  • Description

HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:

The highly successful Trapper 500 is a design collaboration of George Cuthbertson and George Cassian, later known as C & C Yachts. In 1970 Anstey Yachts Ltd and the well known Deacon Boatyard in Poole amalgamated to become Trapper Yachts, producing a range of production boats of various sizes. The Trapper 500 was introduced in 1977 and over a ten year period, 600 examples were produced at the Poole boatyard.

Trapper Yachts

Trapper Yachts was formed some time around 1970 when Anstey Yachts was acquired by Deacons Boatyard. In 1973 the firm moved to a new, larger facility on the outskirts of Poole, formerly used by Kingfisher Yachts. Deacons Boatyard Ltd was then used as a sales base for the Trapper range. Some time later the company began producing the TRAPPER 240, a centerboarder based on an ealier Edward Dubois design, and the TRAPPER 250 which was the fixed keel version. The Bruce Kirby designed TRAPPER 300 was added in 1974. In 1981 the Trapper 501 was introduced, which was a more luxurious version of the 500. In late 1970’s Trapper Yachts began production of the TRAPPER 700 which was similar to the C&C 35, but with a different coach roof design. It was available with both with a fixed keel and a keel centerboard. The TRAPPER 31, (later named the TRAPPER 950) was was derived from a successful half ton racer by Rob Humphries. Due to unfavorable economic conditions in the early 1980s, the manufacturing facility was closed down. Subsequently the yachts were produced by North Shore Yachts of Elmsworth. In 1984 Deacons was selling the TRAPPER 36 which was built in Italy. Only a few of these yachts were actually sold. In 1987 the Trapper T250S was produced. It was a keel centerboarder and eliminated having the centerboard in the case case cabin. Few of these boats were actually sold. It was fitted with a 10hp Yanmar diesel engine. In the same year there was the TRAPPER 42(aka SHOW 42), a new yacht, produced by Barbaris in Italy, but actually built in Malta. Only a few of these were sold. No longer in business.

Broker Remarks

This Trapper 500 has been in the same ownership for 20 years and has been maintained to a high standard, she boasts a Yanmar 2GM engine which was new in 2004 and regularly maintained. She has had a new mainsail from 2021 which has very little use due to the pandemic. Owners Remarks: I have sailed Riff Raff very enjoyably and comfortably, mostly day sailing from Plymouth with some weekends and weeks cruising on the South coast between Brixham and Falmouth. For her size, I found her a nippy sailor and seaworthy - though never tested in heavy weather.

Anyone on the forum own a Trapper 500? I have bought one and would be interested in other people's opinion (standby for barrage of negative comments!!!!). Does anyone sail a Trapper out of Plymouth area? Just looking for some general feedback and I might also have some technical questions when she is re-commisioned at the start of the season. Thanking you all!! Rob

well done nice boat /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The Trapper 500 or 501 was joint winner of the Yachting World one of kind rally in 197?(possibly 1972) The other joint winner was the Ecume de Mer.

Bought a Trapper 500 hull and decks and fitted it out in the garden. It was one of the first bilge keel versions and just preceded the 501, which had an updated deck moulding. The boat sailed well in all conditions and was very good to windward in strong winds, but could be a bit wet. They have a novel semi balanced rudder that can be turned through 360 degrees - great for steering astern! You will not be disappointed.

Speak to Andrew Bray of Yachting World. I believe he sailed one in the Azores race many years ago. I had a 501 which was excellent to sail.

PIGLETSDREAM

Just sold my Fin keeled 500 after 4 years of ownership. A most amazing boat and without doubt the most underated 27 footer on the market. Fast and viceless with loads of space and beautiful to look at. We took her, or I should say she took us safely to the West Country and the Chanel Isles on many occaisions. Southsea to Dartmouth in 19hrs. Very kindly motion but perhaps a little underpowered in the donkey department. Balsa core to the deck so main problem is seepage through the chain plates and subsequent rot. The other problem is that the seal between the hull and coachroof has a tar substance and when it gets hot you find bits that have not been cleaned away. Bit like owning a car after the windscreen has broken. You keep finding bits of glass. The forum is a dated one in its style but is full of dedicated and knowledgable and very passionate owners of the Trapper range. Testiment to that fact is that the moderator hasn't owned a Trapper for a few years now. Why did I sell, to buy bigger and boy was that hard after the bar had been set so high by the Trapper. I now own a Fastnet 34, which I liken to a Trapper on steroids. I can assure you that you will have fun and you will upset a lot of people as you pass them without trying. Enjoy and safe sailing If you want any info, pm me as I have electronic version of the Trapper handbook. Go away Thursday night as I have a yacht delivery in France, so may be a week or so depending on the weather /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Wai_Tapu

Hi plastic_dart. My first and only yacht is a Trapper 500 and I am delighted with her. Admittedly, having been built in 1976, she's getting a bit tired so I have her out this winter for a refit after owning her for 6 years. I'd be delighted to help with any specific queries you may have. Have you got the roller boom main? I'm still undecided as to whether to go to slab reefing to improve the set of the main when reefed. The one thing that is critical is not to overpress - more than most (from my observations in our cruiser races out in the Severn estuary) the more upright she is, the better she points and achieves VMG.

Thanks for the positive comments people. Gland I didn't buy the proverbial Turkey! In answer to Wai_Tapu -no I don't have roller boom reefing anymore, it has been converted to slab reefing by a previous owner. I did view quite a few Trapper 500's before taking the plunge and was struck by the variation in the woodwork down below. Some were well finished, others looked a bit ropey, no 2 had the same combination of shelves/lockers- very strange! I am looking forward to blowing the cobwebs out of the old girl in April. Standby for more technical queries. PM sent to Pigletsdream (many thanks). Cheers all!!

I sail one regularly on the East coast and have to agree they are pretty exceptional for 27ft. The one I sail has the 501 interior so must be number 400+ as only the later ones had that. As it happens, I keep my own boat in Plymouth so may well be around if you would like some first hand experience. PM me if interested.

Trapper manual available HERE

The one that I fitted out was a 500 - hull number 482. Trapper used to mark the hull number in resin on the inside of the hull aft just beneath the deck. You should be able to see it from inside the large cockpit locker which I believe was on the stbd side

Hmmmm, it's true, I haven't owned a Trapper for several years now (3 I think) and it's fair to say the website didn't get updated very often, but then all the action took place on the board, clunky or not. Anyway, now we have a new website, and a new board. Perhaps we are worth another visit. The old board is still available as an archive, both are linked to the site. www.trapperyachts.org.uk nick

Broker's Comments

This Trapper 500 is well cared for and presented in good condition. She sails well yet is easy to handle with a furling head sail and self stacking main. The accommodation has a forward cabin with a double berth and the heads to port. The main cabin has a settee berth to starboard with a dinnete arrangement opposite which can be converted into double with another single berth aft. She looks striking and is competitively priced. Broker's Comments

Relatively fast, seaworthy boat, feels larger than her size. Good family or starter boat. Down below she is roomy, clean and comfortable. The heads compartment is so spacious you could be forgiven for thinking you were aboard a much larger yacht.

Her side decks are wide and clear, and the coachroof tapers nicely while still giving around 6 feet of headroom in the saloon. This boat is ideal for family cruising yet has enough turn of speed to be a worthy competitor at club level.

She has just has a comprehensive valet, carried out by professionals, so her hull and decks are in good shape and her teak trim has been brightened and treated. Below she is clean and tidy and all the basics appear to be sound. She really must be viewed to appreciate the sheer amount of space available.

Overall, this is a cracking little cruiser with plenty of accommodation and enough speed to make fast passages or be worthwhile taking in the odd race around the buoys, and all at a bargain price.

1978 Trapper 500

1978 Trapper 500 9m

Oostmahorn, netherlands, description.

SCHIP is VERKOCHT!

Vaste schroefas vetgesmeerd.

Lijnen/vallen/schoten/lieren/blokken alles in orde.

We often hear people say they are saving for a world trip, they have been at it for years, selling their house, car, sofa, grandma's painting...... even their underpants and toothbrush come into consideration. A world trip is expensive though..... Mwah, we have a different idea about that. Come to Oostmahorn to see this Trapper 500. Costs less than 8K, is quite complete and has very good sailing characteristics. These boats are heavily built and can take a beating. In terms of space, you can beautifully take 2 people on a long trip, or several for a sailing vacation, you name it. This Trapper 500 has a windvane gear, radar, GPS and many more things that are important for larger sea voyages. Technically good, optically neat both outside and inside, you can take it for a ride. Well, you can sell your house, car and sofa anyway, because what good is that when you are sailing somewhere in the Pacific........ but you can leave earlier for a price like that, and stay longer if you want. A piece of freedom is what you buy with this Trapper 500. Call or email us for a viewing, which is always step 1 before a trip around the world.

Fine richly equipped sailing yacht for a pleasant price.

What's on board, quite a lot hear:

- fenders - anchor with line - mooring ropes - swimming ladder - navigation lights - sprayhood with remarkably small windows - Nasa depth sounder - Nasa log - double compass - Radar: Raymarine - GPS: Furuno - VHF radio - WINDVAN! - Autopilot: Raymarine ST2000 - Radio cd player - Heating system - Beautiful gas stove with oven - cool box in the sink - sink with faucet - toilet in separate room - interior lighting - fire extinguisher - bilge pump - 2 x battery charger - shore power connection with cable - inverter 350W/230V - 12 volt connection (handy for your Smartphone or Tablet) and more....................

The engine is a 2011 installed Allpa Mini SF7, 1 cylinder diesel with 7HP. The engine and the complete gearbox, an Allpa Technodrive TMC40, were replaced in 2011, when the engine mounts were also renewed. There are 2 batteries on board, excellent condition. The capacity of the diesel tank is 25 liters, there are separate tanks available. Fixed propeller shaft greased. The engine is otherwise well maintained. This power source is also marketed as Solé Mini and is derived from the proven almost indestructible Farymann diesel from Germany.

In terms of rigging, things are fine on board. We start with Furlex's furling/reefing system. There is a large and a small Genoa with the boat (little used) and also the mainsail with 2 reefs is little used, sails are therefore good. Lines / halyards / sheets / winches / blocks everything in order. These ships are known for their good sailing properties. In the hand of a real sailor you will get a lot out of this ship.

She has been out of the water last winter. The hull is polished, deck and cockpit cleaned and the underwater ship is put in epoxy with a new layer of antifouling over it. So no osmosis, the underwater ship is in fine condition. The cabin looks a bit dated, see pictures, and the cushions are also a bit older but of course that can be taken care of. The design of this Trapper 500 is quasi timeless, she has a nice line with a touch of sporty character. Really a nice boat.

This sailing yacht is located in Oostmahorn, Jachthaven Lauwersmeer at the jetty and can be viewed there by appointment.

Leinen/Fallen/Kapriolen/Winschen/Blöcke alles in Ordnung.

Broker's Comments

The Trapper 500 is a design from the early 70's which is still popular today. She is a good sea boat which is able to maintain a decent cruising speed. She is easy to handle with a spacious cockpit with ample accommodation below. The forward cabin has two single berths which can be made into a double. The heads are to port with hanging locker space opposite. In the main saloon there is seating for 4 around the dinette table which can convert into a double with a settee berth opposite and the galley to starboard. There is no cooker. This boat has been on the hard for over 3 years so she does need a good clean and recommissioning. There are a couple of areas of delamination on the coachroof. We do not know if the navigation equipment works. However she does have a brand new set of sails.
