The 37.18m/122' Sport Fisher yacht 'Atlantis' (ex. Mary P) was built by Trinity Yachts in the United States at their Gulfport, Mississippi shipyard. Her interior is styled by design house Bell Design Group and she was delivered to her owner in January 2009. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Douglas Sharp.

Trinity Yachts for Sale

Operating shipyards in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Gulfport in Mississippi, Trinity Yachts is an American luxury motor yacht builder constructing superyachts in aluminum and steel up to 403-feet (123m) in length.

Trinity Yachts was founded in 1988 by John Dane III, an Olympic sailor who went to work for Halter Marine with a vision to expand the shipyard’s operations into the luxury motor yacht sector. Halter Marine, which is a commercial and military shipyard in New Orleans, remains one of Trinity’s two facilities. In 2000, Trinity Yachts was acquired by Dane along with partners Billy Smith and Felix Sabates, owner of Victory Lane Enterprises.

Trinity’s specializations overall are: state-of-the-art construction, superior engineering, technology, refits, and the expertise of their staff. In addition to these core capabilities, Trinity can also offer customers examples of designs from their Victory Lane Series and the new Global Explorer Series of motor yachts, all produced by their in-house naval architects and engineers, and offered in various sizes, with customization to the owner’s specific requirements.

History of Trinity Yachts

Trinity Yachts’ roots lie in Halter Marine, the commercial and military shipyard in New Orleans, which is still one of the builder’s two facilities. In the 1970s, Olympic sailor John Dane III went to work for Halter Marine and founded Trinity Yachts in 1988, in order to expand the shipyard’s operations to encompass luxury motor yachts. Twelve years later, Dane joined forces with two business partners: Billy Smith and Felix Sabates.

The shipyard was highly successful, attracting owners from all over the world, including – thanks to Sabates’ influence – many involved in high-profile motorsports. In the early 2000’s, Trinity’s order book of superyacht projects was in the double digits. Despite the devastation wreaked on the New Orleans shipyard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which led to the opening of the Gulfport facility and the global economic downturn of 2008, Trinity Yachts continues to be one of the leading superyacht builders in the U.S. today.

In 2011, Trinity turned to its original roots to ride-out the global economic downturn – the company diversified and was able to secure contracts from the military, commercial offshore sector and commercial inland. These contracts enabled Trinity to retain most of their highly-skilled workforce and kept the operation going until contracts for new yachts picked up. They built six 90-foot, 45-knot fast patrol vessels for the State of Kuwait and a new generation of offshore supply vessels deployed in the Gulf of Mexico that included four, 302-foot by 64-foot diesel-electric, dual-fuel vessels.

Trinity has been recognized as one of the most elite builders of custom superyachts in the United States.

The Trinity collection

The average superyacht delivered by the yard is 160 feet (49m) in length and 545 GT. One of their most notable launches was the 164-foot (50m) motor yacht MINE GAMES in 2007; built with both with an aluminum hull and superstructure. Trinity’s in-house team developed the naval architecture for the yacht, which featured an elegant interior design by Patrick Knowles and, at least for a time, a personal submersible mounted to her watersports platform.

The quad-deck, 239.5- foot (73m) motor yacht NEW HORIZON, one of the largest luxury yachts to be built in the USA at the time, was delivered by Trinity in 2012. Similarly to MINE GAMES, her naval architecture was handled in house, while Evan Marshall created her interior styling. Built to ABS class in steel and aluminum, she was a significant milestone for the yard. She is MCA compliant, accommodates 12 guests in six staterooms and her twin 2,626hp Caterpillar engines give her a range of 6,000 nautical miles at 13 knots.

Currently, Trinity provides customers the ability to build a custom yacht to any design in any size, up to 400-feet, that fulfills their unique yachting desires. Extremely luxurious, each Trinity is a personal cruise ship and with every yacht they deliver.

DETAILS ​ What lurks beneath the waterline of Mary P is state of the stabilized art. This boat doesn't simply have motion control, it's got ocean control!

What's this launch tube protruding from the bow? Mary P takes tournament fishing seriously. If you can't raise a bigger fish, then sink the competition! Joking aside, this is forward scanning sonar. Here fishy-fishy! That hole in the bow contains a Quantum QT-120 bow thruster that churns a pair of 4-bladed counter rotating props. To give you a sense of scale, the tube for the thruster is approximately 2 feet in diameter!

Why have the exhaust exit under the hull? A pair of 2550 hp engines expel a lot of air. That same air can be used to create pressure under the hull, which adds lift that can aid in faster planing, as well as an aerated layer aft of the exit that can help offset drag.

Why is this pipe protruding out of the hull? Because it puts a new spin on stability! This is Quantum's MAGLift stabilizer which uses the Magnus Effect to induce roll. Say what? The Magnus effect is the phenomenon whereby fluid passing over a spinning object creates a cyclone of fluid around itself, which results in a force perpendicular to the line of motion. The system is designed to provide roll stabilization between 4 and 15 knots. Above that speed, the rotors return to the retracted position (shown here) to reduce drag. The system utilizes a spinning sheath, like an exterior tube, that rotates with waterflow.

The MAGLift system is particularly useful when traditional fin stabilizers would add too much drag, such as a hi-speed planing hull like Mary P. Think of it as a retractable fin system. The principle behind the MAGLift is elemental. A spinning object moving through a fluid departs from a straight path because of pressure differences that develop as a result of velocity changes above and below a spinning body. For example, when a ball is thrown, the turning ball drags some of the air around with it. The drag of the side of the ball turning into the air (into the direction the ball is travelling) retards the airflow, whereas on the other side the drag speeds up the airflow. Greater pressure on the side where the airflow is slowed down forces the ball in the direction of the low-pressure region on the opposite side, where a relative increase in airflow occurs.

Two 5.5" diameter Aquatech shafts are twisted by a pair of Cat 3512C (2550 hp) engines, reduced by a set of ZF gears, then exit the hull through Tides Marine shaft seals with 5-blade Nibral props as the final destination. Mary P's centerline skeg is slightly lower than the props, in case she has to beach the tide. Note the angle of the transom is not vertical, the rake helps in backing on a fish by letting some of the water go under the boat easier.

Trim tabs, right? There's more here than meets the eye. These tabs also work as stabilizers! That's right, these gyro controlled, hydraulically activated tabs add deflection (lift) as needed.

Note the offset placement of the rudders to better facilitate prop removal. The rudders are a symmetrical airfoil design and have a total of 35 degrees of deflection to counter about 100 feet of keel trying to follow a straight track. This transom design was specifically tested in the tank to make sure it would work. Also note the slight “V” when looking at the stern, acts like a shallow bow when going astern. There is an underwater camera in the transom as well as cameras on the outriggers, all to study fish in the baits or striking.

The biggest sportfish superyachts in the world

The next few years are shaping up well for the super-sportfish market with the Global Order Book reporting 26 projects currently on order or in build. Some special mentions include the Viking 90 flagship, a 24 metre sportfish chase boat underway at Vanquish and Royal Huisman 's mega 52 metre sportfish hull Project 406 which was announced in 2021. As we patiently await this new wave of uber-luxe fishing vessels, we take a look at the biggest already afloat...

1. Bad Company

The 43.9 metre sportfish yacht Bad Company (née Marlena ) was delivered in 1998 and was the largest sportfish in the world at the time. She changed ownership in 2013 and sent to Spain where she received a comprehensive refit and lengthened by six metres to her current length of 43.9 metres. ABS classed and MCA compliant, this all-aluminium superyacht accommodates up to 11 guests in a master suite, VIP, two doubles and one twin with a Pullman berth, all with LCD television screens and full en suite bathroom facilities.

2. Mea Culpa

Despite her size, Mea Culpa can reach a top speed of 23.5 knots thanks to a pair of 2735hp MTU 12V4000M90 diesel engines. The McMullen & Wing superyacht, designed by Jack Sarin , measures in at a hefty 42.28 metres. Mea Culpa can accommodate up to eight guests and six crew in her interiors, which have been designed by Marnell Corrao . She boasts a deck jacuzzi on board for post-fishing relaxation.  Mea Culpa was delivered in 2003.

3. Forty Love

Forty Love , formerly Don Elegante , began life in 1988 when she was commissioned by her first owner. According to BOAT Pro, the yacht ended up being reconstructed on an existing hull built by Westport in 1990 and was finally finished in 2002. Today, the 42 metre sportfish motor yacht sails under the name Forty Love and was the recipient of a two million-euro refit in 2020. Highlights include a main dining area with 360-degree views as well as a swimming platform with steps down into the water.

Lanakai , built by Yachting Developments , is the newest addition to the list of mega sportfish yachts. Delivered in 2017, the 39.5 metre superyacht is constructed entirely from carbon fibre to a design by Michael Peters  and can reach a top speed of 30 knots thanks to the power of two 3100.0hp MTU diesel engines. Spread over four decks, Lanaki can accommodate 10 guests and six crew. Her interiors, designed by Naylor Booth , sport an alliance of finely crafted American walnut joinery and muted fabrics. Lanakai boasts two saloons within her spacious interiors as well as a bar and stainless-steel aft deck barbecue for preparing the catch of the day.

5. Red Sapphire

Dutch shipyard Heesen , known today for its sporty steel and aluminium hulls, launched a series of sportfishing superyachts including Red Sapphire which splashed in 1999. The 39 metre is easy to spot with its distinct triangular form and a red stripe that runs the length of the yacht. Built for speed, she was capable of reaching speeds of 35 knots back in the day, powered by twin MTU 16V4000M90 engines.

6. Obsessions

The 38 metre Obsessions is the second Heesen built to make it into this round-up of supersized sportfish yachts. Launched in 1996, she arrived three years earlier than her sportfishing sister Red Sapphire . She was designed by Dutch studio Mulder Design and can sleep up to 10 guests.

The 37.19 metre sportfish Mary P was delivered in 2008 by Trinity Yachts . Built to satisfy the ultimate fisherman, this custom yacht incorporates a Simrad forward-looking sonar in the bow and a transom specifically designed to back down on fish at 10 knots. Twin 2,550hp Caterpillar diesel engines give her a top speed of 25 knots. Mary P was designed by Doug Sharp  together with Geoff Van Aller and is the only sportfish yacht to be built to ABS class. Her interiors have been designed by Judy Bell Davis and she can sleep up to eight guests and three crew below deck. On board amenities include a skylounge, bar and a formal dining area forward.

Boss was delivered by Dutch shipyard Feadship 1988 under the name Gallant Lady - the fifth in a series of yachts owned by the late Jim Moran. When she was launched she measured 35.35 metres in length but has since been extended to 36.27 metres. The yacht was refitted at Palmer Johnson in 1999 and can sleep up to 10 guests across four staterooms.

TRINITY YACHTS – Operating Since 1988

Trinity Yacht was founded in 1988 and was a leading luxury yacht building company based on the US Gulf Coast.

With operating shipyards in New Orleans, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Gulfport, the shipbuilder produced American luxury motor yachts from aluminum and steel.

The company was bought out by  Harvey Gulf International Marine , a New Orleans-based marine transport firm, in 2015. The company specializes in the offshore supply and support vessels. 

TRINITY YACHTS – A HISTORY

The roots of Trinity Yachts lie in the commercial and military shipyard Harvey Marine in New Orleans. In the 1970s, John Dane III, an Olympic sailor, went to work for Harvey Marine.

He later founded Trinity Yachts in 1988 to expand the shipyard’s operations into the luxury superyacht industry. 

Trinity was acquired by Dane in 2000, along with his partners Billy Sith and Felix Sabates, who was the owner of Victory Lane Enterprises.

After the merger with Victory Lane, the company began developing and designing superyachts with a futuristic and forward-thinking outlook, laying down the success for Trinity.

The shipyard was wildly successful and attracted many owners from around the world, largely thanks to Sabate’s influence. 

The yard debuted its first model named the 150’ Trideck M/Y Magic in 2001 at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which was applauded by the industry.

The success inspired the launch of another model a year later, the M/Y Marsha Key. After the success of the models, Trinity focussed on private orders from clients, offering a fully custom yacht tailored to their owner’s tastes.

The company became well known for always offering a professional approach and top quality contractions.

Hurricane Katrine wreaked havoc on the New Orleans-based shipyard, which led to the opening of the Gulfport facility in 2005. Despite the devastation from the hurricane, and the economic downturn of 2008, Trinity Yachts continued and thrived. 

In 2015, Harvey Gulf International Marine acquired Trinity Yachts. The company also acquired Trinity Yachts’ sister company, TY Offshore. TY Offshore develops and builds vessels for the offshore energy sector.

TRINITY YACHTS – NOTABLE LAUNCHES

Trinity produced several notable yachts throughout its lifetime such as the 58-meter UNBRIDLED yacht launched in 2009.

In 2007, MINE GAMES was delivered from the shipyard. The 50m superyacht was built with both an aluminum hull and superstructure.

Trinity’s in-house naval architecture team developed the yacht’s naval architecture, featuring elegant interior designs from Patrick Knowles. The yacht also featured a personal submersible mounted to her water sports platform.

NEW HORIZON, a 73m superyacht, was launched from Trinity. At the time, it was one of the largest luxury yachts built in the US and was delivered in 2012. She featured naval architecture from the in-house team, and Evan Marshall designed her interior styling.

EU legal adviser backs cancellation of EU-Morocco fishing agreement over disputed Western Sahara

RABAT, Morocco (AP) — A legal adviser to the European Union’s top court recommended Thursday that it annul an agreement with Morocco which would have allowed European boats to fish off the disputed Western Sahara ‘s coast.

The adviser said the agreement didn’t fully take into account the consequences on the rights of the people of the disputed territory “to benefit from the natural resources of the waters.”

The advocate general for the Court of Justice of the EU backed the court’s earlier ruling and recommended it reject appeals that sought to uphold Europe’s 2019 Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement with Morocco and send the case back to a lower court. The court in 2021 ruled in favor of the pro-independence Polisario Front that the agreement violated the rights of people in the disputed Western Sahara.

The agreement laid out where European vessels with Moroccan permits can fish and included Moroccan-controlled waters west of the disputed territory.

Advocate General Tamara Capeta’s recommendations concluded that the agreement failed “to treat the territory of Western Sahara as ‘separate and distinct’ from the territory of the Kingdom of Morocco.” But she said that Europe could negotiate with Morocco as the territory’s administering power on behalf of residents as long as they’re treated separately.

The court generally follows recommendations from appointed legal experts like Capeta and Thursday’s recommendations strike a blow against Morocco and the European authorities who appealed the ruling. The court will likely consider her recommendations and return with a ruling in the months ahead. Since the four-year accord expired in July, the court’s looming decision can shape future agreements, not any in effect.

Morocco was not party to the case, though trade associations for its farmers and fishermen backed the appeals. Mustapha Baitas, the country’s government spokesperson, underlined on Thursday that the recommendations were non-binding.

“The European Union should, by way of its institutions and member states, assume fully its responsibility for the preservation and protection of the partnership with Morocco in the face of provocations and political maneuvers,” he said, according to the state news agency MAP.

The 2019 Morocco-EU agreement was the latest of a series of accords dating back to 1988 and provided Morocco 208 million euros ($226 million) over four years in exchange for 128 fishing permits, mostly for Spanish boats.

The waters off of the disputed Western Sahara’s 690-mile (1,110-kilometer) coastline are rich in fish such as sardines and sardinella. Morocco also has fishing agreements with Japan and Russia.

The court case is among the ways in which the Polisario Front has pressed its sovereignty claims and put pressure on Morocco’s economic and foreign policy agenda. Its legal challenge was among half a dozen it filed in European Court regarding Moroccan exports and trade.

In a statement on Thursday, the Polisario Front cautioned that the advocate general’s determinations were merely recommendations but it applauded them as favorable, saying “in this legal battle that began a decade ago, great progress has been made.”

The agreement under scrutiny pertains to fishing rights off the northwest African coast but the heart of the issue is about land.

The status of the disputed Western Sahara has been a major sticking point between Morocco and the EU, which sees North African governments as critical partners in fighting terrorism and managing migration. The EU is Morocco’s biggest trade partner and foreign investor.

The territory has been fought over by Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario Front since Spain withdrew in 1975. Morocco considers the territory its southern provinces and governs all parts except a sliver near the Algerian border.

Thursday’s recommendations come as an increasing number of countries, including 15 EU members, shift their stances to back a Moroccan plan that would offer the resource-rich territory wide-ranging autonomy but not a referendum toward potential independence.

Though Spain is among the nations that now backs Morocco’s autonomy plan , Polisario Front representatives met with Canary Islands fishermen last summer hoping to strike an agreement to provide their own one-year licenses, Spanish media reported last July.

In linked decisions, Capeta also recommended the court not ban the import of tomatoes and melons from the disputed territory to France but require they be labeled as from Western Sahara, not Morocco.

She also recommended the court side with a European appeal challenging a ruling rejecting tariffs on Moroccan imports. She said extending a tariff agreement Europe made with Morocco on products from the disputed territory shouldn’t be seen as a violation of the Western Sahara’s right to self-determination.
