Ilha da Cotia

Take a quick jaunt to Praia Grande for sunbathing on its stunning sandy beach, kayaking in the gorgeous waters, or simply strolling along the coast. Set out for Saco do Mamanguá, home to Brazil’s only fjord, with majestic towering rock walls jutting into the lush rainforest, and then continue to Ilha da Cotia to find a secluded anchorage and take in the panorama around you.

Ilha de Paquetá

Brightly adorned horse-drawn carriages are the only “vehicles” you’ll see, as no cars are permitted in this quaint, leisurely village. For a chance of pace, dine at Chez Dominique, serving up the best French food in the region.

As you make way back toward Ilha Grande, stop off at one of the many islands in the Baía da Ribeira, an idyllic spot to swim or splash around with the yacht’s water toys. Anchor out near Araçatiba, known for its abundant fishing and reflective aquamarine waters that may turn phosphorescent at night.

If weather conditions are favorable, take a counterclockwise turn towards Aventureiro, a rugged bay surrounded by tumbled boulders forming serene pools. Continue to Parnaioca, a nature-lover’s paradise, where a flowing river finds its way down to the unspoiled beach. Cruise around to the tip of Ilha Grande to Palmas and find a serene anchorage, enjoy a cocktail on deck, and take in the beautiful views.

Angra dos Reis

After navigating through this beautiful oasis of more than 300 islands, return to Angra for your ride to São Paulo for some last-minute shopping and dining. Or head to Rio de Janeiro to take in landmarks, such as the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. However you choose to end your journey, it will surely be the perfect finale.

• 2014 - Extensive refit: Main engines underwent a W6, Generators big overhaul, awlgrip paintjob, teak decks, new stabilizers, new chiller units, general service of all engine room equipment.
• 2016 - Brazil was refurbished with complete new ceiling panels, carpets and all new varnish works. Big mechanical works
• 2018/2019 - New deck furniture, All teak resurfaced, Stern repainted, Bridge equipment upgraded & replaced, New floating dock for paddleboards and jetski, replaced interior flooring, new carpets new Crestron system was installed. Main engine injectors were all taken out, tested and overhauled.
• 2022 - Brazil was extended with 4 meters to accommodate a huge beach club & swim platform, brand new CMC fully electric zero speed stabilisers fitted, extended bridge deck with 1.5 meters creatin big socialising space, brand new Generators Kholer 125Kw, electra refit & new MPA system (Tijssen), new deif units for shore power and generators, new passarelle and tender lifting system.

The best time for sailing in Brazil is in the months of April and May, as well as September through the beginning of November . Towards the end of the year  there are an increased number of rain showers. However, immediately after the first ray of sunshine peaks through the rain clouds, Brazil will return to its paradise identity. During the day, pleasant winds blow on shore between four and five Beaufort, while the maximum temperature may rise to as high as 35° Celsius (95° Fahrenheit). However, the yacht charter area off the Costa Verde provides refreshing breezes. Apart from the heat of the day, there are weak winds in the area and in which swells occur rarely, making for smooth sailing in this part of Brazil. The water temperature varies between 17° Celsius (63° Fahrenheit) in the winter and a comfortable 28° Celsius (83° Fahrenheit) in the summer. However, the rule of thumb for sailing in Brazil is always: in summer go south and in winter go north. Brazil is a huge country, therefore it has a considerable climatic variety. There are some remarkable differences from region to region. Northern Brazil is crossed by the Equator. So in much of the country, the seasons are reversed in comparison with Europe or North America. There is no winter season and no period in which it is particularly dry.

The country can be divided into three main climatic regions. Equatorial, with year-round rains in the Amazon Basin and the coastal area. Tropical with a dry season in the vast central area and the northern portion). Finally the almost Mediterranean area, with temperate winters and hot summers in the south. In the summer the average temperatures range from 30 to 33 °C. In the winter, the normal average temperatures range from 10 to 20 °C.

The bodies of a thrill-seeking Canadian couple were found in a life raft Wednesday — nearly six weeks after they left on a sailing trip across the Atlantic Ocean, according to a report.

Brett Clibbery, 70, and Sarah Justine Packwood, 54, apparently abandoned their yacht and perished on a life raft before washing up on Sable Island, nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” the Vancouver Sun reported.

Canadian authorities have not officially identified the tragic pair as the victims, but told the outlet that the 10-foot life raft was believed to be from a larger vessel named Theros — the same eco-friendly boat the couple had routinely documented on their travel blog account.

Clibbery and Packwood set sail on the 39-foot yacht from Halifax on June 11 with plans to cross the Atlantic to the Azores, a series of islands 900 miles west of Portugal, by July 2.

The pair were documenting their journey on their YouTube channel “Theros Adventures,” which they used to demonstrate how to travel the world via electric-, wind- and solar-powered vessels.

Their trip to the Azores was meant to be the first fully “green” journey on Theros, which the couple dubbed the Green Odyssey after they removed its diesel engine.

They had tried to cross the Atlantic in the boat once before in 2019, but were stopped by a forecast of storms.

On the day of their journey, Clibbery and Packwood shared a video that put them 16 nautical miles off the coast of Nova Scotia with fair winds and calm seas.

The video was their last. They were reported missing one week later.

Sable Island is about 175 miles south of Halifax.

Theros is still missing, the Times Colonist reported.

What went wrong and why the couple abandoned their beloved boat is still a mystery.

The pair got married on the yacht in 2016, one year after they met during a chance encounter at a bus stop in London, England.

Packwood was preparing to donate a kidney to her sister when she met Clibbery, who was visiting from Canada — a heartwarming story that was the center of a 2020 “How We Met” piece in The Guardian.

“We have been traveling and co-creating adventures ever since,” Packwood previously posted on YouTube.

The 40.7-metre superyacht Hygge is now undergoing sea trials following her launch from MCP Yachts ' facility in Guarujá, Brazil last month (June 2024). Hygge exceeded her contractual 20 knots for a top speed of 22.2 knots, with the owner behind the wheel.

The yacht builds on an existing partnership with Dutch studio Vripack , with the two having previously worked together on the 37.4-metre Queen Tati and the 43.8-metre Raffaella II .

Damien Chaves, director of engineering at MCP Yachts, said: " Hygge is built with a full-aluminum hull that allows for unmatched internal volume, lightness and autonomy. She is a 40-metre superyacht that offers the comfort of a 50-metre, yet with draught and lightness features that allow owners a more dynamic, versatile and sustainable range for global exploration."

Hygge is built in aluminium, with a layout focused on maximising space and privacy. All areas are accessed and serviced by crew via stairs independent of the guest staircase – a feature not typically seen in yachts of a similar size bracket.

"The owner’s lifestyle requirements were just as extensive as their accommodation needs," explained Vripack's Bart Bouwhuis. "With large social gatherings, long lingering family meals and endless days cruising the Brazilian coast on the agenda, Seaview had to deliver multi-generational needs."

Accommodation is across seven cabins, including the 360-degree master cabin which has been fitted with a private terrace and settee. Two additional VIP cabins are located on the lower deck. While interior details remain unreleased, they will incorporate oversized windows and a balance of classic and modern features courtesy of South American designer Leonardo Rotsen.

On board highlights include a lower deck beach club and spa, including a gym, sauna and swim platform. The main deck features a large lounge, paired with al fresco dining on the aft deck and a bank of semi-circular oversized sunpads. Private banquet seating can be found on the upper deck, which has been designed with gullwing lookouts for far-flung views.

The RINA-classed yacht is built with two Caterpillar C32 engines, allowing a maximum speed of 19 knots and a transoceanic range of 3,500 nautical miles when pared back to 10 knots.

“Wild Diamond,” the feature debut of Agathe Riedinger which competed at this year’s Cannes Film Festival , has been acquired by Strand Releasing for North American rights.

The critically acclaimed film tells the story of Liane, a 19-year old girl whose quick rise to fame in the world of social influencers and media explodes when she gets cast in a reality TV show entitled Miracle Island.

“Wild Diamond” expands on “Waiting for Jupiter,” Riedinger’s critically acclaimed 2018 short. “Waiting for Jupiter” follows a young woman’s pursuit of fame through reality TV. In an interview with Variety on the eve of the Cannes Film Festival, the filmmaker said she was fascinated by reality TV “because of the violence of the extremely reactionary values conveyed, the grandeur that unfolds, and the bodies of the contestants who are hyper-feminized and hyper-sexualized. The entertainment relies a lot on women’s body image.” Riedinger worked with many non-professionals on the film, including Malou Khebizi, who plays the lead part and appears in nearly every frame of the movie.

The long-gestating French film was produced by Priscilla Bertin and Judith Nora at Paris-based Silex Films.

Strand will theatrically release the film in early 2025. The company’s current slate of films also includes Fatih Akin’s “Rhinegold,” Brad Rust Gray’s “I’ll Be Your Mirror” and Ray Yeung’s “All Shall Be Well.”

MUMBAI — On two streets half a mile apart last week, life in this city was disrupted for two very different reasons.

Others called it an indictment of its lopsided development; the cost of the wedding, which was widely reported to exceed $500 million, would eclipse the yearly education budget of several small Indian states.

Here on the far side of the river, in the low-lying alleys and honking boulevards of working-class Mumbai, the most common reaction to the extravaganza was not resentment toward Ambani but frustration — about a system that catered to the whims of the exalted few yet rarely delivered for the many.

Naushad Ahmed, a burly, middle-class mechanic who owns an auto repair shop on a flood-prone stretch of LBS Road, wondered how the city could deploy resources for the Ambani wedding but fail to tackle basic infrastructure. He wanted potholes to be filled. He begged for a solution to the knee-deep floodwater that ruined businesses during every monsoon and turned alleys into canals of floating trash.

“Look, Ambani earned his money, and it’s his right to spend it on his own children,” Ahmed said, echoing a commonly heard refrain. Mumbai, after all, was a city that understood hard work and celebrated success. “But it’s no surprise that the government makes everything easy for him,” Ahmed continued. “If the government did as much for us as they did for him, then things could really be great.”

The four-month nuptials, which ended Monday, kick-started in March with a pre-wedding ceremony attended by Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Rihanna. Then came a Mediterranean yacht trip for 800 guests in May. The festivities culminated with the blowout bash at the Jio World Convention Center in Mumbai, a gleaming 18½-acre project developed by Anant Ambani’s father Mukesh, who took partial control of his father Dhirubhai’s business, Reliance Industries, in 1981 and turned it into an empire worth $250 billion today.

On Saturday night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stopped by to offer his blessings. Former British prime minister Boris Johnson was seen shuffling to bhangra music. Anant Ambani’s groomsmen, including the Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, took pictures with the $200,000 Audemars Piguet watches that they had received as gifts from the host. And a viral video captured a scantily clad Kim Kardashian milling near Mamata Banerjee, the matronly doyenne of West Bengal politics.

The influx of guests has been so great that during the pre-wedding in March, the Indian air force ordered around-the-clock operations and built new roads, taxiways and immigration counters at a dual-use airfield. This past weekend, Mumbai police closed roads near the wedding venue, and travelers complained on social media that flights out of Mumbai International Airport were delayed by a flurry of private jet traffic.

In a nod to public service, the Ambanis in recent months have thrown large feasts for 51,000 ordinary residents in Gujarat. In a Mumbai suburb, they arranged a mass wedding for 50 poor couples, who received gold jewelry. Reliance, the family conglomerate that has holdings spanning oil, telecommunications, media and retail, has framed the sprawling affair as a celebration of India’s success. “The presence of esteemed individuals highlights India’s economic, political, intellectual, and scientific prowess,” the company said in a statement to Reuters.

But to many in Mumbai and beyond, the contrasting images — of international VIPs paying respects to Ambani and of straining public infrastructure — pointed to a deeper truth about India today. It wasn’t just LBS Road in Mumbai that was flooded in recent weeks. Monsoon rains have paralyzed New Delhi, snapped 12 bridges in Bihar state and even ruptured the roof of an airport terminal in the nation’s capital , sparking angry commentary on debate shows and op-ed pages.

Jayati Ghosh, an economist at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, said the meteoric rise of Ambani and the rest of India’s 200 billionaires, who collectively hold nearly $1 trillion, according to Forbes , could unbalance India’s development at a time when other economic metrics are lagging.

Until recently, China invested nearly a quarter of its gross domestic product on infrastructure at its peak, but India has hovered around 2 percent, Ghosh said. Meanwhile, Brazil and South Africa, two other developing countries with extreme wealth disparities, invest 17 and 15 percent of their GDP, respectively, on social services compared with India’s 9 percent, according to the World Bank and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

While Modi has been widely praised for emphasizing infrastructure and social spending compared to previous administrations, he will have to make up for years of underinvestment.

The bigger issue here, Ghosh argued, was the misplaced priorities of India’s ruling class.

“The fact that you can hire Rihanna or Justin Bieber is supposed to be a sign of India’s strength, but it’s not,” she said. “Why worry about waterlogged roads when you can fly in a helicopter?”

But near the wedding venue, many residents didn’t begrudge the clan often called India’s “first family.” Sweaty welders said they sold contractors 50 tons of steel just to build the event’s awnings and made good money in the process. Outside the gleaming Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Center at Dhirubhai Ambani Square, streets smelled like citrus blossoms. A group of young students huddled under a tree, reveling in the celebrities they saw and the $38 they made working as caterers the night before.

Dev Kanojiya, a stylish 20-year-old college student, said he passed an interview to get the job after proving he was over 5-foot-4, could speak with poise and possessed a basic knowledge of Western liquor. He caught a glimpse of the Kardashian sisters and the professional wrestler John Cena, but he was delighted above all, he said, to see the cavernous event hall decorated in the theme of Varanasi, his hometown, and for the foreign guests to be exposed to classical Hindustani music and traditional Hindu marriage rituals.

Ambani “was not just doing all this spending for his son. He was presenting India in a different way to the world, showcasing India’s culture,” Kanojiya said excitedly. “We grew up hearing India is a very poor country and we can’t afford these things. But today, you see how this is done and who will come.”

Back across the river, Ahmed the mechanic and his neighbor Shareef Khan, a locksmith, stood surveying a stretch of LBS Road where shallow pools were forming again as rain began to fall. At that moment, a bus hit a pothole with such force that every head on the street corner swiveled, thinking there was an accident.

“I know why the roads here are bad,” Khan said. “Politics.”
