AN OVERVIEW ON ACALA
Acala’s well-balanced profile with a gently raked bow and compact superstructure captures the very soul of an explorer vessel combining it with the elegance of a luxury yacht that will stand the test of time.
A pure custom yacht, Acala takes full advantage of CDM’s experience and its approach to explorer yacht building. Her project showcases the collaborative brilliance of Horacio Bozzo, who designed her exquisite exterior lines, and Simon Hamui, the mastermind behind her captivating interior design. Acala has been commissioned by an experienced yachtsman who, over the years, owned yachts built by shipyards such as Feadship, Lürssen, Blohm and Voss. He is a repeat client for CDM , a yard which gained his full confidence having enjoyed the feel of comfort and safety of his previous Acala, a Darwin 102, cruising in the Med but also sailing the expanses of the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic and reaching the wild beauty of remote destinations and the best diving spots in the world.
EXTERIOR DESIGN
Her profile, with a gently raked bow and compact superstructure, captures the very soul of an explorer vessel combining it with the elegance of a luxury yacht that will stand the test of time. Large windows on the Main deck whose mullions seem not to join the superstructure that are undoubtedly Acala profile’s signature features. All shapes, volumes and lines compose a harmonious geometry while her roomy body encompasses luxury social areas and very large and comfortable crew quarters, as requested by the Owner whose plans include long term cruising to reach the farthest corners of the world. Considering the generous beam (8.6 metres) and all deck heights being a minimum of 2.2 metres, we can safely say that her designer, Horacio Bozzo, has created an admirably balanced exterior profile.
INTERIOR DESIGN & LAYOUT
The interior design of Acala crafted by Mexican architect Simon Hamui , embodies a perfect blend of luxury and relaxation. It effortlessly allows guests to feel comfortable in casual beach attire or elegantly dressed for a formal dinner, providing a versatile ambiance for all occasions. Acala , with her nicely and thoughtfully organized interior layout, accommodates twelve guests in six suites, ensuring both social and private spaces are seamlessly distributed across thre decks, plus a large and highly livable Sun deck. Wood has been extensively utilized throughout the yacht, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Whether it's in the flooring, paneling, or furniture, the use of wood enhances the aesthetic appeal and creates a sense of timeless beauty. Additionally, the choice of wood contributes to a cozy and natural ambiance, enhancing the overall comfort and luxury of the yacht's interior spaces. Among the essences used on board, textured, anti-skid smoked ash, oil finish flooring provides a pleasant feel walking barefoot. When it comes to the furnishing, Simon Hamui has curated a combination of bespoke elements and selected pieces from renowned Italian manufacturers.
Main deck On the main deck, a lobby with an adjoining pantry serves as a connecting space between the intimate saloon and the guest private quarters, creating a seamless transition within the living areas. The full beam Main deck , from amidship forward is dedicated to guests and Owners’ night quarters . Three large Vip and extremely comfortable Owner suite to starboard side are flooded with natural light thanks to large windows that offer splendid panoramic views. Uncommon for a medium-sized yacht, Acala’s unique layout was specifically requested by the Owner, recognizing the importance of providing comfortable and well-lit hideaways for relaxation and privacy during long journeys. On the Main deck, a departure from the conventional large saloon is embraced, featuring a convenient family/TV room with a desk for video editing to starboard and cosy sofas to port. The Upper Deck boasts a large panoramic sky lounge with a dining area. When the large glass doors are fully open and folded sideways, the saloon merge with the outdoors, creating a unique environment. Acala’s owners are skilled and avid divers, explorers, photographers and video makers (the lazarette hosts a full equipment for professional diving). Having traveled the world and explored remote destinations and exceptional diving spots with their previous yachts, they are determined to continue their adventurous journey with Acala. With a desire to reminisce and share their cherished experiences with loved ones, they have thoughtfully incorporated in the saloon a dedicated post-production and editing area for photos and videos. Once processed, these captivating visuals can be enjoyed on the large, high-resolution TV screen, all while comfortably seated on the C-shaped sofa.
Upper deck The ‘main’ saloon is actually on the Upper deck. It seamless integrates a dining area astern and a comfortable lounging area forward. It opens onto a cozy outdoor lounging area astern and, to starboard, onto a large passageway that can be easily used as a panoramic and well protected terrace. Moving forward we enter the Captain’s domain: a properly equipped wheelhouse and the Captain’s cabin.
Lower deck In addition to the night accommodation on the main deck, the lower deck features two spacious twin cabins with pullman beds, providing a welcoming space for the youngsters and their friends. The crew quarters and service areas on the Lower deck are meticulously designed to be both functional and well-appointed, fulfilling the specific requirements set by the Owner. Occupying a significant portion of the Lower deck's forward section, this area is dedicated to providing the crew with comfortable and efficient living quarters, ensuring they can attend to their duties with ease while maintaining a high level of service.
Outdoor areas Acala offers expansive outdoor spaces spread across three decks. The Main deck boasts a generously sized cockpit that encompasses dining/lounging area, a swimming pool and ample spaces for relaxation. Moving up to the Upper deck, guests will find a captivating outdoor conversation area characterized by semicircular sofas. Finally the Sun deck, seamlessly integrated into the vessel’s profile, serves as a social hub for Acala’s guests. It features al fresco dining, a bar, a vast sunbathing area with swimming pool. Large glass doors protect the centrally positioned dining area providing the opportunity to enjoy meals while underway. A dumbwaiter connects the galley located on the Lower deck to all deck, Sun deck included, to convey food and drinks and ease the work of crew.
AN OVERVIEW ON TECHNICAL ASPECTS
Acala has a full displacement naval architecture by Sergio Cutolo/Hydro Tec offering large volume (440GT) and the smoothest of travel even in rough seas ensuring excellent comfort and total safety. Engineering has been developed by the yard technical department in collaboration with Hydro Tec. Needless to add that she, like all explorer yachts built by Cantiere delle Marche, features a thick and robust steel hull and light aluminium superstructure. The engine room shows the yard’s expertise, with ample space to access machinery, a control room (not standard on a yacht this size) and access down to a tunnel – of standing height – that runs the length of the hull, letting crew get easily to stabilisers, piping and storages. With a total length of 43,10 metres , a beam of 8.60m , thanks to hull geometry, 62 400-litre fuel tanks, and the extremely frugal consumption of her twin Caterpillare C32 Acert engines 746kW each, Acala has a top speed of 15 knots and an expedition-worthy range of 8,000 nautical miles at 9.5 knots. Stability both underway and act anchor is granted by two pairs of electrical driven stabilizers. The yacht’s engine room , as all engine rooms built by CDM, is a showpiece that stands out for its cleanliness and functionality with all the yacht’s systems and machineries set up to accommodate easy maintenance. Acala is a pure breed explorer therefore she needs a high level of independence. The engine room is one of the sources of that independence as its redundant equipment allow to sail far and wide and to reach remote areas of the globe where it is impossible to access any sort of assistance. An expansive lazarette provides a very large storage area needed for many cruising necessities, water toys, diving equipment, etc. A 9m tender is stored on the Upper deck forward while a 14.5m tender is frequently towed.

Exclusive: First look on board 43m custom CdM explorer Acala
Related articles, superyacht directory.
Italian shipyard Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) has offered an exclusive first look on board its latest custom explorer yacht Acala .
Acala was commissioned by an experienced yachtsman and a repeat client of the shipyard who had previously owned a Darwin 102 by the same name as well as a 78 metre Lürssen. Looking to cruise far and wide, the owner sold his Lürssen and construction started on Acala, which made her debut three years later at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show.
Acala marks the first collaboration with the Viareggio-based designer and naval architect Horacio Bozzo who handled the exterior design. Her profile is described by the shipyard as "severe" with a raked bow and compact superstructure. Acala offers 440GT of volume with a full displacement steel hull, an 8.6 metre beam and generous crew quarters at the request of the owner. Naval architecture comes courtesy of Sergio Cutolo/ Hydro Tec .
“The work on technical specifications has been extremely detailed and it lasted almost 12 months to achieve a double result: to build a 43-metre yacht with the most detailed and comprehensive specs we have ever drawn up and to proceed with no need of major modifications as construction progressed,” said Vasco Buonpensiere, CEO of CdM.
“We joke around saying that we have built the smallest 80-metre yacht ever built,” he added.
The interior, designed by Mexican architect Simon Hamui , can sleep a total of 12 guests across six cabins. The main deck is home to three large VIP cabins and a smaller-than-usual master suite set to starboard; the owner saw no need for a sweeping master cabin and instead, opted for an additional cabin to accommodate friends. The remaining guest accommodation, made up of two twins, can be found on the deck below.
Acala 's interior palette is calm and muted with a variety of different woods, including aged ash and wire-brushed oak, with Eucalyptus in the master suite and grey Sucupira wood in guest cabins. Sofas are upholstered in cashmere, rugs are hand-woven alpaca and most of the furniture is custom-built.
Interior highlights include an "intimate" main saloon and panoramic sky lounge on the upper deck. On Acala, the upper saloon assumes the role of the main saloon with seating forward, a large dining table and full-height doors that open fully to create a single indoor-outdoor entertaining space. Full-height doors can also be found to port and starboard.
On deck is a large cockpit and swimming pool; up above is a partially shaded sundeck with a second pool and dining area served by a dumbwaiter. Freeing up main deck space for cabins allows for a large crew mess and crew cabins, with the galley positioned on the lower deck and two pantries on both the main and upper decks.
Instead of opting for a beach club with a water-level lounge, the beach club on Acala is a practical dive store with cylinders, wetsuits and a nitrox compressor found in the engine room. The glass-bottomed pool on the main deck doubles as a skylight here.
The main tender is stored forward on the upper deck while the lazarette provides a large storage area. Acala is powered by twin Caterpillar C32 Acert engines with an expedition-worthy range of 8,000 nautical miles at a speed of 9.5 knots.

The 43.1m/141.4ft custom expedition yacht ACALA from Cantiere delle Marche was launched in 2022 and is constructed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. The exterior styling of M/Y ACALA is the work of Horacio Bozzo design, while the naval architecture comes from Hydro Tec and the interiors by Mexican architect Simon Hamui. The accommodation sleeps up to 12 guests in six en-suite cabins, and the professional crew of 11 will ensure that everything is in top condition while exploring across the world.
NOTABLE FEATURES OF ACALA: ~Two swimming pools ~Massive skylounge with dining area ~Main deck Master suite ~Extensive cruising range of 5,000 nautical miles ~Draft of 2.5m/8.2ft to access shallow waterways ~Air conditioning ~Wi-Fi
The main deck aft provides a place to lounge and dine out of the sunshine, and a swimming pool along the stern. There is room on the upper deck aft for alfresco dining and lounging facilities, while the foredeck is used to store the tender and other motorised water toys, which will be safely launched and retrieved using a Davit crane.
A second swimming pool is available on the partially shaded sundeck, where guests are also treated to a sunbathing area, alfresco dining and lounging facilities, and a bar.
The lower deck layout hosts the crew accommodation and the twin guest cabins, the galley which serves all decks using a dumbwaiter, then the engine room and a stern lazarette for the storage of water toys.
On the main deck, the Master suite and VIP staterooms are forward, while amidships is the main foyer with day head and then the cosy main salon aft.

43m full-custom explorer yacht Acala launched at Cantiere delle Marche
- Annarita Mariani
- January 28, 2022
Cantiere delle Marche announces the launch of Acala, a 43m explorer superyacht commissioned by a repeat client of the Italian shipyard who had previously owned a Darwin 102, with which he has sailed extensively in the Pacific and Atlantic.
Acala: design
Acala is an explorer yacht reflecting the tradition of Cantiere delle Marche. The new addition marks the first collaboration with the Argentinean Varazze-based designer and naval architect Horacio Bozzo who handled the eye-catching exterior design. But Acala has also reconfirmed the presence of Sergio Cutolo – Hydro Tec, at the helm of the naval architecture design of the Italian shipyard. The luxury and relaxing interior design, instead, is by Mexican architect Simon Hamui. This multidisciplinary approach allowed for a total level of customization.
“ The aim of our design work is the pleasure of seeing the owner’s desires taking shape and recognizing himself in it ”- says Horacio Bozzo – Designing an explorer for an experienced owner who grew up around boats and understands yachting perfectly, is very gratifying, We started from a white piece of paper and brainstormed a lot with him to fulfil the whole family needs.”
Three decks and a sundeck: these are the areas dedicated to the cabins, which can sleep a total of 12 guests across six cabins. Owners and their families will be able to enjoy the full-beam main deck from amidships to the bow. The large, comfortable VIP cabins are located on the starboard side and enjoy natural light and a view of the sea, in keeping with the nautical design trend that is moving in the direction of ever greater contact with nature.
The Main Deck, where three VIPs and the master cabin are located, is characterized by large windows whose uprights do not join the superstructure, thus providing great light and a breathtaking view of the sea. The two twin cabins are located on the lower deck. On the Main Deck there is also a panoramic salon, of limited dimensions, which has the peculiarity of opening onto a very large cockpit, equipped for moments of conviviality and dining, where there is also a swimming pool and large spaces dedicated to relaxation and sunbathing.
The Upper Deck houses a large panoramic skylounge, perfect for both conversation and dining for more formal occasions. The Sun Deck is partially shaded by the hard top and hosts a second swimming pool, a dining area and a living room. Particularly functional is the choice of a dumbwaiter that connects all the decks. From the Lower Deck, where the galley is located, the dumbwaiter goes up to the Upper Deck, facilitating the work of the crew and giving guests and owners more privacy. The crew has five cabins, a dinette adjacent to the spacious galley and other rooms. The captain has a cabin on the Upper Deck next to the helm station.
MY Acala: Performance
Featuring a steel hull, aluminium superstructure, 62,400l fuel tanks and powered by two efficient Caterpillar C32 Acert 746 kW engines, Acala has a range of over 5,000 nautical miles at a speed of 10 knots, and a top speed of 14 knots.
In other words, she has all the credentials of an explorer yacht that wants to reach the most remote and unspoilt areas of the oceans without haste
Cantiere delle Marche and custom production
“ The strategy to dedicate one slot per year to fully custom projects proved to be successful and extremely important for the technical growth of the shipyard – says CDM CEO Ennio Cecchini – Building these one-off vessels is a great opportunity for our team to learn something new and to work out of its comfort zone”. Acala’s imposing and elegant lines reveal harmonious and balanced geometries, providing generous and extremely luxurious spaces. But Acala is also expression of a refined luxury and perhaps for this very reason wonderfully intangible, resolving itself in the impalpable sensation of living without the oppression of time.
