Sarah + Alex’s Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron Wedding

Allow me to introduce a wedding that was perhaps one of the most enjoyable of 2016: this is the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron wedding of Sarah and Alex. There is perhaps no other more esteemed wedding occasion in Sydney than a wedding reception held at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron . This wedding oozed class! Well… OK, maybe if Sarah and Alex were married at Kirribilli House , then THAT would be the most prestigious, but I don’t think that you can simply “hire” Kirribilli House for a night. And although the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron is literally next door to Kirribilli House, I don’t recommend jumping the fence.

Sarah and Alex’s Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron wedding was really quite stunning. The venue is located on the waterfront in Kirribilli and has amazing Sydney Harbour and CBD views. The club has a large working jetty that stretches about 100 metres around the clubhouse and forms a “pond” for member yachts to moor.

I enjoy working with couples just like Sarah and Alex – super chilled and heaps of fun! Sarah and Alex were awesome clients – my organic, candid, photojournalistic approach to weddings worked really well on their wedding day. We didn’t fuss over some silly details or try to get some look from a magazine. We just walked and talked, and had a great time on the water’s edge.

Sarah and Alex’s Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron wedding was actually really relaxing to photograph. The couple decided to buck the trend a little and do a ‘first look’. Not sure what a ‘first look’ is? This blog post explains it . They are local to the area, and everything was contained within the grounds of the Yacht Squadron, so not only was travelling on the day minimised, their schedule was ideal. They had an evening ceremony held on the lawns overlooking the water, champagne and canapés whilst listening to brass tunes by the Low Down Riders , and then straight into a beautiful reception prepared by the wonderful staff at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.

Christine & Susan’s Modern Rooftop Wedding At Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron

royal yacht squadron wedding

Describing their wedding as “casual, Springtime, a little windy, a culmination and celebration of our journey with our favourite people and cultures coming together” is all you need to know about the stunning rooftop day of Christine and Susan. Captured by Clarisse Photography, this was a day that embodied the best of waterside Melbourne , classic city style and all the love in the world. There is a windswept rooftop ceremony, family and friends involved in every single step of the day, and a celebration of it all.

It seems that these two were always meant to be, the duo sharing of how they met. “We met at a girl bar, introduced by mutual friends. There was an instant attraction and we later discovered that we went to the same high school (five years apart).”

royal yacht squadron wedding

The couple chose Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, St Kilda for their wedding, They tell “We had the ceremony on the rooftop, which was a bit touch and go with the wind, but it made for fantastic dramatic photos. The moody clouds and sunset of Port Phillips Bay at dusk provided the perfect backdrop. The reception was downstairs in the Ballroom. Harbour Room was the one and only venue we looked at, something about it just felt right from the get-go.”

royal yacht squadron wedding

Susan and Christine both walked down the aisle to “I Choose You” by Sara Barallies performed live by their friend Miss Dee . They explain “After the ceremony, Miss Dee played some of our favourite acoustic songs. Then by dark, she turned into the DJ to rock the rest of the night on the dancefloor.”

royal yacht squadron wedding

Every moment was filled with love, right down to the wedding rings made by the couple’s friend Rowena Silk . Christine and Susan sharing  “They were rose gold with a wave curve and engravings on the inside. There was something really special about having our friend design these rings and bring them up to us in the ceremony.”

royal yacht squadron wedding

Christine and Susan both enlisted a stylist from Your Look to help them pull together their wedding day looks. They tell “Being lesbians we were a bit clueless in shopping for our wedding outfit. Also, we were in our first year as parents and had little time and sleep. Suze employed the help of a stylist (Tanya Ganas from Your Look). Tanya did such a great job in nailing the brief, Suze decided to buy a voucher for Chris. The outfits were kept a secret from each other, but Tanya knew the exact compliment.”

royal yacht squadron wedding

Christine and Susan made sure one very special guest was present. “We wanted our son Louis and his Donor Daddy Max to be included in the ceremony. Being able to share this day with our baby was an incredibly enriching experience. Max and his partner Mattie, came from New Zealand to share our special moment.”

royal yacht squadron wedding

Christine and Susan loved their chosen photographer Mark.  “Mark was referred to us from a friend. He has such an easy-going personable nature. It felt so relaxed and familiar meeting him at our local for a beer to discuss our wishes and then again to review the shots.”

royal yacht squadron wedding

The wedding was catered by food&desire . Christina and Susan noting “The venue package came with a tasting night at Food & Desire’s venue Aerial. The night was shared with other couples preparing for their weddings and was a highlight we got to experience with our bridesmaids and Suze’s parents. The food was delicious and we got a bit carried away tasting the premium wines “behind the veil”.”

royal yacht squadron wedding

Nina’s Fresh Flowers styled the bright floral details for the day. “We saved our budget with the flowers. Suze’s mum had a good eye for the flower arrangement. In line with the colour theme, we chose coral and white roses. The table flowers were in round glass vases which we could easily give to guests to take home. The bridesmaid’s flowers were simple white roses chosen by Jodie.”

royal yacht squadron wedding

And as the sunset, the newlyweds dined with their guests and danced the night away, making their dance floor debut to Aretha Franklin’s “Say A Little Prayer”, a moment they shared with their favourites. “We thought this was a good opportunity for our gay friends who are not usually the limelight couple at weddings to share the moment with us. We gave them the verse cue to flood the dancefloor and join us in our first dance. When the moment came all the guests took to the floor which we loved anyway.”

A big congratulations to you both Christine and Susan! Thank you for sharing your story with us. Thanks also to Clarisse Photography for today’s wedding!

The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron Wedding of Nick and Jess

Sunset wedding photography Sydney Harbour

“Love is our true destiny. We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves alone – we find it with another.” Thomas Merton. A wedding is the greatest of celebrations. It’s the last words of a book, “…After all that had brought them to this time and place… (it goes something like this doesn’t it!?) …they stood smiling at each other and as the celebrant gave permission, they kissed, and were married.” Today we’re celebrating the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron Wedding of Nick and Jess

It’s the start of an incredible life adventure, an acknowledgement of two souls meaningfully intertwined, perhaps more basically, it’s celebrating two people who can’t bear to be apart.

It’s celebrated for the simplicity of what’s been found. Because it’s the most real, most fanciful, most desirable, most illogical thing we ever do see – two people in love.

It’s an intimate, joyous, raucous and happy day. And how glad we are to be able to document these moments.

Nick doesn’t live at home with his parents but it set such a sweet note of change that Nick went back home to get ready for the wedding day.

It also made a change that one of Nick’s groomsmen grabbed one of two MJ Bale suits from home – but not the right one. In this case it was an unmatched pants and jacket. It was similar enough to create the confusion, different enough to be noticed. So realising his mistake just before I arrived he very, very quickly rushed home and grabbed the actual wedding day suit, while Nick and his remaining groomsmen and grooms-lady (Nick’s sister) laughed continuously and repeatedly from that point. Mistakes do set a good mood.

Nick’s parents have a Dachshund who joined in the festivities of the day by wearing his collar and tie throughout the preparations too – and may have been on standby for the bridal party…

Helping the groom get ready for his wedding

Jess and her bridesmaids, which included her two sisters, were getting ready at a friends apartment. It just so happens to have that consequential Sydney Harbour view that everyone wishes they could wake up to. Those views include the Opera House, ferry terminals, Harbour Bridge and, of course, the occasional firework night or two.

The hair and make-up had been done by friends, beautifully, and all the ladies were enjoying the benefits of being together, enjoying the view, and sharing champagne. All very relaxed, casual and sublime – with a hint of excitement too. It seemed a shame to leave the apartment but there was a ceremony to get to in an equally amazing part of Kirribilli.

Family friends had lent their cars, tied the ribbons and loaded the bridesmaids and Jess and her father onboard and delivered them round the corner to her Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron wedding.

The view from where the girls got ready

There’s a lovely short walk down through the garden and down the aisle to stand next to each other, to make vows, exchange rings and make that first (and second) kiss in front of their family and friends.

Petals were thrown, hugs given, families embraced and a new story began.

Bride about to walk down the aisle

After family photographs and a few minutes with their bridal party Nick and Jess stole some quiet moments together, with the city and harbour as backdrop.

The reception got underway a little later. (If you’re near youtube watch “I believe in a thing called love” by The Darkness) Jess arranged for a friend to sing a couple of songs for Nick. He was sensational, very much reminiscent of Justin Hawkins incredible voice, and that brought out the cheers and applause.

The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron wedding team catered a fantastic buffet, lots of fresh seafood, plenty of choices for diets of all kinds, and an appealing choice of desserts.

Nick and Jess chose a three piece band, Red Soda Band , to provide the entertainment, one of their friends to MC, plenty of great speeches to reveal more about each other, a little dancing before closing out the evening with a very quick sparkler exit.

Recommendations

Met all our needs for Reception and dinner. Food was great and portions fair. Stephanie our server was great. Met all my requirements. Very beautiful venue.

Marriann Creelman and her staff were fantastic. From early planning stages to wedding day, we enjoyed a very professional, experienced and knowledgeable team, Marriann, in particular, who guided a young bride and groom and made all the planning very effortless on our part. The venue was spotless, the floors freshly waxed and the staff were so accommodating. We were given carte blanche in terms of decoration, but the simple touches such as the baby grand piano make this such a classic setting. The water views, the lovely grounds and expert wait team just made for a wonderful experience. Our guests made comment on the beautiful surroundings and were very impressed with the meal, it was delivered quickly, was very well prepared and presented, the salads cold, the main course piping hot. As the parents of the bride and having attended many ceremonies over the years, I must commend the staff and encourage anyone looking for an intimate waterside wedding (we sat 105+-) to strongly consider the Saraquay House, youwill be delighted.

Vintage elegance with beach-side vibes

Founded more than 140 years ago, the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron is one of the oldest yacht clubs in Victoria. The current clubhouse was opened in 1926 and is a stunning vintage landmark in St Kilda’s history.

In 1956 the club was involved in the Melbourne Olympics, becoming the executive headquarters for the sailing competitions. Victory ceremonies and medal presentations took place on the lawns surrounding the clubhouse.

A multi-million dollar investment prior to 2014 has led the club and squadron to what it is today. The Harbour Room itself is a bright and modern function space upstairs in the stunning vintage building. With American oak floorboards, an onyx marble bar, and a fireplace, it’s the perfect combination of elegance and modernity within the iconic original character of the building. There’s even a bridal room downstairs to make the most of those precious moments on your own.

The rooftop on the third level is also a major feature, offering panoramic sweeping views all the way from the CBD down the bay. Faux grass, festoon lighting and original building features will make the perfect blank canvas for stunning wedding photos against a Melbourne sunset.

The Harbour Room

A reception inside the Harbour Room will give you memories you won’t soon forget. The room is furnished with neutral details, making it the perfect blank canvas to style your day. Classic, luxury, elegant and vintage weddings will all look fabulous inside this space.

The room itself is split into two function areas for you and your guests. By the bar, couches, ottomans, white coffee tables, high bars and outdoor furniture can be used to make this area a hub of conversation. The oak dance floor will also make the perfect location for new friendships to form.

This area also has access to a balcony and can be curtained off for a stunning indoor ceremony. It’s the perfect ceremony option if you’re getting married in winter, or just need a wet weather plan.

The room then opens into the main reception dining area which can be styled to your wedding taste. Abundant green hanging installations paired with white tables, chairs and linens will look fabulous for a meal in this room. Add a splash of metallic gold to give your decor even more elegance.

A Beautiful Wedding on the Ocean at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron …with Emily and Keith

Emily and Keith chose the beautiful waterfront wedding venue known as Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, Saraguay House for their wedding with an outdoor ceremony by the ocean. It was a beautiful, very warm, sunny day. Emily was going for a “classic rustic romantic” theme with a pop of bold colour. Emily and Keith had actually chosen a different venue in the beginning of their wedding planning. That venue unfortunately got badly damaged in hurricane Fiona and eventually went out of business. They scrambled to find another venue with a similar date available that offered an ocean backdrop. Saraguay to the rescue and it turned out wonderfully and perhaps for the best. Emily loves colour. She fell in love with a burnt orange and deep purple combination since seeing flowers at the botanical gardens in Victoria in her early 20’s. Keith was along for the ride:).

The Love Story

Like all classic millennial relationships, Emily and Keith met online. Tinder to be exact. Emily had just moved to Nova Scotia to start her graduate studies and Keith was starting his career. They were both quite busy people. Their love story began with texting back and forth for over a month. Then their first date happened, a moose heads game (Emily’s idea not Keith’s). Keith got to know how intense Emily could yell at the ref. Emily got to know how easygoing and funny Keith was and how passionate he was about his job.

They dated that first year and bonded over their love of food, garlic, and wine. They both shared many dates in the boardroom cafe and on hiking adventures. Emily and Keith grew to really enjoy each other’s company and realized that they communicated really well and had so much laughter. They grew to love each other. So much so they made it through 3 years of long distance, over five moves, and buying a house during the pandemic. They made it out stronger than ever 🙂

The Wedding Prep Photos

Emily chose a beautiful Airbnb right on the ocean in Halifax Nova Scotia to get ready for her big day with her bridesmaids and closest of family and friends.

Their Wedding Ceremony

It was so hard to pick just one favorite moment for both Emily and Keith – the entire day was amazing for them with so many highlights. The ceremony was super special! Emily was nervous until Keith winked at her as she walked down the aisle.

The arch and the flowers, with the ocean background were a perfect backdrop. The officiants were Keith’s cousins and god-parents, having them officiate the ceremony meant so much to both Emily and Keith.

The Wedding Party Photos

The best thing about Saraguay House, it’s truly an all in one location. You do not have to leave to get amazing wedding photos unless you want to. From the ocean backdrop, to the forest, the gazebo and the urban style building there is no shortage of great backdrops for wedding photos.

The Wedding Reception Photos

Emily and Keith loved the speeches! Everyone “crushed it” and Keith’s best man and brother stole the show with his harry potter references.

The cake was amazing and made specially for them by Keith’s mom Cathy. She really took Emily’s love of minions to the max. Emily requested a little minion fun. Emily introduced Keith to the world of minions and ever since then he calls her his “little minion”.

Advise for the Newly Engaged

First – congrats! Enjoy being newly engaged. Take the time to be fiances to each other before jumping into planning right away.

Once you are ready to plan. Talk to each other about what you want in the day and discussed your priorities. Make sure you are comfortable with a budget and start to plan out the big things first – number of people and venue.

Near the end and after all the planning and in our case re-planning, try not to sweat the small stuff or details. Things can and will go wrong. Don’t over complicate your decisions. Get advice from others but trust your gut. We also had people ask to come last minute and everything turned out, and in the end we are glad those people came, but it is also okay to set limits.
