Inside the Arctic P — Business Tycoon James Packer’s Million Dollar Superyacht

Titled one of the largest superyachts in the world, the Arctic P, owned by billionaire James Packer, is currently making headlines after he offered it to his fiancée Mariah Carey. The business tycoon, who vacationed in Europe all through summer with Mariah, has often been spotted travelling across the globe on this yacht. 

From having a private helipad to well-decorated interiors, this yacht is nothing less than a luxurious floating mansion. Read on to know more about this celebrity-owned luxe vessel.

Built by German company Schichau Seebeckwerft back in 1970, the Arctic P can cover a maximum distance of 18,000 nautical miles at 20 knots speed. The vessel measures 287 feet and can comfortably accommodate 12 guests, a total of 25 people including crew members. Rumoured to be Packer’s most prized possession, the superyacht was inherited by the business tycoon from his father Kerry Packer.

Refitted in 2014, the superyacht boasts of a new super-steel structure which makes the yacht strong enough to dribble through ice floes in the southern ocean. With white exteriors and an electric blue hull, the superyacht looks visually stunning, and stands out amidst the other white-dyed vessels.

The vessel features a stunning master suite with six separate accommodations spread over two levels on the deck. Designed by renowned interior decorator duo C. Kidston and A. Sassoon, the handcrafted furniture on the superyacht is furbished in rich upholstery. The wooden floors are adorned with fine rugs, while the floor-to-ceiling glass doors offer guests an unparalleled view of the ocean.

While many superyachts own motor boats and sea bikes, the Arctic P is well-equipped to hold a private helicopter as it has a helipad on its deck. 

Apart from stunning suites and the private helipad, the yacht also features an observation tower, amphitheatre, Jacuzzi and swimming pool. In fact, Packer is known to have hosted many celebrity parties on this yacht.

Talking of celebrities, this yacht has also hosted personalities like Leonardo DiCaprio, Miranda Kerr, Kelly Rohrbach, Alan Jones and more.

IJE Yacht – Sophisticated $200M Superyacht

IJE yacht was built by the well-known Italian ship and boat building company Benetti and delivered in 2019.

With her 108 metres (354 ft) length, she currently ranks 34th on the list of largest yachts in the world. She is also the longest yacht ever built by Benetti.

Benetti not only built the IJE yacht, but they also worked on designing the yacht interior. The layout is reminiscent of a cozy beach house with luxurious elements that take the design to the next level.

There is a private owner’s deck onboard IJE with access to a separate side deck.

Twenty guests can stay on board IJE yacht in ten luxurious and spacious suites. The yacht has a dedicated movie theatre, nightclub, and an elevator between the four decks.

The gym is not only equipped with the latest equipment, but it is also a real eye-catcher and is located on the lower deck of the IJE yacht.

One side wall folds down completely to double the size of the gym, and a ladder into the water invites you to cool off after your workout.

A well-trained crew of up to 28 people takes care of everything in and around the vessel.

Specifications

Two MTU twin engines power IJE with 2,880 kW each. She achieves top speeds of 21 knots and can reach distances of over 6,500 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 16 knots.

The 108-meter yacht is also equipped with an additional system from Schottel, which allows low-noise and low-vibration auxiliary propulsion that guarantees better maneuverability.

IJE has a fuel tank of up to 365,000 liters and a freshwater tank of 85,000 liters, which is an advantage for longer distances.

The exterior of IJE was designed by world-renowned ship designer RWD, whose goal is to create each yacht with “exceptional beauty and elegance.”

There is space for two tenders up to 12 meters long that can be launched by crane on the foredeck.

A fireplace was installed as a focal point on the bridge deck, and on the main deck, a pool surrounded by spacious open-air dining with an additional lounge and bar welcomes guests. A side garage opens up and becomes a berth for four jet skis.

The IJE yacht also carries water toys such as seabobs, water skis, kayaks, and snorkeling equipment. The designated observation deck offers stunning views of the surrounding ocean and landscape.

IJE was transferred from Benetti to the owner for a price of approximately US $200 million in 2019. The superyacht is currently listed for sale at a price of US $175 million.

Australian billionaire James Packer is putting the finishing touches on his sprawling $50 million Mexican mansion after three years of construction.

The massive single-storey estate occupies one of the largest beachfront blocks in Cabo San Lucas, located on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula.

And it appears not all the locals are impressed by the mansion, with one neighbour telling the Daily Mail it looked “more like a maximum-security prison” than a billionaire’s home.

The home is tucked behind a towering wall facing the street. Seven separate buildings make up the residence and features a large open air courtyard, an infinity pool and manicured lawns.

But if aren’t in the market for a Mexican prison-like mansion, Packer has an even more expensive residence for sale that will blow the international escape out of the water.

You won’t find many gyms with a better view.

Packer is still searching for a buyer of his epic $283 million Italian-built super yacht IJE.

Featuring a nightclub, 11 cabins, swimming pool and a theatre, the floating palace is nearly three times the cost of Australia’s most expensive home — Fairwater in Point Piper.

Packer’s IJE super yacht was first listed last month and comes only two years after the casino mogul purchased the ship in 2019 for $200 million. It is named after his three children, Indigo, Jackson and Emmanuelle.

The listing – on the Burgess yacht advertising site — comes after he gave video evidence to the NSW independent Liquor and Gaming inquiry into money laundering in his casinos earlier this year.

The inquiry found Crown Resorts was not fit to operate casinos in NSW and recommended it would need to make some drastic changes before its casino at Barangaroo could open.

Packer, who owns 37 per cent of Crown, later agreed to play no role in how Crown is run for the next three-and-a-half years after the inquiry found his influence was a reason it was unfit to open the new casino.

IJE has accommodation for 22 guests in 11 cabins. The 108m “giga-yacht” comes with a mind-boggling array of features, including a swimming pool, gym and cinema and even your very own barber’s salon.

The next owner can also enjoy two 12m tenders, a private owner’s deck, a swimming pool, lounge, bar and firepit.

Packer is described as “a very experienced owner”.

Australian billionaire James Packer has listed his Italian-built superyacht for sale for a whopping $283 million.

The casino mogul bought the yacht in 2019, which boasts a cinema, nightclub, swimming pool and barber’s salon, and was originally purchased for around $200 million.

The yacht which is named IJE, believed to be after his three children Indigo, Jackson and Emmanuelle, has been listed on the site of international superyacht broker Burgess Yachts.

It states that it was “built as the ultimate world-cruising family yacht for a very experienced owner” and can fit 22 guests in 11 cabins, which includes a private owner’s deck.

Inside there’s a relaxed beach house-style interior by Benetti with IJE the longest yacht ever created by the company, while its also the flagship of their custom fleet.

The 108m yacht is described as having a “timeless sculptural exterior” and includes an elevator and three functioning levels including a sun lounge bridge deck with a firepit and open air dining with a lounge and bar on the main deck.

There’s also a great array of toys and watercraft that come with the yacht too, such as two 12m tenders, boats attached to the yacht.

The broker’s website described the 54-year-old’s yacht as offering “true world cruising credentials” with its Rolls Royce dynamic positioning system

His purchase of IJE followed after he gifted his 288-foot Artic P yacht to his sister Gretel in 2017, while he previously owned the 170-foot Amels Seahorse that was sold in 2015.

Mr Packer’s current net worth is estimated to be around $US3 billion ($A4 billion), according to Forbes.

The singer and her family traveled over the fourth of july to the southern italian isle of capri and shared a slew of pics.

Mariah Carey  and fiancé James Packer  look very much in love and sure know how to vacation in style.

The 46-year-old pop star, the 48-year-old Australian billionaire and her 5-year-old twins  Moroccan and  Monroe  spent the Fourth of July weekend on and near the island of Capri in southern Italy and recently visited the island of Ponza.

During their vacation, the group spent time basking in the sun on Packer's 280-foot mega luxury yacht, the Arctic P. They also dined on the shore and celebrated the holiday with music producer David Geffen , who arrived on his own yacht, The Rising Sun. 

Carey posted a slew of photos  of her and her family's Italian vacation on her Instagram page.

On Thursday, she and Packer were spotted strolling on the cobblestone streets of Capri, accompanied by an entourage.

"I was hoping to see her on the island, as the word spread that she was there, and I did," an onlooker told E! News exclusively. "It was so exciting, and they looked so happy!"

The two enjoyed an Italian feast at the Aurora restaurant, a favorite of the singer, along with about eight other people. Packer sat at the end of the table with Carey by his right side. The couple "looked very happy" and the singer "was glowing," E! News has learned.

Carey wore a black lace slip dress, paired with a diamond necklace, and matching hoop earrings. Packer wore a black t-shirt and a grey sports jacket.

The two dined on pizza all'acqua, the house specialty, which is a wafer-thin pizza with chilli peppers and local mozzarella cheese, as well as clam and zucchini fettuccini and a fish dish—grilled pezzogna, caught hours earlier. The restaurant owner also gifted the couple with a cake bearing the words "we love you."

After they finished their dinner, Carey and Packer exited the restaurant and she posed for selfies with fans waiting outside and signed autographs.

On Friday, Carey, Packer and the twins sailed north west to the Italian island of Ponza. Monroe enjoyed strawberry gelato on board his yacht.

The Fourth of July is a bittersweet holiday for the singer; Her father,  Alfred , died that day in 2002 at age 72.

"I know July 4 is a very painful time for her, due to her dad's death that day, but she looked as if she was in a very happy, serene place, with the man of her life by her side," the onlooker old E! News.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

The broken billionaire: Inside James Packer’s tough mental health battle

Summer on the French Riviera and the serious money has once again arrived in Europe’s playground.

James Packer is here, as he is most years, aboard Mischief, the 52-metre super yacht he is renting this summer from Sydney skip bin king Ian Malouf for a cool $400,000 a week.

As he awaits delivery of his own new $200 million ‘gigayacht’ – slated for August 1 – there is a sense that the tide may be finally turning for the troubled billionaire.

“He’s got a smile on his face more often than he has had for a long, long time,” says a close friend of Packer, who is recovering from his third breakdown in 15 years.

“These last few weeks have definitely been a turning point – there is no doubt about it.”

After a tumultuous few years, Packer is slowly getting his personal and professional life in order. Last month he sold a 20 per cent stake in Crown Resorts for $1.8 billion.

In December, he got a Cavoodle named Waffle with his long-term girlfriend, the socialite Kylie Lim.

And – most significantly – he appears to have made peace with his older sister, Gretel.

The pair has been embroiled in a bitter battle over the family fortune, which ended with James reluctantly handing over 100 per cent control of Ellerston, their famed polo estate in the NSW Hunter Valley; the family’s long-time seaside retreat at fashionable Palm Beach; and the Arctic P super yacht, among other assets.

But sources close to Packer confirmed that the siblings recently lunched together at Packer’s $80 million Los Angeles mansion, the sprawling former home of Hollywood actor Danny DeVito.

“That will go a long way towards improving his mental state,” says a Packer confidante.

“Their fight really knocked him about. It was a massive emotional strain on him.”

Packer, who has a history of fractious and fractured friendships, has also been reaching out to old friends, including his fellow media scion and one-time business partner Lachlan Murdoch. The pair caught up recently in Los Angeles, the city they now both call home.

THE COLLAPSE

It all seems a far cry from two years ago, when an isolated Packer was downing a bottle of vodka a day and fretting about going broke in the wake of his split from fiancée Mariah Carey.

The breakdown followed a turbulent four years, spanning the collapse of his second marriage to Erica Packer, mother of his three young children; an ill-fated foray into the work-hard, play-hard ways of Hollywood (which Packer himself has described as “wild, really wild”); the failure of his ambitious US casino push; the detention of 17 employees of Crown Resorts in China; a rumoured relationship with supermodel Miranda Kerr; a corruption investigation into his friend, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; the acrimonious fight with Gretel; and the loss of many longstanding friends, including a much publicised punch-up with former best mate David Gyngell.

“With Hollywood, Mariah, Israel, China, all of those things, I was like Icarus,” Packer told journalist Damon Kitney, somewhat euphemistically, for his authorised biography, The Price of Fortune: The Untold Story of Being James Packer .

“I flew too close to the sun.”

Unlike Icarus, Packer’s hubris did not kill him – yet his crash back to earth was severe enough for friends to describe his current mental crisis as the most serious yet.

As recently as March, when footage emerged of Packer lumbering awkwardly into Melbourne’s Crown Casino, head bent, obese and looking far older than his 51 years, friends were questioning his ability to bounce back.

“That video, every time you see him, you just cringe,” former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett tells The Weekly. “I am terribly saddened by where he is at now.”

Packer’s fleeting trip to Melbourne, then Perth, marked his first visit “home” in the year since he’d shocked the world by admitting what friends had long suspected: he is suffering from a debilitating mental illness.

For almost two years, he has lived the life of a virtual – and heavily medicated – recluse at his homes in Aspen, Los Angeles and Argentina.

Having been prescribed different drugs by doctors in Israel, Argentina and then Boston, he has admitted he struggled to function at times.

A friend who met up with him recently was struck by the change.

“He was very flat. There was no spark in his eyes. He was just a changed human being,” he says.

“If you had said to me, ‘James is going to be on medication and be stable,’ I would have said, ‘Great’. But I walked away and thought, ‘F**k, that’s a huge price to pay.’ … I was pretty depressed by the whole thing.”

SEEKING STABILITY

Others, however, insist the drugs have achieved their primary goal.

“He is stable for the first time in years,” says a friend, who has known Packer since he was a boy.

“He’s a different person for sure. His speech is slowed, but he is not so cantankerous and volatile, and he is much more considered.”

In times of trouble past, Packer has sought spiritual solutions to his problems.

After his first breakdown, in 2002, it was speculated that he turned to Scientology on the recommendation of the actor Tom Cruise, who Packer credited with “putting me back together”.

But since distancing himself from the organisation, Packer and Cruise no longer speak.

“It’s his choice that we aren’t friends anymore,” Packer told Kitney.

This time around, Packer has turned to the US-based Thom Knoles, a maharishi (or master teacher) of meditation, a mental technique for relaxation developed 5000 years

ago in India, to supplement his prescription medication regime.

Packer has even travelled to the foothills of the Himalayas with Knoles, who for 29 years had a meditation practice in the eastern Sydney suburb of Woollahra.

“Some say he’s too far gone – it looks as if he’s given up,” says Kennett, adding he didn’t catch up with Packer on his most recent trip to Australia.

“It will require a lot of will and I don’t know whether he’s got that right now. But can he come back? Of course he can. He’s proved he can in the past.”

A usually press-shy Packer told The Australian Financial Review earlier this month: “I am terribly overweight and I have got to do something about that next. I have done it before and hopefully can begin to do it again. I am feeling better.”

It has often been speculated that Packer suffers from bipolar disorder, which causes extreme mood shifts ranging from mania to depression.

It is the same mental illness that Mariah Carey admitted to having in April last year.

Friends and family speak of Packer’s extreme emotional highs and lows.

Over the years, journalists have delighted in his erratic behaviour, whether it be angrily putting former Fairfax chairman Ron Walker in a kind of headlock as they awaited the Queen, challenging former Nine Network boss David Leckie to take it outside at a posh function at the Sydney Opera House or sending worrying emails on Australia’s foreign policy to then Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, prompting the PM to call and check that Packer was alright.

Many have been at the end of furious email tirades from Packer, which goes some way towards explaining why he no longer speaks to many old chums from the elite Cranbrook School.

“I think what happened is he just drove them away with his abuse,” says a person who knows the group, which includes Gyngell, Matthew Csidei, Chris Hancock and his wife, the actress Dee Smart.

“It wasn’t like they abandoned him or he had a new group of friends. He actively made it difficult so they kind of just moved on.”

Packer has never publicly put a label on his condition, admitting only to Kitney: “I have wrestled with mental health issues at times in my life – depression and anxiety – especially in times of extreme stress. I have big mood swings.”

The tragedy is that his condition has never, until now, been properly treated.

“He was entirely untreated at a young age,” says a friend. “Now he’s getting medical care for it.”

It’s not the first time that people have been caught off guard by erratic Packer behaviour.

James’s uncle, Clyde, Kerry’s older brother, who was first in line to assume the Packer crown, abruptly quit the business after a row with his father, and instead donned a caftan and moved to California.

“I was sick of lugging this Packer persona around with me,” he later explained.

“You become enmeshed in the tycoon syndrome. It’s self-destructive. You lose yourself. Your personality becomes smaller and smaller. I think it’s a giant cover-up for inferiority.”

A VERY DIFFERENT FATHER

As you read this, Packer will no doubt still be kicking back on Mischief, bought second-hand for $40 million in 2015 by Dial A Dump founder Ian Malouf (dubbed Australia’s richest garbo).

The luxury yacht features marble floors, leather walls, on-deck clay pigeon shooting and a climbing wall that lowers into the water.

Sources say Packer is likely to be joined, at various points this summer, by fellow billionaire Kerry Stokes; his mother Ros; current girlfriend Kylie; and other members of the Packer posse, which includes his schoolmate Ben Tilley; his trainer Damien “Chappy” Chapman; Guy Jalland, who heads up Packer’s private company; the Argentine polo player Martin Pepa; and The Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.

But the VIP visitors this summer will no doubt be his children, Indigo, Jackson and Emmanuelle, who are expected to join him at least twice.

“He lives and breathes his children. He speaks to them every day,” says a friend.

In contrast to the parenting style of his own father, who was tough and brutal on his only son, Packer is said to be a “very affectionate, gentle” father.

For now, Packer finds himself, in the words of one friend, “in a bit of a holding pattern”.

He is still awaiting delivery of his new 107 metre gigayacht – the largest private vessel of its type, made by Italian shipbuilder Benetti – which will be named IJE after his children’s initials.

And his next – and indeed only – big project is the $2.2 billion Barangaroo casino development in Sydney, which is due to open next year.

It has been described both as Packer’s baby and his legacy, and is seen as a make-or-break development for Crown Resorts.

The rest of his commitments – his gaming business in Macau, his Hollywood movie production company RatPac and his board seat on Crown Resorts – have all been jettisoned.

“I’m tired of being on this roller-coaster. I don’t want to do it anymore,” Packer explained to Kitney. “I’m really ready to put my hands up for a few years. I really am.”

Given all the emotional and financial woes of the past five years, one has to wonder whether Packer would have been happier if he had chosen this path all along.

Instead of trying to better his father’s achievements by building a global empire, he could have remained permanently as ‘Jamie’, the polo-playing playboy, living off the interest of his father’s billions.

In 1994, aged 27, Packer told journalist Peter FitzSimons that such an option would have destroyed him – first through hedonism, then through guilt.

He suggested he would “self-destruct” through “gambling, fast cars, alcohol, drugs, whatever it happens to be”.

“If I sat back and decided to sell the product of my father and my grandfather’s work, like a leech, you know I wouldn’t be able to look at myself in the mirror,” he said.

Many businesspeople say Packer has an extraordinary mind, is brilliant with numbers and astute at picking market trends.

He was quick to understand the potential of both the internet and China’s rising middle class.

But the tragedy is that his mental illness frequently impairs his judgement.

“James has a decision-making process that is reflective of his mood at the time,” one told Kitney.

“Excessive optimism means overpaying and excessive pessimism means selling at the wrong time. Both are bad decisions.”

The decision to sell his Macau gaming interests is the one that plagues Packer’s mind. “Macau is so heartbreaking because I lost my reputation, and serious people treat me differently,” he told Kitney.

“This time I’ve lost my reputation globally. I’m not sure how easy it is to get it back a fourth time. I’m really not sure.”

Yet Packer’s friends worry less about his comeback as a tycoon, more about his comeback as a happy, stable human being.

Close friends such as 2GB radio host Alan Jones and businessman Lloyd Williams have urged Packer to come home to his real friends and family.

Kennett agrees that Packer has isolated himself from the people he can trust.

“He has put around himself people who he pays a fortune to,” he tells The Weekly . “They aren’t the people he needs.”

But Packer has a complicated, love-hate relationship with Sydney, admitting that he is “scared” of the emerald city and fears he is not tough enough to cope with the scrutiny he endures here.

It is not known whether he will ever return to the city of his birth on a permanent basis, despite having purchased a $60 million penthouse at the top of the Barangaroo casino tower.

“You can understand why he would feel like that,” says a friend.

“It’s hard enough when he is in a small town in Italy and even in Aspen. You see people whispering, ‘That’s James Packer’. In Sydney, he cannot even go out for a cup of coffee without gossip columnists feasting with delight on his misery. He becomes a prisoner in his own enormous house.

“LA is pretty good, that’s why his kids live there. There they are just regular rich kids at the school they are at. They are actually less famous than a lot of their classmates.”

As he floats on the azure waters of the Mediterranean, Packer has a three-month reprieve from any big decisions – business and personal.

It’s a fair bet he’ll spend the summer working on his health and continuing to try to rekindle relationships with the movers and shakers who flock to the south of France each year. Then again he could hide himself away, on board Mischief, compulsively surfing television channels.

That’s the thing with Packer. He’s so hard to predict.

Sunrise Yachts, a luxury yacht building company which is based in Turkey, has been made a main sponsor of next year’s 2011 Moscow International Boat Show (MIBS). The four-day Russian yacht show event is currently scheduled to run from April 14-17 at the Moscow’s Crocus exhibition centre.

MIBS is organised by the ITE Group and it is one of Russia’s leading boat shows and is an internationally recognised superyacht event. The show covering everything from small parts and accessories to large superyacht with over 9,000 people and 178 exhibitors attended the last year show.

The Paolo Scanu-designed Sunrise 45 yacht is an ocean-going cruising yacht that was released in 2009 to much acclaim at this was the group’s first-ever model.

Sunrise Yachts was founded in 2007 by the German entrepreneur Herbert P Baum along with the French-British yacht builder Guillaume Roché. The luxury yacht group is based in Antalya, Turkey and utilises a 10,000sq m shipyard facility. Sunrise has two sheds measuring 100m (328ft) x 16m (53ft), as well as a 70m (230ft) x 16m (53ft) fully acclimatized paint shed that can accommodate new-build and refit projects up to 65m (213ft) in length and 1,200 tonnes displacement.

Along each side of the yacht-building facility, space is available for long-term sub-contractors with the latest equipment and logistics capabilities, along with air-conditioned storage, ventilation and extraction plants. The shipyard is organized as an “assembler,” based loosely on the car industry’s model, with a small, yet powerful project management team charged with running all the in-house long-term sub-contractors.

Like iron developing rust, copper will naturally tarnish  over time with exposure to humidity and other elements found in the air. Copper's blue-green tarnish, known as patina, can be either useful or annoying, depending on its intended use.

The patina actually serves as a protective layer for the copper beneath, and can be useful in outdoor applications such as roofing or pipes.  However, when it comes to mugs or cups, we want the copper to shine as warmly as possible, so it is essential to know about preventative care and maintenance.

How Do You Clean Copper Mugs?

Cleaning copper mugs is like cleaning most anything, except that it MUST be washed by hand. In other words, never put them in the dishwasher, ever. Take 30 seconds to gently wash them by hand with a soft sponge, soap and warm water.

For most people at home, this shouldn't be a problem. But some high-volume bars or restaurants might not be able to dedicate the time needed for proper care. This is one reason a business may prefer a tin-lined  or lacquered copper cup that may need less polishing, although they too should still be washed by hand.

Residual water in the slightest amount can lead to tarnishing, so experts highly recommend you dry your copper mug twice, with two different soft towels or cloths until all moisture is removed.  This extra step only takes a few moments, and will go a long way towards the durability and cleanliness of your copper mule mugs.

5 Easy and Natural Ways to Remove Copper Tarnish

Owning a copper mug comes with the added responsibility of some occasional, simple maintenance. When your favorite mug starts to turn green, here are some easy solutions to restore its natural shine!

Lemon or Limes and Salt

This simple method is quick and easy, and ideal for bars or restaurants that may have an abundance of lemons on hand. Simply pour some table or sea salt onto a dish, and cut a fresh lemon or lime into 1/4th slices. Dip the fruit slice into the salt, and scrub the copper mug with slow, methodical circles inside and out. The change should be almost instantaneous, and when the tarnish has been removed, wash under warm or cool water, and dry thoroughly.

Vinegar and Salt

Mix one cup of vinegar, one tablespoon of salt, and five cups of water. Pour the solution into a saucepan, place your mug into the saucepan, and bring it to a boil. After a few minutes, the tarnish will have disappeared, and you can remove the mug with tongs, rinse it in cold water, and dry thoroughly with two soft dish towels.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Create a paste with three parts baking soda, and one part vinegar. Use a sponge to apply it to the mug with small circular motions and let it sit for about 10 minutes in order for the magic to happen. After that, simply rinse and dry until all moisture has been removed.

Harness the power of tomatoes to clean your tarnished copper mug! Apply the ketchup using a soft sponge or toothbrush, always rubbing in small circles. Then let it stand for 30 minutes. Remove the ketchup in the same way you applied it (a specially designated tarnish-toothbrush can be a highly effective tool for getting into those hard to reach places). Finally, rinse with water, and dry thoroughly with two soft towels.

Tamarind Paste

Tamarind is a tropical fruit, popular in Caribbean, African and Indian cuisine. It contains tartaric acid, which helps remove tarnish from brass and copper. If this is something you have access to, simply add water to create a paste, and rub it onto the copper with a soft sponge or cloth.  After a few minutes, rinse off the paste, and dry completely.

Metal Polish

Although the natural methods listed above are all equally effective, inexpensive and safe, another option is to use a tarnish remover or metal polish. Popular brands like Brasso are great for polishing many different kinds of metals, but the main ingredients may be less than desirable (rubbing alcohol, ammonia, mineral spirits and silica powder). Chances are you can easily find most of the ingredients for cleaning copper mugs in your pantry, and can avoid buying a product full of harsh chemicals.

Is It Safe To Drink From Copper Mugs?

Yes, it is safe to drink from copper mugs , despite click-bait headlines, myths and legislation that may suggest otherwise. True, when using 100% pure copper mugs it is possible that trace amounts of copper could be ingested. However, this can be mitigated by using stainless-steel plated copper mugs.

Copper is an essential part of human biology, and is necessary for regulating metabolic systems and vital organs. Copper deficiency can lead to arthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases and colon cancer.

Not only do our bodies need copper, we also have systems in place to naturally deal with any excess copper. Verified scientific studies have shown copper can do impressive things.

• Copper and Iron work together to form red blood cells.
• Copper helps maintain collagen, and along with other antioxidants, can reduce signs of aging.
• Copper helps absorb excess iron in the liver.
• Copper improves brain and nerve cell synaptic responses.
• Copper aids in digestion and helps with ulcers and inflammation.

Copper toxicity is quite rare and, according to the World Health Organization , "There is a greater risk of health effects from a deficiency of copper intake than excessive copper intake."

The FDA guidelines do not recommend using copper for any food or beverage purposes, solely because of the extra care needed to maintain it, and applies exclusively to commercial operations, with varying local and state regulations.

This is meant to protect consumers from improperly cleaned or exposed copper mugs and cookware in bars and restaurants, and does not apply to home use. The FDA suggests the public learn about proper care and maintenance before using copper mugs, but scientists have debunked the claim that a Moscow Mule can give you copper poisoning.

When using 100% pure copper mugs and a liquid with a pH below 6.0 (like lime juice), and that liquid remains in the mug for an extended period of time, there is a chance you could consume amounts of copper. This is the reason why it is generally a good idea to use copper mugs lined with stainless-steel .

No, never! All copper cookware, utensils or mugs should be washed by hand, no exceptions. Dishwashers typically use harsh detergent, powerful water sprays and high heat that can seriously harm your copper mug both inside and out.

Dishwashers can lead to dents, tarnishing, and flaking or cracking. So take 30 seconds to do right by your copper mugs, and wash and dry them by hand!

Lines Versus Unlined Copper Mugs

When purchasing a copper mug, there are three basic options - 100% copper, tin-lined, and copper plated.

Copper is a great thermal conductor, and will keep your drink colder for longer (or hotter for longer, depending on the drinks). This is a big part of what makes the Moscow Mule an attractive summer beverage, and why copper mugs are great for cocktails in general.

Lined copper mugs  (usually with zinc, stainless-steel  or tin) can be a great choice. The double lining improves their durability, and can give them a great look. Unlike pure copper, lined copper mugs also offer additional health benefits by avoiding reactions between acids in your drink and pure copper.

Both lined and unlined copper mugs must be washed by hand and both will develop a patina over time. Lined mugs might take slightly less time to polish, because you only need worry about the outside. However, now that you know how to clean tarnished copper mugs, it's nothing you can't handle.

Copper mugs are stylish and good for your health. They keep your cold drinks chilled, and your hot drinks steaming.
