Modern daysailers

1. saffier se 33 ud.

Saffier Yachts now has eight designs between 21ft and 37ft. The investment and knowhow the Hennevanger brothers have put into the production facility really shows too – the vacuum-infused builds and finish quality are top class.

Saffier builds seaworthy designs , tests all new models thoroughly in the North Sea and ensures its yachts can be sailed easily single-handedly.

best-daysailer-yachts-Saffier-33-SE

Launched in 2014, the Saffier Se 33 is a sporty design but with a practical self-draining cockpit and optional solid sprayhood, which help it handle most weather conditions. It has a fast underwater shape, a generous sailplan and a fixed carbon bowsprit. The extra-large cockpit features 2m benches and a folding transom and there is space enough for four to sleep below.

Saffier’s brand new Se 27 also looks like a seriously fun design and has been averaging speeds in the mid-teens with the kite up, clocking over 20 knots in its early trials this spring.

Prices for the Se 33 start at €114,500 (ex. VAT).

2. Domani S30

The S30, launched in 2018, is Belgian company Domani’s first model – a trailable sportsboat designed to be comfortable, fast and beautiful, says founder Michael Goddaert.

Inspired by Riva’s Aquarama motor boat , it has a large minimalist cockpit, spacious aft sunbed and a classy-looking compact interior. The narrow-beamed S30 weighs only 1,700kg, is offered with a long, two-part carbon rig, and has an electric drive as standard. A Lounge version is being developed which is similar to the Tofinou 9.7 in terms of deck layout.

Price ex. VAT: €88,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-Black-Pepper-Code-0.1

3. Black Pepper Code 0.1

Those lucky enough to have sailed at Les Voiles de St Tropez may have seen these neo-classic daysailers from chic brand Black Pepper.

As well as this range of Code-branded daysailers/weekenders, the yard has just launched a new Sam Manuard-designed, scow-bowed IMOCA 60 for Armel Tripon’s Vendée Globe campaign.

The original Code 0, by Marc Lombard, is a high-performance dayboat with a distinctive squared coachroof, which is built light in carbon and epoxy with half its displacement in the keel bulb.

A new Code 0.1 version (pictured) launched last year, and is available in Open and Spirit (performance/regatta) versions.

Price ex. VAT: £148,000.

4. A-Yachts A27 / A33

A-Yachts founder. Michael Gilhofer helped to develop the original B30 (pictured below) and was distributor for B-Yachts in Germany for 17 years. He commissioned the in-demand Lorenzo Argento, who formerly worked with Luca Brenta, to design a new range of luxury daysailers built in Slovenia and finished in Austria.

The first two A-Yachts models (the A27 is pictured above) are focused on performance daysailing, whereas B-Yachts has gone for more cruising comfort below. An exciting new model, the A39, is due for launch in 2021.

Prices ex. VAT: A27 €98,500, A33 €215,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-B-Yachts-B30

5. B-Yachts B30 / B34

The Brenta B30 is the iconic Italian daysailer. A real looker to keep berthed at your Portofino residence, it has a lightweight carbon/epoxy build and a high ballast ratio, for tantalising light airs sailing. B-Yachts is the brand that took the daysailing concept to the limit with the fiendishly indulgent (and very white) B60, which we tested, open-mouthed, back in 2008.

Although stagnant for some years, the company was acquired by Luca Brenta’s cousin Alberto Castiglioni in late 2018. Brenta, along with designer Alessia Lee, has worked up the design for a new B34 model due to launch this year, and they are now working on a B40.

The B30 (above) is now a modern classic, with more than 40 built, but the refreshed company has made some upgrades including a new rudder profile, fixed bowsprit, revised deck gear, a more functional interior and the option for an electric engine. But it’s still got those killer lines.

Prices ex. VAT: B30 €118,000, B34 €190,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-Esse-330

6. Esse 330

This is the sixth model from Josef Schuchter’s yard on Lake Zurich, which builds fast, stiff and sporty designs. The new 330 is the first Esse that offers the ability for weekend/overnight sailing. Schuchter told us it is designed more for pleasure sailing than racing but has the same performance as the yard’s 990, using a 1m shorter mast and with greater stability and comfort.

Umberto Felci designed the 330 with a self-tacking jib, a carbon deck-stepped mast with no backstay and a high ballast ratio to help ensure it can easily be sailed short-handed. A lifting keel reduces draught to 1.55m and an electric drive is offered.

Price ex. VAT: €134,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-Flax-27

A plumb stem and square coachroof give an alluring pilot classic style to this Judel/Vrolijk design, but it is the materials from which it is crafted that are most intriguing. Built by Bremen-based Greenboats, the flax (plant) or linen (fibre) is vacuum-infused with bio epoxy and can be given a clearcoat finish to help show off the fibres.

The focus is on weight-saving for this performance daysailer, using recycled PET as the core material. The deck is made from cork, the ropes are made entirely from recycled plastic bottles and the sails are recyclable.

Price ex. VAT, ready to sail: €126,000.

Modern-classic daysailers

8. eagle 38.

The Boersma brothers founded Leonardo Yachts in the northern part of the Netherlands to build top quality gentleman’s daysailers and weekenders.

Its range of gorgeous designs are inspired by the timeless lines and overhangs of the J Class , but with modern appendages.

The new Hoek-designed Eagle 38 is the smallest of a range that now extends to 70ft. It is devised for easy handling, with jib winches in reach of the helmsman/tiller, in a deep self-draining cockpit that can seat six in comfort.

The varnished mahogany interior can sleep three and includes cooking facilities and a neatly hidden toilet.

Price ex. VAT: €177,500.

best-daysailer-yachts-Wallynano-MKII

9. Wally Nano MkII

Wally stunned us with the unveiling of its incomparable Nano in 2009. The Andre Hoek-designed masterpiece certainly elevated the standard of extravagance (and price) for a daysailer. This Wally Nano MkII model released eight years later is a refined version of the achingly cool design, which marries Italian styling with Dutch workmanship and ingenuity.

A pilot cutter-influenced plumb bow, bowsprit and low, squared coachroof set off a retro style, finished by an elegantly overhanging counter. These classic lines meet contemporary construction and attention to detail at Joop Doomernik’s traditional Dragon building yard. The top class composite work includes a keel grid built from 33 layers of carbon. Believe me, the result on the water is a truly intoxicating ride, both upwind and down!

Price ex. VAT: €390,000.

10. Rustler 33

The Stephen Jones design has the elegant lines and overhangs of the Cornish yard’s earlier Rustler 24, but with a comfortable handmade interior that makes it enticing to overnight on too – there is a proper heads compartment including wet hanging area.

With the addition of stanchions, this becomes a Class B offshore yacht. It’s a stiff boat to sail with a deep, dry cockpit, in which it is comfortable to sit, perch on the chunky coaming or stand to handle the tiller.

Rustler says recent clients for the Rustler 33 are ordering them with carbon masts and electric engines.

Price ex. VAT: £165,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-Morris-29

11. Morris 29

Fusing S&S lines with modern lightweight materials such as carbon and epoxy, the Morris 29 is a quintessential daysailer that’s easy to rig and maintain, a witch to sail and is as handsome as they come.

And there’s a deep, long cockpit and comfortable saloon below to keep any guests content while you hog the tiller. Now built by Hinckley and priced from US$266,500.

best-daysailer-yachts-alerion-33

12. Alerion 28 / 33

Cleverly marketed as ‘the 90-minute’ getaway, the iconic Alerion daysailer fleet, from 20-33ft, is designed to get people afloat easily and with the most enjoyment possible. Above is the Alerion 33.

Often seen sporting optional Hoyt jib booms, the models are easy and a delight to sail and have inviting and well-finished interiors.

Rarely do beauty, speed and single-handed ease combine this fluidly and successfully. Prices are available on application only.

best-daysailer-yachts-Friendship-40

13. Friendship 36 / 40

The elegantly timeless look of the Friendship 40, its classic lines, including pronounced tumblehome and wineglass counter, are by Rhode Island’s Ted Fontaine. A Friendship’s deep cockpit and wonderfully inviting and well-appointed interior invite you to sail on through the weekend and beyond.

Fontaine says both the 36 and 40 are still available to order, but at top prices: “The Friendship 40 would be built by Yachting Developments in New Zealand where the moulds are presently stored,” (priced in the region of US $1,350,000).

“And the Friendship 36 is being offered as a cold-moulded wood epoxy built boat that would be built by Rockport Marine in Maine – the yard that built the first 36.”

A27 : A test of a nippy daysailer with racer genes

YACHT rating of the A27

No, this is neither a spelling mistake nor a misunderstanding. The smart daysailer was presented to great acclaim as a world premiere under the name B27; now, however, the same boat is being offered as the A27. Behind the miraculous change from B to A lies a delicate and rather confusing story about an unpleasant dispute between Luca Brenta's family in Italy and Michael Gilhofer's company Yachtworks on Lake Attersee in Austria. The dispute centres on trademark and building rights as well as distribution claims within the conceptually homogeneous line of daysailers commonly known as Brenta - or B-Yachts.

At the time of the test, however, the dispute had been settled in court and the differences had been resolved. Gilhofer's shipyard in Austria is now trading as A-Yachts with two models of its own production, the A33 (formerly Brenta 33 ) and the new A27, which we present here in the test. Those who claim that an A27 has already existed before, namely from Archambault . However, the shipyard in France no longer exists, so the type designation is once again available - even if this should cause even more confusion.

a27 yacht

Regardless of all this background, the design of the A27 also comes from Lorenzo Argento. The Italian is a former partner of Luca Brenta and has played a key role in shaping the series of renowned Brenta Daysailers.

The elegant and elongated lines, the unobstructed cockpit with upholstered thwarts and attachable backrests as well as the short, hood-like cabin superstructure are typical of his signature. The look and concept are still considered to be style-defining for an entire generation of modern daysailers and have been copied many times, for example by Alphena Yachts or Dinamica Yachts. However, they have never achieved any significant market presence.

Stiffer thanks to carbon

Michael Gilhofer has the A27 manufactured in Slovenia by Oceantec. There, the hull, deck and floor assembly are elaborately built using a vacuum infusion process with vinyl ester resins and a predominant proportion of carbon fibre. The deck is even made entirely of carbon fibre. The low weight of just 1.6 tonnes when ready to sail is merely a "welcome side effect", says designer Lorenzo Argento, who is on board for the YACHT test on Lake Attersee; for him, the stiffer structures are more important. Because the boat is slim with a width of 2.40 metres and the proportion of ballast in the T-keel is high at 50 percent, higher forces are transferred to the hull via the shrouds of the sporty rig. In addition, the mast is driven without a backstay, which requires more rig tension so that the forestay does not sag too much in the wind.

Compared to the B30 as the "original Brenta", the design of the A27 bears witness to the yacht's development over the years. Despite the generally slender frame, the shapes at the bow and stern have become fuller. Although the frame is not bent at the rear, it is still noticeably angled in order to achieve a flatter underwater hull and thus more volume for more buoyancy. Argento hopes that this will make the small daysailer stiffer and more upright, which is indeed the case in the test. The boat reacts to gusts with acceleration instead of heeling. It makes almost no difference whether the other sailors are upwind or downwind.

The A27 has prospects of success on the regatta course

With average winds of between 6 and 8 knots, the A27 crosses at a good 5.8 knots and tacks at a narrow angle of just 80 degrees. With the 65 square metre gennaker, the boat also demonstrates a pleasing sportiness. The smart daysailer quickly logs a speed of more than 8 knots, which roughly corresponds to the true wind speed. With these excellent performance data, the boat certainly qualifies as a powerful inland racer with prospects of success on the regatta course.

The A27 sails in a very balanced manner. At the cross she has a slight upwind tendency and gives the helmsman a noticeable rudder pressure, which is very pleasant, especially for a boat with a tiller. The crew doesn't have much to do when tacking, apart from switching from one side to the other. The self-tacking jib requires no active intervention during manoeuvres, nor does the mainsheet, which is guided centrally into the cockpit.

Ambitious sailors might want a traveller for trimming the mainsail, which is strongly flared at the top, but the shipyard does not want to offer this as an option. However, the boat comes with a powerful boom vang as standard, which can compensate for this function to a certain extent.

Nice and clean" is the motto for the A27

The A27 also follows a true minimalist principle in terms of trim options. The halyards as well as the trim and reefing lines run inside the superstructure back to the two winches on the side of the companionway, which can also be ordered with electric drives. The sheet cleats and halyard stoppers are elegantly built under the canopy, which is only attached; "nice and clean" is the motto. And yet: everything you need for sailing is there, well positioned and of exquisite quality in terms of equipment. Solo skippers, in particular, will find it easy to handle and operate all sheets and lines themselves thanks to the tiller steering.

The comparatively high aluminium mast from Lico Spars in Italy is through-stepped and stands on the floor assembly. Low-stretch rod shrouds are included as standard. An identically high carbon fibre rig (with main boom) from Southern Spars is available to customers as an option for an additional charge. As an alternative to the self-tacking jib, the shipyard can also realise an overlapping genoa with hole point rails on the running deck, but refrains from labelling this as an extra - "it simply doesn't fit in with the concept," says Michael Gilhofer.

Another standard feature is the 80 centimetre long bowsprit made of carbon fibre. This is guided in a recess at the bow and is only bolted on there. This makes it easy to remove the trunk for road transport, for example.

Only fixed fuselage attachments for the A27 for the time being

The keel is available in two versions, as a standard T-keel with a draught of 1.75 metres and alternatively in a slightly shorter version with a draught of 1.50 metres. In this case, the rig would also be slightly less high. However, the shipyard has not yet specified an option for flexible hull appendages, for example with a lifting keel and cassette rudder. However, the technical possibilities are being examined and A-Yachts could well respond favourably to enquiries. With a width of just 2.40 metres and a weight of just 1.6 tonnes, the A27 is still a suitable trailer boat, even without a lifting keel.

Below deck, the A27 is a pure daysailer: Inside, the ship remains yawningly empty for the time being. Fabric pockets are attached to the sides and act as flexible storage compartments to keep things organised. Otherwise, the bare, sober white of the immaculate surfaces dominates. Two long benches extend into the aft section and can be used as berths with a length of two metres. Cushions are available as an option. It is also possible to install an additional plywood bunk store in the completely empty foredeck. The shipyard apparently already has a ready-made plan for this. This means that the daysailer can be converted into a weekender for a small family with little effort.

Electric as standard

As standard, the A27 is fitted with an electric motor with shaft drive from the Austrian manufacturer Aquamot. The shipyard has opted for a fixed shaft so that the heavy mechanical parts and the Torqeedo battery pack can be installed as centrally as possible at the front of the boat. Under engine power, the boat achieves a speed of 5.5 knots when cruising in calm water with little wind.

Incidentally, the technical installations are generally very clean and clearly laid out, and accessibility is exemplary throughout.

With a base price of around 136,255 euros, the A27 daysailer, which is just eight metres long, is optimistically priced. You also have to pay extra for a proper sailing wardrobe with main, jib and gennaker. A lot of money for a fairly small boat - but one that packs a real punch.

SOLBIAN Solar

A-Yachts a27 daysailer – 340Wp SP series

The A-Yachts a27 is a modern daysailer designed by Lorenzo Argento that combines sportive sailing with elegant Italian design and highest build quality from Austria.

The propulsion system is an electric motor powered by a 48V LiFePO4 battery bank. However, since many of these boats are moored on jetties and buoys without an electrical supply, charging this battery is not always easy. The obvious solution: charging with solar energy.

In order to not interfere with the elegant lines, a solar power system was developed in cooperation with the shipyard and seamlessly integrated into the deck. 10 bypass diodes integrated into the laminate and two independent step-up MPPT controllers ensure maximum shade tolerance and provide energy even in difficult lighting conditions.

The individual cells are concealed by a black base laminate and covered conductor tracks, resulting in a homogeneous black module. Alternatively, pigmented intermediate layers can be used to create other finishes, e.g. to match the paintwork on the hull.

For an optimum fit, the modules were checked directly on board using our 1:1 paper templates before final release for production. This allows not only the cable positions and contours but also the visual appearance to be evaluated.

340Wp provide approx. 1.2-2.0kWh per day in summer, which not only ensures a complete charge of the propulsion battery within a few days – when sailing, the 12V system and an inverter are simultaneously supplied via a small buffer battery, so that in addition to the continuous supply of cold drinks and music, even 230V consumers with up to 1200W can be used.

FLEXPLORER 146-30

The first of three Flexplorer 146 currently in build by Cantiere delle Marche, Maverick, will be launched shortly. Based on the naval platform of the model she belongs to, her project has been fully tailored to meet her Owner requests and specifications regarding layout, number of decks and equipment. Moreover, she showcases an array of distinctive features that distinguish her from the other two ‘sister ships’.

Main features:

  • Custom-built A-frame crane : this remarkable engineering feat, constructed in carbon fibre by Advanced Mechanical Solutions (AMS), fits flush with the deck after launching the tenders and is strategically positioned at the borders of the huge cockpit. This allows for ample space below deck which houses a beach club with gym, sauna, and diving center.
  • Collapsible bulwarks : bulwarks extend to the farthest end of the cockpit and can be folded down. Deck fittings are positioned at a lower level on the swim platform, transforming the entire aft deck into a vast beach area spanning over 135 square meters.
  • 22mm thick Ice belt at water line level to sail in iced sea.
  • A 9.5 metres custom tender designed by Rivellini and built by Cantiere delle Marche, and a A27 sailing boat can be stored and launched using the powerful A-frame crane.
  • Swimming pool in the transom: the transom features a pool which can be covered and used as storage for deck furniture while the yacht is underway.
  • Main salon and dining area : similar to the much-acclaimed Flexplorer 130 Aurelia, Maverick incorporates an asymmetrical layout on the Main deck . This design includes a full beam configuration to the starboard side, expanding the salon area and providing additional square footage. Simultaneously, it creates a practical passageway on the port side providing easy service between the galley and the outdoors.
  • Open galley : the spacious galley, positioned on the port side, seamlessly connects with the main salon. It features a central island, ideal for gathering with family and friends for breakfast, informal meals, or shared food preparation.
  • Owner deck amenities : the forward section of the upper deck houses a large open area for a rescue boat and jet skis. When at anchor, this space can be furnished with loose sofas and sunbeds, creating an additional outdoor lounging area.
  • Guest accommodations spread over four decks . The lower deck features four ensuite cabins , while the main deck forward houses one owner's stateroom . Additionally, the Owner deck includes another stateroom next to a single guest cabin . The radio room on this deck has been replaced by a large walk-in wardrobe.

FRANCESCO PASZKOWSKI ON THE INTERIOR OF FLEXPLORER 146 MAVERICK

Designing for an experienced owner is always exciting. Maverick owner had clear ideas about what he liked or didn’t like and how he intended to spend time onboard with his family cruising every sea in the world. As we use to do, we took the time for understanding his requirements to bring something new on the table and he liked to be involved in every step of the design process.

Maverick interior should incorporate a contemporary style and sense of uniqueness, it should be a reflection of people who live there and how they live in it, yet it has to be also focused on functionality to be suitable for the purpose the yacht was built. For our design we could rely on our studio experience in designing superyachts, on the collaboration of Margherita Casprini, on the shipyard expertise in explorers and on their commitment to meeting our proposals. Unlike the slightly smaller Aurelia we recently designed the interior for, Maverick is longer and features a further deck. It was a bigger job, the size was yet somehow helpful to meet all the owner requirements including a deck for the owner private use.

We focused on creating a family-focused ambiance, a contemporary atmosphere with the elegance of a neutral palette combined with the warmth of the selected materials and resulting in a mix of practicality and aesthetics for an overall feeling of peacefulness of a not overloaded space. The huge windows helped to the study of lighting design, one of our focus points in any interior we design.

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — When Alexei Navalny turns 47 on Sunday, he’ll wake up in a bare concrete cell with hardly any natural light.

He won’t be able to see or talk to any of his loved ones. Phone calls and visits are banned for those in “punishment isolation” cells, a 2-by-3-meter (6 1/2-by-10-foot) space. Guards usually blast patriotic songs and speeches by President Vladimir Putin at him.

“Guess who is the champion of listening to Putin’s speeches? Who listens to them for hours and falls asleep to them?” Navalny said recently in a typically sardonic social media post via his attorneys from Penal Colony No. 6 in the Vladimir region east of Moscow.

He is serving a nine-year term due to end in 2030 on charges widely seen as trumped up, and is facing another trial on new charges that could keep him locked up for another two decades. Rallies have been called for Sunday in Russia to support him.

Navalny has become Russia’s most famous political prisoner — and not just because of his prominence as Putin’s fiercest political foe, his poisoning that he blames on the Kremlin, and his being the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary.

A statement from the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office about an incident of inmate maltreatment is seen next to an order from the Minnesota Department of Corrections, Wednesday, March 20, 2024, in St. Paul, Minn. The Department of Corrections penalized the Otter Tail County Jail in Fergus Falls, Minn., for depriving an inmate of food and water for more than two days as punishment after he smeared feces in his cell and refused to clean it up. He has chronicled his arbitrary placement in isolation, where he has spent almost six months. He’s on a meager prison diet, restricted on how much time he can spend writing letters and forced at times to live with a cellmate with poor personal hygiene, making life even more miserable.

Most of the attention goes to Navalny and other high-profile figures like Vladimir Kara-Murza , who was sentenced last month to 25 years on treason charges. But there’s a growing number of less-famous prisoners who are serving time in similarly harsh conditions.

Memorial, Russia’s oldest and most prominent human rights organization and a 2022 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, counted 558 political prisoners in the country as of April — more than three times the figure than in 2018, when it listed 183.

The Soviet Union’s far-flung gulag system of prison camps provided inmate labor to develop industries such as mining and logging. While conditions vary among modern-day penal colonies , Russian law still permits prisoners to work on jobs like sewing uniforms for soldiers.

In a 2021 report, the U.S. State Department said conditions in Russian prisons and detention centers “were often harsh and life threatening. Overcrowding, abuse by guards and inmates, limited access to health care, food shortages and inadequate sanitation were common in prisons, penal colonies, and other detention facilities.”

Andrei Pivovarov , an opposition figure sentenced last year to four years in prison, has been in isolation at Penal Colony No. 7 in northern Russia’s Karelia region since January and is likely to stay there the rest of this year, said his partner, Tatyana Usmanova. The institution is notorious for its harsh conditions and reports of torture.

The 41-year-old former head of the pro-democracy group Open Russia spends his days alone in a small cell in a “strict detention” unit, and is not allowed any calls or visits from anyone but his lawyers, Usmanova told The Associated Press. He can get one book from the prison library, can write letters for several hours a day and is permitted 90 minutes outdoors, she said.

Other inmates are prohibited from making eye contact with Pivovarov in the corridors, contributing to his “maximum isolation,” she said.

“It wasn’t enough to sentence him to a real prison term. They are also trying to ruin his life there,” Usmanova added.

Pivovarov was pulled off a Warsaw-bound flight just before takeoff from St. Petersburg in May 2021 and taken to the southern city of Krasnodar. Authorities accused him of engaging with an “undesirable” organization -– a crime since 2015.

Several days before his arrest, Open Russia had disbanded after getting the “undesirable” label.

After his trial in Krasnodar, the St. Petersburg native was convicted and sentenced in July, when Russia’s war in Ukraine and Putin’s sweeping crackdown on dissent were in full swing.

He told AP in a letter from Krasnodar in December that authorities moved him there “to hide me farther away” from his hometown and Moscow. That interview was one of the last Pivovarov was able to give, describing prison life there as “boring and depressing,” with his only diversion being an hour-long walk in a small yard. “Lucky” inmates with cash in their accounts can shop at a prison store once a week for 10 minutes but otherwise must stay in their cells, he wrote.

Letters from supporters lift his spirits, he said. Many people wrote that they used to be uninterested in Russian politics, according to Pivovarov, and “only now are starting to see clearly.”

Now, any letters take weeks to arrive, Usmanova said.

Conditions are easier for some less-famous political prisoners like Alexei Gorinov , a former member of a Moscow municipal council. He was was convicted of “spreading false information” about the army in July over antiwar remarks he made at a council session.

Criticism of the invasion was criminalized a few months earlier, and Gorinov, 61, became the first Russian sent to prison for it, receiving seven years.

He is housed in barracks with about 50 others in his unit at Penal Colony No. 2 in the Vladimir region, Gorinov said in written answers passed to AP in March.

The long sentence for a low-profile activist shocked many, and Gorinov said “authorities needed an example they could showcase to others (of) an ordinary person, rather than a public figure.”

Inmates in his unit can watch TV, and play chess, backgammon or table tennis. There’s a small kitchen to brew tea or coffee between meals, and they can have food from personal supplies.

But Gorinov said prison officials still carry out “enhanced control” of the unit, and he and two other inmates get special checks every two hours, since they’ve been labeled “prone to escape.”

There is little medical help, he said.

“Right now, I’m not feeling all that well, as I can’t recover from bronchitis,” he said, adding that he needed treatment for pneumonia last winter at another prison’s hospital ward, because at Penal Colony No. 2, the most they can do is “break a fever.”

Also suffering health problems is artist and musician Sasha Skochilenko, who is detained amid her ongoing trial following her April 2022 arrest in St. Petersburg, also on charges of spreading false information about the army. Her crime was replacing supermarket price tags with antiwar slogans in protest.

Skochilenko has a congenital heart defect and celiac disease, requiring a gluten-free diet. She gets food parcels weekly, but there is a weight limit, and the 32-year-old can’t eat “half the things they give her there,” said her partner, Sophia Subbotina.

There’s a stark difference between detention facilities for women and men, and Skochilenko has it easier in some ways than male prisoners, Subbotina said.

“Oddly enough, the staff are mostly nice. Mostly they are women, they are quite friendly, they will give helpful tips and they have a very good attitude toward Sasha,” Subbotina told AP by phone.

“Often they support Sasha, they tell her: ‘You will definitely get out of here soon, this is so unfair here.’ They know about our relationship and they are fine with it. They’re very humane,” she said.

There’s no political propaganda in the jail and dance music blares from a radio. Cooking shows play on TV. Skochilenko “wouldn’t watch them in normal life, but in jail, it’s a distraction,” Subbotina said.

She recently arranged for an outside cardiologist to examine Skochilneko and since March has been allowed to visit her twice a month.

Subbotina gets emotional when she recalled their first visit.

“It is a complex and weird feeling when you’ve been living with a person. Sasha and I have been together for over six years — waking up with them, falling asleep with them — then not being able to see them for a year,” she said. “I was nervous when I went to visit her. I didn’t know what I would say to Sasha, but in the end, it went really well.”

Still, Subbotina said a year behind bars has been hard on Skochilenko. The trial is moving slowly, unlike usually swift proceedings for high-profile political activists, with guilty verdicts almost a certainty.

Skochilenko faces up to 10 years if convicted.
