£250m design for King Charles’ scrapped superyacht unveiled

London-based firm reveals their proposal for now-scrapped project, article bookmarked.

Find your bookmarks in your Independent Premium section, under my profile

The £250m design for King Charles’ superyacht that was scrapped last year has been unveiled.

Plans for the 125-metre Royal Yacht Britannia were previously confidential but have now been published by London-based firm Vitruvius Yachts.

The superyacht was initially set to sail by 2025, but in October last year it was reported chancellor Jeremy Hunt was planning on scrapping the plans as part of a package of spending cuts.

  • A seized superyacht shows up in Everett — minus one Russian oligarch owner

Paul Roberts

EVERETT — It’s not clear whether Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov had plans to visit Puget Sound this spring — the French Riviera is more the style of the U.S.-sanctioned mining and energy multibillionaire.

But Monday morning, the Amadea, a 348-foot, $300 million-plus superyacht said to be owned by Kerimov, arrived in the Port of Everett to have some work done at a local shipyard.

A sleek, white shark of a ship with a knifelike bow, raked profile and quarters for 16 guests and 36 crew, Amadea swanned past Everett’s industrial waterfront with a tug escort and all the made-for-TV glamour of an international celebrity fugitive. Kerimov, of course, was not on board.

In 2022, Amadea (“God’s love” in Latin) was seized in Fiji at the request of U.S. authorities who claim Kerimov has enabled Russian aggression in Ukraine and Syria. Money laundering and conspiracy were also alleged.

At the time, the seizure was hailed as a warning to “every corrupt Russian oligarch that they cannot hide — not even in the remotest part of the world,” as a deputy U.S. attorney general put it in a press statement .

But as any boat owner in this boat-focused community will tell you , seizing a superyacht is one thing. Maintaining its value as an asset is another — especially when the asset is the size of a ferry and equipped with a theater, a gym, beauty salon, teak decks, 30-foot-long pool, helipad and twin 5,766-horsepower diesels.

“They’re saying it’s costing us $7 million a year to keep it up,” said Chris Petersen, a retired fisherman who runs a metal coatings shop on West Marine View Drive, a few blocks from the port and who, like many here, has been following the superyacht saga since Monday.

Indeed, fuel, maintenance, insurance and salary for the crew of Amadea during its impoundment in San Diego ran around $740,000 a month, according to federal court filings by the Marshals Service.

In February, the Justice Department told a federal court it intended to halt this “excessive … drain on the public” purse by auctioning off Amadea, which the government claims Kerimov acquired in 2021.

But selling off this excessive drain has been complicated.

There is litigation challenging Amadea’s seizure because the vessel allegedly wasn’t owned by Kerimov, but by another Russian oligarch, who is not sanctioned, according to court papers.

Another complication, more relevant to Everett: Amadea’s insurance policy, according to court filings, requires service that can only be done by hauling the vessel out of the water — a job that appears to be slated for the dry dock facilities at Everett Ship Repair, on the port’s East Waterway.

Few details of the project have been shared. Port officials have referred all questions to Everett Ship Repair, whose vice president of service sales, Lane Richards, politely declined to comment.

But a Justice Department spokesperson confirmed Thursday that Amadea was indeed “in Washington for standard dry dock maintenance.”

And on Wednesday, the vessel in question could be seen berthed, like a slightly lost Imperial Starship, on the south side of Pier 3, adjacent to Everett Ship Repair’s dry dock and the Washington State Ferry Salish.

All the no-commenting has only added to the atmosphere of maritime intrigue and speculation in a town ordinarily unperturbed by big, secrecy-shrouded ships, including those at the nearby Everett Naval Station.

Many here wonder why the U.S. government spent the money to bring Amadea all the way to Everett, when there are dry dock facilities in San Diego, San Francisco and Portland; even Seattle is 5 nautical miles closer to San Diego.

Amadea’s fuel burn “is probably in the 8-to-10 gallons per mile range,” said Dennis Butterfield, a retired car dealership manager and former boat owner, as he kept an eye on the Russian superyacht Wednesday from a viewpoint on Warren Avenue. “That’s the United States government at work, if you ask me.”

Butterfield’s estimate was close: based on vessel specifications featured on the yachting website, YachCharterFleet , the 4,400-ton Amadea burns roughly 11 gallons per mile at a cruising speed of 15 mph.

The Justice Department declined to justify Amadea’s four-day journey from San Diego to Everett.

Such secrecy would likely suit Kerimov, who Forbes once described as “one of the most private Russian billionaires,” and who is also said to have close ties to the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The 58-year-old serves in the Russian Federation Senate, is reportedly worth nearly $11 billion and has owned villas on the French Riviera and elsewhere.

He may also have owned a rare Fabergé egg, according to accounts of the search of the Amadea after its seizure .

Beginning in 2017, Kerimov was listed by U.S. officials as one of a number of Russian oligarchs “who profit from the Russian government through corruption and its malign activity around the globe .”

In March 2022, after the FBI reportedly linked Kerimov to the Amadea , the vessel was seized under a program known as Task Force KleptoCapture and eventually sailed to San Diego under an American flag.

But Amadea’s more recent trip likely had less to do with the vessel’s checkered lineage than with a shortage of West Coast dry dock capacity, especially for large vessels.

Unlike the East Coast and the Gulf Coast, ship repair infrastructure on the West Coast is “is woefully undersized,” said Craig Hooper, a former naval ship building industry executive who writes and advises on security and defense issues.

In recent decades, several private shipyards with dry dock facilities have closed and building new capacity faces high costs and regulatory hurdles, Hooper said. As a result, “long transits to an open facility are relatively commonplace these days,” he added.

In the case of the Amadea, Hooper hypothesized, “the responsible party may have put the job out for bid and an Everett yard was the available, lowest-cost option.”

According to court filings, Amadea’s dry dock work is expected to cost $5.6 million and take two months.

By that time, federal officials may have sorted Amadea’s other complications.

Last fall, attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, the former head of state-owed oil company Rosneft, claimed Amadea isn’t owned by Kerimov, but by Khudainatov. Attorneys argue that since Khudainatov wasn’t under sanctions, the yacht was “not forfeitable, as it neither constitutes nor is derived from any unlawful activity.”

But federal prosecutors contend “that Khudainatov is just a straw owner put forward to disguise Kerimov’s ownership of the vessel,” according to an April 19 filing in a federal court in New York, where the case is ongoing.

In the meantime, Everett will take some pleasure in the Amadea’s august presence.

Port of Everett officials, though tight lipped about the vessel’s particulars, were clearly pleased by the message it sends of the port’s growing status as a maritime hub.

“Anything that puts Everett on the international map is a good thing!” said Kate Anderson, port spokesperson, in an email response to an inquiry about the Amadea.

Locals, too, appeared to be enjoying the celebrity by association.

“That magnitude of wealth — it’s just another world,” said Petersen, the retired fisherman.

Others wondered who would be foolish enough to buy a vessel whose ownership was being contested by Russian oligarchs.

But mostly, folks here appeared to sympathize with Uncle Sam’s desire to be rid of the costly, controversial craft.

That was the sentiment of John Mostrom, who had taken a break from mowing his lawn Wednesday to peer down at the Amadea from the Warren Avenue overlook.

“They say the two happiest days of a boat owner’s life,” Mostrom noted, “are when they buy the boat and when they sell it.”

Former pirate Johnny Depp returns to the screen as King Louis XV. But will audiences care?

It’s a long way from “Pirates of the Caribbean” to the Palace of Versailles.

But that’s the journey of Johnny Depp , who goes from playing an 18th-century pirate scoundrel to an 18th-century monarch, France’s King Louis XV, in the French-language film “Jeanne du Barry” ( in theaters Thursday ). The movie officially marks Depp's acting comeback from Hollywood limbo.

Think of "Jeanne du Barry" as a subtitled combination of “Napoleon” and “Pretty Woman," a stunningly costumed and photographed exploration of how a dynamic modern woman turns stereotypes and preconceptions upside down.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

The film opened the Cannes Film Festival last May, where a tense Depp told journalists , "I don't have much further need for Hollywood."

The star will no doubt prefer the publicity surrounding his screen return to the glaring spotlight ignited by his 2022 defamation case against his ex-wife, actress and model Amber Heard. Though a civil jury ultimately awarded Depp $10 million and Heard $2 million , the trial exposed shocking claims of mutual physical and emotional abuse.

Depp, 60, started out targeting a career in rock 'n' roll, and over the decades, he has played with icons ranging from Joe Perry to Jeff Beck. But his switch to acting, turbocharged by his ‘80s TV series “21 Jump Street,” led to three best actor Oscar nominations (no wins) and an iconic role in the “Pirates" franchise.

Here's what we know about Depp’s latest star turn.

Where is 'Jeanne du Barry' streaming?

"Jeanne du Barry" is in theaters only for five days (May 2-6). The movie will stream on Apple TV+ at a later date.

Does Johnny Depp speak French in his new movie 'Jeanne du Barry'?

Yes, Depp delivers all his lines in French in this French movie with English subtitles. His accent is excellent, although his lines are kept concise – more short statements than rambling speeches – to best keep the illusion that he's a native speaker.

Why does Depp, who is from Kentucky, speak French? From 1998 to 2012, he was in a relationship with French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis. The couple share two children and spent their time together shuttling between the U.S. and France.

What is Johnny Depp’s new movie 'Jeanne du Barry' about?

“Jeanne du Barry” is based on true events. The title character was a French commoner turned courtesan (a polite term for high-class prostitute) who lived from 1743 to 1793. She was eventually introduced to King Louis XV, who not only took her as a mistress but also grew deeply fond of the spirited, intelligent woman.

The relationship between the king and the courtesan gathered steam after the king’s wife died, but their love affair scandalized high society. As the French Revolution neared, upending the rule of monarchs, du Barry’s fate took an unexpected turn.

Who else is the cast of 'Jeanne du Barry'?

The true force behind “Jeanne du Barry” is Depp’s co-star, Maïwenn Aurélia Nedjma Le Besco, 48, known simply as Maïwenn. She plays du Barry, but also co-wrote and directed the film. Maïwenn, whose professional incarnations have included stand-up comedian, actress and filmmaker, has had a complex personal life.

She met French director Luc Besson (“The Fifth Element”) when she was just 12 (he was 29), married him at 16, and immediately had a daughter with him, Shanna. When she was 20 in 1996, Besson left her for his “Fifth Element” star Milla Jovovich.

Maïwenn stirred controversy when she was quoted in Britain's The Independent as saying Depp was "scary" and difficult to work with on the set. She later clarified those comments , saying she was simply referring to the actor's inherent star status.

Is Johnny Depp planning to make another ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie?

Speculation and rumors continue to swirl around whether Depp will ever return to his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, a perpetually drunk and exceedingly crafty pirate who pilots his Black Pearl while plundering treasure around the Caribbean. The movie series, based on a Disney theme park ride of the same name, ran from 2003 to 2017 and has grossed $4.5 billion worldwide.

But while another installment would provide a lucrative payday for Depp, fans should temper expectations. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer cryptically told ComicBook.com in March that “we're gonna reboot ‘Pirates.’ ” But whether Depp will be a part of such a comeback remains unclear.

During the Depp v. Heard trial, the actor was asked by Heard's lawyer Ben Rottenborn : "The fact is, Mr. Depp, if Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a 'Pirates of the Caribbean' film? Correct?"

Depp's curt response: “That is true.”

This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Former pirate Johnny Depp returns to the screen as King Louis XV. But will audiences care?

Johnny Depp plays France's (real) King Louis XV, whose affair with Jeanne du Barry scandalized Paris society. "Jeanne du Barry" finds Depp, who was once partnered with French singer Vanessa Paradis, acting exclusively in French.

King Charles' New Portrait Has a Close Connection to Kate Middleton and Prince William's Kids

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis may have inspired their grandfather's latest photo choice to mark the first anniversary of his coronation

Stephanie Petit is a Royals Editor, Writer and Reporter at PEOPLE.

Buckingham Palace/PA Wire

King Charles and Queen Camilla are starring in a new portrait to mark the first anniversary of their coronation, and there's a sweet connection to his grandchildren.

Buckingham Palace released a health update about the monarch on April 26, revealing that he would soon be returning to public royal duties after staying largely behind the scenes while he undergoes cancer treatment , a diagnosis revealed in February.

The announcement was accompanied by a new portrait of the King, 75, and Queen, 76, to mark a year since their coronation on May 6. The snap was captured in the Buckingham Palace garden on April 10, the day after the royal couple's 19th wedding anniversary , by portrait photographer Millie Pilkington.

The photographer wrote on Instagram , "Feeling truly honored to have been asked to take this portrait of Their Majesties the King and Queen earlier this month in Buckingham Palace Gardens. And delighted that His Majesty the King is recovering so well."

While this is the first time an image of King Charles and Queen Camilla was credited to Pilkington, they aren't her first royal subjects.

Chris Jackson/Getty

Just last year, Pilkington was the photographer for the official pictures released to celebrate the birthdays of Kate Middleton and Prince William 's three children, Prince George ,  Princess Charlotte  and  Prince Louis . Pilkington also got behind the camera for the sweet photos of Prince William surrounded by his kids that were released to mark Father's Day in 2023.

Pilkington described herself on her website as a "portrait photographer with a passion for photographing children," making her a perfect fit for snapping the Prince and Princess of Wales' little ones.

Analyzing her Father's Day photo of Prince William with George, Charlotte and Louis, she wrote, "I love how this portrait captures the love the children have for their father Prince William. With Prince Louis hugging his father’s neck in true joy, whilst Princess Charlotte and Prince George, with their hands on Prince William’s knees, and laughing adoringly up at him, you can see the adoration they have for their father and the fun they have with him."

Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty Images

Two photos by Pilkington were released to celebrate Prince Louis' fifth birthday in April 2023, including one of Princess Kate pushing her youngest child around in a wheelbarrow.

"Of my two portraits released by the Palace, this image of Louis in the wheelbarrow with HRH The Princess of Wales, laughing down towards him, is my favorite," the photographer said. "It not only captures Louis’ spirit and cheek but also the relationship he has with his mother and the fun they have together. You can’t but help feeling joy, love and laughter when you look at this photo."

Princess Charlotte had a costar for her eighth birthday photo in May 2023: the family's dog, Orla!

"Feeling truly blessed to have been asked by the Princess of Wales to take this birthday portrait of Princess Charlotte as she turns 8, and even more so that TRH the Prince and Princess of Wales have shared this with you all," Pilkington said. "She looks as happy as she does beautiful, as she cuddles their black working cocker spaniel, Orla in a garden at Windsor."

Pilkington was also called in for a milestone moment in July 2023 for Prince George: his 10th birthday portrait .

"Honoured to share with you my latest commission for the Prince and Princess of Wales: a birthday portrait of Prince George as he turns 10," she said. "As with my previous portraits of Prince Louis, Princess Charlotte & Prince William, I took this portrait of Prince George in the grounds of the Windsor Estate, a few months later. I love how this image captures the confidence, maturity and charm of Prince George — and gives us a glimpse of what lies in store as a future king."

Buckingham Palace's encouraging update about King Charles revealed that he and Queen Camilla will visit a cancer treatment center to meet medical specialists and patients on April 30, the first of several engagements planned for the King in upcoming weeks. The royal couple are also set to host a state visit for the Emperor and Empress of Japan in June at Buckingham Palace.

A spokesperson said that the monarch's cancer treatment will continue, but "doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that the King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties."

King Charles' attendance at other summer events on the royal calendar such as Trooping the Colour remains unconfirmed, with a palace spokesperson noting that "any public-facing engagements will be announced nearer the time in the usual way and will remain subject to doctors’ advice."

'A lot of subtext going on here': Why King Charles gave daughter-in-law Catherine a rare honour

Princess of wales is 1st member of royal family appointed to order of the companions of honour.

Hello, royal watchers. This is your regular dose of royal news and analysis. Reading this online?  Sign up here  to get this delivered to your inbox.

When King Charles awarded Catherine, Princess of Wales, a rare honour the other day, it was more than a recognition of her role within the Royal Family.

It also drew attention to the warm relationship that has developed between Charles and his daughter-in-law since she joined the family through marriage to Prince William 13 years ago this week .

"There's a lot of subtext going on here, both on a personal level and on a professional level," said Justin Vovk, a royal commentator and a PhD candidate at McMaster University in Hamilton who specializes in the history of the monarchy, in an interview.

On the personal level, Charles and Catherine get along splendidly, he said.

But there are also larger family dynamics at play that reflect subtle changes over time and in the new reign of Charles.

"This is a public show of support that [Diana], Princess of Wales, didn't really get from the late Queen," said Vovk.

Members of the Royal Family, including Catherine, Princess of Wales, Prince George, Prince Louis and King Charles, wave to well-wishers after attending a church service.

"I think this is really reinforcing [Charles and Catherine's] personal relationship, but also the fact that this is a united Royal Family. The drama, the tensions of the 1980s and 1990s, are not looking to be repeated, and the mistakes of that era are not looking to be repeated."

Vovk also sees a contrast between the way the relationship between the sovereign and the Princess of Wales was handled under Elizabeth versus how her son Charles is handling it now.

"When William and Catherine got married, Catherine just seemed to get it. She seemed to get what the Royal Family was about, she seemed to get what the expectations, what the job would be, and she's integrated so seamlessly that I think Charles is probably, on some level, really grateful for that."

With the award, Catherine becomes the first member of the Royal Family appointed to the Order of the Companions of Honour.

The order was founded in 1917 by King George V to recognize outstanding achievements in public service, the arts, sciences and medicine. Other members include actor Maggie Smith, musicians Paul McCartney and Elton John and artist David Hockney.

Three adults and two children stand on a balcony.

While the award may not "seem like much to the average person," Vovk said, considering that Catherine has only been Princess of Wales for less than two years, "for the family, that's a big gesture."

Judith Rowbotham, a social and cultural scholar and visiting research professor at the University of Plymouth in southwestern England, saw a personal element to the award that comes as Catherine is undergoing preventative treatment for cancer.

"I think [Charles] took an opportunity to do something that would give her a boost and I think that the timing has more to do with that than anything else," Rowbotham said in an interview.

Two people hold irons as a child looks on.

Observers have long noted the strong bond between Catherine and Charles, and see the possibility of it being reinforced through their shared experiences with cancer diagnosis and treatment.

"It is clearly mutual fondness, mutual respect, mutual comfort on both sides, and I think you could say that it's undoubtedly been a major factor in improving relations between William and Charles," said Rowbotham.

She also sees Catherine — along with Queen Camilla — having an effect on Charles.

"Charles has, since his marriage to Camilla and since Catherine came along, [become more] approachable," she said.

"Now we look for something that's in our leaders [that is] more approachable in terms of them being relatable, and that's what I think Catherine and Camilla have both brought."

A return to public duties with a personal touch

A seated person holds the hand of another person who is seated while receiving intravenous treatment.

The destination chosen for King Charles to make his return to official public duties after his cancer diagnosis three months ago seemed both deliberate and fitting.

As he spoke with patients at a cancer centre in central London earlier this week, the 75-year-old monarch talked of the "shock" of hearing a cancer diagnosis, and said he was feeling "all right, thanks. Not too bad," the BBC reported .

Charles's visit to the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre had echoes of the engagements he and other royals often make. But there was also a sense this wasn't quite like those other times members of his family meet hospital patients and health-care workers.

"He's been campaigning for many years, been working with cancer charities for many years and making appearances like this, but this has a sort of different feel now because he's coming to this as someone who really understands this from a personal perspective," royal commentator Victoria Murphy told the CBC's Briar Stewart on Tuesday.

The announcement in early February of Charles's diagnosis of an undisclosed form of cancer came after he was treated for an unrelated benign prostate condition.

Specifics of his treatment have not been released, but a Buckingham Palace spokesman said "doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that the King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties."

King Charles visits cancer centre in 1st appearance since treatment

Just how that resumption will unfold remains unclear, but caution is expected to be a watchword over the next several weeks.

"I think that his doctors and the Queen will be devoting their efforts to making sure that it's as carefully managed [as possible] so he doesn't exhaust himself … because treatment such as he's undergoing does take it out of you," said Rowbotham.

"Charles very clearly would love to fling himself back and do as much as humanly possible, and the Queen [and] the medical advisers are going to say, 'Hold your horses.'"

Scrutiny will fall upon upcoming regular royal events, including spring garden parties and Trooping the Colour — the military procession marking the monarch's official birthday in mid-June — and the extent to which Charles is present and takes part.

That Charles would choose to make his return at a cancer centre also reflects an emerging hallmark of his reign, Vovk suggested.

"We see these more personal touches with this monarchy," Vovk said.

A person talks with people standing in a line.

"Under the late Queen, a return to duty like this would have been more with … the expected ceremonial functions of the Crown. But we are seeing more of these causes that are personally affecting the Royal Family that in turn are also affecting millions of people in Britain and around the world."

Vovk expects there will be similar visits and engagements down the road.

"I think it all makes sense, it fits and I think we're probably going to see more things in this vein."

As serious as a visit to a cancer centre is, eagle-eyed royal watchers were also seeing a bit of self-effacing humour in Charles's appearance on Tuesday — the tie he was wearing and its pattern of little dinosaurs, reportedly a gift from grandson Prince Louis.

" I think that was carefully chosen to bring humour to the situation," said Rowbotham, who noted that the visit to the cancer centre was also an opportunity for Charles to send a message that people can get through a negative medical diagnosis and be encouraged.

'Indefatigable' Princess Anne visits B.C.

A woman in a naval uniform salutes.

One look at the jam-packed itinerary and it's easy to suss out which member of the Royal Family is undertaking a whirlwind working visit to British Columbia this weekend.

There are engagements that reflect her longstanding personal interests, along with ones that focus on her dedication to honouring military and naval service.

  • Princess Anne takes part in ceremony for new Pacific fleet ship

And then there is just the sheer number of events Princess Anne is attending after her arrival in Vancouver on Friday on a visit hosted by Maritime Forces Pacific of the Royal Canadian Navy.

"She is indefatigable," said Rowbotham, who sees Anne channelling her great-grandmother, Queen Mary, who had similar stamina.

"She will have been happy to pack in as much as possible and I think that's just Princess Anne — it's business as usual."

Long known for her down-to-earth attitude and matter-of-fact manner, Anne is back in Canada just months after two separate and similarly quick but jam-packed visits last year.

This time, among other events, she attended the commissioning ceremony Friday in Vancouver for HMS Max Bernays in her role as commodore in chief for Canadian Fleet Pacific.

On Saturday on Vancouver Island, her engagements include visits to a military family resource centre, the Maritime Museum of British Columbia, which was founded with an initial donation from her late father, Prince Philip, and an urban agriculture project.

For those looking to welcome Anne during the visit, there is much anticipation and pride in the chance to have her see what their groups do.

  • Royal Fascinator A no-fuss royal: Why Princess Anne's profile could be on the rise

"We feel so lucky. It's such an amazing opportunity for our organization," said Liz Gagel, acting executive director of the Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association, in an interview.

Anne, an avid equestrian who competed in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, is touring the association's riding facility on Sunday. She will also watch as riders demonstrate how the association has supported them.

A horse and rider approach a jump.

"She knows what the connection between horses and people is like," said Gagel. "So I think she understands in her heart what we do and how special it is having that human-equine connection."

Gagel welcomes the potential Anne's visit has to draw attention to the organization's work.

"I really hope it brings a little bit more recognition to equine-assisted services, because it is such an important therapy that we provide. And I want more people to understand how important it is to our community. And hopefully it'll come with a few more people connecting to our organization and hopefully a few more funders or donors."

Princess Anne | Adrienne Arsenault Reports

On Sunday, Anne is also attending the Battle of the Atlantic commemorative service at the B.C. Legislature and visiting the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in Oak Bay, where she is presenting prizes at its Spring Dinghies Regatta for young sailors.

"She is an avid sailor and a huge champion for sports," Dale Gann, the club's vice commodore, said in an interview.

"It's really a great honour to have her attend and view and meet the participants and the moms and dads of those aspiring sailors…. They're quite excited about it, as we are."

Gann sees a particular opportunity for the young sailors to be inspired by Anne.

"To have a past Olympian on property that's a sailor is an incredible mentor [and] champion for them."

Happy birthday — with photos by mom

As controversy swirled in March around the doctored photo of Catherine and her children that was retracted by news agencies, there was additional curiosity: would family photos she takes continue to be issued to mark family milestones such as birthdays?

The answer came — twice — in the past couple of weeks, as photos Catherine took were made public as Prince Louis turned six on April 23 and Princess Charlotte turned nine on Thursday.

But observers were quick to note that the photos weren't released as they had been in the past: at midnight and in time for the morning papers in the U.K.

"It's clearly sending a message with a gentle snub to the media, especially the U.K. media," Rowbotham said via email. "A photo has not been released for the morning headlines, so any release will be for Royal Family supporters and not to assist the media in print, online or visual/audio."

A composite of closeup photos of a child lying on the ground and another leaning against flowers.

It's a "clever and balanced" strategy, Rowbotham said.

"It firmly signals that the Waleses are in control over the release of images of their family and are not allowing media criticism of the princess as photographer/editor to force them to bow to pressure to use professional photographers."

It's also, Rowbotham said, implicit that King Charles and Queen Camilla support Prince William and Catherine in their strategy.

  • What's wrong with this picture? Plenty, say experts

There is also the sense that the photos of Louis and Charlotte were deliberately chosen to offset speculation any editing was going on.

"There are very deliberate photographic elements in this portrait [of Charlotte] that have been used to ensure that it would be extremely difficult to Photoshop," Vovk said, noting for example the use of the portrait filter and the very clear foreground and a bit of blur in the background.

"There's clearly a bit of wind in the portrait because her hair is blowing a bit and so things like her hand are all positioned in such a way that [for] anyone who wants to zoom in on them, it would be nearly impossible for something to be edited there."

And in that, Vovk sees a message that "we've learned our lesson" and "we're making sure to do things differently moving forward."

Royally quotable

An adult kneels at a table while talking with a child and another adult.

"Women and girls pay the highest price in terms of human cost when it comes to the way that they are affected, the way that they can be used as weapons of war."

— Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, in a speech during a visit to Ukraine .

Sophie met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his wife during the first trip to Ukraine by a British royal since the conflict with Russia began.

While the trip on behalf of the British Foreign Office came as a surprise, Sophie's attention in particular on the plight of women who are victims of sexual violence in conflict zones did not. It is a subject she has long been focusing on.

"This was, if you like, soft diplomacy at work," Rowbotham said. "She said nothing controversial that could be negatively picked up on. She talked to women. She talked to children. And it has been very positively reported internationally."

Disney on Monday released the first trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King .

Directed by Barry Jenkins , the music-filled film serves as both an origin story and follow-up to Jon Favreau ’s 2019 photorealistic movie  The Lion King . That film was based on the 1994 Disney animated classic of the same name.

The new film, which hits theaters Dec. 20, will tell the backstory of Simba’s father, Mufasa, an orphan who grew up to be a wise, powerful and compassionate ruler.

The official logline is as follows: “ Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka — the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny — their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.”

Aaron Pierre voices the title character (voiced by James Earl Jones in both of the previous films), while Kelvin Harrison Jr. voices his brother, Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor in the 2019 film and Jeremy Irons in the 1994 animated classic), though he’s listed in the credits as Taka, a lion prince with a bright future who accepts Mufasa into his family as a brother.

Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen will return as Timon and Pumbaa, respectively, reprising their roles from Favreau’s 2019 movie. That movie grossed a total of $1.7 billion at the global box office to become the top-grossing Disney-branded film of all time.

Additional casting includes Braelyn Rankins, Theo Somolu, Folake Olowofoyeku, Joanna Jones, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Abdul Salis and Dominique Jennings.

The script was written by Jeff Nathanson, who also wrote the script for Favreau’s film.

“Elton John. Tim Rice. Hans Zimmer. Lebo M. Mark Mancina. Beyoncé, Labrinth, Ilya Salmanzadeh. Beau Black, Ford Riley, the incredible music team on ‘The Lion Guard,’ and so many musical contributors over the years,” Miranda said. “ The Lion King has an incredible musical legacy with music from some of the greatest songwriters around, and I’m humbled and proud to be a part of it. It’s been a joy working alongside Barry Jenkins to bring Mufasa’s story to life, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience this film in theaters.”

Earlier this month, Jenkins was on hand at CinemaCon in Las Vegas to debut the first teaser trailer f or theater owners.

“It’s an expansive adventure,” he told attendees, adding: “Audiences can expect so many things in this film — an epic story and a comedy with plenty of familiar faces. There are some absolutely hilarious moments and some with extreme gravitas.”
