Sweden Yacht Charter, Europe

Journey north on a Sweden luxury yacht charter and witness the Northern Lights or the Midnight Sun in awe-striking surroundings. This Nordic holiday destination is a recent magnet for explorer yachts, motor yachts and sailing yachts, who choose Sweden for its compelling history and natural beauty that is just as rich although starkly different to the lifestyle of the Mediterranean.

Sweden is bordered by Finland to the east and Norway to the west, and a Scandinavian holiday could easily involve more than one country to take in the region's most remarkable sights.

Malmo, Gothenburg and Stockholm are the main cities to visit for shopping, culture and an upbeat nightlife in a country famed for its Volvos, Vikings, snowbound wintry conditions, herring and meatballs. With the archipelagos surrounding Stockholm there are myriad private anchorages for sunbathing, swimming or holding an exclusive party.

The peninsulas are excellent for exploration by kayak, paddleboard of jet ski, and those on board hoping to fish for their supper will be delighted by the Baltic Sea inundated with cod, salmon and lobster. Scuba divers can head down to see these species swimming freely through the waters, all while visiting one wreck after another that sank more than a century ago.

Sweden offers a diverse set of yacht charter possibilities, and this makes this Nordic country an excellent and perfect base for seasoned sailors who want to visit the most important and popular sights and attractions in the region. Stockholm is a main maritime hub and provides convenient access to several attractions within the Baltic coast. In line with this, there has been an increase in large luxury yachts and superyachts - both private and available for charter - visiting Sweden and Northern Europe.

There are plenty of ways to spend a week in Sweden to make your holiday an experience that you will cherish for a lifetime. Contact CharterWorld to find out more about luxury yacht charter itineraries and vessel options for this incredible and relatively undiscovered destination.

Five quick reasons to visit Sweden:

Unforgettable natural phenomena (Midnight Sun, Aurora Borealis), Stunning waterfalls, Impressive forts and castles, Active outdoor lifestyle, Thriving flora and fauna

More about this part of Europe

Sweden is surrounded by the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia. With its close proximity to Norway a luxury yacht itinerary could easily include a visit to the mystical Norwegian Fjords, where the waterfalls are frozen solid over winter in a fantastic icy display.

Sample Belgium's delectable chocolates and stop by at Antwerp for its famous diamond district, or keep your eye out as you pass by the Dutch shipyards. To the east, you can cruise through the Baltic Sea and visit St. Petersburg, renowned for its art and cafe culture.

Sweden Yacht Charter Experiences

Your yacht charter holiday experience in Sweden is an eclectic mix of the old charm which pervades in several old towns and the cosmopolitan character of modern cities. An important destination for yacht charter holidaymakers is Gothenburg, which is the second biggest city of Sweden. It is famous for its diverse shopping opportunities, dining treats and sightseeing choices.

sailing yacht charter sweden

The beautiful city of Gothenburg is styled with boulevards and broad canals that exude a magical and romantic vibe. An evening in Gothenburg can be spent sampling the local craft beers and wines at the bars and clubs along the waterfront, but during the day there are world-class museums to explore, including the Museum of Fine Art, Museum of Natural History, the Maritime Museum with an Aquarium and the Museum of World Culture. Take in the fresh air with a stroll through the Botanical Garden, and this modern city has a fantastic array of modern boutiques and shopping malls.

North of Malmo the bays have beautiful sandy beaches for games and water sports, and the nearby peninsula is the Kullenberg Nature Reserve which is a popular spot for Scuba divers because of the range of shallow and deep sites. Herring is often spotted along with cod, salmon and lobster and a basking shark might occasionally be sighted in the area as well.

In Malmo itself there are some excellent hidden bars and Michelin-starred restaurants to end a day of sunbathing on the local beaches or exploring the sights: Malmö Castle, Little Square, St. Peter's Church, Malmö Konsthall and Moderna Museet Malmö are close to the large local parks and are best explored by bike.

Skane at the southern tip of Sweden is referred to as the Swedish Riviera and the most popular area between Osterlen to Kristianstad is renowned for its long soft crescent beaches and clear waters. The bays make excellent anchorages on a stop along the coastline and wind conditions are ideal for windsurfers, kite surfers and sailing dinghys.

The picturesque and well-loved yacht charter holiday destinations in the charming Nordic country include the Stockholm archipelago and the Bohuslan region. Stockholm holds the enviable distinction of being the world’s largest archipelago. Ideal places to visit include premier tourist spots like Marstand and Nykoping , where you can immerse yourself in everyday life in a typical Swedish fishing village.

The capital city of Stockholm has enough to keep you in the city for days, to name but a few: The palace/museum 'Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde', the Vasa Museum which holds the well-preserved wreck of a 17th Century ship, the ABBA Museum and the Thielska Galleriet, which has an extensive collection that includes the paintings of Edvard Munch. The Old Town on the island of Gamla Stan is colourful, atmospheric and culturally rich with even more museums detailing medieval culture and royal life. The T-Centralen is also more than just a railways station – it’s an underground art exhibition and should be seen regardless of whether you intend to hop on a train.

There are walking tours of the city that tell of its captivating history and ghost stories, as well as tours taking you on tasting sessions for wine and craft beers. There are exceptional restaurants in Stockholm - including the three-starred Michelin restaurant Frantzén - for a sensational dining treat to make an anniversary or special occasion even more unforgettable.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.

Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.

Sailing holidays in sweden.

Sweden offers relaxed sailing on the east or west coast, both with islands of outstanding natural beauty.

"Just to say that if there is only one place in the world that you should charter make it the Stockholm Archipelago! The beauty and interest factor is stunning. Overall it's easy sailing, in most places like sailing on very large lakes. The closer you get to the open water of the Baltic, the quieter it became and nowhere did it ever seem crowded. Guest harbours all superb and natural harbours stunning. Every night the water became glass like and we had the quietest nights on board ever. A memorable and thoroughly enjoyable charter." P.M. 2015

Charter a yacht and explore the hundreds of offshore islands off the east coast of Sweden from Stockholm. These archipelagos form a necklace of islands with sheltered natural harbours and traditional fishing villages.

From the marina at Saltsjo-Duvnas you can sail into the Stockholm Archipelago, which stretches about 60km to the east. It consists of around 24,000 islands and islets, perfect to explore on a sailing holiday. Visit the larger islands of Möja, Runmarö and Nämdö and on the eastern edge of the archipelago is Sandhamn, the area’s most popular spot, with a picturesque marina, good restaurants and an excellent beach.

A sailing holiday allows you to visit quaint fishing villages, with cafes and restaurants serving fresh seafood. Explore islands with small fishing communities and islands which are completely deserted – one thing is certain, a yacht charter holiday in Sweden will be entirely unique.

7 DAYS - Itinerary 1

Suggested sailing itinerary: sweden itinerary 1.

7 DAYS Itinerary 1

With 30,000+ islands within easy reach, you could sail the Stockholm archipelago for months and never run short of delightful, sunny, charming destinations. Whether you're looking to relax amid the dramatic Baltic maritime scenery of pine-shrouded islets and secluded rocky coves, or sample food & drink pleasures onshore with the region's friendliest people, sailing the Stockholm archipelago is an experience that creates lifelong memories!

Our first sample Stockholm archipelago itinerary stays relatively close to home, from inner- to mid-archipelago, where you'll find a breathtaking variety of destinations just a few hours' smooth sailing away.

Your sailing holiday begins in Vaxholm, the “capital” of the Stockholm archipelago. Located just east of Stockholm, Vaxholm (the name of both the town and the island it's on) is a gorgeous and quaint Baltic destination, home to picturesque turn-of-the-last-century pastel houses, delightful family-owned cafes and restaurants, and charming little shops on cobbled streets.

Visit Vaxholm Fortress (built in 1544), a famous castle that for centuries has guarded the approaches to Stockholm. The area is also home to an amazingly diverse selection of scenic pine-clad islets and sheltered rocky coves, perfect for a day's exploring and relaxation.

Grinda is a delightfully unspoiled island, sprinkled with cozy, rustic wooden cottages among elegant pine woods. Even from the waters offshore, you can glimpse deer and foxes frolicking. In medieval times, this island was the haunt of buccaneers and smugglers. Today, it's home to the Grinda Wardshus, a hotel resort noted for its woodsy charm.

Grinda is a favorite destination for outdoor day activities, including hiking, paddle boarding, bird watching, and more. Seals and marine sea life are common sights, at play in their natural habitat. The island is also a perfect destination for rest & relaxation, with numerous little cafes, restaurants, and bars.

Venturing now further north but still within the cozy confines of the Stockholm archipelago, Furusund is a small and quiet island with a reputation for attracting an interesting and fun-loving crowd of holiday visitors.

During the day, when you're not swimming in the calm waters around the island, you can come onshore to sample the numerous galleries, cafes, and tiny shops. Entertainment options are plentiful with several lively harbor bars and restaurants and an active summer season of local sailing events.

Located in the northern archipelago, Finnhamn's natural beauty and Baltic scenery is preserved within one of the region's most eco-friendly destinations. Sheltered bays and rocky cliffs warmed by long summer days beckon you to relax, explore, play in the water, and enjoy the incredible adventure of Sweden's island treasures.

Large portions of Finnhamn are designated as nature reserves, but you're free to responsibly wander the island. Primeval forests and fairy tale meadows, quaint farms and cozy cafes – bike around the island, swim, hike, and relax in one of the Stockholm archipelago's most enchanting destinations.

Perched on the eastern fringe of the Stockholm archipelago, Ostholmen and Möja are companion islands that offer a dramatic and unforgettable place to view the northern lights. The islands are more sparsely developed and less frequently visited than other islands, allowing you plenty of freedom to enjoy time with family, friends, and loved ones.

The sauna on Ostholmen is a can't miss attraction; it's free, but book reservations ahead to ensure you have a place. Möja has been inhabited since Viking times and is a wonderful place to commune with nature while biking or hiking. Kayaking is a uniquely beautiful and private experience – much of the surrounding waters and islets are nature reserves, where you can observe wildlife and Baltic flora.

Just an hour south is Sandhamn, a beloved sailing destination that combines an idyllic village that looks straight out of the 18th century, with a lively day and nighttime scene of cozy cafes and shops, bustling restaurants, and cheerful bars. White sand beaches are prefect for fun & sun activities, while the interior of the island offers biking and hiking among the stately pines.

Sandhamn is home to the Royal Swedish Yacht Club and numerous amenities, making this a perfect island to wind up your Stockholm archipelago holiday. Enjoy delicious food, pulsating nightlife, and a vibe that caters to the fun-loving vacation yachting crowd.

The natural scenery is the island's main attraction, which is easily accessible via an extensive trail network. Famed Swedish author August Strindberg noted of Biskopsö, “When you land, you are surprised to find a little anchored piece of paradise.” Enjoy a day here surrounded by Mother Nature's beauty!

Nämdö itself has miles of scenic trails, a quaint little town and farmsteads, and camping areas for overnight stay. A small family-owned restaurant serves cozy meals and there's an historic church on the island that features prominently in Swedish literature. It's a peaceful and idyllic Stockholm archipelago destination.
