Yacht : modern meaning of the term and types of boats

The etymology of the term yacht comes from the Dutch word ‘jacht’, which was used in the past to define the fast sailing vessels used to hunt down pirates along the coasts of northern Europe.

Today, the term ‘yacht’ is used to describe all recreational vessels, whether sailing or motor-powered, with at least one cabin that allows the crew to sleep on board.

There is no established definition for the length of this family of boats, but common usage tends to define a yacht as a vessel longer than 33 feet, or about 10 meters.

As mentioned above, a yacht may be equipped with sailing, motor or mixed propulsion. It can have more than one hull, and if it exceeds 25 meters it also deserves the definition of superyacht . When a yacht is over 50 meters it is called a megayacht and, more and more frequently, when it exceeds 100 meters it becomes a gigayacht.

A yacht normally flies a flag that corresponds to the country where the vessel is registered, not least because, if it does not, it may be captured and taken to the nearest port for ‘flag survey’. As far as international maritime law is concerned, the yacht is considered in all respects to be the territory of the country of the flag it flies, to whose sovereignty the crew is subject.

A yacht flying the flag of a country, unless there is well-founded suspicion of illegal activity, can only be stopped for inspection by the military vessels of that country. When a yacht enters the territorial waters of a country other than that of its flag, it is obliged to fly a courtesy flag.

This is tantamount to a declaration of submission to the navigational laws of the country in which it is sailing.

Sailing and motor-powered yachts

The first major distinction is between sailing yachts and motoryachts. The current worldwide spread of these two families has shifted decisively towards motor yachts, which make up about 75% of the total sailing fleet.

Progress and design have produced many different categories of motor yachts, so let’s discover them together.

Motoryachts

Seen from the stern, a flybridge yacht is often equipped with a “beach club”, a platform that facilitates access to the sea and on which water toys are placed or simply used for diving. A staircase, or even two symmetrical staircases, leads from this platform to the main deck. Sometimes there is a “garage” between these two staircases to house the engine room, a tender and other on-board equipment.

The main deck is characterized by the presence of a helm station, inside of which a large open-space salon houses settees and a galley. The helm station often leads below deck, also known as the lower deck, where the sleeping quarters, or cabins, are normally located.

The foredeck often has a large sundeck bordered by a “bowplate” for hauling anchor. The bow is often “fenced in” by the handrails, which are vital grips for safety at sea.

Let’s get to why a yacht is called a flybridge. The flybridge is an upper deck, open 360 degrees and often covered by a hard-top, a roof usually made of fibreglass. The flybridge usually has an additional helm station to steer from a more panoramic position. An additional galley is often located on the flybridge, as well as additional lounge seating and sun decks.

Open Yachts

An open yacht has no flybridge and its main deck is commonly all open. The helm station can frequently be sheltered by a T-Top. Below deck, depending on the length of the yacht, there are living spaces for the crew which may include dinette, cabins and facilities. Open yachts can be walk-around, i.e. with the possibility for passengers of walking freely around the perimeter of the boat, or they can have an enclosed bow and thus have a raised deck.

A coupe yacht is a yacht without a flybridge, characterized by a sporty design, with the main deck open aft. Very often it has a sunroof and is always equipped with side-decks connecting the stern to the bow. It is a vessel that, depending on its size, is suitable for medium to long-distance cruising.

This is an important type of yacht, which has its origins on the American East Coast where it was used to catch lobsters. It has a romantic, sometimes vintage aesthetic, and is endowed with sinuous lines that, for some, are evocative of the 1950s. Very suitable for cruising and conviviality, thanks also to a large sofa in the cockpit, the lobster is an iconic boat that offers plenty of comfort and space below deck for at least one cabin and one head.

The trawler is essentially a yacht for owners who want to spend a lot of time on board. This is why interior volumes are maximized and the upper deck is always present. Also part of the trawler family are the famous Menorcan boats, inspired by the llaüts of the Menorca island..

Increasingly popular among motor yachts, too, is the multihull, due to its inherent features of stability and capacity. In most cases it is a catamaran designed for long stays at sea.

Sailing yacht

Sailing yachts are vessels where propulsion should mainly rely on the power transmitted by the wind. In the past, sailing yacht engines were low-powered and mainly used for entering and leaving ports, but today, for obvious reasons of practicality and ease of use, they have enough power to make the sailing yacht cruise at a speed at least equal to its theoretical hull speed. This means that sailing yachts can be used efficiently even in the total absence of wind.

A sailing yacht can be rigged in many different ways, these being the most common in modern times:

Sloop : this is the most common rigging on modern boats, characterized by the presence of a single mast with a mainsail and a jib or genoa. Sloop rigging has become popular over the years because it is the easiest to handle with a small crew and also offers the best ease of use/sailing performance ratio.

Cutter : Widely used for long distance sailing, it is characterized by the presence of a mainsail and two jibs rigged on a single mast. Normally the two jibs are a genoa and foresail that are used individually, depending on the weather conditions.

Ketch : this is the most commonly used rig on two-masted sailing yachts, with a mainmast, rigged with a mainsail and genoa, and a mizzenmast, forward of the rudder shaft, rigged with a single mainsail. The splitting of the sails makes this type of yacht suitable for sailing in bad weather.

Yawl : exactly the same as a ketch but with the mizzen mast located aft of the rudder shaft.

Sailing yachts can be monohulls or multihulls, i.e. catamarans or trimarans, but in all cases they can be divided into these categories:

Easy to handle and with plenty of space above and below deck, this type of yacht is normally characterized by an unbalanced length/width ratio favouring the latter, a small sail area and more powerful than average engines.

The interiors are fully equipped and sophisticated, with each cabin often having its own en-suite head.

The deck plan and sailing equipment are simplified, often electrified and minimal.

Cruiser-Racer

This yacht, while still featuring a luxurious and complete interior, also has all the equipment needed for sail fine-tuning and a generous sail area.

This is a category where special attention is paid to both the overall weight of the boat and the hull shape.

The hull lines are in fact designed to enhance performance and, inevitably, this results in a slightly smaller interior than that of pure cruising yachts of the same length.

Racer-Cruiser

The owner who buys this type of yacht has already competed in club competitions and now wants to engage in higher level racing. The hulls are light and can sometimes be made of carbon, and all the sail adjustments are fine-tuned to achieve maximum performance.

The deck plan is definitely designed for crewed racing and the sail area/displacement ratio is unbalanced in favour of the former, making this yacht more difficult to handle with a smaller crew but, conversely, capable of performance similar to a pure racing yacht.

A pure racing yacht is a sailing yacht built exclusively for racing. Free from any commercial constraints, it is built according to the type of race to be competed in and, above all, the rating to be obtained. The interiors of this boat are minimal. This yacht is capable of planing and sailing upwind at very low wind angles, but is almost never used for recreational purposes.

Bootsbesitzer sind meist ganz schön stolz auf ihre Fahrzeuge. Kein Wunder: So ein Boot ist einfach eine feine Sache. Doch noch besser fühlt man sich, wenn man eine Yacht sein Eigen nennen kann. Das führt uns allerdings zu einer entscheidenden Frage: Wann ist ein Boot eine Yacht? Und was ist der Unterschied?

Hierfür gibt es keine feste Definition. Es unterscheidet sich eher im alltäglichen Gebrauch. Grundsätzlich gibt die Länge den Ausschlag aus: Unter 7 m handelt es sich eher um ein Boot, ab circa 10 m wird es zu einer Yacht. Man kann also sagen: Ab 10 m ist ein Boot eine Yacht. Yachten sind luxuriöser und größer als Boote und werden für Freizeitaktivitäten genutzt.

Und obwohl in hiesigen Ländern eigentlich so ziemlich alles genormt und DINifiziert ist, gibt es keine „offizielle“ Definition einer Yacht bzw. eine Abgrenzung zum Boot. Schauen wir uns deshalb mal die beiden Wörter genauer an.

Der Name Yacht kommt vom Mittelniederländischen „ jageschip “. Können Sie also schon auf seine ursprüngliche Bedeutung schließen? Genau: Es war ein schnelles, flinkes Schiff, das gut zur Jagd geeignet war – also ein Jagdschiff. Ist daher eine Yacht einfach ein schnelles Boot?

Nein. Heutzutage ist es eher eine Frage der Größe – beziehungsweise der Länge. Wikipedia hat eine sehr schöne Definition dafür:

Im Alltagsgebrauch wird üblicherweise erst ab einer gewissen Länge des Fahrzeugs von einer Yacht gesprochen. Unter etwa 7 m spricht man eher von einem  Boot , über 10 m von einer Yacht. Eine typische Yacht in europäischen Küstengewässern ist heute um die 10 bis 17 Meter lang (30 bis 56 Fuß) und mit mehreren Kabinen ausgestattet. Auf deutschen Binnenseen herrschen bei Yachten Bootslängen von 6 bis 15 Meter vor.

Zusammengefasst lässt sich also sagen: bis 7 m Boot, ab 10 m Yacht.

Zudem kommt meistens noch der Umstand, dass Yachten im Gegensatz zu Booten oder auch Schiffen eher luxuriös sind und auch mehr dem Freizeitvergnügen dienen als etwa der Personen- oder Güterbeförderung. Ein Boot beispielsweise, das länger als 10 m ist und auf dem Fische gefangen werden, würde ja auch niemand als Yacht bezeichnen – ebenso wenig wie ein Containerschiff.

PS: Auch ein Motor entscheidet nicht über die Frage “Yacht oder Boot”. Denn es gibt auch Yachten, die mit Segeln betrieben werden – also sogenannte Segelyachten.

Natürlich gibt es noch feinere Unterschiede – oder sollten wir besser sagen: größere? Denn wenn eine Yacht länger als 18 m ist, spricht man von einer Maxiyacht. Doch auch hier gibt es noch weitere Unterschiede:

Diese Yachten sind in der untersten Kategorie der Maxiyachten angesiedelt. Sie haben eine Länge von 18 bis 24 m – was natürlich alles andere als klein ist!

In der mittleren Kategorie sind die „normalen“ Maxiyachten mit 24 bis 30,5 m. Das sind schon erstaunlich große Dinger, doch es geht noch größer:

Das sind alle Yachten, die größer als 30,5 m sind. Allerdings nutzt man sie immer noch „sportlich“: Man heizt mit ihnen in beachtlichem Tempo übers Wasser. Was man von der nächsten Kategorie nicht behaupten kann:

Mega- oder Superyacht

Sie sind die absoluten Giganten unter den Yachten und nur was für größenwahnsinnige Multimillionäre: Ganze 60 m Länge über alles (Lüa) muss eine Yacht aufweisen, damit sie sich in diese Kategorie einreihen darf. Kein billiges Vergnügen, denn bei solchen Luxusyachten geht man in der Regel von „einer Million Euro pro Meter“ aus. Wenn Sie also das nötige Kleingeld haben, dann können auch Sie sich bald ein Besitzer einer „Megayacht“ oder sogar einer Gigayacht (ab 100 m) nennen.

Aber mal ehrlich: Wer braucht das schon?

Kritik an exzessiven Yachtgrößen

Natürlich ist eine große Yacht etwas Schönes und Tolles: Mit Freunden aufs Meer fahren, Luxus genießen und sich dessen erfreuen, was man sich erarbeitet hat. Das finden wir auch total legitim. Aber irgendwann ist das „immer noch größer sein wollen“ nur noch ein Ausdruck von Minderwertigkeitskomplexen – und noch dazu einer, der für ziemliche Umweltprobleme sorgt. Den Yacht-Oligarchen und Superreichen dürfte das dennoch ziemlich egal sein, denn die längste Yacht der Welt, die Azzam , ist ganze 181 m lang. Naja, wer’s braucht…

PS: Die Schreibweise „Jacht“ ist übrigens auch eine legitime Schreibweise von „Yacht“ – Sie können also Yacht auch mit „J“ schreiben . Nur für den Fall, dass es beim nächsten Scrabble-Spiel auf Ihrem Boot – pardon, Ihrer Yacht – zu einem Streit kommt.

Ist eine Yacht ein Schiff?

Das ist nun wieder eine andere Frage – und wieder eine Definitionssache. Denn grundsätzlich sind alle Boote ab einer Länge von 50 m Schiffe. Demnach wäre eine Yacht ab 50 m also auch ein Schiff. Der beste Merkspruch zum Unterscheiden von Boot und Schiff ist wahrscheinlich folgender: „Ein Boot passt auf ein Schiff, aber ein Schiff passt nicht auf ein Boot“. Ein Schiff ist daher auf jeden Fall größer als ein Boot. Ab einer Länge von etwa 50 m spricht man also von Schiff. Ein Schiff würde man zum Beispiel auch nie auf einem kleinen See finden.

Boot vs. Schiff

Da die Sprachen oft trickreich sein können, fällt einem manchmal auch schwer und kompliziert, den Unterschied zwischen zwei ähnlichen Begriffen zu erkennen und ihre Bedeutungen zu erklären. Dies gilt insbesondere dann, wenn einige Definitionen sich dabei teilweise decken. Das ist der Fall auch bei den folgenden Begriffen: ein Boot, ein Schiff, eine Yacht. Wo liegt eigentlich der Unterschied? Intuitiv begreifen wir zwar die Unterschiede zwischen diesen Wasserfahrzeugtypen. Aber, wenn Sie kein Hafenmeister sind, wissen Sie ja wirklich richtig und präzis, wo denn da der Unterschied ist?

Schauen wir uns dazu gleich mal ein paar Definitionen an, wobei wir mit der einfachsten beginnen: Was ist eine Yacht? Was ist ein Schiff? Und schließlich, was ist ein Boot?

Was ist ein Boot?

Nun fällt es einem schwer, ein Boot zu definieren, denn eine Yacht ist technisch gesehen ein Boot, und ein Schiff ist ebenso technisch gesehen ein Boot.  Aber, wenn man über ein Boot spricht, denkt man meistens an ein Wasserfahrzeug, das kleiner als eine Yacht oder ein Schiff ist. Bei Booten unterscheidet man verschiedene Bootstypen, wie z.B. motorbetriebene Boote, Segelboote oder von Muskelkraft angetriebene Boote wie Kajaks, Kanus oder Ruderboote.   Eigentlich kann man sogar eine Rettungsinsel als Boot bezeichnen.

(Ein kleiner, jedoch verwirrender Vermerk dazu: In diesem Punkt sind die U-Boot-Kommandanten sehr deutlich und unnachgiebig: die U-Boote sind eben Boote. Sie sind keine Schiffe.)

Was ist ein Schiff?

Den Begriff „Schiff“ verbindet man am häufigsten mit einem sehr großen Boot, das weniger schick ist, als eine Yacht. Als Ausnahme davon werden Kreuzfahrtschiffe gesehen, die zwar sehr schick und fein sein können, aber aufgrund ihrer Größe und Leistungen, werden sie jedoch Schiffe genannt.

Schiffe sind immer sehr groß und sind für Ozeane gebaut, für die Fahrt weit draußen auf hoher See. Als Ausnahme davon findet man sogenannte Große-Seen-Fahrt-Schiffe, die ausschließlich oder überwiegend auf den Großen Seen zum Transport von Massengütern verwendet werden. Mit dem Begriff „Schiff“ bezeichnet man Kreuzfahrtschiffe, Kriegsschiffe, Container- oder Tankerschiffen und viele andere Schiffe für kommerzielle Zwecke.

In der Regel verfügen Schiffe über moderne, fortschrittliche Navigationsausrüstung und Technologie, gemäß ihrer Länge, Geschwindigkeit, Routen usw. Die Technik bei Yachten gestaltet sich weniger kompliziert. Die Schiffe sind für Ozeanüberquerungen geplant, die eine lange Zeit dauern, während man mit einer Yacht nur selten über den Ozean fährt. Normalerweise fährt man eine Yacht in Küstennähe, bzw. nicht weit vom Festland entfernt. 

Im Vergleich zu Yachten oder Booten verfügen Schiffe auch über eine größere Anzahl von Besatzungsmitgliedern. In der Regel sind Schiffe so groß, dass sie nicht nur einen ausgebildeten Steuermann, sondern eine Reihe von Steuerleuten, sowie ein ganzes Team von Ingenieuren benötigen. Dies umfasst auch viele weitere Positionen.

Schließlich sollen Schiffe die verschiedensten Arten von Ladungen transportieren. Natürlich kann das der Transport von Passagieren sein (wenn man über Kreuzfahrtschiffe oder Militärschiffe redet). Jedoch bei meisten Transportschiffe handelt es sich um den Transport von Frachtgut oder sogar von Ausrüstung für Wartung, Reparatur oder Tanken von anderen Schiffen. 

Was ist eine Yacht?

Eine Yacht ist, und ich glaube, alle sind sich darin einig, schicker als ein Schiff oder ein Boot.  Eine „Yacht“ hat eine gewisse Luxusnote und bietet traumhafte Möglichkeiten zur Erholung. Natürlich, auch zu Größe/Länge gibt es einiges zu beachten.  Eine Yachlänge liegt in der Regel zwischen 35 Fuß und 160 Fuß. Einige Yachten, bekannt als Superyachten, sind sogar länger.  (Jeff Bezos hat sich eben eine Yacht mit einer Länge von 417 Fuß bauen lassen. Das bricht aber alle Rekorde, wenn es um Yachtlänge geht).

Aufgrund ihrer Größe bzw. Länge, treiben Yachten meistens auf allen großen Gewässern, meistens im Ozean. Yachten sind für raue Gewässer geeignet, indem sie mit fortschrittlicher Navigationsausrüstung ausgestattet ist, als kleinere Boote. Daher können sie problemlos höhere Wellen bewältigen. Außerdem verfügen Yachten oft über komplette Besatzung/Crew; die Skipper helfen bei der Navigation, Technik und eventuellen Reparaturen und Host/Hostess kümmert sich um die Yachtgäste. Die Anzahl der Besatzungsmitglieder einer Yacht variiert zwischen zwei, vier oder fünf. Jedoch es gibt große Luxusyachten mit sogar einer Crew von einem Dutzend Besatzungsmitgliedern an Bord. 

Eine interessante Sache! Außerhalb der USA bezieht sich der Begriff „Yacht“ auf das Segelboot , und eine „Motoryacht“ bzw. Motorboot, ist eine Yacht, die durch einen oder mehreren Motoren angetrieben wird. 

Also, ist eine Yacht ein Boot? Ja, technisch gesehen ist eine Yacht ein Boot. Jedoch, eine Yacht ist ein Boot der ganz besonderen Art.

Unterschiede zwischen Boot, Schiff und Yacht

Boote, Schiffe und Yachten werden alle für den Transport auf dem Wasser verwendet, unterscheiden sich jedoch deutlich in Größe, Design und Zweck. Das Verständnis der Unterschiede zwischen diesen drei Arten von Wasserbehältern kann Ihnen helfen, sie richtig zu identifizieren und das richtige für Ihre Bedürfnisse auszuwählen .

Charterboote zur wöchentlichen Anmietung gibt es in verschiedenen Größen, von kleinen Segelbooten von etwa 20 bis 30 Fuß bis zu großen Motoryachten von über 100 Fuß. Die Bootsgröße hängt von der Anzahl der Personen in Ihrer Gruppe, der gewünschten Urlaubsart und Ihrem Budget ab. Einige Luxusyachten werden auch unter Verwendung von Hightech-Materialien und fortschrittlichen Konstruktionsmethoden gebaut, was sie in Bezug auf Leistung und Kraftstoffverbrauch langlebiger und effizienter macht.

Die Kosten für Boote, Schiffe und Yachten können je nach mehreren Faktoren, einschließlich Größe, Materialien und Ausstattung, stark variieren. Die Kosten für Boote können von einigen tausend Dollar für ein kleines aufblasbares Floß bis zu mehreren hunderttausend Dollar oder mehr für ein größeres Motorboot oder Segelboot reichen. Inzwischen können Schiffe und Yachten je nach Größe, Komplexität und Verwendungszweck zig Millionen oder sogar Hunderte Millionen Dollar kosten. Eine exakte Definition gibt es nicht, aber generell gilt es: „Ich weiß es, wenn ich’s sehe“.

Hier sind einige Beispiele: • Tender: ein kleines Boot, das verwendet wird, um Personen und Vorräte zu und von einem größeren Schiff zu befördern • Kinderwagen: ein kleines Boot mit flachem Boden und spitzem Bug und Heck • Jon-Boot: Ein Boot mit flachem Boden, das normalerweise zum Angeln oder Jagen verwendet wird • Dory: ein kleines Boot mit geringem Tiefgang, hohen Bordwänden und flachem Boden • Wherry: ein schmales, klinkergebautes Ruderboot, das zu Vergnügungs- oder Transportzwecken verwendet wird • Barkasse: ein kleines Motorboot, mit dem Passagiere zum und vom Ufer gebracht wurden • Tretboot: ein kleines Boot, das durch Pedale oder ein Schaufelrad angetrieben wird • Schlauchboot: ein kleines, leichtes Boot, das mit Luft aufgeblasen werden kann • Schlepper: ein kleines Boot, das zum Schleppen oder Schieben anderer Schiffe verwendet wird • Schnellboot: ein kleines, schnelles Boot, das für Erholung oder Rennen verwendet wird Denken Sie daran, dass einige dieser Boote je nach Region und Kultur auch spezifische Namen haben können.

• Luxury Yacht: a yacht that includes high-end finishes and features and the latest in modern performance technology. The term ‘luxury’ can precede any type of yacht, i.e. “luxury motor yacht”, “luxury sailing yacht”, etc.
• Sports Yacht: a yacht geared towards fishing, water sports, or cruising with a sleeker design and more powerful motor for faster cruising speeds. The term ‘sports’ can precede other types of yachts as well, i.e. “sports motor yacht”.

Yachts can further be defined as a superyacht or megayacht, depending on their size.

• Super Yachts are typically 24 meters (78 feet) and above.
• Mega Yachts are typically over 80 meters (260 feet).

Most motor yachts on the market are typically 24 meters (78 feet) or less.  There are only a handful of megayachts in the world due to their extravagant price tag.

Yacht Style Categories

Yachts can further be grouped or defined according to their form and function, such as with flybridge, sedan, pilot house, and sportfish yachts, for example.

• Classic Motor Yacht: a yacht that was built between the 1920s and 1970s (before today’s modern technology began dominating modern yacht manufacturing). A modern yacht can be built based on the classic motor yacht style.
• Sedan: a popular yacht style with deck space above the hull and living quarters below. The living quarters of a sedan yacht are enclosed and single-level.
• Flybridge: a sedan-style yacht with an open deck and more comfortable living space above the main bridge of a vessel.
• Daybridge: a multi-level yacht that is even more open than a flybridge. Belize Motoryachts are known for creating this distinctive style of yacht.
• Open or Enclosed: a term used to describe the layout of and access to the flybridge. In an enclosed flybridge, access to the above flybridge is enclosed inside the living space. In an open flybridge, access to the flybridge above is open to the elements.
• Downeast Style: a low-profile yacht with a large working cockpit and small helm station. This highly recognizable style is inspired by the mid-1900s traditional Maine lobster boat. Back Cove yachts are a shining example of downeast-style inspired yachts.
• Pilothouse: A multi-deck yacht like a flybridge with a larger interior main deck.
• Sky Lounge: an enclosed area at the top of the vessel that provides the benefits of the view but with several amenities, protection from the elements, expansive windows and sometimes a sunroof.
• Cockpit Motor Yacht: a yacht with more cockpit space than deck space.
• Sportfish or Sport Fishing Yacht: A yacht used for fishing with a large cockpit, storage space, and the ability to handle rougher seas. These can also be referred to as Flybridge Sportfish or Sportfish Express and are built for longer durations out on the water.
• Convertible: a yacht that combines features of a standard motor yacht with a sportfish yacht to have entertaining space when you need it, and also fishing space when you need it.
• SUV: a yacht that combines features of a standard motor yacht and sport yacht.
• Tri-Decks : a superyacht with three levels of staggered, enclosed living space.
• Expedition Yachts: a large yacht with a deeper displacement hull for more stability and comfort during longer-range trips.
