A Cutting-Edge, Upstart Yacht Club in Sardinia

  • Sept. 4, 2015

Two centenarian clubs occupied the top of the global yachting world in 1983: the New York Yacht Club and the Royal Yacht Squadron, on England’s Isle of Wight.

The stone foundations of the two clubhouses on opposite sides of the Atlantic resembled mini forts defending their traditions from the modern world. New York was also defending something equally precious: the America’s Cup.

So the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, founded in 1967 by the Aga Khan, raised more than a few eyebrows when it sent a challenger to Newport, Rhode Island, for the 1983 America’s Cup races, a curvy red diamond dominating its burgee and spirited young Italian sailors on board. But the team put on a strong showing and went on to pursue their Azzura racing campaigns into the modern world of Grand Prix sailing.

The America’s Cup involvement is only a blip, however, in the club’s history, which is considerably shorter than that of the most significant American and European yacht clubs, all founded between the mid 1800s and early 1900s. In its short existence, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has influenced not only the type of racing that members of the venerable clubs and other sailors in the yachting establishment enjoy, but also the level of service and hospitality on shore that is now standard at all large yachting events.

“They are still a small club compared to the most influential ones,” said Bruno Trouble, a French America’s Cup sailor who created the enduring partnership between the sponsor Louis Vuitton and the Cup challenger series. “They are quite influential in the wealth of the membership alone. And it is an incredible place to sail and enjoy. It’s the most expensive postcard in the world.”

The Aga Khan developed the rugged shore of Sardinia and the natural harbor of Porto Cervo in the 1960s. He continued to build hotels along the Costa Smeralda and carved out a corner for his vision of a new yacht club to service the growing number of ultra wealthy vacationers on the Italian island.

Originally housed in the rustic Maison du Port, in 1977 the club moved into a purpose-built facility overlooking the azure waters of the harbor. It has a modern marina capable of hosting some of the largest private sail and motor yachts on the planet.

If the established clubs of the world were holding to the traditional look and feel of a classic yacht club, with walnut-paneled walls and dimpled leather chairs, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda was catering to the appetites of their billionaire members, who were used to the contemporary luxury of Europe and elite resorts around the world.

But the Porto Cervo club’s biggest influence on world yachting and racing has been in the superyacht scene, Trouble said: Owners need a place to race their 200-foot yachts.

“Boats get bigger and bigger, and we had to become better organized on shore,” said Ricardo Bornadeo, the commodore of the club and the club’s first secretary, who raced a 44-footer in the early days of the club. “We are following the natural evolution of the fleet around the world and the expectations of the owners.”

The rocky section of Sardinian coastline to which the yacht club clings is visually spectacular, and the view is complimented by the high-end luxury of the hotels promoted by the Aga Khan. Presidential hotel suites can be had for $36,000 per night.

But Bornadeo said “lifestyle” was only part of the story. “We prefer to concentrate on the best possible organization on the water and on land, and with all kinds of assistance for the sailors and their boats,” he added. “Lifestyle is not our target.”

The yachting historian John Rousmaniere said that the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda filled a growing need. “The maxi yachts wanted to be able to sail in the Med,” he said. “The owners needed someone they could count on to host them and give them a luxurious experience. It caught on right away.”

Bornadeo said the Aga Khan is still the driving force behind the club’s management.

Each act of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has been hard to follow and hard to match. But with most rival yacht clubs well over 100 years old, there is a lot more history to write for this “new” club.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s 2024 sporting season was presented today in Milan at Casa Gessi, moderated by Sky Sports commentator Giovanni Bruno.

Princess Zahra Aga Khan, President of the Board of Directors of the YCCS opened the event, thanking those present and highlighting: “The upcoming sporting season at the YCCS will certainly be an intense one, with regattas scheduled from May to October. This year also marks a significant anniversary: 40 years of collaboration with our longstanding partner Rolex. A strong and solid bond that has seen us share values, ideals, and projects for the creation of a sporting calendar of international relevance over these four decades. Naturally the support of all the other partners, as well as the commitment of the YCCS management and staff, also constitute fundamental elements that have allowed our Club to become a point of reference in the sailing world. We constantly follow the evolution of sailing through each one of our activities and programmes, seeking to adapt to the times in which we live, while keeping traditions alive. Through the sport of sailing we have the opportunity to promote guiding principles, from excellence and innovation, to respect for the sea and the region that hosts us, and support for the next generations.”

The other partners supporting the YCCS are Range Rover and Allianz, while Quantum Sails, Slam, Garmin Marine and Technogym are technical partners.

Following the greeting from the Princess, YCCS Secretary General and Sports Director, Edoardo Recchi, took to the stage for the official presentation of the regatta calendar. Immediately after the RAN 630 – Regata dell’Accademia Navale, scheduled from 24 April to 1 May, where the Club offers its technical support as the fleet rounds the course mark off the Sardinian coast, the 2024 season in Porto Cervo will kick off with the traditional Vela & Golf event (24-26 May), followed by the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, scheduled from 4 to 8 June.

For the third consecutive year Giorgio Armani, an Italian icon in the world of fashion, will support the YCCS as title sponsor of the event. Building on the success of past editions, the Southern Wind Rendezvous and Trophy will take place as part of the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, which sees yachts from the Southern Wind yard gather in Porto Cervo for a sailing event characterised by a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship. A busy month of June will continue with three more regattas slated. The J/24 Class will return to the YCCS for the J/24 European Championship from 10 to 16 June.

Created in the late 1970s by Rod Johnstone, the J/24 one-design is one of the most popular keelboats in the world, with more than 5,000 units estimated to have been produced to date and around 100 fleets active internationally. The J/24 European Championship is a highly anticipated event in the 2024 calendar for the class and the YCCS is delighted to welcome a fleet that has made a significant contribution to the popularity of competitive sailing. The last event dedicated to the J/24 Class in Porto Cervo dates back to 1996, and this season sees another eagerly awaited return with the Grand Soleil Cup, a sailing event organised in collaboration with Cantiere del Pardo with a fleet of around 40 boats expected to attend. The month will conclude with the Smeralda 888 Invitational (28-30 June), followed by the traditional Coppa Europa Smeralda 888 (12-14 July) aboard the Smeralda 888 craft, conceived by renowned yacht designer German Frers especially for the YCCS. From 19-21 July the fourth edition of the YCCS J/70 Sailing Clinic will take place.

During the short break held over July and August, the YCCS Members Championship reserved for Club members (4 August) will take place, preceded on 3 August by the Annual General Meeting at which the new YCCS Commodore will be elected. August will host the Formenton Trophy (20th August) and the Palermo-Porto Cervo-Montecarlo, regattas in which the YCCS offers technical support.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (8-14 September) and the Rolex Swan Cup (15-21 September) will mark a special September. As always, an impressive fleet highlighting the very best of yachting, throughout its history, will gather for the 34th edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, organised in collaboration with the International Maxi Association (IMA). In 2023, for example, the J Class and the classic yacht Baruna of 1938 were present alongside recent projects such as Pier Luigi Loro Piana’s My Song, Andrea Recordati’s Bullitt, and the very latest launches such as the Wally 101 Y3K. The inclusion of catamarans in the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup for the first time last year met with great success, and will be repeated for the 2024 edition.

The Rolex Swan Cup is a biennial event celebrating the virtuous partnership between title sponsor Rolex, the Nautor Swan shipyard and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, who are celebrating 40 years of collaboration in 2024. The event attracts a large fleet of yachts representing the entire history of the Nautor Swan family. Taking part in the 22nd edition of the Rolex Swan Cup for the first time will be the ClubSwan 43 and ClubSwan 28 classes, fresh from their launch this year. The Rolex Swan Cup is a benchmark event both internationally and in the YCCS sporting calendar, distinguished by the unique family spirit that has characterised it since its inception.

The season will conclude with the Etchells European Championship, taking place after the Smeralda Cup. The regattas, open to all Etchells boats, are scheduled from 1 to 6 October. Racing for the Smeralda Cup will take place on 2 and 3 October, as a warm-up competition ahead of the European Championship running from 4 to 6 October. The championship will follow the open format, allowing teams from outside of Europe to take part, without competing for the title. The Ethcells is a one-design keelboat class. With an overall length of 30.5 feet (9.3 metres) and measuring 22 feet (6.71 metres) at the waterline, its elegant lines were designed by American Skip Ethcells in the mid-1960s as part of a design competition to produce a new three-person Olympic class boat, although the Soling was chosen in the end.

During the course of the 2024 season, sustainability will remain one of the central themes promoted by the Club. Members, owners and sailors will be made aware of the principles of respect for and preservation of the marine environment contained in the Charta Smeralda, the One Ocean Foundation’s code of ethics. The annual YCCS Clean Beach Day will take place, an event that involves the local community in a morning of beach cleaning accompanied by a lesson from biologists, usually organised on 8 June to mark World Oceans Day. YCCS regattas will also adhere to the Clean Regattas programme drawn up by Sailors for the Sea, an international non-profit organisation that has developed ad hoc certifications for sail racing. In this context, depending on the requirements met on the check list drawn up by the organisation, the certificates issued can range from bronze to platinum level. In 2023, all the major YCCS regattas – the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, The Nations Trophy – Swan One Design, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, the Scandinavian Gold Cup and the International 5.5 Metre Class World Championship – were awarded Gold Clean Regattas certification. With the aim of reducing environmental impact, MarkSetBot robotic buoys will once again be used this season, which maintain their position thanks to an electric motor combined with a GPS system, eliminating the need for anchors on the seabed.

At the end of the presentation of the YCCS 2024 sports calendar, moderator Giovanni Bruno introduced a video clip dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the partnership between the YCCS and Rolex. In the short clip, the story of the partnership is narrated by Princess Zahra Aga Khan. Starting from her childhood memories of the quays of Porto Cervo, crowded with sailors from all over the world taking part in the regattas that would make the name of the YCCS and go down in the history books of yachting, the Princess underlines the values shared with Rolex which underpin the longstanding collaboration.

Participants also enjoyed a surprise video message from Italian tennis champion and Rolex testimonee Jannik Sinner, who sent his best wishes for the 2024 sporting season on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Rolex-YCCS partnership. The video was preceded by a speech from the General Manager of Rolex Italy, Stefan Muller, who thanked the YCCS for the rewarding collaboration.

The excitement continued with the presentation of the latest athlete to have joined the ranks of the Young Azzurra programme. Born in Sardinia, Italy in 2006, Maddalena Spanu quickly made a name for herself in the world of board sports. Her sporting adventures began when she took up surfing at just 4 years of age, followed at 6 by a passion for windsurfing.

In 2021, she took up the challenge of Wingfoil racing, quickly emerging as one of the top athletes nationally and internationally. 2023 proved to be a year of success and personal fulfilment for Maddalena, culminating in winning the Wingfoil World Championship in Brasil. Joining Maddalena on the stage were the other two athletes in the Young Azzurra programme, Cesare Barabino (ILCA 7 Class) and Federico Pilloni (reigning European Youth iQFOiL Champion), who talked about their respective competitive programmes for the 2024 season.

The Young Azzurra sports programme was launched in 2020 by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda to support young, emerging talents in Italian sailing, with a focus on equal opportunities. The project was created and will continue to evolve bearing the name and the legacy of Azzurra and sees the YCCS committed to supporting young up-and-coming sailors for the four-year period 2021/2024 who are looking to take part in national, European and World Championships and the Olympic Games. Also attending the YCCS press conference was the President of the Italian Sailing Federation, Francesco Ettorre, who spoke on stage during the presentation of the Young Azzurra athlete Maddalena Spanu, recalling how important these types of programmes are to support young people in their sailing careers.

Founder of Porto Cervo’s Yacht Club Costa Smeralda honoured at World Superyacht Awards 2019

By Katia Damborsky   23 May 2019

His Highness the Aga Khan saw the potential of Sardinia ’s Costa Smeralda as a yachting hub in the 1950’s, and the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club was established as a result of his vision.

Businessman, spiritual leader and philanthropist His Highness the Aga Khan was presented with the Legacy Award at the World Superyacht Awards 2019 in London on May 18.

He was honoured for his discovery and development of the Costa Smeralda region, near Porto Cervo , on the north east portion of Sardinia in the sixties.

By introducing the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, he is largely responsible for turning this part of Sardinia into the superyacht magnet it is today.

He wanted the area to become an exclusive destination for elite travellers, while still maintaining its natural beauty and heritage.

His Highness the Aga Khan, founder of Yacht Club Costa Smeralda

Together with Andrè Ardoin, Giuseppe Kerry Mentasti and Luigi Vietti, the Aga Khan established the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda on 1967 as a sporting centre for fellow sailing enthusiasts looking for a slice of Italian paradise.

Since its inception, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has organised a number of international regattas which it went on to host in later years, making the Aga Khan a worthy winner of this prestigious accolade.

The Aga Khan is also noted for his role in the establishment of the Costa Smeralda Consortium in 1962.

Costa Smeralda's Regatta Circuit

This year, the hotly-anticipated Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2019 will be back at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda on June 3, marking an important date in the calendar for the Mediterranean yacht charter season.

Over five days, thrilling races will take place around La Maddalena archipelago, which sits just a few kilometres from Sardinia. This scattering of islands creates around 50 fast-paced racing circuits, each of which are complemented by excellent sailing conditions and stunning scenery.

Visiting the Emerald Coast

Those on a superyacht vacation in Italy shouldn’t miss the chance to explore Sardinia, and discover everything this idyllic island has to offer.

On the north eastern tip, Porto Cervo has earned a reputation for its sailing, superyachts and luxury living. It regularly pulls in luxury charter yachts with its countless designer fashion houses, upscale restaurants and chic beach clubs.

Further along the coast lies the Costa Smeralda. With a name which translates to ‘Emerald Coast’, this stretch of shoreline is lapped by the Tyrrhenian sea and promises clear, turquoise water, ivory, sun-baked beaches and plenty of calm, secluded anchorages for charter yachts looking for some peace and quiet.

It’s all too easy to understand why his Highness the Aga Khan fell in love with this Sardinian stretch of coastline all those years ago, and why his legacy will live on as Costa Smeralda continues to delight those exploring on a  West Mediterranean private yacht charter .

Sardinia is known to be one of the best sailing areas in the world. Since 1978 the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is running its sailing school that is recognised by the Italian Sailing Federation. From May to October classes are held in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, in the enchanting surroundings of the Costa Smeralda, that are run in collaboration with renowned 2nd level FIV Instructor Franco Pistone.

The fleet is always clean with equipment and sails in perfect condition with scrupulous care and maintenance of the boats. You can choose between dinghies and keelboats. Dinghies include various options of lasers both for beginners and advanced sailors that promise fun and agile sailing. For adults the 7.2 meter J-24’s or 10.5 meter J-105’s keelboats are suggested, which are more challenging, fun and stable.

Porto Cervo

is the heart of Costa Smeralda. It has been built in the 60’ and since then it has been a turning point in the history of Sardinia and of the Italian tourism industry. The village has been developed around the bay. Moving away from the port, in the surrounding hills, houses and villas are less concentrated and benefit from large gardens and outdoor spaces. The first part of Porto Cervo has been built around the Old Dock. Here are the Maison du Port and the Coastguard Offices, two typical examples of the Costa Smeralda architecture. A little wooden bridge leads the way to the village centre, the “piazzetta”. Small lanes, stairways, arcades and underpasses link the piazzetta to the other main areas of Porto Cervo: Sottopiazza and the above piazzetta (the true centre), Piazzetta delle Chiacchere, Piazza degli Ulivi and Piazza degli Archi. These little squares and the streets between them are full of shops, bars and restaurants among the most renowned.

The Marina is the second centre of gravity in Porto Cervo. The most beautiful yachts in the Mediterranean are harboured here. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is a prime organizer of international regattas. The church of Stella Maris is located opposite the Yacht Club, in a dominant position. Its design is very typical of the area in particular the large granite stone supporting the porch. Up on the hill, behind the church is Sa Conca, a shopping colonnade. From here a series of stairways lead down the hill towards the marina.

The Harbour

From the surrounding hills the view of the bay is simply beautiful. The particular shape of the coastline reminds the head of a deer, from where Porto Cervo has taken its name (Port Deer). There are two docking spots, the Old Dock and the more recent Marina where the Yacht Club and the shipyards are. The shipyards can offer assistance to yachts up to 45 metres. The harbour can host 700 boats from 6,5 to 55 metres. Electricity, sweet water, telephone and TV are available at every berth.

Ku-Ring-Gai III  led at every mark to take a well-deserved bullet and secure third overall, while  New Moon III  (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Peter Vlasov) sailed a great race to cross third to end a tough week for them   For  Aspire , this was their first attempt at the world title and also marks the first ever 5.5 Metre title won by a Polish team. Winning major titles, and Olympic medals, is no stranger to Kusznierewicz but he was genuinely delighted, and relieved, to have taken home this title this week.   “It's an amazing feeling to be the world champions in the 5.5 Metre class. We enjoyed it so much. Actually, I must say, it was tough. We had to put a lot of energy into it. We built up for a couple of days after arriving here, and every day we were striving to improve. I believe this dedication was the key to our success – to never give up, to be better every day. We delivered. Just one point ahead of  Artemis . Congratulations to them. Also, a shoutout to the Australian team led by John Bacon. The entire fleet was fantastic, and we truly enjoyed Porto Cervo and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Thank you very much.”

Middleman, Przemysław Gacek, added,  “We really enjoyed our time here. It is my first title ever, so I'm super excited. I was practically pushed into the water already, so I'm quite wet. It’s been an amazing few days in Porto Cervo, a great venue for sailing with different angles and conditions. Today was a surprise because after the first race, it calmed down, and we thought we were going back. Then they let us go for the last race, which was just unbelievable. We pretty much, let’s say, defended the championship in the last two, three hundred meters. An amazing time. Also, big congratulations to Mateusz, our incredible skipper, and to Ed, who, after becoming the World Champion in Finn, secured his second World Championship this year. We are proud to have him as a team member.”   Current Finn world champion, and bowman, Ed Wright, was overjoyed to win a second title this year, “ It was an awesome regatta, really. Porto Cervo is an incredible venue with some really good winds, offering a mixture of sailing conditions – wavy, flat, windy, light, medium, testing every sort of angle of sailing technicality. Being a member of  Aspire  was fantastic, and I'm happy to have won the world championship. It was stressful along the way with our ups and downs, but in the end, we came out on top.”

Aspire and Artemis slug it out for 5.5 Metre World Championship in Porto Cervo

Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) and  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) extended on the fleet with a race win apiece on the penultimate day of the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia.  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) moves up to third.

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

Thursday brought light and occasionally moderate winds for a great day of racing in Porto Cervo, while many of the top 10 recorded some high scores, which opened the gap for the top two boats.   The first race started with a Mistral wind of 8-9 knots with several boats over the line at the start, which left them playing catch up. The front runners from the start were  Jean Genie  (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairadh Scott),  Aspire  and  Ku-Ring-Gai III  rounding the first windward mark in that order, very close to each other.    Aspire  and  Ku-Ring-Gai III  used the downwind pressure well, both passing  Jean Genie  and from that point onward, they led the race, with  Aspire  crossing first ahead of  Ku-Ring-Gai III .  Jean Genie  managed to secure third on the last downwind leg, passing  Artemis .

Artemis fight back on Day 3 of World Championship in Porto Cervo

Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) put in the best performance on day 3 of the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia, to pull back to within three points of event leaders  Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright).  John B  (BAH 26, Gavin McKinney, Mathias Dahlman, Lars Horn Johannessen) moved up the third after winning the last race of the day.

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

Despite the earlier start at 11.00 to make the best of the forecast, Wednesday produced light and shifty conditions of no more than 5-8 knots that challenged everyone and brought a lot of different boats to the front of the fleet. It was a tough day and many decisions had big consequences as the fleet navigated the tricky wind.   In Race 5,  Marie-Françoise XXII  (SUI 232, Jürg Menzi, Lionel Rupp, Christof Wilke) rounded first and sailed away to a comfortable win. Behind them,  Beta Crucis  (AUS  63, Bob Stoddard, Martin Cross, Simon Reffold) rounded second with  Artemis  in third and battled downwind and up again with  Caracole  (SUI 214, Bernard Haissly, Daniel Stampfli, Nicolas Berthoud) also in the mix. As they approached the finish,  Artemis  just had enough lags to cross in front of  Beta Crucis  to take second.   The breeze looked like it might increase for the second race but in fact dropped to 5-6 knots. This time,  Isla  (GBR 40, Stephen Quigley, William Finlay, Tom Quigley) rounded first from John B and  Melx III  (GRE  5, Stavros Papagiannopoulos, Panagiotis Kamouridis, Pavlos Kagialis). At the gate  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) was just ahead of  John B  with the Greeks still in third. It all changed on the second beat with  John B  making a break and leading down to the finish from  Artemis  and  Ku-Ring-Gai III.

Both  Artemis  and  John B  put in impressive performances in very tough conditions. With the discard now in after six races,  Aspire  holds a three point lead over  Artemis , which scored two amazing second places today, while  John B  is a further nine points back.   Gavin McKinney said,  “The first 10 minutes of the race set the tone, and whether you're a slow or fast boat matters. If a slow boat gets in front, faster boats may catch up, but if a fast boat positions itself well, it becomes challenging to be overtaken. Two days ago, a faster boat passed us when we were in front. Today, we had good pressure, played some shifts well, and that seemed to work in our favour.   “It's crucial to secure a decent lane at the start and then position yourself on the right side. In the first race today, unfortunately, we were on the wrong side, and we faced some challenges. However, in the last race, we made the right call, and upon tacking, we achieved a favourable angle and quickly moved ahead of the fleet. It's a bit like rolling the dice, and consistency pays off. We're pleased, especially considering we were almost late for the start today. We managed to get out there, and we used our light gear, which was a bit of a gamble, but it turned out okay. It was the first time we've used it.”

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

It's the first major championship for the Greek team and they are really enjoying the fleet and the competition.   Stavros Papagiannopoulos said, “ We truly appreciate the class and the races, and the race committee does an excellent job. The weather has been very pleasant, and today's conditions were particularly accommodating for us, resulting in a much better performance compared to previous days.   “In the second race, we fared quite well, relatively speaking. The initial part of the race was solid, and we managed the downwind section effectively. However, we encountered some challenges in the second part, leading to a bit of a setback and we ended up in 11th position.”

Aspire seizes lead on Day 2 of 5.5 Metre World Championship in Porto Cervo

Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) has taken the lead at the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia, after two more races on Tuesday, in very different conditions.   The Jean Genie  (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairadh Scott) drops to second and  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) remains third.

Highlights from Day 2 of the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship in Porto Cervo

Louise Morton, possibly the first, but certainly the first women in a long time, to win a 5.5 Metre world championship race said,  “It was a fantastic day of racing. We had a clear plan going into it, but unfortunately, we got off to a rough start and had to cross a few boats on port after the initial start. However, we decided to head towards the right side of the course, where we found better wind pressure, and it paid off. We managed to secure a lead at the first mark and maintained it throughout the entire race. It was incredibly thrilling, even though I wasn't allowed to glance around much. I kept asking, "Are we still in the lead?" So overall, it was a great experience, and I'm thrilled with our performance. Winning a race in a world championship is a first for me, and I'm absolutely ecstatic about it.   “However, the second race didn't go as smoothly for us. We had a decent start and managed to reach the top mark in the vicinity of fifth place. Unfortunately, the wind became extremely light, and the waves were still quite substantial. We encountered some challenges, including hitting a mark, and this led to various mishaps. Several boats ended up passing us during this race. We're hoping that this race will be our discard, and we can bounce back in the upcoming races.”

Aspire  has taken the overall lead after four races. Kusznierewicz said, “ Sailing in Porto Cervo for the World Championship has certainly presented its challenges. We always have a plan for the first beat after the start, but here, you really have to sense what the wind will do. The conditions are made trickier by the significant waves, which persisted even when the wind was lighter today.    “The 5.5 boat is fantastic, and I absolutely love sailing it. However, it's crucial to work as a cohesive team; it can't be just one person's effort. I'm genuinely pleased with how Ed and Czemek (Przemysław) performed today.    “We operated as a unit, responding to the waves and the wind. Really good job for Louise and her team for winning the first race of the day, and I also want to commend Bernard Haissly from the  Caracole  team for their good performance.   “But we're mindful that this regatta is far from over; we're not even halfway through. Our focus must remain sharp. I've stressed to my team that it's going to be a long week. The weather forecast for the upcoming days suggests it won't be easy. We can expect varying wind conditions, sometimes even light winds. There are plenty of exceptional sailors here who are fully capable of winning races. So, we're staying focused, aiming to enjoy the experience, and in the end, we'll see where we stand.”

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

On  Ali Baba , five times (as helm) world champion Flavio Marazzi is sailing with his two daughters, Julie (15) and Eline (12). They are now in eighth overall after a 2,4 today, matching the score of  Aspire .   Julie explained,  “The 5.5 is an incredibly cool boat to sail and sailing with your family is always a fantastic experience. It allows us to spend quality time together and build a strong sense of trust and mutual respect. It's funny because when we were kids, we used to say, ‘Dad's a sailor,’ but we didn't fully grasp what that meant until we started sailing ourselves. We've developed a deep respect for his profession and what he does.   “Additionally, the location here is stunning, and sailing in Porto Cervo is a lot more enjoyable than back home in Switzerland at Thunersee. It's a bit wilder here with more waves and, usually, more wind. Although today's conditions weren't as windy as we'd hoped for, the first race was still amazing.”   In the Evolution fleet,  Criollo  (GER 30, Andreas Christiansen, Felix Christiansen, Moritz Christiansen) maintains her lead in 22nd, while the first Classic boat remains  Cibele  (ITA 72, Fabrizio Cavazza, Vittorio Zaoli, Duccio Colombi) in 24th. Racing in Porto Cervo continues Wednesday and runs through until Friday.   Results after 4 races 1  Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) 10 2  The Jean Genie  (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairadh Scott) 19 3  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) 21 4  New Moon III  (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Peter Vlasov) 25 5  John B  (BAH 26, Gavin McKinney, Mathias Dahlman, Lars Horn Johannessen) 28 6  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) 29 7  Girls On Film  (GBR 41, Louise Morton, Andrew Mills, Sam Haines) 32 8  Ali Baba  (SUI 224, Flavio Marazzi, Julie Marazzi, Eline Marazzi) 34 9  Shaolin  (SUI 226, Philippe Dürr, Andreas Kindlimann, Hans Von Werdt) 36 10  Manly  (AUS 44, Marc Ryan, Dave Edwards, Marcus Burke) 38   Full results: https://www.yccs.it/regate-2023/international_55_metre_class__world_championship-3311/risultati-307/risultati_provvisori_dopo_r2   Many more photos in the gallery here::   https://www.flickr.com/photos/fivepointfivemetre/albums/72177720311474707

How guest reviews work

Each review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.

An accommodation can reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.

Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Costa Smeralda’s most exclusive clubs: recommendations for a memorable tour

  • Yacht Itineraries

The clubs of Costa Smeralda: light up your charter

The nightlife in Costa Smeralda is filled with clubs, discos, exclusive restaurants and VIPs. The coolest destination of a yacht holiday in Sardinia , located on the Gallura shore in the north-east of the island, is home to Italian and international celebrities and the paparazzis that follow the trail of countless parties, posting news on the most exclusive spots and majestic boats docked in Porto Cervo, the heart of Sardinia’s nightlife.

Billionaire Club Porto Cervo

Clubbing and nightlife in Costa Smeralda

Need a recommendation on what to do before dinner? Anchor your yacht in Costa Smeralda after a day at sea and stop at Upper, Palau’s best Sushi & Lounge Bar, not far from Porto Cervo, for an aperitif in the sophisticated and laid back atmosphere of its terrace overlooking the Island of La Maddalena. You can stop here and dance until the wee hours of the morning or head to one of Costa Smeralda’s many exclusive discos . The area is packed with nightclubs . Make sure to hit the elegant Billionaire, a symbol of the local nightlife and the top destination of many a celebrity.

Last summer Pepero Club in Porto Cervo launched under a new management. This “club into the club”: the restaurant managed by Gianfranco Vissani caters to forty-year olds, whereas the club welcomes a younger clientele. Sottovento and Sopravento are Costa Smeralda’s long-standing discos . While both boast a dazzling synergy of style and exclusivity, the latter caters to a younger crowd. Vip Room, the international club, has recently opened a facility in the area on Poltu Quatu’s stack with a dense program of events featuring international DJs.

Migliori Club Costa Smeralda

Tartaruga, with its turtle-shaped windows, is one of the most famous nightclubs in Porto Rotondo and home to many celebrities who love to spend their evenings here. Another choice is Black Moon, in Villaggio Ladunia, that features an excellent bar, or Rha, popular with the rich youth and crowds of friends who love it for its laid-back and carefree atmosphere.

The foremost and most thrilling institution of Costa Smeralda’s nightlife is probably il Ritual disco , in Baja Sardinia. The spires of this granite castle evoke esoteric thoughts, while the nights in this historical facility founded in the 1970s offer a dense program of international guests and events that go on all night long.

Costa Smeralda’s best restaurants

TripAdvisor lists La Kustera among the top-rated restaurants of Costa Smerlada. Located in an old country house in Gallura, it is the perfect site to taste the local gastronomy in an elegant and discreet environment. Do not miss the chance to dine at Stelle D Stelle, Porto Cervo’s “first multi-starred restaurant” set in the Piazzetta. Ten Michelin Chefs take turns in the restaurant’s kitchen, creating ad hoc menus from 15 June to 11 September. If you’d rather dine on your yacht, choose Renato Pedrinelli’s high-quality catering service on Porto Cervo’so ld pier.

Phi Beach in Costa Smeralda has become a local institution in a very short time. Featuring floating jetties and a seawater pool, the site boasts the famous Chiringuito bar that serves aperitifs at sunset. After spending the date laying on the sunbeds of one of Gallura’s most up to date spots, the restaurants offers a choice of Mediterranean fish and shellfish preparations.

The must-visit beaches in Costa Smeralda

VIPs love to spend time in Costa Smeralda as much for its exclusive clubs as for its beaches . The best ones include:

  •     Il Piccolo e il Grande Pevero , 3 kilometers from Porto Cervo, boasts a shallow seabed and crystal-clear water;
  •     Cala Capriccioli , a tiny and wild cove of transparent waters surrounded by granite rocks and Mediterranean shrub. Before leaving, stop in Isola di Mortorio, the dreamy nature reserve located opposite the cove!

Costa Smeralda and gay bars

The nudist areas of the beaches of Liscia Ruja, La Cinta in San Teodoro, La Sciumara, l’Isola dei Gabbiani and Punta Nera in Palau are mostly gay destinations. There aren’t many men-only clubs in Costa Smeralda, which is regarded more as a heterosexual heaven. Occasionally El Peyote in Arzachena throws gay parties.

Do you find it hard to make your pick? You are right: each restaurants, disco, and lounge bar in Costa Smeralda is unique due to the charming atmospheres of these destinations resting by wonderful waters. Enjoy!
