Virgin Islands: Marinas & Anchorage Sites

The Virgin Islands is considered one of the finest sailing grounds in the world. The location offers sunny weather, dependable trade winds, beautiful scenery, protected anchorages and short passages between islands. From local pleasure boat owners to those who enjoy cruising on their yachts through the Virgin Islands, there is unanimous agreement that the Virgin Islands are a boater’s dream come true.

Tip: VHF channel 16 is monitored by marinas and used in the USVI.

Clearance & Immigration

Vessels entering the US Virgin Islands should proceed directly to a port of entry for clearance. Passengers and crew are not allowed to go ashore until properly cleared. All passengers must present themselves and their documents to US Customs and Border Protection. For clearance it is necessary to present not only documentation of nationality for each passenger but also the ship’s documents, identification for all crew members and clearance from the last port of call. Penalties are given per passenger for those that do not have documentation and per ship for failure to clear.

Marinas in the Virgin Islands

There are marinas on St. Thomas and St. Croix with facilities to accommodate long term regulars, transients, mega-yachts and live-aboards. St. John and Water Island do not have any marinas. There are designated anchorage sites and moorings around all four islands. Both St. Thomas and St. Croix have active yacht clubs.

Below you will find a list of marinas and areas designated for anchoring and mooring. Brief information is presented for each marina. Please contact the marinas directly for; prices, closest customs and immigration offices, arrival procedures, reservations, marina rules and other specific information.

Marinas on St. Thomas

(All marinas listed below have water and electricity. Restaurants and shops are either on the premises or nearby.)

Tip: All facilities can do repairs except; Fish Hawk Marina that caters mostly to local sport fishermen and Sapphire Beach Marina where minor repairs can be done.

Marinas on St. Croix

Tip: St. Croix Marina offers full boatyard facility for repairs.

Mooring and Anchoring Areas in the Virgin Islands

Regulations on Short Term Anchoring: Anchoring in the USVI is allowed in any bay or harbor for up to 14 cumulative days, within a six (6) month period, in any one location. After 14 days you can move to another bay or harbor and the regulation of short term anchoring is reapplied. You can also apply for a long-term anchoring permit from the division of environmental enforcement (DPNR) for anchoring in a designated long-term anchoring area for a duration of one (1) month. Any questions or concerns feel free to contact DPNR at 340-773-5774 on STX or 340-774-3320 on STT/STJ.

National Park

There are restrictions on vessels traveling through and anchoring in National Park waters around St. John and St. Croix. Please contact the National Park Service for details on their regulations; (340) 776-6201 for St. John and (340) 773-1460 for St. Croix.

The Friends of the National Park organization have set up about 210 moorings in National Park waters around St. John in an effort to protect coral reefs and marine habitats from damage caused by anchors.

Other Moorings

The Reef Ecology Foundation of St. Thomas and St. John have set up 45 moorings for public use. This organization was set up to help protect coral reefs around the islands. The moorings set up by the Reef Ecology Foundation use special easy-to-see blue striped buoys. Use is free but restricted to boats under 60′ long. The sites include; Thatch Cay, Grass Cay, Congo Cay, Carvel Rock, Great St. James, Little St. James, Cow and Calf, Capella Island, Flat Cay and Saba Island for St. Thomas/St. John and Long Reef, Salt River, Cane Bay, Davis Bay and Annaly Bay on St. Croix. Cruising & Mooring Permits

There are no required cruising permits in USVI waters. If a vessel remains in the USVI for 6 months or more the vessel must be registered with the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR).

Mooring permits are not required for any public moorings or National Park moorings and day use is free. Public moorings are not intended for overnight use and the National Park has a fee for night use. Mooring permits are issued to an owner of a registered vessel. In order to obtain a permit for anchoring or mooring an applicant is required to apply in person, through a resident agent or through any representative duly authorized to complete application procedures in the owner’s behalf. A first time applicant is required to submit with the application a current colored photograph of the vessel and an affidavit executed by the applicant fully setting forth the facts to support the applicants claim of ownership. Listen up y'all cause this shits LIT!! If you decide to rent a catamaran, it needs to be with my new friend, Ryan. The day starts whenever you get your booty to the marina, the sooner you get there, the more fun you will have. Ryan and his right hand-man or (assistant pirate), Lydia, have all the snacks, drinks and fun on the boat that you could need. They have a snack tray waiting for you and a cooler or more full of beer. He took us to not one, but TWO different beaches. (Name a better captain than that). We snorkeled our hearts out and saw fishes, turtles, coral anddddd a BARRACUDA. They had a delicious lunch and drinks waiting for us when we needed a break. FRESH AF chicken Caesar salad and rum punches! Also, if you have chatty dads like we do, Ryan will keep them entertained while you gossip, tan, and have photo shoots at the front of the boat with Lydia! Pro tip: bring zinc sun screen. You think you won't tan through it, but you tots will! If you do not book this, you will leave the trip feeling like something is missing from your trip. Have a great day, or not. The choice is yours!

Snacks we were greeted with

Beautiful Marina location with quality businesses- SELECTIVE security and administrative services left to their own interpretation of enforcement, which solely benefits the AYH/IGY company. Be careful where you park and who you deal with - After many laps around the parking garage, I managed to find a spot marked two hour parking outside (which is utilized daily without penalty by locals- I've personally witnessed this as I've visited AYH many times per week for the past several years). However, today was selectively targeted for a boot by a security employee, who has a well known local reputation regarding his power trip. Said security employee agreed that I was not in the spot for more than two hours, yet he had decided that I had violated parking rules and would be served a $250 fine even though I was right next to the sign that clearly states 2 Hour parking. Upon my visit to the AYH Marina Office, the staff did not verbally agree or disagree with his judgement and quickly was willing to drop the cost (albeit by less than 50%) to get me out of the room after seeing my efforts to document accordingly.

Be advised that if you receive a fine from AYH, you are able to haggle for the price to be reduced (though I do not agree it's not by 100%)

Captain splash is very wonderful he has been doing for years and is very professional his mate Osay was exceptional he did everything from Making rum punch and taking us on a snorkeling adventure I highly recommend this tour. We want to do it every year. Yes

Great place to grab a charter boat for touring the islands! But this review is for CRUISERS. If you are a cruiser looking for a nice marina this is not it. This marina is the worst I've ever seen for cruisers. Why IGY is even associated with this marina is astonishing to me. This marina is great if you need fuel, or want to grab some quick provisions, but that's about it. I think Peter M's review stating there are first-class amenities at this marina is a disservice to those looking to these reviews for assistance on an unknown entity. Here's what I found; -the guys at the fuel dock were very nice and helpful -the office staff was friendly enough -the dock boards are old so take extra precautions to avoid splinters and tripping -we were there for two days and security is very very slack, basically nonexistent, people came and went as they pleased with no one ever asking what boat are you on - which boat are you going to - nothing, so everyone just wanders in and out at free will, they do close a couple of gates at night but the other gate remains open with no attendant, I'm not 100% confident in the response I received of no boat break-ins, I do know at least one office overlooking the docks was broken into recently -the bathrooms are dilapidated and disgusting, there are three or four but they only leave two of them unlocked so you have to wait and wait, they give you a card to get into the bathroom and make a big deal that the little swipe card is $100.00 if you lose it, but seriously they're so nasty and gross don't even bother -if you happen to stay on P dock you'll have the pleasure of walking by a nasty, stinky, leaky, dumpster several times a day, it's got to be a health hazard, but I guess no one really cares - the marina truly has ZERO amenities, there is a great, albeit very expensive, market across the street for provisioning as well as a pharmacy, and other nice shops, there are several good restaurants dock side, and a limited chandlery for boating items you may need, there is a laundromat that isn't associated with the marina, and I found it to be a bit scary with men hanging around the front, these are not MARINA amenities, they just happen to be there -I recommend going to Yacht Haven Grand if you are staying in St Thomas, the security is much better, with a clean bath house, and even a swimming pool - better yet if you can make it to Puerto Rico there are two "first-class" marinas - The Yacht Club in Palmas Del Mar h asAMAZING security and the very best friendly accommodating service, with a pool, and private marina laundry that is closed to the public, plus bath houses that are modern and top-notch clean with an attendant cleaning and servicing them no less five times a day - a must when so many different people are using them, also, the Marina at Puerto Del Rey, Puerto Rico is great with modern up-to-date and clean facilities, private marina laundry, and great security

The marina is home to numerous charter companies, including powerboat rentals, fishing boats, and sailing vessels. Many fishing tournaments are also held out of this marina. American Yacht Harbor is the center of activity in the rapidly growing town of Red Hook. Eight restaurants on the property serve everything from continental breakfast to Seafood and Caribbean cuisine. Duffy's Love Shack is also right across the street. Add a plethora of shops, stores and businesses, plus located on-site or just step away, one can walk to the post office, pharmacy, market, bookstore, bank, and much more -- guests can enjoy easy access to all they may desire in this island paradise.

Beth DiDomenico, the general manager, has the WORST costumer service and is very RACIST. You would think during COVID she would act right with paying costumers but apparently she isn't a professional. 0/10 would not recommend anyone spending their money here.

Great place to keep your Boat. The Staff is super friendly and the Management is very accommodating. Everything you might need is in such A close proximity.

This place is a nice alternative to the hustle and bustle of downtown Charlotte Amalie, with most of the services still in place. American Yacht Harbor is a full-service marina with a phalanx of shops ready to extract dollars from your wallet for the goodies you crave. Because the anchorage is not really protected, it’s probably not appropriate for a long stay.

Easy enough, with no real hazards. The nav buoys are in place for larger boats and the ferries to get in and out. If you have people to pick up, you can make your way into the marina proper, and get a temporary slip (for a fee, radio ahead on VHF 16). If you have extended business to attend to, or want to stay for free, anchor in the outer bay to the south, on most charts as Muller Bay.

Anchoring/Mooring:

Muller Bay is mostly sand with some slab rock and a few coral heads. It appears that all the moorings in this area are private and off limits. Don’t even try to anchor or moor inside the harbor, as all areas are private. Drop the hook as close to the southern shore in Muller Bay as you dare in order to avoid the waves from the east. This place can get rolly, and probably isn’t a great choice for an extended stay when a swell is up, or wind is north of east.

The dinghy dock is on the lee side of E dock, on the far end. Just about everything you could need is ashore at the marina and the surrounding shops. Bars, restaurants, gift shops, ice cream stores, and the excellently stocked (though expensive) Marina Market right across the street. Take some time and walk around.

Don’t Miss:

Cold Stone’s Ice Cream. If you’ve never been, treat yourself to one of the most decadent cold dessert experiences imagineable. They take top grade ice cream then pound, swirl and massage in a variety of saliva-inducing add-ins atop a chilled marble slab. The result is ice cream heaven, and very rich. If you’ve already been I don’t need to sell you on it. You’re already there.
