DUES: Quarterly dues are $110. There is an assessment of $99 per quarter for a moored member or $42 for a non-moored member. This assessment is for a Capital Investment Reserve Fund. Moored members also pay $38 per quarter into a DNR Piling Replacement Fund, and $12 per quarter for garbage collection.
There are three types of moorage at the club.
1) Side tie (finger pier) is $6.492 per linear foot per quarter. This is based on the size of the slip, not the length of the boat. Open slips are up to 72 feet. 2) Boat House slips are billed at $ 0.38 per sq. foot per quarter. Boathouse slips – length 47′, 52′, 60′, 62′, 65′. Width varies. 3) Common Cover slips are billed at $0.668 per square foot per quarter. Common Cover slips are all 50′ feet long x 16 feet wide, so the quarterly cost is $534.40. Common Cover slips have 22 feet of vertical clearance
Electricity is paid per KWH used. The current rate is $0.12/KWH). Moored members pay a $12 per quarter electricity surcharge.
WORK PARTIES:
For maintenance and recreational support, we are a 100% volunteer club. You must work 8 to 16 hours per year or pay $100 per hour for the hours not worked. If you are moored at the club the requirement is 16 hours a year, 8 hours are required if you are not moored.
Moorage is assigned by seniority. Depending on your boat, you can expect to qualify for moorage in about 12 months or less. You can sublet an available space and earn additional seniority credits. There are commercial marinas in the area where you could keep your boat while waiting for club moorage.
SOCIAL EVENTS:
We have many club-sponsored events on and off the water. Participation is encouraged, always enjoyable but not mandatory. Social events range from weekend excursions to races to crab and steak feeds to formal and informal parties.
RECIPROCAL MOORAGE: As a member of POYC you will be eligible for reciprocal moorage at most yacht clubs in Puget Sound and British Columbia.

Making Our Yacht Clubs Essential
By Gary Jobson
Updated: June 8, 2005
Over the winter I had a chance to visit 43 yacht clubs, often while lecturing. At every stop, talking with flag officers, junior sailors, managers, and active volunteers, I was struck by two things. First, how much everyone involved with a club aims to run their clubs better and, second, their deep curiosity about what other clubs around the country are doing to handle tough issues. What issues? Aging membership, declining participation on the water, growing regulatory restrictions, budget deficits, rising insurance premiums, the need to upgrade facilities, and policy questions like reciprocity or governance. It’s enough to make your head spin; however, I was heartened to see many clubs taking on these and other projects with success. In a speech at the International Sailing Summit last fall, retiring ISAF President Paul Henderson observed that too many clubs are run by “knife and fork” managers who don’t understand that the needs of yacht club members extend beyond the dining room. Henderson’s point is valid, anda club’s board of directors must regularly review the club’s purpose. Their objective should be to make a yacht club essential to its membership and surrounding community. If your club hasn’t evaluated itself against this criteria, a questionnaire is a helpful first step. Interviews of different constituents will give further guidance. Next, your club should develop a long range plan through a process with broad input. Town hall style meetings will help your LRP committee develop a point of view consistent with what members want, and an inclusive process will also make selling the final plan easier. After a mission statement is written and long-term goals are defined, the next stage is to list, in order, your club’s priorities. At this point the LRP committee and finance officers should research the rough cost of these projects. The final plan needs to be presented thoughtfully to build momentum, keeping in mind that many members are passionate about their clubs. Many consider the club to be an extension of their family and home-so expect feedback and be ready to modify the plan as ideas surface. Once you have support from the members who care most, success is more likely. In working with the clubs to which I belong, I’ve seen that this planning process is important and takes time, but it’s not the hardest part. What’s really needed, as well, is critical thinking about your club’s role in sailing and where you should focus the club’s resources so it remains vital and growing. One of the more thoughtful sailors on the East Coast is David Elwell, a past commodore of American YC, in Rye, N.Y., and current rear commodore of the New York YC. Elwell says, “A yacht club needs to interact with its community. Public access is important. An example we’ve emphasized is cooperation with Sail Newport [a public sailing facility in Newport, R.I.], working together on major events and promoting sailing.” After spending considerable time in New Zealand during the last two America’s Cups, Elwell says, “New Zealand does this exceedingly well. Sailing is not elitist there; it’s a public-access sport. We can learn from their example.” Besides helping with the public-access side, clubs should look at their membership policies. Elwell says, “We need to create cost-efficient ways to get on the water. Inexpensive junior memberships are a good way to get young people involved.” Young people often disappear after college for 10 to 15 years. A club-owned fleet allows sailing to take place during periods of a few hours or less. Clubs should work hard to keep this core age group involved, keeping dues low, promoting junior member social activities, and finding innovative ways to get them on the water. Elwell points to the Larchmont YC’s fleet of JY 15s, which form the basis for a popular program of instruction and informal racing that attract many young people. Here are other examples of programs and improvements that leaders across the country have put in motion: Many clubs host high-school sailing teams, which are full of potential future members. In some cases, having teams on site makes it possible to retain sailing instructors on an annual basis to run youth programs. In fact several clubs have hired full-time employees to manage race programs for all members. Their job isn’t to take the place of race committees, but to coordinate activities while providing the energy, expertise, and consistency to develop and improve programs year to year. A major question at many clubs is whether to upgrade or expand the facilities. I encouraged every club to make this a priority when I wrote about it last (“Taking on the Big Club Project,” Sept. ’03-see www.sailingworld.com) Waterfront property is precious and should be utilized to the maximum extent. Clubs should take on these projects sooner rather than later-every club I’ve seen improve its facilities is now thriving. At the same time, keep tradition in mind. Many clubs are more than 100 years old and there’s something special about preserving old clubhouses, while updating them to be safe, comfortable, and efficient to run. Special attention should be paid to improving docks, floats, and moorings. Don’t forget that good communication brings people together. Every club should publish a regularly scheduled newsletter. It’s worth the money to hire an editor to collect information and produce a periodical. Ask members to write articles and print lots of results (people like to see their name in print). And don’t forget to run plenty of pictures. Likewise, websites should be of high quality and regularly updated. Let anyone log on to the site to read about the club’s mission, history, events, and race results. E-mails are an efficient way to promote happenings. Reminders are appreciated. I’ve been intrigued to find several clubs with significant libraries. The San Diego YC, Newport Harbor YC, and New York YC have among the best. You can build inventory by asking members to donate books and magazines. Race results, club records, contemporary readings, and reference books should be included. To be essential, clubs need to take leadership roles. One way is to create a signature regatta that builds pride and stature. An example is the Long Beach YC, in Calif., which hosts the Congressional Cup. Not only is this event one of the most important, longest-running match-race regattas in the world, it also pulls together more than 250 member volunteers. Clubs should also consider being leaders in reaching out to the community to gain water access, participating in meaningful fundraising events, developing handicap rules, and supporting American participation at international events like the Olympic Games. Working with their regional sailing associations and US SAILING, clubs should help manage and build the sport, sharing ideas and views with other clubs. As a side benefit, the more the members of a yacht club reach out to help others through these associations, the more they’ll learn of other clubs’ experiences and the better equipped they’ll be to tackle their own complicated issues. This is all a lot of work for mostly volunteer organizations, but in the long run your local sailing activity will be far better off, and the alternative for your club-as long as the club patrons can support it-is a restaurant with dusty trophies and a water view.

What to consider when choosing a marina, yacht club, or other facility
Whether you’ve just purchased a boat or yacht or have had one for years, where you keep it when you’re not using it is almost as important as the vessel itself. That’s why it’s so essential to do your due diligence before choosing a marina, yacht club, or other facility. Below are a few things to consider.
Reputation.
The boating community is very small and vocal. Ask other boaters or locals what they think about the facility you’re interested in and search online for reviews.
Consider the location of the marina itself, as well as the location of your slip at the marina. Make sure your slip is protected from wind, waves, and vessel traffic. Wave action can do a lot of damage to moored vessels, as can other boats if they don’t have enough room to maneuver. How close is your slip to the open water? If the facility is in an exposed location, do they have wave attenuators installed to protect boats?
Slip length, space, location, and depth.
The more room you have to maneuver, the better. For example, if your boat has a 10’ beam and the marina offers you an 11’ wide slip, it will be challenging to get the boat in and out without contact between the boat and the dock. If your vessel is difficult to maneuver in tight quarters, look for a slip toward the end of the pier. If your vessel has a deeper draft, ensure you can get in and out of the marina and your slip at low tide.
Availability of dock utilities and facilities.
While some marinas may have a lower slip fee, they may not have the facilities to let you pump out your engine head, get gas, or haul out. Here are some features to look for:
Fuel docks with well-maintained above-ground tanks
Consider a facility with Wi-Fi, which can come in handy (you may not need phone and cable TV these days)
Utilities such as water and electricity/shore power are also convenient and important for preventative maintenance
Yard maintenance services.
More sophisticated facilities will offer services, such as:
Spring commissioning, dry storage, and winterizing
Haul-out and drop-in services (with capabilities for hauling large boats). Check to ensure your vessels beam and tonnage can be tolerated by the facility’s lift in the event an emergency haul-out is needed.
The ability sell, service, and repair your engines, and that the work is performed by reputable, well-qualified technicians. This is very important as outboard engines, specifically, have become highly computerized and require authorized, highly trained service technicians to work on the motor.
Pressure washing (available throughout the season)
Gelcoat or fiberglass repairs
Qualified electronic service technicians
Painting, varnish, or bright work
Wash, wax, and detailing
Bottom painting
Yard space for DIY yard service and repair, including access to water and electricity. Check to make sure you can (a) work on your own vessel, and (b) hire your own labor if needed.
Maintenance of the facility.
If the facility doesn’t take care of its buildings and area, how will they care for your boat? If there is trash on the ground, overflowing trash cans, or the docks are in disrepair, consider looking elsewhere. Also consider the safety, stability, and condition of the docks, cleats, and power pedestals when evaluating a marina—premium facilities often have lighted docks.
Storm preparation plans.
Consider asking these questions:
What is their plan should a windstorm or hurricane come through?
What services do they provide, such as haul-out capabilities, to help you protect your watercraft?
Will the boats that are less protected from the open water be moved to different locations of the marina before a storm?
Do you have the proper gear needed to protect your boat (fenders, lines, removing canvas, charged battery for bilge pumps, etc.)
Unfortunately, it is fairly easy for small boats and the equipment inside them to be vulnerable to theft. When considering a marina, look for gates, security cameras, lighting, and security guards. The more security that the facility has, the better.
Availability of life-saving equipment.
Make sure that the facility is equipped with items to help individuals should they be in any life-threatening danger, including CPR equipment, fire extinguishers, life jackets, and egress ladders.
Evaluate the insurance of the facility and any insurance requirement that they might have for you.
Other available services and amenities.
If you’re interested in additional features such as events, dining, clubhouse, or recreational areas, you’ll want to review those amenities when evaluating a marina or yacht club as well. Consider all these factors when choosing your next marina or yacht/boat club, so you can maximize the time you enjoy being at the dock and out on the water.

USCG Limited Masters License
USCG Limited Masters License (also known as USCG Launch Operators License )
The USCG requires all launch operators to be licensed. This 2 day class substitutes for the USCG exam and includes a Safe Boating certificate and USCG applications.
What is the Launch Operator's License?
The Launch Operator's License comes in two versions - uninspected or inspected vessels. To drive certified (inspected) launches, typical of most yacht clubs, the holder must have the "Inspected Operator's License." The renewable license allows you to work at any yacht club or marina and is good for five (5) years. The holder may operate up to 1/2 mile from shore.
What are the USCG requirements?
The primary requirements are:
Age 17 for uninspected launches
Age 18 for inspected launches
120 days underway experience on like vessels (time acquired since age 16)
The USCG has approved the BOATWISE 2 DAY LAUNCH CLASS to substitute for taking their exam. Mid afternoon of the second day of class, the Boatwise test is administered. After successfully passing the 3 sections of our multiple choice exam, they receive a certificate which, with the completed application, may be submitted for either of the launch licenses (the above USCG requirements must also be met). The 1st day of class is a Safe Boating Class.

The result of a wonderful passion for creating ship models is this 1:50 scale model of the 126-metre luxury motor yacht OCTOPUS , which was built by the prestigious German shipyard Lurssen in 2003. Jurgen Goller and Roland Hache constructed the 2,52 metre superyacht OCTOPUS model and presented it for the first time on water this September. Roland Hache also built a model of the motor yacht Lady Lola (see picture at the bottom of the article).

It took two years to build the Octopus Yacht Model and she was built based only on pictures and different photos found on the internet. The two friends had absolutely no access to the general plans, layout drawings or any other designs of the original yacht.

The hull of the Octopus Yacht Model was constructed in GFK and ABS, polyester and wood were used for the rest of the parts. The railing was created using different metal parts.

Weighing 62kg, the model is fitted with 2 Bosch electrical engines and has a lead acid battery of 12 V – 7,5 Ah with a duration of about 4 hours. It has impressive 460 led lights on its five decks, which can be regulated thanks to a dimmer, showing her elegant silhouette when put on water at night.

In addition to all this, Jurgen is planning on adding some special features, such as a music player, smoke generator and sound module to create the appropriate, more realistic, cruising sound.

"The Hartford arrived yesterday: FANTASTIC piece of art!!! I really liked the way it was crated – amazing. Looks great on the mantel. I will be in the market for another one of your ships very soon. Thanks for the excellent work! Mike R." ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞
"I just unpacked my Wanderer and it is beyond my highest hopes. You did a masterful job in recreating this historic whaler! It is the centerpiece of my "man cave" and I'm sure will become a family heirloom. Almost equally amazing was the craftsmanship of the shipping crate. I have to admit, I was a bit worried about how such a large, detailed and delicate model would survive the transport but your custom fitted crate supported and protected it perfectly. Thank you for everything and feel free to post this if you like, Terry" ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞
"Words fail me at the exquisite model y’all produced and delivered. My wife laughed out loud in surprise and delight. She’ll spend the next week deciding where to highlight it in our home. Many thanks, gentlemen! I couldn’t be more pleased. With complete admiration, Ron"

"Hello Frank, The 62" Normandie did arrive yesterday in perfect condition. The model was packed so well I don’t think anything could have really happened to it. Thank You. The ship exceeds all expectations. You and your team are truly fine craftsmen. This is my favorite ship, and I’m so happy I chose Model Ship Masters. Not only is the ship a work of art, but with the lights and being RC, it’s like the Normandie is back alive. Thank you so much. Sincerely, George W."
"I gave a really close look at the photos of the QM2. I am a meticulous person by nature, exacting. The mechanical engineer in me. I just cannot believe the detail on the QM2. I commend you and the craftsmen in your company for your work. I do model railroading and collect ‘exact’ replicas of passenger cars and locomotives. Regards, Paul"

And more than impressed with the packaging for shipment. Just wanted to thank you and your team on a great job and I will cherish this ship always. I may even order another but will definitely order once again from you and your team. Once again thank you so very much. "I cannot thank you and your team enough for the absolutely magnificent liners that your team constructed for me. I am a mechanical engineer by trade in the railroad industry and also collect model trains. I look for authenticity in my models. Your liners are in a class of their own. It's like you built the tugs for yourself--very high standard. The packaging was so good that it's like we needed a bomb squad. They can't move inside the crates... "Just to let you know SS United States model and display case arrived safe and sound. Beautifully packaged. I think it could have withstood a direct nuclear strike. Interestingly flew over the real SS United States rusting in Philadelphia same day I got home to put the model into its display case. Such a pity to see such a great, beautiful ship deteriorate. I have to congratulate you for the outstanding packaging which allowed the model to arrive without a scratch. I am also amazed of your transport and post service that, in the middle of Christmas managed to deliver this big box in my hotel in NY. All this only encourages me to do more things with you during 2010, God willing. I think the MOSHULU would be a good one. By the way, I loved your Reina del Mar replica. "The Normandie arrived last Friday after taking a few days to get through customs. I was so impressed by the way it was packed. It arrived in pristine condition. Please convey my sincere thanks to those involved in making it a masterpiece. The beauty of this ship reinforces my view and those of others that the Normandie is the most beautiful ocean liner ever built. Having been a designer myself this ship represents art, architecture and design so far advanced for the time it was built. Robin, New Zealand" ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞
"You were kind enough to suggest the steps I should follow to unpack it which worked out nicely. I very much appreciated the most secure packaging. I was most fortunate to serve as a substitute Third Mate on the SS United States for four round trip voyages to Northern Europe from NYC (voyages 393, 394, 395 and 396 from July 17, 1969 to September 10, 1069). Your precision and masterful work on the model is truly superb and brings back some terrific memories. Thank you. Regards, Harry 214-718-xxxx"
I, however, am much more future oriented, and very aware of the fact that items of high quality but limited appeal to the general public may not be available in the future....books that aren't on the best seller list, classical music recordings, etc. There is always a niche market for high quality items, but it frequently becomes very expensive. Unfortunately, we live in a culture where it is nearly impossible to go broke making mediocre movies or producing annoying and cloned rap music, but quality, if not priced "competitively", frequently becomes extinct, in the mass market sense...try finding a a good quality toaster or other small appliance at any price.
I fully plan on unveiling all of the acquisitions when we have more space, I hope, in a few years, assuming I don't prematurely expire ( I am 63, but in much better shape than most my age... I should know, I'm a physician ). However, no one's future is assured.
Interestingly enough, my wife inquired today as to whether a friend of hers could bring her grandchildren over to see my ship models, as they seem to have a fascination for sailing ships (probably watched Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean too many times), so I would say that's a positive sign.
Anyway, as usual, I have probably communicated more than you wish to hear. Keep the colors flying and thanks to all your artisans for their greatly appreciated efforts. Scott B."
