The coconut also represents life, in the sense that the Kunas of the San Blas Islands do not have access to water and therefore for centuries their survival was only possible thanks to rainwater and the precious coconuts. .

Therefore, for the Kuna people of the San Blas Islands of Panama; coconuts are considered a highly precious commodity.

Even the coconuts you can find on the desert islands of San Blas belong to someone and are collected regularly to be exchanged for other products.

Transfer from Panama to San Blas

How does it works?

Transfer is not complicated, but it needs organisation.

It takes 3 hours and it needs a land transportation and a water taxi too, to get to your destination. There are timetables and rules to follow. Starting with the vehicle. only 4×4 are authorized to circulate on the territory of Guna Yala.

There are also schedules to respect for the water taxis. Departures are only at 8h/8h30am. It is for this reason that your taxi will pick you up at 5am, ”ready to go” at your hotel in Panama.

if you don’t want to wake up before the sun comes up, it is also possible to rent a cabana in an ecolodge a stone’s throw from the territory of San Blas:

Let me introduce you to one of the few feminist societies of this planet: San Blas. Kuna people is at the beginning a mix between Mayas and Indians of Amazonia. With the arrival of the European inviders they moved from the jungle to the San-Blas islands where they established themselves. They are a matriarchal society. It s may be cliche but it s a fact than their women society is a lot more open minded than the classical patriarchal one. First of all, people of Guna Yala have no idea about what is feminism or matriarchal society, they just live like that since ever. Women never had to fight to have a place and live in real harmony with Male and nature. Women are free to make up, shave or not, wear traditional clothes or not, and breastfeeding where they want because the traditional way of life Kuna, protect them from the sexualization of the women body.

KUNA THIRD GENDER

As open minded persons, the San-Blas people also let the kids free to choose their gender without any pression. So it’s common to see the ones that the Kunas call Omeggid,  what literally mean “like a woman” in the village. This men wear clothes, act and work like the other women of the kuna community. Most of the time male become female, the inverse is really rare, but when it happens, the Guna Yala community accept it the same way. What we call ‘third gender’ is just completely normal in San-Blas. When a boy show tendencies to act as a women, the family naturally accepts and allows him to grow up as he want. Most of the time they do sewing Molas as work and as the others women, they take decisions. You have to understand that It’s not about tolerance, cause tolerance mean that something is not normal, it’s just about being who you wanted to be. And it’s interesting to see this from our American and European point of view, because the Guna Yala people live it really naturally, when the third gender always bring polemics in our societies. This acceptation is a specificity of San Blas and it’s not the same in Panama.

OPEN MINDED KUNA RELIGION

As the Albinism (San Blas is the highest rate of albinism in the world and albinos people are sacred for Kunas), the third gender also have a specific place in Guna mythology, Wigudum was a leader and also one of the three children of God, and was half men and half women. Hunting the day time and sawing the evening. It’s important to understand that for GunaYala people Fishing and hunting is considered as the same value than cooking sewing or looking after children: the Gunas do not consider what we call women’s labour to be less important and it’s an important step for equality. ANCESTRAL GUNA YALA WAY OF LIFE

So, the women decide for almost everything but are rarely chef or politics. They let this kind of work to men. They prefer working the extraordinary art of sewing Molas (that also, what bring the better income in the family) when a man become an husband, he move from his parent house to the one of his wife, most of the time the men are fisherman and sale their fishing to the tourists to bring back money home, even before the arrival of tourism they were doing the same with pirates and other boats coming from europe. When the couple have their first childs, they raise them in respect of tradition and if the baby is a little girl the whole village make a big ceremony to celebrate the venue of a new women in the community, an other really important Kuna ceremony is also made when a girl pass from teenager to adult, and at the death of the mother, the heritage of land and house will be share between the daughters of the couple. The best trip of our lives!

Elaine was very careful and willing, showing a lot of knowledge about the local culture and spots.

We were hosted in an amazing catamaran, very comfortable and the bedroom had a private bathroom just for us. 

At the outside area we enjoyed a delicious glass of wine with a beautiful sunset. 

The captain was a close friend to the Kunas, which helped us to know their culture and interact with them. 

The food was one of the highlights os the trip, always very well prepared, we tasted the best lobsters of our lives! 

And San Blás is the moss amazing place we’ve ever been to, paradisiac islands, sailing, snorkel... too many fun thing that couldn’t even fit here. Thank you, for sure we are coming back!

We spent 6 nights at the Pura Vida II sailboat with the amazing hosts Elaine and Peter.

Everything worked out perfectly, starting with the transfer from Panama City! The boat was neat and clean, comfortable and fully equipped for a safe sailing.

Elaine is a very talented and creative chef, turning all the meals into a special occasion and different from each other.

Captain Peter took us to the best spots in San Blás and followed us during the snorkeling at the coral reefs. We are already planning with our kids to go back and spend another week in paradise!

There will be kayaks or paddleboards, or both, available to explore around islands and reefs. The crew will take your cameras to the islands in the dinghy for pictures. Whenever you request, they will fill up an icebox with drinks and take them to the beach where they will also set up hammocks. On the boat, there will also be shaded areas provided, hammocks set up, or sunbathing areas available. 

Sometimes, you will have lunch or dinner on the islands where you can BBQ over a coconut husk fire. On some islands where few families live, you will have a chance to buy coconuts, have them opened for you. You will enjoy a stroll on the beach while sipping your fresh coconut. You will meet Guna families and experience the serenity they live in, harmonizing with nature. You will also have a chance to see and buy their colorful molas. You may even participate in grating the coconut to make coconut rice that will accompany your lunch or dinner. You will spend your nights enjoying the company of your group or hearing fascinating stories from your captain under millions of stars. If time is right, you will be memerized watching a moonrise. Sometimes you enjoy a bonfire gathering on the beach with other travelers. The next day, you will just have to do it all over again.

HOW TO GET TO SAN BLAS:

By car + water taxi.

It's a 2.5 to 3-hour SUV ride followed by a 30 to 45-minute water taxi ride, costing $75 one way or $150 round trip. After confirming your booking, a representative from a licensed transportation company will contact you to coordinate your land transfer. On the day of your trip, an SUV will pick you up between 5:00 and 5:30 am. The journey offers a scenic route through the jungle, with the SUV leaving the city and entering Guna territory. Upon arrival in San Blas, a water taxi (lancha) will be ready to take you to the outer islands where your sailboat awaits. You'll reach the sailboat between 9:30 and 10:30 am, starting your adventure in paradise. In the case of shared charters, the boat may be in the most secluded yet the most beautiful area, which is a little further than the arrival point, on the day of your arrival. In such a case, the lancha ride may be longer, with arrival on the boat at about 11:30. However, the view and serenity you will be greeted with will make the extra way worth it. At the trip's end, the lancha will pick you up the next morning, retracing the route in reverse and getting you back to the city by noon.

Small charter planes can be arranged with a local airline, starting at around $500 for a 3-passenger plane. The ride lasts 40 minutes, and upon arrival at the airstrip in San Blas, your captain will be waiting for you. .The boat will be anchored next to the island as well.

Best place to disconnect. We're told to bring snacks because meals were small. However we got three huge, sufficient meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. The locals are very welcoming and nice. They'll make sure you have a grest experience. I stayed two nights and three days. They took us snorkeling with rays and nurse sharks. All safe! I would highly recommend this experience.
