10 Pandora Stations for Your Next Party

August 25, 2017

When it comes to entertaining, we pretty much always have music playing in the background. And, oftentimes, we like to turn it up a bit and have a dance party. Almost every night my son and I have a dance party in our living room? Why? Because it’s so fun to dance, jump, and bounce around with our son. He loves to dance and I can’t help but join him.

We usually change up the music throughout the party to fit the vibe of what’s taking place. If we’re hanging out on our porch, then we usually have some chill playing in the background. When it comes to dinnertime, we turn on songs by artists like Frank Sinatra to bring on the ultimate dinner vibe.

Over the past year, we have fallen head over heels in love with our  Amazon Echo . We even bought an Amazon Dot for our basement and for my office. Yes, I know that these devices can perform a lot of other functions. But, the main function we use them for is music. Lots and lots of music. Music all day every day. We hardly ever not have music playing in our house. It’s just our thing.

This is totally not an ad … let’s just say that if you’re looking for a great device, turn to the Amazon Echo . After being at our house, my parents returned home and purchased an Echo. When my brother and sister-in-law returned home, they immediately purchased an  Amazon Echo . My in-laws are now talking about getting an  Amazon Echo . They are just the neatest devices that can do so much and have amazing sound quality. #endsoapboxrant

So, where was I … oh right, different types of music. Instead of having the stress of making a playlist for every get together we have, we just ask our Echo to play Pandora stations.

What I found lately is that I’ve been stuck in a rut. When I go to turn on music, I find that I’m playing the same music over and over again. So, I set out to find some great Pandora stations that give off a great vibe. As it turns out, they are great for a cocktail party or any gathering for that matter. However, it all depends on the mood and atmosphere.

So, without further adieu, here are 10 great Pandora stations that are perfect for your next party:

I think the name pretty much says it all. B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan are the superstars of this Pandora station. The music keeps the summer vibe going all year round.

Brunch Cafe

Who doesn’t love brunch? Why not invite Ingrid Michaelson, Norah Jones, and Etta James to brunch? The station is full of melodic songs that pair perfectly with your mimosas.

Classic Soul BBQ Radio

Let’s face it, this is just feel good music. The beat is on point, the artists are classics, and the songs might even get you up and get you dancing. There’s nothing wrong with that, right?

You’re bound to hear the greats like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Dave Brubeck when you play this Pandora station. The station keeps the gathering feeling light and casual.

Frank Sinatra Radio

As I mentioned earlier, playing this station while eating will give off the perfect dinner vibe. The greats like Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis will fill the air with all sorts of memorable songs.

French Cooking Music

The music on this station is very mellow yet welcoming. You could play this music as people are arriving to your dinner party and/or while they are enjoying appetizers and cocktails. The station gives off a laid back, casual, yet fancy vibe (thanks to the French).

Hipster Cocktail Party

Honestly, the name of this station is kind of ridiculous so don’t judge a book by its cover. Trust me. Bill Withers, Nina Simone, Van Morrison, and Ray LaMontagne are some regulars you’ll find on this station. The music on this station is somewhat mellow but can also be a bit peppier at times. It’s definitely a good mix.

Summer Hits of the 90s

The name says it all. Come on, we can have some fun, right?

I’m putting this radio station on the list because my husband loves it. He always has it playing whether or not we’re having people over to our house. The station plays a good mix of 90s and 80s music that many people will recognize, appreciate, and enjoy.

Yacht Rock Radio

Disregard the name of this station. It’s nothing like what it sounds. The station is awesome. Think Doobie Brothers and Hall & Oates. See? Awesome.

What are your favorite Pandora stations?

Hilarious! I came across that station and thought of you (surprise!). Great minds think alike, right?

January 4, 2018 at 7:48 pm

Global Chill Radio. You won’t know any of the songs at first, but it will grow on you. Chill house-DJ music–great for mild dancing and your friends will be impressed you know of such “underground” good tunes. :-)

January 5, 2019 at 9:56 am

Seatrain Radio. Jazz to Rock with songs like Flute Thing, Melissa, Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. Leon Russel, Dave Mason, Eric Clapton. Sounds of the Seventies. If. You don’t dance, you will have happy feet.

11 Musical Genres on Pandora You've Probably Never Heard Of

(Associated Press)

When  Pandora  burst onto the scene 14 years ago, it quickly established itself as a terrific, and free, music-streaming website that could help you discover new music. Since its launch, however, there are quite a few other services (like Songza and Spotify) that promise the same thing, if not with more control.

That’s why Pandora’s custom genre stations have become a special identifier for the company. Pandora has used its musical identification software to collect and organize more than 600 playlists centered around a musical style, mood, or cultural trend –– many of which you’ve probably never heard before.

These genre playlists are created through a collaboration between the teams led by Pandora executives Michael Addicott, manager of curation, and Steve Hogan, who  mans the company’s Music Genome Project, the patented, Pandora-specific system that analyzes around 400 musical attributes in order to categorize songs.

"We’re describing things like whether the song’s in a minor key or major key; how simple or sophisticated the harmony is; rhythmically what’s going on; qualities of the lead vocal, whether it’s a lighter, breathy, smooth, gritty voice; a high or low voice, male or female vocal," Hogan told Yahoo Tech. "Basically trying to get a musical blueprint of every individual song."

After it’s been run through the Genome, Addicott’s team sifts through the music and identifies the top ten percent, or so, that best matches a genre. Pandora recently used this process on a new John Philip Sousa-themed list (called Sousapalooza) that’s set to be released before the Fourth of July.

Until then, you should know that the list of little-known Pandora genres is longer than you think. Below, here are some of the more niche genre stations you can listen to in your Web browser, with descriptions from the experts themselves:

Yacht Rock : ’70s, light beachy vibe; light rock for boating and about boats. Artists include Hall & Oates, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers, and Michael McDonald.

Bro Country : Has acts like Jason Aldean, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, and Eric Church.

Quinceanera :  Self-explanatory.

Viking Metal :  Scandinavian, pagan worship themes; beer drinking/beer hall types of rhythms.

Ridiculous Relatives Comedy :  Comedians talking about their families, including comics John Mulaney, Kevin Hart, Louis C.K., and Joe Matarese.

Lowrider Oldies : Polished R&B; smooth and classic. Includes artists like Smokey Robinson, Al Green, and The Temptations.

Freak Folk :  Avant garde, artsy folk. Music that sounds like Devendra Banhart.

Drone :  Artsy techno, ambient art music; non-New Age side of ambient. Includes artists like Brian Eno and Steve Roach.

Boogaloo : Funk, Latin, popular in the ’60s. Includes artists like Ray Baretto, Ricardo Ray, Willie Cologne, and Pete Rodriguez.

Pride Party :  Feel-good, pop songs about being fly. Confidence boosters, good dance beats. Lady Gaga, David Guetta, etc.

Film Scores :  Plays “epic” soundtracks. One comment from a person is that this station makes you feel like your life is a movie.

Go ahead and try a few.

The 10 Best Free Pandora Alternatives for Streaming Music

While Pandora is great, it's not available everywhere. Here are the best free Pandora alternatives if you want to stream music.

Pandora is one of the most recognizable music streaming services available. And most people who use Pandora love Pandora. However, if you've landed here it's because you're looking for the best Pandora alternatives. So, let's start by explaining how Pandora works...

You open Pandora, select the genre or mood of music you want, and let the "radio" play some tunes. If you like a song, you hit the thumbs-up icon to add similar tracks to the radio station. If you don't, you hit the thumbs-down icon, and the radio station plays less of that style.

It's a classic, and very user-friendly, setup. However, not only is Pandora not available in many countries, there are tons of other music streaming services available. So, in this article, we list the best free Pandora alternatives. Presented in no particular order.

1. YouTube Music

How it Compares. YouTube Music is a music streaming service that is slowly replacing Google Play Music. Where Google Play Music featured as standard on all new Android devices, users will now find the YouTube Music app instead (on new devices---Google Play Music won't suddenly disappear into the ether).

YouTube Music doesn't supply an official number of available songs, because it draws on its deals with record labels, uploads to YouTube, mashups, remixes, and much more. The depth of the YouTube Music library is substantial. Library-wise, it has Pandora beat hands-down. But then again, it has most other services beat too, so that's no shame on Pandora's part.

The YouTube Music interface is easy to navigate, although it is far from the prettiest music streaming service around.

Notable Features. The incredible catalog of music is one of the most notable YouTube Music features, without a doubt. Aside from that, YouTube Music also plays host to live music streams from a wide range of artists. There's also a YouTube Music integration for the Google Clock, which allows you to wake up to your favorite artist or playlist.

Cost. YouTube Music has three different subscription levels. The free version is YouTube Music, which is ad-supported (you'll see or hear an advert every three to six songs), runs at a lower bitrate, and if you're using the mobile app, it requires the screen to remain on at all times. The latter is a definite major downside to YouTube Music.

You can (and probably should) upgrade to one of YouTube Music's premium tiers to unlock more features. YouTube Music Premium stops the ads, allows you to listen to music in the background on mobile devices, and to download music for offline listening. A YouTube Music Premium subscription costs $9.99/month.

Then there is the YouTube Premium subscription, which includes everything in the previous tier as well as access to YouTube Originals (YouTube's original programming channels). The YouTube Premium subscription also removes ads from the main YouTube site, too. The YouTube Premium subscription comes in at $11.99/month. Is YouTube Premium value for money ? It all depends on how you use YouTube.

Regional Availability. YouTube Music and its premium counterparts are available in over 70 countries .

How it Compares. Deezer's library consists of over 57 million tracks, blowing most competitors out of the water, including Pandora. User interface updates in recent years have made Deezer easier to use. Still, there's nothing particularly special about the interface. Is that familiarity a bad thing? Perhaps not if you're jumping from service to service.

Notable Features. At the time of writing, Deezer has over 30,000 public radio channels available, as well as 100 million publicly available playlists. Of course, you're not going to sift through all of those. Thankfully, Deezer's search integration is useful and helps you find what you want.

Deezer Flow creates a personalized playlist that combines all of your favorite music, as well as new recommendations and those tunes you might have forgotten about. You can find exclusive DJ mixes, unique podcasts, and other Deezer Original recordings, too. You could also check out Deezer Next to see the artists the music streaming service is tipping for future success.

Cost. Deezer operates four subscription types. The free version of Deezer is ad-supported, restricts you to a single listening profile, and offers a limited number of track skips per day. The free version doesn't allow offline playback, either, which is fairly standard for music streaming services.

The second tier is Deezer Premium , which removes adverts from the listening experience, introduces unlimited skips per day, as well as offline listening. Deezer Premium comes in at $9.99/month.

However, although you have "unlimited skips," the Deezer forums have several posts from angry users wondering why they can only skip 150 tracks/hour. You could be making a playlist and skipping through tracks, only to suddenly find your account locked, so it is something to consider. The issue relates to how the Deezer development team attempts to stop account sharing.

Then there is a final subscription tier that contains two slightly different offerings. Deezer Family includes everything from the previous tier and also allows you to create six different listening profiles.

Whereas, Deezer HiFi includes everything from the previous tier but instead of additional listening profiles, unlocks 16-bit FLAC quality audio. Deezer HiFi is a brilliant option if you value high-quality audio, which many music streaming services eschew.

Both Deezer Family and Deezer HiFi will set you back $14.99/month.

Regional Availability. Deezer is available in over 185 countries .

How it Compares. Jango is one of Pandora's long-standing direct competitors, operating since 2007. Both Jango and Pandora operate in a similar manner. But whereas Pandora's song choices are based on the Music Genome Project, Jango's recommendations are based on its users' behaviors.

Notable Features. Each Jango radio station is customizable via the Variety settings. You can opt to add the most popular user choices to expand the radio station, or to add More Variety, or the Most Variety. You can also add specific artists to the currently playing radio station, too.

Jango highlights and promotes independent artists across its radio stations. When an independent artist comes up, you can leave feedback. Interestingly, Jango uses an internal cryptocurrency, known as NeuCoin. You can use NeuCoin to tip independent artists, helping them receive a small payment for their music.

Cost. There is no premium version of Jango. The entire platform is ad-funded. That said, Jango doesn't bombard you with adverts and ruin your listening experience. The adverts are few and far between. Plus, you can reduce the number of ads per day to a single instance if you link your Facebook account.

Better still (and this is really impressive), Jango doesn't interrupt the Android or iOS apps with any form of advertising.

Regional Availability. All countries worldwide.

How it Compares. Spotify has a lot going for it. With over 50 million tracks, 700,000 podcasts, and nearly 300 million users, Spotify has become the byword for music streaming services. At this point, Spotify also has a recognizable and familiar user interface. It definitely isn't the most exciting interface, but it is extremely easy to use.

The biggest downside to Spotify is the poor audio quality. Spotify's maximum audio streaming rate is a miserly 320kbps. In comparison, the premium Deezer HiFi option offers 1,411kbps (which is uncompressed CD audio quality), and Amazon Music Unlimited offers an average of 850kbps. Spotify's offering is hardly "Premium."

Notable Features. Spotify offers so much more than internet radio. Want on-demand streaming? Spotify is one of the best at it. Want to expand your tastes? Check out  Spotify's music discovery tools . You'll also find lots of non-music content, including stand-up comedy and podcasts. And that's not forgetting the end of year roundups detailing your listening habits, along with your best of playlist.

Spotify is stepping up the fight to Pandora in other ways, too. The Spotify Stations playlist app offers a Pandora-like experience, complete with thumbs-up and thumbs-down, and music suggestions.

Related: Spotify vs. Pandora: Which Is Better?

Cost. Spotify offers two subscription types: free and premium. The free Spotify version is ad-supported, does not allow offline playback, and does not allow access to the highest quality audio playback Spotify offers.

A Spotify Premium subscription unlocks offline music playback, all smartphone app features, removes any ad interruptions, and unlocks Spotify's highest music quality playback option. A Spotify Premium subscription comes in at $9.99/month.

There are two variations to the Spotify Premium subscription. A Spotify Student subscription unlocks everything in the Premium subscription but only costs $4.99/month (with a working student email account).

There is also the option of Spotify Family , which offers everything in the Premium subscription for up to six accounts living at the same address. The Spotify Family account costs $14.99/month.

Regional Availability. Spotify is available in over 80 countries .

5. AccuRadio

How it Compares. AccuRadio is one of the oldest internet radio streaming services still active, serving users since 2000. At the core of AccuRadio's long-running success is simplicity. The AccuRadio interface is simple and easy to use, allowing a reasonable amount of user station customization. AccuRadio doesn't have the largest music catalog, but it is more than enough to keep you listening.

Notable Features. You can blend up to 15 channels together to create a specialized listening experience. You can also rate songs on a five-star scale, then use the Five Star Radio feature to listen only to your absolute favorite songs. One of AccuRadio's best features, especially in comparison to Pandora, is unlimited skipping for all accounts.

Cost. AccuRadio doesn't offer a premium account or subscription service. The platform is ad-supported, although you can reduce the ad frequency if you create a free account.

How it Compares. Music is only a small portion of what TuneIn Radio does. This service is all about internet radio in the truest sense: tapping into live radio stations through the internet. Online-only music stations do exist, and they're perfectly fine, but TuneIn Radio's selling point is its live radio streams.

As a Pandora alternative, it definitely lives up to the radio streaming service moniker.

Notable Features . TuneIn features over 100,000 radio stations from around the world, plus thousands of podcasts. You can filter your streaming selections by music, sports, talk, and trending stations, as well as kids' radio and podcasts.

Cost. TuneIn offers a Free or Premium subscription. The TuneIn free subscription is ad-supported, playing an ad when you launch a radio station or podcast.

The TuneIn Premium subscription removes banner ads from the TuneIn site and desktop clients. It also enables you to listen to live play-by-play coverage of every NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL game. A TuneIn Premium subscription removes adverts from the MSNBC, Fox News Talk, and CNBC radio stations.

A TuneIn Premium subscription costs $9.99/month.

Regional Availability. All countries worldwide. TuneIn Premium accounts are only available in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

7. iHeartRadio

How it Compares. iHeartRadio brings radio streams from over 850 local stations under one roof, plus podcasts, music playlists, and more. The result is a Pandora alternative that covers a wide range of content types. iHeartRadio is easy to use, similarly to Pandora. One plus side to iHeartRadio is the user library, which allows you to customize and edit your recently listened to stations, podcasts, and artists.

Notable Features. The aforementioned user library, known as Your Library, is a useful tool for customization. There is also a handy suggestions section that offers up new music, podcasts, and radio stations you might enjoy. As iHeartRadio is an umbrella for the iHeartMedia network, you can listen to hundreds of live radio stations from across the US.

Cost. There are three iHeartRadio subscription types.

The free subscription offers free live radio at any time, personalized artist radio stations, and access to the iHeartRadio podcast selection. Free iHeartRadio accounts may skip six tracks per hour, per station, for a maximum of 15 skips per day across all artist stations.

An iHeartRadio Plus subscription allows unlimited song skipping across all stations, on-demand song and artist play, and the option to save and replay music from the radio. The Plus subscription comes in at $4.99/month.

Finally, the iHeartRadio All Access subscription includes everything in the previous tier, as well as unlimited access to every single iHeartRadio song, plus you can create an unlimited number of playlists. An All Access subscription costs $9.99/month.

8. Radio.Garden

How it Compares. Radio Garden is an almost-unique music streaming option on this list. Instead of selecting artist or genre radio stations, you spin the globe and find radio stations broadcasting all around the world.

In comparison to Pandora, Radio Garden brings the entire world of music to your mouse clicks. You can tune into tens of thousands of radio stations, listening to every genre, style, artist, and more.

Notable Features. Radio Garden features an incredible number of radio stations. There is no user curation or individual station management, as these are live radio stations. You can add radio stations to your favorites list, as well as search for a specific radio station, city, country, or region.

Radio Garden keeps a list of weird and wonderful radio stations, too. You can tune in to an ambient nature sound broadcast, the sounds of a theatre organ, and even listen to truckers chatting.

Cost. Radio Garden is free to use. You may hear local advertising, depending on the radio stations you tune in to.

9. Radio4000

How it Compares. Radio4000 is a different proposition to Pandora. Instead of skipping and liking tracks, you can move around a world map and listen to radio stations curated by individuals. The result is a music streaming experience that exposes you to lots of new music without the restrictions of skips or missing artists.

The user interface is basic but simple to navigate, offering two web player options.

Notable Features. Radio4000 lets you build a personal radio station that you can broadcast to other people that click on your location, which is a nice feature. All of Radio4000's tracks come from YouTube, which means you have access to the vast YouTube catalog. The downside to that is the potential for a track to disappear, and there is no consistency for audio quality. Still, the range of music available more than makes up for that.

Cost. Radio4000 is completely free.

Regional Availability . All countries worldwide.

10. Amazon Music

How it Compares. Pandora's drastically increasing catalog size means Amazon Music is now the slimmer option. However, many users prefer the more traditional music streaming service interface found with Amazon Music, instead of Pandora's sometimes tricky streaming stations.

Notable Features. The Amazon Music catalog consists of 2 million songs. In music streaming service terms, that is a tiny number. Still, the Amazon Music catalog updates frequently to introduce the latest tracks, sometimes long before Pandora. There are options to filter playlists according to mood, genre, and activity.

Cost. Amazon Music is Amazon's free subscription to the Amazon Prime Music service. The free subscription allows anyone with an Amazon account to listen to ad-supported music via the Amazon Music service. The free subscription was previously only available to Amazon Echo owners. However, this free version of Amazon Music is only available to the US, UK, and Germany at the time of writing.

Those with an Amazon Prime subscription can use Amazon Prime Music . If you already use Amazon Prime for its many other benefits , then you can think of Prime Music as a free bonus.

Then, there is Amazon Music Unlimited , which unlocks around 60 million tracks, unlimited ad-free on-demand listening, variable bitrate control, offline downloads, and much more. An Amazon Music Unlimited subscription costs $7.99/month for Amazon Prime subscribers, or $9.99/month without Amazon Prime.

Finally, there is Amazon Music Unlimited HD , which includes everything from the previous tiers, but allows users to stream music in Ultra HD quality. Amazon's Ultra HD quality streaming means audio playback with an average bitrate of 3730kbps, significantly higher than any other music streaming option. An Amazon Music Unlimited HD subscription costs $12.99/month for Amazon Prime members, or $14.99/month for those without.

Regional Availability. Amazon Music free is only available in the US, UK, and Germany at the time of writing. Amazon Music services availability varies by subscription type and region.

What Are the Best Pandora Alternatives?

I'm a very long-term Spotify user and will continue to be so. But the beauty of services like Pandora, Jango, and Radio Garden is uncovering new music, which they offer in spades. However, if the quality of the audio is important to you, try Deezer HiFi or Amazon Music Unlimited HD. Along with these other music sites for audiophiles .

If you're an artist, you need to find out how to distribute your music on streaming services .

ORD to Anywhere

Stop wondering, start wandering., photo: a guide to moscow's most beautiful metro stations.

I just recently visited my 60th country, so I think it's fair to say I've seen a good number of subway stations. In my experience 95% of them are a utilitarian hodgepodge designed with efficiency and low cost in mind. They get a commuter from Point A to Point B with little fuss or delay and have little regard for style or flair. Can't blame most cities for this - times are tough and running a city is expensive. But then there's the other 5%. The ones who has the power, prestige, or sheer lack of financial prudence to keep it simple and serve up a chic, designer station that elevate the commuting experience with their beauty and innovation.

Need examples? There's the rainbow streak of Munich's Candidplatz station. The stained glass dream of Kaohsiung's Formosa Boulevard stop. The vaulted yellow-tinged atrium at Singapore's Changi Airport stop. These stations make commuting a pleasure, even if just for one stop. Sadly while many systems have one or two iconic station, few really can claim they've woven an appealing aesthetic throughout their maps. A few do their though - Washington D.C.'s system features quite a few brutalist dreams and Stockholm's is a playful homage to fanciful imagination.

Nothing holds a candle to Moscow's gloriously retro masterpiece though.

I recently spent an entire day riding the rails through Moscow's Metro system on a single ticket going from station to station, line to line and taking in the grandeur of what I am convinced is one of the city's greatest tourist sights. Make no mistake, I am definitely sitting here and telling you that if you make your to the Russian capital you should spend an entire day underground looking at subway stations. Trust me - you won't regret it!

I'll give some more detail at the end of the post about how to use Moscow's Metro system, but for now let's get into the meat of things - my six favorite stations! Of course this is a subjective listing based on my personal preferences, so keep in mind that there are actually quite a few other station in the city's system worth seeing. If you really want to do an in-depth dive, you could spend several days exploring glorious stations throughout the city and surrounding suburbs. But for now .....

Komsomolskaya

pandora stations like yacht rock

Funny story about this station ..... I spent five days in Russia's capital on my recent visit and spent the 4th day exploring the Metro system. Komsomolskaya was the station I based myself out of since it was literally across the street from my hotel - the Hilton Leningradskaya, located in one of the city's famous "Seven Sisters" buildings. I was in and out of this station multiple times over several days and not once did I see any of the beauty you see above you. Why? Well like many of Moscow's stations, Komsomolskaya is a transfer point for more than one train line. I had been using the Sokolnicheskaya Line (Red 1), who's platform is rather boring. It's only when you head over to the Koltsevaya Line (Brown 5, the inner circle) that the real majesty is seen.

pandora stations like yacht rock

Transfering from the Red 1 to the Brown 5 you head down a long escalator to by greeted by the giant chandelier and Soviet mosaic artwork of the Order of Victory, a Soviet military award of the highest level. At first I was stunned by how beautiful they both were, which was silly in retrospect. If you head down the long corridor pictured on the left you can take another short escalator up to the yellow dreamscape that is the main station space at Komsomolskaya. A baroque masterpiece of yellow and white accent pieces. Octagonal columns run the length of both sides of the station providing vaulted arches for commuters to scurry through on their way to and from everyday life in Moscow.

pandora stations like yacht rock

While the station itself is quite stunning on its own, there's actually a deeper meaning to the design and decor as there's a "theme" to the entire experience - the historical Russian fight for freedom and independence. "Under the Sea", "Time of Our Lives" or some other horrible high school dance theme might have been easier, but the Soviets pulled this off flawlessly.

The station features 8 mosaic artwork pieces featuring famous military battles and victories in Russian history ranging from Alexander Nevsky's victory over Crusaders at the Battle on the Ice in 1242 to the Soviet storming of the German Reichstag in Berlin near the end of World War II in 1945. Smaller decorative pieces feature renderings of various types of weaponry through the ages. There's even a bust of Soviet revolutionary and (to some) luminary Vladimir Lenin.

I'm not sure Komsomolskaya was my absolute favorite station in Moscow, but it's definitely in consideration.

Novoslobodskaya

pandora stations like yacht rock

This is the station that made me feel like I had chased a rabbit down a hole and fallen into Wonderland. Something about the dark, moody lighting and the vibrant glow of stained glass artwork punching through the gloomy vibe. I almost felt like it would be completely normal for a Mad Hatter tea party to be set up in the middle of the hustle and bustle.

pandora stations like yacht rock

LIke Komsomolskaya, Novoslobodskaya features a prominent mosaic along one of the walls of the station. The rose and gold hued work is meant to depict world peace, which despite feeling very beauty pageant is actually a nice sentiment and is (as you can see) quite beautiful.

pandora stations like yacht rock

Unlike Komsomolskaya, this one didn't really have a theme though. The designer, Alexey Dushkin, wanted the stained glass to be the focal point of the entire station. There are a total of 32 panels designed by three Latvians, which was an integral part of the Soviet Union at the time of construction. This isn't the station you'd want to come to and casually read a book while waiting for a friend as it's a rather dim and dark atmosphere, but it's certainly got a moody charm and the illuminated glass gives an almost ethereal feel to the whole place.

pandora stations like yacht rock

Similar to Novoslobodskaya, Kiyevskaya features arched walkways with a central corridor featuring dangling chandeliers and intricate mosaic work around the vaulted entrances to the train platforms. It's not quite as dark and brooding though, with a marked increase in light in this station. I suspect the need to highlight the stained glass translates into a need for lower light levels in the former.

The station is named because it is located next to Kiyevsky railway station, Moscow's historic train gateway to Ukraine and its capital - Kyiv/Kiev. The subway design itself was selected from a public competition in Ukraine out of 73 entries. The mosaic artwork that features on the pylons between every archway focuses on the historic friendship between Ukraine and Russia, which is quite interesting considering the rather tangled mess of hate and love happening between the two today.

pandora stations like yacht rock

At the end of the station platform is a rather small and unassuming portrait and memorial to Lenin, which is a common theme in the Moscow Metro. And Moscow in general to be quite honest. At this point in my exploration of the system I took up a post next to the memorial and simply watched Muscovites go about their daily routines, darting in and out of the little archways that remains one of the hallmarks of many of Moscow's most glamorous and glitzy stations. Coming from a city with relatively decent public transit coverage but rather abysmal aesthetic, I was a bit awestruck that people in Moscow were treated to such beautiful surroundings on a daily basis.

pandora stations like yacht rock

Taganskaya was the station that "broke the mold" a little bit for me while exploring as its white and baby blue color scheme was a departure from many of the darker and moodier atmospheres I had seen up to that point. Despite being one of the more crowded and chaotic stations I visited on my jaunt (likely due to the time of day, I arrived here around 515PM), the soft white and blue hues helped created a more serene environment compared to others in the system. A but of an oasis of calm tones in the raging sea of one of the world's busiest Metros.

pandora stations like yacht rock

The central decorating element in this station are the intricate maiolica panels along the pylons. Maiolica is a style of glazing utilizing tin that rose to prominence during the Renaissance . The panels all feature a profile of a Soviet servicemember along with decorative flourishes and military accolades. Each profile is intended to represent various types of military positions such as sailors, pilots, or infantrymen. Each face is unique but familiar, square jaws and noble brows.

pandora stations like yacht rock

The interior coordinator features panels with the vibrant baby blue while the panels along the exterior walkways where the trains are boarded retain the white color used for the walls and thus have a single hue throughout. One cute element I noticed was that the glass centers of the chandeliers in the central hallways were tinted to mirror the blue paint used on the interior panels. A little matchy-matchy but it works in this instance.

Novokuznetskaya

pandora stations like yacht rock

The first thing I saw as I stepped off the train at Novouznetskaya station was a big mural of an airplane soaring above the central corridor, which is an instant way of catching my attention. I'm an aviation geek and putta plane on something pretty much guarantees I'm endeared and enthralled. The overwhelming color scheme in this station seems to be auburn and rust, a fitting juxtaposition to the station's theme of honoring Soviet military heros as well as the war-time industrial boom that fueled victory.

pandora stations like yacht rock

As you make your through the station platform you can see various murals on the ceilings highlighting the aviation, construction, and weapons manufacturing industries. Smaller decorative pieces along the pillars between the platforms feature dedications to various Soviet war heroes. The repeating hexagon pattern above contrasted with the elaborate wartime scenes running along the rust-colored border makes for a lovely visual treat.

pandora stations like yacht rock

The station also features a rather stirring mural featuring Lenin leading the revolution when you exit the platform and attempt to leave the station or transfer to another line that uses this area as a hub. If you're lucky you'll meet with some buskers just like I did, playing first a stirring rendition of Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana" followed by a perhaps more appropriate piece by Tchaikovsky.

Mayakovskaya

pandora stations like yacht rock

Save the best for last? Depends on your aesthetic but Mayakovskaya is considered by many to be the most beautiful in the entire Moscow Metro system. Just look at that art deco beauty! The entire station has a bit of a different vibe than any others featured on this list so far, which is quite intentional by the station's designer. The inspiration was pulled from the literary works of a famous Russian poet who explored the concept of a "future" Soviet Union. The sleeker lines, stainless steel, and pink accents are a completely different world than many of the other stops in the system.

pandora stations like yacht rock

The theme of this station is called the "24 Hour Soviet Sky", which admittedly is a bit beyond my grasp as a relatively uninformed art critic. The station features a total of 34 (!!!) ceiling mosaics depicting various futuristic interpretations of Soviet life. The station is named for the Russian poet mentioned before - Vladimir Mayakovsky. His poem "Moscow Sky" is a large inspiration for the overall aesthetic of the station and also features prominently in the surface vestibule of the station.

pandora stations like yacht rock

The station also is a rather historic location in the city. As it is located quite a distance below the surface, it was used as an air raid shelter by notable Soviet leaders. The notorious Josef Stalin gave a famous speech during World War II as they sought shelter from German bombs that were peppering the streets of Moscow above. It was also the very first station utilizing a design dubbed the "deep column" which is now quite common around the globe. If you're a Chicago resident or a frequent visitor to the Windy City you'll recognize this style as it's used in many of the CTA's underground stations in the Loop.

Loving the look of Moscow's Metro so far? Feeling that little tingle in your belly telling you this is something you'd love to see for yourself in person? GOOD! My job here is halfway done! Now let's go over some quick logistical tips to help facilitate your exploration!

pandora stations like yacht rock

Here's a relatively basic map of the Moscow Metro system with English translations for station names. I've circled each of my favorite stations on the map in red. Since I was staying right at the Komsomolskaya station I ended up starting my tour there and simply taking the Brown line (Circle) counter clockwise to Taganskaya and then backtracking one station to head north on the Dark Green (Zamoskvoretskaya) line. Of course your journey will differ depending on where you're starting and whether you'd like to add or substitute other stations to the list. I'll emphasize again that the above were only my favorite six stations - they were not, by ANY means, the only beautiful locales you can stop and enjoy.

Moscow's Metro uses an electronic "tap" payment system that will be familiar to many who've used mass public transit in other major cities across the globe. Single ride tickets currently cost 55 rubles, which converts to about .88 cents in USD. A single ticket is good for a ride anywhere on the Metro system and includes most transfers as long as they are done without exiting the payment barriers. So in theory if you're doing a Metro tour you could buy a single 55 RUB ticket and simply ride the rails from station to station without needing to make any additional payment. This is an excellent value when you consider that many tour companies in Moscow charge upwards of $40 USD for a guided tour of the system. Note that if you're in Moscow for more than a day or two and will be making use of the Metro system, you can opt for a Troika card which allows you to store value and provides discounts on rides. You simply make a deposit of 50 RUB (.80 cents USD) for the card and then can add currency for rides. Using the Troika card reduces the cost of a single ride to 36 RUB (.58 cents USD) and it reduces your need to wait in line at stations to purchase paper tickets. You can return the card at the end of your stay for a refund of the deposit.

pandora stations like yacht rock

There are also option for 1, 3, 7, 30, and 90 day passes but I never used these as the value was minimal to me. I largely prefer to walk between my itinerary stops during a day of exploring if at all feasible. If you're less inclined to walk or simply prefer jetting off to your next sight as quickly as possible, you may want to research the passes.

A few quick tidbits to keep in mind on Moscow's Metro:

The Metro is a living, breathing part of Moscow, so there are definitely times when it will be packed full of people. Standing around marveling at the glorious detail on the ceilings above will likely result in loud huffing or brusque shoulder shoves if you go during the wrong time of day. Common sense says you're least likely to encounter crowds before morning commute (8AM), between work hours (10AM - 3PM), and later at night (after 9:30PM). I didn't do a great job of sticking to this time frame sadly but didn't have any issues. If you're touring during rush hour just make sure you're conscious of your body and not getting in everyone's way.

Moscow's Metro had some of the shortest wait times been trains I've seen in the world. Often times I would see my train taking off as I arrived only to see another train sliding into the station a minute or two later.

There are tons of escalator's in Moscow's Metro system. My five days in the city indicate to me that this is very much a "stand on the RIGHT, walk on the LEFT" city. Muscovites are not afraid to shove you aside if you do not follow etiquette.

I found the often quoted lament of travelers online that "nothing is in English" on Moscow's Metro system to be rather overblown. Or perhaps because I visited just two weeks before the launch of the World Cup things have drastically been improved. Regardless, I would say 90% of the trains I rode on Moscow's Metro had scrolling marquees that informed you of the next station in Russian and English. Announcements on trains were also almost always made in Russian and English. The signage inside the stations were much less visitor-friendly though. Station signs along the walls were almost always only in Cyrillic. Signs telling you which direction each train was moving were also almost never in English. Same for signs telling you which way to exit for various streets and sights. You definitely will want a working knowledge of Cyrillic to translate a bit. The good news is that some letters in English and Cyrillic are the same and picking up the translation for the other letters shouldn't be too difficult. If you're terrible with languages, get the Google translate app. The Russian dictionary is downloadable and has the ability to use your camera to directly translate words into English on your screen. See below for an example of what your phone screen shows just by opening the camera with the Google translate app.

Unfortunately Russia's Metro networks are not strangers to terrorism. Both St. Petersburg and Moscow have seen various bombings on their systems over the years. Security is tight at most stations with agents screening large bags with airport-style x-ray machines and use metal detector wands on many smaller bags as passengers go into stations. I would say that about 70% of the time when entering a Metro station my backpack was "wanded" by a security officer. They simply wave you over and run the wand over your bag. No speaking needed. As long as nothing beeps you can walk on to the gates.

English language usage by Metro staff was virtually nonexistent in my experience. I made my way using my very limited Russian and hand gestures (holding up one finger to indicate one ticket, etc) whenever it was mandatory for me to speak with someone (which was very rarely). Ticket machines in Metro stations all have an option for English.

I'll be honest - Moscow was a fascinating city that took me by surprise. I really wasn't sure what to expect when I arrived and was faced with a city that was charming, beautiful, and charismatic despite some of its shortcomings and gruff personality. The Metro system with its almost dreamlike stations is by far one of the most interesting and worthwhile sights to see when in the city. This is a cannot-miss sight for visitors and I strongly urge anyone with more than one day on the ground in Russia's capital to set half or even a full day aside to explore this treasure.

Moscow Metro: The Complete Guide

The Moscow Metro is busy, but easy to use

Robert Schrader

With nearly 7 million riders per day on its 16 lines, the Moscow Metro is the sixth-busiest metro system in the world as of March 2019. Riding the Moscow Metro, however, does not need to be a stressful experience. In fact, it's by far the easiest and most enjoyable way to get around Moscow, especially since many Moscow Metro stations are veritable works of art. Our guide to the public transportation will teach you how to ride the Metro and more.

How to Ride the Moscow Metro

Here is some essential practical information you need to know to easily and seamlessly ride the Moscow Metro.

  • Fares: Moscow Metro fares start at 55 rubles for a one-way ticket, which is good for five days after purchase. You'll pay more if your journey takes you outside of the central Moscow zones of A and B, though this is not the case for most tourists.
  • How to Pay: Cash is the only way to buy a one-way ticket. However, if you have Apple Pay or Samsung Pay, you can tap your phone directly at the ticket gate and enter using NFC technology. You can also use both mobile payments and credit cards to top-up your reloadable Troika card.
  • Routes and Hours: The Moscow Metro has 13 lines that snake and criss-cross the city, plus outer and inner loop lines that string them together, as well as a monorail. The Moscow Metro is open from approximately 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m., and trains run with a frequency that can range between 1 and 7 minutes.
  • Service Alerts: Download the official MosMetro app on the AppStore or Google Play .
  • Transfers: Regardless of how you pay to enter the Moscow Metro, you can transfer to any of the core lines plus the Moscow Monorail without passing through an additional ticket gate. If you wish to transfer to bus lines, airport trains or other rail services, paying with Troika or your mobile device might be more convenient.
  • Accessibility: Although Moscow Metro is impressive and modern in many ways, it is not very accessible . Visitors who use wheelchairs should try to avoid the subway and take aboveground transportation instead.

Beautiful Moscow Metro Stations

The Moscow Metro has achieved internet notoriety — and not just because of how busy it is. Several Moscow Metro stations are distractingly beautiful, including:

  • Aviamotornaya: Brilliant gold themed to the flight of Icarus.
  • Komsomolskaya: Bright yellow ceilings and murals chronicling Russia's journey to independence.
  • Mayakovskaya: Art Deco, featuring mosaic ceilings and pink marble floor
  • Park Pobedy: Modern station (built in 2003) with colorful murals; one of the deepest metro stations in the world (276 feet below ground!).
  • Ploschad Revolutsii: Constructed in 1938 at the height of Soviet pride, this station is home to bronze statues that locals still rub for good luck.

Although it's technically legal to take pictures within the Moscow Metro, guards might approach you if you spend too long photographing a particular station, or use professional equipment like a tripod. Be as discreet as possible to avoid an uncomfortable confrontation!

Other Moscow Public Transit

In addition to the (mostly) subterranean transport offered by the Moscow Metro, Russia's capital is home to a number of aboveground transport options. This includes a large network of buses, as well as trams and "trolley buses." While these are all cheaper than the Moscow Metro, they also require some command of Russian to use; the ordinary buses are also subject to sitting in Moscow's terrible traffic.

In terms of payment, your Moscow Metro ticket isn't valid for transit to any other form of transit, though a Troika card will allow you to do so seamlessly. Likewise, while the various Aeroexpress trains (between Sheremetyevo Airport and Belorussky Station, Domodedovo Airport and Paveletsky Station and between Vnukovo Airport and Kievsky Station) feature modern vehicles and offer fast, reliable connections to Moscow's major airports, these lines are not considered to be part of the Moscow Metro system.

As noted earlier, the Moscow Metro is technically organized by "Zone," with the center of Moscow being occupied by the "A" and "B" zone. Again, you shouldn't worry too much about this. If you're hanging out in the parts of the city, you probably speak enough Russian to be able to ask a local for advice!

Taxis and Ride Sharing Apps

The bad news? It is exceedingly unlikely that a taxi drive in Moscow will speak English. The good news? Uber works in Moscow as of March 2019, which means that if you have the app installed on your smartphone (and a Russian SIM card, which you can pick up at Moscow Airport), your next Moscow ride is basically a matter of plug-and-play.

Russia also has a number of homegrown ride sharing apps, though these aren't as ubiquitous as Uber — they also don't have good English-language interfaces. If you're interested in learning more about them, in any case, be sure to visit the websites of InDriver or Taxi Maxim . Keep in mind that many of these applications require Russian credit cards, or a Russian bank account to pay for rides.

Security-wise, the technological aspect of using ride sharing apps in Russia makes them relatively safe. On the other hand, taxis have a dodgy reputation at best. If you do end up needing to take a taxi in Moscow, make sure to use a registered car. The ones waiting at the airport stands are generally legitimate; within the city limits, try and have your hotel call a taxi to be safe.

Renting a Car in Moscow

Traffic in Moscow is reliably awful, to say nothing of how difficult navigating the city's serpentine network of ring roads and one-way streets can be. However, if you do want to rent a car in Moscow (or in Russia, more generally) there are some facts you should keep in mind.

Documentation wise, it's not officially necessary to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) — your US driver's license will work, at least if you plan to drive in Russia for less than six months. However, it might serve you well to get an IDP (you can apply at your local AAA office) for peace of mind. In Russia as in the US, you drive on the right side of the road; gas costs about 40 rubles per liter, or about $2.40 per gallon.

Another potential downfall of renting a car of Russia is the threat of interactions with Russian traffic police. While this doesn't put you in any mortal danger, there is a chance you'll have to bribe your way out of any confrontation, which outside the center of Moscow or other Russian cities will almost certainly necessitate some Russian language or body language skills.

Tips for Getting Around Moscow

Regardless of whether you take the Moscow Metro or any of the other transportation options listed here, these general tips for getting around Moscow will serve you well:

  • Moscow's city center is very walkable. Unless you're visiting on a bitterly cold day during the middle of winter, many of Moscow's attractions are close enough together that you could walk. For example, you can easily walk from Red Square to Gorky Park, Bolshoy Theatre , Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts , the Kremlin or simply along the Moskva River.
  • All roads lead to Red Square. Although Moscow is not a grid-pattern city, it is relatively organized. The majority of major roads start and end at Red Square; the rest are circular ones that connect the "spokes" from Red Square. With this basic idea in mind, it's pretty difficult to get lost in Moscow!
  • Moscow's awful traffic means that rail is usually the quickest option. Even if the physical distance between two places is shorter by car, traveling via the Moscow Metro is probably going to be quicker.
  • English signage in Moscow has greatly improved over the years. On the other hand, familiarizing yourself with the Cyrillic alphabet before your trip to Russia probably wouldn't be a bad idea. If you need to push someone out of the way (spoiler alert: you probably will!), say izvineetye (sorry) to excuse yourself.
  • Petty theft is common, especially during rush hour. Wear your backpack in front of your body, and don't keep large amounts of cash (or your smartphone!) in your back pocket. Hide any conspicuous signs of wealth to avoid being a target!

The Moscow Metro is easy to use—once you get the hang of it. After all, more than two billion trips take place across its rails every year. If it were difficult, this simply wouldn't be possible! Want to learn more about things to do in Moscow? Make sure to check out this guide to Red Square , which is both the geographical and cultural heart of Moscow (and arguably Russia).
