/yät/ /räk/ noun
In the musical sense, yacht rock refers to the highly polished brand of soft rock that emanated from Southern California between 1976 and 1984. The term is meant to suggest the kind of smooth, mellow music that early yuppies likely enjoyed while sipping champagne on their yachts.
Significant "yacht rockers" include Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Steely Dan, Toto and many more.
Home of your ultimate guilty pleasures. Presenting Boat House Row; a Yacht Rock experience like no other. Bringing you the silky sounds of soft rock from the late 70s and early 80s.

Philly's Boat House Row brings 'yacht rock' to Irwin's Lamp Theatre
Put on your Sperrys and Ray-Bans and sail away to the smooth sounds of yacht rock.
Boat House Row will cruise from Philadelphia to The Lamp Theatre in Irwin for a show at 8 p.m. April 15, celebrating the soft rock that filled the airwaves in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
“Yacht rock” comes from an eponymous 2005 internet series that parodied the genre through the lives of some fictional soft rock stars of the era.
Boat House Row plays the hits from artists who embodied the term, like Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Steely Dan and Toto. Others commonly associated with the name include The Doobie Brothers, The Eagles, Robbie Dupree, Fleetwood Mac and Rupert Holmes.
“Most of the band is in their 40s, so we grew up with this music, hearing our parents play it,” said Brian Anderson, who sings and plays piano with Boat House Row. “It was ingrained in us from when we were kids, so nostalgia is definitely a huge element of this, for sure.”
The band’s favorite yacht rock group is one possibly lesser-known to listeners.
“By far our favorite is one of those bands that doesn’t quite jump off the page by just the name, but when you hear the songs, you know them,” Anderson said. “That’s the band Ambrosia.”
The Los Angeles-based band had hits like “How Much I Feel,” “Biggest Part of Me” and “You’re the Only Woman.”
“They were great at pushing the boundaries of R&B and jazz into a more mainstream deal, like a lot of these artists do — great melodies and great harmonies that just fit us.”
Anderson notes that yacht rock has burgeoned in popularity in recent years, with Sirius radio and music streaming services dedicating stations to it.
“We were always fans of this music anyway, so the fact that it was now more commercially viable was exciting for us,” he said.
Clothing and attitudes
The band has been playing the soothing sounds of the ‘70s for about five years.
The core members are coming up on 20 years together in September, the majority of that time in the alternative pop band, Fooling April.
“It’s like April Fools, but Fooling April,” Anderson said. “We were an original band going back into our 20s. We had some moderate success and toured the U.S. for a while, but then life settles down as you get into your 40s and 50s. We had kids and families, so it led us to this music.”
The six members of Boat House Row all perform under stage names. Anderson’s is Kenny Trout.
“There’s kind of a formula to the names, whether it’s your pet’s name and the street you grew up on or something along those lines,” he said. “It’s just something that’s fun. Kenneth is my middle name and Trout is the street I grew up on.
“We bring in the clothing and the attitudes (of the era) and things like that. It’s kind of inherent in the way the founders created the genre and the tone they had when they did it,” Anderson said. “The music itself is taken very seriously, even though we don’t take ourselves too seriously.”
Boat House Row has played from Boston to southern Virginia and as far west as Ohio. This will be their first show at The Lamp, although they’ve been nearby in Pittsburgh at the Hard Rock Cafe and Club Cafe.
“When the pandemic hit, we were really just a year or two into this, so we took that opportunity to go online and stream, not just for the band’s sake but for our own sanity,” Anderson said. “For the band and the connection to the fan base, it was tremendous. We really built an audience out of those streams, and that really translates now into people coming out to the shows.”
They’ve also been invited to play cruises with some of the artists they cover.
“It absolutely seems like the natural progression,” Anderson said. “It just hasn’t worked out from a scheduling standpoint yet, because it’s such a long commitment.”
Group members are not among the yacht set themselves, he added. The name is “just the perfect link between the genre and our hometown.”
The name derives from Philadelphia’s Boathouse Row, a historic site on the east bank of the Schuylkill River with 15 boathouses housing social and rowing clubs dating back to 1860.
Tickets to the show at The Lamp are $28. To reserve, call 724-367-4000 or visit lamptheatre.org .

Proposed $40 million marina in Northeast Philadelphia aims to be a catalyst for more waterfront development
A $40 million proposal to build a new marina in Northeast Philly may soon lead to the demolition of the Quaker City Yacht Club building, part of an effort to spark revitalization along the Delaware River waterfront.
It’s part of a plan by Dana and Ron Russikoff, who in April spent $1.15 million on a 6-acre parcel that includes the yacht club at 7101 N. Delaware Ave. The couple, who are avid boaters and the founders of SureShade, a company that makes retractable shades for boats, want to build a marina to entice more boaters to the area.
“A lot of the Philadelphia boaters are taking their dollars down to Chesapeake, down to the Jersey Shore where there is more for boaters to do,” Dana Russikoff said. “We’re hoping to start a trend that reverses that. We’re hoping to be a catalyst for more waterfront development.”
They estimate the project could cost $30 million to $40 million and plan to raise public and private funds. The property is in a qualified federal opportunity zone, which provides tax breaks to investors, said Dana Russikoff.
Early plans include several restaurants, a pool, around 200 boat slips, boat storage, and fuel for boats. The Quaker City Yacht Club’s building does not have a historical designation, though the club was founded in 1887. The structure would be demolished to build a four-story building and an adjacent building for boat storage on the property. The club would be a tenant and have space within the planned four-story building, said Dana Russikoff.
The development will be called One River Marina, and the first phase will consist of building out the in-water portion of the complex, which includes boat slips, a fuel dock, and dry-rack storage. The plan is to have that “completed or very close to completion” in time for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026 when the city is expected to see a significant influx of tourists. A timeline for the rest of the project was not available yet.
“We have this beautiful river, we have so many boaters out on it, and there really isn’t anywhere for them to dock and dine, to be able to pull up in their boat and have a bite to eat with a nice view,” she said.
In addition to local boaters, the Russikoffs hope to attract customers from out of state, she said. They also hope people in nearby neighborhoods might visit the marina for the restaurants and pool.
There haven’t been many new amenities for local boaters in recent years, Dana Russikoff noted, but in 2017 public docks opened in Bristol , which have attracted more people to the area.
“They’re getting out-of-state boaters coming up the river now to enjoy their Main Street. It really helped revitalize the town,” said Dana Russikoff. “We’re hoping the same — that by building One River Marina right there in the historic Tacony neighborhood that it is a catalyst for redevelopment in those neighborhoods as well.”

Very nice Harbor!! Lots of Boats and Yachts docked in the harbor. The paved trail around the harbor is part of the Bay Trail that goes all over the Bay Area. This place is really clean, and on sunny days you can see Brooks Island really well. Easy parking if you drive here, and if/when I get me a Yacht, I'll be rolling through here like a boss!!!

Charged me for 4 months when I was there 2 months. Claimed I never gave notice when I did 3 times in writing, once by phone, and once in person. Will never use any Safe Harbor Marina again
Nice place to launch boat any time of the day and night, low or high tide. Facilities are always clean and cost is really reasonable
This is a great place to get all kinds of different exercise. You can take a nice slow walk at a leisurely pace, put in a good run or break out the sweat with a nice ride. The paved trail section has become quite long and you can experience everything from stunningly beautiful sunrises and sunsets to playground parks for the kiddies to quiet spaces to cast for fish to having a picnic (geese frequent the area though so you MUST have a blanket you don't care about or risk goose poo stains in your clothes) to running your dog. Just be cautious and respectful to others when passing, and help everyone enjoy this gem. Parking is plentiful in various areas and safety doesn't *seem* to be a huge issue with so many other people right nearby. Have a great time at Marina Bay, we sure do.
They keep raising rates, yet the docks keep getting worse. Sound more like profit taking rather than customer satisfaction.
Pros: * Nice people in the harbor * Good security Cons: * Filthy Canadian Goose runway results in large amounts of bird s#!t all over the boat. * Lots of "marginal" boats.
Myself and my girlfriend along with our 2 greyhounds live aboard here on a 50' ketch. This Marina was a plan b for us because we wanted to be in Sausalito but after being here for a while and talking to folks who've had their boats all over the bay, we realize how lucky we are to be here. The marina is kept very clean and has some of the nicest bathrooms of ANY Marina I've ever been in. Also, access to the docks is controlled by fob so I don't worry about security. The staff and harbormaster are as nice as they come. I highly recommend MBYH!
Checked this place out with a friend a couple of weeks ago. It was my first time here, but from initial reaction, I can tell you this place was very friendly. I had a lot of questions, and the staff answered all of them. They were very knowledgeable and even showed me around a bit. They had wi fi, laundry, even showers. They helped me out without any hesitation. The location is great too, and the sailing school is right around the corner. The location is also prime, and I have yet to voice any concerns nor do I have anything bad to say about the very friendly, professional, and honest service I've received. Thanks Marina Bay Yacht Harbor!
I have been in this area for a half-dozen years, including keeping a boat in the Marina. The management and staff do a good job of keeping the facility up, and balancing between decent tenants and marginal types, and being proactive about future issues. I love it here! This is the undiscovered jewel of the Bay, and we all consider ourselves citizens of the Point! There are a few distinct social communities of very friendly people oriented around their home docks (D, E, and F) as well as a stable group on-shore in the property developments. Having Salute and Amini's nearby, as well as the cluster of business near CVS really helps with a sense of community.
Problems with stray currents off green wire. Staff not educated or have understanding of finding or mitigating problem. Galvanic isolator is a must! This is a Hot Marina! I've measured up to 80 Milliamps! Second problem is book keeping. Make sure you keep your receipts when paying slip fees! It's common for them to put Liens on boats eventhough everything is paid up.
Great Marina, very clean and great group of other boaters. The staff in the office seem to be very helpful and are great to work with. However, Marina is hot. would not recommend your boat being left plugged in because of green wire strays, unless you have a galvanic isolator. At my location, stray current shore power averages between 70mA and 80mA If you have a steel boat, I would not recommend this marina.

Music | bay area and california add jobs in april — but the gains are puny, music | this bay area band was ‘yacht rock’ way before ‘yacht rock’ was a thing, pablo cruise brings its soft-rock hits to guild theatre.
For Bay Area band Pablo Cruise , however, the connection to the genre has been longer — and more literal — than for most.
“Our headquarters was an 82-foot schooner in the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon,” says Cory Lerios, who co-founded Pablo Cruise in 1973. “So, we were definitely yacht rockers back before yacht rock was a term.”
From that base, the band has delivered some defining gems in what is now known as the yacht rock genre, which celebrates the smooth a.m. radio staples of the ‘70s and early ‘80s delivered by such artists as Toto, Nicolette Larson, Poco and the Little River Band.
Most notably, Pablo Cruise was responsible for the meticulously produced soft-rock numbers “Whatcha Gonna Do?” and “Love Will Find a Way,” both of which were Top 10 hits and rank as first-tier yacht rock staples.
Those songs — which sound as good today as they did when they first came out in the late ‘70s — are two of the biggest reasons why fans will turn out to see Pablo Cruise when it performs May 9 at the Guild Theatre in Menlo Park. Showtime is 8 p.m. and tickets are $49, guildtheatre.com . The group also plays May 8 at the Felton Music Hall and May 10 at the Mystic Theatre in Petaluma, pablocruise.com .
The Menlo Park show will be a homecoming for Lerios, who now lives in Thousands Oaks but was born in San Francisco and grew up in nearby Palo Alto. It was on the Peninsula where he began playing piano and joined his first bands in junior high school.
“I never really thought I would make a career of it,” Lerios says of playing music. “But one thing led to another and I kind of never looked back.”
He’d find his first taste of real success as a member of Stoneground, a Concord-based rock act that released a number of albums on the Warner Bros. records label in the 1970s. After a few years, however, Lerios and two other Stoneground members — vocalist-guitarist David Jenkins and drummer Steve Price — would leave the fold and go on to form Pablo Cruise with the help of bassist Bud Cockrell (previously of the Bay Area act It’s a Beautiful Day).
One thing to note from that list of original band members is that none of them are, in fact, named Pablo Cruise. Neither are any other of the current or former members, for that matter. So, it’s probably a good time to pause and clear up the origin of the moniker, which Lerios says has certainly drawn plenty of questions over the years.
“The truth is that it was a nickname of a buddy of mine from Colombia, South America,” he says. “It was just a nickname I gave him — Pablo Cruise. He was a very bright guy, very charismatic. And I just called him Pablo Cruise.”
So, when it came time to name this new post-Stoneground outfit, Lerios remembered his ol’ pal’s nickname and thought it fit in with one of the trends of the era.
“It was kind of at that point where you had Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull — a lot of two names for these bands — and Pablo Cruise just had a great ring to it,” Lerios reckons.
Whatever they called themselves, these four musicians were bound to get discovered at some point — given that they were all great players and wrote memorable tunes. So, not surprisingly, it wasn’t all that long before A&M came knocking and Pablo Cruise was thrilled to sign with such a well-regarded record label.
“A&M was notable for sticking with a band,” Lerios says. “Today, labels barely sign bands. But they don’t support bands like they did a lot of back in the day. They supported tours. They supported the making of the record, the travel — all kinds of things that they don’t do anymore.”
The result was the band’s 1975 eponymous debut, which eeked its way into the Billboard 200 and began setting the foundation for the success that would later come. It didn’t produce any hit singles, but it did give listeners a wonderful 12½-minute instrumental number called “Ocean Breeze” that drew plenty of spins at album oriented radio (AOR) stations.
“If you want to check out some deep Pablo Cruise, you should listen to that — because it’s a phenomenal piece of music,” Lerios says. “And that (song) really got us going. Still, everywhere we play now, people ask to hear ‘Ocean Breeze,’ which is always nice to know that people have gone that deep into the repertoire.”
A second album, titled “Lifeline,” followed in 1976 and managed to hoist the band a bit further up the charts, but Pablo Cruise still lacked that hit to really take it to the next level.
All of that would change with the third album, 1977’s “A Place in the Sun,” although not overnight. In fact, the first single released from that album was “Atlanta June” and it didn’t live up to expectations. Oh, but the B-side was a catchy little number called “Whatcha Gonna Do?”
“(Radio stations) played ‘Atlanta June’ and it got some acclaim, but it didn’t really take off the way they’d hoped,” Lerios remembers. “So, somebody flipped it over and put on ‘Whatcha Gonna Do?’ and, all of sudden, it started to blow up.”
The song slowly climbed the charts, eventually breaking into the top 10. The group then scored a second hit with the album’s terrific title track.
“When it gets to that point, everything changes,” Lerios says. “The phones really start to ring. You are getting offers to be on TV shows. All of a sudden, it’s like you’ve arrived.”
The band quickly followed up that album with another winner, 1978’s “Worlds Away,” which produced three hits – including the slam-dunk single “Love Will Find a Way.”
Both albums, “A Place in the Sun” and “Worlds Away,” would be certified platinum.
That would be the zenith of the band’s career, although it did produce two more albums — 1979’s “Part of the Game” and 1981’s “Reflector” — which still did quite well on the charts. The same could not be said of the band’s last studio record, 1983’s “Out of Our Hands,” which failed to chart as listeners had moved on from Pablo Cruise-style soft rock to other styles of music.
“There was a certain instrumentation, a certain form of writing that was predominant back then,” Lerios says of the a.m. hits of the era. “Then, all of a sudden, like the Knack, Johnny Rotten and all these bands came in and punk rock kind of took over and just squashed soft rock.”
By the mid ‘80s, the band members parted ways.
“Success can change things and as we just evolved in our lives, Dave (Jenkins) and I weren’t hitting it anymore,” Lerios says. “We really weren’t writing a lot. And what we were writing, we didn’t really like – and nobody else seemed to like it either.
“I had other aspirations and I know Dave did. So, we split. We didn’t necessarily break up the band. We just went different directions.”
Lerios managed a really cool second act in Hollywood, scoring films and TV shows. In that realm, his credits include the 1993 Wesley Snipes action flick “Boiling Point,” the awesome 1991 horror epic “Child’s Play 3” and, most famously, “Baywatch.”
Jenkins also experienced a good deal of post-Pablo success, including spending a few years in the country group Southern Pacific and recording with Hawaiian vocalist Kapono Beamer.
About 20 years ago, Lerios and Jenkins decided to give Pablo Cruise another shot and they’ve been peddling the soft rock to eager crowds ever since. Yet, it’s not just the old-school fans who are showing up. Pablo Cruise — which now consists of Lerios, Jenkins, bassist Larry Antonino, drummer Sergio Gonzalez and vocalist Robbie Wyckoff — is also seeing a healthy contingent of younger listeners.
“One of my jokes is that ‘you are too young to be here,’” Lerios says. “Kids come up and say, ‘My parents played this music in the house all the time. I love it. Big fan.’
“You know, music — even though we try to compartmentalize it and try to give it a decade or a whatever – good music is good music.”
