Welcome to the Bremerton Yacht Club
The Bremerton Yacht Club, located on Phinney Bay, was founded in 1929 and celebrated 90 years on May 25, 2019. The Bremerton Yacht Club is a year round, private club dedicated to our member’s enjoyment through excellence in boating, facilities, services and social activities. Our mission is to promote camaraderie and enrich shared experiences among our members, their families and friends through nautical activities, social events and education. We take pride in our reputation as a warm, outgoing, multi-generational family club that welcomes diversity among members of high character, believing these are valuable dimensions of the fellowship we share with one another. An important responsibility of membership, which we individually and collectively embrace, is our commitment to protect and preserve our longstanding traditions, our facilities and marina, and the environmental integrity of our waterways for the benefit of present and future generations. We want our club facility and grounds to be a relaxing nautical environment which accommodates all members with ease to facilitate maximum member interaction. The simple essence of BYC is members enjoying their families and friends through their common love of boating and water-related activities.

The Balboa Yacht Club kicked off its centennial Saturday night during its annual installation of new officers and end-of-year meeting, with 200 members enjoying dinner and fireworks at what Centennial Committee chair Stacie Brandt said would be the first of many upcoming celebrations.
“We have all-year events,” said Brandt. “There’s a lunch in March, a ball in April and a regatta in August.”
According to Brandt, a group of men from the Newport Harbor Yacht Club who wanted to focus more on small-boat sailing in 1922 founded the Southland Sailing Club, which became the Balboa Yacht Club in 1928.
With its prime location near the entrance to the Newport Harbor on Bayside Drive in Corona del Mar, the club sits directly across the water from the second clubhouse on Little Balboa Island. “They found a beach cottage on the [Balboa] Peninsula, which was their first clubhouse,” said Brandt. “Their second clubhouse, between 1926 and 1941, was on the [southeast] tip of Little Balboa Island until their lease ran out, and they built the current club in 1941.”
Many of the attendees at the event had positive things to say about their club memberships, some of which extend back decades.
Russell Miller, who had worked at Balboa Yacht Club as the food and beverage manager from 2008 until 2014, said he felt lucky to come back as the club’s general manager in 2019.
“It is immensely satisfying to me that I get to celebrate the club’s centennial year with the people who, outside of my family, mean the most to me in my life,” said Miller. “BYC is truly an exceptional club filled with exceptional people.”
Morrie Kirk, who has been boating since he was 3 years old and has been an active member of the club since 1969, is the senior staff commodore and oldest staff commodore. He was commodore in 1977.
“The biggest change is in the city and how much it’s grown,” said Kirk. “The club is very much the same, we’re a boating club, friendly, family-oriented club, same location since 1941.”
Kirk explained that the club was originally all sailing, and today there are more powerboats than sailboats. The current membership of 600 has changed over the years due to attrition, but the club still has 50 members who joined the club more than 50 years ago.
On Saturday, Kirk was selected by the incoming commodore, Paul Blank, to be the “installing officer” to relieve the current board of responsibilities and introduce the new commodore.
“I chose him because he’s a great man, a good friend, has contributed greatly to BYC through several decades and has the most seniority among the staff commodores,” Blank said.
Blank, a Corona del Mar resident and the Newport Harbormaster, has been a member of the club for 37 years. “The location is excellent, friendship built from shared passion on the water activities that I have not found at other clubs,” he said. “The camaraderie, support, improved seamanship, adventures near and far, small and large, all trying to make each other better.”
While boating innovation has changed over the last 100 years, the shared passion for water activities among members remains consistent.
Blank has seen changes in manufactured-boating styles and opportunities for boating innovation, such as speed and vessel foiling, like hydrofoil sailboats flying out of water. “Boating has changed, style, availability and increased variety,” said Blank. “What has remained consistent is the passion for getting out on the water no matter what the vessel is.”
A burnished wood plaque from 1926 that hangs today over the present club’s dining room fireplace reflects that attitude. The first commodore, Isaac B. Potter, originally donated the plaque, which includes a quote from 20th U.S. President James A. Garfield that calls for gutsiness, courage and determination to meet danger or difficulty: “A pound of pluck is worth a ton of luck.”

Portrait of the Bayerischer Yacht-Club
Almost every weekend during the yachting season from April until October there a different race series for the current boat classes. National and international sailing pros alike race on the lake for points, trophies, ranking lists and for honor, as well. And of course, simply for the fun of it.
The traditional classes have been modernized in the meantime and also compete in the race boat against boat. The club organizes racing series with trained, professional personnel, who introduce the young and those young at heart to the regatta sport. We put a major emphasis on our youth section and produce racing champions year after year. Our club members can be found on ships and all regatta tracks in Europe sailing under the BYC flag.
Which is why our club is well connected, nationally as well as internationally. The neighboring clubs on Lake Starnberg, Ammersee and Chiemsee and other major clubs on the Mediterranean coast, the Baltic and the North Sea and different sailing waters do not only share their common passion for the sailing, but also exchange their sports-political and sociopolitical views. Members of BYC can be found on many national and international committees, where they help establish racing regulations and participate in major nation-wide projects (such as the America’s cup).
The Bayerische Yacht-Club is located—undoubtedly—at one of the most beautiful places at Lake Starnberg: At the north end of the lake, situated in an extensive area which seems to belong to a different period in time with its historical wooden buildings, but where one also find modernity and open-mindedness.
At the harbor and close-by on land you will find the fastest race and sail yachts of our time. They are technically trimmed for speed and built with the high-tech. In front of the club casino (built in 2004), starting from the balconies of the royal house (built in 1997) which has won several architecture prizes with its maritime-inspired berths, over the moles and bridges and the old starter house, which is a distinctive landmark of BYC, the visitor glances south.
On beautiful days, not only when the warm Föhn winds are blowing, you can see the Alps with all their color shading, blue, blue-grey, green and white. The striking silhouettes of the Zugspitze and the Wendelstein mountain range loom massively into the sky, sometimes seemingly within one’s reach. Despite the fact that mountains are about 75 km to the south.
The Bayerische Yacht-Club was founded under a different name and on a truly remarkable date: August 8, 1888 (8-18-1888). It was not even launched at the location where it can be found today: the club was founded in a small lake pavilion in the Tutzing bay and then moved to its final location only a couple of weeks later at the north end of Lake Starnberg.
The noble foundation members, mainly from Munich and members of the distinguished part of society, named the club „Segler-Verein Würmsee“ (sailing club Würmsee). Lake Starnberg was still called Würmsee at that point in time. Chroniclers claim today that the name, location and date had been planned for a period of time. The founding fathers supposedly operated on a sports-political scale in the late months of 1888, and provided the yachting club Würmsee with the club house in Bucantur Hall, now under landmark protection status (year erected 1803), on the domain of the electoral fleet, which was stationed there in the 17 th century.
The sailing pioneers also immediately tried to establish contact with the Bavarian royal house Wittelsbach. The young prince Ludwig (born 1845) loved sailing on Lake Starnberg. He also participated in the first sailing squadron of the young club on June 30, 1889, with his sword jolly-boat. And later on, in 1911, he beautifully named the club the „Königlich Bayerischer Yacht-Club“ (KBYC). At that point, the prince was already His Royal Majesty King Ludwig III. of Bavaria, protector of the club (1889-1909) and commodore (1909-1921).
The common history of the Bavarian royal house and the Bavarian club was not at all coming to an end: over centuries princes and princesses raced side by side with the bourgeois club members, up until today and very successfully. This is well documented in several club chronicles.

BYC today. The Bayerische Yacht-Clubs is often referred to as a club of the superlative. There are more than 950 members, 200 of which are ambitious and successful adolescents and sailing juniors (14-25 years of age), organized in a separate entity, the traditional club (JJA). This makes the BYC the biggest yacht club in Southern Germany.
