Calypso 14 is a 13 ′ 8 ″ / 4.2 m catamaran sailboat built by Calypso Sail Craft starting in 1980.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Available in ‘Standard’, ‘Racing’, and ‘Rocket’ versions. Trapeze optional. Original builder: Calypso Sail Craft 113 Connaught Street Sandgate, Queensland 4017, Australia (No longer in business)

I live in Barbados and have always gone on the very big catamarans. No more. I am a convert to this particular boat. The staff were amazing. Due to the fact that it is not one of the very large boats my friends and I did not have to deal with loads of other people on the boat. It was heaven. It felt like a private charter even though it was not. I highly recommend this boat.
Nick, Luca and Akim made our day out w Calypso cruises the highlight of our vacation. Whether swimming w the turtles, seeing the shipwrecks or just relaxing on the boat the calypso crew attends to every detail. It is pure fun from start to finish. And of course the pick up and drop off by Sean makes the day even easier. It is a much smaller group than some of the other boats running at the same time and everyone is just so friendly. It’s Barbados at its finest.

As always Nick delivers the best catamaran cruise trip on the island. This is absolutely a must-do when you visit Barbados and Nick and his team on Calypso Cruises offer a magical day. Their attentive service, fabulous food and drink and stops to swim the majestic turtles and snorkle over reefs and wrecks will give you lif time memories.

Mel Early | Oct 2018

Had the best day with Nick and James. From start to finish it was all i wished for and more. Nothing was too much trouble and the knowledge and information given to us was second to none. We were lucky there was only myself and my husband and American couple on board so it felt more like a private charter. Weve been on catamarans all over the Caribbean and parts of Europe and i have to say this made the rest look like amateurs. Loved ever second of it. Thanks Nick and James for a truely memorable day xx

ABOUT CALYPSO MAUI

The Calypso Maui is ready to take you on exciting ocean excursions. The boat launches from Ma’alaea – the most easily reached, centralized harbor on the island . You can go on the morning Molokini Snorkeling Tour , the Sunset Dinner Cruise , the seasonal Whale Watch , and – for super special occasions — the Private Charter !

This motorized catamaran is built with three decks of fun, and is a wonderful vessel for landlubbers and ocean adventurers alike. The Calypso Maui operates like a spacious, floating amusement park, and her double hulls are built for stability . When the boat is moving forward, the twin hulls cut smartly through the water, leaving most of the craft to float high above the waves, and ride on top of the sea-surface winds. This leads to a comfortable, smooth catamaran snorkeling trip in Maui for you and your group, even when island trade-winds factor in.

The views from Calypso Maui are better than any other boat for miles, because she is the only vessel on the island that has three decks .  As a bonus, you’ll find glass panels on the bottom of the boa t, too!  Two of the cabins are completely covered from the sun, but both ends are open to the sea air. The huge tinted windows along both the port and starboard sides ensure that you always have a good view of the great Pacific beyond the railings.  Year round, it’s good to keep your eyes open for  flying fish , sea turtles, dolphins, false killer whales, and other fantastic marine animals who may be up near the surface. During whale season (mid-December through mid-April), come out to see the 45-ton humpback whales! Once you’ve seen a whale, nothing else can compare.

Our fun, dynamic, and experienced crew is there for you no matter what you need, and safety is paramount. If you come out with us to Molokini Crater, the captain and crew will teach you what you need to know in order to snorkel. Crew members will explain how to use the wide dive steps, two water slides, or the “leap of faith” jump-off point to enter the water, and they will entertain you with little-known facts about the islands that you are gliding past. The crew will also have delicious food and drinks at the ready, along with local insider tips, good humor, and  Aloha .

600+ 5-STAR REVIEWS FROM GUESTS!

We had a large group with small children. The crew was very accommodating and friendly! They made sure we had a spot together on the boat and were comfortable! They had all the right equipment to make snorkeling doable for all skill levels and ages including a viewing board to allow my 2 year old niece to see the ocean bottom. The food was great! The boat was clean and spacious! The family said it was a highlight of the trip! We would definitely do it again!

Great experience! Enjoyed the large boat. The crew were awesome, friendly and professional! The food was delicious! It was two fabulous snorkeling spots!

This trip was amazing. Having a big boat was worth it. Sure there were more people. But when there was a heavy surf we barely noticed. The food for both breakfast and lunch was great!!! Also on the ride back they gave out some little ice creams too! The photographer Marley is amazing at photographing and he has both go pros and nice camera to use in the water. This was 100% worth it.

We took our kids (6 & 11) and we had a blast! The highlight was swimming with a turtle for sure. Every just seeing the cool fish was amazing. The girls loved the slides off the boat and the food was good. Definitely would do it again

An absolute must do. This is an awesome adventure for the price. You get to stop at two locations and even if you only get out and snorkel at one it is way worth it for the cost. Molokini was incredible and clear. The crew on this boat makes everything even better the captain is funny, friendly, gives clear helpful instructions to snorkel newbies like myself and they have everything they can for sea sickness. Truly an amazing time with the Calypso.

Me and my friend got to go on the dinner cruise. The captain was great, the boat was very nice, we loved the live music(Alex is very talented), the crew was good and the food and views were amazing! Thanks for an unforgettable evening aboard the Calypso!

Looking at getting back into a 4.3 catamaran .. Was the Calypso 4.4 a mainly fault free cat or like the Alpha Omega 4.4 had handling  issues?

the windrush 14 is probably a better choice as it is still in production with all parts available from the manufacturer - they even got made in the USA under licence- is faster boat too

https://www.windrushyachts.com.au/sailing-boats/windrush-14

this looks good for a lowball effort if your looking for cheap- maricat 14 offer him $500 bet he will accept https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-view-details.html?adId=1238022294

I am restoring a caper cat 14 because of the rocker in the hull, makes it a great first boat for my son

No boat is faultless, yet! 😜

Mark,, The Calypso 4.4 good little boat. no structural problem that  I have herd off. Can get parts from Lr sails Brisbane.   Bow bit short so can nose dive a bit.   Sail plan out dated for now days but you can do what ever you like now.   Rudders are push down system that lock in with a rope to hold them tight. Mast quite easy to lift no spreaders. come to the Lake weekend might be one in the boat yard for you to see.   Remember you got to move it around your self and rig it by your self to.

Windrush, Mari, Hobie. Stic to these three for availability of 2nd hand spares and advice.

The caper cat was a better boat- especially for surf/bar crossings, but that was a different boat builder/designer- not the owner of calypso rc, there is a hard point issue where resin pooled on the inside bottom of the hull when molded-no peel ply used- but they were built on contract by many different people so some where good some not so good. lr sails doesn't have all the parts required to rebuild one to full safe spec. Manders sails Greg Ellis has beaten LR sails on price for many of the soft components required to do a rebuild, I play fair, I get prices from all contenders- alloy sections from Karl Mueller at Keeley Marine was the only supplier with the small boom front x-member, side tramp frame extrusions- none of it is cheap, to restore an old boat will cost you more then you think, be close to $5k without sails/jib and mast/boom. a new windrush is like $15k? https://www.windrushyachts.com.au/sailing-boats/windrush-14

Is half price to do one up over buying a newie, but you need to have some trade skills, not be just an electrician with a can do attitude!

For me it is for mementos for my son, if looks after things I made for him with my hands, he will be able to past them down to his son.  Like a hand print on a rock.

Thanks for the comments.. Windrushs are pretty rare here in Brisvegas but there are plenty of Maricats around so thinking of going down that route once again.. I've had two before so know what to expect.and they are pretty rock solid still,  The other plus is they have an active NSW and ACT Association which still holds Nationals etc. i would like a newer style cat like the Calypso with their narrower bows but its a case of seeing whats around and what attracts me again.

madboutcats

We have two Calypso 14’s and a Calypso 16 competing in the roughly 50km Milang to Goolwa race coming up this Sunday, you can follow their results if you like, i’m a Nacra 5.8 sailor so more into big boats but I must confess I like  the Calypso. Just make sure the rudders lock down properly before you hand your money over, on any of these push down rudder boats it’s a pain in the wallet if they say the rudders need sorting out

About Calypso

‘Calypso’ is a brand new MY6, offering an unprecedented amount of living space, with a huge saloon, flybridge and decadent master suite.  With a stunning blue hull wrap, Calypso is certain to turn heads wherever she goes!

Mimicking the sea nymph’s spell, the circular shape of the logo lures the viewer, much like Calypso enthralled Odysseus onto the mythical island of Ogygia. The semicircle represents the ocean, while curvaceous strokes on the top recall the ocean’s waves. The walled-off wave shape also alludes to Calypso’s capturing of Odysseus for seven years. Just as the sea nymph Calypso provided an immortal illusion, the boat Calypso is a gateway to recharge, revitalize, and feel as one with the ocean.

The 48′ MY6 model has been fitted with sleek panoramic windows throughout the catamaran, granting spectacular 360-degree views and beautiful levels of natural light.

Featuring dynamic and sporty lines, the MY6 has semi-displacement hulls built specifically to deliver outstanding performance, fuel efficiency, and stability in all sea conditions.

There is a choice of multiple relaxation and entertaining areas onboard, including a massive flybridge with lounges and dining table to truly enjoy the cruising experience, a capacious forward cockpit with sunlounges and cabin access, a raised contemporary saloon, and a generous cockpit that opens from the galley and boasts the option of a fixed or hydraulic aft swimming platform.

Designed for extended cruising adventures, the MY6 has a remarkable galley complete with full-sized refrigerator and freezer, stunning fittings and unprecedented amounts of storage.   Felix Felicis is also fitted with a watermaker to ensure you never have to worry about running out of water during charter.

The catamaran has a revolutionary accommodation design with an expansive luxury master suite that affords beautiful views from its panoramic windows, and features a sea-facing island queen bed, ambient lighting, and a en-suite with huge walk-in shower.

Friends can relax in designer comfort in the guest cabins, choosing from the VIP cabin or a double cabin set to starboard.  The VIP cabin has an en-suite head and the third guest cabin has a beautiful head next door, with separate shower that can also serve as a day head.  There is also a fourth, smaller double cabin interior forward that can be utilized as a guest or crew cabin.

The MY6 has been designed to deliver extraordinary offshore performance and outstanding fuel economy, with upgraded Volvo IPS600 engines!    With more than 500 gallons of fuel, Calypso s is ideal for long-range cruising with its 435HP IPS engines.

*A one-day on water check-out is required your first day, and is included in the charter rate*
