Customized yacht financing

Financing a special and unique asset.

The bow of a boat at sea

A yacht is a significant purchase — one that requires considerable knowledge in both the acquisition and financing processes. Whether you’re searching for the right craft, constructing a new one or having your current yacht refitted, the yacht division at Bank of America Private Bank can help you achieve your objectives with a customized credit solution aligned with your ownership structure and cash flow. We have helped hundreds of clients acquire substantial vessels and can offer you the benefits of this experience.

Working with the yacht-finance specialists at Bank of America, you can benefit from:

  • In-depth knowledge of the product offerings in the yacht industry
  • Financing solutions designed around your needs
  • All the resources of one of the most respected financial institutions

Consultation and guidance

The yacht specialists are focused and seasoned veterans. Their experience in both customized yacht financing and addressing the intricacies of the purchasing process provides them with an understanding of the key players in the yacht market, including builders, brokers and surveyors, as well as legal, insurance and other industry professionals.

Whether your dreams include owning a luxury motor yacht, a sleek sailboat or a sport fishing vessel, the specialists at Bank of America, N.A. can help. The team draws upon these strengths: in-depth knowledge of the yacht industry, experience in wealth management and the extensive resources of a leading financial institution.

We can work with your tax and legal advisors as your specialized consultant to guide you through the process of purchasing and financing your yacht. We understand that buying a yacht should be a pleasure, and we want to help you move seamlessly through your buying experience.

A resource for first-time buyers  — The team of specialists will walk you through the process, from registration, tax and insurance issues to ownership and loan structures. Where appropriate, we will refer you to the industry professionals who can provide you with the guidance you will need to make informed decisions on these important issues.

We also can pass on valuable insights we have gained from helping other clients. These insights can help you decide whether to buy an existing yacht or construct a new one, whether to offer your yacht for charter, and how to handle crew issues.

Structuring an appropriate loan  — Just as a yacht reflects your lifestyle, so should its financing structure. The specialists will talk with you about your unique financial needs to help determine a loan structure that works for you. With customized repayment options, loan terms and amortization schedules, we offer considerable flexibility in how to structure credit. Alternatives can be simple or more sophisticated, including risk management strategies.

Registering your yacht  — Many of our clients choose to register their yachts in a foreign jurisdiction. The reasons are many and include tax considerations, crew hiring and estate planning issues. Our goal is to help ensure that you have all the information you need to make the decision that best fits your needs.

Building a custom yacht versus buying a completed yacht  —   Construction projects require an added level of knowledge, which few lending institutions possess. We provide construction financing for many of our clients, and will be able to share multiple perspectives with you based upon our knowledge and years of experience working with clients, shipyards, surveyors and brokers.

At Bank of America, the yacht specialists have assisted clients on financing projects in the United States and abroad. We’ve visited many shipyards, so we have a firsthand understanding of the construction process and special considerations involved in building a custom yacht. We’ve participated in financing projects ranging from small in size to very large, multimillion-dollar projects. We also can provide information on managing currency risk, offering solutions such as multicurrency loans.

Considerations and risks

  • Customized lending solutions involve special risks and may not be appropriate for all clients.
  • Customized lending solutions may be subject to additional credit and legal approval.
  • Clients should consult with their independent attorney, tax advisor and investment manager before implementing any financial, tax or estate planning strategy.
  • Clients should also consider their portfolio diversification requirements, time horizon, risk tolerance, debt tolerance, tax situation and any cash flow and appreciation objectives they may have.

The resources of a leader

In addition to customized yacht financing, Bank of America Private Bank offers access to sophisticated credit capabilities and a depth of resources, experience and capital strength that few financial institutions can match. The critical dimension we bring to this relationship is a high level of personal service, because you work with one knowledgeable specialist who seeks to ensure that your credit strategy effectively complements the rest of your wealth management strategy.

The yacht financing product offerings include traditional term loans for the purchase of new or pre-owned yachts, refit loans, bridge loans, construction loans and cash-out loans. We work with you to identify a loan structure to help meet your financial needs.

Please contact your Bank of America Private Bank to learn more about yacht financing options.

Your Bank of America Private Bank advisor can introduce you to a credit executive from Bank of America, N.A. who is a specialist in yacht financing. Together they can assemble a team to evaluate your financial picture and structure a financing solution designed to meet your unique needs.

The Ultimate Guide to Yacht Financing: Finding Flexible Solutions

yacht finance consultant

What’s the Deal with Yacht Financing?

When you’re thinking about getting a yacht, how you’re going to pay for it is a big question. It’s about more than just finding the cash; it’s about making sure the way you pay fits with your life and money situation. You’ve got a few paths you can take, like getting a loan, leasing, or maybe using your savings. Each option has its perks and things to watch out for. It’s about digging into your finances and seeing what makes sense for you. Today, there are a bunch of ways to finance a yacht, making it easier for more people to get into yachting. Do your homework, maybe chat with a money expert, and think about how this fits into your future money plans.

What Are Your Options Anyway?

There are a few different ways you can go about financing a yacht. Traditional loans from banks or places that specialize in boat loans are common. These kinds of loans usually need a down payment, and you’ll be looking at various lengths of time to pay it back and different interest rates. Leasing is another route, offering some wiggle room and potentially lower monthly costs, but with some limits on making the yacht your own and how you use it. If you’ve got the dough, paying with your savings means you own it outright from day one, no strings attached. Each way of financing has its own set of rules, like credit checks, how much down payment you need, and making sure you can really afford it.

Why Flexible Financing Might Be Your Best Friend

Having options when you’re looking to finance a yacht can make a big difference. It makes owning a yacht possible for a lot of people by letting you adjust your payments to fit your budget. This means you might not need a huge pile of cash to start, and you can find a payment plan that doesn’t mess up your finances. Being able to change your payment schedule, interest rates, and how long you have to pay back the loan means you can keep your money situation stable while enjoying life on your yacht. It’s all about finding the sweet spot where you can live your dream without going broke.

Making Sense of the Financing Puzzle

Sure, figuring out how to finance a yacht can seem tough, but getting a handle on the process helps a lot. Start by taking a good look at your money situation to see what you can really afford. This means looking at your income, what you spend, and any debts you have. Then, check out different financing options and compare them to find the best fit. It’s also a good idea to have all your paperwork ready, like proof of income and tax returns, to make things smoother. Getting help from pros, like financial advisors and yacht brokers, can give you the inside scoop, making it easier to decide.

How Yacht Brokers Make Financing Easier

A good yacht broker is a game-changer when it comes to financing. They know the ins and outs of the market and have connections with lenders that can make the process smoother for you. They’ll walk you through everything, helping you pick the best financing option and wrapping up the purchase. Brokers can also hook you up with special financing deals you might not find on your own. Their expertise helps you tackle the complicated parts of financing, finding a solution that works with your finances and life goals.

When it comes to finding flexible financing for your yacht, Fly Yachts is here to guide you through all the options and make sure you find the one that fits just right. Reach out to a Fly Yachts team member, and let us take the hassle out of financing, so you can start planning your next adventure on the water.

yacht finance consultant

In his 30+ year career as a professional seafarer Franc has managed over 150 yachts including some of the largest and most iconic in the world: ECSTASEA and PELORUS.

A qualified Navigational Officer, Marine Engineer, Technical Manager and Class Surveyor and former Yacht Management Director with two of the industry’s leading providers, Franc is known and respected throughout the superyacht industry for his candour and client centric approach to Yacht Management.

One of the first to introduce commercial shipping discipline into yachting, he has worked with leading associations such as MYBA, PYA and SYBASS to negotiate, develop and implement regulations such as the MCA Large Yacht Code and the ILO MLC 2006 which have helped shape the future of this industry.

“The most technically qualified and experienced yacht operator I know!”

Theo HOONING SYBAss (Superyacht Builders’ Association)

Proudest Professional Moment

Securing delivery of a yacht to the Owner in time for his family cruise, after he had been told that the shipyard couldn’t possibly finish it on time. It meant me having to cancel my holiday so I could be with the Captain 24/7.

But we pulled together a great crew and made it happen – the sea trials were being conducted on the way to meeting the Owner and his guests. I will never forget the look on the Owner’s face when he first saw his yacht. It was magnificent.

Professional Mantra

One person does one thing, one time (and records it once).

I hate inefficiency and pointless admin.

Whether you are working ashore or on the yacht, we share information in a clever way to avoid doubling up on work and wasting time rehashing information for reporting.

Biggest Professional Gripe

The lack of transparency in this industry. That’s why we go so far in the other direction – full transparency.

Our clients have 24/7 access to the bank accounts and book-keeping system we operate. They have access to all our records 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Our clients can see the good, the bad and the ugly. They see the problems and they see the way we solve them. It’s the foundation of trust!

Passions & Pastimes

Building motorbikes.

“I get a real kick out of engineering, speed and being on the open road. Building classic motorbikes is the gift that keeps on giving. I have built a Café Racer from a 1981 Kawasaki and a Scrambler from a 1987 Moto Guzzi NX650. They’re beautiful. And living in the south of France there is no shortage of mountain roads, coast roads and perfect weather to be out there all the time. And I still manage to honour my wife’s wish to not buy another bike – I just buy the parts and build them instead!!”

Sam Thompson

Commercial director, yacht manager & head of jms crew.

  • Experience : 12 years (seagoing), 6 years Recruitment and Yacht Management (ashore).
  • Languages : English & French
  • Certification : Cert RP, Master 3000GT.

yacht finance consultant

Sam began his yachting career back in 1994 working on an 80 metre (262 feet) yacht that led him on an epic adventure to Thailand. He hasn’t looked back since.

A qualified Master 3000GT he worked on six yachts including two new builds before moving on land to start a family and specialise in professional recruitment for the Oil & Gas industry and commercial shipping working with industry leaders such as Technip, Subsea 7, BP Shipping and Bibby Ship Management.

A passionate sailor, Sam is a much liked industry professional whose known ability for getting things done is respected by Owners and Captains.

“Sam has been a massive help with finding new crew. Any crew he placed with us have been exactly what we were looking for, and are all still on board well over 12 months later.”

Marc Van Loon 42m, M/Y CLICIA

The first time I realised that some advice I had passed onto a young crew member helped them to get to exactly where they wanted in their career. That was an extremely proud moment.

When I first joined this industry I got some great advice and guidance from a gentleman called Adrian J. Fisher. He was the reference in crew recruitment in those days, someone who certainly didn’t need to speak to a greenie like me, but he did, and it helped me understand what the whole industry is about.

So being in a position to be able to offer the sort of help and guidance dear old Adrian offered me, is gratifying to say the least.

I detest BS so I make sure I don’t deal in it. My biggest beef? Tell it like it is…life is so much simpler when we all know where we stand.

Sorry, but I have to say it…those Crew Agency cowboys who pollute our industry by just passing over crew CVs to Owners and Captains without as much as a reference check or interview. It makes my blood boil when I hear stories like that.

We, like all respectable Crew Agencies, are here to help Owners and Captains win valuable time and reduce the risk of high crew turnover by only presenting qualified, reference and certificate checked candidates, and in our case, candidates who we have also personality and character profiled to help ensure the maximum chance of successful integration. That’s how we earn our money and its how our clients end up saving theirs.

CRICKET, FAMILY & FRIENDS

“ I love cricket – watching and playing it. I notched up 220 runs ‘not out’ in a league game in the UK once…that’s something you will hear a lot more about I am sure, if we start working together. However since moving to the South of France I have limited opportunity to play these days, so I have reverted to my second passion in life and bought a very old motor boat which I take the family out on during the summer and spend all winter fixing. I spent a large part of my adult life crewing yachts, so passing on my enjoyment of the water to my kids and friends is just fun. For me a great weekend is to sail between the islands off Cannes, have a BBQ on board watching the sun go down with a glass of wine and swim with the sunrise in the morning. Perfect!“

  • Experience : 1 year in Yachting Management, 14 years in a Class Society, 13 years at sea 4 of which as Chief Engineer on commercial vessels.

yacht finance consultant

I started my professional life as an Engineer, and once reached the position of Chief Engineer I decided to go ashore to become a surveyor/auditor for a class society. I worked for that class society for 14 years and when I left I was North Europe operations manager; being educated as engineer, I was proud of such an achievement. Moreover during my farewell party I was given as a gift a picture book of the last 14 years including lots of very positive personal notes. Clients and colleagues were complementing on the always positive and problem solving approach I had. Some even referred that I had a positive influence on their career and personal life.

Problems and challenges are there to be solved. Let’s not avoid them but find answers and tackle them.

That will be bureaucracy in whatever form or shape. The best way to describe bureaucracy is mentioned in a phrase of the tv program “Little Britain”; computer says no! I will always be eager to find the “yes”.

For Alex the moment he saw a yacht sailing into Nantucket he knew he was destined for the sea, scroll on 45 years and it is still his passion, joy and life. Throughout these four decades he has worked, first as Crew and then as Captain, on vessels ranging from 52-75 metres.

His commands have taken him to the Caribbean, England, Holland, the Baltic Sea and St. Petersburg as well as throughout the Mediterranean Sea.

During these 45 years he has been involved in overseeing major projects and refits which then led to a degree in Marine Surveying.

His proudest achievement was being the Master of the 56 metre Feadship RIO RITA for 23 years, sailing extensively each year in Greek Waters.

As a member of the JMS Team Alex will be continuing his Maritime journey and passing on all his years of experience to Clients, Captains and Crew.

Seeing crew who I have mentored find fulfillment in their yachting careers and now commanding their own Yachts.

Okay, okay!! Before you put me in a box, read on.

The Challenge – At least once a year I find myself at the top of a 15 metre ladder pruning two long terraced 15-17 metre cedar hedges

The Art – The creation through landscaping of something unique that expresses my sense of order. The sculpting of yesteryear’s fronds to present a flourishing bouquet of new growth on my 6 metre Mediterranean palm. The mixing of colours, sizes & timing of blooms to maintain a continual year-round flowering.

The Harvest – Whether lemons, olives, tomatoes, fresh herbs or flowers; the pride felt for something you have nurtured.

Nature’s Rewards – A stabilizing, cleansing, nourishing clearing of the mind. Tranquility & appreciation by self and others of a job well done. “Tending one’s own garden is not only a private activity but also productive.” – Voltaire 1759

Much of the above is also attributable to my other great passion; SAILING

I used to be a Property Manager in Sydney managing commercial assets. A couple of tenants brought a bottle of Champagne as a Christmas gift. The owner heard the tenants coming into the office and he was astounded as it had never happened in his 30 + years of experience. It proved that issues can always be positively resolved when you have the right state of mind. It is all about your attitude and putting yourself in other’s people shoes.

When there is a will, there is a way. Determination brings you to the top. It may take time but you will eventually get there as the road to success is always under construction.

Feeling superior because of a status. I truly dislike professionals who feel they can disrespect or take advantage of someone simply because of a title. Working as a team and being humble are crucial elements for long-term success, maintaining relationships and coming up with creative ideas.

SPORTS AND NATURE

“I adore snowboarding and the fresh mountain air: it teaches me to get up when I fall, literally and metaphorically. The panorama of the snow and mountains with a blue sky gives me a greater respect and appreciation of nature. In addition, I enjoy riding my motorbike along the coast and in the mountains, it allows me the freedom to explore and gaze at stunning viewpoints. Lastly, I have a soft spot for sports cars: the sound, the sensation and the speed. There is a certain feeling that can only be experienced racing for the first time on a track. I am grateful to experience these adventures in such beautiful areas.”

“You might expect me to come up with something from the big corporate days, but honestly I think it has to be working with Franc setting up JMS in what was then a small basement office opposite a bakery. There were some amazing hurdles to get over but the beauty of it was always having a fresh croissant on our doorstep every morning!”

“Orange is the new Black. I love Orange, I love Holland – I am even proud to wear an orange dress from time to time 😉”

Driving to Monaco and getting a fine for fast driving??!!

🙃….but thats not what you mean by a prof gripe I guess, lol.

Well, French Administration really annoys me, but that’s part of my job.

“If it keeps me fit and it’s outdoors then I love it – running, mountain biking, swimming and especially canyoning. And where we live in the South of France there are some fantastic places to go canyoning. Real adrenaline rush stuff. “I guess what thrills me, what makes me feel alive is being out there in it with nature and people and different cultures, different languages. That’s the variety of life. The fun of it. I recently bought a house in a little village down here in the South of France and I love it, the countryside around us, the beaches, the nature and we are right next to the most amazing ice-cream shop in the world. Carola has 9 years of expertise in naval architecture and marine engineering.

Let’s dive into her incredible journey !

Born in Genoa, Italy, Carola’s passion for the water began early through years of dedicated swimming.

Fluent in Italian, English, German, and French, Carola’s linguistic prowess reflects her passion for connecting with diverse maritime communities.

Her journey started at RINA Classification Society, where she conducted surveys and refits on yachts between Tuscany and the South of France. Yachting became her first love.

In 2018, Carola joined Lloyd’s Register, overseeing five shipyards in Tuscany as a site surveyor and project manager for new build yachts and passenger vessels. An opportunity to witness the entire delivery process, bridging the gap between owners and shipyards.

In 2020, she returned to Genoa as LR team leader, steering a team of three surveyors in the construction of Seabourn project. Two luxury expedition sister ships, navigating the complexities of DP and Polar Code compliance at T. Mariotti shipyard.

I was very happy when, after the delivery of the last big NB project, both shipyard and Owner were thankful and recognised that I had been helpful and contributed to the successful delivery of the vessel, also because of continuous efforts to keep open and positive communication between all parties, I was proud to hear my work was an added value.

Be here now. A gentle self-reminder to avoid multitasking inclination and allow people around me to have 100% of my attention.

Arrogance, prevarication and bad manners in general. There is nothing that cannot be said with a smile and kindness.

Fluent in English, Catalan, and Spanish, Ramon adds a multilingual flair to our team, ensuring smooth communication across borders and seas.

Despite facing a major back injury, Ramon’s determination and resilience shone bright as he fought his way back to the deck, proving himself as a true sailor and earning the role of Chief Mate. His mantra, “An hour of planning can save you ten hours of doing,” reflects his dedication to excellence.

Ramon firmly believes in the power of teamwork. For him, collaboration and support are not just buzzwords but essential elements for success in any endeavour.

With professional degrees in Sea Transport and supervision of ship machinery and installations, Ramon’s expertise extends beyond the waves. From his first position as a deckhand on a sailing yacht to serving as a Chief Officer and Project Manager, his journey has been nothing short of remarkable.

As he embarks on his first shore-side job, Ramon brings with him a wealth of sea-faring wisdom and a fresh perspective to our team.

I was previously working for a large international fashion retailer Boohoo, and enjoyed the experience thoroughly. It really helped to grow my passion for the industry and my own creativity with style.

For the past 20 years I managed to expand my small company to new industrial niche markets as well as to turn the family business to a vertically integrated firm. Furthermore, I enjoyed a lot being responsible for the CRM implementation and advancement of plans and strategies, retaining existing customers and gaining new ones, and carrying out tasks related to project management and internal audits as a safety and health engineer.

I adore walking with my family in the Great Wood area of the wonderful Stanmer Park. There are a lot of different routes that explore glorious woods spread around the park. After appreciating the fresh air and feeling the importance of nature we are having enjoyable moments into the heart of the pretty village of Stanmer with its church and tea rooms.

Apart from walks, I enjoy playing the piano which is actually a great motive for inviting my friends and singing together on Saturday nights.

Here's what it takes to get hired at top consulting firms right now

  • McKinsey seeks candidates with diverse majors and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Boston Consulting Group is expanding roles, emphasizing IT, UX design, and data engineering.
  • Ernst & Young is using AI in its hiring processes.

Insider Today

Consulting can be a lucrative career, but landing a job at a top firm isn't always easy.

McKinsey & Company is known for its selective interview process. It receives about 1 million résumés annually and plans to hire fewer than 1% of applicants this year, in line with last year, a spokesperson said.

Ernst & Young, meanwhile, received more than 4 million applications in the past year and hired some 140,000 people, said Irmgard Naudin ten Cate, EY's global talent attraction and acquisition Leader .

Business Insider checked in with four major firms — Boston Consulting Group, Ernst & Young, McKinsey, and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) — for insights into what they might be looking for in prospective employees.

What kinds of roles are consulting firms hiring for?

Consulting firms often hire for a range of positions .

Alicia Pittman, global people team chair at Boston Consulting Group, told BI the company is hiring for a wider array of roles than it did a decade ago. The company has a greater need for IT architects, UX designers, and data engineers, she said.

"The depth of breadth of expertise that we have has changed," she said, noting that the company now has climate scientists on staff.

Pittman said generative artificial intelligence is an area of "tremendous growth" for the firm. "It's going to change the mix of people and expertise that we need," she said.

The use of AI will even change how junior consultants do their jobs because it will often be possible to get answers more quickly.

"You learn the consulting tradecraft differently," Pittman said. "You learn how to interrogate data a little differently."

Ernst & Young is using AI to hire, Naudin ten Cate said. With a tool called EY Candidate Assistant, applicants who think they might be a good fit but don't know the right role can upload a résumé and list their interests. The tool then recommends open roles suitable for them using AI algorithms.

Rod Adams, talent acquisition and onboarding leader at PwC, told BI that the company is hiring consultants, engineers, accountants, and tax professionals, among other roles.

What kinds of candidates are most likely to get hired?

Consulting firms often say there isn't one specific background or set of skills they look for.

Related stories

McKinsey told BI that it looks for "distinctive students just starting their careers" who've majored in subjects such as computer science or art history. It also hires experts in industries ranging from technology to finance to law.

Regardless of their field, the firm wants all of its hires to have good problem-solving skills. One way the firm gauges that is through a game-based assessment called Solve. The results help the firm identify candidates who will succeed at McKinsey regardless of their business experience and are considered along with the rest of a candidate's application, interviews, and any other assessment results relevant to their role, the firm told BI.

PwC said some skills it looks for in job applicants are communication, problem-solving, and relationship building in a hybrid environment, while technical skills include accounting and auditing, tax strategy and reporting, and data engineering and visualization.

"We're also looking for candidates who are committed to continuing to build new skills throughout their career. People need to be able and willing to meet tomorrow's demands and take advantage of new opportunities," Adams said, noting PwC has a My AI initiative that trains its employees on generative AI.

If you're interested in consulting

McKinsey recently launched an interview prep site for new candidates that will include its best coaching and tips for prospective candidates.

"This helps to ensure candidates from any background — regardless of whether they have exposure to resources like consulting clubs — can demonstrate their distinctiveness in our process," the firm told BI.

Adams of PwC said college students and young grads should focus on upskilling and trying to get something new out of every class, project, and experience.

"My advice would be to take advantage of any and all learning and development opportunities, whether it be at school or at work," he said.

Watch: Marketing teams need both creative and technology talent — and not everyone should do both, says PwC's CMO

News from the Columbia Climate School

Blending Climate Action with Finance

Lylia Saurel

Emine Taha is a rising senior at Columbia, majoring in sustainable development with a concentration in economics. She is actively involved in the Columbia University Impact Investing Network ( CUIIN ) and the Advisory Committee on Socially Responsible Investing. Beyond her academic pursuits, Taha loves pottery and open-water swimming, and will be taking on the challenge of the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim for the first time this year.

In this Q&A, Taha shares insights into her decision to study sustainable development, how the program has shaped her understanding of sustainability and her experiences as a climate finance summer analyst at Molecule Ventures .

Woman smiling against forest backdrop

What drew you to the sustainable development major?

I am interested in combating climate change through financial tools, so the sustainable development major seemed like the natural middle ground for my interests. It provides a well-rounded scientific background while also allowing students to take classes in areas they are interested in. There are so many paths you can take with the program, which is what makes it so special. Originally, I was doing a special concentration and then switched to the major because there were many more topics I wanted to learn about. The Undergraduate Program in Sustainable Development also played a part in my decision to switch to the major because I felt very supported through the career and educational opportunities they shared.

How does the program shape your understanding of sustainability?

One of the key takeaways has been thinking about sustainability holistically. Decisions are not black and white. One thing that might be great for a certain sustainability goal could impact communities in a negative way. An eco-friendly product that reduces emissions may lead to increased consumption, which could defeat the purpose. Sustainability is a balance with multiple factors to consider, not just a simple two-sided scale. It requires a lot of thought and often involves difficult trade-offs.

Tell us about your recent internship.

This summer, I am a climate finance summer analyst at Molecule Ventures, a company based in New York that is driving decarbonization of key sectors through managing funds in compliance carbon markets. I have been researching supply–demand dynamics for certain markets, conducting policy reviews relating to cap-and-trade and overall climate policies, and evaluating the feasibility of decarbonization of key sectors. I found the internship on Handshake , and through interviewing with various team members, realized that it perfectly suited my interests in sustainability, finance and policy.

What skills from the sustainable development program are you using in your internship?

I took Economic and Financial Methods for Sustainable Development with Satyajit Bose , which allowed me to better understand the different ways climate and finance interact, and how finance can be a tool to push climate goals. I also took Michael Gerrard ’s Climate Change Law and Energy Law courses, which helped me contextualize and read climate policy and international treaties. These classes were also my first in-depth introduction to cap-and-trade markets, which helped me immensely during the interview process. Challenges of Sustainable Development and Principles of Economics (a class I think every sustainable development major can benefit from) also helped me find a direction in my earlier years in college.

How does the internship relate to your studies and what you plan to do post-graduation?

My internship is helping me build a thorough understanding of how climate, finance and policy are intertwined. Building decarbonization scenarios through research, I am also learning about how various key sectors are cutting emissions in different countries. Learning about these decarbonization technologies—their cost, popularity, how much emissions reductions they lead to—has been particularly enlightening on where global emissions might be heading.
