2023 SailGP at Mina Rashid: How to watch, channel, time, streaming info for the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix

The australians are looking to defend their sailgp dubai title.

gettyimages-1244708759-2.jpg

SailGP has one more event left this year, and fans can tune into CBS Sports Network to catch all the action this weekend. SailGP Dubai will run Dec. 9-10 as the teams continue to battle for positioning on the leaderboard with 2024 around the corner.

Teams will hit Mina Rashid for some fast-paced sailing, and it should be a thrilling event for fans, whether in person or watching from the couch at home. Australia, which sits atop the leaderboard, will look to defend its SailGP Dubai title after winning the event in 2022.

The Australians will have to do that without driver Tom Slingsby, who will be with his wife for the birth of their first child. Former Team USA driver Jimmy Spithill will take Sligbsby's place on the Australian team.

The United States, currently tied with Spain for third in the standings, will try to close the gap on Australia this weekend. To do that, they will also have to inch closer to ROCKWOOL Denmark, which sits just seven points out of first place.

It should be an interesting weekend on the water in Dubai, and here is how fans can catch every second of racing.

How to watch the 2023 Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix

Dubai Offshore Sailing Club (DOSC) to Host the Second Consecutive Annual IRC Middle East Championships  in Dubai

Notice of Race and Registration are live and sailors interested can now register for the race in mid-December

The Dubai Offshore Sailing Club (DOSC) is excited to announce its prestigious role as the host of the annual IRC Middle East Championships. This will be held on the weekend of the 16 th and 17 th of December, 2023.

IRC is the globally-recognised performance rating system which allows keelboats of all shapes and sizes to compete against each other at an equal level.  It is used in many of the most prestigious yacht racing events around the world.

Following the success of the first ever IRC Middle East Championships, held in December 2022 and noted for its spirited competition and sportsmanship, the opportunity to host it again serves as a testament to DOSC's commitment to nurturing a diverse range of sailing talents and promoting an inclusive atmosphere for sailing enthusiasts from various disciplines.

"Whilst the majority of participating boats this year are anticipated to originate from DOSC, we are hopeful that this event will begin to yield an increased regional presence in the IRC fold in the years to come," stated Ed Shiffner, Rear Commodore at DOSC. "By elevating the stature of the IRC Middle East Championships and the IRC rating system, we are working to promote an equal and fair sporting environment where sailing enthusiasts from around the world not only feel welcome to join this friendly regatta, but also other racing events that DOSC hosts throughout the season. The IRC Middle East Championships is the cornerstone of creating a tradition of competitive keelboat sailing excellence in the UAE."

The IRC Middle East Championships, together with the upcoming SB20 World Championships and the 31st edition of the annual Dubai to Muscat Race, demonstrate how Dubai is the centre of modern keelboat sailing within the Gulf region. DOSC plans to develop events such as these in future years to welcome more international sailors from around the world to the UAE’s shores.

DOSC extends a cordial invitation to sailing enthusiasts, supporters, and the community at large to witness and participate in the IRC Middle East Championships. For further details about the IRC Middle East Championships, as well as other sailing events at DOSC, please visit www.dosc.ae or reach out to mailto: [email protected]

Spithill skippers Aussies into lead in SailGP’s Dubai regatta while new-look Team USA is last

FILE - Team USA driver Jimmy Spithill speaks during an interview at the Los Angeles Sail Grand Prix, on Friday, July 21, 2023, at the Port of the Los Angeles. Star skipper Jimmy Spithill said he plans to start a new Italian team following his departure from the United States SailGP team. Spithill said he couldn't disclose any specifics about the USA team other than a new group is bringing in its own CEO and driver, the roles Spithill has held since taking over the U.S. team in the second season of tech tycoon Larry Ellison's global league. Fill-in skipper Jimmy Spithill steered Team Australia’s “Flying Roo” foiling catamaran to finishes of third, first and third Saturday and into the lead of the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix.

The three-time defending SailGP champion Aussies are in position for their first regatta win of Season 4. Despite not having a victory this season, they came into this regatta with a seven-point lead in the season standings of tech tycoon Larry Ellison’s global league.

Spithill is subbing for friend and countryman Tom Slingsby, who is on paternity leave. Spithill left Team USA two weeks ago ahead of the announcement that it had been sold to a private American group whose investors include Alabama linebacker Dallas Turner and actress Issa Rae.

The new-look Team USA, with Taylor Canfield on the helm, had a disappointing debut by going 8-9-9 on the Persian Gulf to sit in last place in the fleet of 10 identical 50-foot wing-sailed catamarans.

Slingsby has skippered the Aussies to victory in three straight season championships, each bringing a $1 million prize. That prize has been increased to $2 million this season.

“It felt great,” Spithill said. “You can definitely see this is a benchmark team in the league. They are a very slick team. I am just trying to get in there and not make too many mistakes. It is a great group and a great atmosphere.”

Spithill rebounded from a rough practice race day Friday, when the Aussies finished eighth.

“I didn’t expect to be leading after how things went in practice,” he said. “I had an absolute shocker and spent a fair bit of time last night going through and getting myself back up to speed again. I felt like we took some good steps today. Tomorrow will be a different day.”

Spithill is best known for steering Ellison’s Oracle Team USA to consecutive America’s Cup victories. He was co-helmsman of Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team, which lost the 2021 America’s Cup match to defending champion Emirates Team New Zealand. He plans to start an Italian SailGP team for Season 5 that will begin following the 37th America’s Cup next October.

After two more fleet races, the top three boats advance to the podium race.

The Aussie crew, full of America’s Cup and Olympic veterans, has 26 points, followed by New Zealand and Canada with 21 and Emirates Great Britain and France with 20 apiece. Team USA has only seven points, one behind Germany, which was disqualified from the second fleet race for trying to barge in at the start.

Spithill had a convincing win in the second fleet race aboard the “Flying Roo,” which has a large gold kangaroo on the wingsail. New Zealander Phil Robertson steered Canada to victory in the first race while Sir Ben Ainslie took advantage of a mistake by the French to win the third race. Robertson signed wing trimmer Paul Campbell-James when he became available after Team USA shuffled its crew lineup.
