Designed for Serious Cruising

With elegant exterior lines that give it a timeless appeal paired with exceptional functionality, the Fleming 55 quickly established itself as one of the finest cruising yachts in its class when it was launched in 1986. The features on the Fleming 55, the first model introduced by Tony Fleming, have become staples in the Fleming lineup; a dedicated pilothouse, low profile design, fine forward entry, and semi-displacement hull and twin engine power which allow for efficient cruising at displacement speeds or the ability to plane and run in the high teens when needed.

It is the low profile of the Fleming 55 which gives it such an attractive overall appearance as well as a low center gravity which provides unparalleled stability in even the roughest seas. With a spacious cockpit, and wide walk-around side decks sitting just a foot and a half above the waterline, the Fleming 55 provides easy boarding and docking in nearly any scenario.

The 55’s interior features a centerline hallway, a hallmark of the Fleming design, which provides the opportunity to properly appreciate the full length of the vessel from transom to forepeak, and allows the minimal use of steps which are strategically situated. The steps leading to below deck are adjacent to those which access the raised pilothouse. The main salon features an L-shaped settee and a high-low table which can be used for both dining and cocktails, a wet bar, and a cabinet with a retractable TV and space for additional entertainment components. A fully-equipped galley, designed to allow use when underway, is located on the same level. Below deck are a master stateroom with an en-suite bath, and two additional staterooms and a second full bath.

While the overall layout of the Fleming 55 has proven so functional that it has remained relatively consistent since its inception – with subtle changes and improvements made with each new hull – the materials, electronics and technology are ever-evolving ensuring that it is outfitted with only the most up-to-date systems.

Purchasing a Fleming 55 allows you to reap the benefits of decades of refinement on a vessel which will confidently stand the test of time.

A Source of Universal Satisfaction

...that every Fleming Yacht bears the distinctive look of the first boat. Of course, they are very different under the hood as we continue to develop and refine the designs as a result of feedback, experience and new technology. Our boats may have the classic look but, technically, they are always at the cutting edge in design and equipment. Our focus as a company has always been on the boats themselves and in working to make them the very best that we can. It is for this reason that we go to work every day and do what we do.

Innovations that make life easier

This ocean-going catamaran offers it all. Tilting helms to combine steering pleasure, visibility and perfect protection from the elements. Whether you want to enjoy the view of the water and your sails, comfortably installed on the double bench seat, or protected from the elements in the cockpit, you keep perfect control of the boat. Comfortable seating on each side, standing supports in the middle position, or even sitting sheltered in the cockpit, you’re sure to need thousands of miles to decide on your favorite helm position! Easy movement and unobstructed views

With its wide saloon opening on the cockpit, its flush floor and its bay windows disappearing completely behind the coachroof bulkhead, the Outremer 55 has been designed to ensure ergonomic continuity of space and make moving around on board easier.

The 360° view from the saloon and cockpit allows exceptional visibility of the water and the environment, and greatly contributes to comfort on board. From the chart table, of course, but also when cooking or during meals, the forward vision is never interrupted. A crucial factor for a serene cruise on your ocean-going catamaran!

A central island that can be transformed into a high table

Nothing is more pleasant than preparing a meal, having drinks and entertaining around the island table, which offers an extra sitting area thanks to the fold-up shelf.

Exterior design

The owner of the Oceanis 55 will enjoy great sensations and safe sailing on this balanced hull with a comfortable deck plan and a high standard of finish. She includes important innovations, such as the mainsail arch, mast position, balanced sail plan, 45° companionway, and electric swim platform, which all go to make this cruiser easy to handle. Equipped with the Incidence D4 Performance Pack, she is capable of performances second to none.

yacht 55ft

Interior design

Pioneering, the Oceanis 55 has opted for an outstanding level of interior comfort. With lots of glazed openings, a fully glazed shower for the owner cabin in terms of interior design, she has a wonderfully serene atmosphere.  Her galley is very well equipped and very spacious, her interior can be adapted to multiple layouts, and there is scope for personalizing her ambiance by choosing very different woodwork and linings to create a refined and welcoming atmosphere.

yacht 55ft

Bright and a joy to live on

In the cockpit, at anchor, on deck or inside, the Oceanis 55 offers generous well-ventilated spaces. With rectangular portholes offering a view of the horizon, there is plenty to see and lots of light in all circumstances.

yacht 55ft

Sunbathing areas

Combined with the cockpit’s L-shaped seats, the two sun-loungers on the roof cleverly provide extra places to relax outside. At anchor, the huge aft platform lowers to provide a terrace at sea level.

Her hull stands out for its bold taut lines and its colour can be personalized over and over again, making her an unprecedentedly stylish cruiser.

Winches at the helm station

The unique design centres all the winches at the helm station so that all manoeuvres can be carried out alone. This is very reassuring on a 55 foot sailing yacht.

Skipper cabin

The fourteen berth version features a double fore cabin for the skipper, meaning that any crew configuration can be envisaged.

A stunning exterior profile and sweeping silhouette will capture attention in any marina. With new features and stylistic cues from the automotive world, this 55-foot project will be an exciting addition to the Sport Yacht range. Built upon the Superhawk 55 hull, the Sport Yacht variant offers several dimensions of outside and inside space.

The aft cockpit offers comfortable seating for up to six guests. Most notably, the Sports Bridge overhang creates a cocooned effect in the aft cockpit, contributing to the overall feeling of privacy and comfort. The Sports Bridge is a defining feature of the all-new 55 Sport Yacht. This agile 55-foot performance model benefits from an upper helm console for a second driving position and aft seating for socialising. The Sports Bridge offers a third dimension of space on board that allows owners and guests to cruise in harmony.

The 55 Sport Yacht combines style and functionality in every detail, low-level LED deck lighting and a new fixed signature transom traverse connect the port and starboard sides, even when the bathing platform is lowered. The aft profile is both beautiful and functional. Dual transom steps lead to the cockpit and side decks, which lead on to the foredeck, featuring a large sun pad and ample storage.

The 55 Sport Yacht interior layout is exceptionally flexible and can be customised to meet owner preferences. The main deck welcomes guests with an open and spacious saloon configuration. There is deep, comfortable seating to port and a full-size galley with refrigeration, oven and hob with a high-level TV on the starboard side.

Forward of the saloon lies the helm console with twin bolstered seats on the starboard side and storage to port. The lower deck comprises two comfortable cabins, separated by a generous dining and utility space.  Alternatively, you can opt for a spacious fully functional galley and increase the main deck saloon seating by replacing the upper galley with more seating and a fall and rise TV. There is also a further alternative in having an additional twin cabin and en-suite, a design success that is unique to the sector.

The interior design of the 55 Sport Yacht exemplifies Sunseeker’s customer-first approach to style, comfort and practicality. The luxurious owner’s cabin positioned amidships offers space and privacy with plenty of home comforts. A large double bed with either a storage console or a breakfast seating group to starboard and a large storage console to port accompanies a full-height wardrobe and spacious en suite.

Azimut Fly 53 Review (2022 Edition)

Azimut's latest offering, the 53, is an important entry-level model, potentially serving as a buyer's first experience with this Italian builder. Moreover, it stands poised to compete directly with formidable rivals in its class.

Azimut Fly 53 Review (2022 Edition) image 1

Azimut, alongside designer Alberto Mancini, has been quietly revolutionizing flybridge designs with a blend of boldness and elegance, coupled with luxurious interiors. This approach is exemplified in their latest flagship, the 37m Grande Trideck. Now, the question arises: Can they replicate this winning formula on a 50-footer?

Our Scores Explained

Performance & Handling

Around the marina.

The 53 Fly is only available with Volvo Penta's IPS950 and that, of course, means joystick control. The boat responds well to inputs from the joystick even if you do feel the boat's height with the hard top fitted as it rolls a touch during sideways maneuvers. The handling of the boat isn't an issue it's the view from the helms that makes life a little tricky.

Azimut 53 Fly exterior

You can't see the aft end of the boat from the flybridge and it's hard to communicate with the crew from the lower helm so it would make sense to, at the very least, add some cameras around the boat so you can use the MFDs to check position or tick the optional cockpit docking station for a better view aft. If you moor with the stern to the dock regularly I would say this is a must-have.

Moving around the boat is easy enough and there's a healthy amount of deck storage for fenders and lines but the lack of a side door into the saloon means crewing isn't as easy as it could be.

The challenge with only providing one engine option is that it has to suit the boat perfectly and, thankfully, the D11 725hp motors of the IPS950 installation are a great match to the 53's refined, soft-riding hull shape. We topped out at a comfortable 31 knots (even touching 34 knots at one point with a bit of Solent tide beneath us) and cruised at 26 knots where the range is in the region of 300nm. The fuel burn curve is pretty flat once up to planing speeds, though, so even if you want to get a bit of a lick on the range doesn't drop too sharply.

The handling is light but has a good amount of feel and the boat turns nicely for a weighty flybridge cruiser. The best handling boat I've driven in this category is the shaft-drive Princess F55 and though the Azimut may not be quite as sharp in the turns or feel quite as well balanced it's not far off. It's very quiet, too. IPS helps with this but the well-engineered engine room and its layers of sound insulation improve the sound levels even more.

We didn't have much chop to play with during the test but on a busy day in the Solent, the wash from other craft did little to put the Azimut off its stride. The boat feels solid through the waves with no bangs, squeaks or rattles emanating from the hull or interior. It's an easy boat to drive at all speeds and, from the comfort of the upper helm especially, feels like a boat you could comfortably cover some decent ground on.

Design & Build

Yes, style is subjective, but can anyone argue against the idea that this Azimut 53 is one of the most beautiful 50ft flys ever made? Mancini’s hand is obvious from the angular bow and clean sharp lines that run aft, metallic topsides, and black style lines stretching the yacht out further, delivering an impressive sleekness. Of course, the demands of the market mean that an unsightly hard top is never too far away and even the aesthetically conscious Azimut has had to concede. If it were my boat, I'd be opting for the canvas bimini every day of the week.

Azimut 53 Fly exterior

Keeping the profile low while delivering good interior volume is incredibly hard to do at this length. And deliver it they have. A quick look at the layout suggests all the right parts are held within this sleek yacht. Three cabins, including a full-beam owner’s stateroom, are found below decks with an open, spacious saloon above, the galley aft design connecting the interior to the aft deck while also delivering a very practical galley that runs across the beam.

But then, nothing short of excellent would cut it in a market that includes several award-winning yachts from the likes of Absolute, Sunseeker, Princess, and Ferretti.

azimut 53

Form and Function

Azimut is, it seems, not only aware of the competition but also how much use yachts of this size get put to by their owner-operators. The interior reflects the serious cruising requirements of a 16m flybridge with masses of stowage and easy-going nature that you just know will be a joy to use.

This being an Azimut, the practicalities of yachting life run alongside plenty of styles. The new interiors we saw on the Grande Tri-Deck and 68 find a subtle home here, with dreamy, pastel soft furnishings, not a hard edge to be found, and a choice of clean cool finishes or warmer oak cabinetry, detailed with copper inlays.

Interior Accommodation

The 53’s interior design is wonderfully relaxing, there are marshmallows less sumptuous than the saloon’s inviting, facing sofas. To the main port seating, an electric pedestal allows the dining table to drop into an occasion berth, a useful feature on a cruising yacht.

We are now so used to builders working in massive glass sections that they can almost be overlooked, as opposed to gratefully looked through. Here, the saloon guests will enjoy unbroken views across the water from single-piece side screens, or perhaps watch the pop-up TV to starboard.

azimut 53 interior

That said, the low window line means that taller people won't have a great view out when standing in the saloon. The window line is undeniably sleek but the views out aren't as good as board the likes of the Absolute 52 Fly and Princess F55. There's also an odd lack of ventilation. There's a small window above the galley, aft, but there is no way of getting any natural ventilation into the helm station - not even a manual sliding window - so it gets pretty uncomfortable on hot days.

azimut 53 salon

The 53’s galley design spreads across the aft of the main deck, creating not only a space you can cook in but also delivering lots of practicality, from a proper cabinet refrigerator and dishwasher to designated drawers for glassware and crockery. The beauty of this galley is how everything is so neatly concealed behind the oak panels of the cabinetry, many with satisfying push catches that reveal things like the microwave and storage for the boat's crockery. It's a very clean look.  The design doesn’t allow that complete inside-outside flow into the cockpit, that large fridge winning out over an adjoining window and bar, but it does connect up the saloon and deck easily enough.

azimut 53 interior

Tri-Cab Triumph

The three cabins are all excellent. The light, relaxed feel of the saloon continues with a neat twin guest cabin forward VIP that shares a toilet and shower compartment. The owner’s stateroom is full beam with the ensuite lying forward at the cabin entrance. There is also space for a washing machine across the way.

azimut 53 interior

The layout is interesting. Instead of having the central doorway into the VIP cabin with the day head to port, the day head/VIP ensuite is centrally located, leaving the entrance to the VIP cabin to port. This arrangement creates a more spacious bathroom and provides a separate passageway into the VIP through the head compartment. It also puts the day head closer to the twin cabin, which without its own ensuite will use the day head as its bathroom. Some boats at this size have bunks in the third cabin so it's nice to see side-by-side berths aboard the 53 Fly.

azimut 53 interior

The owner’s cabin is luxurious and clever in equal measure. Two smart strips of glass line the walls, with mirrors positioned to visually extend the window design and create a sense of even more space. The yacht’s sleek profile is perhaps felt a little in this cabin, with slightly less volume than say the Sunseeker Manhattan 55, but there is still full headroom around the double berth and space for a sofa, dressing area, and, most impressively, a full-height walk-in wardrobe.

Helm Station

The low brow of the windscreen means the view is a little restricted when standing at the lower helm but the adjustable seat makes it easy to get comfortable with a decent view forward thanks to thin windscreen mullions and the position of the wheel towards the centreline. The dash itself is stylish and attractive, dominated as it is upstairs by the comically large and thick steering wheel.

Our boat had the Gold electronics package which provides 12in Garmin MFDs over the standard 9in ones and this is an investment worth making. It's good to see a remote keypad to control the screens on the dash as well as the touchscreen functionality which can be a bit tricky to use if the boat is bouncing around.

azimut 53 helm

The lack of ventilation is one issue at the lower helm but having no window to be able to communicate with crew limits the scenarios where you would want to moor the boat from here. When some rivals have full side doors it's not really good enough to have no windows around the helm at all.

Upstairs there are few complaints. The seated position is excellent and the layout of the dash works very well indeed. Having the major controls on a long molding to port means the skipper can sit back in their seat and reach the joystick, throttles, and the remote for the twin MFDs really easily. The dash is clearly laid out and nice to look at, though it could do with a bit more storage for loose items.

Deck Lifestyle

The flybridge is pretty clear on its focus, it’s not the biggest but it is very welcoming with a circular design that is perfect for loafing, lounging and generally enjoying the good life. A large sun pad forward is joined by a wraparound aft seat and fold-out bar-dining table that will also convert to a massive pad. In between, a useful wet bar will keep guests supplied with cold drinks. The optional electro-hydraulic bimini is the more pleasing option for the eye but many will fall for the versatility and ease of the hardtop, which has built-in lighting and a sliding canvas roof operated by a one-touch control on the upper helm.

azimut 53 deck

Down the flybridge stairs, the aft cockpit keeps things simple with an L-shaped bench and dining area, fender, and warp storage below the seats. Even though there is no through window to the galley, it’s great that Azimut has chosen to still deliver a neat bar area, sat beneath the flybridge overhang, making the aft deck feel more sociable and sophisticated. The entire area can be enclosed with canopy covers to extend the living space in poor weather, too.

At this length, a forward lounge is far from guaranteed so it should be fully appreciated. This one has a separate seating area, the sunpad running down to the bow. The backrest mechanism is particularly smart and uses hinges and gas rams so you can quickly switch between the two positions. There is also the option for a shade sitting on carbon poles, a useful addition when in port or at anchor.

azimut 53 deck

At the stern, the hydraulic bathing platform will easily launch a tender (up to 500kg) or serve as a fun swim platform when the boat's at anchor. The transom also gives access to the crew cabin with a single bed and toilet, it could easily make up another occasional guest berth but is probably destined to be a high-end storage area.

Value For Money

The Azimut 53 must rank as one of the smartest and most cohesive 50ft yachts on the market. In the 10m-15m market, we are seeing a move away from luxurious detail and craft, with builders employing clever if often blandly homogeneous production finishes. Here, the level of thought, design, and finish on offer gets the luxury balance right and separates this yacht from what is a crowded market. So while there might be larger yachts in this sector, and some that can match the Azimut on the finish, few mix style, speed, and space so effortlessly.

azimut 53, owners cabin

It feels like a quality product, too, not only in the obvious stuff like brightwork and interior finish but the engine room is one of the best in the sector with plenty of space to work on the engines, a very neat installation, and some useful extras like a freshwater hose and a pair of wandering lights that attach to the ceiling for easy illumination of the darker corners.

The base price for a 53 is €UR 1.1M ex VAT (at the time of writing) but our test boat had around €UR 500,000 of extras including the hard top, Seakeeper, Gold navigation package, crew cabin fit-out, uprated generator and air-conditioning meaning the price as tested was €UR 1.72M ex VAT (at the time of writing).

To use a boxing analogy, a 50ft flybridge might well be the best pound-for-pound cruiser out there. Big and heavy enough to be comfortable in most seas, it is still agile and rewarding to drive, offers three good cabins over a 40-footer’s two but is just as easy to self-pilot. The Azimut 53 does all of this and adds some breathtaking design that will look good forever, but, importantly, never forgets that while it is a luxury yacht it is also one that is destined to be used, and you will definitely enjoy using this boat. It's a shame about the lack of ventilation in the saloon and the view aft from the flybridge but there's still a lot to like about this fabulously stylish flybridge cruiser.

Reasons to Buy

  • Handsome design
  • Handling and performance
  • Well proportioned cabins
  • Excellent engine room

Things to Consider

  • Lack of ventilation in the saloon
  • Poor view aft from upper helm

There is no lack of fast, spacious 50ft flybridge yachts, with all the big players involved, which is why any new boat coming to market needs to go hard or go home. You can demand and win 30knots, three cabins, bright glass-clad salons and spacious decks from any number of builders and with a good deal of variation on price. What you won't always enjoy is the style and beauty on offer here, but we shall leave that subjective point to the beholder.

The award-winning Sunseeker Manhattan 55 is an obvious rival, big on space and luxury it is arguably the class leader. Azimut’s old adversity, Ferretti , has the clean and serene 550, a larger yacht with crisp Italian style and inside and a very similar layout to the 53.

The Princess F55 is another close rival, and notably longer yacht, with the same layout on and below decks and a similarly light and welcoming style. The British boat has a big flybridge with masses of seating.

The Absolute 52 Fly and Galeon 530 Fly offer clever deck and interior spaces and more bombastic styling but they are unlikely to be as dynamically sweet as the Azimut.

It is to the Azimut 53’s credit that all of its main three-cabin rivals are longer boats. Half a meter might not sound much but it counts for a lot on interior volume, so Azimut and its design team are to be congratulated for delivering this amount of easy-living yacht under 17m (55ft).

This Swedish company offers a new concept of an aluminium hull with bespoke interior. Does it work? asks Toby Hodges

yacht 55ft

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

Buying a new yacht? Generally, you have the choice of a production boat or going the more adventurous custom route. For a superyacht you might employ a project manager to help you through from design to build, to fit-out and trials. At the less fanciful end of the scale it’s more a case of finding a design you like within your budget from a production yard, or braving the bespoke route alone if you can’t.

Adventure Yachts brings some of that big boat mentality to a smaller scale. It’s a new business that neatly fills that grey area between production and full custom builds, by project managing builds using select specialist subcontractors. And it has started by building an enticing 55-footer.

This yacht was nominated for European Yacht of the Year 2016 – see details here

Intrigued? We certainly were when we had the chance to sail her from La Rochelle.

The 55 is a bare aluminium cruiser that is built and fitted out by various specialist yards under the management of Adventure Yachts. The result is a quality bluewater yacht with a bespoke interior.

The concept is the brainchild of Swedish sailor Bo Gummeson, who has a business history in mechanical components and hydraulics. Initially Gummeson planned to build a yacht for him and his wife. “But then I thought it would be more interesting to find a market for this idea,” he says.

The hull was welded and insulated in Germany, where the machinery was also installed. It was then trucked to Sweden for fit-out at Orust Yacht Service (OYS), which owns the former Najad shipyard.

The reason to subcontract to multiple yards is that Gummeson believes that no single company can be specialised enough in all areas.

“We started with what we wanted in an aluminium cruiser,” Gummeson explains. “She had to be fast, with a deep, lifting keel, with Delta lines and a long waterline length.”

He also wanted low maintenance, and for that, aluminium is king.

Luxury in metal

It seems bare aluminium is back in vogue. Some of the most desirable new bluewater cruisers are aluminium and I have often been surprised that more bluewater cruisers don’t choose metal yachts – although the imminent launch of the new Bestevaer Pure 45, plus Garcia’s expanding Exploration range will offer greater choice in this material.

Aluminium is light, strong and corrosion proof (when correctly treated); it requires no maintenance and, unlike glassfibre and resin, it is recyclable. Aluminium hulls are formidably durable. They also provide a comparatively unrestricted shell into which to design your choice of internal layout.

Gummeson stresses that the boat is largely customisable. “The cockpit, superstructure, transom and keel are some examples where we are able to change the outer design. The inner design is only limited by the watertight bulkheads forward and aft.”

#MC150981

The AY55 costs €1.8m inc VAT (£1.4m) – which Gummeson says is pitched at the same price range as the Najad 570 and fitted out at the same shipyard. “But we have included everything,” he adds. It is, however, hard to compare prices when you consider the after-sales service and resale value.

Berckemeyer Yacht Design’s Martin Menzner did the naval architecture for the concept. The hull has an appealing, long, low, modern shape, with beamy aft chined sections and a powerful sailplan.

The inherent stability of this shape is further bolstered by a deep telescopic T-keel – somewhat of a novelty for a bluewater aluminium cruiser, the majority of which have swing keels. Plus her substantial two 1,100lt freshwater tanks can also be used as water ballast.

The need for speed

“For me it was very important to have a good sailing boat, with a fast hull,” explains Gummeson. This focus on performance goes some way to explaining the generous sailplan, which includes a square-top main and laminate sails.

These carbon tape-on-Spectra UK Sails have double taffeta skins to make them more durable, creating a performance cruising suit that “will last eight to ten years,” according to the UK Sails rep.

I was taken by the rig, which is designed and set up like an Open-style racer. So the mast is positioned relatively far aft, creating a powerful area for the non-overlapping cutter foresails, and it is easy to change through the gears from the cockpit while short-handed.

This mainsail provides power up high, which helped her match the light winds we experienced, while the single-line reefing system, combined with efficient running backstays, makes it easy to depower. The genoa and self-tacking jib are on furlers and a large bowsprit aids the setting of flying sails. It’s a superb set-up for enjoying and maximising sailing time when short-handed.

We may not have had the conditions to test the bulletproof potential her raw looks suggest, but the gentle Force 3 was ideal for showing off this performance aspect of her rig and sails.

#MC150981

We were able to maintain 6 knots both upwind and down, the latter reaching with the aid of a generous asymmetric kite in just six knots of dying breeze.

Axel Nissen-Lie, a European Yacht of the Year colleague and editor of Seilas magazine in Norway, sailed the AY55 for 150 miles from Orust to Oslo and confirmed my opinion that she sails more like a performance yacht than a bluewater cruiser. He averaged 9.2 knots over a 50-mile reach. “I have sailed many boats built for long trips, but none has impressed me as much under sail,” he told me.

Nissen-Lie says she can be heavy on the helm when powered up. Equally, during the light conditions we experienced, there was little sensation through the chain steering – perhaps not surprising when you consider the sizeable twin rudders that are designed to help take the load if she is beached.

The cockpit is particularly well laid out for short-handed sailing, with sheets, halyards and running backstays led to six powered winches within reach of the wheels. These electric hydraulic Andersen winches have proportional control. This means they are torque-sensitive to the touch, allowing for instant full power or gradual winding speed.

Hot on hydraulics

Gummeson worked for a hydraulics company for eight years, hence commercial spec hydraulic systems are employed throughout, including for the keel, windlasses, winches, vang and furlers. “There are too many bad solutions in the marine market, so I wanted to do it properly,” Gummeson explains.

All these hydraulic demands are power-hungry though – the AY55 has a 4x4kW 24V Powerpack motor, plus genset, inverter and 720ah of AGM house batteries.

The forward end of the cockpit provides good protection thanks to a combination of deep benches, a fixed windscreen and a sprayhood supported by the mainsheet arch. The arch keeps the mainsheet clear of the cockpit and yet provides standing headroom in the cockpit. The cockpit sole is lined with cork, which felt comfortable underfoot, looked smart and had no stains.

The side decks are wide, the guardrails extra high and there are chunky toerails. Gummeson has employed a neat solution on the inside edge of the bulwarks – Ronstan tracks allow harness lines to be clipped onto cars and slide freely from bow to stern.

DSCF0430

The hydraulically operated door to the tender garage, with substantial rubber gasket, is a telling sign of how solidly the AY55 is built. It even has cleats on the outboard end for tying the dinghy to. The volume here is enough for a 3.10m RIB with a 9.9hp outboard mounted. Gummeson admits that they “built a 40ft boat on a 55ft hull”.

Swedish comforts

The quality mahogany interior of the AY55 is reminiscent of Najad, which is not surprising when you remember it is fitted out by the same yard. “We decided to make this very much like a Najad because that’s the best level of interior you can get,” Gummeson explains. “But you can obviously have it as minimal as you like.”

#MC150981

The raised saloon and two-cabin layout, designed for two liveaboards, feels generous in size, including a coachroof providing plenty of natural light. Instead of a second aft cabin, for example, there is a full workshop abaft the passageway galley, plus an office and a laundry forward. But with the ends surrendered to tender and sail stowage, the internal volume does feel compressed.

Future owners have the scope to change the layout completely. Adventure training types might prefer a series of bunk cabins forward, for instance. Certainly a Pullman cabin in place of the office, with a chart table within reach of the companionway, might have more universal appeal.

#MC150981

The box for the lifting keel is concealed neatly at the forward end of the saloon. The saloon is compact, however, and the sole too low to see out of the coachroof windows. Again this is a matter of individual choice.

“We tried to keep easy access to everything,” says Gummeson. He pressed a button and the saloon floor rose like the bonnet of a pimped-up muscle car to reveal the engine. Once Gummeson decided on an air compressor to lift the large flat-screen TV, he used pneumatic cylinders for a range of pushbutton trickery aboard, including for the companionway hatch and ballast valve. Even the office chair swings out to the pleasant ‘psssht’ sound of forced air.

Waterkampioen Opnames van de voor de European Yacht of the Year 2015-2016 genomineerde boten in La Rochelle

Other than easing the manual workload, an air compressor can be useful aboard for inflating the dinghy, paddleboards, fenders and even to provide air to dive with under the hull – although a pneumatically controlled chair is perhaps over the top.

Back to the engine, which is mounted centrally for optimum weight distribution and, thanks to the lifting floorboards, has all-round access. The rest of the machinery, including genset and banks of electronics, is meticulously installed in the aft workroom – as well as a proper workbench with vice and a view through the hull window.

The AY55 is a fusion of different boatbuilding worlds: production and custom yachts; bluewater and performance cruising; a stark metal hull with Swedish refined interior. It’s a clever business concept and a clever boat. Some might argue it feels a bit too clever, somewhat OTT in some of the hydraulic and pneumatic systems – more like a showboat in fact, but then I guess that is what it is.

The performance hull design and rig are superb. Her fit-out could be lighter, but she is still around six tonnes lighter than a similar-sized Hallberg-Rassy or Najad and has much larger tanks. The large tender garage perhaps monopolises too much interior volume in this version.

But I really like it – for its individuality, its inclusion of different ideas, from pneumatic solutions to safety rails, to the protected cork-soled cockpit. As Bo Gummeson says: “The fun stuff is to design and build it… this is the small superyacht way of doing things.”

The question is, will others share his vision or would they rather do a custom job themselves? At least they now have the choice, the ideal platform, a proven boat that they can see and touch, before deciding on a bespoke interior built by Swedish masters of their craft.

This is an adventurous yacht indeed.

Trash to treasure: Cans, license plates, road signs make solar boat shine

A substantial 55-foot solar-electric sailing catamaran has been unveiled by German yacht design and engineering studio iYacht GmbH.

Named Hu’chu 55, the firm claims the vessel represents a significant leap forward in eco-friendly design. Its body is derived from over 90 percent scrap metal.

The vessel was designed on order for Daniel Roesner, a renowned actor, film producer, and environmental entrepreneur.

The aluminum developed especially for the Yacht utilizes scrap from license plates, road signs, cosmetic cans, and more. The firm claims the aluminum sheet’s CO2 footprint is reduced to under 2 kg CO2/kg, just one-eighth of the market average.

“We have designed and engineered a dozen multihulls in recent years, but the Hu’chu 55 represents a significant leap forward in terms of sustainability and circularity,” said Udo A. Hafner, CEO of iYacht’s, in a statement .

Versatile explorer

The Hu’chu 55’s design balances fast sailing capabilities with onboard comfort, making it ideal for living and working aboard. According to the firm, its robust construction suits high—and low-latitude navigation, crucial for ocean research like mapping global water quality.

Reinforced rudder axles and hulls withstand ice and collisions, while streamlined keels protect rudders and propellers during beaching. The iYacht team ensured dynamic stability and minimized pitching with ample wet deck clearance for smooth sailing.

Additional buoyancy reserves accommodate filmmaking equipment, crew, and diving gear. The Hamburg and Kiel firm provided comprehensive design, engineering, and construction services with a multidisciplinary team of over eight experts.

The interior of the boat is complimented with various tones of black and brown, while the exterior of the bare metal gives it a raw style appropriate for an explorer catamaran.

Sustainable sailing vessel

To reduce its environmental impact, the Hu’chu 55 makes considerable use of recyclable and recycled materials. In collaboration with a significant aluminum producer, Roesner, they created aluminum specifically designed for the Hu’chu 55, which is composed of more than 90 percent aluminum scrap and not a single pound of primary metal.

iYacht claims that due to the substantial integration of scrap, the material’s CO2 footprint is significantly reduced to less than 2 kg CO2/kg of aluminum sheet. This is a mere one-eighth of the market average—from discarded license plates, road signs, cosmetic cans, automotive and construction scraps, as well as shredded scrap from recycling and sorting plants.

The boat also uses recycled cork, salvaged wood, and natural fabrics. Daniel selected these materials because they are environmentally friendly and circular: using recycled and recovered materials closes the loop, lowers trash production, and gives these materials a second chance at life.

Renewable-powered catamaran

The design decision to increase the foresail area was complemented by the addition of two silent, vibration-free electric motors that provide propulsion when needed.

The vessel boasts ample battery capacity, exceeding 100 kWh, which can be recharged via solar panels and hydrogeneration. The latter utilizes the boat’s motion to spin the electric motor’s propellers, generating electricity through electromagnetic induction.

According to its maker, photovoltaic panels not only generate electricity but also reduce consumption by keeping the water heating system cool, maximizing efficiency. Renewable sources power the onboard vegetable garden, water treatment system, and all other energy needs, including the owner’s film editing room.

Emphasizing sustainability , Daniel insisted on avoiding high-energy air conditioning. Instead, the design team chose insulated glass, optimized shadow, and sun sheltering, and carefully studied ventilation systems to maintain comfort and energy efficiency.

In the future , Roesner aims to make partnerships with like-minded collaborators who share his vision for sustainable maritime practices. His goal is to scale up the production of the Hu’Chu, democratizing its technology to advance circularity in marine vessels.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
