A Closer Look at the $320 Million Superyacht "Radiant"
In the world of superyachts, one of the most expensive and lavish ships in the world is the Radiant. As of 2018, it was the sixth most expensive yacht in the world and it's one that is boardable by invitation only. If you're as intrigued as we are about this floating luxury vessel, here are the details about what makes the Radiant so highly valued .
The history of the Radiant
The Radiant was originally built as a commissioned vessel ordered by Boris Berezovsky, who is a Russian media magnate. His intention was to have a superyacht built that would outshine the yacht owned by his enemy Roman Abramovich, who was the owner of the Pelorus. This gives us the back story that inspired the specifications of the luxury yacht that was intended to be one of the most glorious yachts to float the seas. The construction code name for the yacht was Darius with the first name to replace the code name as Radiant. The naval architect and builder of the ship is the German shipbuilder Lurssen, and she was launched in 2009 under the Cayman Islands flag . The Radiant was sold by Berezovsky to its current owner, Abdulla Al Futtaim. He hails from the United Arab Emirates and made billions of dollars in the car dealership industry.
Specifications of the Radiant
The Radiant was built with an aluminum superstructure and a strong steel hull. The total length is 360 feet and 10 inches which qualifies it as a superyacht. the beam is 53 ft and 5 inches and the draft is 14 ft 9 inches. The deck material is teak wood. The exterior of the Radiant was designed by Tim Heywood with the intention of making the beam large to provide for an ultra spacious luxury interior. The interior design is provided by Glen pushelberg of Terence Disdale Design. The ship launched in April of 2009 and was delivered to its Russian owner in 2010.
Power of this motor yacht
The tonnage of the Radiant is 5027 tonnes. She is powered by an 8715 horsepower MTU, 16 V 1163 TB73L diesel engine. The maximum speed of the ship is 21 knots. She is also equipped with zero speed stabilizers for the ultimate in guest comfort when the ship is docked, even in rough seas.
The amenities and equipment of the Radiant
We attempted to discover how many cabins were built into the Radiant, but this information is not readily available. It is our assumption that the configuration of the interior may have changed from one owner to another as it is standard practice to make changes to suit the personal tastes and preferences when it changes hands. When it comes to passenger capacity, the Radiant has accepted between 16 to 20 guests aboard. We also assume that there is a crew size of approximately 44 hands for the daily maintenance and operational needs of a craft this size. What we do know is that there are some sweet amenities on board. The Radiant features a helipad so guests and VIPs can easily gain access or leave the vessel, and this also comes in handy in the event of a medical emergency. There is also a cinema for the entertainment of guests, a gymnasium, a spa and jacuzzi for relaxation and a garage to store the tenders. There is also a swimming platform, swimming pools, a beach club, air conditioning and a massage room on board.
Safety equipment
The Radiant is equipped with a state of the art personal protection and security system that is unlike most other defense systems. The comprehensive system includes a barrage of sonic guns that have the capacity to burst the eardrums of any unwelcomed guests such as hijackers or other types of attackers. The yacht is also armed with a series of water cannons that can hurl jets of water that could sink a smaller boat form up to 100 yards from the vessel. A special escape pod has been designed with a speedboat to carry the occupants of the boat to safety if all other measures of protection and security fail. (www.businessinsider.com/most-expensive-yachts-2014-9#6-radiant-is-worth-320-million-5). These safety and protection measures were instituted at the insistence of Berezovsky and the speedboat can reach 75 knots or better. The man who commissioned the building of the Radiant was taking no chances when it came to his personal safety and that of his guests.
Final thoughts
The Radiant remains one of the most expensive and lavish luxury yachts in the world today. It's the sister of the Dilbar, another highly ranking vessel in the collection and the ship was initially built to go one better and deliver a yacht which was superior to the yacht of the commissioning owner's rival, which was the Pelorus. One-upmanship was the passion that was behind the design and ultimate building of this $320 million dollar superyacht, which commands the attention of onlookers at whatever port it is docked. If you're fortunate enough to be one of the invited guests out of the 16 or 20 the ship is intended to accommodate, you will be aboard one of the safest and most secure yacht on the seas and there are a couple of different ways for you to escape if an emergency takes place. From the teak decks to the lavish design features of the interior of this seaworthy paradise, the Radiant is among the most expensive and admired vessels in the world today. Of course, both owners just happen to be billionaires several times over, but it's nice, sometimes, to see how the other half lives.

RADIANT Yacht – Masterful $300M Superyacht
Delivered to her owner, businessman from the United Arab Emirates, in 2009, RADIANT yacht is a 110-metre (260.1 ft) luxury yacht.
She is currently the 38th largest yacht in the world, closely followed by KAOS, AL RAYA and ANNA, who have the same lengths.
RADIANT yacht interior
The interior of the RADIANT yacht was designed by Glen Pushelberg, who co-founded the high-profile studio Yabu Pushelberg.
Their portfolio mainly consists of boutiques and expensive hotels, although they have worked on several luxury yachts in recent years.
The interior layout and design of RADIANT have been kept a secret from the public although it is rumored to be very modern and tasteful with contemporary design choices rather than traditional.
The yacht can welcome twenty guests in ten cabins as well as 44 crew members. She has a cinema, an indoor pool, elevators, and a spa onboard.
Specifications
RADIANT was built by Luerssen at their Lemwerder shipyard in Germany. She was delivered in late 2009 and conducted her maiden voyage in February 2010.
RADIANT has a total length of 110 meters (260.1 ft), a beam of 16.3 meters (53.6 ft), and a draft of 4.68 meters (15.4 ft).
Her weight lies at 5,082 tons, making her a relatively heavy yacht. Her average cruising speed is 16 knots, although she can accelerate to a top speed of 22 knots if required using her twin diesel MTU engines .
Her water tanks can carry up to 100,000 liters of freshwater allowing her to take guests on longer trips.
Tim Heywood and his renowned design studio worked on the exterior of RADIANT in collaboration with Luerssen.
The British designer specializes in large vessels and has worked on yachts like DILBAR and PELROUS in the past. RADIANT is one of his most notable design projects.
She has a somewhat unconventional exterior which isn’t all-white like most superyachts but features a light grey lower half. She has a helipad on the top deck, although it can only support smaller aircraft.
The bow, which is usually where a helipad would be placed on a large yacht, is instead a spacious sun deck with storage facilities for smaller tenders and water toys such as jet skis. The aft of the vessel has several decks with comfortable seating areas.
The RADIANT yacht was sold to the owner for an estimated price of US $300 million. She generates an additional US $20 to $30 million in annual running costs.

A sister to Al Raya, Radiant was commissioned by the Russian media tycoon Boris Berezovsky, who wanted a rival to Pelorus, owned by his arch enemy Roman Abramovich. However, he subsequently sold her to Abdulla al-Futtaim, a billionaire car dealer from the United Arab Emirates, before she was completed. As well as the standard features for a yacht of this size - helipad, gymnasium, cinema, spa - she has one of the highest security specifications ever conceived. Berezovsky ordered a personal “escape launch” – a speedboat with turbo-charged twin diesel engines capable of exceeding 75 knots. She is also equipped with an arsenal of sonic guns that fire low-frequency sound waves that can burst the eardrums of approaching assailants, and a military water cannon capable of sinking an approaching boat at more than 100 yards.

The 8 Most Expensive Yacht Purchases Of All Time
No billionaire is complete without a superyacht of his or her own. In fact, a November report from Wealth-X and the UBS Global Billionaire Census found that the average billionaire spends $22 million on yachts.
The latest study from Wealth-X ranks the most expensive luxury asset acquisitions of all time, and it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that eight of the top ten purchases were yachts.
Wealth-X uses a proprietary valuation model to assess all asset holdings including privately and publicly held businesses and investible assets to develop their Net Worth Valuation.
Here, in reverse order, are the 8 most expensive yacht purchases of all time.
8. Dilbar, $263 million
Alisher Usmanov, Russia's wealthiest man, bought this 360-foot superyacht for $263 million in 2012. Dilbar, named after the billionaire's mother, has accommodations for 20 guests and up to 47 crew members, in addition to a helicopter pad, swimming pool, and swanky formal dining room.
7. Radiant, $286 million
Originally commissioned by Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky, this 360-foot yacht was sold to Abdulla Al Futtaim, a billionaire car dealer from the United Arab Emirates. Radiant's amenities put a James Bond twist on the typical superyacht experience. It's equipped with sonic guns that would burst the eardrums of attackers, along with water cannons that could sink an approaching boat from 100 yards away. There's even a smaller speedboat designed specifically for a quick escape.
5. (tie) Pelorus, $300 million
Music mogul David Geffen purchased Pelorus from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in May 2011. Since one helicopter pad just isn't enough, this superyacht has two, in addition to two swimming pools and a collection of smaller boats on the tender deck. One guest suite has a wall that lowers to transform into an ultra-private veranda.
5. (tie) Dubai, $300 million
The Dubai, which currently belongs to Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Sheikh of the emirate of Dubai, was the most expensive yacht in the wold when it was built by Blohm + Voss in 2006. At 524 feet, it's the third-largest private yacht in the world, and it boasts seven decks, a squash room, helicopter pad, and even a small submarine.
4. A, $323 million
This elegant, Philippe Starck-designed superyacht belongs to Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko. Among its luxurious amenities are bath faucets worth $40,000, staircase banisters worth $60,000, and a bed that rotates with the touch of a button, allowing for perfect views of the sunrise and sunset. A has had its fair share of controversies, however, as the Melnichenkos are currently suing Dutch paint corporation Akzo Nobel, claiming the yacht's paint is not as reflective as they had requested.
3. Serene, $330 million
Russian vodka distributor Yuri Scheffler owns this 440-foot yacht, which has turquoise neon lights that give it a nighttime glow. It has a combined 48,000 square feet of covered space on its seven decks, including indoor and outdoor pools, 12 staterooms, and an outdoor screening room. Scheffler purchased the Italian-designed yacht for $330 million in 2011.
2. Eclipse, $485 million
Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich purchased the 536-foot-long Eclipse in 2010, when it still held the title for world's largest yacht. Eclipse has two helipads , a disco, cinema, hair salon, and restaurant, plus it's rumored to have a laser defense system against paparazzi trying to photograph high-profile guests.
1. Azzam, $627 million
The largest and most expensive yacht in the world is a staggering 590 feet long (longer than some commercial cruise ships) and owned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates. It took German shipbuilders Lürssen Yachts four years to build this behemoth of a ship, which is rumored to have up to 50 private suites. According to Wealth-X, the $627 million purchase was only about 3.5% of Sheikh Khalif's net worth of $17.9 billion.
BONUS: The Other Two Most Expensive Purchases Of All Time
There have been two other luxury purchases in the range of these superyachts. They were:
- Russian tycoon Dmitry Rybolovlev's Monaco home , which set him back $286 million. It tied for eighth with Abdulla Al Futtaim's Radiant yacht.
- At $500 million, Larry Ellison's purchase of Hawaiian island Lanai was the second largest luxury asset acquisition of all time.

110m Motor Yacht Radiant to Arrive in Norway
By B. Roberts
Motor Yacht Radiant, the 110m Lürssen yacht, is on its way to Kristiansand, Norway as reported by Norwegian newspaper fvn.no. It is not known how long M/Y Radiant will be in the region, but it is apparent that the south coast of Norway is becoming the new testing ground for some of the world’s largest yachts.
According to Norwegian newspaper fvn.no, mega yacht Radiant is expected to reach Kristiansand in early May. M/Y Radiant was built in 2009 under the project name ‘Darius’ and was delivered to her new owner in February 2010. The mega yacht was designed by Tim Heywood to sport a powerful and sophisticated exterior, making her one of the most impressive yachts on the water. Radiant also offers a spacious and stylish interior designed by Glen Pushelburg.
The 110m motor yacht Radiant is reported to have been designed to rival M/Y Pelorus , the 115m mega yacht once owned by Roman Abramovich. M/Y Pelorus, also built to a Tim Heywood design, is deemed to be one of the most beautiful yachts on the water. The mega yacht was voted by the world's leading designers to be the 2nd most beautiful yacht - ever. The striking M/Y Radiant's exterior profile bears similarities to Pelorus and has been coined by British newspapers as one of the most expensive and safest yachts ever built.
M/Y Radiant holds state-of-the-art equipment and accommodates 16 people onboard. The luxury mega yacht features a helipad, gym, cinema and two swimming pools. M/Y Radiant can also match her levels of comfort and luxury with her almost militaristic safety. The mega yacht is even reported to hold a high-power water cannon that can lower a boat from 100m away.
The reason for M/Y Radiant's visit to the south coast of Norway is unknown as of yet. However, several other large superyachts are venturing to the area, which offers spacious and scenic waters to cruise and test a new yacht in preparation for delivery. Roman Abramovich travelled to Kristiansand in order to take delivery of the 115m M/Y Luna , whilst the world's largest yacht, M/Y Eclipse is widely expected to visit the area before the 2010 South African World Cup.

As a real estate team, we know that we are only as good as our resources, and that's why we have been working with LaChance Radiant Heating for years. We can confidently say that they are one of the best radiant heating service providers in the business. Michael LaChance and his team are true professionals who are passionate about what they do. Their expertise in radiant heating systems is second to none, and they consistently deliver outstanding results. We have worked with them on countless projects, and the feedback from our clients is always positive. If you want a radian heating service provider that is trustworthy, skilled, and committed to customer satisfaction. I would recommend reaching out to LaChance.
Recently had LaChance put in a tankless system to cover both hot water heating and radiant heating. Worst part was waiting 1 month or so for the install, but that was similar for all companies. Easy to communicate with those office. After downpay, they helped drop off (their office manager drove them to our place) some space heaters, as our old 1964 boiler died. The space heaters helped a lot while waiting for installation day. Install took 2 days. Dale and his colleague (forgot his name sorry) worked hard to take out the old boiler, get most all the piping set on day 1, leaving our water heater active so we had hot water over night (that was nice). Next day took out the hot water tank and installed the new thermostat in the house. Dale explained the system, main valves, features and checked that the system was heating, see pictures of our floors from his infrared camera. Overall pretty painless and feel they did a real professional job with great service. They really care about their customers. Would hire them again or suggest to friends. BTW-price was very competitive to other companies too.
Professional and efficient. Fixed radiant heating driven by an old boiler. Knows his stuff. Communicates well. Can't go wrong IMO.
He is the best. A plumber from AHS wasted us more than one year to try to install our dual heating system correctly, failed. Mr. LaChance, referred by my friend, spend a couple of days to make it work nicely.
5 Gold stars. Highly recommend this team. Woke up this morning and my Eichler home was at 52F, the boiler (AOSmith pool heater) was no longer heating. Called a number of service organizations and was quoted up to $20,000 for a replacement system, many did not want to touch a radiant system. Mike and son fitted me in two days later, came an ascertained that I only needed a major tune up, cleaning. Within 2 hours they completed the work and my heating system was working again at a cost of less than 2% of the highest quote new system installation, done in 2 hours versus 20. Can't recommend this team enough.

Thank you so much for your kind words! Glad we were able to help you out
The owner Mike came to repair my boiler today. I would like to rate his service 7-star! The previous company I hired to clean the boiler did a very bad job. They did not even connect the condensation line after they put back the boiler. Therefore, the boiler had been running for over two years without a condensation line! The water dripped onto the wood floor and made the floor underneath the boiler become rotten badly. Today Mike fixed the problem by connecting a new condensation line even though it was a tough job as he needed to crawl in the cross base to do it. He also fixed some pipe connection mistakes made by the initial installer of the system. He then replaced some broken parts and clean the boiler. Now the boiler works very well. Surprisingly, the bad smell in the garage is gone! I now figured out the smell must be from the unconnected condensation line area as someone else told me there might be some gas omitting from that hole...... Now we have very fresh air in the garage and the boiler works normally and quietly again. I am so happy !!
Mike is absolutely the best in the business. I was assigned two plumbers from America Home Shields to fix the newly installed tankless water heater and the radiant heating system. The installation by the first plumber is bad and cause leaking and water flooding to my floor and driveway. The second one is even worse, the technician suggested a $5000+ work list to fix the problem. I decided to find a quality five star plumber and referred my builder friend to Mike LaChance. He is such a knowedgable and nice guy, quickly found the root of the problem and fixed it. The total cost is only $1020. Thank you so much Mike and your lovely wife for your help.

Our Eichler was freezing and we called LaChance thinking that we would have to make an appointment for a week or so out. However, the woman who answered the phone was exceptionally nice and said they would be out the very next day. They did what they said they would do, came out the next day, fixed everything so that our home was warm that night. They are exceptionally professional, friendly and talented and I would highly recommend them to anyone who needs Radiant Heat servicing or repair.

Video shows stolen yacht crashing into multiple other boats in California
A boat thief swiped a yacht in Southern California on Thursday, authorities said, then collided with multiple other boats in the harbor.
Joel Siam, 38, was booked on suspicion of grand theft of a boat and possession of a stolen boat and was being being held on $3 million bail, Orange County jail records showed on Friday.
Dispatchers on Thursday had originally been notified at 9:21 a.m. PST about an act of vandalism along the docks near 1200 W. Coast Highway before another call came, reporting a stolen boat a half-mile away, Newport Beach police spokeswoman Heather Rangel said.
"It was determined that the suspect was the same person for each incident," Rangel said. "The suspect stole the boat and proceeded to leave the area when he collided with multiple boats in the bay."
The suspect, from San Diego, was captured by the Orange County Sheriff's Harbor Patrol, police said.
Siam struck at least three vessels and investigators didn't have an immediate price tag on the damage, sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Braun said Friday.
It wasn’t immediately clear what the suspect’s motive might have been.
“We do not believe the suspect knew the boat owner,” of the craft he allegedly stole, Braun added.
As Siam first started operating the luxury vessel, it caught the attention of real estate broker Dylan Eckardt, who was at his new office right on the docks.
“That was crazy,” Eckardt told NBC News on Friday. “I was on the phone and I heard the boat back out and when the boat backed out I started videoing.”
Eckardt, who grew upon the far east end of Long Island, initially believed there was a mechanical problem with the yacht.
“I grew up on Montauk, I know a lot about boats and I was like, ‘What the hell was going on?’ I thought the engine was stuck, like the throttle (was stuck),” he said. “Then I saw the guy up top taking his shirt off, I knew there was a situation.”
Siam is due to appear in court on Monday, jail records showed. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had hired an attorney been assigned one by Friday, a spokeswoman for the Orange County DA said.

A California philanthropist allegedly threatened to kill a dock worker during a heated argument from his multimillion-dollar yacht, before dropping his pants and making several threatening gestures to the employee.
Ajay Thakore, a local entrepreneur in the San Diego area, attempted to dock his Lamborghini yacht at the private Marriot Marquis Marina to pick up one of his employees but was stopped by worker Joseph Holt on Sunday.
“I told him respectfully that he couldn’t be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat,” Holt told CBS8. “But yeah, it completely went the other way.”
Thakore, who goes by his social media name, Ace Rogers, was riding on his rare $4.5 million Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht at the time of the daytime dispute.
Holt claimed Thakore became hostile as soon as he was told off.
“It escalated immediately. It was 0 to 100 immediately,” the 21-year-old worker added.
Thakore, the CEO of medical advertising firm Doctor Multimedia, allegedly began to threaten Holt’s life as the luxury speedboat drove away from the docks.
“I will kill you, you know I will kill you, I will kill,” Thakore repeatedly yells, according to the video posted to YouTube.
Besides threatening to take Holt’s life, Thakore claimed to have the power to get the dock worker fired, ripping on the type of job he had.
“I’m a minimum wage worker, he was commenting on that, on my status just because of my job,” Holt said. “He was saying I’m nobody, I’m nothing, I work a silly job.”
“He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it,” he added.
During the heated discussion, Thakore allegedly pulled out his wallet and began throwing $100 bills at Holt and into the water, according to the outlet.
Holt said he tried to control himself during the incident and only gave Thakore the middle finger.
“I really didn’t know how to process it. I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird,” he said.
The dock hand blasted Thakore for his actions, especially in a public setting where he stripped nude and showed himself off.
“He had dropped his pants and started to make gestures to everybody watching and me. You can’t act that way in public. It’s just not OK. Especially threatening my life, at the very least. There were women and children there. That’s the most important part,” Holt said.
Thakore claims his outburst started because of a misunderstanding and was sorry for the people who saw it.
“The interaction that occurred yesterday was regrettable. What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange,” Thakore’s public relations team said in a statement, obtained by KFMB.
Port of San Diego Harbor Police were called to the Seaforth Boat rental dock for “a possible intoxicated vessel operator” but arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore and his boat had left.
The employee who attempted to board the extravagant boat defended his boss’s actions, saying Holt was hostile toward Thakore, and the businessman was only defending his team.
“As I went to kindly step onto the Yacht, I was impeded by two members that work for Seaforth Boat Rental,” Thakore’s employee Jason said on a post to the CEO’s Instagram account.
Jason said he was told to “stand back” the first time he went to step on the boat, and claimed he was forearmed during his second attempt to board the yacht.
“They physically got in my way, the situation became fairly tense, there was a lot of screaming back and forth, extremely confrontational, I didn’t fully understand protocol, as I was going to step onto the boat.”
“As all of this happened, my boss flipped and he’s very protective of me, his fiancée, of his employees.” Jason added. “It was a confusing situation that became very tense and very confrontational.”
Thakore captioned the post saying “there are two sides to every story and it’s easy to paint a picture with edited video clips from cell phones.”
“My employee Jason was being restricted, restrained, and threatened while trying to board my yacht. As a leader, I defend my own fiercely with everything I have, and I will never apologize for that,” the caption read.
