More information.

Whether you’re a first timer or a seasoned sailor, Captain Tom Schroeder of Bella Sailing Cruses welcomes visitors of all ages aboard Scuppers, a meticulously maintained, traditional mono-hull sailboat. With the beauty of the wind, you’ll set sail in harmony with the day’s prevailing weather and wave conditions for a relaxing and picturesque journey through Eagle Harbor.

Preparing for the sail and arrival

Bring plenty of sunscreen and your favorite refreshments. Even on a warm day, bring a windbreaker or sweater, as it’s always cooler on the water.

Upon arrival, park at South Shore Pier or the nearby Village Hall. Check in at the South Shore Pier stand 15 minutes prior to departure. Then, wait for your captain at the Bella Sailing Cruises sign. If you’re early, you’ll spot Scuppers returning from the previous charter!

Here’s what you’ll experience

Eagle Harbor: Scuppers sets sail from the South Shore Pier in the heart of historic downtown Ephraim. Enchanting and pristine Eagle Harbor hugs the charming Ephraim shoreline. With Ephraim as its backdrop, this well-protected bay is a place for swimming, windsurfing, sunset watching and other Door Peninsula activities.

Ephraim: Celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2003, Ephraim is one of the Peninsula’s oldest and most charming settlements. It encapsulates the essence of what the first settlers encountered when they arrived from the east to a coastline reminiscent of Scandinavian vistas.

From the water, you’ll delight in the beautiful historic Ephraim skyline, punctuated with vintage clapboard buildings, majestic steeples and mature hardwood trees.

Hear the Moravian Church bell toll a musical hymn, resonating off the surrounding bluffs. Recall what life was like when travel meant relying on a sailing vessel, the wind and the skill of a seasoned captain.

Wildlife: Bella passengers will observe many water birds from soaring seagulls to splashing terns and cormorants. You may enjoy a rare glimpse of a white pelican, eagle or loon. For best viewing, bring your binoculars.

Peninsula State Park: You’ll sail alongside Peninsula State Park, Wisconsin’s second oldest state park and the largest park on the Peninsula. Its 3,776 pristine acres include miles of hiking, biking and cross country skiing trails. The park’s majestic bluffs, including Eagle Bluff, reach 180 feet high. Vacationers enjoy the park’s campsites along the water and in the woods and golfing on the park’s championship 18-hole course.

You’ll pass nearby Nicolet Bay, named for Jean Nicolet, the first white man to visit Wisconsin. This is Peninsula Park’s beach area, and you may see campers enjoying canoes, kayaks or small watercraft.

Niagara Escarpment: On your Bella Sailing Cruise, you’ll have a unique view of intricate cave formations in the scenic Niagara Escarpment--a bedrock ridge made of dolomite rock running for 650 miles from New York through the Door Peninsula and into southeastern Wisconsin.

Horseshoe Island: Weather permitting, you’ll sail within view of this 39 acre island, about two miles from Nicolet Bay. This uninhabited state-owned island was formerly called Eagle Island, but renamed for its unique horseshoe shape.

Meet Your Captain

From the moment you meet Captain Schroeder, you’ll feel right at ease and know that your safety is his first concern. Tom prides himself on return passengers, many of whom have reserved their annual sailboat ride since 1993. Enjoy the camaraderie knowing that you’re in the hands of an experienced sailor.

The captain’s love of sailing emerged when he was a little boy, admiring a painting of a sailboat in the family room. The boat and the way it appeared to move with the power of the wind mesmerized Tom.

A sailboat from his grandfather became Tom’s favorite toy in the backyard pool. Later, Tom’s dream took shape as he watched the television series, "Adventures in Paradise," which aired 1959 through 1962.

"Yes, this is my dream come true, the one guy and a boat ’Adventures in Paradise ideal," Captain Schroeder says.

Captain Schroeder came to the Door Peninsula from Villa Park, Ill., in the late 1960s. He embellished his college education in history, education and political science by learning to sail and earning his captain’s license.

After working for a catamaran business for seven years, Captain Schroeder chose to follow his dream and bought Bella Sailing Cruises in 1999.

And when he’s not sailing, he is working on his farm or reading about sailing. One of Captain Schroeder’s favorite quotes on sailing comes from fellow sailor, Herb Payson:

"Sailing does this for me! The world leaps into my eyes and ears, touches me, and afterward I return to the mainstream of my life renewed."

Come Aboard Scuppers

You’ll sail on Scuppers, a sailboat named by a child inspired by the children’s book, "The Sailor Dog." Here’s more about this meticulously maintained sailboat, crafted by the Chicago Sea Scouts in 1960:

  • Main sail reaches 34 feet high
  • Constructed from fiberglass with warm pine, mahogany and brass trim

Frequently Asked Questions

Captain Schroeder welcomes questions from passengers. Here are some of the most common inquiries:

What is the wind like on the bay?

The prevailing winds are southwest at 10 to 15 knots. But the direction can vary as the weather changes. Captain Schroeder loves sailing here and has ample experience in various conditions.

How deep is the water?

On your sail, the water depth will vary to 175 feet at the deepest point.

How safe is it?

Captain Schroeder prides himself on putting your safety above all else. Safety gear on board the boat exceeds all Coast Guard regulations. The sailboat, equipment and safety devices pass annual Coast Guard inspections. Life jackets or personal flotation devices (PFDs) are always available, and the choice to wear one is up to each adult passenger. Most adults choose not to don them due to the stable nature of the sail, and the PFDs are always within reach.

However, the Captain does require all children wear a PFD at all times in accordance with Coast Guard guidelines with the exception of infants who are hand-held by adults. Please discuss your family’s situation or questions with Captain Schroeder. All sizes of PFDs, from infant through adult, are on board.

An avid swimmer, Captain Schroeder maintains current certification as a Life Guard and is a certified swimming instructor through the YMCA, where he teaches youth and preschool swimming lessons during the off season.

Can I swim during the sail?

Swimming is not permitted from the sailboat at any time. Even the strongest swimmer would be unable to keep up with the boat while under sail, potentially causing danger to the swimmer and others on board.

Additionally, off shore water temperatures are known to cause hypothermia, a life-threatening condition. So, enjoy your swimming instead at one of the Peninsula’s beaches.

What about bad weather?

Captain Schroeder studies the weather and wind reports as he makes decisions about each day’s sails. In threatening weather, Scuppers will not set sail.

Have you ever married anyone?

Captain Schroeder can officiate a marriage, but he hasn’t yet. Couples have become engaged during a sail on Scuppers. Others celebrate anniversaries. A passenger once spread the ashes of a loved one.

With the Power of the Wind

We’re proud to earn this publicity in the "Door County Advocate’s" "This Week" section.

Tom Schroeder shares his lifelong love of sailing with passengers aboard his boat, Scuppers.

By Donna Marie, Door County Advocate, June 2002

Tom Schroeder’s dream has come true. As a kid, he sat in his family’s living room, admiring a painting of a ailboat, not just the boat, but how it appeared to move with the power of the wind. His grandfather nurtured the interest by buying a toy sailboat that Schroeder played with in the backyard pool. Later his dream took shape as he watched the television series, "Adventures in Paradise", which aired 1959-1962.

"Yes, this is my dream come true, the one guy and a boat ’Adventures in Paradise’ ideal. But I’m always looking for a bigger boat," Schroeder said with a laugh.

Schroeder is the owner of Bella Sailing Cruises in Ephraim. He is also the captain, delighting passengers with his knowledge of Door Peninsula history and sence of humor while impressing them with his sailing skills. Schroeder is beginning his fourth season with Bella, a company that was named by its first owner who was stationed in Italy. Bella means beautiful in Italian, and the sights one sees while sailing along the Door Peninsula are truly that.

Originally from Villa Park, Ill., Schroeder came to the Door Peninsula in the late 1960’s, seeking a simple life and a "back-to-the-land" ideal. In 1975, he purchased a 20-acre farm in Gibraltar and has been there ever since. He embellished his college education in history, education and political science by learning to sail and earning his captain’s license.

Schroeder worked for a catamaran business for seven years before deciding to buy his own business in 1999 and follow his dream.

The Sailboat

Schroeder said one of the attractions to purchasing Bella was the sailboat Scuppers, which was handmade by the Chicago Boy Scouts in 1960 from fiberglass with warm pine and mahogany trim. Scuppers was actually named by the daughter of another Bella owner, who was inspired by the children’s book "The Sailor Dog."

The sailboat is 26 feet long with a main sail that reaches 34 feet high. It accommodates six passengers and travels at 7 knots, - about 8 1/2 miles per hour. Schroeder said a great deal of preparation is done each season to get Scuppers ready to sail and earn local Coast Guard certification.

"I totally repaint and revarnish Scuppers every year. I’m handy," said Schroeder, who is a farmer and carpenter during the off-season. "Then Scuppers goes into the water to ensure all systems are working."

Sailing in Door

During four two-hour trips each day on Green Bay, Schroeder points out key sites and tells relevant Door Peninsula history stories. Scuppers sets sail from Eagle Harbor with the pretty Ephraim white skyline in view. Historical records show that since the 1850’s, when the early Moravians settled in the village, an unwritten law requires that buildings in Ephraim be painted white or be left unpainted.

The sail continues alongside Peninsula Park’s scenic shore. Peninsula is the second oldest state park in Wisconsin, and the largest on the Door Peninsula with 3,776 acres, Schroeder tells passengers. He goes on to describe the park’s 180-foot high Eagle Bluff and points out the silhouette of an Indian in the cliffs.

A sail on Scuppers passes through Nicolet Bay, named for Jean Nicolet, the first white man to visit the state of Wisconsin.

"He came to shore there and fired gun, impressing the Indians," Schroeder points out.

Weather permitting, Schroeder likes to sail Scuppers out to Horseshoe Bay Island, about two miles from Nicolet Bay.

"Whenever I can, I try to get out of the harbor, even if we have to motor out, and get out to Horseshoe Island. It makes the sail a lot more pleasurable."

Horseshoe Island is a 38-acre island once called Eagle Island but renamed because of its shape. A trip to Horseshoe requires the right weather conditions as swells can develop once the boat hits open water beyond Nicolet Bay.

And what about the winds of Green Bay? Schroeder said that is a common question from passengers and one he answers with enthusiasm.

"There is no general wind. The prevailing winds are southwest at 10 to 15 knots. But the weather changes constantly. And the wind can come from another direction. Green Bay and Long Island Sound are the two best places in the entire nation to sail," he said.

Another question he often gets from the passengers is, "What is the depth of the water?"

"I have fun with them on this one, telling them it’s deep enough; truly, it never gets over 175 feet in its deepest point."

Schroeder said that although the goal is to have fun and keep the sail interesting, the top priority is safety. Life jackets and flares are available, and the captain ensures Scuppers passes Coast Guard inspections. Schroeder practices good sailing skills, which he described as weather knowledge, physical skills as well as natural instinct.

"The ability to anticipate is the major thing. Being able to see what the clouds are doing, the skies are doing. See what is happening on the water. It’s also important to be honest with yourself. I cannot out-fight nature. I am not better, stronger. Let nature rule what your business is going to do. Accept it."

Schroeder said he listens to the Coast Guard radio and the wind report from Sturgeon Bay as he makes decisions about each day’s sails.

And while on each sail, he pays close attention to how his passengers - many of whom are visitors to the Door Peninsula - are reacting to the waves and the water.

"Most of the people who sail with me have never sailed in their life. I read them, watch them. If a wave comes from a direction that makes them uncomfortable, I’ll change the direction of the the route," he said.

EM>Schroeder easily recalled some of his more unique sails. "A guy proposed on the boat - we made sure they were the only people on that sail. I took care of obtaining wine and hors d"oeuvres - and having them on back so she thought it was going to be a normal sail. And another passenger once spread the ashes of a loved one. I haven’t married anyone yet, but I can, as a captain," he said.

Taking this sailing trip was the best part of our trip to Sister's Bay/Door County. The trip starts on time with an introduction to the boat, safety and the crew - Captain John and Mate Isabelle. This is a 2 hour cruise and a lot of information is shared about the history of the Edith Becker and the local waterways. Captain John loves what he does and it shows by how much he involves his guests with the sail. We were offered the chance to raise the sails and even take pictures at the wheel. This was an excellent trip and great value.

We had a lovely 2 hour sail on the Edith Becker today. The crew (Capt John and Isabella) was top notch - friendly, informative and highly skilled. They made our lovely cruise of Lake Michigan even lovelier, and were welcoming and accommodating to my dog as well. Highly recommended!

The Sale Door County harbor cruise was a unique experience on a tall boat. Expert crew. Beautiful weather. Enjoyed even with a 12 knot wind and gentle role.

What a wonderful experience! My boyfriend and I went on a sunset cruise on the Passage North with Captain Todd and had an incredible time. Captain Todd was awesome: friendly and knowledgeable, and willing to teach. We also had an amazing sunset to top it all off!

We did the sunset sailboat cruise and it was AWESOME! It didn't hurt that we had perfect weather. But what really made it perfect was our captain Clayton and his first mate Harry. They were fantastic. Clayton is an expert skipper. His nautical knowledge made us all comfortable. Plus he is hilarious. Harry was amazing also. Did the work of many men! Both were excellent and very entertaining. I recommend this trip with 5 stars! Thank you Clayton and Harry.

The scenery is gorgeous. The sunset was perfect. Captain John of the Edith Becker made what could have been a lovely evening a huge disappointment with his surly attitude and half-baked "sailing". The sailboat is fine. Not exactly well-appointed for anything but sitting in place and watching the sunset. The same view can be seen from the dock - for free! We motored out a very short way off shore. Raised the sails. Bobbed in the water for a bit. Listened to Captain John's canned rendition of the boat's history (recited with lackluster enthusiasm at best, as if he was immensely bored from having repeated it one thousand times before) and then motored back to the dock as soon as Captain John could reasonably call the excursion "done". While waiting for the sun to lower sufficiently so that he could turn back towards shore, Captain John bitterly complained about living in the Caribbean ("Amazon doesn't have one day Prime delivery service") and the "lack of food options" in the islands. He also complained about his current work schedule (7 days in a row, oh my!) Is this appropriate for this sunset sail? The only time Captain John perked up was when we were approaching the dock and he, very clearly, made his request for TIPS heard by one & all. His first mate, Isabella, was lovely though. She deserves a new Captain.

This was one of the best parts of our trip! Captain John was amazing and super funny! He was really good at telling us what landmarks we were near and all about sailing! We were able to bring our snacks and drinks aboard which was nice. 10/10 would sail again.

I deal with chronic pain and have somewhat limited mobility--so, going out on a sailboat was a great way for me to be active in a way, and really get in nature. The crew were so helpful, reassuring, and funny. I even requested some music and they put it on the bluetooth speaker just for me. It was our honeymoon, and we ended up sitting to two folks also celebrating! We'd gotten married on the same day, it turned out. We met because the first mate invited volunteers to raise the mast/sail...i don't know all the terminology, but she made it easy! she just said PULL! :) Such a great time, and the sunset on the water was of course beautiful. I highly recommend the sunset sail trip, and it did get bumpy but I'm an anxious person with body pain and I was really fine and delighted the whole time so I think it's fun for everyone.

We can't say enough about the Sail Door County crew and our two trips on the Edith Becker! We were up in June and did a Saturday afternoon cruise with Kristy, Kevin, and Kate - we had the BEST time! We even had an acoustic singer aboard which made for such a great atmosphere. We sailed around Sister Bay and enjoyed the gorgeous weather while chatting with the other passengers and the crew. Everyone is so fun and personable and we genuinely enjoyed getting to know them. This time, we did the Saturday morning lighthouse tour, which involves sailing and motoring to a lighthouse further south on the peninsula so we really got out into open water. We traded Kevin for Will, who provided a really entertaining look into the ship's history. Kate did a great job talking about all the islands in Green Bay and Kristy shared the history of the lighthouse. We caught some great wind and had an amazing sail! Did we mention it's BYO and the boat is so spacious and comfortable? We will absolutely be on board the next time we're in Door County! Thanks so much to our amazing crew for showing us such a wonderful time!

Your Sailboat Is Waiting for You

SailTime Door County is a sailboat membership program and sailing school at Wave Pointe Marina & Resort, Little Sturgeon Bay. Northeast Wisconsin-native Bill Wons captains the  Alissa Joy , a 2018 luxurious 35-foot Beneteau Oceanis sailboat and the  Leah Helen , a 2021 38-foot Jeanneau Sun Odyssey. Incorporating the latest, most innovative technology, the premier yachts offer speed, stability and good seakeeping.  With an impressive galley, AC, heat, dehumidifier, and plenty of headroom, the yachts are comfortable and spacious. The Jeanneau even has 3 cabins! The sailboats are ready to skipper for the experienced sailor visiting Door County for a memorable Wisconsin vacation.

Sailboat Share Membership Program

Opened in 2001, SailTime is the world’s leading boat share program. The innovative sailboat membership program provides the freedom of regular, flexible time on the water. Members enjoy the benefits of new boat ownership without the high cost of owning a sailboat themselves. They spend their time sailing, not repairing and maintaining a sailboat. There are no slip fees, insurance, or storage expenses to pay. They step aboard a new sailboat and begin their cruise on Green Bay.

SailTime is an ASA Awarded Sailing School

Charter sailboat cruises.

Additionally, Captain Bill Wons is ready to lift anchor for peaceful, romantic sunset cruise charters. Champagne toasts and glowing summer sunsets await the Door County vacationer. Sailing aboard the Alissa Joy, charter guests experience the incredible views of the peninsula’s unique landscape. Day or night, sightseeing cruises reveal the natural wonders of Door County:

  • Limestone cliffs
  • Rare rock formations

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

  • BeverleyT 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat trip - TERRIBLE We got on the bus, but couldn’t buy a 1 day ticket. They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019
  • IrishCueTravel 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles SLO Motion Not all their fault , but if you plan on trying this Attraction be patient! Traffic is a big problem first and foremost. But to add additional unnecessary delays; the bus stops at each site for 15 minutes at a time or More ! I gave up half way through ( 45 minutes) ; and walked back to the starting point in 10 minutes! • michael g 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Worst hop on/hop off EVER Waited for 40 minutes in the cold rain for a bus that never came... unacceptable. Traffic is so bad that when on a bus the previos day it was barely moving. My advice-get a subway pass and a good travel guide book and do sightseeing on your own! Read more Written October 24, 2018
  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018
  • Monismith2014 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles it was very enjoyable it was very interesting seeing things we saw walking around from the bus. so much more to see. we had a lot better view of the attractions from the height of the bus.also the bus was reasonable slow which gave us time enough for photos. it stopped at sparrow hill for 10 minutes for picture taking Read more Written September 20, 2018
  • fati666222 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles The best way to see Moscow We did both routes but if you have little time then only do the red route. Its very informative and it takes you to the important sights. The staff on the bus are very friendly and helpful. Read more Written August 20, 2018

  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018
  • Bernardo P 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat Trips Moscow, Russia Yesterday, I booked a boat trip with the web page and was totally horrible, didn’t have audio guide as it shows on the picture-Nobody Talk-. The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. I suggest take the trip and pay on site, avoid fake internet pages, there are many other services with a lot of entertainment, don’t take this ones. Read more Written July 14, 2018
  • Kathrynowl91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good way to see some sites We usually do these tours when we travel. They get you round and you see the sight . The traffic is quite heavy so it is a bit slow but there is not a lot they can do about it. We only did the red route. Just a note people don’t queue here when the bus comes it’s a bit of a free for all. Read more Written July 13, 2018
  • Daniyal91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Was Ok.! Started our tour of moscow from here, We had got the 2 Day Pass with the boat ride. The route and the map was good but not well managed. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! The boat ride was Ok, a little crowded. No guide provided, just a boat ride with restaurant service Read more Written July 12, 2018
  • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018
