46 metre Feadship motor yacht Lady May, formerly known as Como and built for New Zealand businessman and former racing driver Neville Crichton

Lady May: Inside the 46m Feadship superyacht

Update : This superyacht was named Como when launched but has since been sold and renamed Lady May . BOAT International was invited on board for a first look at Como in 2014, when she was owned by New Zealand businessman and former racecar driver Neville Crichton.

I first encountered Neville Crichton more than 20 years ago while researching an article about a boat built for him in his home country, New Zealand. I wrote then: ‘Crichton has a habit of thinking about ways to improve things. Race cars, business ventures, sailboats – it makes no difference. He restlessly turns things over in his mind looking for ways to optimise everything in his life.’

Some things never change. As I tour Neville Crichton’s motor yacht,  Como , a 46 metre Feadship, project manager Ludo van der Lelie points out functional details, storage spaces and crew area features resulting from Neville Crichton’s trips to the yard during construction. It is classic Crichton-isation.

Neville Crichton also relied on the talents of the same design team, Dubois Naval Architects, which has designed eight yachts for this owner, and the interior design firm Redman Whiteley Dixon (RWD).

Como : an unexpected yacht for Feadship

As logical as  Como  is in the evolution of Neville Crichton’s taste and yachting experience, she is an unexpected yacht for Feadship. It’s been 16 years since either the Van Lent or De Vries yard built a raised pilothouse motor yacht, and few are the all-aluminium motor yachts with a Feadship badge. Yet there is no denying the quality and diversity of Feadship’s aluminium yachts,  Sussurro ,  Venus  and  Gallant Lady  among them. Aluminium is the perfect material for semi-displacement yacht designs where speed and/or efficiency and shallow draught are more important than volume.

By its very nature, the raised pilothouse shines in terms of visibility, access to the working deck, crew circulation and crew quarters, and stability for those on watch. Access to the bridge is easy and unintimidating for owner and guests. Perhaps the most significant element of a raised pilothouse motor yacht is that its low profile obviates the necessity for foldout terraces or transforming transoms to allow passengers to have a relationship with the ocean.

Dubois has been working with this style since 2003, and Alloy Yachts has built five to his designs, including one for Neville Crichton, the 2007 41.4 metre  Como . But with this new boat, Dubois has drawn a race car enthusiast’s motor yacht: a 19-knot head-turner that looks like she’s always ready to run. Her silver metallic paint dazzles, and the glass that goes on forever is as perfectly undistorted as the windscreen of any of the cars Neville Crichton used to race, except much of this glass goes up and down at the touch of a button.

Re-designing the new  Como

Neville Crichton also loves projects. According to Malcolm McKeon, formerly with Dubois Naval Architects, Crichton began talking about a new motor yacht when the last one was barely a year-and-a-half old.

‘When I began thinking about a new boat,’ Neville Crichton says, ‘my idea was just a larger version of [the 41.4 metre]  Como , but it was the height of the global financial crisis and even though Australia came through that pretty well, I just wasn’t excited,’ Neville Crichton says. The new drawing lay untouched. ‘Then [about 12 months later] Ed and Malcolm went back to the drawing board and came up with something that really worked for my lifestyle.’

‘Instead of stretching the current  Como , we went back to scratch, back to first principles,’ says Dubois. ‘Create a seaworthy hull that can be easily driven to 19 knots with conventional power.’

By 2011, Dubois Naval Architects had come up with the package for a two-and-a-half deck, 46 metre boat, that had a more upright bow, and a lobster boat or whale back sheer-line, to supply a higher bow forward but low bulwarks next to the main saloon. Neville Crichton became enthused. The Dubois office proceeded with the engineering and tank tested the hull model for speed potential and spray at the bow. The bow has a rake of 16 per cent compared to the 40 degrees of other motor yachts off the Dubois boards. ‘We were worried about not having much bow overhang, so we created a massive knuckle to turn away the spray and widen the working area forward,’ explains Dubois.

‘At about the same time, [Feadship director] Henk de Vries approached me about building a new boat. I had the design package and frankly it appealed to my long-time desire to own a Feadship,’ Neville Crichton says. ‘At the beginning they were cautious, because it was the first time De Vries was working without drawings from De Voogt, and they had to build a relationship with my team. As the process progressed, this relationship developed very well, in particular through Malcolm working as a conduit for the communications.’

The superyacht designed for entertaining

Both Dubois and Justin Redman from RWD concur that apart from performance, the main driver of any design for Neville Crichton is its ability to support entertaining. ‘Neville is the consummate gracious host. That’s one of the reasons the flybridge works for him because you can have a lot of people together in an open environment,’ says Dubois. ‘Only this time a bit more grand,’ adds McKeon. ‘On the last  Como , the weather enclosure for the flybridge was plastic. This time, he wanted glass but we had to be able to remove it if he wanted the breeze.’

As a result, says Van der Lelie, the glass surround protecting the front of the flybridge is in three large distortion-free sections, each curved and mounted on a lift mechanism, and flat side panels to semi-enclose the space at the touch of a button. The flybridge hardtop contains fan coil units to distribute heated or cooled air so that it functions like an all-season outdoor living room with a large bar, dining space and large pieces of moveable furniture.

‘The boat is very liveable. The design means that we have enjoyed the effect of being outside but inside at the same time,’ says Neville Crichton.  Como ’s coming out party was none other than trackside as one of the yachts at the Monaco Grand Prix . ‘We had an absolute ball. We could look at part of the track [while enjoying] all the comforts of the boat. The combination of the position and the fact that we could see the jumbo screen, as well as the TV screens on the boat meant, from a spectating point of view, it was like being in a prime grandstand. At the same time, I could entertain 50 people on the flybridge comfortably. The boat is the centre of attention and allows me to entertain many friends. It is, without doubt, the best way to attend the Monaco Grand Prix.’

Responding to the brief that the boat must be a step up, Redman emphasised a key feature. ‘Often on these boats, the stairs are small and simple. We wanted to give the stairs more importance as you aren’t just going up to the deck, you are going to what, in essence, is another room, and the stairs down lead to really nice guest suites. We thought that since the themes of this boat are light and line height, the staircase should participate in that with openness and reflective surfaces. The light just bounces around from the white Thassos marble treads onto the polished stainless steel, and it’s brilliant. The stairs look twice as large and impressive as they are, adding to the illusion of even more height.’

Indeed, from the aft end of the saloon, they create a trompe l’oeil effect. The mirror-polished stainless steel runs up the stair surround and flows out across the saloon overhead as well to pull a visitor’s eye upward.

Dubois and RWD’s experience with sailing yachts had the yard wringing every bit of use out of the space between decks, rerouting plumbing stacks, HVAC and conduits to create maximum ceiling height and nearly full-height saloon windows.

Como  benefits from Feadship's glass technology research

Everywhere in the boat the potential for outside views is maximised, and this reaches its apex in the owner’s suite, where dark glass wraps the superstructure port and starboard and sweeps around the front, creating a room with substantial views. Of course, given the high bow and bulwarks mandated for dryness and seakeeping, the effect would have been lost except to those standing.

‘Our first thought was to cut a hole in the bulwarks so you could see out if you were sitting or lying in bed – and then we realised: “Right, how do we keep the water out?”’ says McKeon.

The answer was a six metre-long window in the bulwarks on either side. The designers wanted the look of an unbroken panel of glass flush with the metal. Not only did MCA and Lloyd’s impose tough restrictions on wave-impact resistance of those exterior windows, they insisted on significantly more aluminium stiffening the flange that surrounds the opening. Although Feadship has put extensive R&D into glass as a structural material beginning with its own X-Stream concept in 2006, the approvals process for tempered and chemically hardened and bonded glass is a shattering experience – literally.

‘The classification society requires extensive engineering studies on the glass panels, and even when they approve the plans, during construction all the panels have to be tested,’ says Van der Lelie. The Lloyd’s process requires that full-size samples of the pieces to be installed be presented for testing not just one, but multiple copies. In this case, the test was a 13-pound (5.9 kilo) weight dropped three times from a height of 26 feet (7.9 metres). Typically, if the sample passes the design specification, they will continue increasing the impact until the piece fails. ‘We did three tests of each of the wheelhouse panels and when those were successful, we only had to test the side pieces twice. It was a good thing the glass passed because we had already faired the sides of the hull to the thickness a 3D scan showed us was required for this glass to set flush with the metal when painted. If the glass had to been remade or the aluminium surround reconfigured, we would not have delivered on time.’

Belowdecks, the four guest suites each have one oversized, fixed, hull portlight lined up with the guest beds placed athwartships, which the surveyors told Feadship won’t be approved in the future. ‘That’s a shame because they make really great views. You can’t get around it by installing storm shutters for offshore passages because the storm shutters would just be too big and heavy for the crew to handle,’ says Van der Lelie.

The interior styling of  Como

Blurring the indoors and outdoors also extends to the saloon. ‘In most boats the saloon just doesn’t get used,’ says Redman. ‘The owner rarely uses the interior dining area so the exercise was to make the saloon space multifunctional, opening it up to the aft deck or making it cosy for watching a movie. The key element is the bar, which spills over from the saloon to the aft deck. When entertaining, the aft glass doors and the window that bisects the bar disappear, making one large social space, connected by adjacent stairs to the upper deck, which now has equal stature.’

The snug spot is the circular sofa in the centre of the saloon. Often, when you enter a saloon from the stern you see the back of a piece of furniture. On  Como , the entire seating area, including the coffee table and carpet, can rotate 360 degrees on a cushion of compressed air to face the aft deck, the bar, the 82-inch TV, the dining table or anywhere else.

Como ’s décor is overtly masculine and monochromatic. The scrubbed oak joinery that forms a backdrop for the owner and guest spaces contrasts with natural fabrics, glossy Macassar cabinets and details and stainless steel trim. RWD sourced the black-and-white photos that, along with a large piece of carved New Zealand jade, serve as the sole artwork aboard the yacht.

Como : a sophisticated superyacht

Neville Crichton pushed for optimum performance from a pair of Caterpillar C32s, the largest engines he would allow. After controlling interior weight as much as possible yet still installing the largest tender the stern garage could accommodate, meeting the contract speed solution came down to the performance of two small metal bars on the bottom of the hull just forward of the transom. ‘They function like interceptors, but they aren’t adjustable,’ says McKeon. ‘They are drilled and tapped into place and deflect just enough water when the yacht is going 10 knots or better to keep the stern from squatting and creating drag.’ Running at its 16-knot cruising speed,  Como  burns 380 litres per hour.

‘We are delighted to make our mark once again in this size range,’ comments de Vries. ‘Feadship is not only about very large superyachts: we also pride ourselves on creating exceptionally well-honed objects on a more human scale. We have used the very latest technologies and developments to push the window – and the windows – on what is surely the most sophisticated 46 metre superyacht in the world today.’

M/Y Lady May

Feadship / 2014/ 46m.

Lady May is a head turning semi-displacement yacht that was constructed by Feadship in 2014. Her exterior was designed by the famed Dubois Naval Architects which was established by the British yachting pioneer Ed Dubois . Lady May won Dubois the award in both the exterior design and naval architecture categories, at the Showboats Design Awards in 2015. Her interior was designed by Redman Whiteley Dixon (RWD), and here too, Lady May was the winner in the “interior design” category, at the 2015 award ceremony. She also won the 2015 World Superyacht Awards 2015 in the category of “Semi-displacement or Planing Motor Two Deck Motor Yacht – 38m and above”. The designers state that the yacht was designed for “entertaining” and consequently, spaces are flexible and boundaries can be easily modified (by opening sliding glass doors and windows). The boundaries between the yacht interior and her exterior spaces, are highly blurred. The yacht includes two bar areas, on each of the decks, so entertainment is clearly a central aspect element in the vessel’s design. Lady May can accommodate up to 10 guests in five cabins; a master suite, two double cabins and two twin cabins.  Lady May is equipped with advanced underway stabilizers that ensure comfortable reduced-roll while underway.

Miss augusta luxury yacht to set sail from augusta, mo this fall.

The newest addition to Missouri Wine Country will soon be the Miss Augusta, a 96-foot luxury yacht offering sightseeing tours, private events, and a connection to the area by water come Fall 2021, all part of the massive $100 million investment by the Hoffmanns into the Augusta region.

In a scheduled meeting with St. Charles County on Monday evening, the County Council unanimously approved a joint project to expand and build an additional 120 feet of dock space for use at the Klondike Park Boat Ramp just 3 miles East of Augusta on highway 94. The county will maintain ownership of the dock and the Hoffmann Family of Companies will pay a per person fee to the county parks department for usage. Offsite parking will be established to not impede on the usage of the boat ramp. The existing network of trolleys put in place by the Hoffmanns will shuttle patrons from parking to the boat dock and then into the town and wineries.

Proposed plans for a paddle boat and dock are still in the works in Washington, MO which would offer tours and transportation to and from Washington to Augusta, criss-crossing with the Miss Augusta on the Missouri River with a possibility of going up to St. Charles as well. “Augusta and St. Charles are so based on the waterfront, that’s how the area was built. So, it’s really exciting to showcase that portion. There’s nothing on the water right now, so you’ll be able to take tours up and down to Washington and to St. Charles and back. We’re just really excited to showcase the area,” says Jenny Gezella, President of the Naples Princess and head of boating operations for the Hoffmann Family of Companies.

The Hoffmanns are no strangers to operating on the water. In total, the Hoffmann Family of Companies operates 9 boats and 11 operations throughout the United States from Washington State and California to Wisconsin, Tennessee and Florida. “It’s going to bring a whole new way to see and experience Missouri wine country. We can’t wait to start cruising the river and offering our wines on board,” said David Hoffmann, founder Hoffmann Family of Companies. The Miss Augusta intends to start operations this fall with the goal of its first cruise before the winter.

Miss Emily features a semi-displacement hull to provide exceptional seakeeping and smooth cruising, features known to the family of Broward motor yachts. She offers a day charter capacity of 12 and overnight guest accommodation for up to 6 in 3 suites comprising a master, a VIP cabin, and a twin cabin. There are 4 beds in total, including 1 king, 1 queen, and 2 singles. She is also capable of carrying up to 3 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury cruise.

Broward yachts is a truly unique brand of shipbuilder dating back to the 1940s. In 1954, during the Korean War, Broward Marine built 173-foot minesweepers for the United States Navy and 144-foot wooden minesweepers for the Royal Dutch Navy under a NATO contract. With the close of the war, Broward Marine went on to build some of the largest motor yachts in the world at the time. Interestingly, Broward yachts were the first to introduce the concept of a spacious family galley, a feature virtually unfound in European yachts. As an exclusively custom yacht builder, no two Broward yachts have ever been the same.

Miss Emily is powered by twin 1050hp Detroit Diesel engines and two generators. There is a formal dining table for 8 in the open-concept main salon and outdoor dining for 10 on the covered aft deck. The flybridge has new cushions and a top-of-the-line JL Audio sound system ready to be paired to your phone or device.

The week we spent on the Miss Summer was the trip of a lifetime. Lina and Per were amazing hosts with an impeccable boat. They were professional, welcoming, informative and made the trip unforgettable. Lina’s food was fabulous and I still can’t believe she can produce such tasty and beautifully presented food in such a small galley, she is truly talented. She also makes an amazing Pain killer! I would recommend utilizing the private water taxi to get to them vs. the ferry from St Thomas which was both late and a little scary plus they clear customs for you. Thank you again guys for making my 50th birthday trip unforgettable - Thank you for an amazing week – Team Pterodactyls - - We felt “no pain” for seven days! - - Best trip ever… Thanks – Team Toga @Foxys -

We had a wonderful vacation with Lina and Per on the Miss Summer! Per is a master sailor (so is Lina!), and they know the BVIs very well – everything from the best snorkeling spots to the best beach bars! And Lina’s meals were delicious and healthy! They pampered us during our entire trip. We are already looking forward to chartering with them again soon!

Dear Per & Lina We can´t thank you enough for touring us around BVI in such grand style. It has been a trip of a lifetime! Truth told, this expressed little... You and Per taught us not only about sailing, but about life, choices, and how to make the most of what we have. I cannot thank you enough, Abby

Swimming with the sea turtles and snorkeling the sea caves.

I don´t think I can say enough good things about our experience. We met Lina & Per just outside of Tortola pier park for a private day sailing with a party of 12, including some children as young as 4. Lina & Per were/are super friendly and accommodating. They provided a delicious light lunch, snacks, and lots of different beverages. The Painkiller drinks for adults were really tasty. The provided snorkel gear looked brand new, and was top quality equipment. The boat was also looked brand new, was very nice, and had plenty of space. We saw lots of turtles, corals, tropical fish, and sea caves. Lina & Per gave us a perfect day of snorkeling and fun. Skip the other cruise ship excursions (we arrived on Norwegian) and book with Lina and Per!

A memory for life

We went on a private tour to the Baths. Over all a super nice experience. The ´stone caves´ at the Baths was fun to explore and we also made a stop on the way at Cooper Island, to do some snorkeling. We brought our own snorkeling gear, but the snorkels and fins offered on the boat was good. The boat was really nice. Thumbs up for the food and drinks. We can highly recommend going with captain Swede and Lina, they made this tour fantastic, thank you! We will come BACK

The Best in the BVI!

Lina and Per welcomed us on a day adventure, escaping the world and rejuvenated our bodies and minds with what is important about life. This is THE private charter to take in the BVI. The boat is beautiful, they took us to the best places for snorkeling and fun. Lina made us a scrumptious lunch and Per was full of stories and information. Try Lina’s sticky cake (Swedish Name?) and the their home made pain killer with extra nutmeg! Lina and Per bring a Scandinavian flair and experience to your BVI holiday. We’ll be back – not for a day – BUT for a week!!!! Thanks for the memories, talks and ideas…. Until next time

“Miss Scarlett” - a 1929 52-Foot Motor Yacht from the Roaring 20’s

By: rick casali.

For two years, I have wanted to write an article for my column on the 52-foot motor yacht Miss Scarlet t. Thanks to owner Rob Reddick, my bucket list wish came true last fall. Rob invited me over to his boathouse in Alexandria Bay, NY, to get the details and to take photos of this lovely classic boat. Before our meeting, I was not sure if this was a vessel built during the Great Gatsby era, or if it was a retro yacht designed to look vintage. As I soon found out, Miss Scarlett is approaching the 100-year mark. She was built in 1929, but so much of her is modern.

Rob and his first mate, Dana, were getting Miss Scarlett prepared to cruise to Kingston, ON, for the weekend. As I got out of my center console, several boat cleaners were stepping off Miss Scarlet t. She was gleaming in the bright fall sunlight. What a treat to finally tour this fantastic classic and ‘grande dame’ of the Thousand Islands. At first, her size is deceiving. Inside the custom boathouse that Rob had built just for the 52-footer, it’s hard to judge her overall size. But out in the open, it’s apparent that her length is more than average for the St. Lawrence River. With a relatively low profile, the pilothouse motor yacht is pleasing to the eye. By today’s standards, her 12-foot beam is very skinny. Today, most motor yachts of this length have beams from 15 to 17 feet. Yet, for Miss Scarlett , her lean beam is perfect.

miss may yacht

When Rob told me that the yacht was built in 1929, this confirmed that she was of wood construction. The yacht was built at the Gidley Boat Company in Georgian Bay, ON. She is cedar planked over white oak ribs and frame. Much of the cedar planking and white oak ribs were replaced in an ambitious restoration. In fact, the original 1 7/8-inch ribs were replaced with a combination of 2 and 5 ½-inch laminated oak ribs.  So, the hull is much stronger.

The yacht went through an extensive refit that took over seven years and cost an estimated two million. This huge effort was financed by her owner at the time, Scarlett Lynne Hindman, who was the heiress to the Toronto Star newspaper. Her family called her Lynne instead of Scarlett, which she preferred. It was an easy choice for Ms. Hindman to change the name of the 52-footer from Mona to Scarlett .  As a fan of the film "Gone With the Wind", Lynne carried out that motif in the color scheme of the vessel. Dark green and burgundy curtains and cushions on board match Scarlett’s dress in the movie. Lynne is a horsewoman who knew little about yachts, but nonetheless, initiated an amazing restoration. She had the vessel brought to her barn on her horse farm in Midland, ON, for the refit. Rob told me that the wood steering wheel, signal canon, compass, and brass bell are the only original parts on the yacht.

At the beginning, the team thought that the refit project would be minimal, but examination of the hull revealed extensive deterioration of the yacht. Eventually, the workers not only replaced much of the planking and ribs, but also used the West System to seal the hull in epoxy, using the vacuum bagging process. Even the inside of the hull was encapsulated in epoxy. Much of the original decking and cabins were redesigned and replaced. The hull, machinery, wiring, and safety systems were brought up to current ABYC standards, so that the vessel could be chartered in U. S. waters. This was no easy achievement for a 1929 yacht. Years into the project, the team was fortunate to find some of the last matched grain Honduran mahogany in North America, for this ambitious project. The prized wood was found in New York City.  The interior paneling is done in this rich mahogany with matching grain.  The wood joinery is a work of art in my view. The handmade hardware for the numerous opening windows and doors are custom chrome fittings, where expense was not a consideration. The cost just to re-chrome the handmade hardware is listed at $30,000.

Miss Scarlett is a single screw vessel. Originally, Rob believes that the yacht had a gasoline engine. She is currently powered by a Detroit 6-71 diesel rated at 220 horsepower that yields a cruise speed of a leisurely 8 miles per hour. Top speed with full throttle is 14 miles per hour where she pulls a large stern wave. Being a full displacement hull design, not much horsepower is necessary to move her. With her narrow beam of 12 feet and long waterline length, Miss Scarlet t is easily driven. She has a round or soft chine, so she is prone to roll in a beam sea or in large wakes from powerboats. Rob said that he prefers to take large waves and wakes bow first to minimize rolling. And Miss Scarlett has a “barn door” sized rudder to aid maneuvering.

Rob had to make quite an adjustment with Miss Scarlett . His other boats were all go-fast vessels with multiple engines. To go from 40-plus miles per hour to just 8 took some change in attitude and habits. Trips had to be planned out well in advance, and allowance made for the hours needed to get to destinations. But Rob remarked “I started seeing sights and homes on the River that I had missed in the past.” He seems much more relaxed in his life with Miss Scarlett.  Slowing down was a lifestyle change that he welcomed and needed.

The layout of the 52 is unique. The galley is up forward in the bow section. It has a propane range and oven, refrigerated sea chest, microwave, and abundant storage space. Again, the joinery work and detailing are world-class making one think that the boat is a floating piece of fine furniture. The time and money to build out this level of quality is beyond most boaters' budgets. Above the galley is a lovely butterfly hatch that lets in lots of light and air. In the forepeak is a padded seat that Rob calls the “queen’s throne.”

miss may yacht

Aft of the galley is the dining salon with a U-shaped dinette that can seat six to eight. The mahogany table can be lowered electrically to form a cocktail-height table or lowered further into a queen berth for guests. Moving aft and up three steps is the wheelhouse. It has wing doors on both port and starboard. The helm is in the middle of the vessel with good views forward. A vintage varnished wood steering wheel is mounted to the helm station with engine gauges, controls, and a classic, large compass. You’ll also find a modern Garmin GPS/plotter, an autopilot, and radar. There is a settee aft of the helm for passengers to sit and watch River views over the long bow. A handy bar refrigerator is under the settee. The cabin floors are made in lovely pecan wood with thin strips of mahogany. The light flooring is a nice offset to the dark mahogany bulkhead paneling.

Moving aft, down three steps, is the passageway with an access door to the engine room, and a guest stateroom with a bunk bed and lots of storage. The guest head is aft of the bunk beds. All the way aft is the owners’ stateroom, with a queen berth athwartship facing to port. Again, there is abundant mahogany paneling, lockers, and drawers plus a make-up table for the ladies. The ensuite head is nice in size and has a separate shower stall. Lastly, the owners’ cabin has a companionway and ladder to the lazarette and stern spaces.

miss may yacht

Even in the boathouse, Miss Scarlett is bright and cheerful. The numerous opening windows, ports, and hatches bring in lots of sunshine, air, and light. On deck, there is an anchor windlass and chrome signal cannon mounted to the foredeck. (Is the latter for fending off River pirates?) The bow thruster helps to maneuver the 52- footer for docking. The exterior decks are of natural teak. Aft of the wheelhouse is a spacious raised deck for lounging, entertaining, and taking meals alfresco. There are six deck chairs and a cocktail table at this station. All the way aft is a lazarette, swim platform, and swim ladder. On the transom is a custom, beefy, davit system for the classic wooden dinghy. Rob and Dana row their dogs ashore in the tender. The vessel is equipped with a 12 kWh generator, shore power,  and an ESPAR diesel heating system. The radar mast can be lowered to enter the boathouse or to navigate under low bridges. Her entire electrical system was upgraded to modern standards. The engine room has about seven feet of head room.

Rob Reddick purchased Miss Scarlett in 2010. When he bought her, the hull was painted white. He entered her in the Antique Boat Museum annual show, as well as shows in Montreal, QC, and Alexandria Bay, NY.   Miss Scarlett won the People’s Award at the two shows in the Thousand Islands.

Eventually, Rob changed the hull color to a dark green, which goes well with the varnished trim on the exterior. The new color suits this 1929 classic quite well, in my view. Wherever Miss Scarlett goes, her good looks and classic design draw attention and raves. Rob and Dana were planning to cruise to Kingston for the weekend. On board Miss Scarlett , they have all the comforts of home. But what else would one expect on the ‘Grande Dame’ of the Thousand Islands?

miss may yacht

When not in use, Miss Scarlett has an elegant boathouse that Rob had built for the 52-foot classic. This protects the elegant yacht from sun and rain. Rob’s home is on the US mainland and faces Cherry Island. In the off season, the yacht goes to a large storage barn at Swan Bay Resort, which Rob owns and operates. There, she can receive touch up for her exterior varnish and other needed maintenance. The vessel came with a yard trailer capable of safely transporting her 52 foot length.

Obviously, this 1929-era yacht is for the discriminating boater who can appreciate the pedigree and investment required to update and preserve this elegant vessel. Someone once said, “Life is too short to own an ugly boat.” Rob Reddick does not have this worry!

Here are the top 10 cities for those who love to read.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Lawn Love has announced its list of the best cities for book lovers — and some may seem unusual.

Reading has always been a favorite hobby for many — but within the last few years, with the rise of the social media trend #BookTok, many newbies have joined the reading community.

Lawn Love has announced its list of the best cities for book lovers — and some may seem unusual.

The lawn care service company created the list by looking at four categories: access to bookstores, libraries, book clubs, and rare and antique bookstores.

Within each category, sub-metrics were evaluated.

Those included bookstores per square mile, number of public libraries, number of antique and rare bookstores and number of book clubs.

Counting down from 10 to 1, see if your favorite U.S. city made this top group for book lovers.

10. San Diego, California

9. portland, oregon, 8. washington, dc, 7. houston, texas, 6. philadelphia, pennsylvania.

People participate in an early morning reading party hosted by Reading Rhythms and Edge on World Book and Copyright Day at Edge at Hudson Yards on April 23, 2024.

5. Seattle, Washington

4. los angeles, california, 3. san francisco, california, 2. chicago, illinois, 1. new york, new york.

New York City ranked first in the best cities for book lovers.

That’s thanks to its high number of bookstores (571), independent bookstores, public libraries (225), antique and rare bookstores, and publishing houses (134).

Lawn Love noted that while large cities dominate the top 25 spots of the ranking, college towns such as New Haven, Connecticut — home to Yale University — ranked No. 41.

Cambridge, Massachusetts — home to Harvard University — ranked No. 51 as well.

People pick up free books from Penguin Random House after participating in th early morning reading party at the Edge on April 23, 2024 in Manhattan.
