Blue Water Sailing

We offer exquisite cruises of Port Stephens in our luxury yacht Champagne on Ice

Steve and Shelley have been sailing together for over 37 years, having started out buying a 16-foot trailer sailer with a hole in its hull. They repaired the boat and taught themselves how to sail dodging coal ships in Gladstone Harbour (Queensland) and running into every sandbank in Port Curtis! They’ve been sailing ever since and were even engaged and married on boats.

nero profile

Nero: The 90m new build with an old-world soul and neo-classic styling

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the classically styled 90.1-metre Nero has been sailing the seas for centuries. Dig a little deeper and you'll find she is an architectural confection of old and new, as Holly Margerrison discovers.

Nero is a yacht of many secrets. For years, she was home to a plump, ginger stowaway from the Chinese shipyard she was built in. Named Nelson, the cat stayed with the owner on board, only going ashore if guests were not fond of the feline, and he even had his own chair in the wheelhouse that he scratched to pieces. Everyone gave up trying to replace the armchair and eventually threw a blanket over it.

Frederica Findlater of Burgess recounts a beautiful photo of the yacht taken from the stern. You’d be mistaken for thinking Nero was the subject of the image. Instead, sat on the capping rail, tail straight down, is Nelson, lapping up dusk’s soft light. Oh, to be the stowaway on Nero and to know the stories she holds.

Several years and two substantial refits later, these nostalgic traces can still be found throughout – if you know where to look. On a bright day off the coast of Monaco, I tour the modern-classic build, witnessing the wealth of details that make her such a revered yacht.

For example: Tucked behind the door in the owner’s suite is the epitome of British naval power. Poised high on the top shelf is a bust of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson (from which the cat borrowed its name) – a charismatic legend who led the British fleet to victory against the much larger French and Spanish fleets in the Battle of Trafalgar.

Follow the compass-embossed marquetry a little further along the deck and you uncover the next jewel in Nero 's trove. Here lies another bust, this time of Lord Byron, a figure heavily connected to the Greek War of Independence and the author behind the 1814 poem The Corsair . The poem tells the story of a wild and ruthless pirate, and served as inspiration for the name of one of the largest privately owned vessels in the 1930s, a 103-metre classic named Corsair IV that was itself the inspiration for Nero .

These treasures, along with model yachts that evoke the spirit of sea battles in their golden age, imbue Nero with a maritime history that goes much deeper than her clipper bow, black hull and iconic yellow funnel. It was British entrepreneur Neil Taylor who commissioned and designed Nero, initially setting out to restore a true classic. But when a suitable donor yacht wasn't available, he built a replica design of Corsair IV, owned by finance and industry icon JP Morgan in the 1930s.

Taylor inserted himself in the traditions of early 20th-century yachting and created something which both looked and felt like a time-honoured yacht. He pays his respects to JP Morgan across Nero with ubiquitous intertextual links. For a start, Corsair Yachts , the yard that Taylor created specifically for his build, is a nod to Morgan’s Corsair series of yachts. The bust of Nelson also honours the financier's fascination with the naval figure, who spent his life collecting ephemera and memorabilia.

John Leonida, consulting superyacht industry advisor from LP Squared Ltd, shared much of his extensive research into Nero . He said: “The level of detail is extraordinary. It’s the bringing together of so many nautical themes that makes this such a spectacular boat.” Speaking of the figurehead of Byron, he added: “It’s an easter egg. If you don’t know it’s there, you don’t know that’s Byron. It adds another dimension.”

Her exterior is equally as captivating. As Captain Paul Bell explains, her sheer line “[rises] up as if it were an old-fashioned yacht. It’s taken from the time, so it’s architecturally correct. It’s the only boat I’ve worked on that has one of those, apart from an old-fashioned sailing yacht. She feels like a mix of a motor yacht and a sailing yacht because of her full-length keel. When she’s sitting at anchor like this, she feels like a sailing yacht.” He adds: “It’s quite relaxed, it’s not like a modern-day superyacht.”

It wasn’t always so relaxed inside and, for this, interior designer Laura Pomponi is to thank. As she puts it, she “transformed the yacht from a gentleman’s club to a lady of the seas”. Pomponi was tasked with the 2016 refit in MB92 in Barcelona, under a new owner whose brief was “contemporary, classic elegance”. Pomponi explains the biggest challenge of this refit was balancing a fresh aesthetic while “keeping the soul of the vessel”. To accomplish this, she introduced considerable light, cream interiors that are anything but clinical, and an amalgamation of cosy textures throughout.

Light in colour yet springy underfoot, the handmade bouclé carpet on the main deck invites guests to take their time as they walk across it. When it came to sourcing the fabric (of which there was 3.2km in the first refit), she explains “we pick up a little bit here, a little bit there. We don’t like well-known brands, we look for something special”.

Prior to the refit, purple, black and gold tones were a common theme on board, and they have since been replaced with nautical-hued furnishings, while dark high-gloss woods have been substituted for lime-washed oak and brass fittings have been stripped and dipped in chrome to resemble silver.

The mix of old and new artwork, chosen in collaboration with the owner and sourced predominantly from Italy and America, heightens the maritime theme with a contrast between tall ships and steamships.

The result of the first refit? A tactile, retro yacht where guests are encouraged to enjoy the space. Not cavernous yet also not claustrophobic, Nero encapsulates all that is to evoke “quiet luxury” – not defined by the amount it cost to build her, nor her refit costs.

Fast forward to 2021, when Pomponi’s expertise was called on once again. This time, the brief was more technical and focused on a wellness boat that would appeal to charter clients, aligning with an upgraded programme.

With this in mind, the snug was converted into a self-serving gym on the top deck and the previous gym was converted into a beauty saloon-come-massage room. They also changed the loose furniture and the owner opted for new colours, allowing Pomponi to weave in greens and yellows amongst the teal and blue. The sofas, designed and upholstered by the studio, demand to be sat on – the level of formality stripped in favour of ergonomic design. The floor surrounding the skylounge bar was also changed to wood to be more universally appealing.

The gym was Pomponi’s challenge for the 2021 refit, not least due to the technical constraints of the camber and the sheer of the floor. To make the ultra-modern kinesis fit, her team removed the floor and replaced it with technical cork panels, which are also easier to maintain. She then harmonised the contemporary and classic ambience with glass mirrors produced by an Italian company, Sicis, that specialises in glass mosaics. The mirrored cabinets are coated to give an antique effect.

In a testament to how the boat flows, this “quiet luxury” extends to the service provided by the unobtrusive yet attentive crew. They refute the formality of a silver service associated with a yacht of this size in favour of a more personable approach.

While little is known about the name behind Nero , there are certainly some characters who tell her multifaceted story. Nelson – both the feline and the naval figure – certainly have a part to play in this. For now, Nero will play host to charter guests – next stop Tarragona, before the Antigua Yacht Show.

World news | the 6% commission on home sales is likely ending. how much could bay area buyers and sellers save, world news | dad details how he shot kate middleton video, but naysayers cry ‘body double’.

superyacht in nelson bay

A 40-year-old engineer and father of one, who had gone shopping Saturday at a local high-end farm shop near Windsor Castle, described in an interview how he captured the video that showed a “relaxed and happy” Kate Middleton leaving the shop with Prince William — a video that he and others say should put to rest the monthslong concerns about Kate’s health and whereabouts.

Of course, the internet has other ideas.

As soon as the video was published Monday by the U.K. tabloid The Sun and by the American gossip site TMZ, new rumors exploded on social media, alleging that the woman seen in the video is not Catherine, the Princess of Wales, but a body double. According to one conspiracy theory, the woman in the video could be Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley, who is at the center of yet another unsubstantiated conspiracy theory that resurfaced in the past week  — that she is William’s mistress.

Such is the state of discussion surrounding the British royal family ever since the future queen disappeared from public view after Christmas Day, with Kensington Palace saying on Jan. 17 that she underwent “planned” abdominal surgery for a mysterious medical condition. On Mother’s Day in the U.K. (March 10), Kensington Palace made things much worse by releasing a photo of Kate and her three children, George, Charlotte and Louis. Purportedly taken by William, the photo sparked global intrigue after it was slapped with a “kill” notice by major news agencies, and Kate subsequently released a statement, admitting that she had engaged in an “amateur” job of digital editing.

More questions about what’s real and what’s not continued to flourish on Monday, after Getty images issued another warning about a photo coming from Kate, The Telegraph reported . This was an image of the late Queen Elizabeth II and 10 of her grandchildren, which was taken by the Princess of Wales in April 2022 but not released by Buckingham Palace until the following year. Getty said that this image, too, had been digitally enhanced, The Telegraph reported.

Now, conspiracy theorists have jumped on the farm shop video of Kate and William to spin a tale that the British monarchy is engaging in a massive psyop operation to cover up something very sinister about the future queen. Even American reality TV host and producer Andy Cohen jumped on the bandwagon, maybe jokingly, by posting a message on X: “That ain’t Kate.”

But the man who recorded the much-discussed video, showing the princess casually dressed in a hoodie and leggings, has attested to its authenticity and to seeing her with “my own eyes” while in the farm shop. He also has offered a reasonable-sounding explanation for how he managed to be in the right place at the right time to see Kate with her husband.

Nelson Silva told The Sun he stopped in at the Royal Farms Windsor Farm Shop on Saturday, which is in the town where he lives. The shop also is a short distance from Kate and William’s home near Windsor Castle, and it sells meat, produce and other goods produced by the royal farms around Windsor Castle, as well as other farms in the area.

Silva also told The Sun in another article that he had some time to kill and went into the shop to buy some steak and produce. That’s when he spotted a familiar-looking couple in the the bread aisle. He said, “I noticed a couple choosing loaves of bread, and the woman turned her face, and I felt like I had seen the face before. … I knew it from somewhere.”

“Then I saw Kate turn her head slightly,”  Silva continued. “I was like, ‘Oh I know her.’ They went to the meat section and I was stood behind them. They were talking to staff and laughing.”

“I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but the staff seemed overwhelmed in a nice way,” Silva told The Sun. “When I went to pay for my produce, the girl at the counter was so shocked she was hardly breathing.”

“Everyone in there was very excited,” Silva said. After he paid, Silva told The Sun that he went to his car. As the royal couple exited the shop, each holding shopping bags, Silva said, “I just filmed them.”

“I think they walked out through a gate out of the grounds,” he said. “They just vanished and I didn’t see a car.”

Silva said he initially shot the video of the couple to share with his family to “show just how normal they were.”

“Kate looked happy and relaxed,” he continued. “They look happy just to be able to go to a shop and mingle. Kate looked relieved like it was a success going to a shop. It felt natural.”

While Silva didn’t think Kate and William were hiding who they were in the shop, he still got the sense that they didn’t want to linger too long, given all the “build-up” about the her whereabouts. “I got the sense they just wanted to be swift in there,” he told The Sun.

Silva, who said he usually doesn’t pay much attention to royal gossip, decried all the “trolls” who are pushing bizarre claims on social media, including the allegation that the woman is his video is a Kate body double and that he was even in cahoots in faking the couple’s appearance. “I saw her with my own eyes,” he said.

“What more do you need to lay off her?” Silva continued. “I thought after this was released they’d go quiet. But these people are so invested in the drama now.”

Arthur Edwards, a royal photographer for The Sun, spoke up for Silva’s video and said it should “put to rest” cruel rumors about the future queen. “It’s lovely to see Catherine looking so happy. People keep asking me, ‘Where’s Kate? How’s Kate?'”

But the video probably won’t put the rumors to rest right away, according to The Daily Beast . It didn’t help that The Sun initially published a story earlier Monday, citing sources who said they saw Kate at the farm shop on Saturday and attending a sporting event for her children on Sunday. But there were no accompanying photos of Kate on either outing. As the Daily Beast said, “If the most famous woman in the world, whose whereabouts has prompted the exchange of countless billions of terabytes of data in recent weeks, went to a kids’ sports match and farm shop over the weekend, wouldn’t someone have got a photo?”

Then The Sun and TMZ published the video of Kate at the farm shop. But the whirlpool of conspiracy theories was still in “full gyration” on Tuesday, The Daily Beast said. Best-selling royal author Christopher Andersen pointed out this glimpse of Kate is all too brief.

“Every time Kate pops her head above the parapet, it only serves to remind us that we still don’t know what the hell is going on,” He told The Daily Beast.

But other PR experts suggested to The Daily Beast and to this news organization that there could be a strategy to having Kate briefly seen out in public to address the Mother Day’s Photoshop controversy — specifically to show the world that she isn’t in a coma, hasn’t left William or hasn’t been “disappeared” by the royal family, as some of the conspiracy theories have alleged. The strategy doesn’t come out of some grand psyop operation but could be basic celebrity PR: Have the princess visit a place where she is likely to be seen or photographed by a member of the public.

Norah Lawlor, a New York publicist and reptation manager, told The Daily Beast that the sighting of Kate at the farm shop points to Kensington Palace employing a “gradated communication strategy” to “work up” her public visibility, as she recovers from surgery and before she officially returns to royal duties. All along, Kensington Palace has said that Kate would recover from her surgery at home and not return to public engagements until after Easter.

The Times of London reported over the weekend that “after Easter” means mid-April — after the school holidays for George, Charlotte and Louis. The children return to school on April 17. “Kate is still expected to resume public duties from then, though there are no signals yet as to when or where her first engagement will be,” The Times reported.

On Monday, there was another rumor going around on social media that Kate would make a statement to the BBC sometime on Wednesday, or even before, The Daily Beast said. However, another reputation and crisis manager, who asked not to be named, dismissed the idea of Kate doing a BBC interview, telling The Daily Beast: “Interviews with royals on the BBC have not gone well in the past.”

In its report, the Times of London cited “a royal source” who said that Kate probably would address her health and recovery at a future public engagement.  “If she was going to do it, that’s how she would do it.” A friend also said: “They will want to be clear and more open, but they’ll do it when they feel ready. I would expect that to be her instinct and it will be her call. They’re not going to be rushed.”

Attraction & Landmark - antigua

Discover Antigua's rich naval heritage

Built in English Harbour in the 1740s and still in operation today, Nelson's Dockyard is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Antigua's top tourist attraction.

Dating back to the early 18th century, Nelson's Dockyard is the oldest continually operating dockyard in the world, now carefully restored and home to historical buildings, a museum, a hotel, restaurants and boutiques.

Located in the sheltered natural bay of English Harbour, Nelson's Dockyard was one of the most important British naval bases in the Caribbean , but after the Royal Navy abandoned it in 1889, it became largely derelict. The site was renovated in the 1950s and named in honor of Horatio Nelson, who was posted here in the 1780s. It is now at the heart of Nelson's Dockyard National Park and a major visitor attraction, as well as a venue for international sailing events such as Antigua Sailing Week.

With berthing facilities on its doorstep and the full-service Antigua Yacht Club Marina in Falmouth Harbour just a short distance away, Nelson's Dockyard is an easy excursion for those visiting the island on a superyacht charter , and is sure to be a highlight of your Caribbean vacation.

Take a walk through Antigua's history

Dating back to the early 18th century, Nelson's Dockyard is the oldest continually operating dockyard in the world

A unique destination surrounded by spectacular scenery, Nelson's Dockyard is home to a fine selection of lovingly-restored historical buildings. Visitors will discover more about the site's history at the Dockyard Museum, built as the naval officers' quarters in 1855 and now displaying nautical memorabilia, model ships, figureheads and one of Nelson's telescopes.

A five-star boutique hotel, The Copper and Lumber Store Historic Inn, now occupies a former storehouse dating from the 18th century, and its dockside restaurant is an atmospheric spot for a tasty Caribbean lunch.

There are a few simple cafes and bars around the dockyard, as well as art galleries and shops while on the opposite side of the bay is Clarence House, a grand Georgian villa that was once the residence of the Governors of Antigua. It is now a museum, officially opened by Prince Harry in 2016.
