A Monaco yacht rental vacation offers a mesmerizing selection of things to see and do. Here is our top picks of some of the most outstanding:
Don't Miss:
- Monte Carlo Casino : Founded in 1863, the casino is arguably one of the most iconic buildings on the French Riviera, and has been immortalised on the silver screen several times over, from the likes of James Bond, Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca and Ocean's Eleven to name a few.
- Salle Garnier opera house : Added in 1878 to offer additional entertainment to visitors, adjacent to the casino the exquisite Belle Époque facade was designed by Charles Garnier and features a grand hall with seating for 524 patrons.
- Le Jardin Japonaise : Designed in 1994 by a Japanese architect at the request of Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace, the Japanese Garden offers a Zen retreat that spans almost two acres and features a waterfall, small mountain, pond and tea house.
- Monaco Grand Prix : Illustrious sporting fixture held annually in May, drawing the world’s glitterati to its shores for the prestigious race and glamorous yachting scene.
- Le Jimmy’z : Iconic night club which plays host to A-listers and Hollywood ingénues, where international DJs play their sets as the rich and famous mingle outdoors on the terrace and Japanese garden
- Oceanographic Museum : Perched on cliffs overlooking the glittering Mediterranean, the museum is home to an array of fascinating marine exhibits spread over 5 levels, including interactive displays, tactile pool, Whale Room and ImmerSEAve 360º virtual reality transporting visitors to the depths of the ocean.
- Cathédrale de Monaco : Built on a site that dates back to the 13th century, the cathedral has played a significant role in the history of the Monegasque royal family.
- Larvotto Beach : This man-made stretch of pale cream sands offers visitors a relaxing sun-kissed haven where you can enjoy table service as you top up your tan. The newly revamped complex also boasts an array of cafes, bars and restaurants lined along its pine-shaded promenade.
With the grandeur of a bygone era, Monaco's diminutive dimensions belie the rarefied bubble it attracts: long graced by stars, royalty and the SuperyachtSet, the country's iconic marina is a superyacht extraordinaire. Bestowed with bars and boutiques nearby, cradled by soaring hills that are etched with the eye-poppingly ornate royal palace, and the Belle Époque twin glories of Casino de Monte-Carlo and opera house Salle Garnier a mere saunter away, Port Hercule is ablaze with the world's glitterati each summer.
This picturesque coastal nation is the world’s smallest country, after the Vatican, and is renowned as a haven for the rich and famous, who enjoy the Monaco’s tax-free status and glamorous locales.
In 1297, the Grimaldi family settled in Monaco after the land was granted to Genoa by Emperor Henry IV, with ancestors of the family controlling the principality ever since. In 1949, Prince Rainier III ascended the throne, and married Grace Kelly in 1956. The prince played an important role in bringing economic prosperity to the area, while his American actress wife was instrumental in promoting arts and culture and bringing glamor to the small nation.
The principality’s tax-free status and no income tax has attracted many rich residents, who have also played their part in shaping this tiny glittering enclave into the JetSet destination it is today. Monaco’s rich cultural influences can also be attributed to its neighbors France , Italy & Spain , with Roman Catholicism making up over two thirds of its resident’s religious beliefs.
Perched with poise above the cornflower-blue waters of the Mediterranean , motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in Monaco are in prime position to explore the wonders of the encircling French Riviera, such as Villefranche-sur-Mer, St. Tropez , Nice and Cannes , as well as venturing further afield to the Italian Riviera . Unsure what type of charter for Monaco to choose? Below we've highlighted the main points of difference.
A crewed motor yacht charter in Monaco beckons guests with its decadent allure, entirely in keeping with the principality's chichi surrounds. Think your own private chef, five-star hotel service and amenities onboard your plush paradise. With a yacht charter itinerary put together entirely to meet your needs, make the most of your freedom at sea and anchor at otherwise inaccessible bays dotted along the glittering shore.
If you are looking to lap up the splendor of Monaco and the nearby cruising grounds of France at a slower rhythm (combined with considerable outdoor deck space) a sailing yacht charter is an ideal fit. Coupled with Monaco's enviable climate, averaging more than 300 days of sunshine per year, you'll bronze in timeless style.
There is a multitude of charter yachts available in and around Monaco, given its prime position on the French Riviera and as one of the most popular West Mediterranean yacht charter destinations among the SuperyachtSet. With so many options available, there’s something to suit every type of budget. For convenience we have listed the average prices for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in Monaco below;
- For motor yacht rentals in Monaco, prices can range from $31,319 to $1.6m per week, plus expenses
- For luxury sailing yacht rentals in Monaco, prices can go from $30,130 to $542,712 weekly, plus expenses
As well as the Monaco yacht charter fee itself (plus any delivery or redelivery costs), you will need to pay VAT. But how much does VAT cost for yacht charters in Monaco? Below are the main points you need to consider before chartering:
- The new rules, which came into force in 2020, state that VAT on charters starting in Italy, France and Monaco is now applied at the country's full VAT rate at the origin of the charter, i.e. the port of embarkation.
- The standard rate of VAT is 20% for charters originating in either Monaco or France. This applies regardless of the port of disembarkation.
- For itineraries incorporating other countries, VAT will always be applied at the rate of the country of origin. So, if the charter commences in France or Monaco the rate is 20%, if the charter begins in Italy the rate is 22%.

The best time to visit Monaco varies on your intentions. Head out in May or September if you are looking to see and be seen at one of its world-renowned events, but avoid these months if you are after something more tranquil in nature. Opt for June and August when the temperature peaks, or October for clement weather and warm waters but fewer crowds.
related articles
- Monaco is eminently a walkable city, however it can be quite steep with lots of hills and flights of steps. For anyone with accessibility issues, the region offers a series of public elevators (ascenseurs publics) dotted around the various wards.
- Port Hercules is one of the most sought-after berths globally and you will need to book months in advance if you are looking for a slip during the high season.
- At peak times, it's worth visiting popular sites early. Shops and businesses don't tend to open until around 10am, so anytime before this tends to be relatively crowd-free.
- The closest airport to Monaco is Nice, complete with a dedicated private jet terminal. Monaco also has a number of heliports available that guests may take advantage of.
- When venturing through Monaco taxis are the best mode of transport, but can prove hard to come by during high season events.
With its A-lister appeal, rich arts and culture and array of world-class events, Monaco is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean . Therefore, we advise you to book your yacht charter well in advance of your trip to secure your perfect yacht on your preferred dates. If you leave it too late, the selection of yachts at your disposal will be reduced and you may not be able to explore the destinations you have your heart set on. Plus, finding dates when everyone in your charter party is available can be tricky; the longer you leave it, the more challenging it will be.

Monaco Yacht Charter Q&A
We strongly advise booking your yacht charter in Monaco at least three months in advance to ensure you get the yacht you desire. The longer you wait, the fewer choices you will have.
For most yacht rentals in Monaco to be secured, you will usually need to provide a completed charter agreement and 50% of the charter fee as a deposit. This becomes payable once the contract has been signed.
May through till September are the ideal months to visit Monaco on a yacht charter.

All you need to do is pick your chosen dates, number of guests, yacht type, features, and desired onboard toys and we'll show you what's available.

This allowance covers expenses such as fuel, berthing, food and drinks, as well as any special requests.

Alternate Option: For super budget travelers, there’s a 1-hour sightseeing cruise that’s less than $30 USD available as well. Matching its price, the tour is pretty bare bones, but you’ll still have a nice opportunity to sail along the Mediterranean Sea!
I know it can be hard to keep track of the differences and fine details of the different tours…everything kinda starts to look the same after a while 😅 So, to help yah out here’s a little chart that summarizes all the important bits!
⛵️ PRO-TIP: If you’re viewing this on your mobile, try turning your phone to the side so that you’re reading the information across the long side. That should improve the readability a bit!
Although this varies a bit depending on which Monaco boat trip you decide to book, I think there are a few general items I recommend always bringing…
- 🌞 Sunscreen: The Mediterranean Region is known for its abundance of sunny days! And with the strong UV rays reflecting off the clear blue water, you’ll want to make sure you wear lots of sunscreen and reapply often. Well, that or you’ll run the risk of looking like a burnt lobster after your boat tour…🦞
- 😎 Sunglasses / Hat: This one’s pretty self-explanatory, but don’t forget to protect your eyes and scalp from the sun too!
- 💧 Bottled Water: Some of the boat tours provide bottled water for their guests, but I suggest bringing your own just in case.
- 🍎 Snacks: Similarly, don’t forget to pack a few snacks. Personally, I like to pick up some fresh fruit from the local markets or grocery stores to keep costs down. Just remember to check if your captain allows you to eat food onboard before you do!
- 📸 Camera : During your Monaco boat tour, you’ll undoubtedly see some of the most spectacular coastal views. Be sure to bring a camera so you can capture the amazing experience 😅
- 🥶 Jacket: Lastly, if you’re planning on doing a boat tour in the winter, I highly suggest packing a good jacket! Even though the weather in Nice is usually warm compared to other areas of Europe, like Stockholm , Norway , and Zakopane , during the winter, it can still get pretty chilly out on the water. So make sure to bundle up!
If you haven’t found accommodations yet, I highly recommend considering these places in Nice. These are based on my own experiences and thorough research…
I understand that not everyone is able to devote extended lengths of time to reading endless reviews, so hopefully, this saves you a little bit of time. 😉

About boat trips in Monaco
With beaches and coves, impressive cliff edges and turquoise waters, there is no better way to explore the coastline of Monaco than from a boat.
The main ways of doing this are, depending on your budget, to charter a yacht or hire a boat ; or take a boat trip with one of the many companies located all around the marinas. The latter is a popular option for being the most cost effective and easy to organise and, of course, you don't need a skipper licence; as they usually offer scheduled departures so you just have to turn up and enjoy your day.

Note that most of the boat trips around Monaco are seasonal, starting from April and finishing in October.
Three Best Monaco Boat Tours You Shouldn’t Miss in 2023
Monaco has a very close relationship with the sea. It was founded to protect the only deep-water port on this mountainous stretch of coastline, and today it boasts a world-renowned Oceanographic Museum as well.
As a Mediterranean seafaring nation Monagasques are as welcoming on the water as they are on land. So it would make sense to plan and book a Monaco boat tour as an essential way to appreciate and enjoy the principality.
We have rounded up a selection of three of the very best Monaco boat tours for 2023.
Best Monaco Boat Tours
However well your sealegs are developed, there is an option for you here, whether it’s an exclusive personal tour, with swimming or snorkeling included, or a more leisurely combined trip that lets you take in the shoreside delights of Monaco.
Exclusive tours don’t need to break the bank and can be tailored to your wish, as long as you discuss it with your captain before leaving the harbor! Personal service and local knowledge combine to deliver fantastic memories that will last a lifetime.
The third recommendation is a terrific way to sit back, relax, and enjoy the view, docking in Monaco long enough for you to explore, perhaps see the changing of the guard at the Prine’s Palace, and then go for lunch, either in the covered market or one of the many world-class eateries in Monte-Carlo.
Private Cruise near Nice & Monaco
To the East of Nice, just past the turn-off to Cap Ferrat, is the port of Beaulieu-sur-Mer. Here you will find the starting point for our first selection to explore the Monaco coastline. It is a perfect first encounter with Mediterranean seafaring, slow and safe for those without sea legs!
Set off in a private solar-powered yacht, hired for your sole use, and entirely without emissions.
This tour lasts one hour and can be booked for up to six guests, which is perfect for a family outing.
A personal guide will captain your boat past the beachside villas of the Riviera, such as the famous Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild.
Excursions are booked in advance and leave on the hour from 9 am to 5 pm with an hour break.
Trips are priced at €71.50 for one person, but the more people that go the lower the per-person price, as the maximum you will pay is just €142.98.
The route takes you past the Tete-de-Chien, the famous Fort Mont-Alban, La Pointe de Saint Hospice, and finally with views of the medieval village of Eze.
On the return trip, the headland of Cap Ferrat juts out into the Mediterranean to the West.
The captain is very knowledgeable and can take you to see any site of particular interest, just let him know on the day.
Should you wish to swim from the boat at Paloma Beach, then it is advised that you hire the boat for at least three hours in order to have enough time. However, there are closer swimming spots that can be accommodated within a two-hour hire.
Private boat tour
To see the Cote d’Azur from the sea has to be on so many bucket lists, and this tour will tick that box admirably. Leaving from Nice at noon, choose between either Cannes or Monaco as your afternoon’s destination.
The boat can be hired for up to four people, and swimming from the boat, with snorkel equipment, is available in some of the best diving locations.
Drinks and refreshments are included in the price, so you will stay hydrated too.
Your skipper can tell you the best spots to swim where to eat on your return and knows the coastline sights incredibly well.
A trip will take about four hours and starts at midday. The excursion is exclusive and private in that it is booked to your own party.
The ticket price is €950 and is all-inclusive. It is the price per boat and includes the Captain’s fee, fuel, refreshments, equipment hire and tourist taxes.
Not recommended for those with serious medical conditions or pregnant people, due to the small size of the motorboat.
Ferry from Monaco to Cannes and Back
If you want to combine the pleasures of a boat ride with the fun of exploring the principality, then taking the ferry from Cannes to Monaco has to be the way to make these memories stand out. Wheelchair and stroller accessible, this is also one of the most inclusive ways to see the sights from the sea.
Head out from Cannes from the cruise terminal at 10 am at Quay Laubeuf at Sainte-Marguerite Island (spoiler alert, it’s not really an island, instead it’s named for the island off the Cap de la Croisette!).
The voyage will take about an hour and a half up the coastline to Monaco, past the Cap d’Antibes, and on past Nice to Monaco.
Adult tickets are €72, and children’s tickets (aged from 4-10) are €56, with those under 4 traveling free.
Although the ferry is licensed to carry up to 200 passengers, it can be booked to capacity on popular dates so it is always a good idea to book ahead.
The ferry operates on Wednesdays only throughout the summer season and the service finishes up before the end of September on the 20th of the month.
The rear deck is open to the sky, so while the threat of rain is a tiny one, it’s still a good idea to bring some protection from the sun.
When you are out at sea, the wind may pick up a little, so a jacket or a hat might be advisable, and certainly sunscreen.
Once you arrive in Monaco you will have five hours to spend in the principality. Certainly time enough for a walking tour.
The ferry leaves Monaco for Cannes at 4.30 pm and you will be back on dry land by six in the evening having seen the coastline of the Cote d’Azur the way the locals have seen it for years.
There is a restroom on board, and if the heat of the day begins to take its toll, don’t worry as the internal cabin area is air-conditioned for your comfort.
Best Places for Boat Trips around Monaco
Wherever you are holidaying in the French Riviera, these days there are ports a-plenty right along the coast and at all the larger cities. At every marina, there will be tour operators tempting you with trips to the islands, or fishing trips to the rugged caps.
The commerce of the region traveled by sea for centuries, and today there are simply hundreds of boats continuing the tradition of making a living on the water.
I would always check the reviews online and make sure that the tour operator I am thinking of booking has a strong presence on the right websites, with the option to cancel should plans change dramatically.
- The port at Cannes is one of the largest on the coast and has a number of operators who will take you out to the archipelago of islands out in the bay.
- At Port Hercules in the center of Monaco, there are tours and boat hire services that come with experienced captains that know the sea better than the lanes of the old city of Monte-Carlo.
- Antibes has boasted a busy commercial port for more than two thousand years, but you won’t see any boats that old here. Still, there will be plenty of tours to choose from here with many experienced skippers ready to make your day.
Top Safety Tips for Monaco Boat Tours
- The waters off the coast of the Cote d’Azur can get very congested in the summer months as the region is incredibly popular. If you spot anything that could cause a problem, alert your skipper straightaway.
- If you do decide to swim make sure that the skipper understands this so that they can make time for you to do so between bookings as a one-hour trip is usually not enough time to swim safely.
- Children are especially vulnerable on the water, so if you are in a smaller boat then make sure that life jackets are available and that they are wearing them properly.
- Some operators insist that smaller children sit on an adult’s lap for the duration of the tour, so do check their policies before booking.
- Make sure your children are supervised at all times, and make sure that they are not allowed to swim alone in case they get into difficulties.
- This region of France can be subject to the legendary Mistral wind, which can sometimes be quite fierce. This could, in the worst circumstances lead to a cancellation by the tour operator.
- Weather conditions can change rapidly at sea, so it’s always a good idea to pack a light waterproof jacket.
- Be sure that you and your captain are clear about your expectations of your boat tour, so you get the maximum amount of fun from your excursion.
