While the high-speed ferry skims the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, you relax and enjoy the sunshine and scenery. This gives new meaning to the old saying, "getting there is half the fun!"

About the Key West Express

Getting to Key West used to be limited to either driving down the traffic-prone Overseas Highway or flying into Key West International Airport, which is not usually practical for those on a budget. Although the drive from Miami can usually be done in less than four hours, those traveling from Southwest Florida may find that the trip takes them all day.

But taking the Key West Express is as easy as parking your car and boarding the large catamaran. You may choose from traveling in air-conditioned comfort inside or soak up the sunshine on the outside deck. A completely stocked galley and bar are available as are large flat-screened TVs with satellite television.

The Key West Express isn't just a day trip. When making your reservations, you can plan to stay over in Key West and come back a different day—simply reserve your return date. When boarding, each passenger is allowed two small carry-on bags or pay an additional fee per piece for larger luggage. Coolers, alcohol, and glass items are not allowed on board the boat.

Booking Your Trip

Key West Express recommends booking your trip at least eight days in advance. This is not only to ensure you actually get a ticket, but also to make sure there is a boat from your desired location on the date you want. The Key West Express departs from Fort Myers Beach all year round and Marco Island, seasonally.

Be sure to bring your confirmation code and photo ID to the ticket window on the day of your departure.

Terminal Locations and Parking Information

The Key West Express departs daily from Fort Myers Beach (except when the calendar indicates no sailing) at 8:30 a.m. with ticketing and boarding beginning at 7 a.m. The terminal is located at 1200 Main St, Fort Myers Beach, FL 33931. The return trip from Key West to Fort Myers Beach departs daily at 6 p.m. with boarding beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Uncovered, paid parking is available at the Fort Myers Beach location. Travel time to Key West is about 3.5 hours.

The Key West Express departs from Marco Island seasonally from December through April (except as noted on calendar) at 8:00 a.m. with ticketing and boarding beginning at 7 a.m. During the summer the Ferry leaves from Marco Island on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the same times. The terminal is located at 951 Bald Eagle Drive, Marco Island, FL 34145.

The return trip from Key West to Marco Island departs daily at 5 p.m. with boarding beginning at 4 p.m. Uncovered parking is available at the Marco Island location free of charge. Travel time to Key West is about 3 hours.

The Key West terminal is located at 100 Grinnell Street, Key West, FL 33040. The company reserves the right to deny boarding to passengers who aren't aboard at least 30 minutes before departure, so be on time!

What to Expect on Board

The Key West Express strives to create a comfortable environment for all its passengers and offers air-conditioned interiors, sun deck loungers, flat screen TVs, and a full-service bar with burgers and sandwiches, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The company prides themselves on their airline-style reclining seats as well, so expect comfort.

Arrangements can be made to take along your bicycle as well, but space is limited so notify the boat ahead of time. Additionally, the crew can accommodate disabled passengers and their wheelchairs or ECVs.

We can hang out at Nixon's Sandbar for some fun local flare or anchor next to some weekend party goers on their megayachts and enjoy some entertaining people watching. If you prefer a more relaxing setting, Hobie Island Beach Park or Dinner Key offer just that.

Florida Keys:

Upper Keys - Departing from Ft. Lauderdale it is a 2 day journey, stopping at either Miami or Coconut Grove along the way. We then journey inside the 70n square mile, John Pennycamp Coral Reef State Park. It is the first underwater state park and boasts beautiful coral formations, sunken statues and abundant marine life. Time and weather permitting Tavernier Key offers still more reefs, a Wild Bird Sanctuary and a drawbridge to the Gulf side. From there we can access a calm anchorage ideal for paddle boarding and a quick dinghy ride to The Oceanview Inn & Sports Pub in Islamorada for entertainment and local fare.

Middle Keys - Picking up from either Tavernier or Marathon (not available on a round trip FTL trip). We can either dock at one of our favorite secluded marinas for quick access to restaurants, bars, grocery and liquor store and the famous Sea Turtle Hospital or moor in mooring field for a dinghy ride to the same. There are many beautiful reefs and snorkel spots to hit as we travel south. We make a stop in Bahia Honda State Park to snorkel the ledge, visit the beach or do some paddle boarding. If seas permit, there is an amazing reef with Goliath Groupers off of Big Pine. From there it's off to Key West. From Key West we will visit Snipe Point, undeniably the most beautiful beach in the Keys accessible only by boat. Disembarking in Key West.

Key West - Oh Key West! One of our favorite places. We highly recommend upgrading to a couple nights at a marina to get a taste of all the land based activities. It is a one-of-a-kind adventure. From the water there are calm anchorages with legendary sunsets, Snipe Pointe - a sandbar/beach on the Gulf side, out-island beaches and swim and snorkel spots.

Freeport to Abacos - From West End towards Yankee Cay or Big Fish / Barefoot area, then southbound through Spanish, Nunjack, Green Turtle to Treasure Cay. Disembarking in Treasure Cay.

Abacos South - Departing Treasure Cay towards Great Guana, passing through Man of War, Hope Town, Lubbers to the Pelicans.

Blue Water Sailing - From Pelican long blue water sail around the southern point of Great Abaco Island and up to Sandy Point. This is more of an advanced sail in open seas, for the adventurer looking to get some blue water time, not focusing on the excursions. With a winddown at Gorda Cay or "Castaway Cay" as Disney calls it. Disembarking at Sandy Point.

How long is the ride down to Key West? Key West is approximately 160 miles from Miami. The bus ride takes about 4-4.5 hours with a stop for refreshments.

How long do we get to spend in Key West? Our guests get to spend approximately 5-6 hours in exploring Key West. Our bus drops you off right in the heart of Old Town Key West, allowing you easy access to all of the area's main attractions. You are also welcome to spend the night (or a few nights) and return on a different day (there is a $25 fee for different-day return).

Big Pine Key has several stop-worthy places you should consider visiting, including Key Deer National Wildlife Refuge, Blue Water Hole, and Bahia State Park and Beach.

Key Deer National Wildlife Refuge is the home of a unique white-tailed deer. Fewer than a thousand deer are alive today. They walk, wade, and swim between islands, eating the native tropical plant species. These deer do not exist anywhere else in the world and are a sight to see.

Blue Water Hole should be on your bucket list simply for its sheer beauty. Unique fish species, turtles, Key Deer, iguanas, snakes, and alligators call this previous limestone quarry home. Also, it is the only freshwater lake in the entire Florida Keys.

At Bahia Honda State Park & Beach, the waters are pristine, the airs are refreshing, and the beaches are sandy and secluded. You’ll have the shade of tropical palm trees to hang out under and enjoy this piece of paradise.

Dolphin Research Center at Grassy Key

This not-for-profit marine mammal education and research facility allows you to get close to its playful dolphins.

Come here to swim with dolphins and catch them in action training or performing acrobatic stunts! This place is particularly great for families with small kids. In fact, onsite is a Family Sprayground, a marine-themed splash pad just for the fun of your young ones.

Marathon: 13 Islands in a City

Marathon is a city in the Keys set on 13 islands. It is considered the most boat-friendly city in the US. Here you’ll have several great restaurants, shops and boutiques, beaches, parks, and much to see.

The Turtle Hospital is one place to go. It specializes in rehabilitating sea turtles to return safely to their natural habitats. The hospital is on the grounds of what used to be “Hidden Harbor Motel.” Today, the motel rooms are now the living quarters for rehab staff.

Tour this place to see precious sea turtles thriving here. Also, not all turtles can be released into the wild, so at the end of your tour, you can feed turtles who call this hospital their home.

We have personally done this drive over ten times. It’s become a favorite with all the guests I get from England. This guide will share our favorite experiences and essential stops in the Florida Keys!

Key Largo will be your first stop en route from Miami to Key West. It’s approximately 69 miles from Miami to Key Largo, and the drive will take about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Do yourself a favor. Take the slightly longer Card Sound toll route, and stop at Alabama Jack’s Bar.

This little biker bar is a hidden treasure off the beaten path but worth the stop! Here you’ll enjoy a tasty lunch and a cold beer in quaint surroundings with epic views. Watch boats cruise by while listening to live country music, and think about where to stop next on your road trip .

How long does it take to drive from Miami to Key West?

Miami and Key West are 165 miles apart; driving them straight takes over 3 hours. However, if you have the time, plan to spend 2-3 days between Miami and Key West. There are lots of unique stops between them. With this time frame, you can hit the highlights while allowing yourself to experience the Keys fully.

There is no question that the road from Miami to Key West is a famous tourist drive and is very safe. Prepare for a great road trip by driving safely, taking your time, and enjoying your time!

Use Mile Makers For a Road Trip

First, most attraction locations on a Miami to Key West Road Trip are near a certain Mile Marker.

The Florida Keys officially begin at Mile Marker 118! The trip to Key West is just over 100 miles from here.

The road ends at Mile Marker 0, Key West’s southernmost end. As you travel between those mile markers, you’ll encounter many amazing stop-offs with tons of fun and adventure.

The Florida Keys comprise hundreds of small islands that make up Key West. The islands are all connected by Highway 1 or “The Overseas Highway.”

Get There By Catamaran

However you choose to get to Key West, a day on the water is beckoning. So if you’ve never tried catamaran sailing , this is the ideal time to do it. Whether you want to explore the surrounding beaches or travel down the southernmost point of the USA, a catamaran is a way to go.

With its twin hulls offering far more stability than a single-hulled yacht, even less experienced sailors will feel at ease. But with the option of a skipper and crew, you can leave the navigation to them and enjoy the magnificent coastal views.

A catamaran charter is not only a relaxing way to get to know Key West and its surroundings. Key West is also an ideal spot to indulge in all your favorite watersports.

Go snorkeling and explore Key West’s magnificent reefs. Like the US Alligator, most of them were created by sinking ships over the years. Her sunken remains are 100 yards off the shore of the Alligator lighthouse, and this ship is now home to coral and teeming with sea life.

Get There By Luxury Coach

If you didn’t drive to Key West from Miami, you’ve got some options for your return trip. Once it’s time to head back to Miami, how are you planning on getting there? A shuttle from Miami to Key West is an affordable and comfortable option if you don’t want to fly both ways.

The Keys Shuttle trip from Key West to Miami International Airport typically takes 4 hours. That’s roughly the same time it would take you if you hired a vehicle for the drive back. But let’s be honest; you enjoy the scenery more when you’re not sitting in the driver’s seat.

Solo travelers especially will prefer this mode of transport for the return trip. With a luxury coach ride , you’ll still have the option of stopping off at other Keys and doing more sightseeing.

If you didn’t get to stop at the many museums, parks, and other attractions on your trip to Key West, there’s hope. You can still visit them on your return journey to Miami.

Road trips are always great, but you’ll get to Key West from Miami or the reverse much faster if you fly. Flights from Miami to Key West usually take about an hour or a bit less. Get on an early flight from Miami Airport to Key West International Airport, and you’ll have plenty of time to see the sights.

You won’t even have to stray far from the airport for all the fun to begin. Take to the sky for the best sights, with a slightly different mode of transport. Fly-KeyWest Helicopter Tours is on Roosevelt Boulevard and operates out of Key West Airport.

Some parts of the island are only accessible from the sea or the air. A short helicopter tour offers the thrill of seeing all Key West offers from a different perspective.

This helicopter tour will allow you to spot dolphins, sea turtles, and stingrays without getting out on the water. It’s had rave reviews from countless satisfied customers and is an exciting vacation option for both solo travelers and couples.

State Parks To Visit En Route From Miami To Key West

The everglades – florida city.

In the Everglades National Park, you can turn off Highway 1 south of Florida City on your way to the Florida Keys.

You’ll want to try an Everglades boat tour before continuing your trip. Everglades tour organizers usually offer short kayaking and raft tours, too. Or, take an airboat ride.

Once you get back on the road, driving the 48 miles from Key Largo to Marathon, your next main stop will take about an hour or so.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park – Key Largo

The first underwater state park in the United States covers approximately 70 square nautical miles. In addition to kayaking through mangrove swamps and relaxing in hammocks, there are many exciting things to see beneath the park’s surface.

The underwater world is filled with coral reefs, sea life, sculptures, and coral. You’ll also find some of the same sea life in the park’s 30,000-gallon saltwater aquarium and the natural wonders.

Blue Hole – Big Pine Key

Now you’ll be doing the last leg of your trip. In an hour’s drive (about 45 miles) from Marathon, you’ll arrive at your destination – Key West. But you’ll probably want to stop en route at Blue Hole at Big Pine Key.

This nature reserve is an old abandoned rock quarry, attracting visitors from all over. Abundant marine life, wildlife, flora, and fauna can be found here. You may love it so much here that you decide to spend a while.

Nature lovers will find some terrific hiking trails surrounding this wildlife refuge. There are a few rules to safeguard the wildlife species in the area, but you’re still guaranteed to have a good time.

Lignumvitae Key State Park – Islamorada

Most of Florida’s Upper Keys used virgin tropical hardwood hammocks; these forests have been lost to development on other islands. In 1919, wealthy Miami chemist William J. Matheson purchased the island and built a caretaker’s house with a windmill for electricity and a cistern for rainwater.

This island forest’s visitor center is located in his hideaway today. From Friday through Sunday, ranger-led tours are given twice daily. Private boats or tour boats are the only way to access the park. You can rent a boat or kayak from Robbie’s Marina or take a tour boat. Near Mile Marker 78.5 on U.S. 1.

Indian Key Historic State Park – Islamorada

A lucrative business on the tiny island salvaged cargo from shipwrecks in the Florida Keys at the time.

Visitors to the park can swim, sunbathe, and hike here, accessible only by boat. Rental kayaks are available from a local charter company.

Curry Hammock State Park – Marathon

A group of islands makes up this park in the Middle Keys that provide public access to swimming, a playground, picnic tables, grills, and showers. One of the largest populations of thatch palms in the United States is found on these tropical islands’ hardwood hammocks. Tropical wildlife relies on mangrove swamps, seagrass beds, and wetlands for habitat.

Visiting Florida’s state parks from 8 a.m. to sundown every day of the year is possible.

Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park – Islamorada

Built around the early 1900s, Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad was built using limestone from Key Largo and fossilized coral. Keystone was produced at the quarry until the 1960s after the railroad was built.

Today’s visitors can observe cross sections of ancient coral on the eight-foot-high quarry walls and learn about the quarry’s history and operation. The park preserves samples of quarry machinery.

Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park

Five short, self-guiding trails allow visitors to enjoy the island’s natural attributes. The park has picnic tables. There are educational exhibits about the history of this site at the Visitor Center, which is open Friday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Visitor Center is located at mile marker 85.5 on Windley Key near Islamorada.

Long Key State Park – Layton

The Spanish named Cayo Vivora, or Rattlesnake Key, because its shape resembles a snake with its jaws wide open. Long Key was the site of a luxurious fishing resort destroyed by a hurricane in 1935.

There are two land-based trails and a chain of lagoons for visitors to explore on this island. A panoramic view of the island and its profusion of plant and animal life can be gained from the observation tower at the end of the Golden Orb Trail, which leads visitors through five natural communities.

Here you can find some of the best bonefishing in the Keys. Camping facilities overlook the Atlantic Ocean. 67400 Overseas Highway, Mile Marker 67.5.

Park Passes

There’s so much to see and do en route and in Marathon. Get a US Park Pass before leaving so you won’t miss out on the best attractions.

If you’re traveling as a family, your kids will love visiting some U.S. National Parks. A road trip with stops that are both fun and educational – it’s a great combo.

Bridges For The Best Photo Ops

As with every road trip, the best fun along the way is not the scenery but the stops. So include some photo opportunities on your next part of the journey. You want to send amazing pics to your friends, right?

Your road trip will take you over several bridges, including the Seven Mile Bridge. Why is this particular bridge so famous? It’s the longest bridge in the Florida Keys, and several movies have featured this structure.

It’s the perfect spot for super vacation snaps, with Instagram -worthy views in all directions. So be a tourist in your state and appreciate the history of old bridges like these.

This bridge was known as the “Eighth Wonder of the World” at its original construction in 1912. Rebuilt in 1982, the modern bridge is far safer and more user-friendly. But you can still walk along about 2.2 miles of the old bridge.

Key West Attractions

Southernmost point buoy.

Congratulations. You have finally made it. You’ve arrived at the Southernmost Point in the Continental United States. And one of the most photographed attractions here in Key West is the Southernmost Point Buoy. You’ll find it on the corner of South Street and Whitehead Street.

It’s the ultimate selfie spot in Key West, but you may have to wait a while because everyone else probably thinks so too! The landmark was erected in 1983 and marked the point that’s only 90 miles from Cuba . Once you’ve taken that ‘selfie,’ there’s a piece of history nearby that you’ll want to see.

Ernest Hemingway House

Visit Ernest Hemingway House on Whitehead Street for a different attraction. This building is a must-see for all visitors to Key West. The residence of American writer Ernest Hemingway during the 1930s is now a museum. Situated across from the Key West Lighthouse, it’s the museum you must visit on your day trip to Key West.

Key West Beaches

Of course, you didn’t travel from Miami to Key West to stay indoors. So get to the beach and enjoy a few hours in the sun. Smathers Beach is known as one of the best beaches in Key West . You’ll find everything you need here: watersports, beach bars, picnic tables, and nearby bike trails.

Walking Tour Of The Old Town

No matter how you get there, once in Key West, you’re spoiled for choice for fun activities. Numerous day trip excursions and tours are on offer but are usually water-related. You’d probably prefer to stretch your legs and get to know the town.

A walking tour of Key West is your best bet. And the Key West Southernmost Food And Cultural Tour is a tour with a delicious difference.

First-time visitors or solo travelers love this innovative tour. You’ll get to explore the old town’s historic district, but don’t eat lunch before this. You’ll want to arrive hungry.

The tour includes tastings at some of Key West’s top eating establishments. You could even get some coupons for restaurants or diners during your stay. So if you stay a while in Key West, you’ll know exactly where to go for a good meal.

Fun For ‘Foodies’ In The Keys

A day trip to Key West isn’t complete without enjoying some delectable Key Lime Pie. Key Lime Pie is a Florida taste sensation and made it into the law books. A Florida statute in 2006 designated Key Lime Pie as ‘the official Florida state pie.

Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe is a must-stop for the best Key Lime Pie in the Keys. This store has supplied the locals with Key Lime delicacies for over twenty-five years. It’s about time you tried them, too.

You’ll find this charming establishment at two different locations: on Elizabeth Street and Front Street. But if you’re short on time, and need to get back home, don’t despair. You can still sample their amazing Key Lime Pie and other tasty goodies. They will happily ship it to you wherever you are.

Of course, once you’re back in Miami, there’s always Versailles Restaurant in Little Havana. They have delicious Cuban food, to be sure. But the bakery adjoining the restaurant offers some decent Key Lime Pie too.

How long is the ferry ride from Miami to Key West?

An excursion on the Key West Ferry will take passengers to the southernmost point of America at 40mph in a luxurious catamaran. Riding the Key West Express costs approximately $155 per adult round-trip.

Is Key West worth a day trip from Miami?

Yes, if you are short on time. However, I don’t recommend it. If you make a day trip, you won’t have time to see all the natural parks, and you’ll have to pick specific attractions to visit. It’s impossible to see it all on a day trip.

Is it better to fly to Key West or drive from Miami?

Flying is “technically” quicker. Flights from Miami to Key West take 46 minutes. However, add in getting to the airport and checking in, and you’ll be close to the 3.5 hours it takes to drive. Flights are also expensive, typically at least $150 per person return.

Closing Thoughts

One of the best routes in Florida is Miami to Key West! Once you get south and reach the first Key, you’ll think you’ve left the states and entered the Caribbean ! There’s nothing quite like it, and it’s a trip everyone should take at least once in their life!

A Miami to Key West Road Trip is something that should be on EVERYONE’S bucket list. With over 600 keys strung together by overwater bridges, this marks one of the most scenic road trips in the world .

On my road trip, I was cursed with very bad weather most of my trip (which is extremely rare in the Florida Keys) . Even though I had an amazing trip and saw so much, I didn’t get to do everything on my itinerary.

Which just means I have to go back for round two 😉

In this Key West Road Trip travel guide, I detail my 3 recommended sleeping spots, a few must-pack items, common questions, an extremely detailed road trip from Miami to Key West itinerary, and a little bonus section incase you want to swap anything out!

3 Recommended Sleeping Stops

On your Florida Keys road trip, I would recommend stopping in three different spots to break up your drive. The spots I would recommend are Miami, somewhere in between Miami & Key West (like Key Largo ), and Key West! Plan to pack and re-pack your bag a few times, but I promise it will be worth it! 🙂

I would HIGHLY recommend stopping at least once on your Road trip from Miami to Key West! There is a ton to see on that 165 mile stretch, so you will want to have time to explore. Here are my recommendations…

In Miami, I stayed in the Downtown Area, specifically the Brickell neighborhood. This is where all the best food is, much closer to the airport / start of the keys, and tons of rooftop bars! Many people probably think to stay in Miami Beach area, which is still a great area!

This was my thought process.. I knew I would be staying in beach front / water front areas and eating beach bar food for the remainder of this trip, so I decided to stay in the downtown area to get more of a variety! I did spend the day on Miami Beach, but I felt food and bars were better in the downtown Brickell area.

Key Largo or One of the Middle Keys

Like I said before, the 165+ mile stretch between Miami to Key West is scenic and has tons to see! I think it is a good idea to spend at least one night in between Miami and Key West to break up your drive. That way you can have more time to explore all the sites between Miami and Key West. 🙂

For me, I chose to stay in Key Largo, which was great! It is the first & biggest Key in the Florida Keys and is home to the first underwater state park in the USA!

What I loved the most about the few days I spent in Key Largo was that even though the Florida Keys is a popular tourist destination, they have done a great job at keeping their small town charm! It doesn’t feel overly touristy or overran by large chains like Best Westerns, Marriots, and Hyatts (nothing against those, but it’s nice to stay in a local, boutique hotel!).

For specifics, I stayed at the Kona Kai Resort ! This small, boutique resort was right on the water, had an art gallery on site, pool / hot tub on the property, and each room was an individual cottage with tons of privacy! And on top of all that.. the staff was seriously the nicest people I have ever met. It’s rare when you go to a resort and they make you feel like they are welcoming you into their home.

In Key West, there are TONS of options for hotels. Whether you want to stay in an Old Victorian style bed and breakfast, Airbnb, or luxury resort.. there is an option for everyone!

One thing I was surprised about in Key West was how easy it was to get around! There are bike rental companies all over the island and most hotels have free bikes available for you. There is also an abundance of Uber / Lyfts (which I was really shocked about)! For this reason, you can pretty much stay anywhere on Key West without an issue.

The hotel I chose to stay in was the brand new Captiana Key West ! It is an Opal property, which if you have never stayed at an Opal property before.. you can thank me later .

It was right on the water with it’s own private beach, the rooms were all HUGE with a couch area to hang out on, all of the balconies face the ocean, and they have so many nice details!

For example, they offer snacks and unlimited complimentary water bottles for their guests. It’s the little things, isn’t it ? 🙂

Miami to Key West Road Trip Itinerary

Okay, now that you know where to stay to break up your road trip, let’s dive in! This itinerary is for 5 full days (not including travel days), but I will have a section at the bottom titled, “Bonus Ideas” if you plan on spending more time or want to swap something out! 🙂

Miami was a city that completely surprised me, in a good way! I absolutely LOVED Miami and already want to go back to spend some more time exploring it. If you have the time to spare, I would consider extending your time in Miami and spending two days 🙂

If you are staying in the Brickell area of Miami like I recommended, catch an Uber / Lyft to Miami Beach for some site seeing during the day and then explore downtown Brickell at night! I would NOT recommend driving to the beach (even if you have a car) because the parking situation in Miami Beach is some of the worst I have ever seen. Save yourself the stress!!

Here are my top recommendations for a day in Miami:

Get Cuban Coffee from any of the small Cuban stands around Miami!
Eat the best Pizza EVER at MisterO1’s !
Explore the shops, farmer’s markets, restaurants, and bars on Lincoln Road!
Walk along the scenic Miami Beach Boardwalk, seeing all the uniquely shaped & colored Lifeguard Stands!
Rent bikes to cruise along the bike path along the beach!
Get delicious craft cocktails at the Betsy Hotel on Miami Beach!
Have the most amazing sushi and Asian food at Komodo in downtown Miami!
See downtown Miami from the best view possible at Sugar Rooftop Bar !

Day 2: Drive to Key Largo, Stopping at Everglades National Park

Day two is the first true day of your road trip! On the way from Miami to Key Largo, you will be passing right by one of the most unique and largest National Parks in the USA.. The Everglades !

I am not going to lie, I had completely false stereotypes about the Everglades. I assumed it would be miles of swamp land, it would smell, and be quite dangerous with all the Alligators.. but all of that is false!

The water in the everglades is actually a river that is very clean. There are tons of different species of fish, turtles, birds, manatees, snakes, panthers, and of course, Alligators! Only 30 minutes out of the way, you can do an airboat tour through the Everglades to see some gators & other amazing wildlife.

Most of the boat tours are just north of the town of Homestead , which there will be several tours to choose from. I price shopped and went based on reviews and decided to go with Coopertown Airboat Tours ! They are one of the first companies to ever start offering airboat tours through the Everglades, the tour guides were entertaining & educating, was the lowest priced, had thousands of 5* reviews, and we saw TONS of Alligators!

TIP: I would plan to leave your hotel in Miami pretty early and get to the Everglades no later than 10am! That way you can spend about an hour at the Everglades and still get a good amount of the day to spend in Key Largo!

After exploring the Everglades, head onto Key Largo! The drive from Coopertown Airboat Tours to Key Largo is a little over an hour, so if you take my advice to by at the Everglades by 10am, you should arrive in Key Largo around 12pm – 12:30pm! 🙂

Grab yourself some lunch at The Fish House (which was featured on Drivers, Dive in’s and Dives, Food Network, and many other news stations!) and then head to the first ever underwater state park, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park !

At this state park, you can go to one of the few white sand beaches in the area (Canon Beach), kayak through mangroves , or go on snorkeling boat tours !

After you’ve done plenty of adventuring, it’s time to reward yourself with comfort food, good drinks, and the best atmosphere in the Keys at the Florida Keys Brewery ! When Joseph and I went to the Florida Keys Brewery, a famous country band (LoCash, heard of them?!) was there performing a free concert! Local’s said this happens ALL the time!

This brewery had amazing beer and the cutest beer garden in the back! Even on a Tuesday night when we went the place was packed, which always means the food & drinks are good!

Day 3: Key Largo –> Key West, One of the most scenic drives in the world!

The drive from Key Largo to Key West is going to be where you will want to take your time and explore all the beautiful scenery!

Something that I wish I would have known is that the highway gets pretty backed up and the speed limit is quite slow. The keys are very narrow with everything being right off the highway (not a town that you get off the highway and can walk around). For this reason, people are constantly turning on and off the main highway, causing everyone to drive pretty slow.

I don’t think this is a big deal if you are aware, but just keep in mind that you can’t be in a rush for your Key West Road Trip!

There are endless things to do on this 100 mile stretch between Key Largo and Key West, and here are some of my must-see recommendations:

Stop at Robbie’s Marina to explore the shops, eat at their yummy restaurant on the water, and feed the tarpons!
Wander through the Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters where they have tons of touch tanks, lagoons filled with tarpons, shark tank, and a snorkeling excursion where you can get in a tank with Sting Rays & Fish!
Have a drink or some food at Sunset Grille and Raw Bar , which overlooks the famous 7 mile bridge!
Drive across the longest bridge in the Keys, 7 mile bridge !
Visit Bahia Honda State Park to hang out at the beach. This area is known to have the best beaches in the Keys, especially Calusa Beach.

You can definitely see all of these things in one day, at a comfortable pace. I would not try to cram too much more into this day than this, or else you will feel pretty rushed! Plus, you will want to make sure you get to Key West in time for sunset (trust me on this one!!).

Overall, I would plan to take your time, have a few spots that are “must-see stops,” but try not to over plan! The best part of this Florida Keys road trip is the drive and exploring whatever looks inviting to you. 🙂

Once you arrive in Key West, check into your hotel and head to Mallory Square for their nightly Sunset Celebration! Every night you can expect crowds to form in Mallory Square to witness the best sunset in the keys.

For dinner, head to Half Shell Raw Bar which had the BEST stone crab I’ve ever had! This restaurant sits right on the water and is only a 15 minute walk from Mallory Square.

This restaurant has been around since 1972, which just shows how good their food is! They are situated right on a dock and bring in all their fresh catch daily. The food was DELICIOUS!

If you’re not exhausted from the day, you can end your night bar hopping along Duval Street ! This street is filled with live music shows, bars of every shape and size, and easily the most lively area of Key West. There are over 43 bars on Duval Street, but here are some of my recommendations:

Smallest Bar in Key West (literally so small!!)
Sloppy Joes (open since 1933)
Mangoes (really good cocktails!!)
Flying Monkeys (colorful patio with frozen cocktails)

Day 4: Explore Key West

I’ve written a full Key West Itinerary listing everything you can do in Key West, but I will give you a quick run through here…

Key West is definitely where all the action is in the keys and you will want to make sure you give yourself at least a full day to explore all the sites! Are you ready to be the ultimate tourist?! 😉

Here are my top recommendations for visiting Key West:

Explore the “Southernmost Point” where you can see the Southernmost Point sign , Southernmost hotel, Southernmost bar… you get the point don’t ya?! 😉
Take your touristy photo at Mile Marker 0 !
Visit all the shops and museums in Mallory Square
Get Cuban Coffee at Cuban Coffee Queen
Spend the day at the most beautiful beach, Smathers Beach !
Parasailing in Paradise – here is a great tour !
Eat the best Key Lime Pie from Blue Heaven !

After you’ve played tourist all day, it’s time to unwind and see a famous Key West Sunset from another perspective… a sunset Catamaran Cruise!

There are several catamaran cruises in Key West, but the most popular one (that I feel is more of a fun, party vibe) is Fury Key West ! They provide bottomless wine, beer, margaritas, food & have a live band on board!

Even though we had a really bad weather day (link sprinkling and no sunset), we still had SO much fun! We luckily got paired on board with, what Joseph and I think, were professional dancers. They were putting on a show during the cruise and putting everyone else to shame, ha! 🙂

Day 5: Sand Bar Boat Tour

On the last day of your Miami to Key West road trip, it’s time to end with a BANG! This is something that I plan on coming back to Key West to do because we ended up having a REALLY rainy day on our last day. All the local’s said it hasn’t rained like that day in over a year … so, just bad luck I guess? 🙂

Anyways, many local’s told us about their favorite activity in Key West which is taking a boat out to the sand bars! You can rent boats or go with a tour company, but their are many different sand bars a short boat ride away.

I would recommend packing some drinks and sandwiches and spending the day on your own little slice of paradise! Here is a fun private tour that takes you out to sand bars!

For dinner, it’s time to head to Joseph & I’s favorite restaurant on Key West, LL’s Test Kitchen ! Like I mentioned before, it’s easy to get sick of “beach bar food” after a week of eating it for Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner. LL’s test kitchen has amazing, high quality food!

We opted in for the Pasta Carbonara and it was seriously to die for! And on top of that, the view from their wrap around deck is 10/10!!

TIP: Try to go at sunset to get the best view possible! 🙂

What to Pack for a Miami to Key West Road Trip

I never want to bore you with a long packing list, especially when you came here to read an itinerary! BUT, I always like to recommend a few must-have’s for this specific trip…

1. Reef Safe Sun Block!!

If you plan on snorkeling in the Florida Keys, they have the only living coral reef in North America. AKA we need to protect it at all costs! Do your part by buying reef safe sunscreen, which my favorite is Sunbum ! You can snag it right off Amazon or you can buy it at most stores.

If you plan on being at the beach or doing any snorkeling tours, you will want the perfect camera to capture those memories! Go Pro is completely waterproof, durable, and is perfect for action shots! Click here for the one I have!

3. A Cute Sun Hat

This one from ASOS is my FAVORITE! Literally so cute and is super durable for travel!! It’s not too big but also covers your face perfectly, highly recommend.

4. One Click Presets

Is it worth driving from Miami to Key West?

YES, ABSOLUTELY YES! The drive from Miami to Key West is absolutely breathtaking and is one of the best road trips in the world! I do think you should drive from Miami to Key West, but then FLY out of Key West to go home! The small propeller planes that fly you above the keys let you see a completely different perspective 🙂

How long is the drive from Miami to Key West?

The drive time is roughly 3.5 hours if you drove straight through, but as you can tell from this itinerary.. there is much to see along this 165 mile stretch! Plus, there is sometimes traffic along the main highway, so depending on what time of year / day of the week / time of day… it might take you much longer!

Can you see Cuba from Key West?

Unfortunately, no! With Cuba being 90 miles from Key West, that is simply too far to spot. Even if you go up to the Key West Lighthouse, you will still be lucky if you see past 40 miles!

Do I need a car in Key West?

NO! I was shocked by how many UBers / Lyfts were available in Key West. I am not kidding when I say there was a maximum 2 minute wait for a car at any area of Key West. This is a great budget travel hack because you can return your rental car when you arrive in Key West instead of when you fly out. This can save you a few days worth of car rental payments!

Are beaches free in Key West?

Most beaches are free in Key West as long as they are not a state or National park. The most popular beach in Key West, Smathers Beach, is completely free other than the small parking fees for street parking.

How many days should I spend in Key West?

I would recommend a few days in Key West, especially if you plan on doing a few boat excursions! It is a fairly small area, so if you plan to just explore what is on the island, I do not think you would need more than two days. If you plan to do a boat tour out to sand bars, catamaran snorkel cruises, or other excursions, I would say three to four days!

What is the best time to go to Key West?

Florida is sunny and warm year round, but it will depend on what type of trip you want to do! If you want to do snorkel cruises and relax at the beach, you will want to go late spring / early fall. If you want perfect weather with no humidity and no rain, I would recommend the early spring / late fall & winter months. Summer is warm but VERY humid, so beware!

Explore & Sail The Florida Keys

The Dry Tortugas , a US National Park made mostly of open water and 6 small islands, is 70 miles west of Key West. This destination features pristine water, coral reefs, and the historical Fort Jefferson.

A barrier reef runs 221 miles along Florida’s southeast coast from Key Biscayne to the Dry Tortugas. It is the only living coral barrier reef in the continental U.S. and is the third largest coral barrier reef system in the world. The reef is protected as an underwater state park known as the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , the first underwater sea park of its kind.

Stephen and I along with many friends have cruised the Keys many times as well as driven from Miami to Key West on several occasions. We discover a new gem each time we venture into the Florida Keys. The Florida Rambler is a great guide of all the places of interest in the Florida Keys, mile marker to mile marker, all across the Overseas Highway ! Be prepared to see unusual sights like Perky’s Bat Tower on Sugarloaf Key, Jules’ Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, and the Seven Mile Bridge .

On our most recent sailing cruise down the Florida Keys to Key West, we were positioning to sail to Cuba as a part of a rally to build relations between the sailing communities in the States and Cuba. Here are a few highlights from our most recent sail down the Keys:

Biscayne Bay & No Name Harbor

Biscayne Bay is a beautiful and protected sailing area with several anchorages like Elliott Key Marina or Dinner Key . Marinas include Bay Side Marina (downtown Miami) or Miami Beach Marina . There is a lot to explore in Biscayne Bay National Park including the Cape Florida Lighthouse at the mouth of Biscayne Bay. It was first lit in 1825 and reconstructed in 1846. It is at the end of Key Biscayne in the Cape Florida State Park . A visit to the lighthouse, the nature trails, and the beach is a treat.

Biscayne Bay is also the site of Stiltsville, the famous pastel-colored houses on stilts. Stiltsville is somewhat mysterious with a history that dates back to the 1930s, when “Crawfish Eddie Walker” built the first shack on stilts above the water. Stories of illegal alcohol and gambling abounded during its heyday as it was the playground for the cream of Miami society. Today, only seven of the houses remain after hurricanes, fires, and neglect saw many of the houses demolished.

Miami Beach and Coconut Grove are just a stone’s throw away. Exploring Miami Beach is high-octane fun, especially the famous Ocean Drive where you can rub shoulders with the rich and famous and a tour of the art deco buildings is a must!. Also close by is Little Havana, the vibrant and colorful center of Hispanic culture in Miami and the best-known neighborhood for Cuban exiles in the world. Its festivals, including the Calle Ocho Festival and Viernes Culturales (Cultural Fridays) are world famous.

Coconut Grove is a tropical oasis with a distinct Bohemian flair. Founded in 1873 by an eclectic mix of pioneers, artists, intellectuals and adventurers, it thrives to this day with charming boutiques, sidewalk cafes, and a large, very active sailing community.

No Name Harbor is a stopover for many cruisers before sailing to the Bahamas or the Caribbean.

Hawks Channel provides fantastic sailing. The barrier reef provides great protection from the ocean swells, but you still catch the breeze for some spectacular sailing. Bahia Honda, one of the best anchorages in the Florida Keys, is another one of our favorite anchorages. You can drop your hook near the historic Old Keys Trestle Railroad Bridge and enjoy the calm natural harbor at Bahia Honda State Park .

Explore The Quaint Village Of Key West

Key West is rich with history, is quaint and beautiful and known for wild parties. It’s a gathering place for all kinds of humanity, some bordering on the bizarre! A stroll up and down Duval Street, Key West’s popular main party drag, boasts many art galleries, shops, bars, and restaurants and is prime people-watching territory.

Every day, two hours before the sunset, the daily Sunset Celebration on Mallory Square gets going as buskers, street performers, and craft vendors set up for crowds of people. The sunset over the ocean is breathtakingly beautiful and one of Key West’s most photographed sites. Everybody tries to catch a glimpse of the green flash from Mallory Square everyday. Marquesas Islands, A Tranquil Lagoon

The calm waters and nice sandy beaches provide wonderful swimming, diving, and snorkeling. The area is alive with sea life, including giant turtles, sharks, rays, and birds. Fishing is fantastic here! You literally throw the hook in and you immediately feel the nibbles on the bait. Fresh fish for dinner! So exciting! We managed to anchor about a 100 yards off the beautiful white beaches in about 10 ft of water, making it an easy swim to shore. It is also the site of spectacular sunsets. We managed to catch the green flash here on a clear evening!

Explore a 19th Century Fort On The Dry Tortugas

The Dry Tortugas is a cluster of seven islands, about 70 NM west from Key West in the Gulf of Mexico. It is a long day sail from Key West or you can also leave from from Marquesas Keys, about a 40 NM sail. It can only be reached by seaplane or by boat and is the most isolated and least-visited national park in the U.S. There is no fresh water on the island, hence being called the “Dry” Tortugas. The islands have a fascinating history with gorgeous scenery and the coral reefs surrounding the islands are teeming with colorful fish.

We anchored out in crystal clear water and went ashore on Garden Key for a tour of Fort Jefferson National Monument . Originally built in the mid 1800’s as a military fort to be used by Union forces during the Civil War, the fort was converted to a prison. Its msot famous inmate was Dr. Mudd notorious for his involvement in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The other islands worth a visit are Loggerhead Key, Hospital Key, and Bush Key.

We had a super time exploring the Florida Keys and we highly recommend this cruising ground to cruisers.

"The Conch Republic," as it's known to locals, is also the most Caribbean-like travel destination in Florida, and it has something of an "anything goes" reputation for its laid-back attitude to, well, pretty much everything.

For these and so many other reasons – a lovely climate for most of the year, plenty of attractions and fun things to do, along with a great food scene – Key West is very much the kind of place you'll want to visit time and time again.

Getting here can be part of the fun, too. While it's accessible via a variety of means of transport, you should certainly take the dramatic US1 Highway at least once. Also known as the Overseas Highway , this spectacularly scenic route offers no end of stunning vistas and great places to stop for a taste of that unique Keys' lifestyle.

1. From Miami to Key West by Car

The scenery along the Overseas Highway (US1) is simply stunning, with a great deal of this iconic 113-mile-long route (170 if you count the stretch from Miami to the start of the Overseas Highway) being above water.

While the journey takes an average of just over three-and-a-half hours without a break (longer if it's a weekend or rush hour), you'll want to add at least an hour or so extra for photo stops. And be sure to set your satellite navigation just for the thrill of seeing yourself surrounded on all sides by ocean on your digital map!

If you have even more time to spend along this iconic route, consider a stop at one or more of the larger communities along the Florida Keys, some of which offer a variety of great tourist attractions . Bahia Honda State Park in Big Pine Key, for example, boasts two great beaches and the National Key Deer Refuge Nature Center. Marathon is home to the Dolphin Research Center, which offers a variety of unique feeding and swim experiences, as well as the fascinating Turtle Hospital.

If you're not driving your own vehicle, you'd do well to consider picking up a car rental at either Miami or Key West and do at least one one-way journey by road. The bragging rights alone are worth it.

Finally, a word about parking in Key West: it's difficult! A good alternative is to make use of the first-rate Key West Park N' Ride service, located out of the Old Town Garage on Grinnell and Caroline Streets. You can leave your vehicle here for the full day and enjoy all-day shuttle rides around town.

2. From Miami to Key West by Tour

For those vacationing in Miami but wanting to get a taste for the Keys, a Miami to Key West day trip may be just the ticket. Departures are early – around 6am, with pickups available from hotels and other locations – but you can certainly expect a very full day's itinerary on this fun trip (you'll be gone for approximately 13 hours ).

A definite highlight is the three-plus-hour drive along the overseas Highway. Along the way, you'll take in popular landmarks such as the famous Seven Mile Bridge. One of the world's longest bridges, this spectacular road bridge still runs alongside the original rail bridge dating from 1912 and is still in use by walkers and cyclists.

3. From Miami to Key West by Plane

By far the fastest means of getting to Key West from Miami is by flying. Taking just under an hour for a direct flight from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Key West International Airport (EYW), the route is served by a number of airlines, including American Airlines .

Although it's a short flight , be sure to factor in additional time at the airports. While there are no customs or border facilities to navigate for internal flights like this, security checks can take some time, especially in the busier travel seasons. Fares cost upwards of $200 depending on the time of year, so be sure to check for any flight deals.

For those for whom money isn't an issue (or who can share the expense among friends or family), private charters also operate along this route. Reputable charter companies worth considering include evoJets and Air Key West .

A more affordable option than a private jet, Keys Seaplanes offer floatplane services that can get you to pretty much any point around Key West - even directly to your resort. They also offer a variety of fun sightseeing flights .

While not an issue in Key West given the airport's proximity to the downtown core around Duval Street – it's only a short ride away – getting in and out of Miami's much larger facility can be more challenging. Since a taxi or Uber ride in Miami can be costly for those traveling in and out of the city, and traffic can be heavy, consider using public transit, such as the efficient Metrorail and Tri-Rail services (buses are available but subject to congestion during rush hour).

4. From Miami to Key West by Boat

While there is no regular ferry service between Miami and Key West, there are still a few different options for those determined to arrive by water. Your best bet is to look into a charter boat. Miami Charters offer a variety of options, from high-speed boats to laid-back sailing yachts, as well as fishing charters.

Worth mentioning for those traveling from the Gulf coast of Florida, the Key West Express offers a daily service to Key West from Fort Myers and Marco Island . Departures are early morning, with return voyages taking place late afternoon.

5. From Miami to Key West by Bus

For those on a tight budget – and who aren't in a hurry (it can take up to five hours ) – the regular bus service between Miami and Key West is certainly a good option. Greyhound Lines offer frequent daily departures, including pickups and drop-offs at Miami International Airport and, of course, Key West, for as little as $20 each way.

A smaller bus experience can be enjoyed via Keys Shuttle , which offers frequent daily service between Miami and Key West – as well as regional airports – and most destinations in between.

It depends. If passengers wish to take a break, we will stop at the McDonalds in Tavernier at approximately 9:00 AM. There is also a convince store and a grocery store in the same vicinity.

Key West is super casual. A sundress for ladies and khaki shorts for the gets is as dressed up as anyone usually gets.

How long does it take to drive to Key West?

The road trip takes about 4 hours. Driving the Overseas Highway is a one-of-a-kind experience. You will see some of the most spectacular scenery in the State. You will literally be driving right over the ocean and across a thin chain of islands and bridges, including the famous 7-Mile Bridge. These bridges connect 34 islands that make up the Florida Keys.

How much free time do we have in Key West?

You’ll have approximately 6 hours to explore Key West at your leisure.

What are some good items to bring on the drive to Key West?

Miami to Key West Road Trip Itinerary | All the Best Stops!

This thin strand of pavement skipping along bridges through the Florida Keys is one of the best road trips in the country. If you are thinking about making the drive from Miami to Key West, this Key West drive guide is for you.

The distance from Miami to Key West is a 165 Mile drive and should take you just 3 hours and 20 minutes if you drive to Key West straight without any stops – but then you’d miss one of the greatest American road trips.

We suggest a 2-3 day road trip driving through the Florida Keys to hit most of the best road trip stops, with a few nights to end your Key West drive.

We love this drive and have personally done this drive eight times, and heading back again this year! We always start our drive to Key West in Miami, but you can easily reverse the below guide if you drive northbound from Key West to Miami.

Using the Mile Markers on the Overseas Highway

The first thing to understand is that most of the attractions on a Miami to Key West road trip are referenced by what Mile Marker they are located near.

At Mile Marker 118, you are officially in the Florida Keys! From here, you are just over 100 miles from Key West, with lots of fun adventures ahead of you.

At the southwestern end of Key West lies the end of the road at Mile Marker 0. Between those mile markers, there are plenty of amazing stop-offs with lots of fun and adventures.

On your drive to Key West, you’ll pass through hundreds of small islands, which are called Keys, that make up the Florida Keys. The Keys are all connected by Highway 1 or “The Overseas Highway.”

Top 20 Best Places to Stop on the Drive from Miami to Key West

Every good road trip needs a destination, but many times, the things to see along the way are what really make the trip, and the drive from Miami to Key West is no different.

The Overseas Highway is full of fun and sometimes quirky stops to break up the drive on the way down to Key West. This great American road trip is full of gorgeous beaches, Florida State Parks, tasty restaurants & breweries, and more.

Here’s a collection of some of our favorite stops that are organized from north to south, as you’d find them on the drive down to Key West, labeled by the nearest mile marker on HWY 1.

If you are driving from Key West to Miami, you’ll start at the bottom and work your way up to Miami.

Many people choose to start their Miami to Key West drive by flying into this vibrant city and renting a car in Miami – but don’t just land and leave Miami.

There are a lot of great sights, beaches, and, of course, amazing restaurants in Miami. If you are starting your Florida Keys drive in Miami, do yourself a favor and spend at least a night one night in Miami.

We really like to stay at this Miami hotel, the Iberostar Berkeley Shore Hotel . It is in a great location right on Miami Beach, with a nice pool, a beach area with chairs & umbrellas (a big selling point for us), parking, and more.

Another good place to stay in Miami, and where we recently stayed, is this hotel Uma House by Yurbban South Beach . It is located in South Beach, but not right on the beach.

The hotel is new, has a great location, and is an easy walk to South Beach and restaurants. It is a super cute smaller hotel that has room options with separate bedrooms, which are great for families traveling with kids in Miami.

2. Everglades National Park

On your way down to the Florida Keys on Highway 1, a turn-off just south of Florida City will take you into a portion of the Everglades National Park.

In this guide, we will focus more on the Florida Keys portion of the road trip, but if you have more time, Everglades National Park is definitely worth a stop.

3. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park – (Mile Marker 102.5)

This Florida State Park was the first underwater park in the United States and covers about 70 square nautical miles. At John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, there are mangrove swamps to kayak and hammocks to lounge in, but the main draw to the park is what lies beneath the surface.

Under the waves, you’ll find beautiful coral reefs, plenty of sea life, and even an underwater sculpture. In addition to the natural wonders, the visitor center also has a 30,000-gallon saltwater aquarium filled with some of the same sea life you’ll find in the state park.

If you have time, this is our favorite snorkel trip in the Florida Keys at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. A glass bottom boat tour is a must, book this really good, and super cheap boat tour .

Before or after visiting the state park, stop at Alabama Jacks, our favorite tiki bar in Key Largo. If you are looking for another nearby state park, just a few minutes’ drive away is Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, which is at mile marker 106.

Where to Stay Between Miami and Key West

Most people rush their drive down to Key West, which is deserving of your time, but there are lots of things to see in the Northern and Middle Keys, too.

We suggest staying at least a night or two in the Northern or Middle Keys and, if you have time on your road trip, both.

4. Spiegel Grove Ship Wreck (about 6 miles offshore from Mile Marker 102)

This massive Navy ship sits about 6 miles from the shore of Key Largo and is one of the top dive sites in the Florida Keys.

In 2002, it was intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef and home for marine life. At the time of the sinking, the 512 ft ship was the largest ship ever to be intentionally sunk for use as an artificial reef for scuba diving. It is a must for divers visiting the Florida Keys.

5. Cruise on the Africa Queen (Mile Marker 100)

Movie buffs will surely want to pull over to take a scenic ride through the canals of Key Largo aboard the ship from the movie, The African Queen .

Featured in the 1951 movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, this boat was built in 1912 and worked in East Africa building railroads before it became a star.

6. Mile 88 Beach & MM88 Tiki Bar (Mile Marker 88)

Soak in the tiki vibes at Plantation Key’s Mile Marker 88 Beach and Bar. With an unobstructed view to the west, this is also a great spot for sunset and a few sundowners.

If you want to hit some of the best Florida Keys bars , make sure to pull off at Mile Marker 88!

7. Rain Barrel Artisan’s Village & Lobster Statue (Mile Marker 86)

This road trip stop in the Florida Keys is easy to spot, with a statue of a giant lobster named Betsy sitting out front.

Many people stop for a selfie with the lobster and then realize there is a fun artist village here as well.

8. Islamorada Sandbar Island Party (Near Mile Marker 84)

The sandbar located right offshore from Islamorada is the perfect place to spend an afternoon in the Florida Keys!

You’ll find boats parked here just about every day, but on Sundays – this is the place to be.

On the weekends’ hundreds of boats gather for an informal party in the crystal clear waist-deep water! You can charter a boat of the day and enjoy this unique local party.

9. History of Diving Museum (Mile Marker 83)

Whether you are a diving enthusiast or not, the history of Diving Museum should be a part of anyone’s Key West road trip itinerary.

Inside, there is a fascinating collection of diving equipment dating back hundreds of years – and YES, you can even put on an old-school diving helmet!

10. Islamorada Beer Company (Mile Marker 82)

You can’t miss the bright yellow building that make up Islamorada Beer Company and their adjoining distillery. Pull up a seat at the bar and grab a flight of tasty beers from the long list of brews.

Their IPAs were pretty solid, and it was fun to try some of the beers that included regional ingredients and local flare.

11. cheeca lodge & spa (near mile marker 82).

After a long day of driving, nothing works out the kinks like a good massage. Here at Cheeca Lodge , they have one of the best spas in the Florida Keys.

Indulge in a massage on your way to Key West and make time to have lunch at the Atlantic Edge restaurant on the property, with great views of the sea.

12. Florida Keys Brewing Company (Mile Marker 81.5)

You don’t have to go very far between stops on a road trip from Miami to Key West to find fun places to grab a drink.

Also, one in Islamorada is the Florida Keys Brewing Company, which is one of the top breweries in the area. Their bottle cap tiled beer garden and taproom are surely worth pulling over for in your voyage down the Keys.

13. Feed the Tarpon at Robbie’s Restaurant (Mile Marker 77) – One of the Best Stops

One of our favorite stops on our Florida Keys road trip was Robbie’s Restaurant. Where else in the world can you have a 5-foot-long fish jump out of the water to grab a fish from your hand?

Robbie’s is famous for its terrapin feeding, which started after trying to nurse an injured fish back to health. You can buy a bucket of “fish food” to feed the terrapin, but just be careful. These fish are always hungry!

They also make some great food. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We have eaten all three meals here. This is a must-visit stop for us every time we drive to Key West. The food is really good value for the price.

14. Dolphin Research Center (Mile Marker 59)

The Dolphin Research Center provides a forever home for animals that have been recused and rehabilitated but can’t be released back into the wild.

The research center was established in 1984 by Jayne & Armando Rodriguez as a non-profit to provide a habitat for dolphins and educational experiences for visitors.

15. Turtle Hospital (Mile Marker 48.5)

The Turtle Hospital started helping everyone’s favorite sea creatures back in 1986. Since then, they have rehabbed and released more than 1,500 turtles back into the water surrounding the Florida Keys.

On your road trip in the Keys, you can stop in and see the turtles that are currently being treated on one of their 90-minute tours that start on the hour from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily.

16. Seven Mile Bridge (Mile Marker 47-40)

One of the most impressive bridges you’ll ever drive across is located on the west end of Marathon in the Middle Keys.

As the name implies, this bridge spans seven miles across the sea, and in some spots, it’s so long and straight you can’t see the end of it.

Here, you’ll also find a walking bridge that was once a railway – it spans this stretch, too. However, in 2019, it’s under construction and not open the entire length.

For some really good views of the Seven Mile Bridge, head to Sunset Grille & Raw Bar in Marathon. This is one of the best restaurants in Marathon and our favorite place to watch the sunset in Marathon.

17. Bahia Honda State Park (Mile Marker 37)

When putting together your Key West drive map, make sure to save an hour or part of the day to explore Bahia Honda State Park. This state park is one of the best state parks in the Florida Keys.

Bahia Honda State Park has some of the best beaches in the Florida Keys. The entire state park is over 500 acres and offers great snorkeling opportunities.

Head to the concession stand for snacks, kayak rentals, and information on their snorkeling tour to Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary. Bahia Honda State Park is less than half an hour’s drive from Marathon.

If you’re driving from Miami to Key West in an RV or campervan, there are three campgrounds at Bahia Honda State Park with a total of 80 campsites.

There are even three cabin rentals at Bahia Honda State Park, but your car must be able to go under the Bahia Honda Bridge with a max height of 6 feet 8 inches.

Reservations for camping at Bahia Honda State Park and cabins are in high demand. Reservations can be made 11 months in advance.

18. No Name Pub (Near Mile Marker 30)

This pub with no name is worth the short detour off of the Overseas Highway near the key that shares the “No Name” name. This place is full of kitsch, with the walls and ceilings covered in dollar bills.

It’s one of those old-time places that they just don’t make anymore. If this sounds like your kind of place, be sure to build it into your road trip itinerary for a drink or a bite to eat.

Renting a Car in Florida

Some people drive their own car from their hometown all the way to Key Wet. Some people rent a car in Miami and drive from Miami to Key West. Some people rent a car in Key West and drive to Miami.

We have taken several Florida road trips driving from Wisconsin down to Key West. We also rented a car in Miami and then started our Key West drive from there, and then flew home from Key West. There is no right or wrong way.

We use this car rental company when renting a car in Florida. They have the best prices, free cancelation, and no hidden costs.

We have found that it is best to fly into Miami, rent a car in Miami , drive from Miami to Key West, and fly home from Key West.

If time is not a problem, it is cheaper to return the rental car to Miami, and flights from Miami are almost always cheaper than flying out of Key West airport.

Chef Michaels

Chef Michaels is one of the best upscale restaurants in the Upper Keys. If you can get a reservation, we highly recommend it. They are known for their fresh seafood and steaks at Chef Michales.

Hungry Tarpon Restaurant

The Hungry Tarpon Restaurant is located at the famous Robbies of Islamorada for feeding the tarpon. It’s a great place to grab a bite to eat or drink before or after feeding the tarpon.

We stopped in for breakfast. Portions are large, the food is tasty, and it’s a great value.

The Lower Keys

As you make your way further south, the Keys become less populated and more natural until you get to the final few islands, like Key West.

While there may not be as many pull-offs with signposts, there are still many natural places to explore in this more rugged and wild stretch of the Florida Keys.

Keep your eye out for nice beaches like Bahia Honda and many places to put a kayak in the water.

Best Things to Do in Key West on a Road Trip

Once you reach Key West, you’ll have enough things to do to fill a few days and then some.

We compiled a Key West itinerary and compiled a shortlist of our favorite things to do in Key West to help you make the most of your next road trip.

Sunset Sail in Key West

One of the best things to do after a journey down the Florida Keys is to sit back and let someone else do the driving or sailing rather aborad a sunset catamaran cruise.

We sailed on this sunset sail with a full bar and live music with Sebago Watersports , and we highly recommend them. Sit back, enjoy a nice cold beverage, and watch sun set over the Gulf of Mexico.

Explore Duval Street at Night (and Day)

Duval Street is to Key West, as Bourbon Street is to New Orleans. While only slightly tamer (certain festivals excluded), Duval Street has a reputation for great Key West nightlife .

Just about any night of the year, you can find great live music, fun, and entertainment. The weekends are when the real parties are, while regional visitors are also coming down to partake in the parties.

If it is your first time in Key West, we suggest joining this Key West Pub Crawl . It will give you the lay of the land and include five drinks, and you’ll probably make a few friends to join you out later that night.

However, this doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to see on Duval Street while the sun is out. This historic street is home to a number of great art galleries, shops, and attractions – plus, you’re on vacation, and the bars are open during the day too!

Kayaking with Lazy Dog

We went on this Key West Mangrove Kaying tour with Lazy Dog . In our opinion, it was one of our favorite tours in Key West.

Grab a paddle and head out into the mangroves kayaking. You can rent kayaks here or take a guided kayak tour, which will bring you to the beautiful backwaters of Key West.

On one of their tours, you’ll paddle through mangrove creeks with blueish-green water, at some points only a few inches deep.

You’ll have a chance to spot all sorts of wildlife above and below the surface. Nurse sharks, jellyfish, and sea birds are frequently seen while kayaking in the lower keys. As a bonus, on some tours, you can even bring your dog!

Hemingway House

The world-renowned author Ernest Hemingway called Key West home for most of the 1930s. During his time in the Keys, his most successful books were published.

While in Key West, you can visit the home he shared with his wife of the time, Pauline. The Hemingways no longer live here, but descendants of Hemmingway’s 6-toed cats can still be found in the house and garden.

You can join this Hemingway Food and Walking tour . It starts outside the Hemingway House (it does not go inside the house, so you’ll have to do that on your own).

The tour follows in Hemingway’s footsteps, giving you a glimpse of his life and the history of Key West.

Stop in for a Drink at Sloppy Joe’s

A Key West trip would not be complete without a stop at Sloppy Joe’s! It is always busy, but the service is good and efficient.

It was made famous by one of Key West’s most memorable residents, Ernest Hemmingway, who frequented the bar and allegedly had a hand in naming the place.

Today, you won’t find Hemmingway, but you will find a big, open, lively bar with live music and food.

However, if you visit in July, you might see Hemmingway or at least a really good doppelganger at the annual Hemmingway Lookalike contest held at Sloppy Joe’s.

If you join the Hemingway Food and Walking tour , you will visit Sloppy Joe’s, as it is an important stop.

They are also super child friendly. On our second Key West trip, our son was one, and on our last trip to Key West, we had a three-year-old and one-year-old!

Another Key West travel tip – Sloppy Joe’s serves really good virgin drinks! I was pregnant on our first Key West road trip, and it was a nice, tasty surprise to see on their menu.

Key Lime Pie at Kermit’s

While every storefront from Mile Marker 118 to the furthest piers in Key West all claim to have the best Key Lime Pie , Kermit’s is the real deal.

Don’t miss this Key West institution on your Key West road trip! For a mid-day snack, be sure to grab a chocolate-dipped frozen slice of Key Lime pie on a stick. YES – it’s as good as it sounds.

Smathers Beach

This deep sandy beach located on the southern shoreline of Key West is arguably the best beach on the island .

Despite its stunning white sand, it’s not bursting at the seams with visitors. During most times of the year, you’ll have no problem finding a spot to lay your beach towel.

Southernmost Point Marker

This painted concrete buoy is a popular photo spot that marks the piece of land furthest south in the Continental United States. From here, it’s said only to be a short 90 miles to Cuba.

Snapping a selfie at the Southernmost Point Marker is a must on a Florida Keys road trip. A little Key West travel tip – go early!

The line to get your photo gets super long. If you go before 9 a.m., there are very few tourists waiting. This way, you can take a few photos.

This spot here ceremoniously marks the end of your Miami to Key West drive. This is the end of the road – Mile Marker Zero.

There are two signs, one on each side of the road – one for the end of the road and one for the beginning.

We suggest joining this guided bicycle tour of Old Town Key West , as it visits several of the stops on this list and more, including Mile Marker Zero.

Romantic Dinner at Latitudes on Sunset Key

Finish off any good road trip in style with dinner at Latitudes, voted one of the most romantic dinner spots in the country.

If you want a table at Latitudes for sunset, you need to make reservations as soon as you start planning your road trip.

Dinner tables are booked months in advance. If you have less time, you can also dine here for lunch, but you won’t get the full effect without the sunset, but still some great food.

There’s no shortage of great food in Key West. We were really surprised at all the good food we had while visiting – we didn’t have a plate that we weren’t impressed with.

In a city full of top-notch restaurants, it can be hard to pick where to go. Make sure to indulge in some fresh fish too. Here are some of our favorite places with the best seafood in Key West.

Cafe Marquesa

Our favorite meal in Key West was at Cafe Marquesa. We enjoyed everything we had. Their menu often changes as everything is fresh. We highly recommend the shrimp & grits appetizer and beignets as a dessert.

The restaurant is one of Zagat’s highest-rated restaurants in Key West. The chef, Graham Dailey, has been on Iron Chef and trained under Anthony Bourdain. If you are putting together a Key West map with foodie destinations, Cafe Marquesa should be on it.

Matt’s Stock Island

If you love brunch, you have to go to Matt’s Stock Island for their Sunday brunch. Every Sunday from 10:30 am – 2 pm includes three buffets (including a raw bar), unlimited small plates, and bottomless Bloody Marys & Mimosas.

We dined for dinner one evening as we weren’t in town on a Sunday morning. We started our meal with the crab beignets and scallops & bacon, and each got today’s catch blackened. Make sure to save room for dessert too. The Tahitian Vanilla Ice Cream Sammich is where it’s at!

Kermit Key Lime Pie shop

In addition to the pies, Kermit’s is a local’s favorite lunch spot. On the menu are nice wraps and awesome fries for reasonable prices.

Of course, save room for pie because leaving without trying a slice of Key Lime Pie would be a sin!

Latitudes at Sunset Key

If you only have one splurge meal, it should probably be Latitudes out on Sunset Key, and it should be dinner at sunset. If you are looking for one of the best waterfront restaurants in Key West this is it!

As the name of the island suggests, the sunsets here are pretty amazing and make for a special night. Make your reservations well in advance.

Cuban Coffee Queen

Start your day off right with a cup of classic Cuban coffee. This tasty little shop has two locations, one downtown and another by the waterfront.

In addition to coffee, the Cuban Coffee Queen serves up smoothies, Cuban-inspired sandwiches, breakfast favorites, and even desserts. Don’t miss the giant Key West postcard painted on the side of their waterfront location.

Once you are out of Miami and by Homestead/Florida City, traffic isn’t an issue. If you leave Miami before 8 a.m., there is a Starbucks in Florida City that you will be driving right by if you need some caffeine. It is about an hour’s drive from Miami to Florida City.

Q:) When is Hurricane Season in Key West and the Florida Keys?

A:) Technically, the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 and ends November 30 every year.

Typically, hurricanes in Key West and the Florida Keys are more common from mid-August until mid-October. Remember, Florida is the hurricane capital of the United States.

Detectives find connections in crimes in orange, osceola, and seminole counties.

MIAMI – Investigators knew someone used a lamp fixture to hide 3 kilos of cocaine, and mailed the lamp from Puerto Rico to Osceola County. This helped them during an ongoing investigation into two murders in Central Florida.

A 2002 forest green Acura, the only one in Florida, and rare 10mm rounds fired at both crime scenes connected the two murders, according to Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma .
