Public boat channel for Huntington Harbour opens Thursday

Huntington Harbour Yacht Club commodore Rudy Lopez said he hopes to take his boat out into the ocean on Thursday, weather permitting.
It isn’t just another day for Lopez.
Thursday marks the first day that the new civilian boating channel through the Anaheim Bay will be open to the public, Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach has announced.
“I just want to go out there, putz around, get into the open water and come on back,” Lopez said. “I think it’s a historic thing for us as a club. You can take that travel path any time you want, but there’s nothing like that very first day.”
Under the former configuration, which has been in place since Huntington Harbour was developed in the 1960s, civilian boaters had to pass through the Navy base in order to enter and exit the Pacific Ocean through Huntington Harbour. Now, they have their own dedicated lane.
The old channel is becoming part of Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach and being blocked off, said Gregg Smith, public affairs officer for the weapons station.
“It improves safety and security, both for the boating community as well as for the Navy,” Smith said.
The new channel is part of a $154-million U.S. Navy project designed to reconfigure Anaheim Bay, as well as build a new ammunition pier for the Navy. The project is set to be completed in 2024.
“We have an ammunition pier currently,” Smith said. “It’s actually an ammunition wharf, but it was originally constructed in 1944 and then rebuilt in 1953. It’s not been substantially modified since that time, so yes, we are definitely looking forward to a replacement.”
Smith said the public channel had to be completed before construction could continue. He added that the weapons station hopes to shorten the amount of time that the channel is closed whenever a Navy ship is entering or exiting.
“The Navy ships and civilian boats will still share the outer part of the bay there, where the mouth of the arrowhead jetties are, but it will be a much smaller area of the bay than they were sharing before,” he said.
That is good news to Lopez and the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club, who have been awaiting the channel’s opening.
“We’re located at the southernmost part of that whole channel, so we have a longer way to travel,” Lopez said. “Cutting down a little bit of the time to get into the open water is a good thing.”
Work on armoring the sides of the new channel will continue for several more months.

About the Business
Founded in 1965, HHYC Has played an active role in our community by providing a venue for many local philanthropic groups and offering a true Yacht Club experience to our growing membership. Our members enjoy on and off the water events that bring a certain pride and togetherness to those that take part in our fun cruises and boating events. Our kids Sailing School, well known as the Huntington Beach Sailing Foundation, will teach the needed skills to the many kids that will be the future of Sailing throughout Southern California. We are more than a Yacht Club as many of our non boat owners will tell you, as the social functions at the club are the reasons many people from our community have joined together to take part in our many Holiday events or attend a Friday evening starting at our bar, overlooking Catalina Island, followed by a well presented dinner in our spacious dining room. Also popular is our Sunday Brunch in a sunny bay setting while sipping a mimosa and meeting new friends. …

Beautiful place to eat on the water in Huntington Harbour. Brunch is open to the public on Sunday's only. Banquet facilities available to rent. Club members enjoy many fun activities.

1 star for the view. I wish they welcomed younger families. They also need to train their kitchen staff for a better menu and find resources for quality meat. They need to revamp the place. And WELCOME YOUNGER FAMILIES to make some changes to the place to make it better. It's run down and just not working out anymore. They need better marketing to get events going to get more funding for the place.
4th of July event
I worked with Dee Dee to plan a Celebration of Life event. She was fantastic and helped us plan an event for 150 people. Everything went very smoothly and I can not say enough at how nice the venue was. I would definitely recommend them for your next event.
Burial at Sea with military honors for my husband, USMC SGT Thurston A "Biff" Prince of Flowery Branch, GA was performed by Prince Charters LLC (no relations) on July 11, 2023. The accommodations were excellent, the service was professional and respectful. I highly recommend.
What happened to this place? I recently brought friends to HHYC for their "everyone is welcome" brunch. It was horrible. Before Covid-19, the food was good, the prices were decent and Sunday Brunch was enjoyable. This place has gone downhill since before Covid-19. I don't want to be a member because this place is full of old mean hags. But it would be nice to attend the brunch if the food an service returns to pre-covid quality. What did HHYC do wrong?
We recently had a Celebration of Life for a family member where more than 65 people attended. Coordinating the event with Dee Dee, the office manager, was a breeze. The pricing was much more competitive than I had anticipated as well. The venue is unbeatable, ocean views from all the windows, indoor and outdoor spaces blend together, and a dock to walk on and/or park your boat. We even saw dolphins when we were on the dock! There are 3rd party groups that you can coordinate for harbor cruises or spreading of ashes as well. Parking for everyone's vehicles was easy and free. We were on a budget and opted to use a 3rd party catering company, Golden Olive, that is located immediately behind the yacht club. Both groups worked together perfectly and the food was fantastic! And, there were no hidden fees from either vender. I can't speak highly enough about the staff, they really are fantastic. The bartenders & event manager have great personalities, are great "people pleasers" and pour doubles for the price of a single. Surprisingly we were well under our budget for drinks too! It was a fantastic event and the team at the HH Yacht Club really made it special for everyone who attended. Most importantly, it was easy and literally everyone who attended was thankful and amazed how by the quality and ease. Strongly recommended and will definitely do future events here.
Plenty of room
Dolphins greeted us at the dock
The food was terrible but the staff and the views are great. The food is powdered eggs dry biscuits and terrible gravy. The endless mimosas were 10.00 so worth it. I don't take pictures of any food because it was terrible. Here's one picture of the bay, one good thing about this place.
Planning a special event is stressful. Planning a Celebration of Life to lovingly honor the most important person in your world takes that stress to an entirely different level. While grieving the loss of my very best friend, my wife, the decision was made by my daughters and me to hire Dee Dee Hall and her team at the HHYC. Without question, it was a great decision! From beginning to end, Dee Dee was amazing. She was attentive, professional, experienced, efficient, knowledgeable, flexible, and offered suggestions for cost savings. While those are all excellent business traits, it was her kindness, compassion, empathy and humor that truly sets her apart. Sincere compliments to her entire staff, as well. They all worked with a smile and went out of their way to ensure our night was a success. We requested some personal touches throughout the night that were met with the same "can do" attitude. Most importantly, I believe my sweetheart would have thoroughly enjoyed it all....especially eating dessert before dinner!
No words can describe how amazing the staff is! We recently got married here last July 1, 2021. Everything went smoothly! Open bar costs $3,000 the whole night!!! They packed everything for us, they made sure the table centerpieces were returned to us, the servers made sure guests are all entertained and served. As a bride, I was taken cared of very well! They made sure we were eating and hydrated. The staff are friendly! AMAZING. The venue is perfect, weather wise, space wise. We had a rehearsal and the office manager was very coordinated. She made sure every flow of our wedding is smooth! Props to Huntington Harbour Yacht Club!
Ehh. I can think of a lot of other places I would rather be in Huntington with much better food and much better ambiance. Servers can be very rude here. Visited multiple times before posting this. Don't think i'll be back anytime ... soon.

Huntington Harbour Yacht Club opened in 1965.
Kimberley Harrison, who grew up in a sailing family, joined Huntington Harbour Yacht Club in 2011 and recently became the second woman to serve as the club’s commodore.
‘We’ve got a lot of great plans and events, and this club is going places,’ says incoming commodore Kimberley Harrison.
When the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club started, it was simply a small beach house tucked behind the Huntington Beach tennis club.
These days, it’s a bustling hub for boaters who gather regularly to share drinks, food and the camaraderie that comes with being an ocean lover.
The club is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and on Saturday it threw a party to celebrate the milestone. It was also a night to celebrate incoming commodore Kimberley Harrison.
“It’s a really close-knit family with a lot of stories, a lot of laughs,” Harrison said.
What started out as a few people forming the club in 1965 has turned into a robust membership with about 300 people. The club caters mostly to motorboats, but there are some sailors among the members, according to former commodore Jim Wallace, who has been with the club since 2004.
Wallace said that when he joined the club, there were some challenges with the down economy, which drove down participation.
“We sat down, a few of the members, my wife and I, and we decided what we needed is more personalization,” Wallace said.
Back then, the meals served came from an outside catering company. Wallace, his wife and a few others decided to use the kitchen and whip up home-cooked meals every Friday night and Sunday morning.
“It seemed to intrigue the members,” he said.
Sunday brunch was a hit, and it went from once a month to every week. Now it’s open to the public.
“We thought it would be a public relations gesture; it would give us an opportunity to introduce it to people who might be intimidated by what they thought a yacht club is,” he said. “We try to make a real effort to make them feel at home.”
It wasn’t until last year that the yacht club opened up full time, serving dinner and drinks seven nights a week. And the calendar for the club is filled with cruises and races to keep members busy.
“It’s become, in many ways, a home away from home,” Wallace said.
Flying a yacht club flag allows people to enjoy reciprocity with other yacht clubs around the world, and people are welcomed into other ports and marinas like old friends.
“We’ve been treated like rock stars when we go visit the other yacht clubs,” Wallace said. “You feel unified. No matter where you are in the world, you’ll be welcome in the yacht club in the city you’re visiting. It’s a fraternal feeling; you know you’ll be welcome no matter where in the world you might be, because of the unity of being a yachting member.”
The club recently underwent major renovations, including a rebuild of the front deck, remodeling of the bar area, installing of wood floors and a sprucing up of the rear deck overlooking the harbor. One of the things Wallace is most proud of is the summer sailing school for low-income kids each year.
Harrison hopes more improvements will be made to the club under her leadership. There will be a big effort toward bringing the club into the electronic age, as well as getting newer members more involved. She’d also like to see more yachting seminars scheduled throughout the year for both men and women.
For Harrison, being on the water comes easy for a girl who grew up sailing in Canada with her grandfather and father, who owns a historic schooner in Dana Point. She joined HHYC in 2011 and is the second woman to serve as the club’s commodore.
“It’s still quite an old man’s club, as is the whole yachting industry,” she said. “I feel honored. I’m excited. We’ve got a lot of great plans and events, and this club is going places.”
