A luxury superyacht once used by George and Barbara Bush has docked in Liverpool.

The private ship was originally owned by Texas-based property developer Trammell Crow, and has caught the attention of passersby after docking in the city’s Canning Dock .

Named Michaela Rose, the custom made yacht was once loaned to George H. Bush and wife Barbara for a Mediterranean holiday - but is now soaking up the sun in Liverpool city centre.

The 160ft vessel has enough room for 16 guests as well as up to 13 crew members and was built in 1984.

It was named as one of America’s 100 largest yachts by Power and Motoryacht Magazine, coming in at number 84.

In 2008 the ship underwent a complete re-fit by luxury yacht designer Diana Yacht Design.

Michaela Rose has previously sailed to Ireland, Mexico, Panama, Chile, Antarctica and Greece.

A superyacht is a status symbol and the ultimate pleasure boat. What ordinary people envisage doing on cruise ships, the super-rich do on their mega-yachts. Space and change of scenery have appealed to humans from time immemorial. However, with luxury yacht ownership requiring vast sums of disposable income, one would think that factors putting the global economy under pressure, such as inflation, Houthi terrorists and Somali pirates attacking ships in the Red Sea, sanctions following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and before that, the COVID-19 pandemic, would slow down the demand for superyachts. Instead, despite severe disruptions, mainly because of the post-Ukraine 2022 Russian invasion sanctions, with billions sloshing around in the global economy, demand for these vessels has reached a high point, driven by changes in the tastes of the ultra-rich, innovative new uses for superyachts, and the number of buyers able to splurge on such craft.

Expensive Mega-Toys The unique uses of a superyacht are driven by the size and crew demands that separate it from a regular yacht. A superyacht is considered to be a pleasure vessel larger than 24m (80ft) with a full-time captain and crew. This is a costly outlay. There are added costs for not including maintenance, fuel, and expensive power plant, navigation, and communications gear.

The desire for seclusion and social distancing exhibited by the rich since the 2020 pandemic lends itself perfectly to these large, customizable ships that can be taken out to sea. A fully crewed ship is also needed to keep up with for new trend in exploration and environmental sailing, with boat owners venturing outside of the Mediterranean and Caribbean to experience more varied habitats. Other luxury sectors are taking note of these trends driving demand for superyachts, with hotel chains like The Four Seasons and The Ritz-Carlton aiming to offer bespoke superyacht experiences by 2025. By introducing this option, hotel chains are responding to the increased market demand for exploration while creating an experience that is more exclusive and private than a luxury cruise.

Demand has also been driven by an expanding number of prospective superyacht buyers as the number of ultra-high-net-worth individuals continues to increase globally. The growth is primarily driven by American buyers, with significant potential in regions like China and Southeast Asia, where ultra-rich buyers with disposable income are growing at a faster pace than they are in the West. This increase in wealthy customers in Southeast Asia, combined with miles of islands and coastlines, creates the conditions for a robust scene for superyachts in the area. The emergence of a new customer base wealthy enough to purchase super- and mega-yachts has made the industry resilient in the face of government sanctions against one of the industry’s largest consumer bases: Russian oligarchs.

Target: Russia Beginning in the early 2000s, Russian billionaires developed a taste for luxury superyachts, with some like Roman Abramovich (who is reported to own 16 vessels , including the Aquamarine, Eclipse, Garcon, Halo, Pelorus, Solaris and Sussurroo), Alexei Mordashov ( Lady M and Nord ) and Eduard Khudainatov ( Scheherazade , Amadea , Crescent ) placing orders for multiple vessels. According to Superyacht News, an industry publication, Russians account for a significant piece of the world's superyacht market. Their estimated share represents about 10% of superyachts exceeding 40 meters in length. The percentage of Russian ownership rises even further for mega-yachts exceeding 80 meters, where Russians hold the number two spot globally, owning 20% of these vessels. Research by Boat International estimates the contribution of Russian buyers to the global superyacht order book (valued between €35 and €40 billion) to be €3.9 billion.

The popularity of superyachts among Russia’s wealthy has caused them to become a focus of the sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Alongside traditional targets, including Russian financial holdings, banks, and energy, the assets of oligarchs are actively being seized and frozen by Western powers when possible through initiatives like the Russian Elites, Proxies, and Oligarchs (REPO) task force launched by the G7 and the U.S. Treasury’s Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Rewards (KARR) program.

The seizure of superyachts as assets will likely continue through the end of the invasion of Ukraine and possibly beyond. Recently, there have been increasing calls to sell or transfer these assets, allowing Ukraine to use or sell them to compensate for the damages caused by the war.

Europe Suffers Even though the superyacht industry has a sizeable consumer base in Russia, the companies building and managing these yachts are primarily based in Western Europe. Many of these boats are built by shipbuilders such as Lürssen in Germany and Heesen Yachts and Oceanco in the Netherlands. This has led one of the shipyards, Damen, to sue the Dutch government over damages it claims it suffered from the EU sanctions. Additionally, companies like Burgess in the UK, Imperial Yachts and Edmiston in Monaco, and Moran Yacht & Ship in the US, in charge of servicing, managing, and brokering superyachts, are also concentrated in the West.

While Western shipyards and management companies may lose revenue because of sanctions and asset seizure of the Russian oligarchs, keeping the yachts frozen generates additional costs for the countries where they are being held. Some Western countries devised a solution to ease the burden on taxpayers, granting owners and their representatives special licenses to pay for the frozen vessels. Notably, France and Spain have allowed the billionaire owners of at least four mega-yachts to pay for their upkeep. In the UK, the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) has allowed the management company Burgess to pay for pre-sanction crew salaries of a yacht frozen in the UK.

Though the media associated superyachts with Russian oligarchs, this archetypal image of a superyacht owner may soon grow obsolete if the sanctions regime remains or even strengthens, causing multi-million dollar losses to the industry. Instead, growth in the sector is driven by a new class of rich being created in places like the United States and the Pacific Rim, seeking luxury lifestyles that can be provided by a superyacht. The superyacht industry will capitalize on the unprecedented wave of demand to increase its resilience in the stormy global security and economic environment.

Insiders still have no idea what's going to happen to Russian oligarchs' seized superyachts

• It's been two years since Russia invaded Ukraine, leading to sanctions against Russian oligarchs.
• Many of their superyachts were seized or frozen , leading industry insiders to question their fate.
• The yachts, some of which are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, remain in a state of limbo.

More than two years after Russia invaded Ukraine, the boating world still doesn't have many answers about what's going on with the very large, expensive elephants in the sea: oligarchs' superyachts .

The war prompted many governments to enact sanctions against Russia's richest , including seizing their superyachts worth hundreds of millions of dollars. But it's unclear whether they can be sold or who'd buy them, leaving ports peppered with massive boats stuck in a floating limbo.

"The Russian problem, it's becoming a bigger and bigger and bigger problem," one luxury yacht broker told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show last week. Like many others, he requested not to be named, given the sensitive nature of the matter at hand and the generally discreet nature of the industry.

Russia has been a massive player in the massive boat market for a long time. In August 2021 — about six months before Russia's Ukraine invasion — Russians owned the second-largest share of yachts over 40 meters in length, according to a report from the industry publication SuperYacht Times.

They were responsible for 16% of new build superyacht purchases in the decade preceding the report and are known for splashing out on extravagant interiors and unique features. (One builder BI spoke to recalled a mandate from an oligarch for a large safe in the owner's cabin in which he could keep his rifles. The builder later learned he'd use them to skeet shoot on deck.)

But those sales have now screeched to a halt as oligarchs get hit by international sanctions. At least a dozen superyachts — worth well over $1 billion combined — have been affected.

And no one is quite sure what will happen to them.

Russia's sanctioned superyachts are hard to buy and sell

The first problem is that many of the yachts are "frozen" — not seized. That means that although the Russian owners can't operate or collect them, they don't technically belong to an overseas government, so they can't be sold without special permission.

Earlier this month, federal prosecutors petitioned a judge asking for consent to sell the Amadea, the 106-meter superyacht that has been docked in San Diego and costs the US as much as $922,000 a month to maintain.

"I've had some inquiries, but all you can tell them is we don't know the outcome yet" of the case, another superyacht broker told BI at the yacht show.

And despite the broker's claim of interest in yachts like Amadea , most ultrarich — or at least their brokers — don't want to go near the vessels with a ten-foot pole, even if the government does get legal permission to sell them.

"How does it look if you bought a Russian boat?" Julia Simpson, a broker at Thompson of Monaco, said. "Even if it's completely legal and normal, there are too many things on the line," she said, like how the original owner got their money and whether that could make the new buyer look bad.

There are also possible legal implications, as it's hard for the government to prove who actually owns the yachts.

"Oligarchs typically structure their ownership of these high-value assets through a web of offshore shell companies and trusts that is designed to conceal the true owner," Joshua Naftalis, a former federal prosecutor who now works for Pallas Partners, told BI.

And if the government does assume ownership, it's highly dependent on court orders. For example, a Russian whose yacht had been seized by the French government regained access to his boat after winning a legal battle in 2022.

"It's a very difficult process to buy them," Ralph Dazert, the head of intelligence at SuperYacht Times, told BI. "There is a high risk of the former (Russian) owner suing you to get the boat back."

He pointed to the Alfa Nero, the 82-meter yacht that Eric Schmidt planned to purchase for $67 million last year in an auction put on by Antigua and Barbuda. He backed out after various parties tried to block the sale, likely deeming it not worth the legal headache.

"When the reason for sanctioning goes away, which it may do," the Russian owners will try to get their boats back , Simpson said. After all, "the government's not going to pay them."'

That said, if sanctions are dropped, the yachts will be worth much less than when they were seized, as a boat not in use deteriorates much faster than one sailing the seas.

"Those yachts need to be used to be kept in shape, kept in condition," the second broker said. "​​Just having them sit at the dock with a temporary crew on board is not good for the boats."

And the sanctioned Russians who have managed to maintain control of their superyachts won't have an easy time offloading them in the future.

Americans who try to do business with sanctioned oligarchs would have a number of hoops to jump through — like finding a bank to process the purchase, which would be next to impossible. If somehow they did and the government caught wind, they'd face hefty penalties and the transaction would be void.

So Russia's richest have found themselves "stuck" sailing in a select few countries that will let them, like the Maldives, Montenegro, and Dubai.

Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern all want Alonso. Who'll get him?

It's accurate to say that Xabi Alonso is in a position that is unique across the entire history of organised professional football.

Big statement, but demonstrably true.

Never before has a coach who has still to complete his first full senior season been the No. 1 target for three of the biggest clubs in the world (with 26 European Cups/Champions Leagues between them) in three different countries. Those clubs are Bayern Munich , Liverpool and Real Madrid .

His other love, Real Sociedad , had him and let him leave -- they'll have to wait a long time now. Does that mean we should already feel huge sympathy for his current employers, Bayer Leverkusen , for whom he'll seal their first Bundesliga title if his team wins just 15 of the remaining 24 points available this season?

Well, hold your horses -- not necessarily. We'll come back to Bayer 04 in a minute. This is a fertile time for Spanish coaches. Again.

Two of Europe's "Big Five" leagues will definitely be won by LaLiga exports -- Ligue 1 by Paris Saint-Germain and Luis Enrique, plus, I'm promising you, Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen. But that number could easily be three ... or four, should the Premier League be won by either Arsenal or Manchester City ... and if Xavi's Barcelona stage what would admittedly be a minor miracle in LaLiga itself.

Of the 24 clubs left in UEFA competition (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League) seven are coached by Spanish managers -- more than any other nationality. All that notwithstanding, the 42-year-old Basque who played for Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Madrid and Bayern stands out.

There have been more precocious coaches than Alonso: Pep Guardiola won the treble aged just 38, but by the time Manchester City and Bayern Munich (five European Cups/Champions League between them at the time) were the only two slugging it out for his signature, not only had he taken a year's sabbatical, he'd been coaching at the senior level for four seasons and he was 42. Another of Alonso's mentors, Jose Mourinho, was 41 by the time he took charge of Chelsea , having won UEFA trophies with Porto, but he'd been assistant coach to Sir Bobby Robson and Louis Van Gaal, or head coach at three different Portuguese clubs, for well over a decade by then.

The speed of Mourinho's ascent isn't comparable, nor was being sought by Chelsea (wealthy, but zero Champions League titles at the time) comparable to this Spanish World Cup winner currently being the No. 1 pick for Bayern, Liverpool and Madrid. What's more, Mourinho was made to audition for the job (on Roman Abramovich's yacht) up against Didier Deschamps. Alonso is Número Uno everywhere he surveys.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who could easily be held up as the most successful and powerful football club manager ever, was nearly 45 by the time he joined Manchester United from Aberdeen, had been coaching clubs for well over 10 years and had turned down opportunities at Rangers, Spurs and Wolves.

Hardly Bayern, Liverpool or Madrid. Enough examples for contextual comparison.

Go through all the greats, as far back as you wish, and you will not find a manager who was still to finish his first full senior season but had become the "must-sign!" guy for three such mighty clubs across three wholly different football cultures. It's astonishing.

What's that? You'd like to know what his choice will be? OK, join the queue -- so would Bayern, Liverpool and Madrid.

Alonso is a strict, sometimes stern, but ultra-disciplined guy. There is no way on earth he was going to let speculation, negotiation or career-choice deliberation get in the way of his Leverkusen team lifting all three trophies that are still available to them (Bundesliga, German Cup, Europa League). That simply isn't how he's constructed.

Meaning that in recent months, since this situation was catalysed by Jurgen Klopp announcing his decision to leave Anfield in June and then Bayern and Thomas Tuchel revealing that they would consciously uncouple , Alonso scrupulously refused to engage in either media jostling on his story or firm negotiations with the suitor clubs. Any other such reports are nonsense.

However, the recent international break, while only a brief respite from 100% intense club duties, gave him and his long-term entourage time to nudge the decision-making process forward. A little clarity seems to have emerged.

Alonso, from before he signed up to rescue Leverkusen in October 2022, has been crystal clear in his own mind where it is he'd like to deploy his talents over the next 20 years or so -- he just didn't realise that all these opportunities would drop simultaneously.

For example, in summer 2022, he was approached by Marseille 's Spanish president, Pablo Longoria, with the offer to take over France's sleeping giants. Alonso had just left Real Sociedad's B team and was free.

Longoria told So Foot: "Xabi turned down the Marseille job with the same elegance he had as when he was a midfielder striking a 40-metre pass. I should have been furious to be rejected but it was all so gentlemanly that I almost thanked him for the experience! He was quite clear on the four teams he wanted to coach and was perfectly prepared to wait for them."

Those teams were, and still are, Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern. The pecking order, right now, is: Madrid (meaning he'd stay at Leverkusen for at least a season) very narrowly ahead of Liverpool and ... Bayern drifting.

Bayern Munich have their noses pressed at the shop window. They know what they want, they hunger for it, the money is burning a hole in their pocket -- but they look increasingly likely to have to accept they're at the back of the queue to such a degree that they might well move onward to others on their list of candidates ... and do so soon.

The fact that Alonso is on the verge of achieving something unparalleled in Bayer Leverkusen's 120 years -- making them German champions -- means he and his employers have a symbiotic relationship. Alonso would not naturally want to enforce a brutal move to the champion-elect's nearest rival -- Bayern Munich. Not when he has three other options: staying, Liverpool or Madrid.

He owes president Fernando Carro, the club, his squad and the fans too much. Not his style.

Bayern's honorary president, Uli Hoeness, told Ran Sports last week: "There are hardly any coaches like Alonso, who've proved they can handle a big club, but who don't have a job or who are on sabbatical. It's not so easy to persuade someone under contract, who may well be having great success, that FC Bayern is the 'be-all-and-end-all!'"

Genuinely, how stark it is for someone who lives and breathes FC Bayern to have to admit that. Last time the Bavarians set their sights on a Spaniard they, admittedly, elbowed Manchester City out of the way and hugely frustrated Txiki Begiristain and Ferran Soriano in managing to hijack what they thought was a guaranteed move for Pep Guardiola to come directly to England. Can they replicate that against-the-odds action with Alonso? Outside bet.

It's partly explained because of how Alonso feels about his current employers -- who extended his contract (until summer 2026) only last August. When that news was revealed, Leverkusen's sports director, Simon Rolfes, said: "Us appointing Xabi is getting great applause right now but when we chose him there was skepticism. He was world-famous ... yet a coach without experience of leading an elite club. But I was convinced of his ability."

Leverkusen acted so firmly last August, long before the magnificence of their current season even began to take shape and suggest that Alonso needed rewarding, because they were positive that Real Madrid would sign and seal their former midfielder to take over as coach this summer. It was a wholly understandable precaution.

In August 2023, the Brazilian CBF was ruled by Ednaldo Rodrigues, who had made it quite clear that he wanted the brilliant veteran Italian Carlo Ancelotti to take over the national team as soon as possible, if not sooner. Ancelotti was out of contract at Madrid in June 2024 -- his move to Brazil looked a shoo-in.

Rolfes reacted with supreme anticipation and precision -- ensuring that Alonso was contracted for almost three more years with the implication that either they'd keep the vibrant young Spaniard or be paid damn good compensation if he left. They knew that even securing him in the mid-term didn't automatically ensure that Alonso would be irrevocably locked in.

Leverkusen's Spanish CEO Fernando Carro has already explained to Marca: "We didn't need to have a release clause in writing with Xabi. We have a great relationship and he knows we're a serious club.

"We won't insist on keeping anyone who doesn't want to be here. There's nothing on paper but a verbal agreement is still an agreement. If he requires to do something in the future then we'll talk. I only hope we don't have to because he's happy and he wants to stay."

Madrid are in pole position because, long before this was a three-way auction, they specifically built him into their succession plan. Immediately as Ancelotti's Brazilian dream looked as if it were crumbling, with Rodrigues being removed from his post (only briefly it proved) by the Brazilian government last December, Florentino Perez neatly stitched in his preferred segue by renewing Ancelotti until summer 2026.

Absolutely zero coincidence that this was in harmony with when Alonso would be guaranteed to be free from his Leverkusen deal. The result: a Madrid squad beautifully built, stadium renewed and ready to earn huge new revenue, steady-hand Ancelotti tied up for two more years and Cool-Hand Xabi waiting to take over.

Meaning that Liverpool have quite some work to do in order not to join Bayern Munich with their noses pressed to the window -- seeing the candy, wanting the candy, but not being allowed in.

Alonso's ties to the city, to the club, his awareness that Liverpool, too, have renewed and fortified their squad and the residual ache, about which he's spoken, that the Premier League was the only national title he didn't win in the three countries he graced, can all, feasibly, combine to draw him away from the Bundesliga and to ask Florentino Perez for a little extra time before coming home to Madrid.

And what has the prospect of Leverkusen playing Liverpool in Dublin for the Europa League title in what might be Klopp's last game in charge of the Reds done for the pending drama -- whether Alonso wants to take over or has other plans?

It has hyped that drama right up, is what it's done. As it stands, however, Liverpool are not yet in the box seat.

Leaving the prospect of Leverkusen, who've been so smart, so visionary, so brave and so successful in prising their way into Alonso's dream career trajectory, potentially reaping the benefits of at least one more season if moving to Madrid in due course, rather than Anfield, is what he ultimately chooses.

Meantime, get geared up for Leverkusen, who have only one domestic trophy in these 120 years of history, tilting very hard indeed at winning three of the damn things in the next 60 days. And then partying.

Lovely 2-Bedroom Barge Brunswick Dock Liverpool! is situated in Liverpool, less than 1 km from ACC Liverpool, a 19-minute walk from Albert Dock, as well as 2.4 km from Philharmonic Hall. The property has lake and city views, and is less than 1 km from M&S Bank Arena Liverpool. Outdoor dining is also possible at the boat .

The accommodation is beautiful and cosy. There are so many detailed little touches and made our stay so enjoyable, such as welcome basket, the fresh fruits.

The boat with a terrace and river views features 2 bedrooms, a living room, a flat-screen TV, an equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and an oven, and 1 bathroom with a bath. Towels and bed linen are featured in the boat . The property has an outdoor dining area.
