterranean, is one of the world’s most popular sailing and cruising destinations. When most people think about sailing in the Adriatic, they generally think about Croatia. The Adriatic Sea, however, includes more than just the archipelago of the Dalmatian Coast.

Italy, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro , and Albania all lay claim to pieces of the Adriatic coastline. Sailors cruising the Adriatic for longer lengths of time, or those transitting, may pass along the coast of Albania.

Although Albania occupies a central 450km stretch of coastline which connects the southern Adriatic to the Ionian sea, many sailors sail through, opting not to stop in Albania, instead sailing past without ever checking into the country.

We decided, however, to check it out. To see what people were skipping and whether there was something there worth exploring. After all, we are veteran travelers, we have visited Albania in the past and enjoyed it immensely, these prissy sailors must not know what they are missing out on right? (Wrong.)

While Albania has many things to recommend and is definitely worth stopping by, explorers should be aware that the sailing and tourism industry lags behind its Adriatic neighbors in many ways. Sailing the coastline of Albania can be more challenging and at times downright frustrating as authorities and marine operators seem to go out of their way to make Albania as unfriendly to sailors as possible.

What is Sailing Albania Like

The food is great, it is very cheap. The scenery, especially in the south is very beautiful. Most of the people are very friendly, and it is not at all crowded with sailors as it is in nearby sailing destinations like Greece and Croatia . However, there are a number of challenges that can outweigh these positives.

Entering and exiting Albania, or indeed conducting the most basic transactions like purchasing diesel or LPG, often requires a middleman to carry out the very mundane ordinary procedure usually at exorbitant prices.

This begins the moment you try to step foot in the country. Border control in Montenegro, like many other countries, involves a brief visit to the Harbourmaster and a quick exchange with the border police. Right next door, Albania’s laborious check-in procedure is generally facilitated by an agent.

The agent’s job is ostensibly to navigate the complex procedure of registering your boat and clearing customs and immigration into the country. In reality, our experience checking into the country was conducted in a small run-down bar in the Shengjin port where our agent, who spoke only limited English filled in two forms and walked over to another table in the bar where the border police were sitting. We paid €60 for his services.

The country is not well set up for sailors and is without the infrastructure found in Croatia, Greece, or Montenegro. The only marinas were really just sections of large commercial ports, not fit for berthing sailing yachts. In the north, anchoring is forbidden and aggressive coast guards enforce this policy.

Minefields were at one point established along the coastline. Although they have apparently now been cleared, it is another thing to worry about when you do eventually reach the south of Albania where anchoring is permissible.

We were unable to compel anyone to help us within any sort of useful timeframe. The idea of avash avash, which translates to slowly slowly is touted as a wonderful feature of the Albanian culture. The motto of a relaxed and easy-going population. We found it difficult to get assistance with even the most basic of things like finding a mechanic, diesel, or LPG. We found it incredibly frustrating how people would so quickly and so adamantly promise the world only to completely ignore us.

For us, the issues we came up against, especially sailing in the north of Albania ended up outweighing the positives. Of course, many other people have enjoyed overwhelmingly positive experiences sailing here. Beyond the highlights mentioned above, it also offers one of the last frontiers of sailing in the Adriatic without hordes of other sailors, overdevelopment, or expensive marinas (although this is starting to change).

For those people ready to take on the challenges and earn the rewards of sailing in Albania forwarned is forearmed and going in with a good understanding of what to expect might help you maximize the potential of your Albanian Adventure.

To that end, we have rounded up some of the most important information on sailing Albania.

Entering and Exiting Albania By Boat

Arriving in or leaving Albania by boat means you will be required to check in or check out with the border police and the harbour master.

Unlike other countries where it is conventional to take care of this process yourself, in Albania you are generally required to use the services of a yachting agent. You need to make contact with an agent at your port of choice prior to your arrival in Albania and again with a new agent operating in your port of departure before you leave. They will then orchestrate the check-in process which works much like the process elsewhere albeit slower and less formal.

The agent will take care of any required paperwork so that you only need to turn up with your passport and boat documents.

Our check-in process went as follows. After checking out of Montenegro in Bar we sailed to Shëngjin, a port city in the north of Albania. The journey was 25 nautical miles, but without wind, it took us the best part of a day to motor slowly down the coast. We arrived just before 5 pm.

Our agent met us at the dock in the Shëngjin. It is possible to side dock here overnight while conducting the check-in process. There is no marina, nor any services available here. For this reason, many people checking in in the north of Albania sail past Shëngjin to Durrës where there is a makeshift marina within the port.

Leading us to the small rundown bar in the port, we sat down with the agent who spoke limited English. We ordered some cold drinks and set about the process of filling in the paperwork. The agent filled out a number of forms using our documents. And walked them over to another table where the border police were sitting.

After this, another woman took the documents and our passports to make photocopies.

When she returned, we were given our documents back but were told that we would have to return the following day to check our boat in as the harbor master had gone home for the day.

The following day the routine with the harbor master was similar. We sat at the same cafe bar with the agent and harbor master while some forms were completed, and we were sent on our way.

As with most places, original copies of passports, boat registration, skipper and VHF radio licenses, and boat insurance documents should be on hand.

We paid €50 for the agent and a further €10 which we believe was a port fee.

Our experience checking out in Sarandë was very different and a lot more professional. We used Sarandë Summer Tours they helped us organize extra services like laundry, gas, and car rental at a fantastic price. They were communicative and extremely helpful. When it came to checking out they took our documents, completed the required paperwork, and liaised with port authorities so that we never even saw a border agent and when they were finished (about fifteen minutes) we simply took our paperwork and left.

Anchoring in Albania

Perhaps the most frustrating thing about sailing in Albania is that the authorities do not seem to allow anchoring in the northern part of the country until as far down as Vlorë.

While our agent who helped us check in in Shëngjin assured us that we should “feel free” in Albania to stop and anchor anywhere we like, there are many reports of sailors being moved on by heavily armed police and military boats when anchoring in the north.

Our understanding, which comes from researching forums and navigation apps, indicates that sanctioned anchorages really begin south of Vlorë. This leaves almost a 100 nautical mile stretch of coastline where the only place to stop is marinas.

Once you get to Vlorë, there are a lot of nice anchorages, although many of them are exposed to the west.

Some of the best anchorages in Albania can be found near Vlorë, Llogara National Park, Himarë, and Sarandë.

Marinas in Albania

Unfortunately, there aren’t any dedicated yacht marinas in Albania, although one is currently under construction in Orikum.

Some ports, such as the one in Shëngjin and Vlorë may offer overnight mooring for vessels checking in or out of the country but are without even basic services.

There are however makeshift marinas in several ports along the Albanian coastline.

Cristian Marine Durrës

A section of the Durrës commercial port, which is used for ferries and container ships, has been turned into a marina with mooring lines, toilets, non-potable water, and electricity.

As a consequence of being an industrial port, it is an unpleasant place to stay for any length of time, and it is difficult to exit the port itself to reach the town.

The marina staff, although friendly, were unable to help us organize even the most basic of services (LPG gas, diesel, mechanical assistance) even though many promises were made to do so.

Once completed will represent Albania’s first dedicated marina and a big step forward in the yachting industry here. When we traveled through Albania, the marina was still under construction and by many accounts, not a nice place to stay.

Marina Sarandë

The marina in Sarandë is again, just part of a commercial ferry port where yachts can side dock or stern dock with an anchor. It does have electricity and water.

Sea Mines When Sailing Albania

Albania, like much of Europe, was mined during the Second World War. It was also potentially mined again during the Yugoslavian period.

The idea that the coast is mined pervades discussion of sailing Albania today and minefields have been included in many navigational charts.

It is difficult to find conclusive information online about the state of minefields that were identified on old charts. The most modern charts provided by Navionics do not have the minefield marked in 2022.

Most information online indicates that the minefields have indeed been cleared.

Perhaps the strong association between Albania and sea mines comes from the Corfu Strait Incident in which a destroyer was sunk as a result of an Albanian mine. The incident occurred in 1946 but affected British and Albanian diplomacy until 1991.

Nevertheless, the prevalence of this idea gives pause for thought whenever throwing out the anchor in Albania.

The Best Route for Sailing Albania

We sailed to Albania from Montenegro in the north. We sailed first to the port of Shëngjin, then onto Durres, Vlorë, Himarë, and finally Sarandë, where we checked out.

If I sailed Albania again, I would sail from south to north. The south is more beautiful. It is a better setup for sailors, has better-established check-in procedures, and is more welcoming in general to yachts with more ‘marinas’ and anchorages.

The north of the country has less to see, fewer marinas and sailing services, and it is not possible to anchor. Our experience sailing the north of the country took the wind out of our sails and left us with a negative impression of Albania. However, we managed to turn this around in the south of Albania which we greatly enjoyed.

Sailing Albania Itinerary

Below is an example itinerary with some of the most worthwhile stops along the coast of Albania.

Beginning in the south, the seaside town of Sarandë is probably the best place to begin a sailing adventure in Albania. There are a lot of yachting and travel services and the best shipping agents can be found here.

There is a nice protected anchorage in front of the town of Sarandë and a makeshift marina in front of the port authority.

Sarandë is a popular beach resort town with plenty of restaurants, bars, and beautiful beaches. It is also close to some popular tourist attractions including Syri Kalter, the Blue Eye Geyser, a variety of ruins documenting the area’s millennia of settlement, and the nearby historic Ottoman city of Gjirokaster. It is cheap and highly recommended to rent a car for a day to explore some of the nearby attractions.

Himarë is 20 nautical miles north of Sarandë, and there are a number of bays and beaches where it is possible to anchor between the two. Himarë offers a somewhat protected anchorage in front of a pretty, touristic town. Again, you’ll find beautiful beaches and plenty of affordable and delicious restaurants and bars.

Llogara National Park

Wild and rugged, this national park occupies a long peninsula in the county of Vlorë. One of the best ways to experience this coastal national park is by boat. Luckily if you are sailing the coast of Albania, this is unavoidable.

It offers some of the most striking scenery on the Albanian coastline, with soaring peaks of the Ceraunian mountain range, and numerous coves and bays. It is possible to find beautiful secluded anchorages when sailing Llogara.

Castles, monasteries, and mosques can all be found nearby the town of Vlorë in the county of Vlorë which also has some beautiful beaches and anchorages.

Durrës is potentially the best place to check out of Albania in the north with the best nautical services, yachting agents (for checking out) as well as a marina with water, electricity, and toilets.

The city of Durrës may not be the most beautiful along the Albanian coastline but it still has its fair share of historical places, museums, and attractions as well as a busy restaurant, bar, and nightlife scene.

Durrës is also just 30 kilometers from the Albanian capital of Tirana, which is a popular spot for tourists.

Durrës is 50 nautical miles south of Bar, the first possible port to check into in Montenegro, and 80 nautical miles east of Brindisi, Italy. Durrës is 100 nautical miles south of Dubrovnik, Croatia.

MORE TIPS AND FAQS FOR SAILING Albania

Below are some common questions asked when sailing Albania. If we left anything out, please let us know.

Is Albania Good for Sailing?

The climate, beautiful coastline, interesting history, welcoming culture, and strong tourism industry are all present in Albania. However, sailing tourism is not well supported. Albania is not really recognized for its sailing or cruising like its Mediterranean neighbors.

Albania suffers from a lack of nautical services as such you won’t find any true marinas, only commercial ports where it is possible to moor and perhaps accesses electricity and water.

There are no anchorages in the north (until Vlorë) and many sailors report being moved on by authorities when they have tried to anchor.

Albania is not as well protected as some sailing areas of Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece, and without the aforementioned safe anchorages or marinas, it can be treacherous for sailors.

Because of these reasons, sailing can be more challenging in Albania.

On the other hand, some will see this lack of development in sailing tourism as an opportunity. One of the last frontiers in the Mediterranean is where you can escape the superyachts, charter boats, and party flotillas.

How Far Is It to Sail from Montenegro to Albania?

From the southernmost checkout point of Bar in Montenegro to the first available port in Albania in Shëngjin, it is 25 nautical miles.

Many people, however, opt to sail past Shëngjin for Durrës, a further 25 nautical miles away, as Durrës has better facilities. Where Shëngjin only has a wharf-to-side dock while carrying out check-in procedures, Durrës offers a ‘marina’ which is really just a section of the commercial port but at least offers mooring lines, toilets, and wifi.

How Far is it to Sail from Greece to Albania?

Sailing from Greece to Albania is simple.

Starting from the Ionian island of Corfu, check out at the port authority in Corfu town or Gouvia. Afterward, you can sail just 15 nautical miles across the strait of Corfu to Sarandë. Sarandë is the best port in Albania to check into offering a sheltered anchorage and a makeshift marina, albeit without mooring lines.

How Far Is It to Sail from Italy to Albania?

You can check out in Brindisi, Italy, and sail to and check into Durrës 80 nautical miles away.

What’s the Deal with Fuel in Albania?

With the exception of Sarandë in the south, there are no public marine petrol stations in Albania, another consequence of the non-existent yachting industry. Diesel for boats is generally trucked in large quantities and any must be pre-arranged through a fuel company or third party.

Of course, no one is going to bother delivering the individual quantities of fuel required for a tiny sailboat. For that reason, finding fuel for your boat is a well-known challenge in Albania.

You can, by prior arrangement, organize smaller amounts of fuel through marina operators or agents. Alternatively, take jerry cans to land-based petrol stations to refuel.

Can I Rent a Sail Boat in Albania?

While the charter industry is not as established in Albania as in the rest of the Adriatic, it is possible to rent a yacht in Albania.

How to Get a Sim Card in Albania?

Vodafone has reliable coverage at a reasonable price and stores are well dispersed in most towns ad certainly in the port towns of Shenjin, Durrës, and Sarandë.

You will need to purchase a sim from a Vodafone store (€20 at time of writing) and they will require a passport to activate the sim.

After activation, you can add data. We purchased an unlimited data plan for €8 for thirty days.

Coverage was reliable along the coast but you can confirm data coverage using the coverage map at Nperf .

Where Can I Buy an Albanian Courtesy Flag?

You are required to fly an Albanian flag when sailing in the waters of Albania, a fact we were reminded of by port police the moment we arrived. Luckily we had prepurchased a flag in Montenegro, however, there are also nautical stores in all the major port towns.

Climate in Albania

The coast of Albania enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate. Wet winters with mild temperatures between 1 and 20 degrees and dry, hot summers when the temperatures generally range between 15 degrees and 35 degrees.

Sailing Winds in Albania

Albania shares the same wind patterns as its Adriatic neighbors to the north and east. Scirocco, Garbi, Punente, Maestro and (in the north of the country) the Bora.

Without the protection of an archipelago, the Albanian coast is exposed to winds blowing from Italy in the west, such as the Garbi, which can be problematic for sailors.

Language(s) of Albania

Albanian is the official language of Albania and is spoken throughout. Many Albanians also speak Italian, German, and/or French. In the south, Greek is often spoken as a second language.

English is widely used in tourist areas however the level of English is often low and can make communication difficult at times.

Credit Cards and Currency in Albania

Albania is largely a cash economy and credit cards are not widely accepted.

Although the official currency in Albania is the Albanian lek (ALL), the Euro is widely accepted, even in mom-and-pop corner stores. If you do plan to pay in Euro, expect to pay a slight premium and to receive your change in Albanian lek.

There are plenty of ATMs in towns and tourist centers but most ATMs will charge a percentage or a fixed fee to withdraw cash. The fee can be pretty large compared to some of the other countries in the Mediterranian.

At one point, trying to withdraw $5,000 Albanian lek in Shengjin, the bank fee would have been $1,750 lek or just shy of €15.

In our experience, the best bank to withdraw money from was Credins Bank.

Many exchange offices are found throughout Albania, and most offer a fairly decent rate, especially when compared to the bank fees for ATM withdrawals. Check the exchange online and compare it to the exchange rate being offered in the currency office before handing over cash.

If you take out or exchange money, we recommend getting the minimum amount you will need. Albanian lek is a closed currency meaning you cannot exchange money outside of Albania.

Time zone in Albania

Albania is in the Central European time zone (GMT + 1).

On the last Saturday in March, the time zone switches to GMT + 2, until the last Sunday in October.

Drinking-Water in Albania

In Albania most people (when possible) use bottled water for drinking and tap water only for washing and cooking. Here, the issues with tap water stem from over chlorination which can lead to cramps and illness, and a lack of regulation which can mean a contaminated water supply.

It is recommended not to drink tap water in Albania. Large 12L jugs can be purchased for approximately $200 lek or less than €2.

According to the seller, this vessel is in top shape. Everything is functional and in good working order. Updated batteries and thru-hulls as well as other upgrades set this boat apart from the pack. All cabin features, stove, fridge, and more are all good to go. All electronics, with the exception of the single-side-band radio, are less than 7 years old. The windlass is a Loughren-Tigres model with 275' of chain and 175' of 3/4" anchor line attached to a 55' Rocna anchor, all dating from 2018. Propane lines were replaced in 2020. Fridge is from 2017. Stock #365153 RARE 1981 Niagara 35 bluewater cruiser, updated throughout, ready to hit the high seas! This Niagara 35 is a classic built by Hinterhoeller Yachts for open water cruising. Thoughtful use of available space allows for great storage space and generates a roomy, spacious feel belowdecks not normally found in a 35-foot sailboat. This boat was built like a tank for handling any reasonable seas. Another feature rarely found in vessels of this size is a manufacturer-installed fireplace / heater which would be appreciated on adventures to the colder climes. This boat had a bottom job in 2022. In 2020, old batteries and thru-hulls were replaced with new ones. In 2019 the staysail and chain plate were replaced and radar installed. The fireplace is a wood burner and can also burn manufactured logs, coal or charcoal briquettes. It keeps the entire boat T-shirt temperature all winter long. The conventional head has been converted to a composting toilet with the holding tank space now occupied by a bank of 6 batteries along the centerline to improve the balance of the boat. The batteries are broken into a bank of 4 house batteries and 2 engine / windlass batteries. The seller is including a roller furling boom that needs only to be installed to replace the standard boom. Also included is a portable high output 40" double membrane water maker capable of producing 26-37gph of clean water and a brand new, never used, Air Line R360XL Hookah Dive System. All total, this is a great package for the cruise-minded sailor. A quality vessel at a good price. Reason for selling is not using enough.

1982 Non-Such Hinterhouller Cat boat. These are Great sailing boats and very easy to sail. Once the sail is up you can just sit back and enjoy the ride. Tacking is so easy and this boat responds in the lightest wind. The cockpit is huge for a 30 foot boat. The 12 ft beam is incredible inside. It has the room of most 35ft boats. The Volvo inboard runs great and has plenty of power. The teak holly floor is in great shape and was replace once. The boat needs some work but is in sail shape and is taken out as is. The paint below the rub rails need to be painted and new bottom paint which is why its the cheapest 30 ft non- such in the world. It was out the water and cleaned 2 years ago. This boat brings 35-50k in top shape please do your research you will not have a chance to get a working sailing Non-Such for such a great deal. The boat needs some tlc new lines, cleaning, overall exterior cleaning and teak work, but is overall very sound. This is the perfect boat for an elder sailor or someone that loves to sail with very little work like I said you sit back and have fun no winching when your sailing. Forward Cabin. . Double Berth to Port, single berth Starboard with upper shelf for storage. Beneath has storage space that includes two small vertical Drawers. The cushions are original and show wear but no rips. The Shower Salon and Head Area is very large with propane water heater. The Head area contains a Counter that includes a Stainless Steel Sink. Under the sink is storage space. The Galley is L shaped, and located on the Port side with a large Counter top. A deep Stainless Steel Sink is supported with both Manual and Automatic systems to provide Water Access. Located below the Sink is a stowage locker to store, Cleaners and various other articles. Also provides access to Bronze thru Hole fittings, and pump for different water flow setting. Aft of the cold storage area is a Gimbaled Range Stove and Oven. Aft is a 6'6 Foot Settee and under the Settee is the other water tank plus additional storage. Sail area is an incredible 540 Sq. feet, with two reefing points. Raising the Sail is simplified via the use of the windless. In addition to Raising the sail, all aspects of necessary sail adjustments, including, reefing are controlled within the Cockpit. When the Sail is lowered, it settles into Lazy Jack Lines. The sail is original and in good working order. There are three lockers in the Cockpit, Port and Starboard, with easy access to the Engine, the third aft for two Propane tanks. Extra lines etc. This boat is built like a brick shit house. It leaks no water and I would sail it anywhere. It is a great live aboard. The folding swim Ladder is located on the Stern. Custom made Cockpit Cushions cover the entire seating area. There is a bimini frame needs new cover. Forward, the Vessel has a bowsprit with rollers to accommodate two anchors, A 35 lb. CQR and 30 lb. Danforth.... Additional Equipment included: Fire extinguishers, fenders, life jackets, Dock lines and extra lines. Initially it was purchased in Houston with big plans to sail the Caribbean but life unfortunately got in the way. During that time I've refit many of the items on the boat and this is outlined above.- Yes the boat can be viewed in Key West, Florida, USA. For those that are interested message me and I'll give you the contact details of my local Key West broker.- The boat is currently Australian registered but will be de-registered as part of the sale. So the new owner can get the boat re-registered with the USCG.- Yes the boat is capable of offshore voyages, but no I wouldn't jump in this tomorrow and sail across the Pacific. Not due to any structural fault in the boat. I would add better water storage, a water maker, fit the wind vane, purchase some spare sails, fit a full bimini cover etc. before committing to such a voyage. Owned by a 50T Coast Guard Master Licensed Captain with sailing/towing endorsements. We're offering for sale our Legend 37 sailboat. She has around 500 hours on the Yanmar 3HM35F 34hp diesel. Injectors and injection pump have been rebuilt. New lift pump. ~450w of solar panels and a Xantrex 2000 inverter. Sails are two years old. 3 year old Hypalon dinghy on davits with 9.8hp Tohatsu outboard. Honda eu3000i generator. Cash only (no seller financing, etc).She is priced on the upper end of her class, but the others aren't necessarily turn-key. We'd be happy to take a serious buyer out for a daysail to experience how quick and smooth she runs.Our vessel is turn key after we have gone through everything over the years. We have owned her around 5 years and now have 10 footitis.Five year old bimini and dodger installed (along with targa fill piece) and replaced the standing rigging.September 2010 we replaced the steering chain, steering cable, throttle cable, and shift cable.In March 2011 we installed a new Mermaid M16 (16,500 BTU) reverse cycle heat and air unit with FX1 digital control system.We also hauled out in March 2011 for fresh bottom paint. SR60 by Petit was what we used. 3 coats overall and 4 along the waterline, leading and trailing edges. Paint is still in great condition according to our diver and will probably last another year or two with maintenance, but we'd be happy to repaint the bottom for a buyer after closing.August 2011 we purchased a Honda eu3000i electric start generator, which runs the a/c and all power as needed.November 2011 we installed a complete new Coldmachine refrigerator with a small freezer box. It is a large fridge area. November 2011 we rebuilt all of the winches and replaced any worn parts.February 2012 we replaced the head.May 2012 we installed 3 140w solar panels and a Xantrex SW2012 100amp charge/inverter with control panel.June 2012 installed 4 Klipsch outdoor speakers ($500/pair).August 2012 we replaced the two burner stove/broiler, with a new Force 10 two burner stove/oven and a new 17# fiberglass propane tank.September 2012 we replaced the mainsail with a new custom built sail and a new mainsail cover; we still have the repaired original that is usable, but not necessary with the new sail. We also rebuilt the injectors, injection pump, and replaced the lift pump, so the fuel system is in top shape.March 2013 we replaced the holding tank with a 20 gallon waste grade bag.August 2013 repainted the non-skid.September 2013 we replaced the headsail with a new one. We still have the old one, which is still usable. We still have the usable sail we removed. November 2013 we installed the R2D2 Raycor filter gauge.August 2014 replaced the wall carpet in the v-berth. We also had the a/c professionally serviced by the factory to keep it in top running condition. We have also touched up the non-skid in high wear areas.Manson Supreme anchor, which has held over 300k pounds of boat (rafter on a single hook) with friends who will back that up. We have 120 feet of chain and 250 feet of line for a 370 foot total rode.Wifi boost antenna and router which enhances wifi reliability on the boat tremendously.She has well supported davits holding a 2011 RIB and 2012 9.8 4-stroke outboard.She also has a spinnaker with sock.6 Group 29 batteries with nearly 700aH of capacity. With the solar, you can stay out for days without charging.

The Allmand 35 is a 34.75ft masthead sloop designed by W. H. Scott and built in fiberglass by Allmand Boats Inc.(USA) between 1981 and 1985.

The Allmand 35 is a heavy sailboat which is slightly under powered. It is reasonably stable / stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser. The fuel capacity is originally small. There is a short water supply range.

A metà degli Anni '70 il cantiere Alb Sail di Caselette (Torino) ha prodotto questo corsaiolo 3/4 tonner.

Armato a sloop con fiocco in testa d’albero, alle doti velocistiche il Ba 35 associa un’ottima abitabilità sia sottocoperta che in pozzetto. Gli interni sono razionalmente suddivisi in tre ambienti principali: due cabine, una poppiera e una prodiera, entrambe a due letti, e un ampio quadrato. Qui c’è un tavolo centrale con divani laterali e, verso poppa, a fianco della discesa dal pozzetto, cucina a dritta e tavolo da carteggio a sinistra. Il locale wc separa il quadrato dalla cabina di prua. La barca è realizzata interamente in vetroresina, con la coperta rivestita di teak a liste. La motorizzazione è affidata a un entrobordo diesel con potenze da 12 a 25 cavalli. Nella zona poppiera vi sono infine capaci gavoni per lo stivaggio di vele e attrezzature.

B AY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A Bay County man is in custody after deputies say he ran from authorities after crashing into a boat ramp.

On Saturday evening, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office said a car was pulled over on Thomas Drive for driving 64 mph in a 35-mph zone.

The driver, identified as David Anthony Snyder III, reportedly slowed down once the deputy turned his lights on, then entered back into traffic lanes and sped up, turning north on Dolphin Drive.

Snyder allegedly drove at a high rate of speed, almost hit a bicyclist, and eventually crashed into the water at the Dolphin Drive County boat ramp.

Officials say four pilings were broken in half, his vehicle was flipped, and deputies went into the water to rescue Snyder.

When he was out of the water and back at the ramp, Snyder told deputies he was driving alone. He was then taken to a local medical facility for treatment, where he remains.

BCSO said warrants have been issued for fleeing and eluding and violation of probation.

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be.   • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio
