Skip Loch Ness: Lake Champlain Has Its Very Own Sea Serpent

  • Lake Champlain boasts pristine beaches, water sports, and even a legendary sea serpent, Champ, akin to Loch Ness.
  • "Champ" sightings date back to the 1600s, rooted in Native American folklore and French explorer Samuel de Champlain's account.
  • The lake's unique ecosystem celebrates Champ, with ferries crossing regularly and a baseball team donning the serpent as mascot.

Lake Champlain runs 120 miles along and across the border of New York and Vermont and even stretches north to Quebec. Given its quite literal expansive reach, the lake is a popular destination in the Northeastern US and southern Canada. Visitors are spoiled by the lake's pristine freshwater beaches, a plethora of water sports activities, and even a shipwreck or two to explore .

However, one of Lake Champlain's (literal) biggest claims to fame is Champ, the lake's resident sea serpent/monster . Not unlike the famous Loch Ness Monster in Scotland, stories and sightings of Champ throughout history have both puzzled and awed. Does a sea serpent really live within the depths of this beloved freshwater lake? Or is he a thing of cryptozoology dreams? Can visitors see Champ? We took a deep dive (pun intended) to find out!

Loch Ness, And 9 Other Destinations Where You Might Find Monsters

Loch Ness isn't the only place to center around a cryptid. There are supposedly monsters all over the world!

A Brief History Of Lake Champlain And "Champ"

While sightings of "champ" as we know him today date to 1609, he was known by another name for centuries before.

Champlain might be one of the cleanest lakes on the East Coast , but it harbors secrets.

Samuel de Champlain, French cartographer and the modern namesake of the lake, is said to have first laid eyes on Champ in 1609, but versions of Champ existed well before the French arrival. Native history explains that the lake was the chosen resting place of Odzihozo , a spiritual being borne out of the earth's creation.

From an aerial view, it is said that rock formations in Lake Champlain resemble the silhouette of a seated man; it is Odzihozo curling up to rest. This imbued a sense of spiritual importance into the lake, known as "Bitawbagok," or "the waters in between" in the Abenaki language. This lake has, for millennia, proved a powerful place for the native people.

Among the revered mystical qualities the lake held, the Abenaki described a giant snake-like creature that resembled a "horned serpent" that lived in its waters. Known as " Gitaskog ," it is said that the earliest French colonists were warned by the Abenaki about this creature, and de Champlain would allegedly find out just how colossal the monster was.

"Champ may have come to life in 1609 by the Samuel de Champlain, but the Iroquois and Abenaki have his story beat by several generations with tales of Gitaskog." — Lianna Tedesco , Managing Editor for TheTravel.com, Vermont resident

As a cartographer, others found de Champlain's account to be viable, as he was unlikely to confuse foreign rock formations or fallen trees for a monster. No, he distinctly saw (allegedly), a 20-foot-long serpent with a horse-like head. By the early to mid-19th century, stories of the now-dubbed "Champ, the Lake Monster" reached far and wide.

Even the New York Times reported on Champ sightings in an 1873 account when railroad workers said that they had seen a long serpent with silver scales in the waters of Lake Champlain.

And sightings only increased over time. As centuries went by, and technology advanced, some lucky witnesses have even captured Champ on camera! Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, scores of people claimed to have photographs of Champ, and documentarians have visited time and time again in hopes of getting the serpent on camera.

In 2023, fishers even alleged that an unusually large sonar reading that popped up on their radar showed a serpent-like creature in the lake's depths. Perhaps it was one of the strange shipwrecks at the bottom of the lake ? Or maybe it was a large sea serpent! As Champ's existence has been debated, dissected, and analyzed for years, it's clear that the beloved monster is as part of the lake's legacy and history as de Champlain's mapping of its geography.

How You Can See Champ

As a part of the lake's ecosystem in more ways than one, champ-related activities are a unique draw to lake champlain.

In the 1980s, Champ was officially recognized as a protected entity of the lake by the states of Vermont and New York as well as Port Henry, the "safe haven" watery inlet Champ can find respite in. Champ is a celebrated Lake Champlain celebrity, and he is a big part of the identity of the nearby community. So much so, that a variety of Champ-themed landmarks sprinkle the shores of Lake Champlain, and he pops up time and time again in mascot form throughout the region!

"When I first moved to Vermont, my first introduction to Champ was an incredibly life-like sculpture on Lake Champlain's waterfront. Since then, I've seen the serpent immortalized in our local baseball team, as the mascot for several local businesses, the subject of Lake Champlain authors, and even in the odd story from the locals claiming to have seen him while out fishing. Champ isn't just a legend, the serpent is part of Champlain life." — Lianna Tedesco

Take the Lake Champlain Ferry

A fixture of Lake Champlain as much as Champ is, the Lake Champlain ferries make routine trips across the lake from Vermont to New York and vice versa. Servicing Plattsburgh and Essex, NY and Grand Isle and Charlotte, VT, the ferry is an efficient and enjoyable way of getting around and seeing the beauty of Lake Champlain from the water.

Perhaps, if you're lucky, you may spot a glimpse of Champ while you're out there! Over 600 people have allegedly spotted Champ, and hopping on the ferry to pursue a sighting has been a favorite pastime of school children during the summer for decades.

See Champ With Your Own Eyes... At The Baseball Game!

If you're hoping for a guaranteed Champ sighting, then your best bet is to meet him at a ball game! The Vermont Lake Monsters , a local summer baseball team who, up until 2020, were part of the minor leagues, are another beloved fixture of the Lake Champlain community.

And, you guessed it, their mascot is none other than a particularly cutesy rendition of Champ, himself. While their logo shows off a more fearsome version of Champ, the Champ you'll see at the game is a perpetually smiling, goofy baseball fanatic.

The Vermont Lake Monsters play from May to August both at Centennial Field in Burlington, VT and at away games throughout the Northeast. Their biggest rival for the best cryptid mascot? The Norwich Sea Unicorns. Tickets are often reasonably priced under the $20 mark, so this is a great, inexpensive activity for the entire family, and the best spot in town to see Champ. If you only have 24 hours in Burlington, VT during the summer, make this one of your stops!

Happy Hunting: 10 U.S. Sites Where Legendary Monsters (Supposedly) Thrive

Looking for where the wild things are? These destinations will pique anyone’s interest.

While Champ may not be "real" in the sense that there are definitive sightings, he's very real to Lake Champlain and its residents and history. He's a beloved community member and a fantastical entity that many folks in the region bond over, from baseball fans to school children.

Studying Lake Champlain's health aboard the RV Marcelle Melosira

L ake Champlain Sea Grant, along with the University of Vermont and the Lake Champlain Basin Program, invited local media for a trip on their research vessel on Thursday to learn more about how recent flooding is impacting the watershed.

Early indicators show that last week's flood is not impacting lake health as much as last year's.

However, all of the extra water and everything that gets caught up in it on its way to the lake is still causing problems.

The UVM Research Vessel Marcelle Melosira has been cruising Lake Champlain for around a year, collecting data on the lake and how rivers and streams — from Cabot to Rutland, as well as from Saranac Lake and Quebec — all play a role in lake health.

The research vessel runs all kinds of tests to monitor water clarity, track invasive species and erosion, and more. College interns also help the researchers on the boat.

Plus, when it comes to flooding, monitoring the lake's water levels can help researchers learn a lot about the aftermath of major weather events.

"Last year on July 11, it was the highest flow we'd seen since 1990, the highest daily flow we'd ever seen since monitoring began. And, last week on July 11, the same day, just a year later, it was very high, toward Lake Champlain, but it was the 10th highest we'd ever seen," said Dr. Matthew Vaughan, chief scientist of the Lake Champlain Basin Program. "Actually, if you compare that to the December flooding, that was the fourth highest we've ever seen. So the peak flow in Winooski was actually higher in the December 2023 flooding than it was in the storm last week."

Additionally, the research helps to track harmful sediment deposits, like phosphorous, especially when they are brought in high concentrations from flooding.

"It's about six times more phosphorus that we can capture on our floodplains than during those smaller, regularly occurring events," said Dr. Rebecca Diehl, Department of Geography and Geosciences, UVM, about this most recent flood.

Despite human efforts to reduce plastic in the basin, floods can also move a lot of micro and larger plastics into the lake.

"We also are getting water into a lot of parts of the watershed where we don't think about that cup or, you know, somebody's Tupperware in their kitchen and their house that's been flooded," said Dr. Anne Jefferson, Lake Champlain Sea Grant director. "Now, this is plastic pollution that could be making it to a lake."

Plus, while looking out for the watershed, the team said it hopes to inspire younger scientists to keep up the hard work.

"The most interesting thing for me is just learning about each person's research and then, hopefully, using that knowledge further along in my school life and then in my career after the fact," said Bo Barile, a UVM summer intern working onboard.

In addition to helping with monitoring things like beach closures, all of the data collected on the research vessel can hopefully teach us more about how to build sustainable systems that can help reduce the impacts of future floods.

Aquatic Invasive Species Part 1: What are they?

By Gabriella Marchesani July 04, 2024

Lake Champlain is home to 51 non-native species. In this series, we will discuss what those species are, how they impact the lake and its economy, and how to manage them. This series is a partnership between Lake Champlain Sea Grant and Lake Champlain Basin Program, developed and written by Gabriella Marchesani, a science writer at LCSG and a boat launch steward at LCBP. In this column, she will reflect on encounters at the boat launch, interview experts to clear up misconceptions, and prepare basin residents for some incoming species.

Before we dive into aquatic invasive species (AIS) and their impacts on Lake Champlain, what exactly is an invasive species? As an aquatic invasive species boat launch steward, I receive an array of responses from boaters, scuba divers, anglers, birders, and concerned citizens launching their watercraft into Lake Champlain. Married couples amusingly ask, “can we get rid of this invasive?” while pointing at their spouses. Anglers often complain about their fishing competitors, the double-crested cormorants. Older Lake Champlain locals reflect on the time zebra mussels were unheard of 40 years ago, while now found growing on anything they can attach their bristles to. Invasive species are defined as non-native species who cause harm to the economy, the ecosystem, or to human health in the new environment they colonize..

Non-native species in Lake Champlain are not necessarily bad! In fact, most fish species bringing anglers to Lake Champlain, including bass, salmon, and perch, are non-native species. While introduced in Lake Champlain, these species have not negatively impacted the aquatic ecosystem and become invasive. Others have become problematic. Of the 51 established non-native aquatic species in Lake Champlain, including plants, animals, and pathogens, about a quarter are currently considered invasive. Most of them were first introduced in the 1800s, via the Great Lakes by ocean cargo ships mainly coming from Europe and Asia.

In response to the threats AIS pose, environmental organizations have taken measures to control their spread. But why is invasive species management necessary? Why should we prioritize one species over the other? Can we prevent the arrival of new invasives? Why have some introduced species evolved to coexist in non-native ecosystems? These are all valid questions when considering invasive management, especially considering humans are responsible for spreading them.

Food Web Dynamics

While quantifying the impacts of AIS on Lake Champlain is difficult, the increase of several invasives has threatened the abundance and diversity of natives, impacting the way species interact in the lake, or the food web. Aquatic invasives play stressor roles in food webs by altering the flow of energy, and thus the state of the ecosystem. For example, invasive spiny waterfleas eat the native zooplankton that young sport fish such as bass, walleye and yellow perch feed on.

Think of these relationships as a seesaw with all pathways of production and energy scattered across each side of the beam. If you add a non-native species to one side, the beam might still remain balanced, and trophic relationships can continue to play out in a balanced manner. However, if a non-native species exists too far on one side of the balance, it can disproportionately impact the food web. When native species lack defense mechanisms against invasive species, invasives can dominate their niches, often resulting in a decline in biodiversity. In the Great Lakes, invasive alewife fish species are known to throw off the balance by consuming native zooplankton, which can deplete the food source for native fish. This decline in native zooplankton and preying on larvae can disrupt the balance and lead to a decline in native fish populations. Alewives invaded Lake Champlain in the early 2000s. While they have outcompeted native smelt, scientists have found they’ve become the primary food source for Atlantic salmon and lake trout, and potentially a primary driver for the wild lake trout population rebound.

Recreation, Tourism, and Local Economies

Lake Champlain brings many tourists from across the United States and Canada during the summer for boating, kayaking, and swimming—all activities impacted by invasives. Aquatic invasive plants such as Eurasian watermilfoil form thick mats in shallow areas of a lake which can foul propellers, jam impellers, and cause bilge-pump failure in boats. Dense mats of invasive water chestnut result in losses to shoreline property values . Zebra mussels, an invasive mollusk, create dense colonies that can clog water intake pipes, boat motors, and foul boat hulls and engines. They are also known for their sharp shells when stepped on, cutting swimmers’ feet.

The list of threats posed by AIS goes on as they continue to outcompete native species. Overall, considering that invasive species are the second leading cause of biodiversity loss , after habitat destruction, monitoring their impact on Lake Champlain is necessary. We can ensure the protection of wildlife and a healthy state of the lake by preventing the spread of AIS and supporting native species. Fun Fact About Me I generally prefer cloudy weather over sunny weather.
Contact Miller Center at Lakeside

Assistant Graphic Designer Jason Trahan holds a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from Castleton University as well as an associate’s degree in Graphics Multimedia & Web Design from the New England Institute of Technology. Before getting hired by Champlain College, Jason had just finished his bachelor’s degree and was actively working to grow his creative portfolio, making this position a significant step towards his goal of being a professional graphic designer.

Jason lives and breathes design. Growing up, his lack of traditional artistic experience led him to express himself through simple drawings like symbols, icons, and logos that he’d either seen around or came up with himself. No school folder or homework assignment was safe from his doodles. Now, branding and logo design are his favorite kinds of design, constantly thinking about what his brand is and how he wants to be perceived by others. Some of his favorite brands from a design perspective are Boundary Supply, Starbucks, Polestar, and Zero Gravity.

Throughout his education, Jason was responsible for the completion of many multi-faceted graphic design projects. One of the most notable was leading a small group of other graphic design students in a rebranding project for the town of Poultney Vermont, as President of the Castleton Content Lab, Castleton University’s graphic design club. Since starting at Champlain, Jason has held a key role, assisting with the ongoing development of the college’s website, and producing promotional materials.

When he’s not building web pages or designing mailers, Jason likes to spend his time admiring the world around him. Camera in hand, Jason is always looking for the perfect weather and light to practice his photography skills. On particularly nasty days, you’ll find him in a cozy coffee shop watching sailing videos on youtube and editing photos. Jason also enjoys hiking, camping, cooking, listening to rock music, eating cider donuts, and exploring the lake on his family’s boat.
