Westport Yachts History

Westport Yachts History

Westport Yachts has its roots in Westport Shipyard, a respected builder of vessels for the North Pacific commercial fishing fleet. Established in 1964 in Westport, Washington, Westport Shipyard began by building commercial fishing vessels for the thriving salmon industry in the Pacific Northwest. They eventually branched out in response to the declining fishing industry, adding fast passenger ferries to their production line. The shipyard did well in the commercial field, ultimately producing over 200 commercial vessels. By 1977, though, Westport Shipyard astutely recognized the changing economy required a major adjustment in the company’s focus.

Westport Shipyard became Westport Yachts, transitioning to building luxury motoryachts. Although the type of vessel the builders were producing had changed, the company never altered their dedication to quality design and construction, retaining their core commitment that every vessel they produce must meet the highest standard of seaworthiness. Westport began building composite yachts from 98 to 130 feet, pioneering a modular construction approach to yacht building that set their company apart from the competition.

Westport invested heavily in facilities, processes, and proven technologies to secure their position at the forefront of the industry. They employ exceptional molds, allowing their engineers to integrate more features into each mold to reduce the number of mechanically fastened sub-assemblies for superior structural integrity. Use of composite construction techniques allows Westport to deliver seaworthy, stable vessels that are stronger, lighter, and faster than other yachts in the same size range, while second-and third-generation employees, and workers with thirty years’ tenure or more provide a level of experience rarely matched in the industry. Westport has enlisted the talent of leading naval architects and designers including William Garden, Donald Starkey, Greg Marshall, and Jack Sarin to work in concert with Taylor Olson and the rest of the Westport design and engineering team to develop beautiful, seaworthy, comfortable yachts.

Westport’s innovative construction methods and commitment to dependability enables the company to produce each vessel in an incredibly short build time – weeks, not months. Westport has the facilities to perform all the work on the vessels in-house, including a state-of-the-art paint facility, and an impressive 40,000 sq. ft. cabinet & joinery shop. Modular construction methods result in lower prices by eliminating non-productive hours, making Westport’s pricing the most competitive in the industry. Over the years, Westport has established a reputation for standing by their contracted price with no surprises, delays, or surcharges — they even deliver their new yachts with a full tank of fuel!

Westport Yachts Opens Seattle Office

Westport Yachts

“This is an exciting development,” Donald Campbell, the Seattle sales and marketing manager, told us. Campbell has been active on the local marine industry scene for years, notably as the founder of San Juan Yachts in 1989, which he sold in 2015. Daryl Wakefield, president of Westport Yachts, and Campbell worked together at Admiral Marine in the past, and Campbell was recruited about a year ago to open the new office.

“We have been at the Salmon Bay Marine Center since December 2018 and I work alongside Sylvia Bolton and Ellen Henry, who are our new in-house interior designers,” he continued. “It is remarkable that we are one of the last, if not the last, big yacht builder in the USA.”

Westport Yachts was founded in Westport, Washington, in 1964 and quickly made its mark for embracing cutting edge composite materials in their vessel construction. The original focus was building high quality North Pacific commercial fishing vessels, and the company seamlessly expanded into the luxury yacht market over the years.

Today, Westport Yachts is widely considered one of the largest yacht builders in the world, and their yachts are still made proudly in Washington state. According to the company’s published numbers of total vessels built, Westport Yachts has produced over 100 recreational yachts, 170 commercial fishing vessels, and 35 commercial passenger vessels.

In addition to custom builds, the Westport Yachts line includes the W112, W125, W130, and W164 (122’ [34 meters] to 164’ [50 meters]). When a successful company is producing yachts of that size with industry talents like Sylvia Bolton, you’re talking about projects that spare no expense.

Welcome home, Westport Yachts! They’ve hit the ground running and already have a brand-new W125 for sale at their docks. You can find the new Westport Yachts Seattle office at 2288 W. Commodore Way, Suite 220, Seattle, WA 98199. You can reach them via phone at (360) 452-5095 and check online for more info at westportyachts.com.

new westport 125 launch

Westport Yachts announces sale of "enhanced" ninth hull in W135 series

Westport Yachts has announced the sale of the ninth hull in its 38.1-metre W125 series, now "redefined" as the W135. The sale follows just days after the yacht was launched in Westport, Washington.

The W135 will now undergo final outfitting and sea trials before being delivered to her owner. The ninth hull is slightly larger than previous entries in the W125 series (hence the name change), measuring 40.99 metres.

Designed inside and out by the American shipyard, the raised pilothouse model is one of its most popular – second only to the flagship W164. Once delivered, she will join sisterships Seas the Day and Lion's Den on the water.

Accommodation is for 10 guests across a full-width master and four ensuite guest cabins. There is further space for five crew, including the captain. While full details are yet to be disclosed, the new build will mark an evolution in the series with its "enhanced" layout. The W135 has also been equipped with a "state-of-the-art" Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system in the engine room in order to minimise emissions.

Powered by twin MTU engines, she is anticipated to have a maximum speed of 25 knots and a cruising speed of 20 knots.

Westport Yachts also has a W117 under construction, with delivery scheduled for April 2024.

The Westport Way

  • By Diane M. Byrne

westport yachts westport wa

Sapele mahogany and  onyx are  everyday sights at the Westport Yachts facilities in Washington State. Whether they’re on board the builder’s flagship 164 or the smallest series in the lineup, the 112, they’re being installed as paneling in staterooms and backlit countertops on bars. They’re soon joined by artwork, fine cutlery and more, all personally chosen by owners looking forward to taking delivery in the coming weeks and months.

These realities make it hard to imagine that, back in Westport’s early days in 1964, freshly caught salmon bounced about on its boats. As is the case with other Pacific Northwest builders, Westport started out constructing vessels for the region’s commercial-fishing fleet. (Some of Westport’s 170 or so fishing boats are still on the water today.)

Westport Yachts

Quite a number of changes have occurred for Westport since then, to say the least. Quite a number of changes have occurred in the yachting industry too. But the builder has never wavered from all- composite construction, and, in offering semicustom mega-yachts, it continues to prioritize predictability — for the owner’s benefit as much as its own.

Soon after the builder began its fishing-boat fleet, the yard added passenger vessels to its offerings. And when the fishing industry began declining in the late 1970s and ’80s, Westport turned to luxury yachts. The builder’s tough-minded engineering was well-suited for the switch to large, semidisplacement motoryachts. Equally well-suited was the emphasis on less maintenance, thanks to the builder’s all-fiberglass construction.

At first, Westport built components for other yards to put together, but eventually it built its own yachts, with arguably the most famous early launch being the 98-foot Golden Delicious . That was in 1988. Simply put, she was huge for her time, and she inspired a whole line of boats that were the same size.

As the industry grew, and as more ultra-high-net-worth buyers came into the market, Westport adapted. In 1998, the builder launched its first 112. With the arrival of the new century, it introduced the 130. Then, in 2006, Westport rolled out hull No. 1 of an even bigger series, the 164, which remains its flagship to this day.

Westport Yachts

Floor Score

Just as Golden Delicious was notable all those years prior, so too was the 164. Most yachts in the 164’s size range were — and still are — built with steel or aluminum hulls. Part of the reason is due to tradition, and part is due to bias. Through the early 1990s, some shipyards claimed it wasn’t possible to build a reliable all-fiberglass superyacht exceeding 150 feet. And yet another bias: Builders asserted that buyers in this size range only wanted fully custom yachts.

Westport, and the market, proved otherwise. The Westport 164 launched as the largest series-built superyacht worldwide. The yard counts about a dozen deliveries to date. And other builders have followed suit, offering semicustom builds in fiberglass and metal. The 164, however, is still the world’s largest all-fiberglass series yacht.

Because Westport employs the same technical platform for each model and starts every hull on spec, Daryl Wakefield, the yard’s president, can tell you without blinking just how many man-hours it takes to build each boat. The 164 requires about 240,000. Westport’s 130 takes about 150,000 and the 112 about 80,000. While the 125, introduced in 2014, is still too new to have set man-hours, Wakefield anticipates she’ll ultimately require 140,000.

Westport Yachts

Those figures are all for the “base boats,” as he terms the spec designs. They have 24- to 25-knot top speeds, and long ranges at slower speeds. Their systems are also tested prior to launch. Calling the testing techniques “part of our Disney magic” may sound like hyperbole, but Wakefield says the phrase sincerely, describing predictability from construction through after-sales service. (Upon delivery, clients receive 24-hour contact details for Westport’s service department and the shipyard.)

That predictability is what attracts customers in the first place. “It’s a whole lot easier to predict the price,” Wakefield says, compared with custom builds elsewhere. Westport can tell owners the bottom-line cost “to the penny,” he says, along with the day — not the month or season — of delivery.

The same is true when owners request changes, another significant selling point for Westport. Despite some rumors to the contrary, the builder invites buyers to do much more than enhance the base décor: nonstructural bulkheads can be moved, and some 164 buyers have requested stairways to replace the standard elevator.

WESTPORT BY THE NUMBERS

The shipyard has delivered more than 140 yachts, including nearly 70 hulls of the 112-footer and more than 40 of the 130-footer. With the 125 having been introduced in 2014, just one delivery has occurred — but Hull No. 2 has launched, and Hulls 3, 4 and 5 are on their way.

Sometimes Westport devises alternate arrangements on its own — like when, during the recession, it created a version of the 112 with an on-deck master. Buyers ended up gravitating toward that configuration, though some still preferred all staterooms belowdecks and ordered accordingly. When owners of the 112 were ready to step up, many of them naturally chose the 130. (Wakefield says some 112 owners keep commissioning new 112s, changing things along with their family’s needs.)

But in recent years, more began confiding that the trideck aspect of the 130 was too much boat for their comfort. That’s why Westport created its newest model, the 125. Because of its raised-pilothouse design, it’s akin to the 112 yet affords owners the room they want. Hull No. 1, Black Gold, is on the water, replacing a 112 by the same name. Hull No. 2 has launched too. Hulls 3 and 4 are in build for 112 owners. And Hull No. 5 is underway.

Westport Yachts

Composite Cutters

With 70 percent of customers bringing repeat business, Wakefield says, “We don’t want to lose them. It’s a great relationship.” But fresh models are a must. Wakefield won’t divulge much about the future, other than to say the yard is looking at designs between the 130 and 164, and larger than the 164.

“We’re polling customers about their next logical steps,” he explains. Simultaneously, Westport wants to maintain its cornerstone of predictability.

Whatever the yard’s next steps may be, perhaps they’ll include some freshly caught salmon — though, this time, just served as dinner.

Dozens of high schoolers rescued after rowing boats capsize off Connecticut

Two people were taken to the hospital with hypothermia and everyone else was rescued, police said, by angela fortuna • published march 20, 2024 • updated on march 20, 2024 at 11:05 pm.

Over two dozen high schoolers had to be rescued after two boats capsized on Long Island Sound in Westport Wednesday evening.

The Coast Guard said 27 high schoolers and two coaches were on board recreational rowing boats when they capsized after a sudden change in the weather.

Two people were taken to the hospital with hypothermia and everyone else was rescued, police said.

Police Chief Foti Koskinas said three rowing sculls and a chase boat launched from the Saugatuck Rowing Club near Compo Beach around 5 p.m. Each scull carried nine rowers between the ages of 14 to 18.

When the boats reached Cockenoe Island, the weather quickly changed, causing the rowers to turn back and head to shore. That's when 18 high schoolers were thrown into the water.

Four or five of the rowers swam to shore, and the others were brought back by emergency crews, according to police.

"Things could have gone very differently tonight, and they didn't because we have an excellent police department, fire department and EMS department here in Westport," First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker said.

A 6-year-old went into cardiac arrest after he was hit by a baseball. His mom saved his life

The temperature was 40 degrees and the water temp was 44 degrees, police said. The entire operation to get everyone out of the water took about 50 minutes.

One rower described the terrifying moments as he and others clung to a boat.

"It's just really cold. Yeah, I, I really couldn't talk," Davis Evans, of Westport, said. "I did a good job of keeping my cool, but it was really scary. I'm still kind of shaken up. It hasn't really sunk in yet."

Evans said the group from the Saugatuck Rowing Club had been taking part in their usual practice, but the calm waters quickly changed.

"It got windy and the waves are just crashing into our boat, and it was just filling up with water. It was really scary," Evans said.

The Westport Board of Education arranged for a bus to come to the rowing club to put the high schoolers on so they could warm up.

Police said a mass casualty incident was called and several area hospitals were told to be on alert. Koskinas described the scene as managed, but chaotic.

"As a mother of three athletes, I can't imagine the range of emotions these athletes and their families are feeling," Tooker said.

The first selectwoman went on to say that she hopes all of the families, kids and athletes are reunited and feeling safe and taken care of.

Koskinas said the police department plans to check routine procedures for the private rowing club. He said he wants to ensure an incident like this doesn't happen again.

"This was truly a team effort," Koskinas said. "This was a very serious incident with an incredibly good outcome, which we are very fortunate. And the families are fortunate."

Several emergency agencies responded to the scene to assist with the rescue, including the U.S. Coast Guard.

NBC Connecticut has reached out to the rowing club for a comment but has not yet heard back.

2 hospitalized, 27 safe after rowing club boats capsize off Westport

WESTPORT (AP) — Rowing club boats capsized during a fast change in weather off Connecticut on Wednesday, sending 27 teenagers and two adults into the cold waters of Long Island Sound, police and fire officials said. Two people were brought to a hospital with suspected hypothermia.

First responders said they came upon a chaotic scene off the coast of Westport shortly after 5 p.m., as some of the people in the water were swimming to shore and others were trying to get into other boats. Police and firefighters from Westport and nearby towns responded, as did the Coast Guard.

Two sculling boats with the private Saugatuck Rowing Club capsized as the water became rough during a weather change, sending 18 people into waters off Compo Beach, Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas said at an evening news conference. The people in the water tried to get on a third, larger boat, causing it to sink and sending more people into the water, he said.

First responders used boats to rescue many of the people, while others were able to swim ashore.

“This was a very serious incident with an incredibly good outcome,” Koskinas said.

The teens, all male, ranged in age from 14 to 18. The two adults were instructors. Everyone was out of the water and safe within about 50 minutes, Koskinas said. The water temperature in Long Island Sound was about 44 degrees, he said.

The teens were put on a school bus to get warm and were picked up by their parents, he said.

Authorities said they were investigating why the boats capsized, with the goal of preventing similar incidents.
