Food is consistently good though a bit pricey,. Atmosphere is lively with a good mix of customers. Service can be a bit rushed ... and chaotic (asking how everything tastes before anyone takes first bite). Drinks are pricey unless it is on the happy hourmenu. Check the bill, I've been charged full price at times. Edit: had a great lunch yesterday, Julia made sure everything wasperfect and didn't make us feel rushed. Read more

Server Ali was great. Food took a long time to get served though - he said there was a delay at the steak station, after about ... 50 mins of waiting. He did offer dessert on the house but we were too full and not really keen on the desserts. Had the 4mushrooms steak. Asparagus was tough, steak, which I'd asked for medium, was more medium-well (ie overcooked), but the mashedpotato was good. Drank a Fros?, which is basically frozen ros?, I thought, which was ok. Sis ordered the crispy tofu bowl, whichcame with rice. Was too spicy for her. If she'd been told it was spicy I don't think she'd have ordered it. Niece had the friedchicken strips. It was ok. She had to swap with me sis cos the tofu was too spicy. The avocado and kale salad was ok though Ithought not enough avocado. The chick peas were deep fried and drenched with curry powder, which I thought unique butweird. Overall I would say it's so-so. Read more

It’s Happy Hour in Kelowna! Where to go according to a local foodie

Happy hour in Kelowna is in high demand. We all want to spend less without sacrificing quality, taste and atmosphere. At these places you can find all that all while supporting local. We do not include chains in our articles because we are passionate about supporting local. For every dollar spent at a locally owned location 70 cents is spent within that community.

Our philosophy: Why suggest a chain when we feel their menus do not reflect the time nor place you are living/visiting? Their menus are typically the same wherever they pop up. You know what you’re getting when you choose a chain, and while they have their place, we do not feel it necessary to include them on our website. But if you’re looking for chains…Here’s a hot tip, all chains in town offer a happy hour from 2-5 if you haven’t figured that out by now.

Best Locations for Happy Hour in Kelowna From a Local

Micro bar & bites – daily 3-6pm.

Part of the RauDZ family (RauDZ, Sunny’s, The Okanagan Table), Micro Bar opened as a place to hang out while you wait for your table to become available next door at RauDZ. Now, with its industrial chic vibe, it is one of my favourite places to go with a date or a friend and grab a few unique tapas places, expertly crafted cocktails or a local glass of wine. It’s the place to go for happy hour in Kelowna so expect a line.

Friends of Dorothy – Daily 4-6 pm

Kelowna’s first LGBTQ2+ friendly bar featuring drag shows from brunch to late night. Everyone is welcome and everything will want to go with a great cocktail list (try the No Place Like Home ), charcuterie and the brunch menu is for for foodies.

Orchard Room – Daily 4-6 pm and 9-close + Sunday 1/2 off Oysters & wine

A small menu but it delivers on taste and price. $4 for sleeves of beer, janky tacos, chicharrones, tequila and pickleback shots. One of the most overlooked locations in Kelowna, probably because it changes yearly since the pandemic struck. It is still finding its footing but I consider it one of the most Instagrammable locations in Kelowna , especially since the disparaged Ricco Bambino closed. The old radio and cabinetry hangs from the ceiling creating an innovative liquor cabinet that will be sure to inspire copycats. A great happy hour in Kelowna you’ll want to add to your itinerary.

Jack’s – Daily at 5 pm

Coinciding with their daily listening party, the Happy Hour at Jack’s is limited to 3 drink options; $10 cocktails, $6 draft beers and $5 Rémy tea shots. But you get great music and a lively atmosphere. One album is played from start to finish. A dark bar with images of album covers adorning every square inch of the walls. Food is meant to be shared with smaller plates offered.

The Office Brewery – Daily 12-3pm

This brewery is one of my favourites for its brews, cocktail flights and food. You can’t go wrong with the wings, tacos and a spicy whipped feta dip. Cocktails, cocktail flights and rotating seasonal tap makes this a go to which is high praise as it hasn’t been open for long. Must stop! Check out our other favourite breweries for food and beer. Happy hour in Kelowna has never been more tasty!

Social 242 – Daily 5-7 pm

A solid choice for drinks and food before a night out at any of the clubs. There’s something for everyone including a dedicated vegan menu.

Skinny Duke’s – Tuesday to Sunday 5-6 pm

It’s a trip when you hang out at Skinny Duke’s. All the decor was the rage in the 70s. Go there with your parents and they’ll be pointing out all the items that appeared in their childhood home; ceramic black panthers, tv trays, orange recliners, shaggy carpeting, and plenty more top to bottom. Take advantage of the happy hour because dining or drinking at Skinny Duke’s is an experience.

Runaways Bar & Lounge – Daily 3-6 pm

Formerly the Mission Tap House, and depending on who you ask it’s the P&Q for those who go back far enough, you’ll find 20% off all share plates and drink specials at this neighbourhood favourite. Live music and comedy shows are a staple with their new stage.

Shoreline Brewing – Monday to Thursday 3-5 pm + added savings with the Kelowna Foodie Card

Shoreline Brewing is one of two Mission neighbourhood breweries BUT is the only brewery with a view of the Okanagan Lake and Gyro Beach. It’s a popular patio in the summer months and a family favourite for trivia nights. Excellent beer and food in a vibrant dining room with white and teal colours with clean lines.

kelowna foodie card and halifax foodie card

Central Kitchen – Monday to Friday 2-5 pm

A local favourite and the word is out. You’ll usually find a line up out the door at this small bar and restaurant attached on to the Central Sports Club. You can take in a game of floor hockey then grab a beer. Both food and drinks are included in happy hour and I cannot recommend the Mr Tea enough!!

Hotel Eldorado – Monday to Sunday 3-5 pm

You’ll definitely want to take advantage of the happy hour at the Hotel Eldorado. It’s known as a pricey place. You’re paying for the view and the atmosphere of a historic boutique hotel built by an European Empress who built it as a place to welcome her European friends with a bit of luxe. The original burnt down so this is a replica but the charm in the lower Mission remains. One of the few dining rooms and bars located on the Okanagan Lake. It’s a go to for special occasions or for a fancy date night out. I love to go to the bar during the holiday season, the warm wood tones and bar staff willing to make you anything to make you happy.

Oak + Cru – Monday to Sunday 3-5 pm

Located in the Delta Grand Hotel but is a surprising hit amongst the locals. The brunch is solid and their patio during any season is a coveted seat. Summertime waterfront seating or wintertime dome dining is in high demand.

West Coast Grill – Daily 3-6 pm

Located in the lobby of the Prestige Hotel, this seafood restaurant is one of the few in town. Oysters, halibut, pasta dishes and surf & turf are all found here.

Creekside Pub & Grill – Sundays all day

A neighbourhood pub popular with cops, old timers and anyone looking for a piece of Kelowna before it became so busy and so expensive. Cozy and friendly atmosphere, this is a great place for karaoke nights, trivia or to take in a game.

The Train Station Pub – Monday to Sunday 3-5 pm

The Train Station is located in a renovated 1926 train station and has a large patio, great family friendly atmosphere with a pub vibe. The food and drink menu during happy hour is well stocked for anyone looking to save extra bucks without sacrificing on selection.

Midtown Station – Monday to Saturday 2-5 pm

Owned by the same people behind the Train Station Pub, Midtown is tucked in the Landmark District and supplies happy hour customers with a good selection of food and drink but with a more upscale vibe. A large screen and projector play sports events and festive movies in the fall and winter months.

Frankie We Salute You – Tuesday to Sunday 3-5 pm + added savings with the Kelowna Foodie Card

A plant based menu that will convert any carnivore , FWSY is serving the tastiest food in Kelowna no matter your dietary restriction. Chickpea fries, sweet corn queso and an Aperol Spritz makes me a happy hour devotee of FWSY! Also try any and all the tacos available on their seasonal menus. Truly delicious. Added bonus – Use your Kelowna Foodie Card to get 50% any bottle of wine during happy hour. Exclusive to Foodie Card holders only.

Gulfstream – Daily 4-6 pm

The perfect location if you are staying at the Four Points by the Kelowna Airport. Solid food and drink options at reasonable prices in a modern yet cozy bar or the dining room.

Kettle Valley Public on Main Bar & Grill – Sunday all day

In this Kettle Valley neighbourhood you’ll find this neighbourhood pub with a friendly atmosphere because everyone here are neighbours. I used to live in the neighbourhood and go for the killer burgers, waffle fries and a local sip.

Review: Minnesota Yacht Club festival ends in rowdy, dopey style with Chili Peppers

A fter a rather meaningful and mellower start on Friday , the Minnesota Yacht Club festival turned more dopey, sweaty, goofy, brawny and wild on Saturday.

For better or worse, Twin Cities music lovers finally got a taste of what major rock festivals are all about.

The highly anticipated, nationally touted inaugural festival continued Saturday on St. Paul's Harriet Island Park with a lineup led by the maybe ultimate '90s party band, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who played the same site in 1992 on the second Lollapalooza tour with their famous bassist dressed solely in a diaper.

Flea and his bandmates have cleaned up since then but haven't grown up much. Their rowdy, back-slappy, semi-tawdry spirit seemed to waft through Saturday's festival like the semi-legalized marijuana smoke that was prominent throughout the 10-hour day.

There was way more weed, bouncing beach balls, backward ball caps and mosh pits on Saturday for performers, including the Offspring, Gary Clark Jr., the Hold Steady and Soul Asylum — quite a contrast to Friday's more sophisticated (and less virile) lineup with Alanis Morissette, Gwen Stefani and Joan Jett. There were about a thousand more people, too, as attendance topped out at 35,000.

It really was a tale of two festivals over the two days. The Yacht Club vibe was so festive and kooky on Saturday, even the Offspring came off like a halfway decent band. Yes, two long days in the sun can really mess with people's heads.

Here's a rundown of Saturday's defining moments:

The Minnesotans sure were smart-alecky. "I arrived to the gig in my yacht," Soul Asylum frontman Dave Pirner said near the start of his band's midafternoon set on the main stage. Lots more yachting quips followed. And then there was Hippo Campus singer Jake Luppen's hello to the crowd: "Thank you for coming. We're the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Both bands got down to serious business when they weren't talking between songs, though, each blending in new songs from albums out this fall alongside older radio hits. Soul Asylum also dropped in a few deeper-cut oldies for the hometown fans alongside "Runaway Train," including "Little Too Clean" and "Bittersweetheart." Hippo Campus had many fans twice the age of its typical crowd singing and clapping along to its most buoyant tunes, including "Way It Goes" and "South."

St. Paul finally got its due from two of the bands. Hippo Campus guitarist Nathan Stocker got on the mic to express their gratitude for the city and specifically the St. Paul Conservatory for the Performing Arts, which he and his bandmates attended and could see from the stage.

The Hold Steady's Edina-reared bandleader Craig Finn could also see the source of many of his songs from the second stage: the Mississippi River. He sang about it in "Stevie Nix" and then paid homage to the smaller Twin City in his still-thrilling band's mellower jam, "We Can Get Together," which he introduced by saying, "Minneapolis is hard to rhyme with, so thank you St. Paul. You have it all."

Finn also had fun with the festival's nautical theme, which tied into his wardrobe choice for the day: a dapper, gentlemanly light-blue suit he bought for the Kentucky Derby: "I'd like to thank them for calling this the Minnesota Yacht Club so I could wear this suit again," he said.

The Chili Peppers' set wasn't the funkiest of the fest. New Orleans' funk and soul band Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue — something of an odd entry in the rock-heavy lineup — went over like a beignet goes with a hangover on the second stage in the afternoon heat. Their hyper-grooving set included fun originals blended with snippets of New Orleans classics like Ernie K-Doe's "Here Come the Girls" and even Green Day's "Brain Stew," all of which they seamlessly and tirelessly mixed together nonstop like a good DJ mixes on two turntables. The real show-stopping moment came when they jubilantly covered Prince's "Let's Go Crazy." Even with all the Minnesota acts on Saturday's bill, there was no better act to honor Minnesota's big chief.

Gary Clark Jr. went against the vibe. While he's put on many shows in town that would've delighted Saturday's crowd, the Texas blues-rocker instead filled the day's penultimate set with a lot of the hazier and more soulful, Curtis Mayfield-tinged tunes from his new record, "JPEG Raw." It was an impressive divergence but was somewhat lost on the crowd. At least until he launched into the older and heavier jam "Bright Lights," and things indeed brightened.

The Chili Peppers were mildly hot. Any fan who caught the Los Angeles rock vets' concert last year at U.S. Bank Stadium was probably overjoyed seeing them outside with excellent acoustics. However, they probably did not appreciate that this set list leaned more heavily on recent tunes, even while 2022′s slow-builder "Eddie" reiterated how great it is having John Frusciante back on guitar.

Appreciation for the improved setting and sound seemed to carry over on the band's end, too. Flea, the band's sometimes-aloof singer Anthony Kiedis and its St. Paul-born drummer Chad Smith good-naturedly and excitedly bounced their way through the 90-minute set and didn't waver as they began to check off some of their many hits later in the last half-hour, starting with "Californication" and then picking up steam with "By the Way" and "Give It Away."

"We're really happy that you're here, and we love to play music for you," Flea said as sweetly as could be at one point.

OK, maybe the dude has grown up. It certainly felt like the Twin Cities grew up as a concert market by the end of the Yacht Club on Saturday, when the festival appeared to run even more smoothly and impressively than Friday, despite a bigger and more ruffian crowd. Here's to next year's voyage.
