MADRID (AP) — A boat carrying a group of migrants ran into trouble off the coast of southeastern Spain killing at least three people and several others were believed missing, authorities said Friday.

Spain’s Maritime Rescue Service said in a statement that two survivors and three bodies were found on a partially sunken boat off the coast near the town of Motril. The two survivors said the boat had been carrying 12 people when it set sail from Algeria six days ago, leading authorities to suspect seven others may have fallen into the sea.

The two survivors and three bodies were taken by helicopter to the mainland.

Tens of thousands of migrants from sub-Saharan countries fleeing poverty, conflict and instability in West Africa try to reach Spain each year in large open boats. Most go to the Canary Islands in the Atlantic , while others from Morocco , Algeria and Middle Eastern countries try to cross the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean to mainland Spain. Several thousand die making the hazardous journey.

The Interior Ministry says 14, 405 migrants arrived in Spain by boat between Jan. 1 and Mar. 15, up from 3,528 in the same period last year. The vast majority arrived on the Canary Island route.

The steel hull comprises 30,000 individual “cells” that would help keep Pangeos afloat. The tera-turtle can sail around the world nonstop sans emissions on account of a virtually endless supply of green energy. The vessel is covered in solar panels that generate clean power from the sun for the hotel load and propulsion system. Powered by nine electric motors of 16,800 hp each, Pangeos could cruise at a maximum speed of 5 knots. The “wings” could also draw more power from the waves and wind.

Onboard, Pangeos is a mix between a five-star resort, a cruise ship and a city. Lazzarini says she can accommodate as many as 60,000 guests via a combination of villas and apartments. Other highlights include a rooftop mall, sprawling gardens, several pools and a supersized beach club. Naturally, the yacht is fitted with helipads, hangars and marinas to store choppers, toys and tenders.

In terms of construction, Lazzarini specified “the terayacht needs a terashipyard.” Essentially, Pangeos is too big to be built at an existing yard and thus would need a custom facility. Saudi Arabia has been put forward as a potential location. The designers estimate the vessel could be delivered in eight years at a cost of $8 billion.

The superyacht world is speculating that Mark Zuckerberg just bought this 118-meter boat

• The 118-meter superyacht Launchpad made her maiden voyage last week.
• The yacht world is speculating that her owner is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
• Here's what we know about the luxury vessel.

In the world of superyachts , privacy is the most valuable asset. It can be next to impossible to discern the details of a superyacht transaction — and that's particularly true if the vessel in question is worth nine figures.

Yet some in the boat blogging world are speculating that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the new owner of Launchpad, a megayacht currently moored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after she made her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St Maarten last week. Launchpad clocks in at 118 meters long, about nine meters shorter than Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru .

The transaction could not be confirmed, with yacht world insiders declining to share what they know and representatives for Zuckerberg not responding to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the past, reports about Zuckerberg owning superyacht Ulysses have proven false.

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to BI. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

But Zuckerberg's name has been connected to Launchpad for a few months now, beginning in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands.

Then, earlier in March, yachting bloggers like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution started speculating that he officially snagged the boat, originally built for a sanctioned Russian businessman, at a $300 million price tag. (While that's a seemingly huge amount, it's still less than 0.2% of Zuckerberg's $177 billion net worth.)

Another clue that might point to US ownership is that the yacht bears the flag of the Marshall Islands, a US territory and commonplace for American buyers to register their ships, according to public marine tracking.

If Zuckerberg were to have bought Launchpad, he would join a cohort of superyacht-owning tech billionaires . Along with Bezos, the likes of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have purchased impressive boats with even more impressive amenities.

SuperYacht Times , an industry publication and intelligence platform, has some of the best images of the yacht. Photos show a swimming pool on her main deck and a large helipad.

While less is known of the interior, a vessel of her size can likely sleep dozens of guests and crew and may have amenities like an expansive gym where Zuckerberg could practice his jiu-jitsu or a spa with a massage area. We suspect there's also space for plenty of toys — which could include his viral hydrofoil foil .

HOLLAND, MI — Described as a “ high-end home on the water ,” Tiara Yachts is designing its biggest and most expensive boat yet.

Thomas Slikkers, Tiara Yachts president and CEO, spoke to MLive recently about the EX 60 inside the company’s Holland headquarters, 725 E. 40th St. A portion of the interview is shared in the video.

With a roughly $3.5 million price tag , the EX 60 will feature a customizable cockpit with plush seating, an outdoor breakfast bar and two bathrooms. It boasts a well-appointed kitchen, and the propulsion system has extras such as assisted docking. Below deck, three sleeping areas can accommodate six adults.

“We feel like this is going to just really put up a lot of new benchmarks and a lot of new firsts for our company and also for the industry,” Slikkers said.

In the works for 1 ½ years, the EX 60 is still under development, but the prototype is slated to be complete by mid-August and available to customers later this year .

For more than 60 years, the Slikkers family has been making boats in Holland.

Thomas Slikkers said product, place and people are critical to his company’s philosophy that focuses on luxury creating a comfortable, quiet experience for customers.

“I think this building and what we do inside of it is second to none in the world. I think our product is second to none in the world,” Slikkers said. “But I think we’re also blessed in the sense that we have some awesome people here and I think the combination of those three things make us unstoppable.”

Historically, League City was the site of a Karankawa Indian village. The Karankawa were native to coastal Texas and were skilled bow and arrow hunters and fishers. By the mid-1800s, their numbers were decimated from war and disease, with very few surviving. In 1873, the town’s first resident, George W Butler, relocated from Louisiana settling at the conjunction of Clear Creek and Chigger Bayou. The first local business was a brickyard. The settlement was known as Butlers Ranch or Clear Creek until 20 years later when the land was acquired by J.C. League from the owner who relinquished his property rights upon entering the priesthood. The town was laid out around the railroads that had built through the area in 1854. Early settlers raised Texas Longhorn cattle, but then switched to farming after 1890 to take advantage of land lots sold to farmers by the Clear Creek Development. Some of the produce raised at that time were Satsuma oranges, cotton, corn, potatoes, sugarcane, cucumbers, strawberries, and truck crops (early 20th century), then later they tried grapefruit, figs, and dates.

By 1914, at least half a dozen railroad lines ran through the town. After WWII, the town became a center for railroad shops and a Humble Oil tank farm (just north of League City in Webster, across Clear Creek). Humble Oil and Refinery was one of the first major oil producers in Texas when in 1905, oil was discovered in Humble, a town northwest of Houston, after the Spindletop well struck black gold in 1901 and started the Texas oil rush. Humble Oil became affiliated with Standard Oil of New Jersey and eventually consolidated under the Exxon brand in 1972 and finally, ExxonMobil in 1999. In 1990 League City had 189 businesses and a population of 18,996 that more than doubled in one decade to 45,444 in 2000. Land was incorporated as far west as the city limits of Friendswood, near the junction of Rt 6 and Rt 35 to accommodate growth. And by 2019 population had more than doubled again to over 106,000.

The League City Historic District features 100+ year old live oak trees planted by JC League and other early settlers, along with beautiful 19th century homes that line East Main Street’s 500-900 block area. The Shoppes at Founders Square are 5 locally owned boutiques and a Victorian era tearoom in historic 100-year-old houses. Visitors can shop for unique gift items, collectibles, antiques, gourmet treats and coffees, jewelry, clothes, and enjoy fine dining in the area’s restaurants. The Historic District features a wine bar, cafes, cigar shop and more. The West Bay Common School Museum is an example of the one room schoolhouse built in 1898 on land donated by JC League. The original schoolhouse was destroyed in the 1900 hurricane. The Barn Museum once housed the first fire station. The historic homes featuring Victorian architecture, are privately owned, and can only be viewed from the sidewalk or street. Tour provides historical narrative.

League Park was gifted to the city by JC League along with a 2-story gazebo—a band performed above while ice-cream and other refreshments were vended on the ground level below. The original gazebo was destroyed by the 1900 hurricane and by fire a few years later, when rebuilt. A new gazebo in Victorian style was built in 1976 for America’s bicentennial. League Park has been the site of community events like concerts, festivals, and parties for over 100 years.

Helen’s Garden at 701 E Main in the Historic District, was established in 1994 to commemorate philanthropist Helen Hall (1907-1981). This beautiful garden with water feature was created by her husband and the League City Garden Club. It is one of the most photographed spots in League City. The Butler Longhorn Museum, located in Heritage Park, interprets League City’s role in Texas history, especially in preserving the Texas Longhorn cattle breed that was saved from extinction by League City’s founders. The museum also features a historic firearms collection and artifacts of the city’s founders, a vintage movie theater, and more.

Located in League Park, the Railroad Section House, built between 1887-1897, is an excellent example of Folk Victorian architecture with the notable detail of a sunburst design in its gables. Original home of the Railroad Superintendent of the Galveston, Houston, and Henderson (GH&H) Railroad company, it is currently occupied by League City Park District office. The 1896 League City Railroad Depot and the 1902 Dickenson Railroad Depot can be viewed at the Dickenson Railroad Museum.

The Dr Ned and Fay Dudney Clear Creek Nature Center on the south shore of Clear Creek is a 148-acre site of undeveloped wetland and coastal prairies with public walking trails for observing native wildlife and migrating bird habitat. The Center features picnic areas, covered pavilions, and bird blinds along the 1.3-mile trail. Walter Hall Park with frontage on Clear Creek features a pier and boat ramp, along with soccer fields, tennis courts, baseball field, playground, indoor banquet facility, sand volleyball, and much more. League City Boat Ramp & park features a boat launch and picnic areas.

Just south of League City is the Bayou Wildlife Zoo in Alvin, TX founded and developed by Clint and Barbara Wolston, who have owned the 80-acre open range zoo for 35 years, caring for 500 animals with the help of staff. Zebras, ostriches, giraffes, camels, alligators, kangaroos, ring-tailed lemurs, and a white rhino are a few of the exotic animals on display. The zoo features 86 different species of animals and birds in the park, a covered picnic area for 400 people, souvenir shop, restrooms, tram, 2 miles of trails, 15 lakes and ponds, and 3,500 ft frontage on Dickenson Bayou. The owners, who are retiring, have sold the zoo to new owners who are area residents and have pledged to keep the zoo open and build on the Wolston’s legacy.

The South Shore Harbour Marina that opened in 1983 lies in a natural hurricane hole on the south shore of Clear Lake in League City and features a landmark black and white striped lighthouse. This well-designed, protected (sheltered on all sides) marina is the largest on Clear Lake and one of the most renowned on the Gulf Coast, with 855 slips on floating docks and finger piers. Slips range in size from 30 ft to 60 ft to accommodate vessels under 30 ft to over 50 ft, with a maximum LOA of 120 ft.

Dock depth is 10 ft; approach is less—boats with drafts over 4 ft are cautioned to stay in channel. Services include 30 & 50amp metered electric, water, WiFi, restrooms/showers, coin laundry, ice, security, Ships Store, travel lift, and pet friendly. Fuel dock with ValvTect gas & diesel fuels. Free pump-outs for marina members. Amenities include onsite resort hotel with 185 ft oasis pool and swim-up bar, fitness center, marina events/parties, water sport rentals, and dining and lounge is just a short walk from marina. Restaurants, grocery stores, and shops are nearby. Slips are offered for monthly rental—contact marina.

Marina Del Sol has wet slips on floating concrete docks for power or sailboats up to 55 ft, 34 ft beam (multi-hulls), and 4.5 ft maximum draft, and dry storage for runabouts or boats up to 30 ft. Services include 30 & 50amp electrical (metered), restrooms/showers, laundry facility, pump-out, ice, and dock cart. Amenities include swimming pool, Captains Lounge, BBQ and picnic areas. Transient slips are available for a daily fee of $2/ft. Monthly rate is available, check website. Marina Del Sol is located on Clear Lake with easy access to Galveston Bay.

Wharf Marina at Clear Lake are dockominiums surrounded by The Wharf Townhomes located on the west end of Clear Lake. Access to Clear Lake, Galveston Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico is easy from the marina. The marina has 57 liveaboard and 148 non-liveaboard slips with metered electric, restrooms, showers, coin laundry, and pool. Holding tank pump-out station is open to all slip owners. Slips can be purchased and individually owned as real property. Maintenance fee for all common areas includes city water. Slips can be leased from owners—check website for current availability.

New York City’s largest public EV charging station is headed to JFK

New York City just announced it will build its largest publicly accessible EV charging station next to JFK Airport.

Wildflower , a New York City-based developer of urban infrastructure for sustainability, was chosen by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to build the city’s largest publicly accessible EV charging station.

The EV charging station by JFK will sit on a 2.3-acre land parcel between Nassau Expressway and Rockaway Boulevard. It will initially feature 65 EV chargers, including 12 DC fast charging stations, and will be available 24/7. It’s designed to easily accommodate expansion as EV demand rises, including charging infrastructure for a growing number of electric trucks that service the airport’s nearby cargo and shipping centers. 

Construction is expected to be completed in 2025, and the EV charging station is initially expected to charge 1,000 vehicles annually. Electrical conduits will be installed throughout the site to allow additional charging stations to be added.

The new charging station will help relieve the parking pressures in the surrounding neighborhood and around JFK North and make southeastern Jamaica and surrounding areas in Queens a charging hub.

1,000 annually sounds wrong. With 65 chargers I assume this is per day. Or does it mean 1,000 vehicles will use the chargers ongoingly throughout the year?

New York City Department of Transportation commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said , “This development will deliver a significant number of EV chargers to help power our electric vehicle future and advance the [Mayor Eric] Adams administration’s investments to build over 20 EV charging stations citywide.”
