"Simply put the Avalon Yacht Club blew us away. The beauty and simplicity of the venue and view speak for themselves. They are spectacular. However, what really made the AYC so amazing was Jarrod, Brian, and the rest of staff at the Club. From the beginning of the planning process they all became like family to us. At any moment they were there to relieve all pressures that come with planning an event. Jarrod and Brian made sure that the day of our wedding went off seamlessly. The food by Chef Peter was perfect All of our family and friends have reached out to us with heaps compliments on how much they loved the wedding venue and food From the bottom of our hearts we thank you all so much for being the most gracious venue to work with. They say events take a village and the family at the Avalon Yacht Club will forever be in ours”

Behind the Scenes: Townsends Inlet Yacht Club

SEA ISLE CITY, N.J. — It is right there at the end of 87th Street. An old wooden clapboard building surrounded by a gravel parking lot for dry-docked boats and a crisscross of actual docks before the view out the windows gives way to a stunning sweep across the bay. Some say they can see the white-and-deep-blue clubhouse from their kitchen windows.

History of Townsends Inlet

History of Townsends Inlet

The history of Townsends Inlet is quite interesting. For over 2000 years the Leni-Lenape Indians lived in the area that would later become New Jersey. They came to the coast to fish and gather quahog shells from the beach. They made beads from the shells called “wampum” which was used as currency.

Development of an Island

Joseph Ludlam bought the land in 1692 from a Quaker group. He named the island after himself. He then divided it into three sections and sold the southern section to John Townsend who named it “Townsend’s Inlet” in 1695. Charles Landis purchased the rest of Ludlam Island in 1880. The north ned of Ludlam Island was called “Corson’s Inlet”. It was annexced to Upper Township and renamed “Strathmere” in 1912.

The Busch Era

Busch’s Hotel was built in 1882. Later, it became a seafood restaurant. For decades it was a popular dining establishment. The restaurant featured its specialty She Crab Soup and other seafood delicacies. Busch’s ceased operating as a full-service restaurant in 2014. It scaled down its operation to instead became a take-out location. The building was demolished later that year.

Railroad lines were constructed to bring visitors to Ludlam’s Island in 1883. One railway came in from Ocean City by way of Corson’s Inlet on the north end of the island. Another train came to the island where 41st Street is now located.

trolley

A trolley system referred to as “horse cars” began operating along Pleasure Railroad in 1887. It ran from Sea Isle to Townsends Inlet. The cars were led by horses. They transported people between the train station and the island’s hotels. This route was later extended to Corson’s Inlet. This allowed riders to go from the northern end of Ludlam Island to the south end.

A second trolley service led by mules was added along the route that is now Landis Avenue. Neither of these transport systems were traditional trolleys as we know them today. But in 1904 an electric trolley replaced the animal-operated system along Landis Avenue.

The trolley system was decommissioned in 1917. The growing popularity of motor cars led to reduced use of trolleys. Also, the trolley system required too much upkeep. Thus, the era of the trolley system ended. However, during repaving of Landis Avenue in 2010, workers unearthed part of the trolley tracks that once existed. Today, a new Jitney service operates along Landis Avenue. This provides riders with a safe way to visit bars and restaurants in Sea Isle, Townsends Inlet and Strathmere.

Building Development

U.S. Life Saving Station was erected in Townsends Inlet in 1849.

A Civic Center was built circa 1888. It was home to many dances, pageants, concerts and community events for over a century. The Civic Center would be transformed into Santa’s Workshop each December. It featured beautifully decorated window displays for the community to enjoy each night. The building also was host to an annual Holiday Show. The King Neptune Festival was held here in summer. The Civic Center faced possible foreclosure due to nonpayment of taxes in 2017. This issue has not yet been resolved to date.

The bridge connecting Townsends Inlet with Avalon was constructed in the 1940s. The bridge has a history of closures due to damage and structural concerns. Hurricane Sandy caused damage to the road from the bridge on the Avalon side. Therefore, it was shut down for months while the road was rebuilt. Another repair project occurred in 2015, during which time it was closed for months. Cracks and severe deterioration were found in the support piles during a 2017 underwater inspection. Some repairs were made to allow motorists, pedestrians and bike riders use the bridge in the summer of 2017. However, it is believed that the bridge needs to be rebuilt but it will cost in the hundreds of millions of dollars to do so.

Two additional mixed-use buildings were completed in 2018. The Cove and offer additional retail, dining and condominiums. The completion of this project promises to make Townsends Inlet a sought-after destination for dining and shopping unlike it has been in the past.

Charter Boat Hit Bridge Before Taking on Water, Authorities Say

townsends inlet yacht club

By DONALD WITTKOWSKI and MADDY VITALE

Authorities confirmed Tuesday that a charter boat carrying 22 passengers struck the Townsends Inlet Bridge linking Sea Isle City and Avalon before taking on water and running aground.

All of the passengers were safely evacuated from the Starfish charter vessel and no injuries were reported in the accident at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

“We got a report that a commercial charter vessel, the Starfish, hit the (Townsends Inlet Bridge),” said Lt. Matthew Childs, public affairs officer for the U.S. Coast Guard. “The vessel struck the bridge and the captain of the vessel grounded the vessel to ensure the safety of the occupants.”

townsends inlet yacht club

The Townsends Inlet Bridge, originally built in 1939 during the Great Depression as one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal infrastructure projects, provides a direct link between Sea Isle and Avalon. It is one of five toll bridges operated by the Cape May County Bridge Commission that connect the beach communities along the scenic Ocean Drive from Ocean City to Cape May.

Preliminary indications are that the bridge did not suffer significant damage, Sea Isle Mayor Leonard Desiderio said.

The accident remains under investigation by the Coast Guard to determine what led to the boat hitting the bridge and taking on water, authorities said.

“Preliminarily, it appears that strong currents may have contributed to the accident,” Desiderio said in a statement. “When it occurred, the pilot put out a distress call, which was responded to by several boats in the area, which assisted in helping get over 20 passengers off the boat.”

Childs credited one boater in particular for guiding all 22 passengers safely off the charter vessel after responding to the accident.

The Coast Guard does not know who that person is, but Childs wanted to give thanks to the boater for helping with the rescue.

“We want to give kudos to the good Samaritan who essentially rescued these people who were on board in distress. To save all these people, the mariner deserves our best,” Childs said.

townsends inlet yacht club

Meanwhile, the Starfish remained grounded Tuesday in shallow water in a channel several hundred yards from the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City off Venicean Road. The bow appeared to have sustained significant damage.

A marine towing company that responded to the accident has placed a patch on a hole in the Starfish while efforts are being made to refloat the charter boat, Childs said.

Starfish Boats, a company that is docked at the marina in Sea Isle at 42nd Place, specializes in fishing charters and cruises. The company issued a statement about the accident on its Facebook page, saying that it intends to return the Starfish to service.

“Thank you for the kind messages, calls and comments we have received so far regarding the incident (Monday) afternoon. We are hopeful. However the boat does have damage and will be inoperable for some time. All passengers, mate and captain are okay.”

The company further said that it will reach out to passengers who had upcoming scheduled trips.

“We will be back!” the statement said.

Passengers Rescued From Sinking Charter Boat in Sea Isle

townsends inlet yacht club

By MADDY VITALE

The charter boat Starfish took on water Monday afternoon in Sea Isle City near the Townsends Inlet Yacht Club and had to be towed to safety.

Capt. Anthony Garreffi, officer in charge of the Sea Isle Police Department, said the department received a 911 call about the boat.

“We turned it over to the Coast Guard. It is their investigation,” Garreffi said, adding that the charter boat was in the waters behind the yacht club.

The marine towing company Sea Tow arrived on the scene and brought the boat and passengers ashore. There were 22 passengers aboard, according to a report by NJ.com.
