Boat Mooring On The Norfolk Broads

March 26, 2023

A boat mooring up on the Norfolk broads

Norfolk Broads Boat Mooring: Escape Into The Wild

The Norfolk Broads possess an enchanting allure, comprising an elaborate system of rivers and lakes which provide breathtaking vistas of the rural landscape. It constitutes an ideal location for those seeking to venture out into the waterways of the United Kingdom. One can discover numerous boat mooring sites situated throughout the heart of the Norfolk Broads, offering an array of choices catering to individual preferences.

What we’re looking to cover is the information needed to make the most of your time on the water, whether you’re coming from Potter Heigham, Yarmouth, Norwich, Hickling or hiring a boat for the first time we hope to provide some information and tips on your next trip.

Boat Moorings in Norfolk Broads

Some of the popular locations for mooring your boat on the Norfolk Broads include River Bure, River Thurne and River Ant. Each of these places provides excellent access to the waterways, with several 24 hour moorings available. Customers of Norfolk Broads moorings can take advantage of a variety of amenities and services. Many of the moorings provide convenient access to nearby villages, pubs, and shops, making it easy to explore the local area. In addition to this, there are several boatyards and marinas available for parking and rental.

This is a list of Free 24-hour moorings and no charge unless otherwise specified:

*The moorings at Barnes Brinkcraft are not permanent, so in case you want to dock your boat here, kindly approach the reception to get a designated mooring.

Alternative Locations

Here are some more moorings provided by the Broads Authority that have alternative uses, including demasting areas for sailing boats and spots to wait for the tide to enable bridge passages

Beccles South Bank   –  Bridge Wait/Demasting Haddiscoe (East/West)   –  Demasting mooring Potter Heigham Bridge Green   –  Short Stay Moorings Potter Heigham (nr Herbet Woods)  –  Demasting mooring Potter Heigham Dinghy Park   –  Demasting mooring Reedham Pontoon   –  Bridge Wait/Demasting Runham Pontoon   –  Demasting mooring Scare Gap/Acle   –  Emergency mooring Somerleyton Pontoon   –  Bridge Wait/Demasting

Double Moorings

As a result of the limited availability of mooring spaces, The Broads Authority assigned 20 moorings specifically for double alongside mooring. Every designated location has a sign that authorizes double mooring.

In consultation with the hire boat federation, the Authority have the following  Advice for hirers- Double Mooring  (pdf document) [95kb]

Some things to keep in mind

  • Enhance your boating expertise by referring to The Broads Authority Boating essentials webpage and viewing our animated videos.
  • Prior approval must be obtained before tying up to the initial vessel to avoid double mooring.
  • For those with private boats, it is advisable to have mooring lines running directly from the vessel to the shore, as hire vessels may not have an equal quantity or length of lines.
  • Make an effort to position the boat that’s departing first on the outer side. However, if you’re on the inner boat and want to advance, request the occupants of the outer boat to move. It’s important to confirm that the outer vessel has been securely anchored or docked. If the individuals on the neighbouring boat can’t help, attach a rope to their boat and take into account the water’s current or tide prior to performing the manoeuvre.
  • Assuming responsibility for any harm, crossing the initial vessel to the shore is entirely up to you.

Private Moorings

If you are looking for a more secluded and tranquil mooring, private moorings in the heart of the Norfolk Broads are available. These private moorings offer more peace and quiet than public moorings and are ideal for those who want to enjoy the beautiful scenery without being disturbed. In case you seek a serene and isolated docking spot, private moorings located in the midst of Norfolk Broads are at your disposal. These exclusive moorings provide a greater degree of calmness and seclusion in comparison to public ones, making them an ideal fit for anyone looking to relish the breathtaking scenery while avoiding disturbances.

What is the cost of a Private Mooring?

Most of the private moorings are in and around the £55 per square foot per annum. They vary a little from place to place, but all offer easy access, all within the distance of local amenities. If you’re looking to just rent on the Norfolk broads, then any of the above places mention you can moor for free

Norfolk Broads Moorings for Rent

If you are looking to rent a mooring on the Norfolk Broads, there are plenty of options available. The Broads Authority Moorings offer a range of moorings for rent, with fees varying depending on the location and facilities available. Some of the locations offer additional services such as electricity and waterway access, while others offer basic mooring facilities.

Availability

There could be instances where certain locations are already occupied or mandate advance reservations. A handful of websites provide mooring availability checkers, thereby enabling you to organize your excursion and evade any letdown. You’ll often find peak summer times exceptionally busy, more so on weekends and bank holidays. If you want to still enjoy your trip, I suggest avoiding areas like Wroxham Bridge, Hickling Broads and the village of horning.

Moor Stern, Mud Weight, or Quay Heading

The majority of Norfolk Broads moorings utilize stern mooring, in which the boat is secured from the rear. Nonetheless, certain places may necessitate the utilization of mud weights or quay heading to fasten the boat. It is crucial to inquire about the kind of mooring obtainable waterside at each site prior to arrival.

Toilet Facilities and Other Amenities

The majority of the moorings situated on the Norfolk Broads are equipped with conveniences such as toilets, as well as additional facilities like showers, laundry facilities, and boatyard services. Nevertheless, it is crucial to verify the availability of these amenities in advance in order to prevent any dissatisfaction.

Emergency Moorings

if there is an emergency on the Norfolk Broads, there are numerous designated mooring sites that can be utilized. These docking areas are secure and allow access to important services as needed. If you’re about to hire a day boat on the Norfolk Broads it’s normally mentioned in your brief before you set off. It’s worth it to enquire at the time of booking.

Can you live on a boat on a mooring?

Do you need a licence for a boat on the Broads?

Sailing through the Norfolk Broads is a fantastic way to take in the natural beauty and serene surroundings of this distinctive area. Planning your trip is simple with the various mooring options available, enabling you to fully appreciate all the attractions the Norfolk Broads have to offer.

Beccles is a charming market town on the banks of the River Waveney which is well worth a visit. Once a Saxon fishing port on the edge of a huge estuary, it today boasts picture postcard riverside houses and winding historic streets filled with shops and cafes.

St Michael’s Church, where Nelson’s parents married, dominates the town and a climb up its fabulous bell tower will reward you with breathtaking views across the Waveney Valley. Beccles Museum is a good place to learn about the town and Beccles Lido open air swimming pool is ideal for family fun. There are also some lovely riverside walks to enjoy.

The best way to visit the town is to moor in Beccles Quay. This large grassed area has children’s play equipment and a little cafe serving ice creams.

Take a short walk into the town centre to visit the magnificent St Micheal’s Church, which dates back to 1369. Naval hero Horatio Nelson’s parents, Catherine Suckling and Edmund Nelson, married in the church in 1749 and Elizabethan composer William Cobbold is also buried there.

Best of all is the church’s separate Bell Tower which ascends nearly 100ft to the heavens. Book a tour to climb the 122 steps to the tower’s rooftop and enjoy stunning views up to 20 miles away on a clear day. Easter to September, 01502 710711.

Beccles Museum is also worth a visit in the Grade 1 listed Leman House on Ballygate. Entry is free and the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday afternoons from Good Friday until the end of October.

For a great family day out, head to Beccles Lido open air swimming pool which overlooks the River Waveney. It has a springboard, slide, inflatable aqua run, all weather awning and plenty of room to relax on sunloungers. Open late May to early September. 01502 713297.

Beccles is a great walking area and a popular choice for history and wildlife is the Beccles Marsh Trail. Three trails explore Beccles Marsh, which supports rare plants and wildlife in a network of dykes. It was bequeathed to Queen Elizabeth 1 to recognise Beccles’ importance to the wool trade.

For shopping, Beccles’ town centre has a good choice of quirky independent stores, gift shops and high street chains as well as plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants. Morrisons and Tesco supermarkets are located on George Westwood Way.

Top Tip:  You need to pass under Beccles Old Bridge to reach Geldeston Locks. If your cruiser has insufficient clearance, you can take the Big Dog Ferry from Beccles Lido to Geldeston Locks.

Visit Geldeston Lock

Cruise from Beccles to the limit of navigation at Geldeston Lock. The river here is one of the most unspoilt sections of the Broads and has crystal clear water that’s rich with plant and animal life. There are plenty of free Broads Authortity 24 hours moorings at the locks and one of the most atmospheric pubs on the Broads – The Locks Inn. Originally built as a mill keeper’s cottage in 1560, The Locks Inn has been pulling pints ever since the 17th century. While it serves gastro pub food today it still retains much of its old fashioned character. In fact, many locals can remember a time before the pub had electricity and proper road access! 01508 518414.

Geldeston – Side on mooring for six boats

Beccles Yacht Station (Beccles Quay) – Privately managed yacht station, where a mooring fee applies. Advanced booking recommended in school holidays by calling the Harbour Master. Electric hook up, toilets, showers and laundry facilities available. 01502 712225.

Eating Out:

Beccles Quay Cafe – Casual place for sandwiches, cakes and ice cream by the water with outside seating.

Twyford’s Cafe – Highly rated for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Located in a historic building with a secret garden on Exchange Square. 01502 710614.

Mooring

Well you have got your boat, fully stocked for your cruise, the itinerary is set but where to stop for the night? No worries as there are plenty of moorings available for the intrepid explorers of the Norfolk Broads rivers and waterways. There are quite a number of free 24 hour Broads Authority moorings throughout the Broads, we have listed them below and there are plenty of privately owned moorings and broads where if you tie up to the bank or drop a mud weight, you can expect to pay a fee. Some of the moorings are in the middle of a waterside village or close to one, some of the riverside pubs offer free mooring if you spend time enjoying a drink or a meal in their establishments and there are also yacht stations and marinas. Or you can go it alone and just stop, tie up to the riverbank amongst the marshes and reed beds, then sit back to enjoy the sights and sounds of the countryside

We are planning on visiting Beccles Lido on Monday 17th August and intend mooring at the Yacht Station. How busy is it likely to be? I don't really want to reserve a mooring because if the weather is rubbish the plan will change.

We cannot get under the bridge, is the Yacht Station our only option or are there others moorings elsewhere?

There are limited BA free moorings before the new road bridge.

Matt

I reckon you will be fine to get moored there

SueH

We have always phoned and booked.  Mind you we are greedy wanting to be on the main river next to the power!

Never a problem though.

JanetAnne

I believe you will be fine on the 17th. I know the nights of the 14th and 15th are fully booked as its carnival weekend and there are a couple of boating events booked in as well but they will be well on their way by the Monday.

Keith I may wrong and if so apologise, but are those moorings not reserved for vessels unable to get under the bridge?

ranworthbreeze

I have only been able to moor at the 24 hour mooring on one occasion, it has been full, taped off for repairs etc. The rise and fall can be an issue especially for lower craft.

There is a reserved area for craft that can not get under the bridge but again they can struggle to get a mooring.

Another issue is the noise from the road bridge.

I would reserve a mooring in the Yacht Station and phone them if your plans do change.

SwanR

We always enjoy mooring at the yacht station and going for a wander around Beccles. Going in June we haven't needed to book but if I was wanting to go in August I would be tempted to book- it could be quite a long journey to get back up the Waveney to anywhere else were the yacht station to be full. Either that or be prepared to moor up quite early to be on the safe side.

good point that Jean. It's a couple of hours back to WRC if it's full. Think I'll book a spot.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

They are! (I can't find a pic I took a couple of years back of the notice board).

The Ranger was issuing tickets to peeps moored there last year who could get under the bridge.

Broads01

If you're able to pass through Beccles bridge there are limited moorings next to the swimming pool and its a nice spot.

JennyMorgan

The BA have tried it on, there is no legislation to uphold the mooring restrictions at that point. Noisy though, but mooring there saves you a tenner.

Viking23

good point that Jean. It's a couple of hours back to WRC if it's full...

Here lies the problem on the Southern Broads, if you are looking for mooring an hour before dusk, you might not have time to find another mooring if your chosen spot is full.

Luckily in the Autumn, when it gets dark early, there are generally less boats on the river, so better chance of finding somewhere, but not guaranteed of course.

The Southern Rivers, in my opinion, are blessed with many miles of 'wilderness' moorings along many stretches of river bank. Okay, so Beccles, when full, can be a problem but if you moor to the South shore anywhere between Burgh St Peters and Beccles there is a good footpath to Beccles. You may not be able to moor where you want to but there is no shortage of moorings, so long as you have a pair of rond anchors and a mudweight!

Planning to arrive at lunchtime so if the worst comes to the worst we'll have lots of time on our hands. And with WRC and Oulton Broad as backups i can't really lose!

Whats the air draft on your boat Jim

SPEEDTRIPLE

Unless you`re looking for moorings with services, ie, water and leccy hook up, there are i think 3 staithes between Beccles and WRC, all being BA 24 hour moorings. One is at Worlingham (i think that`s what it`s called?) on the North bank, and North Cove on the south bank. There is another not far from North Cove, but not sure what it`s called.

Air draft is 8ft 4 which is a shame as it's years since I've been to Geldeston.

We moored at North Cove in June and it was my favourite mooring of the week. Really lovely spot. But you only get two or three boats at each of those moorings so when it's busier in July and August I don't know whether they tend to be free or are a bit like Instead on the north - lucky to ever find the mooring free.

I think there's also another mooring just outside Beccles which is private land but there's an honesty box for leaving a donation for staying overnight.

There was one boat at Aldeby yesterday late morning and nothing at the other two..........

Many more are available at places such as staithes, public houses and boatyards although these may charge a fee (moorings marked DP16 have been provided as part of a planning condition and charges may apply). Our moorings at Ranworth , Great Yarmouth Yacht Station and Norwich Yacht Station also charge.

Broads Authority 24 hour moorings

Below is a list of moorings where vessels can moor for up to 24 hours for free (unless otherwise specified). Moorings marked DP16 have been provided as part of a planning condition and charges may apply.

We are currently working on delivering an interactive web map which shows the location of our moorings.

Whilst we're developing this you can download a map of Broads Authority 24 hour moorings (PDF) or find it on p.28 of our visitor magazine Broadcaster .

* Moorings at Barnes Brinkcraft are not fixed, if you wish to moor here please speak to reception to be assigned a mooring.

Other moorings

Below are other Broads Authority moorings that serve additional purposes, such as for sailing boat demasting and waiting for the tide to allow bridge crossings.

Double Mooring

Due to pressure on mooring spaces, we have designated 20 moorings for double alongside mooring. Each site has a sign stating that double mooring is permitted.

In consultation with the hire boat federation we have compiled the following  Advice for hirers- Double Mooring (pdf document) [95kb]

Things to remember

  • You can brush up on your boating skills by visiting our Boating essentials web page and watching our animated videos.
  • Don't double moor without permission to tie up to the first boat.
  • A private boat mooring would be advised to have the bow and stern lines direct from the vessel to the shore - hire vessels do not have the same number or length of lines.
  • Always try and arrange for the boat leaving first to be on the outside but, if you are the inside boat and wish to move on, ask the crew on the outside boat to move. Remember to ensure the outside vessel is re-secured safely.  If the crew on the adjoining boat are unable to assist, keep a line ashore from their vessel and consider the tide or river flow before you plan the manoeuvre.
  • Crossing the first vessel to the bank is at your own risk and you may be held responsible for any damage.

Galleon Storage & Mooring Ltd Logo

Galleon Storage & Mooring Ltd

Established in 2007, by the late William Bent, we are a boat storage and mooring company located beside the River Waveney at Beccles, Suffolk.

Since that time a solid reputation has been built for the storage of boats on land throughout the year from small fishing boats to larger 9 mtr boats. We also accommodate the summer season boating enthusiasts and provide winter boat storage between November and March. The dry stack system we use, was adopted because of the limited bankside river moorings in the area and this has therefore, enabled more people to bring their own boats to the Broads and our customers are not only local but several live around the UK. We also have a limited number of moorings for year round use.

In addition, we offer storage for canoes, kayaks and trailers. We have a slipway available for boats, canoes, kayaks and paddle boards and offer boat lifts, pressure washing, anti-fouling and pump outs. We welcome commercial transport companies to lift craft on and off lorries.

By river, we can be located just up river from the old bridge near Beccles Quay.

From the boatyard the river meanders through Barsham Marshes to Geldeston, the furthest point navigable by boat, with the Locks Inn with its overnight moorings and where live music can be enjoyed on a Sunday afternoon and midweek. Heading from the boatyard in the opposite direction can be seen the red-bricked malt houses of the area and the colourful gardens that sweep down to the waters edge. Beyond the Beccles Old Road Bridge (where headroom is 6ft 6” at average high water) can be seen Beccles quay. The river then can be enjoyed further to Aldeby, Oulton Broad, Somerleyton, St Olaves and Burgh Castle and along this stretch are several moorings for your day trips.

By road we are positioned in Puddingmoor, Beccles and are next door to Beccles’ Lido, an outdoor heated swimming pool.

The centre of the market town is accessible on foot by Stepping Hill to Ballygate, immediately opposite. Here you will find many independent shops, restaurants and cafes and every Friday is Beccles market day. Beccles also has its own train station for visits to or from Lowestoft.
