Plans for the original Swede 55 circa the mid-1970’s. These drawings are where most of the Spirit-of-Tradition narratives got their start.

Surprisingly undocumented for a design this important — most searches for the “Vortex 55” lead to a hand mixer — these Knud Reimers boats were among the first group to sound the starting gun for the modern Spirit-of-Tradition narrative. Drawn in 1975, the Swede 55 was all about Reimers adapting a square-meter rule, popular for that time,  to a mass-produced, fiberglass 53-foot day-sailer. Something like 35 were built between about 1975 and 1985, with names like Tiana , and Rosina. What matters today is, if you look carefully at the original design to the right, is how Reimers lays out most of the arguments of the Spirit-of-Tradition continuum: A traditional looking overhanging bow and stern, a slender hull matched to a modern keel and spade rudder — all with the most current rig and sails of the time. But what makes the design indispensable is how, back in the late 1980s Steve White, owner of Maine’s Brooklin Boat Yard , decided the Swede 55 would speak to his interests more if built out of composite wood construction. White had Reimers make a few tweaks for the build; and after a reported 7,000 man-hours of production (whoa!), a cold-molded wood layup of this modern-classic splashed into Maine’s Jericho Bay in 1990, christened as Vortex . We’ll save the ugly nitty-gritty of finessing the Spirit-of-Tradition principles into the constrained square-meter rule at the heart of this boat for another day. But still, we’ve sailed Vortex a lot. We’re in a few of these photos and videos , if you look carefully. And we can honestly report, of all the Spirit-of-Tradition boats we’ve sailed and designed, the Swede 55 is as pure a modern-classic as any vessel afloat. The Swede 55 may be from another era. But she still matters today.

The Swede 55 is a 53.0ft fractional sloop designed by Knud Reimers and built in fiberglass by Fisksätra Shipyard between 1975 and 1985.

The Swede 55 is a light sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is very stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser.

Rosina is a beautiful example of the Knud Reimers designed Swede 55. Conceived as a fast ocean cruising boat, Rosina has outstanding speed in most conditions and is particularly fast and stable on a reach or downwind regularly seeing double digit speeds. Dont be scared of the overall length Rosina is well behaved and loads are lighter than most big boats. She turns on a dime and is very responsive with a well balanced helm. Rosina is also a great cruiser the long overhangs provide ample storage space and the below decks layout is well thought out. She is capable in all conditions and Swede 55s have sailed and raced all over the world successfully.The Swede 55 is one of the few classic fiberglass sailboats with a PHRF rating under 100. You get the elegance of a swept shear and long overhangs, but the performance of a much more modern boat. The design has stood the test of time.

Rosina has received extensive updating throughout the years and has spent 11 years in fresh water. Her beautifully updated mast, larger sail plan, mainsail track system and sail handling controls separate her from other Swede 55s. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

Description

Classic fast 16 m yacht in the style of a comfortable archipelago cruiser with numerous numerous innovations in recent years, including new engine, new sails, onboard electrics, electronics, etc.. This yacht has not been sailed from 2017 -2021 and has been in indoor storage during this time. In 2022, extensive trips were made to Anholt, among other places. She is being sold for reasons of age. The Swede 55 was designed in 1975 by Stockholm yacht designer Knud Reimers as a touring version of the classic archipelago cruiser. The archipelago cruiser has been appreciated for its speed, beauty and sailing pleasure since the beginning of the 20th century. Based on the elegance of the archetype, the aim was to create a family-friendly yacht with more comfort. The slightly wider Swede 55 offers more space and a headroom of 189 cm under the stretched cabin superstructure. The seating hollow is recessed between the superstructure and the aft cabin. The aft cabin offers a comfortable berth for 2 adults with a lying length of approx. 205 cm. The centre cockpit is as safe as in a comfortable motor sailer. In rough seas it is pleasant to have a few more metres of ship behind you. The Swede 55 goes through the water extremely easily. Thanks to the slim shape, the boat has excellent rough-water characteristics. Like a long-wheelbase car, the many metres between keel and rudder provide excellent directional stability. Above all, the Swede 55 is fast, which, in addition to the fun on the water, is interesting when cruising long distances. Several participations in transatlantic regattas by Swede 55 yachts with good placings also testify to the ocean-going capability. Designed by Knud Reimers, best known for his design of square meter class yachts and the Udell International, at request of some of members of the KSSS Stockholms Royal Swedish Yacht Club.

Reimers designed the Swede 55 as a cruising ocean racing square meter yacht. The Swede 55’s design has an elevated freeboard, a comfortable center-cockpit, a nominal sail area of 55 square meters and additional volume below deck. She was inspired by Rolly Taskers “Siska”, a Knud Reimers 40 square meter boat modified for the Sydney-Hobart Race.

The Swede 55 was designed and built to be a fast, stable cruiser/racer, which has been the reputation they have built. Alongside this performance, the Swede 55 has elegant lines, even described as 'Classic' by some commentators.

This version is being sold as a mini project by the owner, who suggests, for example, a thorough valet, some cosmetic work to the headlining and an engine service. During my visit to list this boat, I was struck by an excellent opportunity to acquire a fine sailing platform, with live aboard and blue water capabilities, for a competitive price. A buyer will need to oversee the type of recommended work noted, but has the potential to finish a potentially profitable and highly rewarding sailing enterprise.

Sailing the last Fisksätra manufactured Swede 55 since 1980, I gained experience how to keep and repair the boat, how to improve and sensibly upgrade it. So I offer Swede 55 parts and accessories like

• Swede 55-bow fitting in polished stainless steel with large single sheave for anchor chain/rope
• alternatively wide version with double pulleys for two anchor lines
• versatile swimming and rescue ladder (original Fisksaetra design) stainless steel, fitting to the alloy foot rail custom made for Swede 55
• flush through hull fittings, seacocks and accessories in noncorroding and maintenancefree materials, overview of hoses and clamps required
• suggestions to transfer certain through hull fittings to make life aboard easier
• black water holding tank with discharge through deck fitting and hanging installation to empty on long voyages in open waters without extra pump
• twelve new window frames for Swede 55 with mounting instructions: fore cabin, bathroom, main cabin, large windows near companionway, aft cabin
• deck organizers port and starboard side of the mast fitting to original holes/almost matching the original design
