“ JETT”  is a beautiful 2015 Sunfish sailboats ready for sailing on the Finger Lakes or Lake Ontario waters. Please see below for contact, rental agreement, and payment options.

Steps to Rent:

• To determine delivery cost to your location type the desired delivery address in map window below. To find deliver cost, multiply the distance times $2.60 per mile cost to deliver. Miles to your location are shown as one-way miles. We charge $0.65 per mile driving  four complete trips at the one-way distance. So, one-way miles are multiplied by $2.60 to give the total driving distances made.
• Check calendar dates below for availability of the Sunfish sailboat rental. The calendars are updated as we are notified by renters. Note:  50% of the rental price will need to be submitted to reserve your rental date. The other 50% may be paid any time up to and including the day the Sunfish is delivered.

SHORELINE SAILBOATS RENTAL – TERMS and CONDITIONS In consideration of the following representations, covenants and agreements, Shoreline Sailboats, Owner, hereby rents to the Renter a Sunfish Sailboat: 1. Navigational Limitations: The Renter agrees to restrict the operation of the boat to the following described area: The waters of ______________________Lake. 2. Renter declares that he/she is experienced and qualified to handle the boat rented herein. 3. The Renter covenants and agrees that the boat will be operated in a safe and careful manner and with due diligence and shall be returned with equipment and boat in same condition as when taken, ordinary wear and tear excepted. 4. During the term of this agreement the Renter shall be in full control of the boat and it is expressly understood that the Renter is not the agent, servant or employee of the Owner, in any way whatsoever, and that the Owner is not responsible for injuries sustained by Renter, his guests and employees. 5. The boat shall be used exclusively as a pleasure vessel for the safe and proper use of the Renter, his family, guests and employees during the term of this agreement and shall not be used to transport merchandise, nor passengers for hire or for pay. 6. Owner herein assumes no responsibility for weather conditions which may arise or occur during the term of this agreement, and all rates and agreements will continue in full force and effect until the return of the boat to Owner. 7. The Renter further agrees: a) To notify the Owner immediately of any accident involving the boat.

 b) On demand, to reimburse the Owner for the cost of all damages to the boat and equipment resulting from accident, collision, theft or loss. c) To release the owner and/or boat from any claim for loss and/or injury of any nature whatsoever d) To indemnify and save the Owner and/or boat harmless from any claim for liability for loss and/or injury to any other boat, property or persons, including all occupants of the boat hereby rented, by reason of accident involving the said boat during this rental or as a result of the operation of the boat in violation of any law or ordinance. 8. This contract constitutes the entire agreement by and between the parties hereto and no oral or implied agreement or understanding shall cancel or vary the terms of this contract unless reduced to writing and signed by the parties hereto. 9. Both parties acknowledge that they have read the foregoing provisions all of which they are in complete understanding and agreement. 10. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited on all vessels. 11. Boat shall be returned by time agreed or an hourly charge of $75.00 for each additional hour or fraction thereof will be due. Frequently Asked Questions: Q: Do I have to be present when the boat is dropped off? A: No, as long as you have provided exact instructions to your drop off location and a signed rental agreement we will deliver the boat to your location.

Q: Do you have lifejackets? A: Two adult large lifejackets are included with the rental (seen in picture of SCOUT above)

Q: How old do my children need to be to sail alone. A: This is a bit unclear in New York State. Some information tends to point to an age of 14, but that is for motorized boats. We spoke with a local police officer who has operated a patrol boat on Conesus Lake. He stated that there is no age restriction to sail an unmotorized sailboat or row a dinghy or canoe, but children must wear a PFD. Parents are advised to watch their children at all times due to other traffic on the Finger Lakes. Have fun – be safe.

Q: Do you have a dolly to get the boat on the beach? A: Yes, we have dollies if needed. We are retailers for Dynamic Dollies and Racks

Q: How can I add more days to my rental? A: Email or call to see if your boat is available for the period you would like it. If the dates are available you can be charged by PayPal or credit card over the phone.

Q: Can I tie the Sunfish to the dock overnight? A: You are responsible for keeping the boat safe during times of non-use. Without adequate fenders to keep the boat from rubbing on the dock the Sunfish will invariably become scuffed and perhaps damaged.

Q: What if the boat becomes damaged while in use or while in my care? A: We provide a complete list of replacement parts and prices to allow you to assess the cost for the damage for which you are responsible.

Q: How do I know what wear has been made to the Sunfish before my rental term? A: We provide an itemized list of previous wear to the hull and other parts.

The Sunfish combines easy rigging and manageability for a comfortable and hassle-free sailing experience. This is the sailboat loved by all. Designed in 1952 as the ultimate beach craft, the Sunfish sailboat is still a favourite with all ages. This maintenance free boat holds its resale value thanks to its robust construction, highlighted by hard chines and a flat underbody. The Sunfish can be stored almost anywhere and is a snap to car-top, making it a popular international class and easy to transport to your favourite beach for family fun.

The Sunfish has its roots planted firmly in 1947 in Waterbury, Connecticut. Friends Alexander “Al” Bryan and Cortlandt “Cort” Heyniger (the Al and Cort in Alcort) pondered, “How to put a sail on a surfboard?” The answer involved a rejected design for American Red Cross waterfront rescue surfboards, leading to the Sailfish – a lateen rigged, flat-decked, plywood marvel. In 1951, Bryan’s pregnant wife found its flat deck somewhat uncomfortable. The addition of a cockpit and widening of the hull created the Sunfish. The logo was created by Heyniger, who traced a nickel and added fins, the tail and an eye. Early wood Sailfish and Sunfish were available assembled or as kits. In 1959 the introduction of fiberglass and the low cost and ease of production led to the proliferation of Sunfish everywhere. Other improvements included aluminium spars replacing spruce, Dacron sails replacing cotton, ash replacing mahogany for tillers, resulting in increased speed, performance and reliability. Sunfish racing started almost as quickly as two or three boats came together – the first North American Championship was 1963, the first Midwinters was 1965.

The Sunfish sailboats I restore are not  painted. I hand wet sand the original gelcoat to bring back the gloss finish through a multi step process. The hulls are weighed and force dried with hot air if needed. Upgrades include access ports added for inspection to vital areas of the hull. All hulls are stripped  of all hardware and refitte

While I still enjoy being outside during the warmer months to do my initial washing and prep work, I still keep the heavy sanding  work inside in my containment wash booth. Also recycling these sailboats in many cases keeps them out of the landfills and on the water for many more years to come.

I sold my last sailboat in July, 2023. I will still give occasional lessons for individuals who own their own small powerboat or sailboat.

Have a new Keelboat or Powerboat? I give small keelboat and small motorboat lessons on your boat, covering such topics as docking, backing up, pivot turns, and more as I share local knowledge of our waterways...

Bimini Bay is a beautiful, sheltered body of water nestled inside Anna Maria Island. It is the perfect, safe place to learn to sail -- and we often see dolphins! Bimini Bay Sailing is just minutes from Holmes Beach, Longboat Key, and Bradenton, snuggled between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. During the last part of your saling lesson we usually sail just off the shore of Anna Maria Island into Tampa Bay, with a clear view of the Sunshine Skyway, Egmont Key and the Anna Maria Pier.

Take Sailing Lessons on the very stable WindRider 17 Trimaran, with a quiet electric motor for uncertain breezes. Or at your location on your own small dinghy sailboat or keelboat. I also offer powerboat docking lessons on your own boat.

Learn how to use a mainsheet, jib sheets, and a furling line. learn how to tack, jibe, and how to rig a sailboat. learn your basic points of sail. students usually sail at least half of the time on their own..

If you already know how to sail and you want to rent a Trimaran, for your safety and pleasure, I will still do a skills and safety review. Then I'll go out with you as your coach/guide, on the same sailboat, but you will do almost all of the sailing. This is to make your experience as safe and pleasant as possible.

And once again this past June 2022, fourteen young sailors had the opportunity to safely experience the excitement of their first exposure to sailing during our mini sailing camps at Bimini Bay.

Lake Champlain Sailing

Sailing on Lake Champlain is an amazing way to get out on the water. Basin Harbor has two options for sailboat rentals: choose from a two-person Sunfish and a six-person Cape Dory daysailer. You can sail on your own, or bring an instructor out with you for a lesson. Please note: The winds at Basin Harbor can be pretty strong, so be sure to consult with our waterfront staff and Harbormaster about your skill level before heading out.

Calema offers Windsurfing gear for beginner to advanced sailors.  We feature Fanatick, Goya and KONA boards, from longboards to widestyle to short boards. Sails from Simmer, Goya and Aerotech range from 1.5 (for kids) up to 10.0. We will rig up your equipment for you right on the shoreline and you can change your equipment as the weather changes for no additional fee. *All renters must have at least basic skills to rent. Lessons are available for those with less than basic skills (by appointment).

Kayaks & Paddleboards & NOW Canoes

Kayaks and Stand-Up Paddleboards can be rented and taken on a “self-guided” excursion for a 1hr/3hr or Full Day rental. We have single and tandem kayaks available as well as Stand-up paddleboards & Canoes for all sizes and skill levels. A brief introduction is given on how to launch, land and paddle as well as some review of wind and places to paddle. You can explore at your own pace along the Banana River. Start at any time of the day and go for as long as you’d like between opening and closing hours of operation.  Single Kayaks and SUP’s are for 1 person // Tandem kayaks are for 2 adults and can fit a small child in the middle // Our 17′ Canoes can fit up to a family of 4. Our Single Kayaks are ‘sit-inside’ kayaks. They are stable and user friendly for all skill levels and sizes – children 10yrs to adults up to 325lbs. Calema’s tandem kayaks are ‘sit on top’. They can accommodate up to 2 adults with a 3rd small child in the middle. They are stable and self draining. They can hold up to 485lbs. total weight. Calema is now offering Canoes for a family outing.  Our 17′ Alumacraft Canoes can hold up to a family of 4.  All rentals include life jackets (for all participants) and paddles (2/boat).  Choose from 1hr / 3hrs / Full Day.

Calema offers monohull sailboats for rental and a multihull with a Captain on board. With boats right on the shore of the Banana River, launching is easy and the Banana River offers a large open area to explore and enjoy the breezes that blow year round. To rent a sailboat at Calema – you must be able to demonstrate skills appropriate to the type of sailing craft.  This will be done at the beginning of your rental.  If you are not able to show basic, safe, skills, the rental will be stopped and no refund given. Once an initial checkout is passed, no other checkouts on future rentals for that type of boat are required.

All Rental rates are per BOAT, not per person. Any rented boat must have the skilled sailor (who had the checkout) aboard at all times. For the Stiletto – “Taste of Sailing”, the rate is for the first 2 persons – additional persons can be added for a fee.

Sailboat rentals are available for 3hrs or Full day. Late returns will be charged a late fee. Renters will be charged for damage to equipment. Sales tax of 7% is charged on all rentals.

Sunfish/Force 5

3 Hours: $80

Our Sunfish/Force 5 hulls are rigged with a very user friendly single sail system. They are ideal boats for more recreational sailors and can accommodate up to 2 adults (max 300lbs). Choose from 3hrs or a Full day on the water. Learn more

23' Stiletto Catamaran

2 Hrs/2 People/$275

Our Stiletto is a 23′ Catamaran.  It is not rented, but can be taken out with a captain (Tinho) on board.  You can choose to just relax and enjoy the ride, or be ‘hands on’ – your choice.  The rate is for the 1st 2 people.  You can add a 3rd or 4th person at an additional charge.  Depending on the size of the people (or if children) a 5th person can be added.  Learn more

Rental Policies

For KAYAKS & SUP rentals – no prior experience is required.  For WINDSURFING & SAILING – renters must have previous instruction and be able to demonstrate basic skills.  If a renter has less than, in the sole discretion of Calema staff, the ability to safely sail, the rental will be stopped without refund.

CANCELLATIONS – Can be made up to 24hrs in advance with full refund for rentals.  Cancellations made by Calema or due to weather conditions – are changeable or refundable.  Cancellations less than 24hrs and no -shows are non-refundable.

Hobie Getaway

Our most popular rental, these 17′ catamarans have a boom-less main, a roller furling jib, wing seats and a forward trampoline for comfort. The Getaway offers fun and fast sailing for crews of 2-4 adults!

The Hobie Wave , our 14 foot catamaran, is simple and fun to sail! It sports a single sail with no boom and crews 1-3 people. Easy to sail and super fun, this is the best option if you’re used to Sunfish and other small dinghies.

Flying Scot

The Flying Scot 19′ day sailor, sloop rigged with a jib and main, comfortably handles a crew of 2-6 adults. These boats have been a mainstay in our rental and instructional fleet since we first opened in 1979! Come sail the Nor’Banks Classic!

Sailing Instruction

Our private sailing lessons are for anyone interested in experiencing sailing! Great for families or for students looking to refresh their skills, learn/practice a new skill, try out a new boat and for just about any other reason they would like to learn more about sailing. Up to 3 participants on a Getaway. Up to 5 on a Flying Scot.

Our new Topcat K2X is a high performance catamaran for advanced sailors. The German built K2X has a similar rig to the Getaway with wings and a boom-less main and the addition of light and sleek hulls, and extra sail area for an exciting cruise. Recent sailing experience required. Main and jib. Crews 2-4.

The Getaway is best for experienced sailors who want an exciting sail. It’s super fun to sit out on the wings, but that does make it a more acrobatic sail, as you have to crawl across the trampoline, under the sail and up onto the opposite wing when coming about. Up to three people can take this for a lesson.

The Flying Scot has remained basically unchanged since it was first built in 1957. With bench seating built into the deck, it’s a little more comfortable and a less acrobatic sail than the Getaway. Even if you have limited experience, when the conditions are light the Wave is your best option. Up to five can take this for a lesson.

In higher winds, the Wave is an energetic sail for experienced sailors and a blast to fly a hull.

We don’t have strict boundaries, but rather some geographical and common sense limitations based on the conditions. We always sail within line of site due to the rapidly changing weather, and so that we can see and assist you if you have an issue.

We ask that you stay up wind and south of the islands to the North to avoid the shallow water. We recommend that you avoid sailing in the WaveRunner Area for an extended period of time.

No Sunfish, but you’ll like the Hobie Wave even better! It has a single sail and no clunky low boom to smack your head on.

Yes! You may use your own life vest as long as it is Coast Guard approved. Please see our staff in the office for life vest approval before heading out on the water.

We do require you to have some prior sailing experience in order to take out a boat on your own. If you don’t, then consider taking a sailing lesson with one of our awesome instructors.

This is different for everyone, but if you define “learning to sail” as acting as skipper of your own small boat, we recommend at least three two hour lessons. If you have not sailed before, we strongly recommend making your first lesson two hours instead of one. We will offer a discounted rate for multiple days of instruction.

15-20% is customary and much appreciated.

Up to around 15 MPH we are good to go! When the wind starts to gust higher than 15 MPH we restrict sailing to those with recent (within the past year) experience. Do not hesitate to give us a call to check on wind conditions in our area.

We cannot operate when the wind is sustained over 20.

We have strict weather parameters to ensure that we can rent safely. While certain conditions may be feasible for an experienced individual on their own vessel, we have to be more proactive when it comes to limiting our rental activity. We cease rentals when the wind is sustained over 20mph and we do not rent with storm cells in the area or a high likelihood of inclement weather. Other conditions such as wind direction and wave height may also play into our decision.

Absolutely, just remember that there is often a chance of capsize. In some conditions (and based on your experience) it may be important that your child is comfortable in the water and will not panic.

We want to make sure we’re setting your kids up for sailing success and those early sailing memories are important! We’ll be honest with you if we don’t think it will be a good idea.

The Getaway does not sail well without the jib. There are other ways to spill wind and depower using the traveler, but if you’re not comfortable sailing with a jib, you’re not going to be able to effectively sail the Getaway.

Strictly speaking, no they’re not. We are more than happy to facilitate in whatever way we can as long as we deem it safe to do so. Feel free to discuss specifics with a manager.

Typically we discourage it and recommend a Wave, but if someone has considerable experience and the wind is on the lighter side (sustained at 13mph or less) we can allow it.

While we don’t have trapeze rigs and harnesses available for our catamarans, our Getaways all have wings. Wings are outrigger seats that make it fun and easy to get out over the water.

It has emerged that the  four gunmen charged  in the murder of at least 139 concert-goers at Moscow's Crocus City Hall theatre  were all citizens  of the small post-Soviet nation of Tajikistan in Central Asia.

Does their nationality have anything to do with their alleged terrorism? Many Russians probably think so.

Tajikistan, a landlocked country of 10 million sandwiched between Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and China, is the  most impoverished  of the former Soviet republics. Known for its corruption and political repression, it has chafed under the  iron-fisted rule  of President Emomali Rahmon since 1994.

There are estimated to be well over  3 million Tajiks  living in Russia, about one-third of the total Tajik population. Most of them hold the precarious status of " guest workers ," holding low-paying jobs in construction, produce markets or even cleaning public toilets.

While Russia's  declining population  has led to increasing reliance on foreign workers to fill such needs within its labour force, the attitude of Russians towards natives of Central Asia and  the Caucasus region  is generally negative.

It's similar to the American stereotype about Mexicans so infamously expressed by  Donald Trump  in 2015: "They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists."

Non-Slavs are systematically  discriminated against  in Russia, and since 2022 they have been  disproportionately conscripted  and sent to Ukraine to serve as cannon fodder at the front.

Tajik exclusion

As I have described in a  recent book , few nations in history have seen their standing so dramatically reduced as the Tajiks have over the past 100 years.

For more than a millennium, the  Tajiks — Persian-speaking descendants of the ancient Sogdians who dominated the Silk Road  — were Central Asia's cultural elite.

Beginning with what's known as the  New Persian Renaissance of the 10th century  when their capital, Bukhara, came to rival Baghdad as a centre of Islamic learning and high culture, Tajiks were the principal scholars and bureaucrats of Central Asia's major cities right up to the time of the Russian Revolution.

The famous medieval polymath Avicenna was an ethnic Tajik, as were the hadith collector Bukhari, the Sufi poet Rumi, and many others.

But as the most significant purveyors of Central Asia's Islamic civilization, Tajiks were seen by the Bolsheviks as representing an obsolete legacy that socialism aimed to overcome.

The Tajiks were virtually excluded from the massive social and political restructuring imposed on Central Asia during the early years of the Soviet Union, with most of their historical territory, including the  fabled cities of Samarkand and Bukhara , being awarded to the Turkic-speaking Uzbeks who were seen as being more malleable.

Only as late as  1929 were the Tajiks given their own republic , consisting mostly of marginal, mountainous territory and deprived of any major urban centres.

An impoverished region

Throughout the 20th century, the  Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic was the most impoverished and underdeveloped  region of the former Soviet Union, and it has retained that  unfortunate status  since independence in 1991.

From 1992-1997, the country was plunged into a devastating civil war that destroyed what infrastructure remained from the Soviet period. Since that time, Rahmon has used the threat of  renewed civil conflict  to vindicate his absolute rule.

The spectre of  radical Islam  emanating from neighbouring Afghanistan —  where the Tajik population considerably outnumbers that of Tajikistan  — has provided additional justification for Rahmon's repressive policies.

In today's Tajikistan even those with a university education find it almost  impossible to earn a salary  that would enable them to build a normal family life.

Disempowered and humiliated by the system, they are easy prey for radical Islamic preachers who give them a sense of value and purpose.

The added backdrop of financial desperation makes for an explosive cocktail: one of the suspects in the recent Moscow attacks reportedly told his Russian interrogators that he  was promised a cash reward of half a million Russian rubles (about US$5,300) to carry out his alleged atrocities. .

Terrorism as desperation?

Normal, sane human beings everywhere are horrified by terrorist acts regardless of how they are justified by their perpetrators, and the long-suffering people of Tajikistan are no exception.

But unfortunately, the conditions under which a small number of extremists can perceive the psychopathic murder of innocent civilians for cash or ideology as an attractive option show no signs of abating.

Russia's laughable attempt to somehow link the Moscow attacks  to Ukraine  is a clumsy diversion from the consequences of its relations with Central Asia.
