Compact Mega Yachts: Finnish start-up aiming big with 53ft outboard-powered debut
- Top stories
New start-up, Compact Mega Yachts, has released renderings of two revolutionary new motor boats.
The CMY161 and CMY173 measure 53ft and 57ft respectively and feature striking angular styling, with an unusual raised pilothouse design. But it’s what’s hiding under the transom locker that differentiates them from every other competitor on the market – triple 300hp diesel outboard engines.
There are several claimed benefits to the use of diesel outboards when applied to designs of this size. For a start there is no conventional engineroom space, which not only makes the boats cheaper and quicker to build, but also means there’s more usable space for lower-deck accommodation. Plus diesel outboards are much more efficient than petrol ones when operating under the high loading conditions of a big, heavy boat.
The engines themselves are being supplied by OXE, which developed its range of 125-300hp diesel outboard engines primarily for commercial craft that prioritise reliability and running costs over outright performance. Its top-of-the-range 300hp L6 diesel outboard is based on a marinised version of BMW’s 3.0-litre six-cylinder car engine. In this application it is tuned to deliver a hefty 500Nm of torque at just 1,000rpm and a maximum 680Nm at only 1,750rpm.

Compact Mega Yachts’ designers are predicting a top speed of around 27 knots for both the CMY161 and CMY173 using all three engines, with fast-cruising speeds in the mid-20s. However, at a displacement speed of 7.5 knots, using just one engine, it will sip a mere one litre per mile, less than most sportsboats half its size.
If its predictions are correct this will mean a potential range of 3,000nm from its 3,000-litre tank capacity. An adaptive onboard control system will decide automatically whether to run one, two or three engines for the conditions and speed selected.
It will also decide which engines to run when, in order to balance the engine hours evenly between the engines, although the skipper can override this manually when needed. Whenever an engine is not being used it will be lifted clear of the water to minimise drag and fouling build-up.
The open plan saloon and galley extends across the full beam of the main deck
Both models will be built using the same tooling and feature much the same layout on the main deck for the saloon and galley; the big difference is at the forward end of the lower deck. The shorter model features two double cabins: the owner’s suite in the bow and a twin-bed guest cabin amidships with a separate shower room. The slightly longer 173 manages to squeeze in a third cabin.
Another unusual feature of both craft is the full-beam main saloon, which extends across the full 4.8m (15ft 9in) width of the boat by pushing the side decks up to flybridge level. The super-spacious forward owner’s cabin has been made possible by raising the interior helm onto its own separate bridge deck.
Although work has not yet commenced on the first boat, two potential clients are said to be at advanced stages of negotiation and the company’s management team confidently expects to see the first boat afloat by summer 2022.
The owner’s cabin makes full use of the spacious bow area
The boats are to be built in Finland by Ocean Quality Systems (OQS), a contract builder based on the north-west coast town of Pietarsaari (aka Jakobstad), best known as the home of top-end sailing yacht builders Nautor’s Swan and Baltic. Many of the OQS team of contractors have worked for one or both of those yards.
The base price, excluding taxes, for the CMY161 is €1,255,000; pricing for the CMY173 will be released shortly.
“There’s some really clever thinking behind this,” says MBY Editor Hugo Andreae. “I particularly like the fact you can run one or two engines only without the usual problems of drag and unbalanced engine hours.
“But I’m surprised Compact Mega Yachts haven’t made more use of the space freed up by the engine room to add more cabins.”
The CMY 173’s side decks are at flybridge level

SPECIFICATION
The CMY161 has been designed with a big boat look and feel, yet she is easily handled solo or by a couple cruising. Delivering this fresh and unique yacht to the prestige motorboat market has involved concept and styling by the Compact Mega Yachts team and architecture by Australian Naval Architect Paul Bury. The Upper Deck Lounge provides recreational space whilst the vessel is both at rest and underway. The rear dining area features a glass interactive dining table which can display navigation data, AIS charts, interactive entertainment, recreational games like chess and air hockey and much more.
Finnish boatbuilding skills from the locality of Jakobstad are legendary, Both the Nautor Swan and Baltic Yacht yards are located on the same headland within easy walking distance of the OQS factory. The CMY161 interior is built in modular units which are lowered into the vessel once complete. This method ensures the maximum quality of local craftsmanship, quality and accuracy. The interior of the 161 has a spacious, light and airy feel due to the additional volume created by the outboard engines. The styling is big boat and with gyro-stabilisation, the overall impression onboard is one of comfort and luxury associated with larger vessels.
Boatbuilding skills from the locality of Jakobstad in Finland are legendary. Many of the OQS team have honed their skills at Nautor’s Swan or Baltic Yachts, which are located on the same headland within easy walking distance of the OQS factory. The beautiful real wood interior of the CMY161 is built in modular units which are lowered into the vessel once complete. This method utilises local skills and craftsmanship to ensure maximum quality, efficiency and accuracy. The interior of the 161 has a spacious, light and airy feel due to the additional volume created by the ‘walk-over’ side decks. The clean lines, spacious and uncluttered styling, gives the overall impression of the comfort and luxury generally associated with larger vessels.
The standard CMY 161 features triple OXE Diesel 300hp outboard motors developed in conjunction with BMW. These outboards give extraordinary economy and low emissions whilst developing a very high level of torque. Through the bite of the stainless-steel propellers, the 900hp generated takes the 161 to around 27 knots at full speed and 24 knots cruising.
Compact Mega Yachts is pioneering “adaptable powering” by utilising only the number of engines and horsepower required to do the task at hand. Three for top speed, two for Joystick docking, or just the centre engine for casual or long-distance cruising. One engine, ECO mode, gives greater than 2,000-mile range at 7.5 knots using a minimal one litre of fuel per nautical mile.
And any maintenance required is aided by easy access. The front of the engines is accessible when lowered, or with them raised service the gearbox and props from the rear swim platform. If required, engines can be unbolted and easily removed for service, repair or upgrade without any costly deck or interior work.
OXE 300hp Diesel Outboards consume up to 40% less fuel compared to gas petrol outboards. Developed in-house with OXE, our 'adaptable powering' concept reduces fuel consumption further by only using the horsepower (engines) that are required. It reduces drag by keeping unused engines out of the water. Lower fuel usage and less drag dramatically reduces the consumption and cost of running. It also reduces pollution which depletes natures reserves less quickly. One might say ... it’s revolutionary. We call it ‘ECO Mode’.
The CMY 161 is rich with the latest technology. These features offer more comfort, safety and more fun! The OXE diesel engines are groundbreaking for longevity and fuel economy. Gyro stabilisation and ZIPWAKE dynamic trim-control make for a smoother, roll free experience. Joystick docking, GPS position-holding and Birds Eye docking all take the stress out of mooring or close quarter manoeuvring. State of the art Garmin electronics not only serve to navigate but they also communicate with the engines and entertainment systems. The PLC automated control system allows control of many electrical functions, but also monitors fuel and water tankage. The BOYD Touch Table will certainly be popular with families as it has endless digital interactive uses, as well as serving as a stylish dining table.

In today's interconnected word we all rely on our devices for both essential needs and entertainment. The CMY161 will embrace technology by offering a hydraulic height-adjustable interactive dining table. The table will offer interactive content via the BOYD luxury brand platform plus access to important navigation features such as AIS charting and weather data. The BOYD TOUCH TABLE has full internet connectivity. Information on all major aspects of the 161 are accessible through the table. But its greatest feature is hidden ... at the press a hidden button and the whole surface of the table raises 80 degrees electronically to become a 4k cinema 55" screen for the interior!
CMY 161 COMMAND & CONTROL
The 161 has two control stations, the principle one on main deck level with co-pilot seating alongside. All the important controls are easily accessible. On the sun-deck lounge above there is a hidden control station for helming outside, which is particularly useful for manoeuvring in port.
On both saloon layout options, the large concertina doors at the rear of the saloon slide right back to connect the saloon with the outside dining area, featuring the IP67 rated BOYD Touch Table and seating for 6-8 guests.
The ‘Walk-Over’ side decks leading to the bow create greater room inside than in conventional walk-around side deck layouts. The salon, galley and dining area, gain nearly 30% more internal volume compared with an equivalent walk-around side decks boat.
Both interior options share the same forward cabin design. An owner suite, guest cabin and two heads with stall showers, makes the boat perfect for a family or two couples. The versatile saloon seating can be converted to sleeping areas, accommodating occasional guests.
CMY 161 STANDARD
The port side U-shaped dining area is suitable for comfortable dining for six and is convertible into a sleeping area. Aft on the port side is an entertainment centre and storage area.
Just steps down from the main saloon floor, the galley is tucked out of sight, but open enough to be socially connected. Plenty of counter space, ample storage and all the essential appliances, including a 4-burner induction stove, will compliment the best culinary skills.
Aft of the galley is a lounge area, which is also convertible into a sleeping area.
CMY 161 OPEN PLAN
Port side lounge/dining area is capable of seating 6-8 guests. With the table folded it converts to a lounge relaxation area. The area is convertible for sleeping for guests or crew if required.
Featuring a multi-purpose Breakfast & Bar style counter and a well appointed galley with no lack of working space, appliances or storage.
Space below the work surfaces house white goods and appliances to cater for the most discerning of chefs.

The first pavilion of Crocus Expo IEC hosted an extraordinary exposition of the 5th International exhibition of yachts and boats Moscow Boat Show. The show had been incredibly famous for five years already not only thanks to the specialists of the market segment as well as professional sportsmen but also thanks to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.
Moscow Boat Show 2012
The organizer of the project was the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. The show was supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine.
The exposition space increased up to 30 000 sq m and was accommodated in all 4 exhibition halls of the fairgrounds! 280 Russian (Arkhangelsk, Vyborg, Kazan, Kaluga, Republic of Karelia, Moscow and Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk region, Sochi, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Yaroslavl region) and foreign ( Denmark , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , Poland , USA , Turkey , Ukraine, Finland , France , Montenegro and Croatia ) companies participate in the show.
Moscow Boat Show provided the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continued to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!
Unique exhibits were presented at the show for the first time: exposition of private submarines from U-Boat Russia company, Marquis Yachts 420 SB motor yacht from Sport Bridge S. Marine series, SAGA-415 yacht from Saga Boats Norwegian shipyard, Jetlev-Flyer from MS Watersports.
Moscow Boat Show a Great Success
More than 400 yachts were displayed within the frames of the event including the largest boats ever exhibited in Russia – the 19-meter giant motor yacht Princess 54 as well as the Princess 50 yacht from Nord Marine and Baja speed boat from Burevestnik.
Domfinland OY unveiled a luxury project from Finnish real estate: a seaside premium class hotel in Hanko named consonant with the location Merihanko.
The trade fair was traditionally opened by a Gala Opening Ceremony. Arcady Zlotnikov, First Deputy Director Crocus Expo IEC, was the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show. Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspection on Small size Vessels (GIMS) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, Georguiy Shaiduko, Acting President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), Olympic champion in Atlanta and Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show also spoke at the ceremony.
The high-ranking guests noted dynamic development of the branch which well reasoned the intensive growth of the exposition and appearance of rather unique “gems”.
A number of business meetings and negotiations were held within the frames of the project: the exhibition was visited by a large delegation of Greek businessmen for the purpose of establishment of mutually beneficial cooperation with the Russian colleagues.
More than 400 yachts on display at the Show
Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS) celebrated its 100 anniversary within the frames of Moscow Boat Show and arranged an exposition of future sailing sport museum (rare awards, gifts, articles from private collections, pictures and etc.) which had been collected since 1912.
Due to carefully chosen running dates the show was visited by more than 26 000 people. The majority of the visitors were of targeted audience – vessel owners and specialists of the branch.
The work at the next edition of the show is under way! The show will be held in March 2013. The overall exhibit space will comprise 40 000 sq m. The exhibition will impress with exclusive exhibits and the latest technological achievements.
Moscow Boat Show was not only an entertaining but at the same time a business promotional event. Participation in the trade fair was a unique opportunity to present a company and products to a distinctly selected targeted audience of industry specialists. They were well prepared to discuss business in the Russian market and even to close a deal on-site.
The show helped representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improved national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 5 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar.
