St. Pete Beach is the perfect place to rent a boat in Florida. There's a fair bit to see when you’re walking around St. Petersburg, but the real action is on the water. Enjoy the Beach Life The beaches in St. Pete are truly world-class. Things to Do in St. Petersburg by Boat

Visit Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge

Just beyond the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and outside of Tampa Bay, the former military base has become a 280-acre state park and wildlife refuge and is home to a wide variety of birds, tortoises, sea turtles, and much more. 

Only accessible by ferry or private boat, the island also has a rich history with ruins left from Fort Dade and a 150-year-old lighthouse. Although boats are not allowed to beach, visitors can anchor and walk ashore to enjoy the pristine beaches, hiking trails, and unspoiled natural beauty.

It's important to remember that pets are not allowed on the island due to the bird sanctuaries and other protected species, and there are no facilities available so it is important to bring plenty of fresh water and sunscreen.

Visit Bean Point Beach

Boaters leaving Tampa Bay to cruise out the Gulf of Mexico pass Anna Maria Island to the south. At the northern tip of the barrier island sits Bean Point Beach, one of the area's most beautiful beaches and the perfect place for an afternoon getaway or a day in the sun.

Although it is not remote or uninhabited, the white sands and turquoise waters make Bean Point Beach a popular attraction. Boaters can anchor up and wade ashore, where it is possible to watch manatees swim past while lounging in the sand, with access to nearby restaurants and other facilities within fairly easy reach. 

No matter what you plan to do once you get there, remember to take plenty of fresh water and sunscreen along to help make your day in the sun a good one.

Fish in the Gulf or Tampa Bay

With quick, easy access to either Tampa Bay or the Gulf of Mexico, St. Petersburg offers anglers a variety of inshore and offshore fishing opportunities. Well-known for the size and number of tarpon in the area, Tampa Bay offers great fishing when it might be too rough to run out to the deeper water in search of big fish. The Bay is also a great place to fish for redfish, snook, and many other species.

Offshore in the Gulf's deep waters, mackerel, shark, amberjack, mahi-mahi, tuna, and sailfish are common catches, although there are lots of grouper and snapper waiting on the bottom as well. Whether hunting out in the deep or keeping close to home, St. Petersburg offers some of the best fishing on Florida's West Coast.

Cruise Tampa Bay

At 400 square miles, Tampa Bay offers boaters plenty of places to go for a great day on the water. Whether fishing, heading to a favorite beach, or just going for a lazy cruise in the sun, there is plenty of open water and great places to anchor up.

Tampa Bay has popular parks and destinations like Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge and Shell Key Preserve. Other popular destinations for boaters interested in socializing are some of Tampa Bay's many sandbars, such as Pine Island, John's Pass, Fort De Soto, and others.

Tampa Bay has endless opportunities for cruising, fishing, sightseeing, and more. Just remember to bring plenty of fresh water and sunscreen to make it a perfect day on the water.

ProTips: Be sure to pay attention to channel markers and buoys, and be extra cautious when visiting a popular sandbar where swimmers may be in the water.

Explore Sarasota Bay

Just south of the mouth of Tampa Bay, Sarasota Bay offers boaters with smaller vessels another place to explore. Although it is shallower than Tampa Bay, Sarasota Bay has well-marked channels and plenty of opportunities to fish, stop at a waterfront eatery, or gather with other like-minded boaters at a popular area sandbar. 

Fish in some hotspots around the bay, or snorkel in the shallows to enjoy the creatures hiding in the seagrass. Cruise slowly past luxury homes or take in the area's incredible natural beauty, including a wide variety of waterbirds. Manatees are also common in the area, so it's important to keep watch for these slow-moving creatures. 

Sarasota Bay is also known for its seagrass, so paying close attention to the marked channels is important to avoid fouling a propeller or damaging the ecosystem.

Tips: Long Beach has something for everyone. Cruise the harbor for a great view, haul or dock your boat and get out your walking shoes to take advantage of all Long Beach has to offer.

Cruise the Gulf of Mexico

Leave Tampa Bay, turn north, and cruise Florida's west coast toward Clearwater and beyond. Or, turn south, and head down to Sarasota, Siesta Key, and Venice. Although many of the coastal areas have been developed, there are parks, preserves and sections of beachfront where Florida's natural beauty is on display. 

 If the weather is good and going deeper is the plan, head straight out of Tampa Bay into the Gulf of Mexico in search of big fish, or stay closer to shore and enjoy the sunshine and privacy of the open water. 

Depending on the waves and wind, being out on the Gulf can make wakeboarding, water skiing, or any other activity fun. However, drifting along the coast for an afternoon can be a great way to relax in the sun.

It is especially important to carry plenty of fresh water, snacks, and sunscreen when running any distance from shore in case of a breakdown.

Tips: The weather can change quickly, and boats can break down. Ensure the vessel has been well maintained, all safety equipment is in good condition, flares are not expired, and communication equipment like VHF radios are tested often. Going for a ride is great, but getting home safely is still the highest priority.

As we depart the marina, It’s a short motor out of Bayboro Harbor and into Tampa Bay. We will hoist the sails and set off toward the famous Sunshine Skyway Bridge. It’s about a 2-hour sail until we pass under the monstrous 430-foot high bridge, continuing on for another hour before we reach Egmont Key. At any time, a dolphin, manatee, turtle, ray, or shark can make an appearance.

Upon arrival, your captain will drop anchor and prepare the dinghy for the short shuttle ride to the beach. Once on shore, you’ll find this enchanted island paradise is packed with surprises. Tortoises, Ruins, a Lighthouse, and the most beautiful beach you’ll ever see! This excursion will make you feel like you’re sailing to a remote Bahamas island.

After 2 hours of exploring, the captain will pick you up and bring you back to the yacht. We will then begin to make our way back, once again sailing under the Sunshine Skyway bridge.

If you have chosen to return in the evening, you will be greeted with the most amazing view of the setting sun as we approach St. Petersburg. Your captain will set the boat up for the perfect sunset photo before it disappears over the horizon. We will then drop the sails and motor back into the marina, just in time for you and your party to grab a late dinner in one of the many downtown St. Petersburg restaurants.

This is a full day of Sailing and Exploring. The natural beauty of Florida will be on full display and it will surely be a day your family will never forget.

Captain Stefan Yacht Charters  AND ASA SAILING School

Captain Stefan Gashus is an experienced USCG Charter Captain and ASA  Sailing Instructor located in beautiful St. Petersburg, Florida .  

Captain Stefan can help you arrange an unforgettable private yacht charter for you and your guests.  Your cruise can be as long as you like: a full day, multiple days with overnights, or perhaps a half day or sun set cruise on Tampa Bay.  

You can choose to simply relax and let Stefan safely captain your yacht charter or if you are interested in personal instruction, Captain Stefan can provide training on his or another suitable vessel.  Training can be casual or lead to certification with the American Sailing Association (ASA ) or the Recreational Power Boat Association (RPBA) . 

Yacht Sailing in Florida is safe and affordable with Captain Stefan. Your yacht charter is tailored to your desires.  

Captain Stefan moved to Florida in 2014 however his sailing career began in his youth in Nova Scotia, racing sailing dinghies and keel boats until the North West Arm would freeze up.  Later Stefan sailed out of the Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club in Victoria, British Columbia and participated in sailing races throughout the Pacific Northwest.  Today Stefan offers charters out of St. Petersburg Florida to destinations in and around South Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

In addition to holding a  U.S. Coast Guard Master Captain’s License, Stefan teaches various sailing and power boating courses through approved American Sailing Association (ASA) and Recreational Power Boating Association (RPBA) schools.

Captain Stefan also provides captain services for yacht deliveries or to enable yacht charters for vessels up to 100 tons. (catamaran or monohull). 

Captain Stefan's Beneteau 373 is from the drawing board of the design firm Berret/Racoupeau.  Fast, roomy and comfortable, the 373 is a fantastic all around cruising vessel. Her two state room interior arrangement features a spacious galley and salon with a large head and separate shower. Numerous fixed windows, ports and hatches create a very bright feel to the below decks space.

On deck, her roomy cockpit features a pivoting steering pedestal that allows the wheel to be rotated out of the way for easy access to her walk through transom and large swim platform. Her in mast furling main sail and furling head sail are easily deployed and furled from the comfort of the cockpit. For sailors interested in advanced sailing, a downwind asymmetric spinnaker and whisker pole can be hoisted.  She is equipped with air conditioning and a diesel furnace.  All required safety equipment and life vests are on board, along with a certified life raft.  A full galley includes a fridge, separate freezer, oven, stove, microwave and double sink.  For longer cruises she is equipped with a water maker, generator, and a Victron 3K inverter and charger.  Raymarine  sailing instruments include chart plotters at the helm and navigation station, radar, AIS and autopilot.  L’Ardeur is ready to provide enjoyment and performance!

Where is the boat located.

Your rented vessel will be in the water upon your arrival to the boarding location. All rentals are to be boarded at the Jungle Prada Boat Ramp. Address: 8324 Elbow Ln N Saint Petersburg, FL 33710 United States. The boats can be trailered to your nearest ramp depending on availability and mileage.

How old do you need to be to rent?

Renter must be of 23 years or older.

Who pays for fuel charges?

A full tank of fuel is included with your rental price!

Where can I take the boat on the water?

Depending on weather conditions, renters will be advised on where they can safely operate the boat on their rental day (inter coastal/nearshore/both)

Can I fish off the boat?

While most boats are not built for fishing and therefore do not have a live well or rod holders, you may bring your fishing tackle onboard in attempts to get a big catch!

How far in advance can I reserve a boat?

We can take reservations with a day in advance, a month in advance or longer!

What if I want to cancel my rental?

As long as you cancel prior to 48 hours of your rental time, you can avoid a $100 cancellation fee! Unfortunately renters that do not show up with no prior notice will be charged the full amount of the rental.

What happens if there happens to be bad weather on the day of my rental?

Weather is unpredictable, therefore we do not penalize you for canceling a rental due to Small Craft advisories, marine hazard statements or limited visibility.

What happens if bad weather comes while I am on the water?

If you see conditions becoming more hazardous while you are on your rental we advise to head back to the ramp early to avoid endangering yourself and anyone else on board. Unused time will be refunded in the case of bad weather while renting. (Special conditions apply for multi day rentals)

What happens if the boat breaks down?

If any issues arise with the normal function of the boat while you are renting please call us as soon as possible so that we can guide you through fixing the issue or get you home safely and timely.

Can I preform water sports towing behind the boat?

The boats may not be used for any towing activities.

What do I need to rent?

1. NASBLA accredited boating license or temporary boating license If you do not have a boating license you can apply to get a temporary license here( Temporary License Site ) 2. Pay reservation fee, security deposit, and rental fee

What if we are late to the dock at the end of the rental?

If you arrive more than 30 minutes late to the dock without prior notice or without valid reason there will be a $50 late fee taken out of security deposit.

Can I rent for multiple days if I have a place to keep it on the water?

Depending on availability and advanced notice, YES! For multi day rentals please contact us so we can go over full details.

How many people can we have onboard.

The amount of passengers varies depending on which boat you rent and the number of coolers and equipment you bring with you. We recommend up to 8 people on the Mia, 10 on the Emma & 12 on the Ashley. This includes enough room for a few coolers & small personal bags/items. 

Are kids and pets allowed?

Yes, kids are welcome under the supervision of a parent/guardian! Sorry, pets are not allowed on the boat.

Do I need a boating license to drive the boat myself?

If you were born after January 1st, 1988 you will need a temporary license that you can get here . If you were born before, you will just need a driver's license. 

Do we need to bring our own lifejackets?

Nope! All our boats come equipped with enough Coast Guard-approved adult & child life jackets. When booking, please inform us of how many child lifejackets you will need. 

Do the boats have speakers?

All boats come with Bluetooth-enabled speakers or feel free to bring your own aux cord to hook up your phone.

Where do we pick up the boat?

We can meet you at any public dock within 20 miles of St Pete Beach. If you are renting a home on the water, we can deliver the boat to your dock/lift with any multi-day rental.

Is there a cancellation policy?

Yes, 24-hour notice is required for all cancellations to avoid a $100 cancellation fee. No-Call/No-Shows will be charged the full rate of their reservation.
