Benetti's 108m Giga Yacht IJE Listed for Sale with Burgess

By Freya Cottrell

With a week to go until the opening of the Monaco Yacht Show, Burgess has announced its appointment as Central Agent for the sale of the spectacular 108m giga yacht IJE. IJE is the largest yacht confirmed for the 2021 Monaco Yacht Show.

Built as the ultimate world-cruising family yacht, IJE was launched in 2019 as a custom superyacht built by Bennetti at its Livorno shipyard in the north-west of Italy. With a range of 6,500 nautical miles at cruising speed, this 108m giga yacht has true world cruising credentials with the added comfort and luxury of being designed to accommodate family.

Her timeless sculptural exterior was devised by the talented and sought after designers of RWD, the boundary pushing British yacht design studio. Her interior, designed by Benett and decorated by RWD, incorporates a relaxed beach-house style to add to the family ambience of the giga yacht.

At 108m, IJE is the longest yacht ever to be delivered from the Italian shipbuilders and thus it is unsurprising that Benetti has dedicated her the flagship of its enviable custom built fleet.

IJE was delivered in 2019 to a very experienced yacht owner, and this is the first time she has been on the market since her delivery. Her key features include: accommodation for 22 guests across eleven cabins and a private owner’s deck. Full height sliding glass walls in both the main deck and bridge deck saloons so as to connect guests to their ocean surroundings and magnify the beach-house interior theme. Plus a generous onboard swimming pool, dedicated gym, cinema and nightclub.

IJE will be in attendance at the Monaco Yacht Show 2021. Serious clients in the market for a yacht of this calibre can contact Burgess to pre-book a viewing.

"Burgess is delighted to announce its appointment as Central Agent for the sale of the magnificent 108m IJE [...] As the longest yacht ever delivered by Benetti she is the flagship of their enviable custom built fleet" Burgess

Benetti delivers 107m M/Y 'LANA'

'lana' is one of three benetti giga-yacht constructions….

Image for article Benetti delivers 107m M/Y 'LANA'

Following her official delivery last week, Benetti is now boarding M/Y ‘LANA’s final buyer’s supplies for her departure. LANA is one of three Benetti giga-yacht constructions – a program which is the result of significant investment that the shipyard has made over time both in terms of technical resources and investments,  upgrading infrastructure and the construction processes.

LANA was kept at the yard during the winter season following the client’s desire to add, among others features, two Kongsberg wing stations, which are state of the art in terms of complexity and innovation, according to the yard.

“I am absolutely satisfied with the work done by Benetti and Imperial together. LANA represents a statement of building excellence, every technical feature, every aesthetic element, every single detail was executed to perfection. I am glad we all made her this way to prove a new level of the Italian shipbuilding industry,” commented the vessels owner.

LANA was designed entirely by Benetti’s in-house teams, and the naval architecture is by Pier Luigi Ausonio Naval Architecture (P.L.A.N.A). She is powered by twin diesel-electric engines of 2,800 kW each, has a top speed of 18.5 knots, and a range of 5,500 nm at 12 knots. She can accommodate up to 12 guests across eight cabins, including 7 VIP rooms on the main deck, and is tended by 34 crewmembers.

The testing and commissioning of LANA’s complex equipment was carried out in Livorno by Benetti technicians under the remote supervision and direction of the equipment’s manufacturers, respectively based in England, Norway and Sweden. In the current difficult circumstances, a remote approach had to be adopted, even on technical aspects of the vessel, but this proved to be a true test of a new way of working.

According to data provided by The Superyacht Agency , Benetti continues to predominantly build vessels between the 45m - 55m mark but has seen an increasing average LOA year on year since 2017. The giga-yacht market is certainly one that is less saturated than the 50m market, and is clearly one that Benetti is keen to continue to explore.

giga yacht owner

LANA , one of three 100m+ Benetti giga-yachts, has been described as “a testament to Benetti’s commitment to championing a new era of large yacht building in Italy” by a representative from the yard, who continued to state that she is the resounding success of the yard’s very first ‘giga-season’.

“We are proud to have delivered another giga-yacht in our giga-season,” commented Paolo Vitelli, President - Benetti. “ LANA is an example of excellence: outstanding quality, unique style, and an icon of Made in Italy. A particular thanks to the owner who trusted Benetti for this creation. We are happy to have met all his expectations,” Vitelli concluded.

“Being linked to the second 100m+ superyacht ever delivered in Italy by the private shipyard Benetti is a pride that we share with the builder. It was a pleasure to collaborate once again with their professional teams and their dynamic behaviour in a proactive atmosphere,” commented Julia Stewart, Director of Imperial Yachts . “ LANA is bold, unique, sleek and aggressive, boasting high ceilings up to 2.7m in height and mixing perfect experience at sea and unforgettable charter moments. She is now entering our Charter Central Agency fleet with a large array of destinations in her bucket list that she will explore.”

The Rise of the ‘Gigayacht’

giga yacht owner

“For the billionaire who has everything, sometimes a superyacht just isn’t enough,” reports CNN.  “Gigayachts” are the ultimate status symbol, communicating power, eminence and a seemingly limitless supply of cash. Once the rich become the super rich, it’s all about being the biggest and the best – “There’s definitely a ‘mine is bigger than yours’ syndrome in this industry and there is a desire to have the best. That’s the great thing about these yachts,” said Jonathan Beckett, CEO of Burgess Yachts, one of the world’s leading yacht brokers . Buyers of gigayachts are accustomed to surrounding themselves with the most opulent and exceptional possessions, and as owners seek bigger and better yachts, the term ‘gigayacht’ is becoming more and more prevalent. Although there is no standard definition for what qualifies a boat as a “gigayacht,” SuperYacht World editor Paul Ashton says, “A gigayacht I would say is anything that is over 220 feet (67 meters) where the majority of the yacht is customized and bespoke.”

So who currently owns the world’s most expensive yacht? CNN names Roman Abramovich’s “Eclipse,” believed to be between $540 million and $1.1 billion. However, a couple of weeks ago, we reported on “History Supreme,” the $4.8 billion precious-metal-encrusted superyacht (by Ashton’s standards) designed by Stuart Hughes. We’re assuming History Supreme wasn’t named because the buyer hasn’t been officially identified.

Inside the World of Mega Yachts — How the Super Rich Find Their Dream Boats

Why giga-yachts are the next big thing in the billionaires' playground.

The 242-foot 'Cloud 9' is priced at $95,709,000 and is also available for charter.

S uper-yachts, mega-yachts, giga-yachts — the billionaires’ play toys keep getting bigger and bigger, not to mention more costly.  Just ask Burgess Yachts head of sales director Richard Lambert. The dashing businessman, based in Monaco, made a swift visit through Houston on his way to the Miami Yacht Show  and shared his insights on the surprisingly burgeoning world of private yachting.

He noted that yacht charters already booked for the coming year, exceed 2018 bookings by 20 percent. With a stable of 750 yachts available for charter and 35 offered for sale, Burgess, which was founded in 1975, is one of, in not the, largest company of its kind worldwide. Count 13 offices globally and 200 employees.

Lambert allows that the United States is the firm’s largest market and that Dallas and Houston are strong. In fact, chartering and sale of the Houston-owned 190-foot   Lady Sheridan is handled through Burgess.

Dramatic interior design of the 'Lady Sheridan' was executed by the owner's talented wife.

Just how do the mega rich distinguish between these hyperbolic yacht descriptions, we asked. While there are no rules for describing these floating palaces, Lambert says that, generally speaking, a super-yacht measures in at nothing less than 100 feet, while mega-yachts stretch to 250 feet and the largest private vessels afloat, or the recently-coined giga-yachts , push the limits at 300 feet and well beyond.

Among those earning the Olympian status are the 593-foot Azzam , owned by the Emir of Abu Dhabi, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s 533-foot Eclipse,  and the Sultan of Oman’s 509-foot Al Said .

Of these immense yachts, Burgess recently sold the 361-foot Jubilee , originally built for the Emir of Qatar, which had an asking price of $310 million. This beauty boasts 16 guest cabins and a crew of 45. It was the most expensive vessel in Burgess’ portfolio which has offerings for lesser yachts that begin at $5 million.

For those not interested in the pleasures of ownership but want to live large for a while, Burgess’ charters  range from $250,000 to $300,000 a week plus APA (or advance provisioning allowance) which includes fuel, food and drink, mooring and harbor fees as well as the recommended 10 percent tip.

MEGA YACHT, SUPER YACHT OR GIGA YACHT? WHAT TO CALL THE WORLD'S LARGEST YACHTS

There is no looking away when a large luxury yacht sails into view. the biggest super yachts in the world will always mesmerize and intrigue us, whether we are gazing at them from land or sea. but what to call these most expensive super yachts in the world there are no solid definitions when it comes to deciding if a boat is a super yacht, a mega yacht, or a giga yacht. or is that big boat just a yacht there is some general consensus on terminology, however, and several factors come into play when attempting to define the largest yachts in the world:.

Girl in a jacket

IN THE TIME BEFORE SUPER YACHTS

Maritime history places private yachting in existence as early as the 1600s. At that time, boats began to be used occasionally as recreational vessels, rather than just as work boats. Later, private citizens, not just royalty, eventually began to own their own boats. These were separated from functional craft and the word "yacht" came into play.

LENGTHS OF A SUPER YACHT, MEGA YACHT, AND GIGA YACHT

A boom in large yacht construction blossomed around the time of the Industrial Revolution in the United States. As this era of wealth grew for family names such as Carnegie, Rockefeller, Morgan, and Vanderbilt, so did interest in the luxuriousness of these yachts, which they often saw as an extension of their family mansions. Since these boat owners were seldom mariners themselves, they hired crew to help run these vessels. The largest of these large boats of the time were considered yachts.

Girl in a jacket

The length overall of a boat - for both powerboats and sailboats - is the first clue to how it is named in the yacht-industry nomenclature. Many maritime businesses will use the term super yacht for vessels at least 80 feet (24 meters) in length, while some consider super yachts to be a minimum of 100 feet in length (30 meters).

Many people use the terms super yacht and mega yacht interchangeably, while others believe a mega yacht starts at 200 feet (60 meters). There is also some consensus that an extremely high level of service from the onboard crew can bump a superyacht into the megayacht realm.

But as the largest of the yachts continue to grow in length, even the term mega yacht seems insufficient. Faster than the largest yacht in the world can be crowned, plans are already drawn up to exceed its length.

Should the largest, nearly 600-foot-long yacht fall into the same naming category as the 200-foot yacht? Probably not. For this reason, many more in the maritime industry will put the largest of the large luxury yachts into the giga yacht group. Similarly, the immense vessels that are still in the idea/discussion phase are called giga yacht concepts.

MEGA YACHT REGIONS

There are informal regional trends when it comes to naming the largest of the super-, mega-, and giga yachts. Although English is the primary language in much of North America and Europe, English can seem like two different languages when comparing London with New York. This is also true with yacht terminology.

Often the European yachting industry uses the term superyacht (or super yacht) while the United States more frequently uses the term megayacht (or mega yacht). As the yacht industry continues to grow, the use of super to describe a large, luxury yacht seems to be more predominant worldwide.

Girl in a jacket

SUPER YACHT LEGALESE

Another factor that helps define boats is the legal aspect as described by several maritime groups. Whether the boat in question is the smallest rowboat, dinghy, or tender, or the biggest boat in the world, international and local regulations hold a few clues.

One international governing body is the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) based in the United Kingdom. This British agency legislates and guides the maritime industry with national and international support and has been a leader in internationally recognized definitions.

According to the MCA's Large Commercial Yacht Code's definition, "Large means 24 meters and over in load line length and the Code of Practice applies to yachts which are in commercial use for sport or pleasure, do not carry cargo, and do not carry more than 12 passengers."

MEGA YACHT CREW

The presence of hired crew onboard definitely lends itself to referring to a boat as a yacht. As soon as captain, engineer, purser, deckhand, bosun, stewardess, stew, and chef are in uniform and on duty to serve the owner, the tendency is to use the term yacht in any form, whether a super yacht, a mega yacht, or a giga yacht.

So, with no "official" rules in play, you can use your own judgement and preference when calling a vessel, a boat, a yacht, a super yacht, a mega yacht, or a giga yacht.

Cristiano Mariani presents his new 110-meter GigaYacht concept based on the fusion between the world of yachting and the versatility / concreteness typical of commercial boating. The result is a boat that has the charm of a luxury yacht with the character of an Explorer and the potential of a real mini-cruise vessel also ideal for charter, the winning solution for the most experienced and demanding owners.

This means offering ample space for internal and external guests combined with great versatility of use. At the same time, the owner has an entire deck reserved for him and his family, for a total of 417 square meters of interiors, plus the external areas.

The boat has a great autonomy of navigation and its construction philosophy wants to follow the Green principles as much as possible, starting from the drive train to the use of materials. The project, in fact, already foresees the predisposition for a hybrid engine with azimuth electric motors and batteries, which can be updated with the most advanced Green technology.

The exterior design has been designed to have a great stylistic and emotional impact but, at the same time, looks to cruise / work ships with more solid and functional solutions. The interiors are designed with a rational layout with regular shapes to allow you to build linear and repetitive furniture in the environments that allow it. Clearly the interiors can be customized with all possible levels of luxury chosen by the owner.

The highlights are as follows: Floodable stern garage for a real SuperYacht. In fact, the stern can accommodate a tender up to 80 feet. The renderings show a specially designed and customized 70-foot catamaran. Other garages house several maxi tenders, water and land toys that can be landed on special landing boats which are also stored in the garage.

CMA 110 meters

From the receptive point of view, the interiors offer maximum comfort, with large lounges, dining rooms, a large open wine cellar and so on. Another strong point is the 100 m2 cinema / theater complete with dressing room and technical area behind the scenes to allow real theatrical performances to be staged. As for air transport, a large and certified heliport at the bow completes the main on-board equipment.

Pure is a 268-foot superyacht concept with a hidden, submarine helm station and three-deck glass atrium

In a bid to inspire the yacht owners of tomorrow, Feadship unveiled one of the most forward-thinking superyacht concepts at the Monaco Yacht Show. The 268-foot design Pure, conceived by Studio De Voogt, takes its name from sculpted exterior lines—including flush-tinted windows—an open-plan interior and future-proofed onboard systems that includes scrapping the conventional wheelhouse in favor of a forward-facing owner’s suite.

Eyebrows were raised as designers revealed a controversial lower-deck “Command Center,” where the captain will navigate the yacht. The traditional bridge will be replaced with radar, AIS, maps, depthsounders and cameras, supported by smart augmented-reality visualization and Feadship’s proprietary Foresight program. Replacing a traditional helm with a submarine-like setup that relies only on electronics and not line of sight is a brave choice. The layouts are found on naval vessels, but a superyacht?

“We recognize that the Command Center is a controversial proposal,” said Bram Jongepier, senior specialist at De Voogt. “But placing the bridge higher up impacts the profile. The Command Center is a viable solution and at Feadship we see this as a big, legitimate topic for discussion.”

Other key features include a three-deck elliptical glass atrium, retractable glass-bottomed Jacuzzi amidships, and a large beach club with three fold-down balconies aft and both sides.

Located half inside, half out, the atrium incorporates large slabs of glass to provide a clear line of sight across three of the five decks. Filling the interior with natural light, the vast central space means guests must look to private balconies for privacy.

“We developed this design with a mix of joy and tenacity, determined to adjust every angle until it works to perfection,” said designer Jan Schaffers. “This is an environment which is equally suitable for hosting amazing parties or displaying exciting art collections.”

But the surprises don’t stop there. Pure features a flexible “energy-hybrid” propulsion system that would see the yacht evolve over time. From diesel electric in 2024, to hydrogen in 2027, to all-methanol fuel cells in 2030, Pure is designed to respond to advancing technology, depending on which sustainable fuels become most viable.

“Pure synthesizes all the know-how gained in recent times over the types of spaces, exteriors and propulsion solutions owners are asking for,” said Schaffers. “Many of us are inherently reluctant to truly explore what our actual needs are but Pure takes a deep dive down this path.”

The most expensive thing ever sold on eBay is a $168 million ‘Giga-Yacht’

  • The yacht is over 30 times (!) more expensive than the second most expensive thing sold on eBay
  • At 405 feet from bow to stern, this is one of the largest yachts in the world
  • Among other things, Giga-Yacht comes with a swimming pool, a movie theater and even its own spa

Giga-yacht lead image

This ginormous yacht is the most expensive thing ever sold on eBay.

We tend to think of eBay as a place to sell unwanted items, so we can only assume somebody was just tired of owning this 405-foot leviathan and thought “yeah, I’ll just sell it on eBay”.

READ MORE: Man reveals eye-watering costs of maintaining his $5 million superyacht

When the (virtual) gavel dropped, the winning bid was worth $168 million.

As you can imagine, this makes this yacht the most expensive thing sold on eBay by a significant margin.

The second-most-expensive item ever sold on the site was a Gulfstream II luxury plane with space for 12 passengers, which sold for just over $5 million.

Some might say it was worth it, though.

This is because the Frank Mulder-designed Gigayacht (apparently that’s her official name, ‘Giga-Yacht’) comes with all the bells and whistles you expect from a yacht of this caliber.

The luxury yacht comes decked out with its own spa, swimming pool, gym, movie theatre, helicopter pad and then some.

Gigayacht - 405-foot superyacht

There’s a 3,000 sq. ft. master suite on the main deck, 10 multi-level suites with panoramic windows, eight guest rooms, and a children’s cabin.

It also has two large guest tenders and a ski boat stored in the garage.

A submarine can be launched via a dry dock, too.

In the yacht world, this definitely qualifies as a work of art.

Gigayacht - 405-foot superyacht

Giga-Yacht has a cruising speed of 16 knots and maximum speed of 20 knots, possible with two 4,300 kW Caterpillar engines.

Interestingly, when it was first listed on eBay, the superyacht had yet to be built and delivery was set for a future date.

Giga-Yacht

The 168-million-dollar question is, who owns the Giga-Yacht?

The identity of the bidder was never disclosed but the owner is believed to be Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Abramovich became somewhat famous after acquiring Chelsea Football Club in 2003.

The Russian billionaire has owned a number of yachts through the years.

However, like other Russian oligarchs, he’s still under sanctions so even if he truly is the owner of Giga-Yacht, we’re not sure he still has access to it.

‘The Tower’, a GRU building in Khimki, Moscow

How the GRU spy agency targets the west, from cyberspace to Salisbury

Accusations mount against the Russian army’s main intelligence directorate

In Russia’s shadow war with the west, one intelligence agency keeps making headlines.

The GRU, or main intelligence directorate, of the Russian army, has been accused of spearheading several of Russia’s most notorious operations in recent years. They include the 2014 seizure of Crimea using undercover soldiers called “little green men”, the hacking theft of emails from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton, and even the planning of a failed coup in Montenegro .

A British security source told the Guardian on Monday that the nerve agent attack on the former double agent Sergei Skripal was also ordered by the intelligence agency. The British government is poised to submit an extradition request to Moscow for two Russians suspected of carrying out the Salisbury attack that left one person dead and three injured, including Skripal and his daughter.

One of the three main Russian intelligence agencies, less has been written about the GRU (now officially called the GU, or Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces) than its sister agencies, particularly the Soviet-era KGB or its modern successor the FSB, the spy agency once headed by Vladimir Putin .

Known for operating under a wartime mentality and a willingness to take risks, experts say the culture of the GRU has been influenced by its inclusion of Spetsnaz special forces and experience in war zones, including Syria and Ukraine .

Wreckage from Malaysian airlines flight MH17.

Open source researchers have claimed that a GRU officer supervised the transport of anti-aircraft weapons to eastern Ukraine when the Malaysian jetliner flight MH17 was shot down there, killing 298 people.

“The GRU regards itself as a war-fighting instrument. Yes, it gathers conventional intelligence … but its culture is much more military,” said Mark Galeotti, an expert on Russian security issues and the country’s intelligence agencies . “Although only a minority of GRU officers are Spetsnaz, it has an impact when part of your service are commandos.”

Besides special forces, the spy agency manages more traditional intelligence-gathering operations around the world, as well as signals intelligence.

Vladimir Rezun, a GRU officer who defected to the UK in the 1970s, wrote in his history of the agency (written under the pen name Viktor Suvorov) that it was largely tasked with preventing the collapse of the Soviet Union from without, as opposed to the KGB, which had a prominent role in thwarting internal threats.

While the KGB became notorious, the GRU largely operated in obscurity. “In the people’s consciousness, everything that is dark, underground and secret is connected with the KGB but not at all with the GRU,” he wrote.

Traditionally, Galeotti noted, the GRU answered for “uncontrolled spaces”. While in the past that has meant areas like civil wars, it may also apply to zones like cyberspace now.

US special counsel Robert Mueller

Several Russian intelligence agencies were involved in hacking operations before the 2016 US presidential elections, but only the GRU was identified in an 11-count indictment released last month by the United States special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. The hack was perpetrated by staff employees of several Moscow-based units traditionally tied to signal intelligence.

The interests of Russia’s intelligence agencies regularly overlap, as have their methods. As Christopher Andrew wrote in The Mitrokhin Archive: The KGB in Europe and the West, his study of notes on KGB files smuggled out of Russia, the agency “offered its allies lethal nerve toxins and poisons which were fatal on contact with the skin for use during ‘special actions’”.

While the GRU has largely been shrouded in secrecy, there have been occasional contacts with the west.

Peter Zwack, a retired US army brigadier general, wrote about a series of meetings before the Sochi Olympics with the head of the GRU, Igor Sergun, who died unexpectedly of a heart attack in January 2016. “I found him soft-spoken, unassuming, complex, erudite and nuanced,” he said of their meetings, which largely focused on counter-terrorism efforts.

“I learned that even as Sergun relentlessly directed global intelligence operations against our interests, he — paradoxically — also viewed constant confrontation with the US and west as not in Russia’s best long-term interest,” Zwack wrote.

Those meetings ended after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

How does an NBA team build culture? For the Wizards, it starts with the last man.

giga yacht owner

In February 2020, Anthony Gill was in the middle of a game in Moscow, standing in the corner near the basket and waiting, hands in front of his chest, legs coiled, for a teammate to pass him the ball. Gill had never experienced anything like what happened next: A thought struck him, suddenly and with the same brute force as an elbow to the ribs.

“There has to be more to life than this,” he thought.

By that moment in his young life, Gill had already struck gold. A shaky start to his post-college playing days had become a lucrative pro basketball career overseas that took him and his high school sweetheart, Jenna, whom he married shortly before graduating from Virginia in 2016, to Turkey and then Russia.

They learned new cultures and had their first child as Gill made a name for himself on the court. Khimki Moscow gave him an extension in 2018 that Gill says made him one of the highest-paid players in Europe at the time.

Behind the scenes with the Wizards and all that dirty laundry

Yet Gill describes that time in his life as chasing paychecks, and a gnawing sense of dissatisfaction had begun its creep. Maybe it was the base layer of financial security and familial stability that made him want to pursue a dream just then, in that gym in Moscow. Maybe he had just had enough of waiting in the corner.

Finding fulfillment looked like this: At 28, he made a leap and became an NBA rookie, taking a pay cut to sign with the Washington Wizards in December 2020. He has since averaged just 9.8 minutes per game over three seasons but has filled an indelible role.

Gill is the Wizards’ culture guy.

He is the first player to pop up off the sideline to high-five haggard teammates during timeouts. He is the one who asks players and staff members personal questions when they least expect it, who knows his teammates’ middle names and who picks up his own trash in the locker room rather than leaving it for the equipment managers. He hates having microphones and cameras at his charity events, and when told microphones and cameras could help whatever his charitable organization is, he says, “There is no organization; it’s just me and Jenna.”

“If you’re around him or you’ve been his teammate, everybody could probably say the same thing: He is just one of the best people that you’ll ever be around,” said Brooklyn Nets guard Joe Harris, Gill’s college teammate.

“You need a balance of personalities in an NBA locker room. Sometimes there’s a veteran presence: They’ve been around the block, they’ve played for however long, they’re not too concerned with making more money. They’re there for the team; they want to help out, do their part. That’s a different person than a young guy trying to establish himself, trying to get a contract. I feel like AG, regardless of where he is in his NBA tenure, he’s the same way that he was in college. He’s just about the team. He’s about the right stuff.”

‘It’s not normal’

One of an NBA team’s most tried and true bonding tools is dinner on the road. Postgame meals on interminable road trips can foster trust and build chemistry. Letting off steam after a loss or celebrating a win with teammates is crucial for a healthy work environment in which, from October at least until April, players spend more time with their co-workers than they do their loved ones.

Gill took it upon himself to open up the practice this year. Players usually eat among themselves on trips, but the forward began making dinner reservations on the road with a handful of players and an entire department. They broke bread with the training and weight staff in Salt Lake City, with the coaching staff in Milwaukee, with the security team in Portland. At the end of every night, Gill picks up the tab himself or, more often, splits it with another player. It’s a purposeful gesture, a rare moment that inverts the typical player-first NBA model.

“We’re trending in that right direction, getting more connected with the staff,” Kristaps Porzingis said of the outings. “That’s a normal thing in Europe, where everybody is together always. On other teams I’ve seen here, it’s not like that.”

A healthy Bradley Beal is ready to ‘ride it out’ and make playoff push

Gill has always pushed back against basketball norms.

At Virginia, assistant coach Ritchie McKay — Gill’s longtime mentor who’s now the head coach at Liberty — remembers Gill as doing whatever it took to win.

“He usually makes his decisions based on his convictions, not just his opportunities,” McKay said. “He was willing to take on whatever role was necessary for the team in order to get the desired result.”

Often, the results Gill desired had to do with quality of life as an NCAA athlete. He played his freshman year at South Carolina and was one of Virginia Coach Tony Bennett’s first transfers from another Division I program when he arrived in 2012. He brought with him tricks he had learned from the Gamecocks about getting the absolute most out of NCAA rules that governed how much food a program can provide players. Harris said he got the team extra meals and other various benefits.

“This was before Shabazz Napier said he didn’t have enough to eat and the NCAA relaxed all these regulations,” McKay said.

Some of the ideas Gill had for Ronnie Wideman, Virginia’s director of basketball operations, are things the program still implements today.

“It’s not normal. There aren’t many that have come with that perspective,” Wideman said. “He was never afraid to speak his mind. He always was trying to figure out things to better the experience — and it wasn’t just for himself. Kudos to him for having a voice.”

If his purpose in Charlottesville was bettering the college athlete’s experience, his purpose in the NBA is to challenge the notion that the league is just a business. Gill knows that he could be traded in the offseason and that money governs all. But while he’s with the Wizards, he wants to throw himself into creating deep relationships.

“My main goal is to break down barriers between people. I want people to know that we can care about each other and love each other and it’s not taboo,” Gill said. “I know I can play basketball — 100 percent I give every single thing to the Washington Wizards every day. But for me, I’d rather be known as a better person than a basketball player. The basketball window is so short. But the person aspect of it, people will remember. I have a lot of life to live after this.”

Rejecting the hierarchy

The Wizards’ coaching staff started a cultural initiative of its own this year. Each player received a surprise personalized shirt made for him, and coaches revealed them at practice — one day, everyone donned a Bradley Beal St. Louis-themed tee, and Daniel Gafford’s featured one of his favorite anime characters.

Gill’s featured four pictures of himself, each with a word bubble: “I love basketball,” “My bad guys,” “You’re a great player,” and, because Gill doesn’t curse (or smoke or drink, for that matter), “Freak you!”

The North Carolinian isn’t just the Wizards’ culture guy. He’s also the nicest, most polite guy on the team, so much so that when Porzingis arrived in a trade from Dallas, he thought Gill was performing. Nope. “He’s just that super, over-the-top nice guy all the time,” Porzingis said.

Gill is aware that this could get annoying. He doesn’t care. He has won over the locker room anyway.

“He’s a perfect blend,” Beal said. “He helps me all the time if I’m frustrated or the team isn’t getting energy or something. He’s like, ‘Yo, B, it’s time.’ That helps me. I may not even be frustrated; I may just have a blank face. And he’ll be like: ‘B, you all right? I want to make sure you’re good because if you’re good, we’re good.’ I’ll be like: ‘You know what, AG? You right. I’m good.’ He’s probably one of the best teammates I’ve ever had.”

Gill doesn’t subscribe to the assumed NBA hierarchy that places players above everyone else, and he tries to resist falling prey to the spoils of the job.

He gets teased every time he asks the equipment manager for a new pair of shoes because he averages somewhere between four and six pairs per season — insanely low for a professional basketball player. He frequently asks Daniel Villarreal for his opinion on Gill’s game after they work out even though Villarreal is one of the team’s video coordinators, generally considered a low-level position on a coaching staff.

“In my mind, I’m the lowest person on the totem pole. But for him, status is not a thing. He wants to hear what I think,” Villarreal said. “He’s helped me break down some of my own mental barriers because he’s willing to have those conversations — I’ll tell him, ‘If you think I’m helping you, you’re helping me just as much.’ ”

When the offseason comes, Gill plans to do what he did last year and alternate spending two weeks in Washington with two weeks at home in his native Charlotte, surrounded by his extended family, his wife and their three young children. He spends half of the time in Washington in case there’s another player in town so they’ll have someone to work out with and, if need be, another Wizards player as a touchstone.

“I get more out of coming here every day and being the last guy on the roster with no chance to move up — it seems like just working against this brick wall every day — than collecting checks and not playing at the highest level,” Gill said. “So, yes, I like to show up in the summer.”

Gill’s family and his faith ground him more than anything. They are the driving forces behind his unrelenting good-guy personality. Between his family and his role with the Wizards, Gill feels he’s fulfilling his purpose.

McKay, the former Virginia assistant who officiated Gill and Jenna’s wedding nearly seven years ago, knows as much from their conversations.

“God broke the mold,” McKay said. “The motive being so authentic I think is a rarity. I think it’s uncommon. And to some, Anthony is invisible because they judge the outcome or they judge his contribution by his stat line. But when you genuinely invest in someone else’s life — that’s real for him. That’s why I say he’s got to be as good of a teammate or the best teammate in the NBA. Because that’s a profession that can seduce you into thinking you’re more important than others. And AG, he just won’t bite that apple.”
