Whisper-Yachts 50 - The first electric catamaran from a range of powercats from 40 to 60 feet

The success of Silent Yachts is being emulated, and that's surely a good thing! Symphony Marine is entering the electric catamaran market, but with more modest sizes from 40 to 60 feet, whereas the Silent range extends from 55 to 100 feet.

Guy Marchal, the founder of the Whisper-Yachts brand, asked Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design to draw this environmentally friendly catamaran with 320 square feet (30 m²) of solar panels (6 kWp), a 200-kWh battery pack and two 100-kW Torqeedo electric motors. The Whisper-Yachts 50 should be able to provide “clean” propulsion at 5/6 knots. It can of course sail faster - up to 18 knots - but at that speed, recharging the batteries is necessary through the generator and/or the shore power. The deck layout does not seem to inhibit the surface area of the solar panels - many areas remain well clear. Inside, the nacelle offers a decent 375 sq ft (35 m²), generously bordered by sliding windows. The manufacturer offers a three or four-cabin version. Whisper Yachts 50: the perfect catamaran for the tropics from Symphony Marine

As we know, catamarans offer numerous benefits , many of which are obvious when it comes to solar power yachts. Only catamarans are able to easily carry a large area of ​​solar panels, which do not become something foreign in terms of design, but are simply integrated into the horizontal elements of the hull and superstructures.

Guy Marshal, the founder of Symphony Marine, who has vast experience in creating and developing technological know-how with high-profile brands such as BMW, Renault, Toyota, Oceanco, Vegayachts, KuschYachts, Burger Boat and Maiora, has supported the trend in the development of electric yachts, in which catamarans are a natural and logical solution to achieve maximum efficiency and comfort.

For help in creating a new line of yachts, Guy Marshal turned to the Berret-Racoupeau Design studio, for which the design of marine architecture and interiors of catamarans is one of the core areas.

The Whisper Yachts 50 is a perfect example of what a modern family cruising electric cat should look like, affordably priced yet offering incredible comfort comparable to the luxury and space of a superyacht.

At first glance, it becomes obvious that this catamaran is ideal for southern latitudes. Circular glazing, sliding doors and windows, plenty of relaxation areas, a full-width bathing platform and the very spacious master cabin are all important nuances in a hot climate. Which, of course, does not in the least prevent you from going to explore higher latitudes.

We also like the design of the catamaran itself, which, admittedly, is quite rare. In the case of Whisper Yachts, it can be argued that the yacht is really beautiful and stylish. All elements look great, including the flybridge and awnings with solar panels.

And, of course, it should be noted the ease of movement around the cockpit and saloon, which is facilitated by wide aisles and a smooth level difference. The 15-meter catamaran, which has a width of 6.6 meters, makes you feel comfortable and safe even during a long stay on board in blue water.

What about the technical part? Well, in the basic configuration, we have two electric motors of 100 kW each, which can be temporarily increased to 120 kW. The entire system runs on Torqeedo’s Deep Blue and is powered by 200 kWh BMW batteries. All this speaks of high reliability and performance.

The cruising range at a speed of 5-6 knots is not limited. With an increase in speed to 8-9 knots, the battery charge will last for 5 hours. If you want to sail even faster, you can use a 25 kW generator. Then the speed will reach 10 knots.

Whisper 50, a high-end showcase to promote the electric catamaran

The Whisper 50 is the first model of a new brand of electrically powered catamarans. Designed by Berret-Racoupeau, it offers the comfort and silence of electric propulsion, combined with the most luxurious layout.

A new range of catamarans with electric motors

Guy Marchal is the head of Symphony Marine, a company he created in 2019 after several years of experience in prestigious superyacht yards, such as Oceanco. Today, he works in the construction of megayachts over 60 m and launches in parallel a range of catamarans with electric motors, Whisper Yachts .

The first model, the Whisper 50, has a total length of 15 meters. Its modern and elegant design is by Berret-Racoupeau.

"The catamaran is an ideal platform for electric propulsion. Its hulls offer much less resistance in the water than a monohull. It is also a guarantee of comfort, thanks to its stability and its living space. Finally, it also offers a large exterior surface to accommodate solar panels explains Guy Marchal.

"Electric propulsion: propulsion of the future

If he has chosen electric propulsion for his range - a 40-foot and a 60-foot are under consideration - it is because he is convinced of the future of electric propulsion in boating.

"I have been observing electric technology for 8 years now. It offers ecological, comfort and maintenance advantages. When sailing, the silence of electric propulsion is incredible. The torque is immediate, so you can sail very comfortably at 6 knots, as well as at 12 knots and reach a maximum speed of 18 knots if you want. With a combustion engine, you have to respect the engine speeds, whereas the electric motor is efficient at all speeds. I definitely think that this is the propulsion of most of the boats of the future explains Guy Marchal.

The Whisper 50 is equipped with two 100 kW Deep Blue motors from Torqeedo, powered by a 200 kWh BMW battery pack. It is possible to boost the power to 2x120 kW to reach 18 knots in a short period of time. 30 m 2 solar panels producing 6 kW provide the necessary energy, in addition to a 13.2 kW shore power outlet and a 25 kW back-up generator.

According to the shipyard, the autonomy is unlimited at a speed of 5 to 6 knots, the recharge being ensured by the solar panels only. Between 8 to 9 knots, the autonomy increases to 5 hours, always without CO2 emission.

The Whisper 50 offers an autonomy of 8 to 10 hours at a speed of 9 to 10 knots with the 25 kW generator. Finally, at a maximum speed of 18 knots, the autonomy is one hour maximum, still with the generator. A speed that we will privilege in case of emergency.

A luxurious semi-custom layout

In terms of layout, the Whisper 50 has a large cockpit with a sunbathing area over the swim platform. The cockpit space is protected by a rigid roof that can be completely closed by insulating glass if necessary and extends the space of the interior lounge. Two lateral meridian seats invite you to relax. The total surface of the main deck is 35 m2. There are also sunbeds and sofas on the flybridge and the forward cockpit. The hulls can accommodate between 3 (owner's hull version) and 4 cabins.

Series construction

Made of vinylester and fiberglass with carbon reinforcements to optimize weight, the Whisper 50 will be manufactured in semi-custom series. The owner will be able to choose to customize his boat, especially in terms of decoration and cabin version. Guy Marchal intends to offer a high level of finishing and a production of luxurious quality, close to the environment in which he currently works. Two shipyards are currently being considered to build the range, one in Italy, specialized in the manufacture of luxury yachts and one in France, known for the production of catamarans.

"By proposing a complete range, and in particular a 40-foot model, we want to convince the market of the usefulness and merits of electric propulsion . The more electric boats there are on the water, the more this propulsion will be democratized. Today, many anchorages are polluted and inaccessible. We want to avoid this and offer the possibility to a maximum of people to consider the purchase of an electric boat", concludes Guy Marchal.

A high-end positioning

A possibility that requires a certain budget, however, since with a luxury positioning, the Whisper 50 has a price excluding taxes of 1.4 million euros with many standard features such as the teak platform for example. A first model as well as a virtual visit system will be available in Düsseldorf in January 2022.

The White Formula Whisper is a cutting edge catamaran that has been designed and built in the UK.

Designer Ron Price had the idea to bring an affordable flying catamaran to the world sailing scene. After watching the incredible 2014 Americas Cup upset, Ron decided if he couldn’t get a ride on one he would build his own, he designed the Whisper completely on a computer and modeled it using very sophisticated marine development software.  Six months later he was well on his way to launching his prototype. On day one of testing the Whisper prototype foiled flawlessly for over 4 minutes without dropping off the foils.

The production moulds have now been completed on a 3D 6 axis cnc milling machine, and the first boats have been built and are on the publicity circuit visiting many of the worlds boat shows. The new wing style mainsail shows all the flare of a wing sail with the easy storage of a regular sail.

The boat is made using a cutting edge epoxy / carbon fibre infusion method, fully built in the UK and fitted out in our production facility in Essex, the Whisper comes in at a platform weight of only 78Kg. The advancements in 3D printing  and laser sintering has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years, the recent application of printing Carbon Fibre has allowed us to cut a lot of cost out of manufacturing intricate moving parts. We also computer cut all of the internal parts of the boat using our own 3 axis cnc machine, this means we can incorporate weight saving areas into the structure of the hull, lowering the overall weight.

The Whisper is a one design class, but when it comes to the styling, the sky is the limit. Our customers have had some pretty wacky ideas, so we are looking forward to a pretty interesting start line, coupled with the ability to foil in just 4 knots of wind we could see some “pretty fly styles”.

1st WINGSAIL series production yacht in the world!

The OceanWings32 - by Ayro© - was initially developed for Team Oracle, for the America’s Cup 2010 in Valencia. Over years, it has further been developed and automated by VPLP and was installed on Energy Observer in 2019. Two years of field feedback have allowed the Ayro team to fine tune the algorithm commanding the wingsail. The ZEN50 is the first series production leisure craft to be equipped with this fully automated wingsail. It is controlled at the touch of a finger on screens, is automatically adjusted and has several safety modes and features. The two parts of the wingsail can be hoisted and lowered independently and with the simple touch of a button. The wingsail OceanWings32 is the ideal complement for the solar roof for those wishing to cruise long distances off-shore with zero-emissions.

Greatest ratio SOLAR POWER / weight on the market

At 17 tonnes lightweight and 18,000 W of peak solar power, the ratio of the ZEN50 is at over 1 kW per displaced tonne of water or beyond 1:1 which is far beyond any other blue water CE Cat A yacht in this size range. Lots of solar power for little water to displace is the strong and healthy foundation the energy self-sufficient ZEN50 is built upon.

Performance CARBON sandwich hulls

The hulls of the ZEN50 have been designed from a blank screen for ultimate efficiency - understand minimum drag or minimal energy consumption for a range of speeds from 6 to 10 knots. Their shape is aggressive, sharp and slender. Their reverse bows cut through water like a sword cuts through butter and their curvature is reminiscent of graceful dolphin bodies. These hulls are undoubtedly of the performance type and are built with the best available composites: Carbon fibre and Corecell™. The combination of high strength, low weight and performance design allow the ZEN50 to reach speeds of up to 14 knots.

INFINITE range at high CONTINUOUS speeds

True ZERO-EMISSION operation

The first ZEN50 unit, whose construction started in March 2023, will not be equipped with a genset at all and will not have any fossil fuels onboard. It is perfectly safe with no backup genset and operates 24/7 without any polluting emissions.

The main electrical architecture is split in 2 so that should anything happen on 1 hull, the entire vessel can still operate normally. Whisper Yachts has selected the best profile/length/width/draft ratio to optimize the hull's performance in the water with minimal resistance. The aft part of the hull is raised to promote horizontal action of the propellers without compromising on draft.

The materials used in the construction of the hulls and superstructures have received meticulous attention. Whisper Yachts and Berret-Racoupeau Design have chosen the most advanced composite techniques to ensure the perfect balance between comfort and lightweight construction.
