Peterson The Royal Yacht
For all of the P&C Faithful who were concerned that Dunhill tobaccos had disappeared forever - good news! The blends are back using the same exact blends and tobaccos, coming from the same factory. The only thing that's different is that they are now under the Peterson name. Even the classic artwork remains.
Peterson The Royal Yacht is a singular blend of bright Virginias for sweetness and darker Virginias for more body and richness. The tobaccos are matured, then combined and finally finished with a unique mixture of flavors to create a blend unlike any other.

Just received and tried my 1st tin.. Aroma upon opening is wonderful, packs nicely and kicks like a mule! Mighty strong. The taste is like VERY rich aged Virginia, with just a hint of sour-bitter. My only regret is not finding this new favorite sooner!
Posted by Sean F. on 19th Jan 2024
This is a classic Virginia blend that has stood the test if time for good reason. If you enjoy Virginia blends you should give this one a try. I doubt you'll regret it, and you might even find your new favorite in the genre.

Excellent tobacco I smoked the Dunhill tobacco, and this new is excellent, my favorite Virginia.

I've been smoking this tobacco on and off for 30 years.
Great but -1 for price

It’s a great pipe tobacco but there’s better for a better price. I’d give it another star if it dropped a buck and a half or 2. 4 1/2 stars for now.

Posted by ROBERT HALL on 27th Nov 2022
It is a solid go-to good smoking, fairly mild flavored tobacco.

Perfect smoke. Blend with aromatic and pack on top And also just as is for a strong but mellow taste.
Posted by Joe on 31st Jan 2021
I found this to be a little strong but enjoyed it. The taste seems to creep back on you the next day as a reminder to light up another bowl. I also found it to be a very sweet and slightly spicy blend. It is in my normal rotation now and is a close second favorite to Peterson's EMP.
Best Royal Yacht

Been smoking pipes since the late 60's. I have tried too many blends than I can remember, most are forgotten. A tobacco like Royal Yacht will not be forgotten, excellent tobacco, IMO. I prefer Royal Yacht a little dryer than many smokers would like but each to their own. I detect no difference between Dunhill and Peterson's. I sincerely appreciate that Royal Yacht is still with us in original form.

Peterson - Royal Yacht - Pipe Tobacco 50g
Product Description
Peterson have purchased the Dunhill blend recipes, and are made in the same factory as previous Dunhill blends so you can now enjoy your old favourites again!
Dunhill Royal Yacht was introduced in 1912 and has been a firm favourite with smokers around the world ever since. What is essentially a Virginia mixture is given a slight plum topping, adding a little to the smoking experience. It comes across as almost a VaPer without the addition of Perique.
From the tin this tobacco has a wonderfully complex Virginia aroma with a slight raisin not to it. This dark tobacco packs easily thanks to the ribbon cut and lights very easily. For a blend of this nature it certainly produces plenty of smoke and is best smoked slowly. If smoked too quickly the tobacco will burn a little hot and harsh, as you would expect from a Virginia blend.
Tin Note – “ Truly a luxurious tobacco. Virginias are carefully conditioned to insure sweetness. They are added to rich, heavier and cooler Virginias. A unique flavour is added to the final blend to enhance the subtle and piquant aroma. ”

My subjective experience is that the flavoring, plum or whatever it is, is decidedly subordinate, supporting the good Virginia leaf but not overreaching. It is, to me, tobacco forward, which is how I like my aromatics. Clearly, others don't taste it this way at all, but that's how taste works, I guess.

Like, in which notebook section would I scribble my tasting notes, what area of the tobacco shelf would it sit on, what column in the tobacco database? Ziggywm said: On a serious note, what IS the chicken taste? We can only preface with the word "like", as you did, and speak in metaphors. Taste is an experience and all experiences are individualistic. We have some agreed upon "paint brush" terms as I call them like sweet and sour, bitter, spicy (but what spice?), harsh, hot...etc. Hence, we sample, try, experiment and become more experienced. But, that experience is as individual as your fingerprint. Click to expand...
danimalia said: I'd consider it a Virginia with a topping. Personally, I don't think its more aggressively flavored than many VAs that don't advertise any added flavorings. Obviously, YMMV, and maybe I got a mellowed tin. I was expecting something very strongly flavored and for me, RY just tasted like a VaPer. I should revisit it, though, as it's been several years since I had any. Click to expand...
Road To Pines
Might stick around.
Ziggywm said: As a rule of thumb (and there are exceptions as there are a number of VA types, even depending on where grown - soil conditions, weather, etc. - its similar to wine) VA leaf, especially Bright is flue cured. The heat from the wood fired flues kills the leaf quickly setting the sugars and keeping starch from forming. This is unlike Burley which is air cured. Consequently, Burley is more absorbent then VA and can be heavily flavored. Because of the sugar in VA leaf, especially Bright, it must be processed into cakes, steamed, aged - fermented - to make it smokable otherwise it will burn your tongue and palette. If flavored its usually a light, alcohol based natural flavoring, like whisky or vanilla, etc. In the UK its against the law to adulterate tobacco with anything artificial, like glycol, nitrates or any chemicals (preservatives). Tobacco falls under the spice laws passed by Parliament in the 17th C. Remember, London was the spice processing capital of the world for centuries. More exploration was done by HM ships for spices then gold. When ships came into port unscrupulous importers could easily add anything to the spices or tobacco, especially hay or straw to add weight. This is why they gravitated to the vacuum tin; I don't know, but this too may have been a Dunhill innovation; they certainly were the first to vacuum tin cigarettes. But its also why American drug store varieties were/are mostly Burley based blends, heavily flavored and adulterated with glycol and preservatives to increase shelf life by keeping it moist. One of my favorites. I bought about 50 tins when I heard Dunhill wasn’t going to be in the tobacco business anymore. Overreaction in hindsight I guess since the Peterson version is the same.

I had bought a tin of Dunhill Royal Yacht a few years ago at a cigar shop. I was there buying a basket pipe which I do once in a while. I tied it and absolutely hated it. The taste was horrible and it made me sick from the nicotine hit. I ended up gifting it to a friend. Fast forward to a few months ago it was on sale at pipesandcigars so I wanted to try it again since I fell in love with Gawith Hoggarth blends. Now I love Royal Yacht. I pulled it out of the tin and put it in a mason jar. I let it set in the jar for 30 days now it is very sweet with a nice tingly peppery note and smells kinda sweet and apricoty/dark fruit or stewed fruit. That has to be from the lemony zesty Virginia's. During the day I'm primarily a Codger Burley smoker but after supper I smoke the stronger Va/bur blends. A nice strong tobacco at night with some nite time tea puts me right out.
mso489 said: I just take it as an aromatic blended with a masterful sense of simplicity. It is not jazzed up at all, and the secret sauce, plum I presume, is just right to enhance and highlight a good grade of Virginia leaf. Like a good piece of writing, it doesn't have any extratraneous parts. Click to expand...
Some great responses here, from various points of view. I smoked up my tin of Peterson RY, but I think I have a tin with the Dunhill brand that I'll pop by-and-by. That should have some well-aged Virginia.

I think I'll re-visit RY at some stage but since trying University Flake (yes a VaBur) I find it to be beefed up version with a very similar topping. Of course, with Burley - but I find if RY didn't float your boat then UF may be a compromise.
makhorkasmoker
Part of the furniture now.
I dislike RY. But I don’t think it has anything to do with the topping. I’m just not a Virginia person. I wish there were something similar for the burley aficionado: a true straight burley that has a real nic hit , lightly topped with something that compliments the tobacco.

However, this does not detract from the excellent quality of the tobacco itself. Dunhill Royal Yacht is a luxurious tobacco with a beautiful topping of plum with hints of dark cocoa. After the topping fades you are then left with a beautifully balanced smoke that offers a healthy dose of nicotine. Categories: Pipe tobaccos Tags: aromatic, Dunhill.
