SEATTLE -- An incredible, 315-foot, $160-million super-yacht is docked in Seattle's Lake Union. It is believed to be one of the largest, if not the largest, yacht to ever enter Lake Union. According to the Puget Sound Business Journal, the Vava II is owned by Swiss-Italian multibillionaire Ernesto Bertarelli and his wife, Kristy. The PSBJ says the yacht has six decks, a swimming pool and rooms for 36 guests and almost that many crew. It costs a half-million dollars just to refuel this yacht. The PSBJ said the yacht is stopping at Seattle for repairs and provisions and may be headed to Alaska for the summer after having come from Hawaii.

A superyacht measuring 314 feet long and owned by billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli and his wife, a former Miss U.K., docked in Lake Union Friday.

The VAVA II, reportedly in Seattle to refuel, is the 34th-largest yacht in the world, according to Boat International, a media group that serves the superyacht industry.

VAVA II, the largest privately owned yacht to be built in the United Kingdom, cost $160 million, features a helicopter landing pad, a swimming pool and six decks. It can accommodate 36 guests.

A Washington comparison: The yacht is longer than seven of the 23 Washington State Ferries.

Bertarelli, 48, is a Swiss/Italian pharmaceutical entrepreneur who inherited the biotech company Serono after his father’s death in 1998.

His net worth is $12.2 billion, according to Forbes. His wife, Kirsty Bertarelli, 42, was crowned Miss U.K. in 1988 and is one of Britain’s richest women, according to the Daily Mail.

VAVA II’s recent ports of call were Honolulu and Port Townsend, according to Marine Traffic, a website that tracks maritime vessels’ locations and travels.

The VAVA II went through the Ballard Locks Friday afternoon without any issues, a Locks official said, though onlookers said it did almost hit the side of the chamber a few times.

Though it dwarfs the sailboats and dinghies often seen on Lake Union, the VAVA II isn’t the largest yacht to dock in Seattle waters. That prize likely goes to The Serene, a $330 million yacht owned by Russian vodka distributor Yuri Scheffler, which was moored in Elliott Bay in August 2013. The Serene is about 124 feet longer than the VAVA II.

It’s unclear how long the VAVA II will be in Seattle.

The yacht has a fuel capacity of 115,043 gallons, which provides a maximum range of 5,000 nautical miles at 14 knots.

According to the Daily Mail, refueling costs the billionaires $400,000.

Built-in 2020 by Nobiskrug , ARTEFACT yacht is an incredibly unique and innovative yacht that has taken over the boating industry.

The technology used in this 80-meter-long yacht has created an environmentally conscious ship, earning it multiple awards including Motor Yacht of the year 2021.

Although ARTEFACT was the creation of a family’s dream, the driving forces behind this groundbreaking technology were Mike Lazardis and Captain Clark.

This engineer and yacht captain worked together to combine their engineering knowledge and insight of the ocean.

They knew the ARTEFACT yacht needed to be something exceptional, while maintaining that home-like feel the family was seeking.

Specifications

The ARTEFACT yacht reaches a max speed of 17.5 knots with a range of over 6,000 nautical miles and is powered by 2 Caterpillar engines.

It is quite large and can hold about 12 guests and 24 crew members. 

ARTEFACT includes solar panels and a large battery storage system to prevent the constant use of internal combustion engines.

This allows the yacht to move quietly so as to not disturb marine life.

It also does not need to drop an anchor to hold position lessening any damage to the sea floor.

Even the water used on the ship does not go to waste – any wastewater is recycled and used later as technical water.

These may seem like simple changes, but they make a significant impact on lessening the environmental effects that most yachts can have. 

Designed by Gregory C. Marshall and Siamak Hariri, this spectacular structure features a futuristic look that is both gorgeous and functional.

With all of the glass used, the glass itself had to be specifically shaped in a way to minimize the transfer of vibrations and sounds that happen with glass. 

The open-space design allows passengers to get breathtaking ocean views at any spot on the ARTEFACT.

Not only will they see beautiful sunsets, but seeing more of the horizon actually helps with motion sickness.

An issue that some of the family members who own the ARTEFACT yacht ironically struggle from.

If you thought the ARTEFACT’s exterior was magnificent, wait until you see the inside!

Beautifully designed by the famous Reymond Langton , the interior has a spacious and home-like feel that makes you forget you are in the middle of the ocean.

When the ARTEFACT yacht interior was initially designed, the team built a full-sized model in an empty warehouse to physically plan out how everything would be placed.

They used construction wrap and pieces of wood to create the models of each room including the owner’s deck, the bridge, and even the special Tai Chi room. 

The ARTEFACT yacht has been sailing the waters since early 2020 when it left its home in Germany.

Its spectacular design and innovative use of technology have brought it much attention.

Many believe that its success will start a chain reaction in the yacht-building industry, creating more of a focus on environmental impact.

It will definitely be interesting to see how yachts will evolve and change with ARTEFACT as their inspiration.

The 9 Best Things to Do at Lake Union in Seattle

In a city filled with lakes and surrounded by the Puget Sound, Lake Union stands out. For one, the lake is located right in the middle of downtown Seattle, close to everything. And while it’s not as massive as Lake Washington, Lake Union is filled with ways to enjoy Seattle’s unique maritime culture—from kayaking to seaplanes to hanging out by the shore at a park or restaurant.

Go Kayaking and Stand Up Paddleboarding

Kayaking and paddleboarding are some of the cheapest and easiest ways for just about anyone to get out on the water, and Lake Union is a great place to rent either watercraft and go. While taking these smaller water vessels on the open Puget Sound takes a bit of skill to navigate swells and currents, Lake Union is calmer (though, you’ll have boat wakes to contend with, but a quick lesson from your place of rental can help you know what to do).

Plus, the slower pace of kayaking allows you to take in the sights. There’s a lot to see—enjoy views of the city and the Space Needle, watch seaplanes land, paddle past some houseboats or sailboats and in general enjoy the urban appeal. Feeling adventurous and have your rental booked for a while? You can venture into the Ship Canal, too. Just make sure you’re clear on boating etiquette (ask at the rental shop if you aren’t) as Lake Union is filled with plenty of people out on the water. Rental places are located on Westlake and Fairview Avenue and include Northwest Outdoor Center and Moss Bay .

Take a Cruise or Rent a Boat

If kayaking or paddleboarding aren’t for you, no worries. There are lots of ways to get out on Lake Union without having to paddle your own water vessle. Ride the Ducks , the famous amphibious vehicles you’ll see touring around Seattle, take a dip in Lake Union as part of their land and water tours. The tours are silly and comedic and perfect for families. Outside of cruises, you can also rent all kinds of boats, traditional and non. You can even rent the world’s only hot tub boats on Lake Union!

Visit the Center for Wooden Boats

Yet another way to get out on the water at Lake Union is to venture to the Center for Wooden Boats where you’ll find options… wooden boat options. If you want a cursory overview of what it’s like to go out in one of the center’s wooden boats, show up for a free Sunday public sail. If you want to delve a bit deeper, the center offers adult and youth sailing lessons. Finally, you can rent a variety of watercraft. If you have no experience on the water at all, anyone can rent a rowboat or pedal boat. If you’ve kayaked or canoed before, you can rent those. Or if you have some sailing experience, you can even rent a sailboat here.

Explore Gas Works Park

Gas Works Park is a great all-around urban park with stellar views of the city skyline, the lake and some interesting appeal of its own to boot. The park is on the former site of the Seattle Gas Light Company gasification plant, and still has the ruins of the plant—the only remaining coal gasification plant in the entire country. The bulk of the plant’s remains are fenced off, but are some of the best photo opportunities in the city.

Other parts of the plant have been tidied up and colorfully painted and are now located in a play area where kids (and adults too!) can climb on them and explore. The park is also a great place to fly a kite on the kite flying hill that gets plenty of wind. Gas Works Park plays a role in a few major events, too—it’s the location for the Seafair Summer 4th July 4th celebration each year and an amazing place to watch fireworks.

Have Lunch With a View

Where there is shoreline in Seattle, there are restaurants, and Lake Union is no exception. Most of the restaurants along its shoreline are nestled on its south end near the South Lake Union neighborhood. Notable examples include Daniel’s Broiler (an upscale steakhouse), Chandler’s Crabhouse (upscale seafood with a focus on all things crab), Duke’s Seafood & Chowder (a local chain known for their range of chowders and fish and chips), The White Swan Public House (pub-style atmosphere and food, but with an upscale twist) and I Love Sushi on Lake Union (sushi!). All five restaurants have a view.

Walk the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop

The Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop is a six-mile loop trail that connects points of interest around the lake, including Gas Works Park and Lake Union Park, the Museum of History and Industry, and there are a number of restaurants along the path too. It’s perfect for a jog or a stroll.

Take a Ride on Kenmore Air

Hang out on Lake Union long enough and you’ll spot seaplanes taking off and landing. Kenmore Air operates one of its terminals on the lake. You can take off from Lake Union and visit the San Juans, Victoria or the Inside Passage, but the finest way to get a different view of Lake Union and the rest of Seattle is to take the Seattle Scenic Seaplane Tour. On the 20-minute tour, you’ll see the University of Washington campus, downtown Seattle and Seattle’s stadiums, and many more sights around town… but from the air.

Visit Lake Union Park and MOHAI

Perched right on the water and within Lake Union Park, the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) is one of Seattle’s top museums and worth a visit. The museum’s eclectic exhibits tell the story of local history and industry, with a broad definition of industry. Exhibits delve into the history of Seattle, and include cool local artifacts like the first commercial plane built by Bill Boeing, the neon R from the Rainier Brewing Company, and a very cool World War II-era periscope that serves up views of downtown Seattle.

If you remember the movie Sleepless in Seattle from the late 1990s, you likely have a vision of houseboats to go with it. The houseboat in the movie was in the community of floating homes on Lake Union. While you can’t exactly stroll up to the houses to take a look, you can paddle by if you rent a kayak or other boat, or watch for tours of the homes that happen every few years.

“Women's Day” on Thursday, April 25 celebrates women’s growing involvement in boating. All are welcome, but women can purchase discounted tickets - $10 online or $11 at the door; valid for admission on Thursday, April 25th.

Show hours are Thursday and Friday (April 25-26), 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday (April 27), 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday (April 28), 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is $22 for adults 18 and over, $5 for teens ages 13-17, and is free for children 12 and under. Tickets can also be purchased through the show’s website including discounted adult tickets ($20) and a multi-day “All Access Pass” for $35, available exclusively online at boatsafloatshow.com.
