Founded in 1886, The Shelter Island Yacht Club is among the dozen oldest yacht clubs in the United States. Located in Dering Harboron at the far eastern end of Long Island, New York, on Shelter Island, the club boasts a vibrant and active junior sailing program as well as one of the largest Herreshoff H12-½ and Etchells fleets in the country.

The HMCo. assigned sequential hull numbers to most boats that it built, and the first 12 1/2 hull number was 744. Numbers referenced in this article refer to sail numbers unless noted as hull numbers.
On any Saturday in summer at the Shelter Island Yacht Club (SIYC) in Shelter Island, New York, you can see over twenty Herreshoff 12s set off for a day of racing. Sailors begin gathering around 12:30pm, catching up and discussing the day’s conditions before heading into the harbor where more than 50 H12s are moored. After rigging up, the boats sail past SIYC members having lunch on the deck out to the racecourse for a 2pm start. Races may be conventional buoy courses sailed across the ferry channel in Pipes Cove, or what is locally known as a Channel Race with longer legs using government marks for a test of wind, tide and local shoreline knowledge. Regardless of the course, the final race heads back to SIYC for a finish off the club pier and racers gather at the club to toast and recap the day’s sailing.

The Fiske family were the first owners of an H12 on Shelter Island. Peggy was one of the first 20 boats built at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, Rhode Island, and sold for $420 in 1914. After being sailed by the family for many years on Cape Cod and being renamed Little Kittie , the boat was sold a few times but was brought back into the family and to Shelter Island by Andrew Fiske in 1952. Andrew was the 12th Lord of Sylvestor Manor, which was originally a provisioning plantation established in 1651 for the Barbadian sugar trade and is now operated as an Educational Farm. He owned several wooden boats, including Little Kittie (hull 746, sail #14) which is named for his sister. Andrew Fiske is remembered by current SIYC fleet members for racing in a jacket and tie with his wife Alice who wore a bonnet and gloves. Little Kittie is now owned and maintained by the Sylvestor Manor Educational Farm and can be seen out on Shelter Island Sound being sailed by farm employees or volunteers.

The fleet began its racing history when Sam Hird sailed his boat Poppy (#88) from Old Lyme, Connecticut across the Long Island Sound to Shelter Island in June of 1974. Hird became the first H12 Fleet Captain and within a few years there were ten wood and fiberglass boats racing at SIYC. Early racers included Hird, Walter Brigham, Steve Corkery, Andrew Fiske, Dan Reich (former Fleet Captain), and Wallace Tiernan. Toots Clark sailed Little Kittie when Andrew Fiske retired from racing. Clark recruited Bruce Brewer, the current SIYC Commodore, as his crew and thus began the Brewer family interest in the H12. Bruce has been Fleet Captain and with his wife Susan sails Spray (#816) every week and are former club champions. Chuck and Carol Tiernan began racing together in 1981 and continue to sail together in their boat Kona (#205), originally owned by Wallace Tiernan and one of the first ten boats in the early days of the fleet.
Toots’ son Dennis Clark was recently Fleet Captain and races with his wife Ellen. Their first boat, Thistle (#101), was wood and they now race Lulu Belle (#256) in which they have been fleet champions. The Clark family tradition of competitive racing has continued with Dennis & Ellen’s daughter Amanda, who first sailed in Thistle and went on to become a two-time U.S. Olympian as skipper in the Women’s 470 Class. This past summer, Amanda frequently led the Race Committee for the club’s Saturday races and continued the family tradition by sailing with her young daughter, Margaret, in the H12 Ladies’ Races.
Shelter Island has a rich history of wooden boats – one reason there were so many competitive wooden H12s was the skill of Walter Brigham, island builder and craftsman. Brigham was a competitive sailor whose intimate knowledge of local waters made him a legend when he raced. Diana Lawrence, current owner of Blackjack (#272), recalled that Brigham carved a repair for her boat from an oak stump found at the town dump. Richard Smith’s wood boat arrived on the island in need of much repair work. Brigham inspected the boat, poking the hull with his penknife, and then agreed to take Smith on as his assistant. The two worked on the boat for two years before launching the boat, named Kindling , and there have been no problems since.

The SIYC fleet also has a fiberglass boat with historical significance. In 1973, Bill Harding designed a fiberglass reproduction of the H12 called the Doughdish. The design of the molds used three original wood hulls for guidance. Harding’s goal was to create a boat with similar sailing performance to the original wood boats so they could race together competitively. Harry and Peg Diorio own and race #71, Harding’s own boat, one of the first fiberglass boats made by builder Edey & Duff.
While some of the boats in the SIYC fleet have historical significance, one has a movie credit to its name. Mary Walker purchased her boat, Queen Mary (#164), from longtime racer Wally Carrucci. Though not recognizable with its current blue hull, the boat was featured in the movie Jaws in its original red hull.
During the summer of 2020, H12 sailing at SIYC was a particular respite from the pandemic – the club saw more participation than ever in events offered for the H12 fleet. Saturday races ran from June through the Halloween Howl on October 17. Participation peaked on Saturday August 22 with 28 H12s on the line. The club also ran Ladies Races where mother-daughter teams and friends enjoyed monthly races. Dona Bergin, coordinator of the events, reports that 10-15 boats participated in each of the Ladies events. Dona has been sailing almost every day during the past year and even enjoyed a day of sailing this winter in the snow.
The SIYC H12 fleet is represented by all ages and is welcoming to all sailors interested in sailing the lovely 12 ½-footer (LWL) designed by Nathanael G. Herreshoff. This past summer sailors ranged in age from 5 to 85. The oldest sailor, George Bradley, 85, purchased his boat Delight (#446) in 2015 and races all summer. The youngest sailors Anders, age 11, and his sister Wells, age 5, race with their father Jake Siewert in Simba (#200). When they fly the spinnaker, Anders takes the tiller while Jake manages the sails.

More than 100 years after Herreshoff designed the H12 as a boat for children to learn to sail, the Shelter Island Yacht Club fleet continues to demonstrate that the boat remains a great design for those who want to enjoy the water.

Place is absolutely gorgeous!! In love with Shelter Islamd they only trouble is you need to take a ferry or private boat here.. Other then that its amazing!!
Before departing for Shelter Island, we referenced our copy of the 2017 Register of American Yacht Clubs Reciprocity Guide, confirming that both our club and the Shelter Island Yacht Club were listed and that SIYC offered reciprocity. Upon arriving at SIYC, we inquired with the staff at the desk, one of whom we believe was the manager. This 'gentleman' representing SIYC proceeded to lie - yes... *lie* - to us, stating that our club was not listed in the book, and that we could not be granted access to his club. My husband sits on our yacht club's board of directors. He was puzzled as to how this situation could arise since he personally wrote the 2017 membership check to the Yachting Club of America. He was sure that our club was listed in the membership guide. When we returned from our trip, we again verified that Shelter Island Yacht Club indeed was listed as a reciprocal club, along with our club, in the 2017 Register. It is outrageous that our yacht club paid a $500 membership fee so that its members could enjoy reciprocal privileges, yet my husband and I were blatantly lied to and turned away. We are a couple in our 50s, highly educated, polite, and well-dressed. The manager's actions were unwarranted. We quietly walked away from SIYC, disappointed and offended by the deplorable behavior of its management and representatives.
We have sailed here for decades. Reciprocal privileges. Great showers , ice, and launch. I love this YC. Bring a collared shirt! Stand for Colors! Dog friendly. They have a nice menu. Spectacular views of the mooring field with its Herrshoff 12.5 fleet . Close to wonderful restaurants within walking distance. A Hardware store has marine supplies and a little of everything else. Ice cream, a small market and a toy store will entertain kids. Fuel, bike rentals nearby. Walk to the island ferry and head over to Greenport too. Great staff.

Six Metre 2023 World Championship set for RYS, Cowes
Royal Yacht Squadron prepares to host International Six Metre 2023 World Championship.
Preparations are in full swing to welcome 34 teams representing 11 Nations from across Europe and North America for the International Six Metre World Championship, to be hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron from 29 August to 8 September.
The fleet is divided into two divisions, the Open Division and the Classic Division for those yachts built prior to 31 December 1965.
Boats have been arriving in Cowes over recent weeks to train on the Solent, and registration for the regatta begin on Tuesday 29 August.
The official practice races will be held from on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 September and then on Sunday 3 September the class will hold its AGM and a Race Officer’s briefing.
World Championship racing will commence on Monday 4 September with up to eight races scheduled between then and the regatta’s conclusion on Friday 8 September.
Amongst those competing will be the defending Open and Classic Division Champions, Momo and Dix Août.
In the Open Division Dieter Schoen’s Momo, a Judel/Vrolijk design launched in 2022, will be aiming for a second consecutive win.
But she will have tough competition from the likes of Jan Eckert’s Gingko Too, a 2020 Javier Cela design; Violeta Alvarez’ 2017 Juan Kouyoumdjian designed Stella; and new kid on the block Oiva, designed by Allan Savolainen, launched in 2022 and owned by Finland’s Henrik Andersin.
The Open Division may be nicknamed the “Moderns”, but even here the boats will span some forty years. Built in 1981 the Petterson/Howlett designed Junior may be the oldest boat in the Open Division but she’s arguably the most successful post-1965 boat having won the Worlds in 1999, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2019 and the Europeans in 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002.
In the classic division Dix Août, a 1950 Bjarne Aas design owned by Louis Heckly, will defend her title, but this time with the legendary French offshore and Dragon sailor Géry Trenteseaux at the helm.
Meanwhile Louis, who is also the President of the International Six Metre Class, will be racing the stunningly beautiful 1937 Olin Stephens designed Fun. The two boats have been training hard all season and will both be hoping to put in a good showing.
The oldest boat racing in the Classic Division will be the 1927 Johan Anker designed Sioma owned by Fenton Burgin, closely followed by Tom Owen and Dirk Stolp’s 1930 Alfred Mylne designed Valdai and Simon J. William’s 1931 Anker & Jensen designed Abu.
The youngest Classic racing will be Thomas Kuhmann’s 1955 Hanko III designed by Bjarne Aas, although Nirvana, which is a reconstruction of a 1939 Olin Stephens design, is technically the most recently built of the Classics at this event.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE PROTOCOL AND CLASS RULE OF THE 37TH AMERICA’S CUP
The Protocol of the 37th America’s Cup was released today by the Defender, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Emirates Team New Zealand and the Challenger of Record - Royal Yacht Squadron Ltd and their representative team INEOS Britannia, eight months to the day after Emirates Team New Zealand successfully defended the America’s Cup.
The Protocol sets the foundations and rules of participation for all teams in the 37th America’s Cup and records the items of mutual consent under the America’s Cup Deed of Gift agreed between the Defender and the Challenger of Record which establishes the basis for a multi challenger event.
Defender Emirates Team New Zealand’s CEO Grant Dalton said: “As we saw with AC36, after 170 years, as the oldest trophy in international sport, the America’s Cup maintains its unique position of balancing the traditions of the Deed of Gift while continuing to push the boundaries of innovation, technology and design in the boats, the event, the broadcast and the commercial aspects of the event.
Maintaining this balance is the ongoing challenge and responsibility of the Defender and Challenger of Record as we aim to progress into the 37th edition of the America’s Cup in the ever-changing environment and demands of global sports as well as a determination to drive sustainability through innovation via hydrogen technology for the marine sector which we both believe is reflected in this Protocol.”
INEOS Britannia CEO and Team Principal Sir Ben Ainslie said: “As Challenger of Record, INEOS Britannia has sought with the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, to make the next America’s Cup less expensive and more inclusive. The Protocol this time around will see reduced team operating costs without compromising any of the technical development which the Cup is so famous for. There is an opportunity for change, so for AC37 we will see the first Women’s America’s Cup Regatta and we also welcome back the Youth America’s Cup.”
An updated ‘Version 2’ of the AC75 Class Rule has been released from the last America’s Cup which specifies the latest requirements to be compliant with the class rule including modification requirements for new teams buying ‘Version 1 AC75’s’ that were built and used by teams competing in AC36.
Cost reduction has been a key consideration as part of the balance in the development of the AC37 Protocol including:
• Teams are only permitted to build one new AC75. • Limitations on the quantity of foils and componentry that can be built for the AC75’s. • Introduction of the multipurpose One Design AC40 class which teams will be able to convert and use for testing, component development and Match Race training. • AC40 class will then be converted back to the measured One Design AC40 class for use in the exciting new America’s Cup Women’s Regatta and America’s Cup Youth events. These events have been developed to create new accelerated inclusive pathways into the America’s Cup for the growing global talent pool of female and youth sailors. • Race crew onboard the AC75 reduced from 11 to 8 sailors. • Further One design elements. • Shared team recon. • Supplied starting software. • The AC75 class of boat will be maintained for the next two events.
The shared recon programme whilst reducing costs, is also aimed to give America’s Cup fans the inside track on the testing and development on the water by all the teams. The observations will be made public via AC media channels so that fans can stay up to date with the latest developments as they emerge from the sheds throughout the whole of AC37.
With a view to opening the doors and the continued drive to increase the global audience of the America’s Cup and the sport of sailing, a condition of entry to competitors is they agree to be part of a potential behind-the-scenes documentary series. The intention of this is to bring the secrecy, the drama and all the teams’ personalities into the limelight.
There will be up to three Preliminary Regattas, the first two raced in AC40s, the last one at the Match venue in AC75s. The Challenger Selection Series and the America’s Cup Match will be held in 2024, with the Match Venue and approximate event dates to be announced by 31st March 2022.
The Protocol outlines restrictions on when the AC75’s can be sailed. With the anticipated benefit angled towards new Challengers to AC37, existing teams are not permitted to sail their AC75s’ before the 17th September 2022, however new Challengers entering AC37 that have purchased a second hand “Version 1 AC75” are permitted to sail their AC75 for 20 days from 17th June 2022. There are other restricted sailing periods which are provisional and will be confirmed once the Match venue is announced.
The Crew Nationality Rule will require 100% of the race crew for each competitor to either be a passport holder of the country of the team’s yacht club as of 17th March 2021 or to have been physically present in that country (or, acting on behalf of such yacht club in Auckland, the venue of the AC36 Events) for 18 months of the previous three years prior to 17th March 2021. As an exception to this requirement, there will be a discretionary provision allowing a quota of non-nationals on the race crew for competitors from ‘Emerging Nations.’
As part of the ongoing drive for innovation and new clean technology in the America’s Cup, it is now a mandated obligation of all teams to build and operate two hydrogen powered foiling chase boats for their campaign (subject to proof of concept). It’s hoped showcasing proven hydrogen technology in the marine sector will help create a game-changing pathway for the wider industry and lead to a significant reduction in its carbon footprint. These boats must be a minimum of 10 metres long and the usage and performance criteria is set out in the Protocol.
“A significant proportion of the team’s carbon footprints is in their on-water operations, through their long days of testing, development and training,” said Grant Dalton.
“So for the past year we have been researching, designing and are now building a prototype hydrogen-powered foiling chase boat which will have a dramatic effect on the reduction of the team’s carbon footprints, as well as pushing the development of hydrogen in the marine sector.”
Race Management will be entirely independent of the event organisation and will be led by the Regatta Director. The umpires and jury that will manage all on the water rules and disputes for all events.
• The independent Rules and Measurement Committees will be responsible for interpretation of the AC75 Class Rule and the yacht measurement.
• A three-person Arbitration Panel will oversee and deal with all Protocol disputes with published decisions to maintain the integrity of the event. And there will be a new fast-track process to reduce the potential delays in making decisions on disputed items.
AARON YOUNG: Commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron
“ A lot of work has gone into the AC37 Protocol and we extend our thanks and gratitude to Emirates Team New Zealand and the Challenger of Record - the Royal Yacht Squadron and INEOS Britannia - for their hard work and commitment to an exciting 37th America’s Cup.
Clearly the 36th America’s Cup was hugely successful despite the difficulties and huge restrictions due to dealing with the Covid 19 pandemic in New Zealand and globally. But as custodians of the America’s Cup along with Emirates Team New Zealand, it is our responsibility to keep building the event for the good of the America’s Cup, and the sport.
We especially welcome the inclusion of both the Youth and Women’s America’s Cup as part of the protocol and event, and believe these are important developments that will increase participation and inclusion within the America’s Cup going forward. We are also pleased to keep pushing the boundaries of innovation, technology, sustainability, participation, broadcast and the commercial aspects of the event. And so we think we have taken a good step forward in that respect.
The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron will continue to support Team New Zealand as they fulfil their role in the planning, funding and delivery of this AC37 campaign and event.“
ROBERT M. BICKET: Chairman of Royal Yacht Squadron Ltd
“We are delighted with the result of this positive collaboration between the Defender and the Challenger of Record which has resulted in a truly progressive protocol for the 37th America’s Cup designed to promote fair competition and sustainability. Furthermore, we believe that the cost reduction measures and introduction of a women’s and youth event provide new and exciting opportunities within our sport.“

Inside the Castle
The interior of the Castle is a cross between a grand country house and a maritime museum. I wish I could have stayed for days to study the paintings of Fleet Reviews throughout history, pore over the leather-bound tomes in the library and sit with a gin and tonic taking in the glorious views across the Solent.
Instead I caught glimpses of treasures and trophies taken down from the walls for the refurbishment and got a feel for the magnificent proportions of the ancient rooms, the splendour of the Platform, with its battery of brass cannon, imagining the Scottish reels danced there a few days before – this vast room hosts parties and dinners for up to 120.
The magnificemt Dining Room where members can host their own dinner parties
In pride of place is the enormous wheel from the yacht Victoria and Albert II , and over an arched doorway I spied the tiller from the royal racing yacht Bloodhound whose mast was once the Castle’s flagstaff – it was taken down for checking in 2014 and found to be past economic repair.
Members and their guests staying in the Castle in one of the 13 bedrooms, charmingly decorated in traditional style with chintz curtains and antique furniture, are treated to service every bit as good as in a five-star hotel. The commodore’s room is on the top floor. Both he and the vice-commodore have their own accommodation with ensuites.
The staff of stewards, waiters and waitresses is being augmented for the summer of 2015. They expect to be fully stretched serving drinks receptions and members’ dinners.
“And we’ll still provide normal service for members who like to come in to sit in the Morning Room or on the balcony in need of a whisky or a Martini and lemonade,” house manager Katie Waite told me. The Morning Room is Waite’s favourite part of the Castle. “It’s the most beautiful of them all,” she said.
Bells to summon the staff
Stewards, dressed in three-piece suits, offer a butler service and are at members’ beck and call 24 hours a day. Their ethos is to be “attentive, but not intrusive,” one steward told me.
One benefit of membership is the ability to book a room for a dinner, a party or wedding, entertaining your guests to superb food and drink. You can even book the entire Castle, effectively having your own country home for a day or two. If more than one member wants a room on the same date the complex hierarchy of membership comes into play and it goes to the senior member.
In the cavernous, old-fashioned basement kitchen, reminding me of a scene from Upstairs Downstairs , scores of jars of freshly made marmalade were cooling.
“All the food is made here fresh, from scratch, by the chefs,” the steward told me, “from bread, to jams and chutneys. We serve locally sourced meat and a lot of game in season.” They still do silver service if members request it, but most dishes are now in the new style, plated up artistically.
Wine cellar
Crouching slightly, we made our way into the wine cellars. In the first room for ‘high volume wines’, I noticed cases and cases of Sauternes ordered in for the bicentenary. The wines are chosen by the Squadron’s Wine Committee, some ready to drink, others bought en primeur to be kept until ready for drinking. The all-important port cellar is further down, in the deepest, coldest part of the building. Back up in the pantry, staff were polishing silver cutlery, which will no doubt be a Sisyphean task during the summer.
The Squadron boasts an excellent wine cellar
Is the club concerned that its traditional image may not appeal to potential younger members? I asked the commodore. He replied that the Squadron runs a racing programme every April for youngsters aged between 16 and 20 in J/109s and there’s a busy J/70 team-racing schedule for around 80 Squadron Sailing Associates up to the age of 35.
Commodore Sharples is himself a keen sailor. “I started sailing on a SCOD with my father, and then on an Excalibur 36,” he told me. “We did plenty of RORC racing and Cowes Week every year.” Aged 24, he took a sabbatical and set sail as skipper with three friends and his brother for Cape Town in a Gallant 53 in order to do the 1973 Cape to Rio Race. Since then he’s competed in more than 40 Cowes Weeks, Fastnets, Newport-Bermudas and Swan Worlds.
He said it was “a great privilege” to be commodore in the Squadron’s bicentenary year: “We have been planning for nearly two years so we are hopeful our events will be well-run and a great success, and everybody will have a good time.”
Behind the America’s Cup
Sharples will still be commodore in 2017, America’s Cup year, and says it’s “serendipity” for him that the competition will be in Bermuda. He has long-standing associations with the island, even keeping a J/80 there for racing, and visits as often as he can.
Obviously enthusiastic about the Squadron’s America’s Cup chances, he told me: “Our challenge, through our affiliated club – Royal Yacht Squadron Racing Ltd – with Ben Ainslie Racing as our team, is a tremendous opportunity for us to play our part in bringing the Cup back to Britain . . . We believe our member Sir Ben Ainslie has the best chance for a long time of winning the Cup. Our role, and mine as commodore, is to give Sir Ben all the support that we can.”
One of the cannon on the Platform
So the Squadron remains an enigma: a private members’ club still functioning with centuries-old traditions, yet a public-facing, dynamic organisation in the forefront of world racing. It has a reputation for being a bastion of high society, yet the members I know are not titled – one a surgeon, another in the arts.
July 2015 looks set to be a great celebration of this and all that’s unique about this 200-year-old club, which is changing with the times while not compromising its standards and its history.
The Bicentenary International Regatta
The Royal Yacht Squadron will be 200 years old on 1 June this year and in celebration the club has invited members of 25 clubs around the world for a week of racing from 25-31 July, in boats of all sizes from J/70 sportsboats to at least three of the mighty J Class classics .
A number of the bigger boats will arrive from Newport, USA, at the end of the Transatlantic Race 2015 , organised by the Royal Yacht Squadron in conjunction with the New York YC, the Royal Ocean Racing Club and the Storm Trysail Club as part of the celebrations.
The three J Class yachts confirmed to date are Lionheart , Ranger and Velsheda . Velsheda was built by Camper & Nicholsons in the 1930s and a couple of decades ago was a regular sight on the Solent as a day charter boat.
Ranger was an aristocrat of a boat, owned by Harold Vanderbilt and winner of 32 of the 34 races she ever sailed, successfully defending the America’s Cup in 1937. She was eventually scrapped and the new Ranger is a faithful replica.
Lionheart is a new J built to a similar set of plans to Ranger from the archives of designers Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens. She made her mark in J racing winning the Kings 100 Guineas Cup in Cowes in 2012. The appearance of the J Class at the Royal Yacht Squadron Bicentenary International Regatta will be a rare treat for Solent spectators.
The week of racing promises to be a lively set of events, including fleet racing under IRC and level rating plus team racing for younger sailors. Members of the 25 invited clubs who can’t get their own boats to Cowes will still be able to compete thanks to the entire fleet of Sunsail Farr 40s being made available for charter, offering closely matched racing.
The highlight of the week is likely to be the Race Around the Island. Ashore, the social programme features parties and gatherings at the Castle and other special venues, culminating in a Grand Party at Osborne House on 30 July.

Winter sailors storm sag harbor: small boats, low temps, big hearts.
By Reporter Staff
- Share on Facebook Facebook Created with Sketch.
- Share on Twitter Twitter Created with Sketch.
During summer months, the Reporter’s sports section is saturated with sailing stories. But although many boats are stored for the winter, some sailors continue to hone their skills year-round, and an increasing number of them hail from Shelter Island.
Since November, over a dozen Islanders have taken the South Ferry to participate in weekend dinghy racing out of Breakwater Yacht Club, a nonprofit community sailing center.
What had been a small fleet over the past few years has grown tremendously this winter, averaging double-digit boats on the starting line, with a few days seeing 15 boats gliding through the icy waters of Sag Harbor.
Regulars from Shelter Island include Peter and Rachel Beardsley, Alicia Rojas, Mackenzie Speece, and Marc Robert, with cameos from Caitlin Cummings, Erik Langendal, Jennifer Van Zandt, Paul Zinger, Phoenix Bliss, and Ed Kiaer.
“Frostbiting,” as the sport of winter sailboat racing is known in the sailing community, is “the equivalent of skiing by the sea,” explained Mr. Robert. Competitors don thick neoprene wetsuits, or drysuits — a suit with latex or neoprene seals — intended to keep you fully dry if you fall in the water, something that happens surprisingly frequently despite the water temperature, which averages only 40 degrees in the coldest months.
Thick rubber gloves are also commonplace, along with high-tech base layers, warm hats, and of course, lifejackets.
There are at least a half dozen other winter sailing fleets on Long Island still competing regularly each weekend as conditions allow, although after Sag Harbor, the next closest fleet is in Sayville.
“In the summer, people may sail many different types of boats,” according to Peter Beardsley. “In the winter, everyone crazy enough to want to be on the water typically competes in the same type of boat, so you get to sail against people you don’t normally get to race against in warmer months, and those sailors often include those who are the most dedicated.”
In Sag Harbor, the vessel of choice is not for the faint of heart — the singlehanded 13-foot Laser class sailboat – easy enough to sail that they are often helmed by juniors in warmer weather, but high performance enough to be raced in the Olympics, and tippy enough to make for some dramatic capsizes.
With hypothermia an ever-present risk, safety is of paramount importance in winter sailing. “If the air temperature is below 30 degrees or if the wind speed is above 20 knots, the fleet often stays home,” Mr. Beardsley stated.
As a concession, the Breakwater fleet does not adhere to a rigid schedule, waiting until later in the week to pick a day to sail when the weather looks best — as a result, the fleet opted not to sail Saturday this week in the breeze and rain, but squeezed in six races Sunday afternoon when the sun came out and winds abated.
Peter’s wife Rachel joined the fleet this winter and appreciates the fleet’s flexibility. “The set-up at Breakwater helps to maximize warmth as we launch off of docks rather than beach launching, and we only race for 90 minutes.”
The brisk air also tends to lead to shorter races. A typical day sees sailors arrive by noon to rig and dress, launch boats by 1 p.m., compete in six short races that take only 7 minutes each, making for close quarters racing and finishes sometimes determined by inches.
Merchant Marine Cummings raced collegiately for SUNY Maritime and comes to Breakwater when she is not at sea. “Frostbiting brings out some talented people that are willing to brave the cold for fierce competition,” she said.
Once ashore typically around 3 p.m., the sailors gather for beverages of varying temperatures and varieties over a spirited debrief organized by the day’s winner with an emphasis on fleet Q&A and education. Rachel, who was raised in Iowa as a non-sailor, began racing Lasers only nine months ago, and has proven to be a quick study, winning several races this winter.
“When you’re racing in the cold, you want to feel as though you’re learning something,” she noted.
Win or lose, there are a lot of ways to enjoy the game. Ms. Rojas, an avid cold-water swimmer and sailor, enjoys being out in nature.
“The beauty of the crystal-clear water and the emptiness of the harbor is a sharp contrast to summer’s hustle and bustle,” she said. “The spirited camaraderie of our fleet lifts us all up with laughter, learning, and teamwork.”

Amadeus Description
Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.
