Tenders in a nutshell

A tender is a boat that services a larger vessel (referred to as the mothership ). It can take many forms and deliver a wide range of conveniences.

Historically called ‘ship’s boats, ‘ tenders have supported large vessels for centuries. They have been used for guest transfers, refuge boats, landing crafts, stowed on deck or towed astern—little has changed! 

Whilst the vast majority of tenders employed by smaller yachts are typically rigid inflatable boats, the modern-day superyacht considers a multitude of vessels indispensable.

Hull categories

We’ve been specialising in building boat tenders for over a decade, yet with such a degree of cross-over and with a seemingly endless request for custom configurations, categorising tenders remains a challenge.

Nonetheless, at the top-most level, we categorise all tenders under one of the following three hull types:

Fully Inflatable A lightweight vessel relying solely on inflation for buoyancy. 

Rigid Inflatable A vessel with a hull constructed from rigid materials such as aluminium or fibreglass, supported with an inflatable or foam collar for added buoyancy in high seas. 

Rigid   A fully rigid hull without a buoyancy collar of any type.

What is an open tender?

An open tender is principally a single-deck boat with no enclosed cabin. Chiefly a guest transfer boat with ample seating both forward and aft, open tenders are day boats without accommodation above or below deck.

While we see many open tenders dedicated to guest transfers, by their very nature, they can also incorporate centre console boats, some dive boats, landing crafts, and even limousines.

What is a chase tender?

As the name suggests, a chase tender—which can also be an open tender—follows the mothership.

Chase boats can take on many guises since their main attribute is size. As a result, they are generally not stored on board but instead towed astern.

Often very angular in design, with excellent seaworthiness, chase boats need to be able to withstand the rigours of being towed by the mothership. Whilst a lot of large chase tenders can be operated entirely independently, towing very long distances (such as transatlantic) is not advised.

What is a classic tender?

Tenders with the hallmark of classic design are styled with an exquisite, continuous line from the head to the heel.

Echoing the lacquered freeboards of a Riva Ariston or the flawless veneers of a Hinckley picnic boat, a modern classic from the likes of J Craft or Wajer will feature a gracefully tapered form, avoiding right angles altogether.

What is a foiling tender?

Combining thrust with lift (as an aeroplane does), high-speed tenders have the opportunity also to become airborne.

Less drag, higher speeds and lower energy consumption are the key advantages, although from a guest comfort perspective, being elevated above a big swell scores very highly.

What is a catamaran tender?

Largely associated with utility boats, catamaran tenders (not to be confused with catamaran sailboats) present superyacht owners with a number of major advantages over their mono-hulled counterparts.

Favoured as a utility vessel, a twin-hulled catamaran can be built much wider than an equivalent-length vessel with a mono hull. It offers increased stability and, therefore, a more comfortable ride in bigger seas. Thanks to a smaller surface area, there’s also less drag, which results in faster speeds and higher efficiency.

What is a dive tender?

We build tenders optimised specifically for scuba diving, however, given the range of crossover in the market, the likes of amphibious boats, beachlanders, some centre consoles, landing crafts, open tenders, RIBs and utility boats can also work perfectly well for diving.

Storage, floor space and, most importantly, the convenience of easy access to the water are key attributes of a versatile dive boat tender.

Amphibious Tender

Go where other boats simply wouldn’t dare, landing on shorelines in rough breaks and on rugged terrain. Be sure to do your homework, though, as most beaches and marinas will require permission to stroll out the sea on an amphibious tender.

Beachlander Tender

We are all about time spent on the water, but the sensation of stepping off a tender onto the warm sand is in itself a joy to behold. We don’t mean clambering over the side of a rib and bouncing awkwardly into the shallows. We mean stepping from a dry boat onto dry sand.

Center Console

Synonymous with the Florida Keys, the traditional centre console (or center console in the US), is typically a single-deck boat with the helm in the middle.

Geared towards recreational fishing, the centre console maximises the floor space while, crucially, allowing for full access around all sides of the boat. On smaller boats, seating is often sacrificed for floor space, while larger centre consoles fitted with cabins creep into the Sports Fisher sector.

Not intended to be an especially dry boat, both crew and guests are often exposed to the elements. The upshot is that centre consoles and, more so, sports fishers, tend to offer huge power, which is especially useful for long day trips from the mainland.

High-performance

‘Go-fast’ boats, as the name suggests, are built exclusively for speed. More commonly known as ‘cigarette boats’ due to their shape, go-fast boats are not for the faint-hearted. 

A craze immortalised by the Cigarette Racing Team, modern-day cigar boats can achieve speeds of over 100 knots. Largely impractical as a conventional superyacht tender, the range of high-performance boats have thankfully branched more into Centre Consoles. In turn, this presents superyacht owners with a high-performance chase boat of an almost unimaginable spec.

Landing Craft

A foam or inflatable collar provides extra buoyancy in the event of taking on water, while in the case of RIB boats —which have a high deadrise—also acts as a spray rail for keeping the deck dry. Popular with superyachts, RIBs can be towed or stowed and used for a wide range of purposes.

SOLAS Rescue Tender

In accordance with the International Convention for Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), all ships over 500GT (typically 50m+) must carry at least one fully compliant SOLAS Rescue Vessel (and a complement of life rafts). The rescue vessel must be stowed onboard and cannot be towed astern or located on a support vessel.

SOLAS Rescue Vessels must be able to carry five seated persons and a person lying on a stretcher. They must also have an automatic self-righting capability and the engine must be restartable following a capsize. Stable in a seaway (and deployable when the mothership is doing 5 knots), rescue boats may be either rigid or inflated and need to be operable in water that is 1-30°C. They also need to be able to start in -30°C air temperature.

First adopted in 1914, the SOLAS Convention was initiated as a direct response to the Titanic disaster. The Convention in use today is often referred to as the “SOLAS, 1974, as amended”.

SOLAS Lifeboats

Painted bright orange—or Pantone 144—a lifeboat can have a LOA no less than 7.3m.

Sports Fisher

A close relative of both the Central Console and High-performance categories, a Sports Fisher is a dedicated recreational fishing boat. Despite the wide range of boats within this category, the Flybridge Sports Fisher is the most synonymous with the name. 

Large boats, often up to 25m, the archetypal fisher is perfectly suited to lengthy, deep-sea fishing trips. Typically built with berths, heads, a galley and a tower (perhaps even a live bait tank, too), a Sports Fsher is for serious big game fishing enthusiasts.

It’s quite a commitment for a superyacht when a large open or utility tender with rod holders would probably be just as effective if big game fishing was less of a priority.

Top 10 Luxury Tenders For Superyachts

To begin with, as far as stereotypes go, the typical superyacht tender is a long, slender boat that offers a limousine-style experience. The bench seats and covered tops are designed to carry as many guests as possible while ensuring they arrive at their destinations perfectly coiffed, rather than windblown and covered in salt water. 48 Walytender: An evolution on the 118 Wallypower first introduced in 2002, the 48 Wallytender is the first Wally product to be revealed following the brand’s acquisition by the Ferretti Group. This standalone runabout is intended for day or overnight cruising and features general interior volumes, with an owner’s suite down below. A key exterior feature is the fold-down bulwark sections that increase the swim platform while at anchor.

Described as “the ultimate superyacht chase boat”, the Hawk 38 is available in a number of paint finishes and upholstery meaning that two boats are unlikely to ever be the same.

Designed with three generations in mind, the Sense tender had to be stable and comfortable for the 75-year-old owner while being speedy enough to cater to water sports, such as water skiing. Accessibility to and from the tender was key. It features opening bow access directly to the shore and aft embarkation built to the same height as the swimming platform of Stella di Mare.

Also, keep in mind what the type of storage area for a dinghy on your yacht. If you have a dedicated dinghy garage where it will be out of the way when not in use, you don’t have to worry about getting the maximum size. But if your dinghy storage is on a hydraulic swim step, keep in mind you’ll need enough room to function around the dinghy while it’s aboard.

The electric tender revolution: Meet the models leading the charge

Electric tenders have been a long time coming, but, says Sam Fortescue , these frontrunners are well worth the investment...

Let’s get this out of the way up front. In the blunt words of Ernest Menten at Tenderworks: “You have to accept that an electric tender is going to be slower than an internal combustion engine boat.”

Even a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery supplies just 10 per cent of the power of the same weight of petrol, so electric tenders are more expensive and need frequent charging. And yet they are flying off the shelves, with most manufacturers reporting they have filled build slots for all of this year, next year and even into 2024.

“We have already seen a tenfold increase in the electric boat order books of the current manufacturers compared to this time last year,” says Alex Bamberg, CEO of fast-charging specialist Aqua superPower. “We see that in the next three years, an unstoppable and confident transition will be well under way.”

The attraction is clear. These boats are silent to operate, fumeless and welcome in a growing number of locations – from Norway’s fjords to Amsterdam’s canals – which are closed to polluting craft. “The environmental benefits, noise and vibration mitigation and reduced service requirements make electric particularly suitable for tenders,” adds Audrey Hodgdon of Hodgdon Yachts. The company has adapted its 10.5-metre and 12-metre limo tenders to run on electric power.

Speed vs Range

Technological development has reduced, but not eliminated, a fundamental compromise at the heart of every electric boat: a hull’s drag increases exponentially with speed, so you can either drive fast or drive long – but not both.

“Even with the best lithium-ion batteries on the market, conventional planing boats will not reach more than 20 to 25 nautical miles of range at high speeds, making them inferior to conventional gasoline-powered speedboats in terms of performance,” explains Teodor Hällestrand of electric boatbuilder Candela.

Some say that doesn’t matter. “How often have you sat in a limo tender doing 40 knots?” asks Menten of Tenderworks. “It never happens. Not even when the tender driver is alone! Smaller tenders just don’t get used for extensive driving. They wait idling for hours behind the main yacht and then drive 10 minutes to the shore.”

Candela chose a different solution. In the C-8, a trio of foils lift the hull above the water and allow the drivetrain to achieve 30 knots using just 37kW of power. At a still-impressive 22 knots, it can knock off 50 nautical miles with its single 40kWh battery pack. There is a virtuous circle at work here, because a lighter boat requires smaller motors and smaller batteries, in turn making the boat lighter still. The only complication is garaging a boat with foils – even retractable ones.

Berlin-based startup Voltaire has gone down another path. Its boats have yet to be built, but designer Jonas Hertwig has drawn a twin-hulled tender with razor-fine hulls for minimum drag. Its twin 50kW Deep Blue motors are driven by 85kWh of BMW i3 batteries, giving it a top speed of 20 knots and a respectable range of 100 nautical miles at nine knots. As a kicker, the hull is laminated in sustainable flax-fibre composite.

Standard monohulls need to pack in anything up to 230kWh of battery capacity. “You have to put enough batteries in, but if you put too many in, you actually reduce the range,” says Menten.

There are other weight concerns, too. “With tenders, you’re very much limited by the hoisting capabilities of the motherships,” says Massimo Kovacic, head of engineering at Bremen-based Yachtwerft Meyer, which has designed a number of electric tenders but is yet to build one. “We have had a number of requests, but when we made all the analysis, the clients decided to stick to traditional.”

Fast Pit Stops

So the electric tender is no all-rounder. You won’t be wakeboarding one moment and ferrying guests to a deserted beach with a champagne grill the next. But as a means of luxurious, short-range transport, it is almost perfectly suited, says Audrey Hodgdon. “The operational profile of tenders makes them a great candidate for electric propulsion, with the short ship-to-shore-type trips and the ability to charge both from the mothership and when at shore.”

Until very recently, big battery packs could only be charged overnight using low-power AC from dockside supplies, and the DC systems on board were slow. But, just as in the automotive sector, burgeoning boat demand has spurred rapid development. Batteries at 400v accept more charge than their low-voltage counterparts, and there are already moves towards 800v batteries with better cooling for even faster charging.

Aqua superPower is in the vanguard here. By the time you read this, it will have installed  14 high-powered DC chargers in marinas in Europe and the US, with a further 90 expected in  the next year in key hotspots around Italy and the French Riviera, plus in MDL marinas around  the UK. Often requiring local infrastructure upgrades, these are capable of supplying 125kW to  two plugs simultaneously.

Before any power comes aboard, the boat must complete an electronic handshake that also validates the user’s profile. Only when connected does the plug become live, supplying AC and DC current. Aqua can also replicate this performance with an onboard charging system, creating the prospect of a 60 per cent recharge in the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee.

“Currently the network is in the build-out phase,” says Bamberg. “We know there are very significant boat sales in the sub-15-metre market and these will drive the usage next year in the  leisure and workboat space.”

Dutch yard Tenderworks has also dipped a toe in the electric tender market. Under the codename V-AMP, it has already built two fully custom 14-metre electric tenders for a  client who was focused on setting a positive example.  “As a billionaire you are an opinion leader, so you’d better make your choices count,” says CEO Ernest Menten.

Potentially competing with the Vita Lion, the V-AMP nevertheless features a Vita electric drivetrain, which the two companies collaborated on. All the parameters were meticulously studied, from the shape of the hull and the location of the shafts to the positioning of the batteries. Her naval architecture is completely different, however, with a semi-displacement hull designed for comfort and range. “On the electrical range of the naval architecture, it lifts with little resistance and is flat on the water, but cuts through the water with a sharp bow,” says Menten. “You cut the wave in two at a very early stage and it creates a speed with the least amount of power.”

It means that her top speed is a little lower at 20 knots,  but perfectly sufficient for making comfortable runs between the ship and the shore. “The V-AMP really impressed with her stability when cruising, cutting through the waves in total comfort with nine passengers on board,” says BOAT International ’s Raphaël Montigneaux. “The boat was as if on rails. Even though the technology on board comes from Vita, there is a clear feeling of being on a very different boat, proving that Vita has created a really flexible technology  that’s easily adaptable to various platforms.”

After launching in 2017, Vita Power set about designing a series of electric concept boats, which proved hugely successful in the Yacht Club de Monaco’s Energy Boat Challenge. The new 10.5-metre Lion is the first production dayboat, built by JFA Yachts, and incorporating many lessons learned over four years. “Built in carbon, the fit-out of the boat is neat,” says Montigneaux, who tested the boat first-hand. “We see here the experience of the superyacht builder. Her layout is very classic, with large sunpads aft followed by a cockpit with seven seats to cruise comfortably.” The cockpit converts into a U-shaped dining area, and a little cabin forward offers a double bed and a dayhead. “I especially liked the beautiful work done to link the deck and bathing platform,” he says. “Linked to this pure design, the use of white throughout reinforces the feeling that they are pollution-free.” All the control systems have been developed by Vita and are managed through two large touchscreen displays at the helm.

And the feel of the boat? Well, it was rather different. “We left the port of Saint-Tropez in complete silence. At the beginning, it gives the feeling that something is missing. But after a few minutes you start to really enjoy it.” Montigneaux never reached the boat’s top speed of 35 knots because of restrictions in the bay, but the Lion quickly settled into its cruising stride of 22 knots. Despite the confused, choppy seas that often prevail here, the ride was dry and comfortable. This is not a lightweight boat, packing an industry-leading 233kWh of battery power – this alone amounts to well over a tonne. But it gives the boat 90 minutes of operation at 22 knots, and Vita CEO Rory Trahair says that the boat recharges in less than an hour using Aqua superPower’s new fast-charging stations.

Every Watt Counts

In the quest for efficiency, lossless motors and slippery hull design take on giant importance, because just a few percentage points’ improvement adds another mile to the range.

On the propulsion side, some boatbuilders have gone back to basics to develop the most efficient motors, propellers and gearboxes. “With internal combustion vessels, the tendency is to just add more power rather than improving efficiency of the hull form or build,” says Rory Trahair of electric drivetrain integrator Vita.  “We have to balance all of the above, and have designed our hulls around the particularities of an electric power train.”

With its foiling boat, Candela quickly realised that it couldn’t simply rely on electric outboard technology. It created the C-POD, whose  two contra-rotating propellers are much more efficient than a single prop, while the direct drive reduces friction to a minimum. The result delivers 23 per cent more range than the best electric outboards.

In the quest to strip away every surplus kilogram from the hull, carbon fibre is usually the material of choice. “To accommodate enough batteries to ensure efficient propulsion, you must make the boat as light as possible, so you need to use the latest composite technology and techniques,” says Henry Ward of launch builder Cockwells. Of course, carbon raises its own problems because it has a much bigger carbon footprint than GRP. Care is also needed, as lighter boats can be more uncomfortable in any kind of seas.

You must also optimise hull shape and balance for an electric drivetrain. “Just shoving an electric motor into a boat doesn’t make it an electric yacht,” says Ernest Menten of Tenderworks. “If you don’t have the appropriate naval architecture, you’ll have so much resistance that your batteries will go flat very quickly. It is a whole discipline of naval architecture and hull design – a combination of elements makes it work.”

This is a problem whose solution has so far eluded some RIB makers – particularly those using jet drives, as the ubiquitous Williams  Jet Tenders builder admits. “We have spent the last three years developing various prototypes and system studies,” says the brand’s Ollie Taylor. “The big stumbling block is the battery. Due to the jet pump and hull design of our existing tenders, the running time would be very, very low, and recharge time on board would be very high.”

RS Electric, a newcomer with a name familiar to those in the RIB-racing world, claims to have cracked the problem with its more utilitarian boats. Naval architecture was the biggest challenge, according to CEO Jon Partridge. “The RIB needed to have an ultra-efficient running surface that could smoothly transition from displacement to planing mode; too much displacement would be inefficient at high speeds, and too little displacement would be inefficient at slow speeds.”

The result is the Pulse 63, with a 23-knot top speed courtesy of its RAD 40 electric drive and 46kWh of high-voltage batteries. Even at  10 knots it manages a very decent 70 nautical miles. Uniquely, RS has gone eco on the lay-up, too, with recycled PET foam core, recycled carbon fibre and sustainable flax-fibre.

Truly eco or greenwashing?

Aqua superPower’s onshore network is supplied by renewable energy, but on the mothership it’s an entirely different matter. The tender charging station typically draws power from the yacht’s generators, which invariably run on polluting diesel. So do electric tenders simply displace emissions from the small boat to the big?

Not so, according to many in the industry. “Excess energy generated by the mothership can be used to charge the tenders, thus avoiding that energy going to waste,” says Rory Trahair of Vita. “Tenders largely operate during the day and will often require charging at night when the loads on the mothership are lower. This energy can be optimised.”

That may well be the case with older yachts. Their generators are inefficient unless they operate at optimum RPM, so there is effectively free energy to be had during moments of light load. But many modern yachts use hybrid technology, where battery banks mop up any excess electricity then switch off the generator.

“If the power requirements of an electric tender can be factored into the power-generating systems of the mothership to optimise and reduce wastage, then the electric tender serves as an additional use of that energy,” adds Trahair.

Truly renewable energy is restricted to giant sailing yachts such as Black Pearl and Ethereal, which can generate totally renewable electricity as they sail. Lürssen is one of several boatbuilders also spearheading the use of cleaner hydrogen fuel cells to cover hotel loads.

But perhaps the last word should go to Henry Ward of Cockwells, builder of those achingly beautiful wooden launches. “In reality, you won’t save the world with your electric tender,” he tells me candidly. “But you will enjoy a much more pleasant experience in your limousine.”

You will need a dinghy that can carry your shopping, heavier boat equipment, or suitcases, and yet you will still want it to be light enough to row in the (pretty likely!) event that your outboard fails on you.

The best tenders for yachts have to fulfill a whole range of criteria and will partly be dictated by your own personal needs.  We’ve done a lot of research into this topic after some bad experiences, so here’s everything we found out about the perfect tender for a yacht.

Features Of The Best Tenders For Yachts

The best tenders for yachts have certain features in common, regardless of your intended usage.  Considering these factors will help you make the best choice when it comes to choosing a tender for your sailboat.

No matter your intended cruising, you’re going to want a tender that is going to last.  There is nothing worse than spending a fortune on something that only lasts a year, leaving you with another expensive bill and the hassle and inconvenience of sourcing something new.

Choose wisely now, and you should be able to find a dinghy that will stand the test of time and requires little maintenance—always a bonus when you live on a boat!

Consider your choice of materials carefully, thinking about things like UV exposure, and whether you intend on using the tender for harbour runs only, or whether you’ll need a hull you can drag up stony beaches.

No matter how big your sailboat or how strong your crew, saving weight is always a priority.  If you are looking for a tender for a boat with davits then you might be able to opt for something slightly heavier, but if you’re after a dinghy for a smaller sailboat then you’ll want something easy to stow on deck or even down below.

Lighter tenders are easier to pull up the beach as well, so consider how you intend on using your dinghy before you splash out.

You might not need your tender to win any races but consider how well it will perform in rougher seas or going long distances.  You want a tender for your yacht that can withstand being caught out in bad weather.

You might also want to think about how well your tender can be rowed, as we all know how unreliable outboards can be!

Although you probably won’t be spending huge amounts of time in your tender, it’s still important to have something practical for your needs. 

If you plan to have small children in your tender, consider how comfortable and safe it will be in choppy seas.  

If you know you’ll be motoring for longer periods of time, do you want your tender to have sun protection?  Do you need a locker to stow essentials?  Do you need space for luggage and shopping?  Will you want proper seats in your tender?

Different Types of Tenders for Your Yacht

These days there is a huge choice of tenders out there, so you’ll have to take a while to consider which kind will best suit your needs.  Everyone has an opinion about the best kind of tender for a cruising sailboat.  Ultimately it comes down to what you intend to use your tender for and what kind of sailboat you have.

We’ve summarised the options for you below to help you make an informed decision!

Rigid Inflatable Boats

Rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) are probably the type of tender for sailboats that you’ll see most commonly when you’re out on the water.  They are not to be confused with soft inflatable boats (detailed below).

The hard hull of a RIB makes it much more hard-wearing and durable.  You can drag them up the beach or hit the bottom without fear of deflating them, and they are much more stable in choppy seas.  They often have some inbuilt storage space and designated seating.

The downside of RIB tenders is that they are much heavier than soft inflatable boats, making them harder to launch or pull ashore.  They are also considerably more expensive.

As you’d assume, there are tonnes of designs out there, from fancy in-built steering RIBs to those with different shaped hulls for different purposes, and RIBs made from different materials.  What you choose will be determined by purpose and price.

Soft Inflatable Tenders for sailboats

Soft inflatable boats (SIBs) are fully inflatable and therefore fully deflatable!  This makes them an attractive option for people with smaller sailboats with little room to stow away a tender, or sailors that want to minimise weight. 

SIBs are also a lot cheaper than any other tender option, so they are a great choice for anyone who doesn’t sail regularly or uses their tender for short trips.

Some downsides to having a SIB as your yacht tender is that they are much less durable than other options.  The soft flooring means you need to be more careful about grounding, and they are prone to flipping at high speeds.  They are less comfortable than RIBs as they sit much closer to the water.

Solid dingies

Fully solid dinghies are far less common, but you do see them.  They come in a range of different materials such as fiberglass, plastic, and wood.

The advantages to having a hard tender are that most are easier to maintain yourself and therefore more durable, they tend to be easier to row, and many can be used with sails (see below).  As they tend to be less popular, you can often find good deals on second-hand solid dinghies.

However, they are less popular for a reason.  They tend to be less stable (depending on hull shape), and there’s a certain amount of skill involved in using them.  They are much harder to stow and are often heavier than alternative options.  You will also need to consider the fact that they can bash up against hulls and make sure they are fendered up accordingly.

Sailing tenders

These seem like a great idea, and we’ve often been tempted ourselves, but they do come with all the downsides listed above.  The great thing about being able to sail your tender is that you could save a lot on fuel, but as we tend to row a lot anyway the trade-off of having more things to maintain has never felt worth it.  They look like a lot of fun though!

Alternative options

Some cruisers rely purely on canoes or paddleboards to reach the shore, and while this certainly is cheaper, it isn’t always practical. 

We love having the option of using our kayak to reach shore on a calm day, but we would never trust it in big seas or high winds.  We could end up stuck on shore away from our sailboat, or even worse, get into trouble trying to get back.

Unless you are really experienced and know you can be safe out on the water in big seas and winds, then stick to something you can power up more effectively!

How to Pick the Right Tender for Your Yacht

Here are some questions to consider before choosing the best tender for your yacht.  These factors are personal and will differ from person to person, so you might want to spend some time considering your own needs before splashing out on a potentially expensive bit of kit for your boat!

What will you use your tender for?

The use of your tender will have a knock-on effect on the decisions you make about the right one for you.  Make sure you consider things like:

• Where you plan on sailing (this will affect material choice)
• How many passengers you’ll need to carry
• The distances you’ll be travelling
• How often you’ll use a tender (frequency of sails, time spent at anchor)
• The types of trips you’ll make.  For example, heading off on a day-long diving trip will require a lot more ‘luggage’, and you might want to consider sun protection
• How you will stow your tender while underway
• Where you will dock your tender

What’s your budget?

Another big consideration when choosing the right tender for you is the cost.  You can buy super expensive tenders that come with all the bells and whistles, or you can find cheaper tenders that will serve a purpose for now.  Your budget will help determine what kind of tender to opt for.

The size of your yacht

If you don’t have room for a larger dinghy, then it doesn’t matter how many guests you want to take to shore.  You’re going to be constrained to a certain size and weight.  Inflatable tenders might be the best option for people looking to maximise storage space on their yacht.

Getting The Most From Your Sailboat Tender

We’ve put together some top tips for helping you to get the most from your new tender.

Tender painters for the best tenders for yachts

Here’s a top tip so you don’t end up in the same situation as us!  Equip your new tender with two painters.  One painter for your tender is not enough!

When towing your dinghy, or even just securing it to your boat in a windy anchorage, two painters will ensure you don’t lose your dinghy if a line snaps or a knot works loose.

All things davits

We’ve heard so many stories of davit failures leading to lost dinghies in rough weather.  Make sure you have diagonal straps on your tender to stop it swinging side to side, and make sure those straps are strong!

You should also always leave the plug open on your tender when it’s up on davits.  That way, if waves splash into the tender, it will still drain and won’t put extra strain on the davits.

Oh outboards

Unfortunately, you’re also going to need a reliable way to power your dinghy, especially if you plan on using it for anything other than short trips to shore.  Outboards are notoriously unreliable, and our experience with them has been the same as most others we talk to—a complete pain in the bottom!

Sadly though, you’re almost certainly going to need one.  We’ll cover outboards in a separate article, but here is a brief summary of your options:

Consider how much power you really need.  Outboards with greater horsepower will give you the ability to go faster and farther but are also more expensive and heavier.  Water-cooled engines tend to be quieter than the air-cooled kind.

You can choose from four-stroke and two-stroke engines.  Four-stroke engines are kinder to the environment, and you can’t buy two-stroke engines anymore here in Europe, so if you’re after a two-stroke you will have to find one second-hand.

The other option is to go electric.  We are desperate for an electric outboard , so if we decide to splash out then we’ll let you know how we get on!  If anyone reading this has experience with an electric outboard we would love to hear your opinions—and recommendations!—below. 

The downside to electric outboards is the price.  There is also some debate about whether they are capable of going long distances yet, with some suggesting that the technology isn’t quite there yet.

Dinghy chaps for the best tenders for yachts

Dinghy chaps are the fabric covers you see on the PVC tubes of a tender.  If you plan to use your yacht tender in tropical climates, then you’re going to want to protect it from the UV rays that will quickly cause PVC to degrade.

Dinghy chaps will also help to protect your tender from scrapes and cuts above the rub rail, as can so often happen when you’re climbing out against a rough town quay or harbour wall. You can make your own dinghy chaps if you’re handy with a sewing machine, or you can get them custom made.  Just make sure you use a durable fabric like Sunbrella to give them maximum protection!

Essential Gear for the Best Tenders for Yachts

Oars: In our opinion, oars are an essential bit of kit for your dinghy.  We use our oars all the time for shorter trips to shore, or for squeezing into fishing bays where a mess of mooring lines present a risk of being caught in the outboard.  

We’ve also had to row on several occasions when the outboard has (predictably) stopped working.

Life jackets:  Just as when you’re out on the water sailing, life jackets are an important piece of gear for your yacht tender too.  It’s all too common for accidents to happen out on the water, and a life jacket is a vital bit of life-saving kit that you shouldn’t be without.

Anchor:   We’ve had several different types of anchor for our dinghy over the years and found we liked the oversized Delta style best, but that was for anchoring in sand where we could really dig it in.  

Crab claw anchors that fold away tend to be the most popular choice of dinghy anchors, as you can stow them away easily.  We haven’t had much luck with ours as we find it hard to set and a little unreliable!

Navigation lights: Every country has slightly different regulations when it comes to navigation lights for a tender.  Our advice would be to make sure you always check the country you’re using your tender in, and have at least an all-round white light everywhere you go as a matter of safety.  

We heard a horrible story about someone navigating just a short distance without one, so we make sure we always have an all-round white light visible even when we’re only required to use torchlight.

Water pump/bailer: This isn’t necessary but it’s so useful !  Seaspray or rainwater can quickly leave a nice puddle of water in the dinghy, so having something on hand to keep it dry is always a bonus!

Other useful tender gear: If you have a locker in your dinghy, you might also want to consider carrying a dry bag or two, a torch, a multitool, a spare kill cord key for the outboard, and a handheld VHF .

LAUNCHED: Perini Navi MY 25m Eco-tender

Perini Navi’s first motor yacht launch since the company’s rebranding, and its first ever planing motoryacht, the Eco-tender is effectively a mini superyacht tailored to the requests of her experienced Perini Navi owners.

The project grew out of initial discussions with the owners for a bigger sailing boat. It emerged that the owners were very happy with their existing 50m Perini Navi sailing yacht, but their needs had evolved over the years and what they really wanted was not a bigger boat, but more flexible cabin space to accommodate single guests or children. As they prefer to anchor offshore, they also wanted to explore closer inshore in something more substantial than a conventional RIB.

The answer was a vessel with the same graceful looks, quality feel and luxurious comfort as the mother ship that could provide additional cabin space and be able to operate independently as an extension of the sailing yacht.

“ The classic exterior styling of the Eco-tender shares the same family feeling as Perini Navi’s historic sailing fleet, right down to the dark blue hull and red load line,” says Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of Perini Navi . “But it is clearly no ordinary tender and represents a new breed of super-tender with amenities and technologies to match. As a boat designed and built with a yacht mentality that mirrors all the high-quality hallmarks of Perini Navi, this cutting-edge tender breaks new ground as the brand continues to refine its product range to meet the evolving demands of the market.”

4-mode hybrid propulsion

The innovations start with a sophisticated hybrid propulsion system developed by Siemens, which provides four operational modes for maximum flexibility:

• Diesel mode : twin MAN diesel engines (2x1213kW) power two Hamilton waterjets for a maximum speed in excess of 30 knots.
• Hybrid mode : one engine drives its neighbouring waterjet and also serves as a generator for an e-motor to power the other waterjet.
• Diesel-electric mode : a 130kW generator supplies electricity for two e-motors to drive the waterjets.
• Zero-emission mode : for completely silent and emissions-free manoeuvring or limited cruising, a battery bank can power both waterjets via the e-motors at around 8 knots for up to a hour.

In battery mode, for example, the tender will be able to cruise at low speed in marine parks or other environmentally sensitive areas with no emissions and no noise. But on request of the owner , close attention has been paid to minimising noise in all propulsion modes and contractual sound levels are below 55dB throughout.

“ This is the first time such an avant-garde hybrid system has been installed on a superyacht tender,” says Luca Boldrini, Sales Director – Motor yachts at Perini Navi. “The initial impetus came from the tech-savvy owners who wanted a vessel that impacted on the environment as little as possible, but the know-how we bring away from the project will be carried through into the future.”

Advanced navigation and communications

Unique on a yacht of her size is the I-Bridge ® Multitouch navigation system by Team Italia. All the onboard systems, including the hybrid propulsion, can be managed using the high-res 4K touch screens, trackball and jogger. The monitors can be raised to different heights in cockpit or navigation mode, and include an augmented reality function that overlaps navigation data with video images.

Moreover, an Anchor Watching System (AWS) system can display and control all the equipment necessary for monitoring the boat at anchor. In fact, it provides a 360° image around the boat and tracking of traffic using the radar systems, thermal camera or search light, and can be programmed to sound a proximity alarm.

Equipped with a double VSAT system for internet connection and three Iridium telephones, the Eco-tender can remain connected to the mother ship at over 100 Mbps even when tens of miles distant.

Functional and flexible design

Another request of the owners was that guests should be able to board or disembark from the tender easily and safely from the deck of the mother ship. The high hull bulwarks mean that guests can literally step across from one deck to the other.

The innovations continue with the exterior layout and on-deck amenities. In addition to the comfy aft cockpit fitted with lounge seating, sunpads and a fixed swim platform, there is spacious dinette sunk into the foredeck that further serves as a viewing area from where the owner can pursue his hobby of nature photography.

The fresh and contemporary interior, also designed in-house, is based on brushed teak and white lacquered joinery, and features a full dinette-salon and galley on main deck. Below deck, there is a full-beam VIP suite, a double cabin forward and a third cabin with twin single beds, all with en-suite bathrooms. A crew cabin with independent access is located forward of the engine room bulkhead.

The Eco-tender and her sophisticated propulsion system will undergo thorough testing and sea trails before delivery to the owner in April.

Simultaneously, the hull of the SY 42m E-volution has touched the water for the first time in Perini Navi’s shipyard in Tuzla, Istanbul, and will reach the Viareggio shipyard in a couple of weeks.
