American Sail Information

American Sail got its start in 1976 with the purchase of the Aqua Cat catamaran that has now been in production over 42 years and was recently inducted into the National Sailboat Hall of Fame. Our specialty for over twenty-five years has been making fun family sailboats from 8 to 18 feet. Over the years we have grown to offer many more sailboats in our line including a larger version of the Aqua Cat, the Dink line of tenders, and four daysailers that are the Aqua Finn, Pennant, American 14.6 and American 18 Daysailer. 

The photo to the right is that of an American 18 Daysailer which an ideal small sailboat for those who are looking towards a roomy and comfortable daysailer which also has the added benefit of being designed for speed and performance. Incorporated features include a self-bailing cockpit along with a molded in drink cooler storage areas and three storage compartments, along with a kick-up rudder and centerboard and adjustable jib tracks. Furthermore the package includes Harken hardware and all stainless steel rigging.

This boat is in perfect conditionThe Renkin 18 was a hugely popular sailboat and if you are familiar with the Tangerine this is probably the nicest one you'll find available! Why? Because this boat has been in storage in a dry garage since 1994 with the sails were tucked away in a nylon sail bag. When we pulled it out of storage this year the only issue was the tires on the trailer. This boat is a 1975 Custom Flex Interlake sailboat. The boat is complete as far as I can tell and includes the mast, boom, rudder, tiller, main and foresail and a Pamco trailer. I am the third owner of this boat, I have not sailed it but the previous owner was sailing the boat in 2013. The hull needs some fiberglass work done where the centerboard pocket is on the hull, and the floor has delaminated. The sails, rudder, mast and boom are in good condition. The tiller is in working condition but should be replaced.The Pamco trailer is in excellent condition and only needs tires and paint. I would probably replace the wooden guides also. The boat has a title, the trailer is registered. Local pickup only. Delivery might be arranged depending upon distance. No returns unless item not as described.

This is Hull #1, 1961, Windjammer 21's from California, designed by Morgan Embrogan and built in Southern California back in the 60's and early 70's by various commercial builders. There were at least 15 built and I have a gaff-rigged, topsail cutter. This Windjammer sailed to Hawaii and back from California twice and to Alaska and back to CA. boats have very easily folded masts, even under sail, fit into US containers (24). The Windjammer 21 will sleep 4 in separate bunks and is very comfortable under way and in the slip. With quadrant centerboard up it draw 18 inches and weight empty is 2500#. It has always been great in the Channel Islands because it cuts over the kelp and because it is so light we used to tie off to the kelp (don't shoot me) to keep from carrying 600' feet of line and extra chain necessary to normal anchor around the islands. Boat is in Charleston, SC now on a trailer. Steel trailer has 4 new tires, wheels, bearings, recently pulled from Florida. 6 bags of sails, all rigging, outboard in a well, boat is ready to sail but could use some TLC, paint, varnish, etc. Photo of Black hull boat is a sistership. Small sailboats are our specialty! We've made fun family sailboats for over 40 years.

American Sail got its start over 40 years ago in 1976 with the purchase of the Aqua Cat catamaran.  Over the years we have grown to offer many more sailboats in our line including a larger version of the Aqua Cat and four daysailers that are the Aqua Finn Daysailer, Pennant Daysailer, American 14.6,  and American 18 Daysailer.

If you're looking for the best small sailboats you've come to the right place.  All of our family daysailers are designed for fun and not hard-core racing. Any of our boats can be rigged by one person in under 20 minutes.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
