Some Thoughts on Boat Biminis

In sunny climes, sail boat biminis are essential to provide shade to the cockpit, thus preventing the occupants from getting too crispy. In their simplest form, biminis are made up as a canvas canopy supported by a folding tubular stainless steel frame, with the whole shebang held in place by adjustable webbing straps fore and aft.

When the boat is heeling, and the sun's on the windward side, sidescreen extensions hooked to the guardrails will return shade to the cockpit.

But few sailboat cockpits are designed with future addition of boat biminis in mind, the ergonomics associated with winch and helm positions taking priority.

Sail boat biminis can be most awkward to retro-fit, so if it is to work well a lot of thought will need to go into its design. For example...

Sail Boat Biminis as an Extension to the Sprayhood?

Most UK sailboats sport a wide sprayhood for fairly obvious reasons. A relatively simple but effective boat bimini can be fashioned by attaching the forward edge of a suitably shaped piece of canvas to it. The after edge, stiffened by a batten, can be supported by the backstay if the mainsheet is forward of the cockpit, with the corners tensioned by webbing straps clipped to the coaming.

Otherwise boat biminis must be supported by a frame attached to the cockpit coaming such that it is cleared by the mainsheet. This type of bimini can often be developed by the addition of zip-on or roll-down back and sides, to fully enclose the cockpit when in harbour.

The downside of this approach is that it will be necessary that the windows in the sprayhood can be zipped out to provide some airflow through the cockpit. The zips will be an area of weakness, and will eventually leak.

Incidentally, our American friends call our sprayhood a dodger, and what we Brits call cockpit dodgers, weather-cloths.

Freestanding or Folding Boat Biminis?

A fixed version of a boat bimini can be designed to incorporate a boom gallows, support solar panels and provide extra handholds in the cockpit. But unless the cover is easily removable, it's also there when you don't want it, such as in strong winds. More importantly, if the bimini impedes access to and from the cockpit at all, it is best if it can be removed during the hours of darkness.

On larger yachts, boat biminis can become quite a substantial structure, such that it would be a handful for the crew to lower it at sea. This problem is overcome by making one section of the frame fixed, usually the aft section, so that the remaining frames can fold back to it. This can eliminate some of the difficulties referred to below, but creates additional windage and weight aloft that could be reduced by folding the bimini down flat.

Should Boat Biminis Fold Forward or Aft?

The key considerations here are

• the location of the bimini mounting point in relation to the sheet winches, and
• the position of the mainsheet traveller.

Generally, if it's mounted outboard of the winches it will need to fold aft, astern of the winches, otherwise it will lie on the headsail sheets. If the mainsheet traveller is positioned at the after end of the cockpit, the folded bimini must not foul it, and the mainsheet must be clear of any part of the raised bimini at any point of sail. The position of any runners or checkstays when set up must also be taken into account.

If the boat bimini mounting point is inboard of the winches, then the limitations caused by the headsail sheet leads will not apply. But the bimini will be narrower and the shaded area below smaller. If it folds forward it must not fall across the companionway, or foul a mainsheet traveller mounted at the forward end of the cockpit.

Height, Length and Width?

The maximum height of the bimini is governed by the clearance under the boom when the mainsail is sheeted in hard. But it should not be any higher than necessary or shade when heeled may be reduced. Ideally about 100mm of clearance above head height should be available when sitting out on the coaming, or when standing in the cockpit well.

It should be long enough to protect the helmsman and cover as much of the cockpit as possible, but the longer it is the more steel hoops it will need to support it.

The maximum width will be determined by the position of the mounting points either inboard or outboard of the sheet winches.

Mounting Point, and Fore And Aft Support?

The ideal fore and aft mounting position will be largely dependant on the previous considerations concerning folded position and height, but if you were not yet aware that compromise is a major part of yacht design, you will now become so.

Because, having selected the preferred mounting point;

• the winch handle will foul the support tubing;
• there will be a light fitting in the aft cabin directly below the mounting point bolts;
• access to the underside of the mounting point will be impossible in the cockpit locker;
• if the height is right it won't fold down in the right place;
• if it folds down in the right place it won't go under the boom;
• it folds back against the backstay;
• it's smack in the middle of your favourite sitting-out position.

Some of these problems can be overcome by using sliding fittings at the hinge points and by mounting the whole shebang on cars which slide along lengths of track either side of the cockpit.

But there's no short answer. Just make up a pattern from timber battens or light tubing and play around with the geometry until you get it as "right" as you can.

Adjustable webbing straps attached to each corner will secure the bimini in position but may impair access in and out of the cockpit. Alternatively if space permits, short stainless support struts pinned to the coaming can be used. The pins will be of the quick-release type which will enable the bimini to fold in the same way.

Fabrication of Boat Biminis

Ideally the frame should be fabricated in 25mm stainless steel with stainless steel fittings throughout. Aluminium tubing can be used and is cheaper in the short term, but it is hardly strong enough, will corrode, and any stainless fittings used with it will seize solid after a time.

The canopy is best made from UV-resistant polyester or acrylic canvas, sewn up with UV-resistant thread.

If you possess the necessary skills and equipment to do the welding, tube cutting and bending yourself, then all the other stainless steel fittings can be purchased seperately. Otherwise, I would recommend that you get a stainless steel fabricator to bend the tubes and weld in the end fittings. He will be very pleased to work to your design, as if it doesn't fit it won't be his fault.

The cover is best made from uv resistant polyester or acrylic fabric, sewn up with uv resistant thread. Some yachtsmen favour white fabric, as it reflects the heat. However it can still let the sun's glare through. For this reason we prefer a dark canvas, relying on a through flow of air to dissipate any heat.

Whilst your sailmaker will be happy to make the cover for your bimini, you can save a few pounds by making it yourself. You will need a robust sewing machine though, ideally one with a walking foot and a zigzag stitch facility.

Incidentally, if you do go down the make-it-yourself route, it's worth thinking about incorporating a rain-catcher in your boat biminis.

It was in designing Alacazam's boat bimini that the foregoing issues became apparent.

Only after the best part of a day messing about in the cockpit with timber battens and bits of string did I feel confident to commit to stainless steel tubing.

But now we have a simple, effective, aft folding boat bimini with roll-up sidescreens that takes only a few minutes to put up and take down, and which now ranks alongside the Aries Self Steering Gear as one of the indispensable items of cruising equipment.

Many times the up front cost of a winter cover is substantially high, however if you keep your boat for more than three to five years the cost becomes much lower than shrink wrapping. Custom-Made Hard Top Biminis

I was wondering if there is any information regarding the protocol for replacing canvas with a rigid Bimini/dodger on a small 36-foot catamaran. I could not find a review of solid Bimini replacements. We have strong stainless steel frames. They are fixed with metal struts with no flexible straps. I do want to be able to see the sails from the helm and bulkhead mount. I want to be able to take advantage of roll up clear plastic front and side curtains. Most summers my current set stays in the rolled up position. They have since shrunk enough that they can no longer be fully snapped.

I am looking for some material that is relatively light with strength. Is there any info on the polycarbonate tops such as the Hard to Top system ( www.hardtotop.com )? It seems to be light and strong, translucent. It comes in several panels to make up the necessary width. Is there any other material options that combine light weight and strength? The solid plastic systems seem to be very heavy per square foot.

Because these are semi-custom jobs, we havent done a dedicated review of hard-top Bimini options, but this topic is definitely worth a closer look. Hard tops are so popular among warm-water cruising catamarans that they are standard on most of the boats you see today. Retrofitting one on an older boat, however, deserves some careful thought. Your concern about weight is on target. On a catamaran like yours, the weight of the top and the structure begins to add up quickly-as does cost.

Because the Hard to Top System can be incorporated into an existing Bimini frame, it would appear to be a cost effective option, but wed be concerned about longevity of any plastic, and the translucent nature of the material seems to defeat the purpose of a Bimini, which is to create shade.

A canvas Bimini offers many advantages over a rigid one, especially to offshore sailors. Importantly, you can fold it down or remove it in a gale, when the windage of a permanent hard top can affect the boats trim and balance. And Bimini tops almost always interfere with access to the mainsail. You can usually zip out a panel of a canvas Bimini, or remove it completely as needed.

A hard dodger (as opposed to a Bimini) is less intrusive. Weve seen several custom , lightweight designs with low profiles that provide four-season protection and look terrific. For many boats, a good compromise is a hard dodger top (usually custom made), with canvas sides and clear vinyl front panels. We recently compared three types of popular clear vinyl glazing: Strataglass, OSea , and Regalite (see PS January 2014, How do Different Vinyl Types Compare? ). And this month we look at the long-term results of our canvas test.

To get a better picture of the pros and cons of hard top versus a conventional canvas top, we will begin a survey of various custom shops that offer hard tops and dodgers and compare costs and materials. The more sensible hard Bimini tops that weve seen for catamarans incorporate lightweight cored panels and aircraft-grade anodized aluminum supports. Atlantic Towers in Bayville, New Jersey ( www.atlantictowers.com ) has a number of custom sailboat jobs to its credit. In Southwest Florida, we would recommend JTR Enterprises ( www.jtrmarine.com ), the family-run welding company in Gulfport that rigged the early Endeavours.

Two companies we are familiar with fabricate hard-tops and dodgers using thermoformed ABS plastic: Cruising Hardtops ( www.cruisinghardtops.com ) and Shipshape Canvas ( www.shipshape.canvas.com ). However, as you pointed out, these tops are heavier than comparable designs using cored panels.

Just about any region in the country is home to at least one custom welder/fabricator who can help you come up with design . The aim would be to keep weight minimal without breaking the bank. Wed invite any comments from owners who have retrofitted their boats with hard tops and have advice on this topic.

Bimini and canopies

A bimini is a great cover to give protection from sun and rain. This type of cover tends to be situated aft of the yacht and focuses on the helmsman, though this is not always the case. A lot depends on the boom and how far the boom comes into the cockpit when going up wind. Design options are many and can be the bases of a full enclosure or can be connected to a dodger with infill awning.

Such as the size, shape, any window and door positions and also show you our wide range of colour and fabric samples. This information will then be used to cost your bespoke product.

Measuring using a Proliner

Once you've received your detailed quotation and would like to proceed, (if our measuring service is something you've opted for, our measure will come out to you. We use our portable 3D Proliner equipment that can accurately map any surface shape or product into a digital 3D format. When developed into a 2D or 3D design, it enables you to easily request modifications and improve designs before manufacturing begins.

Our expert design team will draw up your design using our latest CAD programme so you can view images of your desired product in 3D, enabling you to request modifications and approve the designs before your project is manufactured in our workshop by our highly trained technicians. Your unique design will then be kept on file  in case you ever need a replacement, saving you time and money in the future.

One of our designers will draw up your design and email through CAD images where you can check and approve the shape, size and additional features, such as windows and zips. Therefore, you can request any changes before we begin the manufacturing process.

Manufacture

Your product will be cut using the latest CNC technology so you can be confident it will be made accurately. We train all of our machinists to measure accurately and consistently ensure the stitches are finished to a very high standard.

1″ (316) marine grade stainless steel frame. These have a gentle curve in the roof and are designed to shed water. We also design the frame to suit your height requirements and so that it is in keeping with the lines and shape of the boat. All tube fittings are also in stainless steel.

All manufactured in either marine grade canvas - A breathable and heavily water resistant fabric which is also U.V. resistant.  The fabric has a Teflon coating on the outside which repels water and a polyurethane  (acrylic spayed) coating on the inside which, along with being water resistant gives the fabric strength. Or, manufactured in cape grain PVC, a 610gsm PVC with a grained finish and a grey backing.  It is a polyester based, heavy duty, robust fabric which is fully waterproof and has the added benefit of being wipe-able.   ­ We use Marine grade thread on all our products, a strong, heavy duty thread which swells into the stitching to help prevent water ingress.

All of our products are sewn using top quality UV protected, twisted filament, bonded thread. The thread has anti wick properties, along with resistance to rot and mildew and will swell to fill the needle holes. We offer a choice of blue, black or white, this choice also applies to other sewing accessories such as zips, velcro + webbing.

Installation

On completion, your project will be carefully installed by our fully trained fitter, who will guide you through the features of your cover and the optimum methods of maintenance.

Bimini Design Ideas

With regard to canvas, my pet peeve is the zipper. Because they fail before any other fastener and they're usually difficult and expensive to replace. Our dodger has several zippers and they have covers for protection from UV; however, they do age and when they do, it's expensive to replace. The windshield has 2 roll-up sections, each with a zipper, and then there are two zippers on the aft end of the dodger with the plan to connect a section if a Bimini was ever installed, but wasn't. Then there is a zipper, inside, on the front dodger bow which has been replaced even though it is out of the sunlight. The glass also has covers for when the boat isn't being sailed. As for the glass, the roll-up sections kinda hang down a bit when they're rolled up, not a pain but a bit fiddly to deal with. Thread: I've sewn a few things on my wife's Viking sewing machine and used Tecnara thread. It seems to be rough on the eye of the needle. Made covers for the running lights to keep the plastic from crazing (they face south in the slip) and the furler top swivel (to keep dirt and UV off the swivel area) using a naugahyde-type material and Turn-Button type fasteners. Also made a cover for the outboard when on deck (that was a workout). In the future, the plan is to find another solution to the zipper wherever possible. Edit: The window has 2 roll-up sections with a zipper in the middle (and on each side of the two sections). With the traveler in front of the windshield, the main sheet can be hauled in amidships. This is handy to have minimal water coming in through when the spray is going over the coachroof or it is raining. By the way, this is a good thread.

There are some great ideas in this thread. My top take-always so far.... 1. As capta says, full head room fore and aft is nice. I don’t understand why some think it gives better vision if the dodger is lower than the bimini. 2. I like capta’s idea about connecting the bimini frame and dodger frame with a horizontal bar for added strength and a handhold. 3. It’s a good idea to cover zippers in direct sun with a sunbrella flap to preserve them. 4. Zip-in connectors between the bimini and dodger are rarely installed or removed. They are usually always in or always out. Maybe it’s too much trouble. 5. No one has experience with a connector like the Beneteau 38 I describe with straps that make it easy to quickly unzip and fold back the connector. It would be nice if this process were easy for a quick change, like after sunset in the summer when it’s cools off and to be able to see the night sky, or when racing to better see sail trim and the masthead wind vane. 5. Bimini window configurations vary widely but it seems best not to roll up to avoid scratching. It is better to either remove or fold up windows without creasing them. For fold up the lens could be held against the bimini roof with snaps to hold them open for ventilation. 6. I’ll consider using fasteners in lieu of a zipper for the bimini/dodger connection. Keep the comments and ideas coming if you got ‘em.

Nobody has really said what material they prefer for the windows. The two terms Eisenglass and Makrolon are trade names, the first is an acrylic and the second a polycarbonate. Traditionally acrylic is more UV resistant than polycarbonate, but they have a lot of modern formulations that are changing that. Thoughts? dj

So I have had dodgers with the commonly used commericial plastic boat window materials - Strataglass, Regolite and Makrolon. They are all good quality products, sold at different price points, and thickness specific to application (roll-up, fold-down, curve radius, etc). What you end up with depends on your design. Brand of window material is minor, material characteristics and thickness are more important.

What is a Bimini on a Sailboat? And Why You Should Install One

So, you bought your new sailboat and can’t wait to set sail and explore the seas? Or are you thinking of ways to make new adjustments and install new gear on it? As you already know, weather conditions play a crucial role in sailing. Therefore, it is important to install some kind of protection on your boat so as not to get sunburned, wet, overheated, and drained. Because if you head out on the water without proper protection from natural phenomena this will likely put you at risk. So, installing a bimini top on your boat is a great choice so as to ensure protection from the sun and rain. Let’s see what exactly is a bimini top, how to install it, and some useful info about them. Keep reading!

What Exactly is a Bimini Top?

Bimini tops basically protect you and your sailboat from the elements. They create shade and at the same time retain visibility from the helm and allow the air to circulate. Generally, they’re inexpensive and easy to install on pontoons, powerboats, and sailboats. Most of the time, a bimini cover is an open-air canvas canopy that has sturdy metal frames supporting it. Moreover, it’s waterproof, free-standing, and has an open-front cover that protects several areas of your boat from the sun or rain. They also offer protection from the wind, spray, and saltwater when sailing.

There are biminis that have side panels to the top and are attached with either zippers or snaps. These biminis refer to a fully-enclosed bimini. You can choose between a wide range of colors, sizes, configurations, and fabrics that will suit your boat. Furthermore, biminis improve your sailboat’s cockpit, deck, and overall appearance. Lastly, accurate width, length, and height measurements are essential before installing a bimini on your sailboat.

What to Consider Before Installing a Bimini Top

• Length: Your bimini’s length can be calculated by measuring the fore and aft area of the mounting point. For instance, a 6ft bimini covers 3ft in front and 3ft behind the mounts. You can also tailor the bimini’s length from 3 to 10ft. Usually an 8 or 10ft bimini is used on pontoon boats.
• Width: Width is the most important measurement to take for installing a bimini. Your bimini’s frame width is estimated by measuring between the points where the mounts are connected to the gunwales. Remember, that this measurement is not equal to the boat’s beam. Widths are available in 6” ranges and frames can extend to 3″.
• Height: Installing a high bimini means that you’ll have more headroom, especially in boats with low gunwales. In order to ensure an accurate height measurement, you can stand inside the boat and measure the vertical distance upward from the mounting points. Like this, you’ll determine how much headroom you can have. For instance, a pontoon boat uses a taller top whereas a ski boat will normally have a shorter bimini.
• Fabrics: Always choose the bimini’s fabric according to the weather conditions that it will be exposed to. Also, the material has to be waterproof, strong, and able to withstand UV rays, and preferably double-stitched. Fabrics include canvas, vinyl, acrylic, mixed blends, and polyester. Keep in mind that sun exposure deteriorates the fabric’s water repellency and protection from the elements. So, regular maintenance of bimini tops will prolong their lifespan. Always, choose the right fabric treatment that will repel water, prevent staining, and restore UV resistance.

Bimini Configurations

Bimini tops come in two-, three-, and four-bow configurations, as described below. Remember that the maximum distance between the bows is generally 42″ or less. Bear in mind that you have to keep the spread between bows from getting too wide and thus preventing water from puddling between them. Let’s see the basic bimini configurations:

• Two-bow : This configuration goes for jon boats as well as for shorter V-hull. They’re really cheap, lightweight, and provide protection for the whole boat’s area.
• Three-bow : Three-bow configuration suits for V-hull, open deck boats, cuddy cabin boats, center consoled boats, and for all medium-sized vessels.
• Four-bow : Four-bow configuration goes for pontoon, cabin cruiser, and longer center console boats. You can find them at 8ft or more in length and that is why they’re adequate for longer vessels.  

Bimini Top Materials

In case you’re sailing in humid and hot climates then you should prefer a breathable fabric with high mildew and UV resistance. However, if you’re sailing in northern climates, where ice or snow is likely to accumulate on your bimini, you have to choose a highly waterproof fabric. Moreover, choose a material color that will match the boat’s hull or superstructure colors.

• Woven acrylic: This fabric has a soft appearance and is water-resistant. Acrycil can endure UV rays and has excellent fade resistance and strength. However, every few years, the fabric has to be maintained or replaced. Also, woven acrylic is prone to leaking. Therefore, it has to be re-waterproofed after a thorough cleaning. Acrylic tops tend to be more expensive and not really abrasion-resistant like other fabrics. On the other hand, woven acrylic offers great breathability and resistance when exposed to the elements.
• Vinyl: Vinyl fabrics for bimini tops, like Stamoid, are basically vinyl-coated fabrics. This type of fabric is highly preferred by sailors because when there’s too much water on top they immediately lead it for runoff from the sides. This material is durable, easy to clean, and has a long lifespan. A great advantage is that the composite’s vinyl component is highly water-resistant thus can withstand the rigors of the sea. It’s also less expensive than woven acrylic. However, vinyl biminis aren’t breathable.
• Polyester: Polyester fabrics such as Top Gun, are solution-dyed fabrics and can excellently withstand exposure to UV-rays. Polyester bimini tops are strong and resist stretching thus they always maintain their shape. They tend to fade faster than other materials but are more abrasion resistant and water repellent. 

Threads, Frames and Fittings

Generally, UV rays, rain, moisture, and other elements can damage the thread. And that’s why the thread that holds the bimini can be a weakness in the whole system. So, always choose a high-quality thread, like Tenara, that may be expensive but has a long lifespan and is extremely durable.

As for the bimini top frames you can choose between stainless steel or aluminum ones. Stainless steel is a sturdy material, corrosion-resistant, and more expensive than aluminum. Moreover, due to stainless steel strength, you can sail at high speeds and upwind without worrying about it falling apart. On the other hand, if you’re sailing in freshwater environments, aluminum is what you should choose and is generally more economical than stainless steel. Keep in mind that aluminum tubings have to be anodized in order to resist pitting and corrosion.

Fittings hold the bimini’s tubes and should always be made of high-quality stainless steel. Stainless steel fittings are durable and extremely strong; that’s why they’re always more expensive than others. For instance, coated brass fittings are cheap but they aren’t corrosion-resistant and are prone to breaking or deforming.

Bimini Tips for Maintenance

• Once a month, check all deck fittings to ensure they’re tight enough.
• Once a month, check screws and straps in order to see if the frame and canopy are properly secured to the boat.
• Remove debris and dirt regularly from the fabric using a hose and then brush it with a soft sponge and biodegradable soap.
• Depending on your bimini’s fabric, it’s advisable to remove the bimini when sailing over 30 knots. This is because some fabrics are unable to withstand high speeds.
• Never leave the bimini top up year-round. Fold your bimini down when not in use and consider purchasing bimini boots in order to store the cover and protect it in the long-term.
• Make sure that hold-down straps are tight. There should be minor or no slack at all in the hold-down straps when they’re attached to the gunwales.
• When trailering consider folding the bimini to its lowest profile and then stow it in the storage boot.
• A good tip for cleaning is to use a solution of lukewarm water and biodegradable soap. Then rinse thoroughly and allow it some minutes to dry. Moreover, a marine-grade fabric or a vinyl cleaner can efficiently remove dirt and stains.
• In some cases, the combination of the bimini size, the boat’s position and weight, and the wind’s direction and strength might affect the boat handling. This is because the top tends to act as a kite which is a totally unsafe condition.
• Make sure that the bimini’s position allows for 360-degree visibility from the helm, when deployed or stowed. It’s crucial to have a clear vision to the stern, forward, and to port in order to ensure safe operation.  

So, why you should install a bimini top on your sailboat?  Because bimini tops offer overall protection from the elements without enclosing your boat. Having a bimini top will provide you shade and protection both for you and for your sailboat’s cockpit and other areas. Biminis can be adjusted and you can also choose from a wide variety of sizes, fabrics, colors, configurations, and characteristics. They can also be mounted in different places on the boat so as to provide as much shade as possible. They can be deployed and folded down quite easily when needed. Additionally, you can use bimini boots for efficient storage so as to keep the canopy protected. So, installing a bimini is worth the investment especially if you’re sailing for most time of the year. Wish you safe and shady voyages!

Part Three: Biminis, Dodgers and Pilot Houses

The essence of a Kraken cockpit

Come rain or shine, storm or calm the helmsman and crew need to operate the yacht from the cockpit and the bimini is there to provide shelter in all weathers. Yet on so many yachts, the bimini appears to be an afterthought; a ramshackle marquee secured by zips, straps, clips and hinged pieces of stainless steel tubing that bite your fingers and is more suited to protecting smokers outside a pub than ocean sailors in mid-Atlantic. So to prevent sailors flying away like Mary Poppins, Kraken Yachts’ chairman, Dick Beaumont, first asked himself ‘Why have a folding bimini, especially if it’s to be deployed in all weathers?’ The answer was; don’t, so for his yacht White Dragon , Kraken’s Flagship, he designed a fixed and rigid soft top bimini that is strong enough to withstand heavy weather whilst offering the crew better protection and which improves the aesthetics and functionality of the whole cockpit area.

After testing it in all weathers during his 12 month, 35,000 nm trip from Hong Kong to Turkey, the design was fully approved.

Other than racing yachts, I can’t remember being on a boat which either didn’t have a bimini or which was being prepared for one. They are so important for protecting you and the crew from wind, water and sun.

Standard Bimini

Our criticisms of the standard bimini are:

Their primary function is to give protection from wind, rain, wave and sun until it has to be folded away because its to windy, which of course is when you need it the most to keep the cockpit crew dry and out of the wind and spray.

• They are incongruous with the shape and design of the yacht and look like an afterthought, which invariably they are. 

2. They flap and rattle as the wind rises.

3. They leak at the connecting zips between the two parts of the bimini and dodger.

4. Due to their shape and lack of tension, it’s not practical to fit side screens.

5. Solar panels have to be removed if they are to be folded down.

6. They are vulnerable to strong winds so you will forever worry if your bimini will survive the mean-looking clouds on the horizon. And when you do decide to take it down it’s always an intricate dance with zippers and tensioning straps leaving you with a collapsed clothes’ airer type of structure sitting somewhere in the aft of your cockpit.

If I sound negative about folding biminis it’s because on one particular delivery trip from Gdynia in Poland to Carteret in France we continually had to collapse and then erect the thing again as the squalls went through, to prevent it taking off. 

The dodger is less obtrusive than the folding bimini but has major drawbacks:

It only covers a small portion of the cockpit leaving the crew, and particularly the helmsman, exposed to the elements. 

It is low, necessitating crew to stoop under it and descend the companionway.

It impairs forward vision when it’s folded down.

Regardless of the usability and construction shortcomings and the very questionable aesthetics, folding biminis and dodgers are popular as cockpit protection is essential for a blue water cruiser.

Kraken Yachts’ Bimini

Our new design solves all the problems identified above and has the added benefit of an overhead handrail that is used every time crew moves from the cockpit to the side decks. 

To overcome the issues of retro designing we integrated the bimini at the early stages of deck design. That way it all looks right because it is part of the boat and not an add-on.

For new Kraken owners there are three options to choose from:

1. Fixed Rigid Soft Top Bimini

• Creates a ‘clean and sleek’ look on deck.
• Is fitted with removable clear panels forward and both sides so you can fully open the enclosed cockpit in a matter of minutes.
• Allows for installation of solar panels.
• Rigid fixed construction will stand up to any weather conditions.
• Has bracing straps which may be fitted in very heavy weather.
• Easy to clean without needing to be removed.
• Provides full headroom throughout the cockpit.

A rigid flexible bimini is made up of a stainless steel frame with Ferrari Stamoid fabric stretched over it. A fixed windshield on the coachroof provides constant protection from rogue waves while removable clear plastic screens can be configured to provide the right amount of shelter from the elements whilst retaining full uninterrupted forward vision. 

We use Ferrari Stamoid because of its excellent stretch properties which when tensioned drum tight eliminate all flapping and sagging. That same material was used on White Dragon and after 3 years there is no sign of deterioration.

2. Hardtop Bimini with integrated windscreen

Some clients have requested a hard top bimini others have requested a pilot house style. It really depends where you are expecting to spend the majority of time cruising.

We have two further options:

• Composite construction to keep the weight as low as possible.
• Increased resistance to mechanical damage.
• Clear flexible panels in the front and sides which are removable to allow full airflow from all sides.          
• Solar panel compatible. 
• Follows the design lines and angles of the saloon deck and cockpit.
• Has bracing straps that may be fitted in very heavy weather.
• Allows full headroom throughout the cockpit.

3. Hard Top Pilot House

• Is more enclosed than rigid Bimini.
• Can have a flexible dual height extension and drop down side to cover and enclose the cockpit fully.
• Solid plexiglass panels have the benefit of staying 100% clear and not obstructing vision. 
• Centre windows open to provide better airflow into the cockpit.
• Has reduced headroom.
• Can only accommodate reduced solar panels.

We think the best all round solution is the soft top rigid bimini because it is less obtrusive than either the hard top bimini or the pilot house, has less windage,  offers good overhead hand holds for climbing in and out of the cockpit, gives maximum space to mount solar panels on the top, can have multiple clear panels to give good vision of sails and the mast and can enclose a bigger area for when the weather is poor.

Ultimately it’s the owners choice and it depend a lot on where the yacht will be based. In higher cold latitudes the pilot house version with an additional soft top extension might be considered a preference. However if you do go to the tropics the air flow restriction will not be ideal and it should be considered that all Krakens can have a forward full vision nav/pilot station where a most of the time on watch can carried out in the warmth and protection of the saloon.

Why the Baltimore bridge stood little chance against a fully loaded cargo ship

As questions surround the collapse of a Baltimore bridge after a containership crashed into it Tuesday, engineering experts say that while bridges have some built-in defenses against collisions, this one was most likely too extreme to withstand.

“Bridges are and should be designed to withstand ship impacts. That’s typical of the design process,” said Sanjay R. Arwade, a professor of civil engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. 

“But for all structures and all engineered systems, there is a possibility that an event will occur that is beyond what the structure was designed for. And this may be one of those situations,” he added. 

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, a roughly 1.5-mile-long steel arch truss bridge, collapsed into the Patapsco River early Tuesday after a containership struck it. Several vehicles crashed into the water, and one of the country’s busiest ports shut down.

An unknown number of workers with Brawner Builders Inc.   were repairing concrete ducts when the ship, called the Dali, hit a support pillar. Six employees are presumed dead .

Key Bridge was ‘fairly unprotected'

Arwade said design codes for modern bridges stipulate "what sort of loads it has to be able to resist.”

“Whenever a design code is written, decisions have to be made about what the most extreme conditions are,” he said. 

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the bridge was "fully up to code."

But the Key Bridge was built in 1977, and bridge design and technology have improved since then.

"Since the 1970s, we have a lot of advancements," Sameh Badie, a professor of engineering at George Washington University,  told NBC Washington. But he said, "I saw today a couple of videos before the collapse, and it seems to me, structurally wise, it was very safe."

Roberto Leon, a structural engineer at Virginia Tech, said that while engineers try to account for “extreme events” during the design and construction process, “when this bridge was built, there were no ships of this size.”

“This type of load was not really considered,” he said. “So the bridge was, I would say, fairly unprotected.”

Retrofitting older bridges could cost millions

Officials have not specified what type of protective infrastructure, if any, the Key Bridge had. 

Leon said that on a newer bridge, large concrete structures called dolphins are often used to protect the base. Dolphins can form a kind of frame and are designed to take the impact of a vessel and “slow the ship down and redirect it away from the bridge,” he said.

“In some cases, they’re called sacrificial elements, because they might be damaged beyond repair if an event of this type occurs, but of course, they save the bridge,” he added.

John Pistorino, a structural engineer in Florida, said dolphins are in use to protect the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa, Florida, which was reopened in 1987 , seven years after it was hit by a freighter. Thirty-five people died after the bridge collapsed into Tampa Bay.

Pistorino, who was involved in the construction of the rebuilt Sunshine Skyway Bridge, described dolphins as walls or guardrails.

“They can be concrete or steel … and they go all the way down to the bottom of the river,” he said. “They’re supposed to protect the abutments.” 

Jacksonville, Florida, Mayor Donna Deegan cited the dolphin infrastructure that's in place to protect the Dames Point Bridge — the only bridge in the city that cargo ships sail under — in a statement Tuesday. She noted that the bridge is also equipped with specialty sensors that provide real-time information about the distance between the water surface and the bottom of the bridge structure over the main channel.

Older and more vulnerable bridges can be retrofitted to add defensive infrastructure like dolphins, Leon said, but building them can cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

“I’m hoping that because of the infrastructure bill that passed, we are going to be able to do projects like this,” he said, referring to the $555 billion infrastructure bill that President Joe Biden signed in 2021. “Putting those into the budget and justifying them is very difficult when you have all kinds of other bridges that are in really sad shape. So it’s just a question of prioritization.”

However, Kevin Heaslip, director of the Center for Transportation Research and a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, said the cost of designing bridges to withstand fully loaded cargo ships like the Dali would “be so high that we wouldn’t be able to have any bridges.”

Government oversight of bridges could increase

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said he has been monitoring the situation in Baltimore. A team of investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board has been sent to the crash site. 

Leon said he hopes what happened in Baltimore will cause port operations to change “quite a bit.” Pistorino said the event may lead legislators to take a closer look at vulnerable bridges in the country and the types of maritime traffic in ports.

“Just like the building collapse in South Florida created a lot of legislation that required a more intimate type of building scrutiny, I think that will happen on the bridges,” he said.

Description.

The start of the ambitious Sunreef 88 Double Deck project was officially communicated during Sunreef Yachts’ press conference at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016. After eight months of intensive work, the shipyard proudly announced the launch of this catamaran with a zealous, sporty look.

An experienced yachtsman switching from a massive motor yacht , the owner decided to commission the Sunreef 88 Double Deck to pursue a more stable navigation style with greater living space. Indeed, a challenging project for the shipyard’s engineering and design teams.

Nonetheless, this journey was destined to keep the promise of delivering a state-of-the art fully customized sailing catamaran from the start. To achieve the goal of building a seaworthy and dynamic catamaran, Sunreef Yachts’ team of naval architects conceived a completely new yacht design which seemed far sportier than the rest.

Same as all yachts within her range, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck too features a mezzanine level inside the saloon and a spacious master stateroom with a panoramic view in the bow part of the main deck. However, her superstructure was granted a more aerodynamic aspect. As a result, the 88-footer emphasis equally on both performance and luxury, offering over 300m² of living space and an outstanding sailing experience.

Despite this, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck remains a family-friendly yacht offering the best of comfort and safety. The innovative composite superstructure of the sailing yacht conceals a smart and functional layout with luxurious accommodations for eight guests and up to five crew members.

Upon the owners’ request, the interior decor of the Sunreef 88 Double Deck features exclusive natural materials: Chambord oak, linen, leather, natural stone, and quartz tiles – all contribute to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the sailing yacht . The feeling of warmth was also achieved through applying numerous orange accents to the interiors – an important color for the owner’s family who consider it to be a symbol of energy.

New Sunreef 92 Double Deck Sailing Catamaran

From the same people who brought you the original Sunreef Yacht, comes the new Sunreef 92 Double Deck , with a new design which not only streamlines the deck house, but tops it with a giant 40 m 2 fly bridge.

This was inspired by similar designs found on other super yacht designs. In collaboration with K-Epsilon and Rivoyre Ingenierie , The Sunreef Naval Architecture Bureau has intensely studied performance and sea capabilities using state of the art CFD, computational flow dynamics to create the ultimate in catamaran luxury.

Using integrated stepped hull chins, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck catamaran increases interior space, without compromising performance. Now this yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests, in up to 5 double luxury suites, as well as a crew of four.

Sunreef’s 92 Double Deck also features a canoe style boom and carbon mast, one of this manufacturer’s specialties. How are they able to accomplish such feats? They added a new mezzanine floor, which includes a coffee table and lounge, located on the port side of the main deck dining area, freeing up more space below for larger cabins and storage space, or even more suites if you prefer.

Because of this innovative design modification, now the owner’s suite occupies two floors of the entire front area of this yacht, with a private luxury office, gym and leisure area on the upper level, with the bathroom, wardrobe and storage area below deck. Each cabin has an extended size, three way access to their King sized beds, with spectacular panoramic sea views. Not only this, but each luxury suite comes with its own separate bath and shower area, large closets, storage lockers, as well as their own air conditioning and a comprehensive entertainment system.

With a LOA of 27 meters, an 11.2m beam, and a 1.6m draft, this super yacht has a 80 ton displacement. It will also be powered by two 405HP 1200 L/3170 Gal engines, and will be able to cruise at speeds up to 15 knots. The 70m 2 cockpit will also include a large dining area, sunbathing mattresses, and diving equipment. Its spacious fly bridge is fitted with a jacuzzi, two wet bars, barbecue, ice makers and even a pair of jet skis. It will also include a tender, hidden in a specially built locker under the main sun pad of the cockpit.

Even though this is only the second of such models, it isn’t hard to see why the Sunreef 92 Double Deck sailing catamaran is on it’s way to be one of the most sought after luxury yachts. Embark on a luxury catamaran cruise adventure out of Ocho Rios, Jamaica that takes adventure to new heights.

Standing on the dock, I pause a moment to let my gaze travel slowly upwards at the gleaming catamaran floating before me. Rocking gently in the calm Caribbean Sea, the beautiful double-decker  Calipsoul  seems familiar yet exciting and new to me all at the same time. I had chosen Island Routes Catamaran Dunn’s River Cruise the last time I was in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It had been the perfect combination of relaxation and excitement that I had been looking for. We had also done the romantic Lovers Rock evening cruise, literally sailing into the sunset together. Making the cruise reservation Both times it had turned out exactly as promised and this time around when I knew I was heading back to Jamaica, I reached out to the wonderfully helpful Island Routes team yet again. I spoke with them about how much I had enjoyed the last catamaran excursion I did with them and shared that this time I would be coming with a group of friends and family of all ages. I had enjoyed the snorkeling aspect of the Dunn’s River cruise so much but it had been fairly short and some of my group said they really wanted to let loose and relax.

They explained that it was like The Dunn’s River cruise minus the climbing, which my mom was happy to hear about, and a lot of time spent exploring the underwater world. Then they told me how great my timing was as they now have a brand new double-decker catamaran! To be honest, I couldn’t quite picture it so I didn’t know what to expect. Standing here, about to step onto the Calipsoul , I am filled with delight as the kids all leap aboard. We aren’t the only family on board that day and as my group is fairly large, coming over on the shuttle service from the Beaches all-inclusive family resort, I had been worried about feeling crowded. Yet, what we discover is the perfect blend of being able to find ample areas for ourselves while also having the opportunity to meet other people as equally excited as we are.

Snorkeling lesson Once in the water, we are directed by the crew, who have joined us, where to swim and, along the way, they make sure to point out coral formations and beautiful fish ensuring we have an amazingly immersive experience (pun intended). I explore for ages and I am very excited as I brought my waterproof camera with me this time and aim to meet my self-imposed challenge of taking an underwater selfie with tropical fish. Although unsuccessful because they move pretty quickly, I still have a blast. Suddenly, someone is tapping me on my shoulder and I pop my head up to see one of the crew members guiding me back to the boat. Making my way back I realize that, as strong a swimmer as I am, I’m pretty happy to have the life vest on as it allows me to keep looking underwater while I make my way back without having to put in too much effort in keeping myself headed in the right direction so all my focus is on the magical world below me. Trampoline for the kids, hammocks for the adults We climb aboard and the teenagers head to the trampoline area (I was told that’s what it’s called). For people who may not normally hang out on a boat, this area serves an engineering purpose but is also a pretty cool place to just hang out on as it’s like a flat stretched-out hammock where you can just lay out and chill. I divest myself of the fins, mask, and vest and realize I’m pretty hungry! Lunch on the ocean Luckily, the food comes out and everyone piles up their plates with tropical fruit, delicious wraps and chips, and salsa, and we head for a sunny spot on the upper deck of the catamaran. We start chatting with other people and decide it’s just about the right time for the rum version of that delicious fruit punch (after all we’re in Jamaica, how can we pass up the delicious rum when no one is driving or diving). My husband opts for a cold Red Stripe instead and leans back to work on his tan. Learning Jamaican dance moves We hear music and a lot of laughter below and realize the trampoline is empty. I decide to leave my husband happily tanning and I follow the music only to discover a full-blown dance class, as the crew is teaching everyone the latest Jamaican dancehall dance moves. Although I feel a little self-conscious when I join in, that quickly fades away as everyone tries their best to match the expertise of the crew. Over on the right, two little girls have their own crew member showing them what to do and they catch on quickly, delighted grins lighting up their faces. I manage to muddle through and I’m pretty sure my sister is going to show these videos to everyone once we get back home for an evening full of a similar level of laughter at my expense. In that moment though, I don’t care. I feel the salt from the sea drying on my skin, my hair is a tousled mess and I’m dancing with my children in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. This, I think, is what happiness is.

First Sunreef 88 double deck catamaran launched

The first hull in the Sunreef 88 range of double deck sailing catamarans has been launched in Gdansk for a European owner, the Polish yard has announced.

This fully personalised multihull superyacht measures 26.82 metres LOA and was styled inside and out by the in-house team at  Sunreef Yachts .

In a statement, the Polish yard added that the design of the Sunreef 88 is “a great display of the shipyard’s non-conformist attitude and a genuine example of an avant-garde sailing catamaran concept”.

Captain Ian Sellers added: "She is a beautifully crafted, fully customised transoceanic catamaran, with superb quality and finish."

The design brief was focussed on three key themes: luxury, performance and privacy. To this end, the Sunreef 88 features more than 300 square metres of living space — an impressive figure for a yacht of this size, proving that bigger isn't always better .

This two-deck sailing yacht will feature an extensive flybridge with a central helm station and plenty of al fresco dining and relaxation spaces. Back aft, the cockpit features a central dining table with seating space for ten guests as well as a second sunbed, making good use of the Sunreef 88's 11.2 metre beam.

The in-house design includes sporty and dynamic exterior lines, as well as a fully customised interior layout. Key features include a mezzanine level in the saloon and a main-deck owner's cabin , which boasts superb views out to sea through panoramic windows.

Auxiliary power comes from a pair of 425hp engines drawing on a total fuel capacity of 8,000 litres, while her total sailplan is in excess of 345 square metres.

Sunreef added that the designers drew inspiration for this single-masted sailing yacht from the 35 metre flagship yacht Che , which was launched in 2010. The Sunreef 88 is the sixth superyacht from the Polish yard, which has also created the Sunreef 102 yacht Ipharra .

The Dali was less than 30 minutes into its planned 27-day journey when the ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday.

The ship, which was sailing under the Singaporean flag, was on its way to Sri Lanka and was supposed to arrive there on April 22, according to VesselFinder, a ship tracking website.

The Dali, which is nearly 1,000 feet long, left the Baltimore port around 1 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday. The ship had two pilots onboard, according to a statement by its owners, Grace Ocean Investment. There were 22 crew members on board, the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement. There were no reports of any injuries, Grace Ocean said.

Before heading off on its voyage, the Dali had returned to the United States from Panama on March 19, harboring in New York. It then arrived on Saturday in Baltimore, where it spent two days in the port.

Maersk, the shipping giant, said in a statement on Tuesday that it had chartered the vessel, which was carrying Maersk cargo. No Maersk crew and personnel were onboard, the statement said, adding that the company was monitoring the investigations being carried out by the authorities and by Synergy Group, the company that was operating the vessel.

“We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected,” the Maersk statement said.

The Dali was built in 2015 by the South Korea-based Hyundai Heavy Industries. The following year, the ship was involved in a minor incident when it hit a stone wall at the port of Antwerp . The Dali sustained damage at the time, but no one was injured.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday after being hit by a cargo ship, with large parts of the bridge falling into the Patapsco River.

At least eight people fell into the water, members of a construction crew working on the bridge at the time, officials said. Two were rescued, one uninjured and one in serious condition. The remaining six are presumed dead.

Her generous headroom, two berths, full galley, and enclosed head are unique on a boat of this size. Her spacious cockpit affords seats long enough for an afternoon nap or additional overnight guests. Sailing or under power she is lively and responsive with a motion reminiscent of a much larger boat. Her ample beam and sufficient ballast make her very stiff without sacrificing valuable draft.

Attabuoy  is in need of general cleaning inside and out and some cosmetic work. The keel will need some minor fiberglass work. The sails are like new. The engine turns over, but has not been operated for a number of years. Take a look and you will fall in love!

Baltimore bridge collapse: at least six missing as Biden laments ‘terrible accident’

Mayor says rescue efforts continuing after cargo vessel hit Francis Scott Key Bridge, sending vehicles into the water

A frantic search-and-rescue effort continued on Tuesday hours after a major bridge in Baltimore , Maryland, snapped and collapsed when a container ship collided with it in the early morning, sending a number of vehicles into the water.

Baltimore fire department officials said at least six construction workers were still missing, after reports that a 948ft Singapore-flagged container ship leaving port on its way to Sri Lanka had crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Jeffrey Pritzker, a senior executive at Brawner Builders, the employer of the construction workers, said Tuesday afternoon that they were presumed dead, given the water’s depth and the length of time since the crash. Pritzker said the crew had been working in the middle of the bridge when it came apart. No bodies have been recovered. “This was so completely unforeseen,” Pritzker said. “We don’t know what else to say. We take such great pride in safety, and we have cones and signs and lights and barriers and flaggers. But we never foresaw that the bridge would collapse.”

A report from the Baltimore Banner earlier said the were construction workers from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico who are in their 30s and 40s, with spouses and children.

Officials added that up to 20 people and several vehicles had fallen into the river and declared it a “mass casualty event”.

A video posted on X appeared to show the vessel striking one of the bridge’s central supports, causing much of the 2.6km bridge to give way as a number of vehicles fell into the Patapsco River below.

Joe Biden addressed the bridge collapse in a public briefing about midday, saying that all indications were that it was a “terrible accident” rather than an “intentional act”.

The president also said he was thinking of those who remained unaccounted for amid the search and rescue efforts around the bridge, a key traffic artery whose destruction is also expected to cause months of travel disruption in a city with more than 575,000 residents.

“We’re with you. We’re going to stay with you as long as it takes,” said Biden, adding that he intended to travel to Baltimore as soon as possible. “You’re Maryland tough. You’re Baltimore strong.”

Officials said the ship issued a mayday as it went off course and seemed to lose power, which Baltimore officials said allowed them to prevent more vehicles from coming on to the bridge. The ship then appeared to catch fire as part of the bridge collapsed over it, sending plumes of thick, black smoke into the air.

Two people have been rescued, with one of them “severely” injured and in critical condition, officials said in a pre-dawn press conference. There were reports that there were workers on the bridge engaged in basic road maintenance when the collision occurred.

The temperature in the river was about 47F (8C) in the early hours of Tuesday, according to a buoy that collects data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

From a vantage point near the entrance to the bridge, jagged remnants of its steel frame were visible protruding from the water, with the on-ramp ending abruptly where the span once began. “All lanes closed both directions for incident on I-695 Key Bridge. Traffic is being detoured,” the Maryland transportation authority posted on X. “I-695 Key Bridge collapse due to ship strike. Active scene,” it later added.

Calls to 911 had come in at about 1.30am, reporting a vessel travelling outbound from Baltimore that had struck a column on the bridge, causing it to collapse, said Kevin Cartwright, the director of communications for the Baltimore fire department. Several vehicles were on the bridge at the time, including one the size of a tractor-trailer.

“Our focus right now is trying to rescue and recover these people,” Cartwright said. He added that it was too early to know how many people were affected but described the collapse as a “developing mass casualty event”.

Cartwright said it appeared that there were “some cargo or retainers” that appeared to be dangling from the bridge, creating unsafe and unstable conditions that were complicating the rescue operation. “This is a dire emergency,” he said.

Matthew West, a petty officer first class for the coastguard in Baltimore, told the New York Times that the coastguard received a report of an impact at 1.27am ET. West said the Dali, a 948ft (290-metre) Singapore-flagged cargo ship, had hit the bridge, which is part of Interstate 695.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed that the vessel was registered in Singapore and said the agency was coordinating with the US Coast Guard and the ship’s management company to help. It also said it would investigate the incident itself.

There were 22 crew onboard at the time of the incident, Singapore said.

The shipping company Maersk said that it chartered the container ship in Baltimore, with the operator named as Synergy Marine Group. Maersk confirmed that there were 22 crew, and said they were all Indian. None of them were Maersk crew or personnel.

It added that there were 4,679 containers on board, roughly half of its 10,000 capacity.

“We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected,” the company said in a statement.

The Dali had left Baltimore at 1am and was heading for the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, according to the maritime data platform MarineTraffic. Synergy Marine Group, the manager of the Dali, confirmed that the ship had collided with one of the pillars of the bridge. It said all crew members, including the two pilots, had been accounted for and there were no reports of any injuries.

“Whilst the exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined, the Dali has now mobilised its qualified individual incident response service,” it said.

The same vessel was also involved in a collision in 2016 in Antwerp, Belgium, according to Vessel Finder and the maritime incident archive Shipwrecklog.

Its bow reportedly scraped the side of the quay while it was leaving port, significantly damaging several meters of the hull, and it was reportedly detained by authorities afterward.

According to Vessel Finder , the weather was fine at the time and the incident was blamed on the ship’s master and pilot on board. There were reportedly no injuries.

The Baltimore mayor, Brandon M Scott, called Tuesday’s collision an “unthinkable tragedy” at a press conference held as dawn broke on Baltimore. “Never would you imagine” seeing the bridge collapse, he added. “It looked like something out of an action movie.”

Asked how long it would take to rebuild the bridge, he said: “The discussion right now should be about the people, the lives, the souls … there are people in the water that we have to get out and that’s the only thing we should be talking about.”

He and the county executive, Johnny Olszewski Jr, said emergency personnel were at the scene and rescue efforts were under way.

Officials added that there was “absolutely no indication that there was any terrorism or that this was done on purpose”.

The Maryland governor, Wes Moore, said in a statement that he had declared a state of emergency.

He said the ship had lost power around the time when the cargo ship hit the Key Bridge, and the crew issued a “mayday” request. Moore said that officials were able to slow the flow of traffic, preventing more vehicles from falling into the water.

“These people are heroes. They saved lives last night,” Moore said, adding that Baltimore was working with an interagency government team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden administration.

Moore added the bridge was “fully up to code” before Tuesday’s accident and that rebuilding the bridge would be a long-term effort.

In a statement, the White House said it was “closely monitoring” the events. “The US Coast Guard is conducting search and rescue for those who remain unaccounted for as a result of the bridge collapse,” it said. “Senior White House officials are in touch with the governor and mayor to offer any federal assistance they need. There is no indication of any nefarious intent.”

It added that “our hearts go out” to the victims and families of what it called a “horrific incident”.

Built in 1977, the bridge spans the Patapsco River, a vital artery that along with the Port of Baltimore is a hub for shipping on the US’s east coast. It is named for the author of the American national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner.

"MAJOR BALTIMORE TRAFFIC ALERT: AVOID I-695 southeast corridor. I-695 Key Bridge collapse due to ship strike," the Maryland Transportation Authority said in an X post on Tuesday morning.

A representative for the Baltimore Police Department told ABC News that "at 1:35 a.m., Baltimore City police were notified of a partial bridge collapse, with workers possibly in the water, at the Francis Scott Key Bridge."

Emergency services teams, including divers and at least two helicopters, responded to the scene, per Baltimore County's police scanner in the hour and a half after the bridge's collapse.

Wes Moore, governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency early on Tuesday.

He said he was working to "quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," per the BBC.

In a news conference later in the day, Moore said that the crew on the ship notified authorities they had lost power.

Moore told reporters that the ship was moving at a "very rapid speed" and that the call to the authorities stopped a greater disaster from occurring, with cars redirected away from the bridge.

He also said the bridge was "fully up to code" and had no structural issues.

Paul Wiedefeld, Maryland's transportation secretary, told reporters that there were workers on the bridge at the time repairing potholes, and that six people were unaccounted for.

The White House said it was "closely monitoring" the situation, and that there was no indication of any nefarious intent.

"Our hearts go out to the families of those who remain missing as a result of this horrific incident," a spokesperson told BI in a statement.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said on X that he had offered the DOT's support to Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott.

The Baltimore Fire Department estimates that up to 20 people people went into the water, the BBC reported .

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per ABC News.

Structural engineer Ian Firth told the BBC that the heavy ship would have struck the bridge support backed by many thousands of metric tons.

"The support is a very, relatively, flimsy structure when you look at it, it's a kind of trestle structure with individual legs," he told the outlet. "So, the bridge has collapsed simply as a result of this very large impact force."

Barbara Rossi, an engineering professor at the University of Oxford, told BI: "According to what I could see online, the bridge has received a huge impact force on one of its supporting structures."

"The impacting force must have been immense," she said.

The Dali is owned by Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm. The firm confirmed in a statement on Tuesday morning that their vessel had struck one of the bridge's pillars, per TradeWinds .

"All crew members, including the two pilots, have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," read the firm's statement.

It had 22 crew aboard, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement .

According to Grace Ocean, the vessel was bound for Colombo, Sri Lanka when the accident took place.

Maersk, the ship's charterer, confirmed that vessel company Synergy Group operates the ship. Maersk's spokesperson told BI in a statement that the company is "horrified" by the events, and added that no Maersk employees were on board.

"We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy," it added.

As of Tuesday morning, authorities warned mariners and drone operators to avoid the waters and nearby airspace.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski, Jr. said in an X post that the authorities "are closely monitoring the ongoing situation at the Key Bridge."

"Our prayers remain with all those impacted," Olszewski wrote.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge opened in March 1977 as the final link in the Baltimore Beltway, according to the MDTA .

It cost $60.3 million to build and is 10.9 miles long, per the MDTA.
