Best Production Cruiser Under $200,000: Hunter 356

  • By Tim Murphy
  • Updated: December 17, 2001

$200 000 sailboat

C01BOTY08.jpg

In the pages of Cruising World, we’ve often lobbied boatbuilders for more affordable, seaworthy cruising boats of modest size that, in the spirit of the 1960 Pearson Triton, open the possibilities of cruising to more sailors. Seven of the boats we sailed come closest to answering that request. These are series-built sloops of traditional cruising design marked by moderate displacement-to-length and sail area-to-displacement ratios as well as simple rigs and sail plans. Of these seven boats, three are priced below the $200K mark.

The Etap 34s is a sprightly sloop from Belgium that’s built with enough foam between its hull skins to keep floating–and sailing–even after it’s fully flooded (though we didn’t get the chance to test it that way). The Beneteau 393 is a spacious, two- or three-cabin sloop modeled on last year’s successful 473.

But the boat that stood out was the aft-cockpit Hunter 356, a boat Ralph called “a paradigm shift for Hunter.” He liked the influence he saw from Glenn Henderson, a yacht designer known for his performance boats; for a little over a year, he’s been Hunter’s in-house designer. “Henderson’s input has really come through. This girl, driven hard for a shoal-draft boat, balanced nicely and drove fairly easily.”

Alvah found the cockpit layout clean. “I liked that big stainless-steel arch with the main traveler on top of it. It was a good handhold and a good location for cruisers to add wind generators, solar panels, or antenna, and the stainless-steel work was good.”

As on all the boats, including those that took prizes, there were a few items the judges would have preferred to see different. “I was concerned about those large lockers on the sugar scoop that drain into the bilge,” said Alvah. “They’re well gasketed, but I think the first thing anyone would need to do is get bigger hinges and better latches and make absolutely sure they’re not opening that kind of area that low.” It’s a trait that would be more serious if the 356 were intended as an all-oceans passagemaker, but Hunter calls it a coastal cruiser. The European Community rates it “Category B,” with usage limited to seas of four meters (about 13 feet) and winds of Force 8 (40 knots).

Compared with Hunters past, many interior features on the 356 were upgraded: Corian countertops, solid teak woodwork instead of veneers, radiused corners with fiddles. “The galley was squared away,” said Skip. “Nice freezer, good insulation. The Adler/Barbour compressor under the settee had good ventilation and very good access to work on it.”

Skip liked the electrical installation, too. “Hunter’s put antichafe around all the holes in all the bulkheads that have plumbing or wiring coming through, something most boats twice the price, three times the price, don’t do. Also, they left lots of slack in the wire leads at the electrical panel so you could pull them out and work on them.” The helm drew praise from Ralph: “I liked their steering concept: a drag-link system with a sealed rudder tube that ties the deck and hull together. No leaks, no need for a stuffing box.” Alvah liked that the wheel was small enough to walk around.

Carol summed up her impression of the 356: “It was a comfortable boat to sail. The design concept was stability with a shoal keel, and I think it met that.”

In today’s new-boat marketplace, this 35-footer, priced at $114,000, stands out as a remarkable value.

20 Bluewater Cruising Sailboats Under $100,000

January 5, 2021 by Travis Turgeon 2 Comments

thom milkovic p 0tDp9zAeI unsplash 1 - 20 Bluewater Cruising Sailboats Under $100,000

Choosing the right bluewater yacht for your needs requires a ton of research. With so many designs and features available, it can be overwhelming trying to narrow down your options. The process gets even more complicated when you begin to consider the personal opinions of other sailors.

So how do you know where to start? Every person’s definition of comfortability will vary when it comes to onboard living. What suits a family of four won’t necessarily suit a couple or a single-handed sailor. Your budget, style, and needs are all unique to you and your situation, so it’s essential to know just what to look for when buying a new or used vessel .

To start you off in the right direction, we put together a list of our top choices for bluewater cruising yachts under $100,000.

Allied Princess 36

Green Allied Princess 36 sailboat at a marina

Built as a long-keel ketch or cutter, the Allied Princess 36 was in production from 1972 to 1982. Around 140 vessels were manufactured in total, so you can occasionally find them on the used market.

While these cruisers’ design and construction are considered sufficient, the excessive use of fiberglass makes the design a bit bland. Although they may not have the most appealing design, these bluewater yachts certainly tick a lot of boxes.

With the full-keel measuring just four-foot six inches, it’s a design that holds steady on its course without pointing as high as a fin-keel design.

Overall, the Allied Princess 36 is a wonderful option for bluewater sailing.

Prices range between $30,000 and $60,000.

Cabo Rico 38

Cabo Rico sailboat with green sails

The Cabo Rico 38 is at the top of its class, constructed with a long-keel cutter rig design that gives it outstanding bluewater capabilities for its price point. The vessel was produced in two models – Pilothouse, and Trunk Cabin – although the Pilothouse design is less common.

Cabo Rico i s consistently successful with it s 38 models, and t hey remain one of the most prominent cruising boats on the water.

Internally, this boat has various features required for a bluewater cruiser: Large water and fuel tanks, a solid design with balsa wood cores for thermal and noise insulation, and an overall seaworthy design.

While this boat wasn’t m eant to win races, it is a fantastic choice for a crui sing vessel.

Prices range between $30,000 and $80,000.

Celestial 48

Bluewater Celestial 48 sailboat

The Celestial 48 is the largest boat on our list and is commonly sought after by the cruising fraternity. The problem is, these vessels are scarce on the used market.

The Celestial 48 is a ketch rig with a shoal-draft, fin-keel design, and a center-cockpit configuration that is comfortable and ideal for bluewater sailing. One of our favorite features is the six-foot, two-inch headroom in the cabin, along with high-capacity water and fuel tanks.

The Celestial 48 was built in China by the Xiamen boatyard, although it’s no longer in production.

If you can find one, the Celestial 48 will make an excellent bluewater cruiser.

Prices start near our $100,000 mark.

Bluewater Corbin 39 sailboat

The Corbin 39 is manufactured in two designs, aft or center cockpit. Designed and built in Canada by Robert Dufour and Marius Corbin, the 39 is now (sadly) out of production. This cruiser remains a favorite of many and is still commonly searched for on the used market.

One thing to note is that most of the boats were sold as unfinished kits, leaving owners to complete the interiors themselves. For this reason, the standard of interior design finish will vary, so it’s worth checking and comparing with other vessels carefully.

When found, the Corbin 39’s present a very reasonable price tag, but a full survey is essential.

Prices range between $40,000 and $60,000.

Docked Freedom 36 sailboat at sunset

The Freedom 36 is one of the smaller yachts on our list, but it has an exciting design that attracts cruisers. The wide beam and long waterline design allow for a much larger interior than most other boats of similar length. As a cruiser, space is a top priority, so this cruiser should be on your list of considerations.

A unique feature of this Freedom yacht is the stayless carbon fiber mast. It looks a little odd for most, with no forestay or backstay and a mast that flexes alarmingly in the wind. It’s a proven design, though, and gives clean lines just like an aircraft wing.

The Freedom 36 is certainly an exciting cruiser to keep an eye on.

Prices range between $40,000 and $80,000.

Gulfstar 44

Gulfstar 44 sailboat at sea

Known as a capable cruiser or live-aboard boat, the Gulfstar 44 is a spacious yacht that can take you around the world.

Designed with a fin-keel and skeg-rudder, the Gulfstar is comfortable and well built.

Internally, you’ll find a large galley, king-size aft cabin, and spacious fore cabin, with ample room in the saloon. Earlier Gulfstar vessels suffered from inconsistent build quality, but from around 1976 onwards, the company made huge improvements.

For a spacious bluewater sailboat with excellent heavy-weather handling characteristics, the Gulfstar 44 is a great choice.

Prices start around $60,000.

Hans Christian 38

1989 Hans Christian 38 T sailboat

If you’re considering cruising the world in a bluewater yacht, then the Hans Christian 38-T should be added to your shortlist of candidates.

With a full-length keel design and laden with solid teak, this boat weighs in at 12.5 tons, making it a heavy displacement vessel that you can rely on to take you through some of the harshest conditions.

Manufactured in Taiwan, these cruisers can be a chore to acquire. One of the most common downfalls of the Hans 38-T is electrical problems, so be sure to get the wiring checked out by a professional.

Outside of electrical issues, this boat is a proven winner in the cruising world.

Prices start around $70,000 but expect to pay well over $100,000 for the more admirable models.

Hinckley Bermuda 40

Group of people on a Hinckley Bermuda 40 with blue sails

The Hinckley Bermuda 40 was in production for over 30 years, from 1959 until 1991, but only 203 boats were manufactured in total. Many Bermuda 40s were used as racing vessels throughout their production, winning the Northern Ocean Racing Trophy in 1964.

The design also gained many admirers in the cruising world thanks to the long keel and centerboard, which allows the boat to maneuver through shallow waters. The Hinckley Bermuda 40 is hard to beat for versatility, combining classic looks with the shallow draught and generous interior space.

Early models from the 60s and 70s start around $80,000, but later models land well above our $100,000 threshold.

Island Packet 35

Island Packet 35 sailboat anchored at harbor

Although only in production for six years, 178 Island Packet 35s made their way onto the market. These vessels have become justifiably popular with coastal cruisers and bluewater sailors alike.

These cruisers are available in two designs; long-keel or long-keel with centerboard – both of which come with cutter rigging.

The design is conservative and built for comfort rather than speed. Inside space is very generous, with a 12-foot beam, a v-berth cabin in the forepeak, and a double cabin on the aft port side.

Island Packet 35’s appear on the used market regularly, so locating one shouldn’t be too much of a hassle.

Prices start at around $65,000.

Niagara 35 yacht at a dock

The Niagara 35 is a popular cruiser available in two exciting models, each one coming with a fantastic interior design.

The original model features a center galley and marine toilet that separates the fore and aft areas. The saloon is completely closed off, making it useful during extended passage journeys.

The later model has a double-berth forward, separated from the saloon by the head and shower. Both models include a spacious cockpit design. Through its 12 years of production, 260 Niagara 35’s went on the market – so you can regularly find them for sale.

Early models start around $30,000, with later models coming in closer to $70,000.

White Nordic 40 sailboat with blue sails in a marina

Only 32 of the Robert Perry-designed Nordic 40s went through production, making them exclusive and difficult to find. If you do manage to get your hands on one, however, you won’t be disappointed.

The fin-keel and skeg-mounted rudder design allow for up to six people to stay comfortably, including extra storage space for luggage and provisions.

The Perry design is recognized for the quality of its fittings, including rod-rigging and full hull insulation on early models. After 1987, they cut back on a few design features, but it’s still a quality boat.

If you can manage to find a Nordic 40, it will make an excellent investment.

While it may be rare to find one below our $100,000 mark, it is possible.

Passport 40

Passport 40 sailboat anchored near shore

Built in Taiwan, the Passport 40 is another excellent design by Robert Perry. Sporting a fin-keel and a skeg-mounted rudder, the design is known for its well-balanced performance.

Originally supplied with a sloop-rig, the majority have an inner stay, fitted to allow a double headsail. This cutter-style rig makes the Passport 40 even more suitable for ocean crossings.

The interiors are well designed – as you’d expect from a Robert Perry – and make for comfortable living during long passages.

Peterson 44

Peterson 44 sailboat with a mountain backdrop

The Peterson 44 was designed and built as a performance cruiser, combining sufficient speed and sea-kindly handling.

A low center-cockpit, 10,000 pounds of lead ballast, and a long fin keel allow this vessel to take turbulent conditions in stride without sacrificing the crew’s comfort.

Internally, there is plenty of space in the well-designed cabin. For long passages, there’s a 132-gallon water tank and a 117-gallon fuel tank.

Finding a Peterson 44 may be your only problem. They manufactured about 200 boats, but owners rarely like to part with them – adding to their intrigue and value.

Prices for these yachts vary widely. Expect to pick up an older model between $50,000 and $75,000.

Prout Snowgoose 37

Prout Snowgoose 37 catamaran on a mooring line

As the only catamaran on our list, the Prout Snowgoose 37 is a proven boat for circumnavigation on the bluewater trail.

A standout feature of the early Snowgoose models is its narrow beam, which allows them to navigate canals easily. These boats are popular in Europe and are common on the journey between Spain and France on the Mediterranian. Additionally, the Prout Snowgoose 37 can fit into a single-hull marina, reducing berthing costs when compared to most other catamarans.

If you have never considered a catamaran in the past, the Prout Snowgoose 37 may change your mind.

Prices start near $45,000, with later models reaching over $100,000.

Two people on the back of a Shannon 38 sailboat

The Shannon 38 comes in two styles, with either an aft cockpit or pilothouse. Shannon Yachts are known for their build quality and attention to detail, and the 38 is no exception. The boat is available as either a ketch or cutter rig, but it’s renowned for its performance at sea in both forms.

Only 100 were built, with the final boat launched in 1988. If you can find one on the used market, it will make a competent bluewater cruiser.

Prices start at $40,000 for older models, with newer models inching closer to our $100,000 mark.

Tartan 4100 Spark sailboat on a cloudy day

Only 80 of the Tartan 41s were manufactured, although they produced a similar Tartan 43 with the same molds. It is a fin keel design, with a skeg-mounted rudder and sloop-rigging. In its day, it was considered a fast cruiser, but now they’re mostly made for comfort.

If you’re looking at a Tartan 41, check out the keel dimensions. The keel was undersized on earlier models, which caused heavy-weather steering issues. The boatyard redesigned the later models, and some retrofitting has been done on the originals.

Prices start around $45,000 and reach upwards of $70,000.

Tayana 37 bluewater sailboat with an American flag

No list of bluewater sailboats would be complete without the Tayana 37. It’s a beautiful boat designed by Robert Perry that comes in three variants; cutter, ketch, and pilothouse.

Built to compete against the popular Westsail 32, the 37 became a good seller – with almost 600 launched to date. Today, they are manufactured in limited numbers, as the traditional teak-heavy design is now less popular.

If you can find a good Tayana 37, cruising the oceans will be a pleasure in this sturdy and robust vessel.

Early models cost around $45,000, with newer or retrofitted models topping $75,000.

Valiant 40 cruiser with white sails designed by Robert Perry

Another boat designed by Robert Perry, the Valiant 40 is one of the most sought-after bluewater cruisers on the used market. By the end of production, two manufacturers were able to put out around 200 boats, so it’s certainly possible to get your hands on one.

With a fin keel, reasonably heavy displacement, and solid build, open ocean cruising is made comfortable in the Valiant 40.

The Valiant’s trademark is the canoe stern, something Perry has carried over into many of his designs. The boat’s performance sets it apart from the more traditional heavy-cruisers, and it still has many admirers.

Expect to pay upwards of $45,000 for an early Valiant, but well-maintained vessels will command much higher prices.

Wauquiez Pretorien 35

Wauquiez Pretorien 35 small sailboat

When the weather gets rough, most people prefer bigger, heavier cruisers. Small boats generally don’t perform as well in harsh conditions, but the Pretorien 35 is an exception.

Built to IOR specifications, it’s a short, wide-beam design, with a ballast in the keel that makes up half of the displacement. It may be disappointing in light winds, but as the breeze picks up, the Pretorien comes alive.

Wauquiez built boats are known for their quality finish, so you shouldn’t hold any doubts when buying a used Pretorien.

Prices start around $39,000.

Westsail 32

White Westsail 32 cruiser in a marina

At just 32 feet, the Westsail might be a surprising inclusion on our list. However, the design has proven itself many times over and remains popular with many cruisers.

With a long keel, transom-mounted rudder, and heavy displacement, these are seaworthy yachts.

The flipside to this is that the performance can be underwhelming. The Westsails are known for being slow, safe boats that will get you wherever you need to go – making them perfect for leisurely cruising.

Over 800 vessels entered the market between 1971 and 1981, so there should be plenty available if you look hard enough. The other point to remember is that they sold them as owner-completion kits, so the internal fitments, in particular, will vary in quality.

With so many available, the prices remain reasonable – with an early Westsail 32 fetching around $29,000 and well-maintained older models coming in closer to $50,000.

Remember: When buying a bluewater cruising yacht for less than $100,000, compromise is inevitable.

If you’re looking for a seaworthy, heavy-displacement design, you’ll have to compromise on the boat’s age. Choosing a modern, light design will allow you more for your money.

The best advice for buying a boat is to be truly honest with yourself by defining your needs and separating them from your desires.

3. 52’ Jefferson 2000

$200 000 sailboat

Every once in a blue moon, you may hear about a friend of a friend who bought a 20-year-old boat that’s in such good condition it practically has that new boat smell. RIP RAP is the perfect example of an exceptionally well maintained and cared for Jefferson Rivanna Cockpit Motor Yacht. The vast majority of her life has been spent in the fresh waters of the Great Lakes, yet she demonstrated her seaworthiness on a voyage along the Great Loop.

With that type of time on the water, most vessels show their age in the engine room. Yet it would be a challenge to find a boat with her experience in this excellent condition, both mechanically and cosmetically. This is your chance to be that friend of a friend who buys a used motor yacht under $200K. RIP RAP is for sale with Denison Yachting in Chicago, Illinois.

Best feature: She’s incredibly seaworthy, strong, and stable for a motor yacht with as much use as this one.

Contact broker: Jeff Phillips

4. 48’ Ocean Yachts 1990

$200 000 sailboat

RADIANCE is a 2 stateroom, 3 head, 48 foot Ocean Motor Yacht built in 1990. She gets high marks for max-volume interior space, solid performance, and signature Ocean value. This motor yacht underwent plenty of upgrades over the years, including all new Garmin 7600 series electronics, new batteries, and a new jet bow thruster. RADIANCE is powered by reliable Detroit Diesels with a new exhaust system installed in 2019 along with a Westerbeke 11KW generator. She’s a Great Loop veteran and maximized for comfortable living. At $199,000, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by her value.

Best Sailboats Under $20,000 | Life of Sailing

December 27, 2023

You can buy a fully-equipped and serviceable sailboat for less than $20,000 on the used market. Most of these vessels are fiberglass sloops.

Used sailboats between 20 and 30 feet in length can be found for between $10,000 and $20,000 nationwide, especially on the coast. Catalina, O'Day, and Islander sailboats are common in this price range and lots of fun to sail.

Table of contents

What to Look for When Buying a Used Sailboat

When buying a used sailboat, it's essential to carefully inspect the vessel and look for flaws and structural issues. Sailboats in this price range are often ready to sail or just need minor improvements.

For the price, an older fiberglass 20 to 30-foot sailboat should be in good to excellent condition. Here's what to look for when buying a used sailboat and what to expect in the sub-$20,000 range.

Overall Condition

The overall condition of the boat is important, as it gives you an idea of how well the vessel was maintained. A sailboat with a clean, glossy hull, a solid deck, fresh varnish, and polished brass is an excellent sign of a responsible owner.

However, a sailboat with rust, corroded aluminum parts, a filthy hull, and a moldy interior was likely neglected in more ways than one. The first impressions of a sailboat can give you a pretty good idea of what lies below the surface.

Hull and Deck

Fiberglass boats are quite impervious to weather and corrosion, but problems occur when water penetrates the hull. Soft spots form around areas where the fiberglass cracks and water permeates.

Look for 'dented' areas of the deck where water pools up, as deformities can be a sign of something worse going on underneath. Check the bilge for excessive water but be mindful that some boats came with 'wet' bilges.

Does the vessel have all of its standing rigging tightened and maintained? What about sails, halyards, and sheets? If the rigging is present and neatly organized, it's a good sign that you're getting your money's worth.

If the vessel has an inboard motor, check the condition and fire it up. Inboards can be an expensive nightmare if they're neglected, which is often the case on used sailboats. See how it runs and make sure it responds to forward and reverse.

Sailboats are notorious for poor wiring and electrical issues. Much of the time, sailboats were shoddily wired from the factory, and sometimes the issue is related to improper maintenance or water damage.

Check the switchboard and make sure everything works. Try the radio, cabin lights, engine starter, hydraulic systems, and bilge pumps. A few broken lights or dead outlets are acceptable, but an electrically-neglected vessel can be a nightmare and a navigational hazard.

Best Affordable Used Sailboats Under 20k

Owning a used sailboat is a great way to explore local waterways and occupy the weekends. Sailboats made by well-known manufacturers were produced in huge numbers in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

These vessels are seaworthy and affordable, which makes them an excellent choice for budget-friendly sailing. Here are seven of the best used sailboats for under $20,000.

7. West Wight Potter 19

{{boat-info="/boats/west-wight-potter-19"}}

It's difficult to omit the West Wight Potter 19 from a list of the best affordable sailboats for under $20,000, as this vessel is exceptional by almost every metric. The West Wight Potter 19 is the ultimate small trailer sailboat.

The vessel is a V-bottom sloop with a fiberglass hull and a centerboard. It was introduced in 1971 and has since become very popular from the United States all the way to Australia. It's a hardy coastal and inland cruising vessel that's made occasional offshore trips, including one from San Francisco to Hawaii.

It measures just under 19 feet overall and has a width of 7 feet 6 inches. With the keel up, it has a draft of only 6 inches, making it a beachable and trailerable cruising boat.

For its size, the West Wight Potter 19 has spacious accommodations below. It features a center-mounted split galley with a stove and a sink, along with space for a head below the stove.

A V-berth upfront offers sleeping quarters for two, and two additional berths aft bring the comfortable capacity up to four. The centerboard trunk in the center of the cabin features rigging to raise, lower, and lock the centerboard.

The West Wight Potter 19 features a fast-rigging system that allows one person to raise and rig the mast in just a few minutes. It's easy to sail, safe, and plenty of fun. Plus, the hull features positive floatation foam, which makes it quite literally unsinkable.

6. Contessa 26

{{boat-info="/boats/contessa-26"}}

The Contessa 26 is a unique and capable mid-sized sailboat. It's a fast boat and a common sight at long-range regattas like the singlehanded TransPac race from San Francisco to Hawaii.

The Contessa 26 was produced starting in 1966, but the design dates much further back. The basic hull shape of the Contessa 26 was based on a Nordic Folkboat designed in the late 1930s for speed and agility at sea. As it turned out, the design also proved to be quite seaworthy.

The Contessa 26 was produced up until the end of the 1970s. She measures 25.5 feet overall, with a waterline length of 20 feet. The Contessa 26 has a reasonable beam of 7.5 feet, giving it good stability and seakeeping characteristics without sacrificing speed or handling.

The Contessa 26 is not a trailerable sailboat by most definitions, as it weighs 5,400 lbs and has a 4-foot draft. It has a full ballast keel, which makes it a stout offshore sailing platform. That said, its relatively small draft makes it safe to operate in shallow inland waters.

The accommodations of the Contessa 26 are excellent for its size, and it comfortably sleeps between one and five adults. It features standing headroom, a basic galley, a head with shower, and a standard V-berth upfront.

Space below leaves much to be desired, as vessels like the Catalina 30 outshine it significantly. But overall, the Contessa 26 is an excellent cruising sailboat with a classic design and sharp performance.

5. Catalina 30

{{boat-info="/boats/catalina-30"}}

The Catalina 30 is one of the best used sailboats available for coastal and offshore cruising. If spacious accommodations are important to you, then you can't go wrong with this 30-foot Catalina sloop.

The vessel features a tall and stout Bermuda rig with an aluminum mast and standard rigging. The Catalina 30 measures 29.92 feet overall, with a length of 25 feet at the waterline. With a beam of 10.83 feet, the Catalina 30 is a wide and stable vessel.

Catalina 30 sailboats feature a long fin keel and a relatively deep 5.25-foot draft, which requires care when operating in shallow water. However, offshore the Catalina 30 has proven to be a seaworthy and well-handling vessel.

Overall, the Catalina 30 weighs just over 10,200 lbs. She's not exactly trailerable, but most marinas can haul out a Catalina 30 without too much trouble.

Interior accommodations on board are stellar. With sleeping room for seven adults, the Catalina 30 is a fantastic family boat. It features a full galley, a head and shower, a chart table, and a spacious dinette.

Over 6,000 Catalina 30 sailboats have been produced since 1972, making it one of the most popular sailboats ever built. A decent used Catalina 30 can be had for around $10,000 to $15,000 on the used market.

4. Islander 28

{{boat-info="/boats/islander-28"}}

Another popular and classic 1970s fiberglass sloop is the Islander 28. Launched in 1975, the Islander 28 is an affordable and well-handling sailboat with a reputation for durability and seaworthiness.

The Islander 28 is a masthead sloop with a spade rudder and a fin keel. It displaces 7,000 lbs and has a relatively wide 9.83-foot beam. The Islander 28 measures 27.92 feet overall with a waterline length of 23.08 feet.

Islander sailboats are some of the most common vessels of the 1970s and 1980s. And though not as numerous as the Catalina 30, the Islander 28 is still a popular boat on the used market.

Islander 28 sailboats aren't exactly shoal draft, but their moderate 5-foot draft means they're safe to operate in most harbors. And while not technically trailerable, the Islander 28 is small and light enough to be hauled out and repaired in most boatyards.

The Islander 28 sleeps six adults comfortably and features full accommodations below. These include two seats, a galley, a table, a head with shower, and a V-berth forward.

An Islander 28 is a wise choice for coastal and offshore cruising. It's a stout, safe, and fun boat for the family, and it's easy for moderately experienced sailors to handle. A decent used fully-equipped Islander 28 can be found for less than $20,000 on the used market.

3. Compac 23

{{boat-info="/boats/com-pac-23"}}

Compac is a well-known sailboat manufacturer with a long history of producing swift compact cruising boats. The Compac 23 is a large sailboat in a miniature package.

This vessel is ideal for those looking for a small and easy to handle sailboat with spacious accommodations. It features a fiberglass hull, an extensive cabin, and a shallow draft of just over 2 feet.

The Compac 23 has an overall length of just an inch shy of 24 feet, and a beam of 8 feet. Its dimensions make it stable and easy to handle, and it doesn't heel excessively. Overall, the Compac 23 displaces 3,000 lbs.

The interior accommodations of the Compac 23 set it apart from other vessels in its size category. The interior features a separated galley with a sink and a stove, seats, and a V-berth upfront. It also has plenty of well-thought-out storage space throughout the cabin.

The Compac 23 is also available with a pilothouse configuration, which features standing headroom and a clever table arrangement aft. The vessel features a skeg rudder and a long fixed fin keel, which removes the cumbersome centerboard trunk from the cabin.

{boat-info="/boats/cal-25"}}

The Cal 25 is a formidable cruiser for its size. While technically a fin- keel sailboat , the Cal 25 features a long ballast keel that offers superior stability and windward performance.

Some would consider the Cal 25 a "flush-deck" sailboat, as the top section of the cabin runs flush with the bow to the cockpit. This design increases cabin space and improves the lines of the boat.

The Cal 25 was produced between 1965 and 1976, making it one of the older fiberglass sloops on our list. That said, Cal Yachts build quality is excellent, and many serviceable examples of the 1,848 original Cal 25 sailboats still exist.

The vessel measures 25 feet overall, with a waterline length of 20 feet. She has a beam of exactly 8 feet and a relatively shallow draft of just 4 feet. The Cal 25 has a modest displacement of 4,000 lbs, making it a relatively practical trailer-sailer option.

The Cal 25 usually came with an outboard motor instead of an inboard to save space. The helm is controlled by a tiller, which maneuvers a skeg rudder located underneath the cockpit. With the mast collapsed, the Cal 25 is a great sailboat for winter storage and summer use.

The level of fit and finish varies between boats, as some were outfitted with finer wood and more premium features than others. The cockpit is spacious for its size, and the cabin headroom is excellent. The Compac 23 is an ideal used shoal-draft cruising sailboat in the sub-$20,000 category, and it's still produced today.

1. Catalina 22

{{boat-info="/boats/catalina-22"}}

The Catalina 22 was the first sailboat of countless families across the United States. This sleek 22-foot vessel was designed to be the perfect 'starter boat' for sailors who wanted to explore inland waterways and coastal areas.

The Catalina 22 was first introduced in 1969. It has an overall length of 21.5 feet and a beam of 7.67 feet. Catalina 22 sailboats are truly trailerable, as most come with a retractable swing keel. With the keel or centerboard down, the Catalina 22 has a draft of 5 feet.

The Catalina 22 is the most popular sailboat ever produced in its class. With over 15,000 built, this vessel is common on the used market, and parts are abundant. Overall, a standard Catalina 22 sloop weighs around 2,490 lbs, making it practical to tow behind most half-ton pickup trucks or V8 SUVs.

Fiberglass boats like the Catalina 22 are an excellent choice for first-time sailors looking for a fun and capable family boat with overnight accommodations. The Catalina 22 sleeps four adults comfortably, but five can fit if the crew are comfortable with a tighter arrangement.

The most unique feature of the Catalina 22 is its camper-like pop top. The top of the cabin, which normally provides sitting headroom, can be popped up several inches past the original height. This is an excellent feature for cooking at anchor, as it provides standing headroom over the galley and part of the settee.

Pre-owned Catalina 22 sailboats in ready-to-sail configuration run anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000. Fiberglass sailboats like the Catalina 22 make excellent freshwater or saltwater daysailers, and some have completed lengthier offshore voyages.

12 Best Catamarans Under 200k and What You Should Know!

$200 000 sailboat

As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. We may also earn commissions if you purchase products from other retailers after clicking on a link from our site.

Reading forums, watching youtube, and listening to yacht salespeople, I got the sense that there are  no good Catamaran boats under USD 200 000. I sincerely believe that this is wrong , and hopefully, after you have read this article, you will have a better understanding of which boats under 200k are worth looking into.

The 12 Best Catamarans you can buy for under USD 200 000 (Read below to understand why):

  • Gemini Legacy 35
  • Leopard 3800
  • Seawind 1200
  • Fountaine Pajot Bahia 46

Below  I will present more in-detail information  about some of these boats; I have chosen the ones that I have studied myself and feel confident enough to talk about.

This article is a result of the research I am doing; I am looking for a Catamaran in between $100k and $200k; the list above includes some of the most exciting examples that I believe also are the best options if your budget is under 200k. As I learn more about each catamaran on the list, I will update this post and share the knowledge with you guys!

$200 000 sailboat

Table of Contents

2002 Lagoon 380, $160 000

This is the most famous and well know of all Catamarans; it’s been around for many years and has a large community built around the boat. It is easy to understand why this is the most sold catamarans of all time. Using that community to your advantage when it comes to repairs and general knowledge is excellent since it will save you a lot of money and time since many others have already made all the mistakes, so you dont have to.

It is known for being easy to handle and a stable platform both during ocean crossing and sleeping at anchor.

Blue Water:

The L380 is known to be a slow catamaran, this is due to the wide hulls and spacious interior, another concern I have is the somewhat low bridge deck clearance . The low bridge deck clearance makes for a lot of noise while going upwind but it is also what makes the saloon so roomy. Taking the Lagoon out for day trips I found this boat very comfortable with a well-planned interior (video below) but a little on the sluggish side for me.

In summary, i believe this catamaran is perfect for coastal sailing and totally ok for Ocean Crossings.

$200 000 sailboat

The Lagoon 380 is not in any way an unsafe boat, but I would like to discuss a few things that I have come across during my research of this boat.

The L380 doesn’t have dedicated bilge pumps ; this might be true for newer designs, but they are nonexistent for the older ones.

As a rule of thumb, when it comes to safety, you want back-ups because when you need a safety device such as a bilge pump, you want it to work and operate effectively. I have experienced this firsthand when I got a big hole(long story for another time) in my boat, and I had to use all the pumps I could. What happened? of course, one pump broke, but since I had back-ups, including a manual hand pump, we were able to stay afloat.

If I hadn’t had any backups, this story would be very different.

The video below shows a Lagoon 380 i visited a few weeks ago and why im now looking for something different!

Liveaboard:

The Lagoon 380 is by many the preferred options when it comes to making a boat your home. It is roomy and allows for wide berths(beds) and a big galley(kitchen).

It is also known for being an easy Catamaran to maintain and service. One example is the ease of doing repairs on your engines. To exemplify this ill, give you a quote from the owner of a lagoon 380 called  Indigo Moon

“…  I can change the entire seawater cooling pump on one of my yanmars in less than five minutes, literally. “ Owner of Indigo Moon discussing the simplicity of engine repairs

2013 Gemini Legacy 35, $188 000

The American made Gemini known for its small beam, making it fit in a standard slip and making it possible to be lifted out with a regular travel lift found in many marinas.

This also means that  it can be transported by truck across the country , which is very uncommon in the catamaran world. They are built by the thousands, and due to their small draft (34 inches) can go right up to the beach.

The Legacy gives the owner the possibility to enjoy warm coastal waters in a cheap and manageable way. For this type of circumstance, it is for many the perfect choice. The boat is easy to sail and a walk in the park to operate in the marina.

$200 000 sailboat

Although it has been done, the Gemini is  not really up for the task of serious bluewater sailing , so having a discussion of safety needs to be in the context of coastal waters.

I believe that the Gemini Legacy is very well suited for coastal waters , where the need for handling big waters is a minimum. If it were in the blue water category, I would discuss trampolines instead of the solid deck.

But for coastal waters where there is a higher risk of running aground than of big seas, the small draft really is useful since it will allow you to go to places where monohulls can not allowing you for a safer and better experience.

The small bridge deck clearance is also something that is more suitable for coastal weekend sailing!

This doesn’t mean that you can’t go to the Bahamas or BVI from Florida; it only means that you have to plan your trip to make sure you dont get into bad weather offshore.

It is definitely possible to live aboard a Legacy and enjoy it; it’s not a giant boat, but it has been done, and  this couple  is an interesting example of that.

The cockpit is big and allows for much more social activities than on let’s say an offshore monohull, which is tiny compared.

$200 000 sailboat

2002 Dean 440, $185 000

Just as many other “small” boat builders, Dean Catamarans are built out of South Africa. South African catamarans tend to have less bridge deck clearance, but this is probably one with the biggest, and as far as I understand, it is not a big issue with bridge deck slamming on the Dean 440.

Dean Catamarans are known for their excellent build quality and structural integrity, making them great for big ocean passaging and heavy weather.

In combination with the reputation for speed, this makes for a great cruising catamaran; the only downside might be the volatility in price compared to the more commons boats such as Lagoon or Leopard, which tend to be more stable price-wise.

Ensure you get a reasonable price on your Dean, so you get all of that money back! And if you are on the hunt for a smaller Dean cat, I suggest you check out this sailing couples channel Sailing Lady Africa .

$200 000 sailboat

2001 Lagoon 410, $ 199 000

Much like its little brother, this boat is loved by many, it is very spacious and like its brother also not the fastest thing you can get. Sailing upwind will also not be the most exciting thing you will do on this cat.

Researching this boat read a review stating that this specific model tends to pitch less than other ships of the same size, I’m not sure but if you are prone to seasickness then maybe this might be something to dive a little deeper into

The lagoon 410 employs big trampolines instead of a solid deck; this is a big deal for big ocean sailing. One possible catastrophic situation is to bury the bows in a wave and then have the boat pitchpole, creating a potentially deadly situation.

Many would argue this cat is perfect; it’s big, with plenty of room for storage such as scuba gear, surf gear, etc.

With its eight berth layout, you can bring your family plus the neighbors family and still have plenty of room left. I think this is one of the coolest boats around.

And with those giant sugar scoops at the back, there is nothing id like to do more than go for a swim and then climb back up on one!

NOTE: Lately, there have been some issues with Lagoon bulkheads, so make sure you check them thoroughly before buying. For more information, I recommend you watch this lagoon 450 owners youtube channel .

$200 000 sailboat

1997 Manta 40, $190 000

The Manta is a well-built boat able to cruise around the world ; compared to the Lagoon 410, it’s smaller and offers less space for your gear. In addition, it is said to be one of the most sturdy builds in the 40ft length region.

The Manta also has a very shallow draft, at 3 feet 8 inches; it gives the captain the ability to go almost anywhere without the risk of running aground.

The boat also offers ease of servicing since the engines are located under the bunks in each hull, and access is excellent even if you’re a tall person.

Equipped with the correct offshore gear and skillset of the crew, this cat will take you wherever you want to go .

The Manta 40 is not a “true” 40 ft boat. It is more of a stretched out 36 ft since the older ones where almost flat at the stern, and adding sugar scopes made it the few extra feet to qualify as a 40.

The Manta has a higher bridge deck clearance than many, which reduces the well familiar pounding noise from a cat heading into the waves.

The boat is configured for short-handed sailing , which means that all the lines go all the way to the cockpit; the lines are color-coded and stay clear of the seating area.

All the adjustments you need to do underway can be made from the cockpit, thus minimizing time outside the cockpit’s safe zone.

Compared to other boats in the same length category, the Manta is narrower and offers less space to store your gear, but at 65″ headroom in the hulls and standing headroom, there is plenty of room to stand tall.

2001 Prout 38, $199 000

Prouts is and old English manufacturer that went bankrupt a couple of years ago.  They are well known for their durability and excellent build quality.

They are not the fastest thing you can find, not even compared to other cruising catamarans, but they probably are amongst the boats with the best reputation.

The Prout 38 is a true and tried bluewater boat  with many circumnavigations under its belt. Its bridge deck clearance is low, which should mean a lot of slamming, but according to the review of a couple of owners, it supposedly isn’t a big thing.

The reason for the low bridge deck clearance and the odd-looking nacelle under the boat is to get a more stable boat; they moved the center of gravity lower.

Prout achieved more headspace and lowering the center of gravity by reducing floor height.

The boat is a massive and sturdy thing; some might even say over the top sturdy. The Prout also uses fixed kells which is an excellent way to protect your propeller when beaching the cat(or running aground)

A solid deck is used in place of trampolines. But instead of a squared full deck, they have cut out the foremost part making the bow have a three-edged look.

This reduces the deck area, which is useful for removing water but is unfortunate since it also removes living space.

As I have mentioned, the sturdy build adds structural integrity and keeps the boat from falling to pieces,  but the downside is that the ship is cumbersome and doesnt have that excellent loading capability.

This means slower speed and not being able to outrun lousy weather as good as a faster boat.

Prout made the 38 models be able to fit three couples; id says it is possible, but you shouldn’t expect as much room as you will get on a Lagoon 380 or 410.

2008 Leopard 38, $200 000

I feel this list wouldn’t be even halfway complete if I didn’t mention the Leopard 38(or 40); this boat is one of the top ships out there; together with Fountaine Pajot and Lagoon, they are the most successful boatbuilders of today.

The Leopard 38 has managed to create the right balance between performance and cruising/comfort.

This cat does not have, the very common problem with low bridge deck clearance induced slamming, while at the same time being a very stable platform, this boat, I believe, will take you anywhere you want to go.

Interacting with people that live abord their Leopard, I often hear how easy it is to trim the boat and how nice and quick you put a reef in the sail. This can all be done from the cockpit, which reduces the amount of time you need to be in danger from big waves when the seas are big.

The  big engines  are also a safety factor since they will take you upwind at around 7kts(of course depending on winds and currents, etc.) and gives you the ability to avoid bad weather.

Not only is Leopard 38 a comfortable home on the water, but it is also  straightforward to maintain and service,  something that is very important since you’ll be doing a lot of it.

As anybody who has ever lived on a boat knows, 50% of your time will be dedicated to maintenance and repairs, that’s just how it ends up being 🙂 But this boat is perfect for that in many ways., firstly there are soo many of them built which means that there is a lot of information and forums where you can ask on how to fix stuff.

Secondly, the spare parts are more likely to exist in the local shipyard, which is a big deal since shipping spares to a remote destination usually is extremely expensive.

Getting the right boat is tricky; if you feel you need more info on how to buy the right boat, check out  this Buyers Guide .

I couldn't resist attempting a balanced lug sail after seeing Jim Michalak's wonderful information on sail making. Jim may have done more for demystifying boat designing and building than about anyone I know. He offers a series of  newsletters on all aspects of small boat design and building. I'm grateful to Herb McLeod for introducing me to him.

Here I have a pile of building photos that might be of interest to builders or aspiring builders.  Here's a patriotic version of Featherwind done tack and tape, on Richard's Boat Page. Also some good building pics.

I have owned the boat for the last 22 0+ years, and have had great times in sailing all sorts of weather on Lake Michigan. Overnighters, day sails, weekends with the family - great memories. She sails well, though not a racer. I have single handed her, and have had as many as 8 on board at a time. We've slept 2 adults and 2 kids on her at a time. No galley, and no head, though there is a camp potty stowed on board. She comes with depth gauge, compass, radio, PFDs, fire extinguisher, and more. The engine is a 6 hp, 2 cycle Yamaha long shaft that starts every time. Includes 2 fuel tanks. The trailer is tandem axle, and pulls just fine.

Model Ensign

Length 22.5

In the words of the Ensign Association, "The Ensign is the largest class of full keel sailboats in North America, with over 2000 boats manufactured since 1962. Designed by Carl Alberg, its sustained popularity is due to very solid and durable construction, and a design that lends itself equally and admirably to comfortable family cruising, enjoyable day sailing, and close, strategic, tactical racing. As a family day sailor, the Ensign has a large, deep cockpit, with enough room to comfortably seat six to eight adults. Its full keel provides a secure, stable ride, and its three foot draft makes it perfect for the shallower waters of bays and lakes and for anchoring fairly close to a protected shore. The cabin space is more than adequate for keeping lots of gear dry, for providing immediate refuge from rainy weather, and can even sleep a couple of people... even more if they are friendly." The Ensign is also a fine racing boat, with fleets at several locations in the New York area."Azores" is in top condition. It has a mainsail, a working jib, and #1 and #2 genoas, all in top condition. The 2013 5hp Honda outboard engine is in excellent condition, with less than 25 hours of use. Included are a cockpit cover, a new marine radio; a new, unused head; a 9-foot rubber raft, never used; a wheeled cradle for winter storage, and an overboard ladder. The hull below the waterline and the woodwork were painted last winter. Although the boat lacks a spinnaker, it has all the deck hardware to mount a spinnaker. Hardware includes two coffee grinder winches, boom vang, two sets of jib sheets, a boom runner, and other hardware and lines.I bought "Azores" several years ago and find that at age 87 I can no longer easily manage it. "Azores" is moored at the Sheepshead Bay Yacht Club at 3076 Emmons Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11235. I will deliver it there. A payment of $500 is due within three days of agreement. the balance is due on transfer of title.

1989 J Boats J/22 Tis J 22 is here at our showroom, on its trailer. It comes with Main Jib, and spinnaker, as well as a 2011Mercury 4/HP 4 stroke motor. This would be a great entry level day sailor, that will allow one to grow into a fun, and excellent handling sail boat.  The J-22 is the choice of one-design fleets and institutional sailing programs worldwide, because she has proven to be a great value and a favorite among juniors and adults alike. The hull and deck are unyielding Baltek-cored laminates. All the gear is first class, ensuring minimum maintenance, optimum performance and ease of handling. J-22 has a comfortable self-bailing cockpit with 7-foot long seats and room for four to six people in the cabin to escape the rain or cold.  J-22 is built for safety with buoyancy tanks and offshore hatches. Her 700-pound lead keel lowers the center of gravity, creating nearly 1,700 foot-pounds of righting moment at 90 degrees of heel. In 1995 there were 1,200 J-22s sailing in 61 active fleets in eight countries on three continents, which qualifies J-22 for IYRU International status. The J-22 Class Association promotes activities worldwide, publishing a yearbook and newsletters. For class racing, sails are restricted to main, small jib and spinnaker with total crew weight at 605 pounds. Its PHRF rating is 180 s-m.

I bought this in Michigan last year with the 10 hp chysler with electric start...I brought it home and cleaned the exterior as it sat for many years...the motor and sails are in excellant condition and where alway stored inside . The interior needs cleaning and paint on the trailer and as all sailboats a good once over...the motor is guaranteed to run smoothly and I also put brand new tires and rims on with a spare if you plan on hauling it a long way (also greese bearings)needs lights but will install before you pick it up...possibly could meet you part way or deliver for fee? I had a fixed keel sailboat and hated the fact that I was stuck paying launch, dockage and storage fees and will never buy another boat I cant store and launch myself ....The draft is a little over a foot with this swing keel that makes it perfect for just about any launch at any lake. I recently became a grampa,my career is changing and Im looking to buy a house...so I have no time to sail this year and more then likely for many summers to come...Ill buy it back in 3 or 4 years from you if you decide to sell it... as it to me is the perfect boat. You will save the price of this boat in 1 year what you would pay in storage ,dockage and lift fees...My loss is your gain... more pictures to follow:

First produced in 1968, it is one of the longest continuously produced sailboats in the world...Over 15000! Parts, videos and know-how are abound on the net 2005 last time previous owner had boat in water. I have never had boat in the water or was able to work on her. 2005 was the last time I was inside the cabin before preparing this listing for ebay. She has been closed up for ten years and is dirty in and out. I sprayed Windex in a few areas inside and dirt just wiped off with no scrubbing. Water, at one time, intruded around the forward hatch. Has complete set of interior cushions in gold plaid pattern. Most are in surprising good condition. NO SMELLS. One has a 1.5x1.5 inch hole in fabric that isn't seen when in place. 1 or 2 have an area of cracking vinyl. In all the noted exceptions, I don't think they would be seen or stop you from sailing PREVIOUS OWNER'S DESCRIPTION: '75 Catalina 22 pop top w/trailer • fair condition - Project boat • Swing Keel • Pop top • Sail Inventory: 2 mains, Jib (Marked San Juan works w/Cat 22s) and 150 Furling I think all are usable • Scupper upgrade in transom • Ablative paint on hull and keel • Never in salt water • Needs good cleaning • I know of no problems with the swing keel • No known leaks around keel pin • Comes with 2 Rudders. Usable but not perfect • Port side blemish in the gel coat • One pop top support needs to be re-bedded • Front hatch needs the frame reinstalled and sealed • Soft spot forward of hatch • Crack in cabin threshold but does not affect anything much • Cracks and crazing in the deck gelcoat that need filling • One stanchion base needs to be re-bedded • Small dent/crack in mast near stays, like pinched on one side at the spreaders. When raising the mast, one of the stays was caught and pulled the spreader forward. See photo. A pontoon boat repair guy told me that a braze could patch for about $25 • Needs halyards but I would get all new running rigging • Replace Hatch Boards or just cut a Plywood Hatch • Standing rigging, I am no judge but it worked when last used and it has been out of the elements since. • The forestay also has a quick-release lever purchased from Catalina Direct, along with quick-release pins for quicker and easier mast- raising and lowering. Those parts are, of course, stainless steel. • Will also include a sliding galley out of a 1984 Cat 22. It slides under the cockpit starboard seating when not in use. It has a faucet, sink, water fresh water holding tank, a drawer and a place for a small portable propane stove. I was going to sell it separately on ebay. They normally go from 150-200. TRAILER • Trailer in good shape, but could use some paint• Has 10 ft extension• Has surge brake system used for two trips since it was installed• Has Buddy Bearings• New load range 'C' tires were put on in Spring of 2010. 63 Miles total mileage as boat was towed from one of our rental homes to our house in Martinsville. 1999 Marshall Catboat

1999 Marshall Catboat

Oriental, North Carolina

1999 Marshall Catboat The Marshall Catboat 22 is a rugged, sea-kindly boat with classic looks that will turn heads in any harbor. Her two foot draft will let you access anchorages and coves that are off limits to most cruising sailboats. The Marshall 22 is roomy enough for a family of four and simple enough for a couple to enjoy gunkholing their local waters. An elegant daysailor, the Marshall 22 is also a capable long distance cruiser. Many of her owners have sailed their boats from New England to Florida and even as far north as Greenland. Accommodations below compare to those found in most 30-footers. "Grace" has been sailed and maintained by her current owner and it is with some hesitation that he has decided it is time to sell her. Don't miss this opportunity to own a true classic!

Bolger Featherwind - Dave Carnell $200 Sailboat

The spars on the Feather wind were made from a nice piece of straight grained yellow pine treated 2x6. I ripped it to 1-1/2" making it square and rounded the edged. Worked great for many years. The mast was laminated 2x4s of the same material and rounded.

Dave Carnell who was a friend of mine took Phil Bolgers Featherwind and made it simpler and easier to build. I was the first person to ever build one by using the tack and tape method, and visited him at his home when he lived in Wilmington, NC. Wish I still had that boat but she is way too big to car top.

Dave has now since moved to San Diego so his son could look after him. The sad thing was that about 2 days after I left his house his wife passed away. She had been ill for a very long time. He was also a genius! We had sandwiches and wine on his deck everyday I was there and went off shore in his old Simons Sea Skiff. I've lost contact with him and if he is still living he would be in his 90s. Good man!

I still have the original plans Dave gave me a long time ago. If I had a shop I would certainly build another one and it don't take that long to build. A week in the shop and I'd be sailing another one. It acutally goes together fairly quick. What takes time is the invisible butt joints on the sides. Other than that, it's just a very easy to build boat, and you don't have use that invisible joint on the side either. Standard construction is faster than tack and tape, stitch and glue or whatever.

Dave's old Nutmeg was water logged and he hadn't been able to take care of her due to his wife being ill and he was getting very old too. I think he was 80 when I visited him. Can't remember. The old boat weighed about 150 pounds or more! At one time I had 4 people..(none of us were lightweights) and Bubba... the other couples dog, a Golden Retriever at 108 pounds, and a huge, bigger than I can pick up cooler full of ice, beer, food, Twinkies fried chicken, etc! You name it! and the boat did fine. Dave said she would easily carry 1200 pounds. I believed him after that.

Talking about a great daysailer AND.....gunkholer in fairly sheltered waters? My Featherwind was the best. I later put a lightweight cabin roof on her, installed an anchor locker up front that was self draining, and mounted a 90 square foot balanced lug rig, then I added a bow sprint to handle a 35 sq. ft. jib and took off for parts unknown, new worlds to be discovered...to go where no man has gone before! Great boat! With those big sails, she could be a handful in a brisk wind and would walk off and leave everything in a slight breeze to moderate wind! I had three sets of reefing points in the main with a clubed self tending jib.

I took out some of the rocker when I built her that made her much faster. I could even reef the jib around the club. Only one set of reef points on the jib. I was playing around with that for trolling and fishing rather than to keep changing to a smaller sail just to slow down to catch fish. For general day sailing and holidays...mainly Memorial Day and July 4th, I still used the lateen rig because of the colors and she performed so well with it. I had her in 30 mph + winds at one time with the lateen and she went to warp speed!!!!! I also wound up breaking a mast shoe that day because of the severe winds, but that was easily repaired in about 10 minutes and we took off again! She weighed only 105 lbs. excluding the junk, mast, sails, anchor, etc.

I also made the oars for her and painted them red, white and blue. After about 3 years of hard use, I fiber glassed the hull and repainted her the same color scheme but the epoxy and glass cloth added noticeable weight and brought her up to about 140 pounds. And I also add two more long keel stringers on the bottom of the hull to stiffen up the 1/4" plywood.

When the big flood came I lost my camera too with all kinds of pictures! It was in the shop and I had not downloaded anything. It was a camera that did not have an SD card and had to be downloaded to the computer. I was getting ready to do an article on it ...well....after losing everything, including boats and trailers, it kind of took the wind out of my sails for several years. But if I get another shop one day....I will build another.

I'm also working on a super lightweight dolly that I can carry my PDRacer Wet Rooster . Just another project in the working! Nice breeze today, sunny, bright, and it would be great on the lake but a little on the cool side. Have a good one. R.

Personal Watercrafts

Personal watercraft vessels, more commonly referred to as “jet-skis” are also a great choice for having fun while out on the water for an affordable price.

These boats are small and easy to take with you no matter what type of vehicle you drive.

These are also easier to store because they can fit in more storage places and can even fit in a large enough garage.

Other Watercraft Types:

These boat types listed above are not the only choices of watercraft vessels that you can choose from.

There are plenty of other boats you could look at for lower and more affordable prices.

One boat type that does not have a lot of options for under 20,000 dollars is sailboats. Sailboats often come with live-in spaces and plenty of necessary equipment that makes the cost come out to more than 20,000 dollars.

There are some great small sailboats that are sold for less money, but they are not meant for more than a quick day out on the water.

12. Sunfish Sailboat

$200 000 sailboat

A Sunfish sailboat is small and only ideal for short trips and up to 2 passengers. This boat is easy to sail and can be a great boat for beginners.

This boat will cost you under $5,000.00 and can be towed by any vehicle or even mounted in your car.

Other great vessels that are under $20,000.00 are likely going to be non-motorized. These can include kayaks, canoes, paddleboats, and other options.

These are also ideal for day trips and even river travel.

These types of vessels might even fall under $1,000.00.

Used Boats:

If you are planning to look into purchasing a boat, and you want something affordable, you have a ton of options.

The boats listed above are all boats that fall under the 20,000.00 dollar threshold when they are new.

There are also some great used options when it comes to purchasing a boat.

A great way to look into getting a used boat for an incredible price is through a dealership, boat broker, or even online.

Most used boats, even at a dealership, can come with a motor and trailer already. Dealerships also often offer bundles for boats, trailers, and motors.

Buying a boat used can be a great way to save some money and get something with more space or features.

Fiberglass hulls are highly durable and often outlast the other aspects of the boat, such as motor, gears, steering, and electrical.

Make sure when you buy a used boat, you inspect is incredibly well and look for any cracks or other imperfections before you buy the boat.

You can even hire a marine inspector to look over your boat before you purchase it. This is a good idea because you will likely not be able to take out a warranty on a used boat, especially if you purchase from a private seller.

Other Costs to Consider With Your Boat Purchase:

$200 000 sailboat

You might think that you just want to get a basic boat and head out on the water. Most people do not plan for accessories or additional costs when they go boat shopping, because they think they will not need accessories or anything additional.

However, you cannot just head to the closest boat dealership and purchase a boat for under $20,000 as your only expense.

Most boats have additional purchases that are necessary before you can get out on the water.

These necessary purchases include a motor and a trailer.

Most times, motors and trailers are not sold with the boat unless the dealership is offering a bundle.

Trailers can vary in price from $600.00 to around $5,000.00 depending on the size and specifications that you need.

We have made a thorough list where you can see the average weight of boat trailers . It’s a great way to find out exactly how much weight the trailer will add to your rig.

Make sure when you are shopping for a boat trailer, you take the proper weight, length, axle, and legal requirements into account.

Motors can also be expensive with a price range of a couple of hundred dollars used to almost $90,000.00 dollars new.

This depends on the size, manufacturer, and horsepower of the motor.

You will also want to make sure you know about how much you can afford when it comes to boating accessories.

Available accessories can include:

  • GPS devices
  • Fish Finders
  • Life Jackets
  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Other safety equipment
  • First Aid Kit
  • Fishing Equipment
  • Watersport Equipment
  • Portable Bathrooms
  • Other necessary equipment

Maintenance Fees to Consider with Your Boat Purchase:

Another hidden cost of boat ownership is maintenance fees.

You should plan to spend approximately 10% of the cost of the boat in maintenance fees. This can vary depending on how much work you complete on your boat and how often you complete regular maintenance.

Maintenance can include cleaning, replacing things, painting the hull and other hull maintenance, and any other maintenance that you need to do.

This cost can be increased depending on what type of boat you have. Generally, sailboats require more maintenance than other types because there is more to manage.

Maintenance fees can also include expenses such as insurance costs and registration fees for your vessel.

You can reduce your insurance rate by taking a boater education course, especially in states that do not require boater education.

Storage Fees to Consider with Your Boat Purchase:

When considering your budget, make sure you also factor in storage fees.

You will need to store your boat somewhere all year long.

In the summer, unless you have a personal dock or storage area, you will likely have to spend money to put your boat somewhere.

This could include options both in and out of the water.

These options include:

  • Getting a slip at a marina or other dock
  • Storing your boat in a boatyard in between trips
  • Storing your boat in a boat storage building between trips

We have made an in-depth overview of exactly how much you should pay for boat storage. This article is very helpful in order to know what to expect.

You also need to plan to store your boat during the winter. If you do not have a building or area to store your boat in the winter, this will also be a fee that you can expect.

This expense can range wildly depending on what type of storage option you go with. Some more expensive options offer indoor storage with temperature control.

You will also need to factor in the cost of winterizing your boat, which can be as simple as cleaning it, properly taking care of the fluids and other parts, and covering it. This can also include applying a shrink wrap and other winterizing tricks.

Guy doing an inspection of a tiny house on wheels

Even though 20,000.00 dollars is a lower-end price for a boat and is considered affordable, you will likely not be expected to have $20,000.00 immediately for the purchase of your boat.

It is completely possible to finance your boat, motor, and trailer all in one loan.

Financing will often be your best option when it comes to purchasing your new vessel.

When you finance your boat you will have to keep in mind that you will be expected to fully insure your boat, and all of your documentation will need to have your lienholder listed.

You can find financing at your financial institution or often your dealership will finance your purchase or send it out to an institution they are affiliated with.

If you purchase your boat in the off-season you might even be able to find some deals at your bank or credit union, your dealership, or even both.

Make sure you shop around for the best interest rate and financing plan and do not just take the first option offered to you.

Even if you can afford to pay for the entire boat out of pocket, you might want to look into financing anyway.

]Financing can save you from having to deplete your savings account all at once and can be beneficial to saving money, which can be used for unexpected costs associated with your boat after purchase.

Final Thoughts:

When buying a boat, you will want to make sure you have a budget in mind that you know you will have no problem affording.

This means that you should not spend your entire boat budget on the purchase price because you will need to pay for sales tax, trailers, motors, other accessories, registration, title fees, maintenance, storage, fuel, and other things that you will need.

If you are looking to spend under 20,000 dollars, you will probably be looking at a smaller boat option.

When you buy a boat, you need to know that similar to an automobile, a boat experiences depreciation as soon as it is purchased. This means that you should not look at your boat as a financial investment but instead an investment in experience and entertainment.

You should not let this deter you from buying a boat.

Boating is a great way to spend time with family and friends and can be a highly memorable experience. Even though your boat will depreciate, it will be worth if for the experience and the memories that you will have.

Make sure that when you do decide to purchase a boat, you take everything into account when planning a budget and deciding how big of a boat you can afford.,

Caitlin Clark steps out in $200 Nike look after $17,000 Prada outfit at WNBA Draft

C aitlin Clark swapped her Prada fit, worth $17,000, for a laidback $220 Nike look after the Indiana Fever selected her with the first pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft on Monday night.

The former Iowa star point guard sported a light-colored sweatshirt and beige Nike joggers while leaving an interview at “Good Morning America” studios in New York City, as seen in new photos Tuesday.

Clark, 22, who was holding a white box, stepped out in a pair of Nike Dunk Low Retro Panda sneakers, while her boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, walked behind her.

The two-time Naismith Award winner opted for a more casual outfit after she wore a navy blue and white striped dress and heels while on “GMA.”

The night before, she nearly broke the internet when she wore head-to-toe Prada on the orange carpet at the draft, which took place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Clark’s $17,000 ensemble featured a rhinestone mesh crop top ($3,750) under a satin collared shirt ($5,500) and a matching miniskirt ($1,750), as well as pointed leather pumps ($1,200), according to Business Insider.

She accessorized with a Prada Galleria patent leather mini bag ($4,100) and a pair of acetate sunglasses ($575).

After she joined the Fever, Clark traded her designer heels for a pair of UGG clogs.

Clark, who has an estimated NIL of $3 million, said this was the first time Prada has ever dressed a male or female for the WNBA or NBA draft.

McCaffrey, who currently works as an assistant for the Indiana Pacers, was a big fan of Clark’s Prada outfit, as the former Iowa basketball player shared a few flirty emojis about it on X.

Clark’s “GMA” appearance came hours after the couple celebrated her big night at The Fleur Room on Moxy Chelsea’s 35th floor with some of her former Iowa teammates — Kate Martin , Jada Gyamfi and Gabbie Marshall as well as Raina Harmon, an assistant coach for the Hawkeyes.

Clark — the NCAA Division I all-time scoring leader, for men’s and women’s — played a major role in the dominance of women’s college basketball in the 2023-24 season and throughout March Madness.

The NCAA women’s title game between Clark’s Hawkeyes and the South Carolina Gamecocks surpassed the men’s UConn-Purdue championship matchup by millions.

Her presence helped ticket sales and TV ratings skyrocket.

Two hours after joining the Fever, Clark became Fanatics’ top-selling draft pick in any draft night history, according to Darren Rovell , founder of Cllct Media.

The WNBA will begin training camps on April 28 and the season starts May 14.

Police arrested four people over $300,000 of stolen Lego kits

Los Angeles citizens can rest easy knowing that a criminal theft ring is no longer stalking the city’s retail stores to feed a Lego black market. That’s because the California Highway Patrol (CHP) announced this week that it had arrested four people it accused of swiping what police estimated was “approximately $300,000” worth of Lego sets.

The four had allegedly burgled stores like Target, Home Depot, and Lowe’s of their Lego stock and sold them to black-market dealers who would then vend the stolen bricks at “seemingly legitimate businesses, swap meets, or online.” Police say they were booked on “charges related to Organized Retail Theft, Grand Theft, and Conspiracy to commit a crime.”

The CHP posted images of the bust on Instagram. Stolen sets included the $85 921-piece Millennium Falcon (as opposed to the 7,000-plus piece, $800 behemoth from 2017 ), the $500 6,167-piece Lord of the Rings Rivendell set , the $400 Lion Knights’ Castle , and a $170 1,458-piece Porsche 911 set.

Like any other collectible, Lego sets are prime targets. In 2021, French police announced they were investigating an international Lego crime ring . That same year, authorities in Seattle arrested a shop owner accused of selling stolen Lego sets following a clumsily named “Operation: MandalOrganized Retail Theft” investigation, as NBC News reported .
